Description

INDEPENDENT AND MOBILE EMERGENCY-RESPONSE SUBSTATION DESIGN

[0001] The present invention generally relates to the category of low-voltage stations, or mobile stations used to convert voltages from medium to low voltages and in particular to self-contained, non-vehicle-mounted substation engineered to restore or provide temporary electrical service during emergencies, planned outages, or network maintenance.

[0002] Mobile substations have been developed to address situations where permanent substations are unavailable, damaged, or require augmentation. For example, Chinese Patent Publication No. CN101355238 discloses a type of mobile substation structure with matching equipment and integrated functions. While this design represents an improvement over traditional fixed substations, several technical challenges remain.

[0003] Chinese Patent No. CN101355238 discloses an undetachable mobile station installed on a vehicle and it also has no separate movable gates, and it does not have a designated space for cable rollers, and it has a reserve tank for oil, which may cause oil leakage, in addition to forming a dispensable additional space, and also its dimensions are large due to its connection to a vehicle wherein it requires specific parking. Therefore, there is a need to provide a station independent from the vehicle, independently moveable, has standard dimensions, contains a specific space to flexible rollers, does not need a reserve oil tank, and relies on environmentally friendly dry converters, and has a specific air-cooling system that can be used in natural stations. First, the structural arrangement described in CN101355238 is relatively bulky and complex, limiting its ease of deployment and maneuverability in constrained environments such as urban areas or rugged terrain. Second, the integration of multiple functional modules in the disclosed system often results in suboptimal space utilization, leading to difficulties in transport, installation, and maintenance. Third, cooling, vibration resistance, and reliability under variable operating conditions remain inadequately addressed, which can reduce equipment lifespan and operational safety. Finally, the disclosed system lacks sufficient modularity and standardization, which hampers rapid reconfiguration or upgrading when adapting to different grid requirements. Accordingly, there is a need for an improved mobile substation that overcomes these limitations by providing a more compact configuration, enhanced multifunctionality, and simplified operation and maintenance. Such an invention should enable quick deployment, reliable performance, and adaptability to a wide range of power network scenarios.

[0004] U.S. patent No. US4562360 also only relates to aerial connection of the voltages in the primary and secondary coil and the connection with the lines is exposed, and this affects the safety of the equipment, in addition to the possibility of shock as a result of electromagnetic induction due to the lack of sufficient insulation, thus, there is a need to provide a fully insulated mobile station in an independent container and designated to the terrestrial networks connected to the substations, as in the present invention. US4562360 discloses a portable substation system designed for temporary use. However, this prior art also suffers from notable limitations. The arrangement of high-voltage equipment on trailers in the disclosed system requires extensive setup and interconnection at the deployment site, resulting in time-consuming installation and reduced mobility. The design emphasizes portability but does not sufficiently address compact integration, meaning that multiple transport vehicles are often required to carry different substation components. This increases logistical complexity and cost, while also limiting rapid response capability. Moreover, the disclosed system lacks advanced multifunctional integration, such as compact control and protection modules, leading to additional auxiliary equipment needs at the site.

[0005] Accordingly, there remains a strong need for an improved mobile substation that overcomes the deficiencies of both CN101355238 and US4562360 by providing a more compact configuration, enhanced multifunctionality, simplified operation and maintenance, and reduced logistical burden. Such an invention should enable quick deployment, reliable performance, and adaptability to a wide range of power network scenarios.

[0006] The present invention concerns a fully self-contained, non-vehicle-mounted substation engineered to restore or provide temporary electrical service during emergencies, planned outages, or network maintenance. [0031] shows a rear view of the proposed substation showing details of connection points (17) for outlets and inlets for medium-voltage cables, with an illustration of the cable roller platform (10), a fan at the front of the container and ventilation vents at the back of the container.

[0032] The following detailed description illustrates the principles and exemplary embodiments of the invention and is intended to provide a thorough understanding of its features and advantages. While specific examples and configurations are described, those of ordinary skill in the art will recognize that various modifications, variations, and substitutions can be made without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims. The invention is not limited to the particular embodiments disclosed herein but encompasses all embodiments and implementations within the scope of the claims.

