Description

STRIP PROFILE CONTROLTECHNICAL FIELD AND BACKGROUND

[0001] The invention relates to making thin steel strip in a twin roll strip caster.

[0002] The invention relates particularly, although by no means exclusively, to strip shape control, including a method for improving thick edges, sometimes referred to as “cat ears” and “batman ears” of thin steel strip.

[0003] In a twin roll strip caster, molten metal, typically steel, is delivered from a delivery system to a casting pool supported on casting surfaces of a pair of counter-rotated horizontal casting rolls, which are internally water cooled so that solidified metal shells form on the moving casting roll surfaces. The metal shells are brought together at a nip between them to produce a solidified strip product delivered downwardly from the nip between the casting rolls. The term “nip” is used herein to refer to the general region at which the casting rolls are closest together.

[0004] The molten metal may be poured from a ladle into a smaller vessel or series of smaller vessels from which it flows through a metal delivery nozzle or nozzles located above the nip to form the casting pool of molten metal supported on the casting surfaces of the casting rolls above the nip and extending the length of the nip.

[0005] The casting pool is usually confined between side plates or side dams held in sliding engagement with end portions of the casting rolls to restrict the casting pool against outflow. The upper surface of the casting pool (generally referred to as the “meniscus” level) is usually above the lower end of the delivery nozzle so that the lower end of the delivery nozzle is immersed within the casting pool.

[0006] When casting steel strip by a twin roll caster, the thin strip exits the nip, passes across a guide table, through a pinch roll stand and then through a hot rolling mill, where the thin strip is reduced to a desired thickness. The hot rolled strip is then cooled to form strip with a required microstructure for end use applications. The cooled strip is then coiled, with a shear cutting the strip periodically upstream of the coiler to form required lengths of strip in each coil.

[0007] Depending on the steel compositions and the casting conditions, twin roll cast, hot rolled and cooled strip can be used in a range of end use applications.

[0008] The shape of thin strip formed from molten steel passing through a nip between casting rolls influences the surface quality of coils of hot rolled and cooled strip. Thickness and shape variations of as-cast strip directly affect subsequent hot rolling the strip. For example, thick edges, sometimes referred to as “cat ears” and “batman ears” of thin steel strip may form in the as-cast strip.

[0009] Thick edges may affect the quality of the final strip product. For example, thick edges may result in rib defects on the surface of coiled strip, thereby directly affecting the quality and the qualification rate of the product.

[0010] Current proposals for shape control of thin steel strip are focused on the hot rolling process. For example, see Chinese patent application 201810565018.4 (CN108941204A) in the name of Beijing Science and Technology University, Chinese patent application 201510995998.8 (CN106914494A) in the name of Baoshan Iron and Steel, and Chinese patent application 200910103109.7 (CN101780478A) in the name of CISDI Engineering Co Ltd.

[0011] There is still a need for a method to minimise thick edges of thin steel strip produced by twin roll strip casting steel strip.

[0012] The above comments are not an admission of the common general knowledge in China or elsewhere.SUMMARY

[0013] In broad terms, the invention provides a twin roll strip casting method and an apparatus for controlling casting roll heat flux by controlling (a) Si: Mn in a molten steel composition supplied to a twin roll caster and (b) roll brushing to reduce Si / Mn oxides on surfaces of casting rolls and (c) optionally casting roll surface temperature, to minimise thick edges of edge portions of as-cast thin steel strip.

[0014] Typically, the edge portions are less than 500 mm, more typically less than 450 mm from an edge of the strip.

[0015] In broad terms, the invention provides a method for minimising thick edges of edge portions of as-cast thin steel strip produced in a twin roll strip caster comprising controlling a ratio of manganese (Mn) to silicon (Si) of a molten steel supplied to the caster and adjusting torque and / or rotating speed of roll brushes contacting the casting rolls, and optionally the temperature of casting rolls of the caster, in response to the thickness of edge portions of already-cast strip.

[0016] In broad terms, the invention provides an opportunity to minimise thick edges of edge portions of as-cast thin steel strip by: ○ controlling the Mn / Si ratio of a molten steel composition, ■ which affects caster roll oxides, which in turn affects heat transfer via  casting rolls, noting that casting roll cooling temperature also a factor for heat flux, ○ adjusting roll brush torque and / or speed by ■ measuring edge sections of cast strip at specific distance from edges, via  entry X-ray gauge feedback or other thickness measurement instruments, and ■ determining required adjustments of the brush speed and / or torque in  response to the thickness of edge portions of already-cast strip.