[0033] As shown inFigures 1 and 2, the proposed invention discloses an independent substation not installed on a vehicle with a maximum capacity of 1 MVA inside a fully insulated container and used as an alternative to installed substations in emergency situations such as fires and when the electrical service coming from the electrical network is interrupted to a group of subscribers, plants or entities, and also serves to feed the subscribers in scheduled outage situations, which increases the indicators of service reliability.

[0034] Structurally, the proposed substation is built around a prismatic container whose external dimensions, approximately 6.5 m in length, 2.5 m in width, and 3.85 m in height – which is capable of conforming to standard flat-bed trailer clearances and allows positioning within a single parking space. In accordance with the present invention, the proposed container is fabricated from iron, aluminium or steel sheets that are factory-galvanised with zinc or zinc alloys to resist corrosion in aggressive coastal, industrial, or desert environments. A removable front bulkhead facilitates installation or exchange of heavy apparatus without dismantling the supporting frame, while an internal lining of dielectric insulating panels provides touch-safe surfaces and attenuates electromagnetic fields throughout the enclosure.

[0035] The proposed station comprises accessories and details which assist with an optimal speed of exiting the cable platform (10) from its designated space at multiple angles, standard dimensions that enable the user to move the mobile station easily in the surroundings and narrow streets, a ventilation system comprises air inlets at specific angles and its exit from a single main outlet, a feeding battery to operate the station accessories and electric rolling gates upward movable for easy access to the internal station components and easy maintenance.

[0036] There was a need for an independent substation not installed on a vehicle used to feed zones where the electrical service has been cut off, and it comprises a container 1 whose external structure is made of various metals consisting in its external structure to the right, left, back, several movable doors upwards and downwards to facilitate workover operations.

[0037] In an embodiment of the present invention - internally, the volume is partitioned into three functional zones that segregate medium-voltage equipment from low-voltage auxiliaries and from cable-handling machinery, enhancing safety and simplifying airflow management:

[0038] The first zone, or Zone A accommodates a 1 MVA dry-type cast-resin transformer (2) whose oil-free construction eliminates leakage hazards and environmental permitting issues. Down-stream of the transformer (2), a low-voltage switchboard (15) delivers either 400 / 231 V or 231 / 127 V three-phase outputs through protrusible, touch-proof terminals (4). Voltage selection is executed locally via a double-throw switch (15) on the main control panel (14) or remotely via an encrypted wireless handset (16).

[0039] The second zone, or Zone B is divided vertically. The upper tier houses a medium-voltage loop connection unit (3) fitted with load-break switches that enable the module to be inserted into or isolated from a live ring network without interrupting adjacent feeders. The lower tier contains shielded separable connectors rated for 11–33 kV cables, providing plug-and-play terminations for incoming feeds and outgoing tees to the load. The arrangement respects phase-segregation clearances and grants technicians unobstructed reach to torque bolts or engage operating levers.

[0040] The third zone, or Zone C forms a dedicated bay for a retractable cable-reel platform (10). The platform (10) rides on multi-axis hinges (11) that afford at least 90° horizontal slew and 30° vertical tilt, permitting the operator to pay out or retrieve conductors without kinking them against kerbs, street furniture, or trench walls. In its stowed state, the platform (10) lies wholly within the container footprint; in its deployed state, it extends outward to create a stable worktable for drum handling.

[0041] In an embodiment, when the doors need to be opened, the specialist selects one of the methods that enable him to open, the first method is manual opening of the doors by using a switch similar to the wheel-like switch used in elevators and the second method is the electric opening of the doors through a controller (16) comprises two keys to close and open the electrical circuit of the doors.

[0042] The proposed container is carried by a wheeled chassis that incorporates at least two pneumatic-tyred transport wheels and a complementary set of vertically extendable support legs (7). Each leg terminates in a self-levelling foot that compensates for uneven terrain; once deployed, the legs (7) raise the wheels clear of the ground, convert the mobile module into a vibration-free stationary plant, and fix the working height of the connection interfaces. The transport–service transition requires no external lifting machinery and can be performed by a single operator using integral hand-pump or electric actuators.