[0017] In accordance with the invention, the manganese and silicon contents and by extension the ratio of manganese to silicon in molten steel are controlled so that the composition of an oxide film on the surfaces of casting rolls and heat transfer between the surfaces of the casting rolls and the surfaces of the continuous casting thin steel strip are controlled, and the surface morphology of the casting rolls is controlled to contribute to minimising thick edges of the as-cast thin steel strip.

[0018] In addition, in accordance with the invention, (a) the shape, including the thickness of edge portions of the thin steel strip is measured, typically in real time, typically using a thickness measuring instrument and (b) adjustments to rotating speed and / or torque of roll brushes contacting casting rolls are made in response to the measurements for example via a control equation, resulting in control, typically real-time control, of the oxide film thickness on surfaces of the casting rolls and control, typically real time control, of the surface morphology of the casting rolls, and contributing to minimising thick edges of the as-cast thin steel strip.

[0019] Typically, the thickness measuring instrument makes strip thickness measurements across the width of as-cast strip before strip reaches a 1st set of pinch rolls upstream of a hot rolling mill in a direction of movement of strip. Typically, the thickness measuring instrument is an entry X-Ray profile gauge but could be any suitable instrument.

[0062] Referring to Figures 1-3, a twin roll caster of a twin roll casting apparatus is illustrated that comprises a main machine frame 10 that stands up from the factory floor and supports a pair of counter-rotatable casting rolls 12 mounted in a module in a roll cassette 11. The casting rolls 12 are mounted in the roll cassette 11 for ease of operation and movement as described below. The roll cassette 11 facilitates rapid movement of the casting rolls 12 ready for casting from a setup position into an operative casting position as a unit in the caster, and ready removal of the casting rolls 12 from the casting position when the casting rolls 12 are to be replaced. There is no particular configuration of the roll cassette 11 that is desired, so long as it performs that function of facilitating movement and positioning of the casting rolls 12 as described herein.

[0063] The twin roll caster includes the pair of counter-rotatable casting rolls 12 having casting surfaces 12A laterally positioned to form a nip 18 there between. Molten metal, more particularly molten steel described further below, is supplied from a ladle 13 through a metal delivery system to a metal delivery nozzle 17 (core nozzle) positioned between the casting rolls 12 above the nip 18. Molten steel thus delivered forms a casting pool 19 of molten steel above the nip 18 supported on the casting surfaces 12A of the casting rolls 12. This casting pool 19 is confined in the casting area at the ends of the casting rolls 12 by a pair of side closure plates, or side dams 20. The upper surface of the casting pool 19 (generally referred to as the "meniscus" level) may rise above the lower end of the delivery nozzle 17 so that the lower end of the delivery nozzle 17 is immersed within the casting pool 19. The casting area includes the addition of a protective atmosphere above the casting pool 19 to inhibit oxidation of the molten steel in the casting area.

[0064] The twin roll caster also includes a pair of roll brushes denoted generally as 22 is disposed adjacent the pair of casting rolls 12 such that the periphery of the brushes 22 may be brought into contact with the casting surfaces 12A of the casting rolls 12 at opposite sides from nip 17 to clean oxides from the casting surfaces, prior to the casting surfaces 12A entering the controlled atmosphere above the casting pool, and thereafter coming into contact with the molten metal casting pool 10. The brush apparatus for each roll brush 22 comprises a brush frame 20 that carries cleaning brushes 22 for cleaning the casting surfaces 12A of the casting rolls 12 during the casting campaign, and optionally, a separate sweeper brush 23 cleaning the casting surfaces 12A of the casting rolls 12 at the beginning and end of the casting campaign.

[0065] The energy exerted by the main cleaning brush 22 against the casting surfaces 12A of the casting rolls 12 is controlled so that the cleaning of the casting roll surfaces is controlled to a specified level during the casting campaign.

[0066] The energy exerted by the brushes 22 on the casting surfaces 12A is controlled by controlling the pressure of the brush on the casting rolls or the rotational speed of the cleaning brushes 22, or both, based on parameters including thickness of edge portions of as-cast strip and heat flux from molten metal in the casting pool 10 to the casting surfaces 12A of the casting rolls 12.

[0067] This control may be done manually or automatically as described herein.

[0068] The brushes 22 may also be mounted and controlled to enable the angle of contact of the brushes with the casting surfaces 12A to be changed, so that different energy can be exerted by the brushes on different segments along the casting roll surfaces.

[0069] The twin roll casting apparatus also includes a thickness measuring instrument that makes strip thickness measurements across the width of as-cast (i.e. already cast) strip downstream od the nip between the casting rolls and before the strip reaches a 1st set of pinch rolls of a downstream hot rolling mill. Typically, the thickness measuring instrument is an entry X-Ray profile gauge but could be any suitable instrument.

[0070] As is described below, the thickness measurements are inputted into a control system (not shown) of the twin roll casting apparatus that calculates adjustments to the pressure of the brushes 22 on the casting rolls and / or the rotational speed of the cleaning brushes 22 to minimise thick edges of edge portions of subsequently-formed strip.

[0071] Typically, the edge portions are less than 500 mm, more typically less than 450 mm from an edge of the strip.

[0072] The ladle 13 typically is of a conventional construction supported on a rotating turret 42. For steel delivery, the ladle 13 is positioned over a movable tundish 14 in the casting position to fill the tundish 14 with molten steel. The movable tundish 14 may be positioned on a tundish car 66 capable of transferring the tundish 14 from a heating station (not shown) , where the tundish 14 is heated to near a casting temperature, to the casting position.

[0073] The movable tundish 14 may be fitted with a slide gate 25, actuable by a servo mechanism, to allow molten steel to flow from the tundish 14 through the slide gate 25, and then through a refractory outlet shroud 15 to a transition piece or distributor 16 in the casting position. From the distributor 16, the molten steel flows to the delivery nozzle 17 positioned between the casting rolls 12 above the nip 18.

[0074] The side dams 20 may be made from a refractory material such as zirconia graphite, graphite alumina, boron nitride, boron nitride-zirconia, or other suitable composites. The side dams 20 have a face surface capable of physical contact with the casting rolls 12 and molten steel in the casting pool 19. The side dams 20 are mounted in side dam holders (not shown) , which are movable by side dam actuators (not shown) , such as a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder, servo mechanism, or other actuator to bring the side dams 20 into engagement with the ends of the casting rolls 12. Additionally, the side dam actuators are capable of positioning the side dams 20 during casting. The side dams 20 form end closures for the molten pool of molten steel on the casting rolls 12 during the casting operation.

[0075] Figure 1 shows the twin roll caster producing the cast thin strip 21, with the cast strip moving initially downwardly and then looping upwardly to a guide table 30 through a hot box that contains a controlled, protective atmosphere, for example containing nitrogen, to minimize strop oxidation, and move across a guide table 30 to a pinch roll stand 31, comprising pinch rolls 31A. The guide table 30, the hot box, and the pinch roll stand 31 form part of the apparatus.

[0076] The casting rolls 12 are internally water cooled as described below so that as the casting rolls 12 are counter-rotated, shells solidify on the casting surfaces 12A, as the casting surfaces 12A move into contact with and through the casting pool 19 with each revolution of the casting rolls 12. The shells are brought close together at the nip 18 between the casting rolls 12 to produce a cast thin strip product 21 delivered downwardly from the nip 18. The cast thin strip 21 is formed from the shells at the nip 18 between the casting rolls 12 and delivered downwardly and moved downstream.

[0077] Upon exiting the pinch roll stand 31, the cast thin strip 21 passes through a strip edge cooling station 40 of the twin roll strip casting apparatus that cools the side edges of the strip by at least 40℃ and less than 220℃ using water, by way of example, as a coolant.

[0078] After passing through the strip edge cooling station 40, the cast thin strip 21 passes through a hot rolling mill 32 of the twin roll strip casting apparatus. The hot rolling mill 32 comprises a pair of work rolls 32A, and backup rolls 32B, forming a gap capable of hot rolling the cast thin strip 21 delivered from the casting rolls 12, where the cast thin strip 21 is hot rolled to reduce the strip to a desired thickness, improve the strip surface, and improve the strip flatness. The work rolls 32A have work surfaces relating to the desired strip profile across the work rolls 32A. Typically, the steel strip enters the hot rolling mill 32 at an average mill entry temperature of 1020-1150℃ and leaves the hot rolling mill at an average mill exit temperature of 140-160℃ lower than the average mill entry temperature.

[0079] It is noted that the invention is not confined to the use of water as a coolant to be delivered via the spray nozzles 48. The invention extends to the use of any suitable coolant.

[0080] In use, water is delivered by the selected spray nozzles 48 directed to the side edges of the cast thin strip 21 as the strip moves from the pinch roll stand 31 to the hot rolling mill 32. The spray nozzles atomize water to generate a spray that contacts and cools the strip edges.