[0043] Eight vertically translating rolling doors (5) are distributed along the lateral and rear faces of the container to optimise access for inspection, maintenance, and component replacement. Every door travels upward into an overhead cassette and may be driven by electric linear or rotary actuators; a manual override ensures continued operability if auxiliary power is lost. A concealed ladder (18) stowed inside a recessed housing (19) in one side wall can be pulled out, climbed for elevated access, and retracted flush with the outer skin after use, thereby preserving the unit’s transport envelope.

[0044] In another embodiment - the inside of the container comprises three zones, the first zone A comprises a distribution transformer (2) with a distribution panel (14) with a maximum capacity of 1 MVA with two different voltages 400 / 231 V and 231 / 127 V at the secondary end of the converter and its type is a dry converter with an exit electrical connection point with a protrusion (17). The second zone B comprises a loop connecting unit 3 at the top and comprises a link point for the outlets and inlets for medium-voltage cables 4 at the bottom. Zone C comprises a platform (10) of cable rollers that can be directed outward by a movable hinge (11) with multiple angles to configure the feature of orienting cables and prevent them from bending in confined spaces and provide additional spaces and distances when needed, and provided are a set of 12 electric motors (12) to achieve the advantage of accelerating the rolling and unrolling of cables on the platform (10), and there are also oil pumping motors 13 that are used to pull triple cables that are difficult to pull through electric motors (12). There is a fan 8 on the front of the container that passes the hot air from inside to outside of the container, wherein the air inlet sequence begins through the ventilation holes 9 at the back of the container. Provided at the front of the container the box 9 to protect a battery that is used to power internal accessories when needed. The station can be easily moved in the streets because it has an unprecedented standard small dimension of 6.5 m in length, 2.5 m in width, and 3.85 m in height, and it can be stopped in normal stations without a vehicle and is stable on legs (7). Provided is a control panel (14) that contains manual switches to manually convert and switch the voltage and by means of a remote control (16) to achieve the safety factor of discharging the potential power charges in the primary side coils of the converter during the conversion of voltages, and the conversion is done either manually through a dual switch (15) or in an electrical manner through a remote control (16), and the control panel (14) contains a timer that prevents the connection before discharging the potential energy charges.

[0045] In accordance with another embodiment of the present invention, the cable-handling mechanism employs a hybrid drive philosophy. Lightweight, single-core or auxiliary cables are wound by a bank of reversible electric motors (12) coupled directly to the reel shafts, whereas heavy triple-core power cables—whose pulling tension exceeds the continuous rating of the electric drives—are manipulated by a variable-displacement hydraulic motor linked through a planetary gearbox. The hydraulic circuit can deliver substantially higher tractive effort yet shares the same operator interface, guaranteeing intuitive control regardless of cable type.

[0046] Heat generated by the transformer (2) and switchgear is evacuated by a forced-convection ventilation system. Ambient air enters through a lattice of rear- and side-wall intake apertures (9) that are geometrically tuned to direct the inflow first across the transformer (2) fins, then upward past the loop unit, before being exhausted by a high-capacity extractor fan (8) mounted in the front wall. A thermostatic controller modulates fan speed to maintain safe operating temperatures; baffles inside the airflow corridor minimise recirculation and prevent moisture ingress during adverse weather.

[0047] An integrated front recess—or “power accessory box”—is sized to accept either a small diesel generator or a rechargeable battery pack. This auxiliary source energises door drives, lighting, control electronics, and ventilation fans when an external supply is absent, allowing the substation to be commissioned or de-energised under blackout conditions. Change-over contactors automatically transfer the internal auxiliary bus between grid, generator, and battery inputs without disturbing primary load connections.