[0081] In operation, the strip leaves the nip at temperatures of the order of 1400℃ and greater.

[0082] The steel strip is cast downwardly into an enclosure 27 that extends between the twin roll caster and the hot rolling mill 32. The enclosure 27 contains selectively controlled atmospheres to form target oxide scale on the strip as the strip moves through the enclosure 27.

[0083] After the hot rolling mill 32, the hot rolled thin strip passes into a cooling station 97, where the strip is cooled by water that is delivered by spray nozzles 90 of a plurality of rows of water spray assemblies extending across a run-out table 33 of the apparatus as the strip moves over the run-out table 33 in the cooling station 97. While spray nozzles atomize coolant to generate a spray, any other coolant discharge port may be employed in any embodiment in lieu of spray nozzles. In addition to generating a spray, other types of coolant discharge ports may discharge a non-atomized flow of coolant. The cooling station 97 cools the hot rolled thin strip to any suitable temperature having regard to the steel composition and the microstructure required for end-use applications for the steel strip.

[0084] The cooled hot rolled cast thin strip 21 then passes through a second pinch roll stand 91 having a pair of rolls 91A that provide tension to the cast thin strip 21 during the shear cut.

[0085] In the exemplary embodiment shown in Figure 3, cooling station 97 extends along the path 99 of the strip between the hot rolling mill 32 and the second pinch roll stand 91 with multiple spray nozzles 90 in the multiple rows of water spray assemblies arranged there between. Although it is not discernable in the view depicted in Figure 3, the rows of spray nozzles 90 extend substantially across the strip width or the cooling station width in a widthwise arrangement and are spaced apart along the length of the cooling station 97.

[0086] Finally, the cooled hot rolled cast thin strip 21 is coiled in a coiler 92 of the apparatus. A shear at a shear station 98 cuts the strip periodically upstream of the coiler to form required length of strip for each coil.

[0087] Further details of the twin roll caster described in relation to Figures 1-3 can be found in the specification of Chinese Patent Application No. 201780029304.2 in the name of the applicant and the disclosure in that specification is incorporated herein by cross-reference.

[0088] The above-described embodiment of a twin roll caster and method are suitable for producing steel strip less than 3 mm, typically less than 2.5 mm, in thickness from a molten steel melt comprising by weight, C<0.6%, Si<0.3%, Mn<2.5%, Nb<0.1%, P<0.03%, S<0.0025%, soluble Al<0.01%, N<0.005%, Cu<0.4%and the remainder iron, impurities and inclusions. The term “impurities” means elements in the melt as an inevitable result of steelmaking practices or as a consequence of the feed materials for steelmaking. These tend to be non-metallic elements. Examples of impurities are N, P, S, and H. The term “inclusions” means compounds that form during steelmaking. Examples of “inclusions” include AlN and MnS.

[0089] It is noted that the invention is not confined to this steel composition.

[0090] The invention minimises thick edges of edge portions of as-cast thin steel strip produced in a twin roll strip caster by controlling a ratio of manganese (Mn) to silicon (Si) of a molten steel supplied to the caster and adjusting torque and rotating speed of roll brushes contacting the casting rolls, and optionally the temperature of casting rolls of the caster, in response to the thickness of edge portions of cast strip.

[0091] In accordance with the invention, the manganese and silicon contents and by extension the ratio of manganese to silicon in molten steel are controlled so that the composition of an oxide film on the surface of a casting roll and heat transfer between the surface of the casting roll and the surface of the continuous casting thin steel strip are controlled, and the surface morphology of the casting roll is controlled to contribute to minimising thick edges of the as-cast thin steel strip.

[0092] In accordance with the invention, the manganese and silicon contents and by extension the ratio of manganese to silicon in molten steel are controlled so that the composition of an oxide film on the surfaces of the casting roll 12 and heat transfer between the surfaces of the casting rolls and the surface of the continuous casting thin steel strip are controlled, and the surface morphology of the casting rolls 12 is controlled to contribute to minimising thick edges of the as-cast thin steel strip.

[0093] In addition, in accordance with the invention, (a) the shape, including the thickness of edge portions of the already cast strip is measured in real time using the above-described thickness measuring instrument and (b) adjustments to rotating speed and / or torque of the roll brushes 22 contacting casting rolls are made in response to the measurements for example via running a control equation described below, resulting in real-time control of the oxide film thickness on surfaces of the casting rolls 12 and real time control of the surface morphology of the casting rolls 12, and contributing to minimising thick edges of the subsequently-formed as-cast strip.