[0048] System governance is entrusted to a dual-mode control architecture. A rugged, panel-mounted interface (14) provides hard-wired switches, status lamps, and analogue meters for on-site operation. In parallel, a handheld wireless pendant (16) communicates over an encrypted radio channel, enabling personnel to open doors, select voltage ranges, and actuate the cable-reel drives from a safe perimeter. Re-energisation is blocked by a programmable time-delay interlock that confirms residual voltages in transformer (2) windings have decayed to harmless levels.

[0049] Continuous environment and equipment surveillance is handled by an embedded monitoring module. Temperature, humidity, line voltage, phase current, and insulation resistance are sampled in each zone, logged locally, and relayed to a supervisory control centre via cellular or other wireless data links. Alarm thresholds may be customised to trigger SMS or SCADA events, thereby enhancing reliability indicators and facilitating predictive maintenance.

[0050] Taken together, these features yield a substation that combines the resilience of a permanent installation with the logistical freedom of a trailer. The corrosion-protected enclosure, self-levelling support legs (7), multi-axis cable platform (10), oil-free transformer (2), and redundant control paths all contribute to a design that deploys rapidly, operates safely in confined city environments, and withdraws just as quickly once the primary grid is restored. By eliminating the need for a dedicated vehicle chassis, the module may be parked indefinitely in substation bays, industrial courtyards, or roadside verges without consuming scarce fleet resources. The result is a versatile, environmentally sound, and operator-friendly solution for emergency power restoration and planned network support.

[0051] Independent, Non-Vehicle-Mounted Design - The substation is not permanently installed on a vehicle, unlike many prior mobile substations. It is a standalone, towable unit that can be parked and left in place for extended periods, functioning as a stationary plant.

[0052] Compact Standard Dimensions for Urban Mobility - The substation features unprecedented compact dimensions (6.5 m × 2.5 m × 3.85 m), allowing easy movement through narrow streets and rapid deployment in urban environments where space is limited.

[0053] Fully Insulated Containerized Structure - The entire substation is housed within a fully insulated container, enhancing safety by preventing electrical shocks and electromagnetic induction, and making it suitable for terrestrial network connections.

[0054] Internal Partitioning for Quiet Operation and Fast Cooling - The interior is divided into multiple zones to ensure quiet operation and efficient cooling, supporting environmentally friendly dry-type converters.

[0055] Flexible Cable Management System - Includes a roller-mounted platform (10) for medium- and low-voltage flexible cables, which can be oriented outward at multiple angles via a movable hinge (11). This prevents cable bending in confined spaces and allows for easy cable deployment and retrieval.

[0056] Multiple Movable Doors and Concealed Ladder (18) - Equipped with up to eight movable doors (manual or electric operation) for easy maintenance access, and a hidden, pull-up ladder (18) for safe entry and exit.

[0057] Electric Rolling Gates and Automated Cable Handling - Features electric rolling gates for upward movement, and electric motors (12) to accelerate the rolling and unrolling of cables, improving operational efficiency.

[0058] Integrated Ventilation and Cooling System - A dedicated ventilation system with angled air inlets and a single main outlet, plus a front-mounted fan, ensures effective cooling and air circulation.

[0059] Environmentally Friendly Power Conversion - Utilizes dry-type converters, eliminating the need for oil tanks and reducing environmental risks such as oil leakage.

[0060] Enhanced Worker Safety and Reliability - The design prioritizes worker safety through full insulation, safe access features, and reliable cable management, while also improving service reliability during emergencies and scheduled outages.

[0061] Auxiliary Power and Remote-Control (16) Features - Includes a battery or generator case for auxiliary power, and a control panel (14) with manual and remote switching capabilities, including a timer to ensure safe voltage conversion.

[0062] These features collectively distinguish the invention from traditionally implemented systems / prior art, providing a rapid, safe, and flexible solution for emergency power supply in diverse environments.

[0063] While the invention has been described in connection with exemplary embodiments, those skilled in the art will recognize that numerous modifications, variations, and alternative configurations may be made without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention. The embodiments described herein are intended to be illustrative only and not limiting, and the invention encompasses all such modifications, variations, and equivalents as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