[0094] In the described embodiment of the invention, the control system including the control equation is as follows.

[0095] The control system determines a maximum strip thickness Hc between positions A and B of an edge portion of the thin steel strip using the on-line thickness measuring instrument and records a position C of the maximum thickness Hc between positions A and B, wherein the position A is 5 -100 mm from an edge of the thin steel strip, and the position B is 150 -450 mm from the edge.

[0096] The control system calculates a yc value at position C by fitting a quadratic flatness curve y=ax2+bx+c to a thickness profile across a full width of the thin steel strip measured by the on-line thickness measuring instrument and calculating the yc value at position C.

[0097] The control system determines whether the edge portion of the thin steel strip has a thick edge by calculating a difference between the maximum thickness Hc measured in step 2) and the yc value at position C calculated in step 3) , determining a thick edge value Sc as: Sc =Hc -yc, .

[0098] The control system adjusts a torque and a rotational speed of the roll brushes as follows: when the thick edge value Sc is greater than a threshold value P, adopting following  steps for adjustment: adjusting a torque of each roll brush N0 to N, wherein: N = N0 * (1 + α *Sc) ; adjusting the rotational speed of each roll brush S0 to S, wherein: S = S0 * (1+β * Sc) ; wherein a value of P ranges from 0 to 100 μm, wherein: N is the torque of each roll brush after adjustment, N0 is the torque of each roll  brush before adjustment, α is a roll brush torque adjustment parameter, and the value of α is 0.002 ~ 0.01; S is the rotational speed of each roll brush after adjustment, S0 is the rotational  speed of each roll brush before adjustment, β is a roll brush rotational speed adjustment parameter, and the value of β is 0.003 ~ 0.02.

[0099] The applicant has found that the above-described method is an effective method for minimising thick edges of thin steel strip.

[0100] The following Examples 1-3 were carried out on the apparatus described in relation to Figures 1-3.

[0101] Figure 4 is a schematic view of thick edges of a prior art thin strip and Figure 5 is a schematic view of a thin strip according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0102] With reference to Figures 4 and 5: - the “y” coordinate is strip thickness and the “x” coordinate is strip width, - prior art Figure 4 shows an example of an as-cast strip that has undesirable increased  thickness sections at edge sections of the strip, with the edge portions being 450 mm from strip edges. - Figure 5 is an example of a suitable thickness profile across the full strip width, with no  thick edges in edge portions with the edge portions being 450 mm from strip edges, and with a good convex profile (typically 30~50 micron –thicker in centre) that is suitable for hot rolling.

[0103] Example 1

[0104] Molten steel was produced via steelmaking in an electric furnace or a converter, with the ratio of Mn element content to Si element content in the molten steel selected to be 3.2. Molten steel was passed through a pair of casting rolls rotating oppositely to produce a cast strip with a thickness of 1.97mm and a width of 1320mm. The temperature of the casting rolls was controlled to be 325℃.

[0105] The profile of the as-cast strip was measured by a thickness gauge and the maximum thickness was 1.990mm in the range of 10mm to 200mm from the edge, while the position of the highest point was 65mm from the edge.

[0106] The profile of the as-cast thin steel strip was fitted to a quadratic equation, as follows:

[0107] y=2.035× 2 +2.6x+1.9, and the thickness of the fitted curve at 65mm was calculated to be 1.920mm, resulting in a thick edge value of 73.96 μm, wherein, the value of the thick edge control parameter P was 50.

[0108] The roll torque was 312 lbf. in, the roll brush rotating speed is 223rpm, the torque adjusting parameter was 0.0037, the rotating speed adjusting parameter was 0.0112, the roll brush torque was 326 lbf. in through N=N 0* (1+α*Sc) and the roll brush rotating speed was 253rpm through S=S 0* (1+β*Sc) detected by the roll brush monitoring sensor.

[0109] The produced thin steel strip had no thick edges in edge portions, and subsequent hot rolling was stable. After coiling, the steel coil surface had no defects.

[0110] The as-cast strip profile is shown in Figure 5.

[0111] Example 2

[0112] Molten steel was produced via an electric furnace or a converter, with the ratio of Mn element content to Si element content in the molten steel selected to be 3.5, the molten steel was passed through a pair of casting rolls rotating oppositely to form a cast strip with a thickness of 1.94mm and width of 1680mm. The temperature of the casting rolls was controlled to be 370 ℃.
