ANTIPERSPIRANT COMPOSITION COMPRISING LOTUS FLOWER EXTRACTCLAIM OF PRIORITY
[0001] This patent application claims the benefit of priority to U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 63 / 676,753, filed July 29, 2024, which is incorporated by reference herein in its entirety.BACKGROUND
[0002] Personal hygiene is important to many consumers in the world today. Daily human activity can cause the release of sweat and sebum from skin, particularly with physical activity and exercise. Often, such perspiration is associated with odor. Perspiration is a physiological body function that helps control and preserve body temperature. Sweat is produced by sweat glands when the body temperature increases.
[0003] Antiperspirant products have been used since the early twentieth century, although fragrances have been used to cover associated odors since ancient Egypt and Rome. Today, consumers may use products that are antiperspirant cosmetic compositions to help reduce or stop production of sweat in large quantities, and / or the use of deodorant cosmetic compositions to reduce body odor. These products are often combined in various formulations for a single application. Preferably, these formulations are additional gentle on and beneficial to the consumer’s skin during wear.SUMMARY OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0010] Discussed herein is a formulation for an antiperspirant. The formulation has good antiperspirant and deodorant properties, and relies on Nelupure, which is a lotus flower extract. Preferably, the formulation reduces / removes use of aluminum powder. The key active ingredients include nymphaea coerulea flower extract and nelumbo nucifera flower extract, which contribute the skin conditioning; in addition to a magnesium hydroxide / magnesium carbonate odor absorbency agent; and a deodorant including 2-methyl 5-cyclohexylpentanol and triethyl citrate.
[0011] Four variants on this formulation are discussed: an anhydrous composition with a natural extract and antiperspirant action; an anhydrous composition with antiperspirant action that is aluminum-free; an anhydrous composition with aluminum salt including a natural chassis; and a lotus power antiperspirant roll-on formulation with tapioca.
[0012] The proposed formulations can be presented as an aerosol, a roll-on, or a solid. The use of the Nelupure in the formulation of the antiperspirant improves the skin conditioning of the formulation in conjunction with the deodorant and antiperspirant properties.

[0026] The compositions herein are antiperspirant formulations including Nelupure, a lotus extract. Nelupure is a blended extract from two types of lotus flowers. The use of Nelupure in the formulations discussed herein can help with the antiperspirant formulation providing benefits such as purity and luminosity, while reducing pore inflammation and reducing excess sebum production in the skin.
[0027] Generally, the formulations discussed herein contain a combination of the lotus blossom extracts, odor absorbency agents, deodorants, additional skin conditioning agents, and other various components to synergistically provide desired antiperspirant anddeodorant properties. The formulations can additionally or optionally include components such as solvents, emollients, propellants, humectants, viscosity agents, antioxidants, fragrances, and more.
[0028] Lotus Blossom Extract. The formulations herein include a lotus extract blend. An example lotus flower extract blend is Nelupure, a blended extract from two types of lotus flowers, Nelumbo nucifera (Scared Lotus) and Nymphea caerulea (Egyptian Lotus). In an example, Nelupure can be present in a range of about 0.0001 wt.% to about 10.00 wt.%, such as in an amount of about 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0 or about 10.0 wt.% of the overall formulation.
[0029] In an example, the lotus blossom extract blend can include Nelumbo nucifera extract and Nymphea caerulea extract. The Nelumbo nucifera extract can be present in a range of about 0.0001 wt.% to about 5.00 wt.%, such as in an amount of about 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, or about 5.0 wt.% of the overall formulation. The Nymphea caerulea extract can be present in a range of about 0.0001 wt.% to about 5.00 wt.%, such as in an amount of about 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, or about 5.0 wt.% of the overall formulation.
[0030] In addition to the lotus flower extract blend, other skin conditioning agents can be included in the formulation to help with skin sheen, softness, texture, glow, dryness, and other skin conditions. Other example skin conditioning agents can include, for example, Neopentyl Glycol Diheptanoate, or other agents.

One or more odor absorbing agents and / or deodorants can be included in the formulation to aid in reduction of odor once the antiperspirant formulation is applied. [0033] Emollients. Emollients can be included in the formulation to allow for aid in softening or smoothly the skin. Example emollients can include methyl soy ate, Cl 2- 15 Alkyl Benzoate, Isododecane, and combinations thereof. In the formulation discussed herein, a reduced number of emollients may be used compared to conventional antiperspirant formulations due to the use of the lotus flower extracts. The emollients can be present in theformulation in an amount of about 1.0 wt.% to about 35.0 wt.% of the formulation, such as about 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0, 20.0, 25.0, 30.0, or about 35.0 wt.% of the formulation.
[0034] Emulsifiers . One or more emulsifiers can be included in the formulation to stabilize the formulation, and to allow for effective mixing of the various components therein. Example emulsifiers can include one or more of Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate, Steareth-2, Steareth-20, or other appropriate emulsifiers. The emulsifiers can be present in an amount of about 0.1 wt.% to about 30.0 wt.% of the formulation, for example about 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0, 20.0, 25.0, or about 30.0 wt.% of the formulation.
[0035] Propellants . If the formulation is presented in an aerosol format, such as in a spray can, one or more propellants can be included in the formulation. Such propellants can give pressure in an aerosol spray can. Example propellants can include butane, isobutane, propane, or combinations thereof. The propellant can be present in the formulation in an amount of about 5.0 wt.% to about 70 wt.% of the formulation, such as about 5.0, 10.0, 15.0, 20.0, 25.0, 30.0, 35.0, 40.0, 45.0, 50.0, 55.0, 60.0, 65.0, or about 70.0 wt.% of the formulation.
[0036] Humectants. The formulation can include one or more humectants to help provide and retain skin moisture with the formulation. Example humectants can include glycerin. The humectants can be present in the formulation at an amount of about 0.0005 wt.% to about 5.0 wt.%, such as about 0.0005, 0.005, 0.05, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, or about 5.0 wt.% of the formulation.
[0037] Solvents. One or more solvents can be included in the formulation to dissolve and disperse other ingredients, improve texture, and enhance product performance. Solvents can include, for example, water, propanediol, caprylyl glycol, propylene glycol, dibutyl adipate, propylene carbonate, and others.
[0038] Viscosity Agents. As desired, viscosity-altering agents, such as thickeners, can be included in the formulation. For example, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Tapioca Starch, Xanthan Gum, and others, can be used as viscosity altering agents. The viscosity agents can be present in the formulation at an amount of about 0.1 wt. % to about 10.0 wt.% of the formulation, such as about 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0, or about 10.0 wt.%.

One or more antioxidants can be included in the formulation to help protect skin cells from damage and aging, improve skin texture and appearance.Example antioxidants can include Pentarythrityl Tetra-di-t-butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate. Inan example, the antioxidants can be in the formulation at an amount of about 0.005 wt.% to about 5.0 wt.%, such as 0.005, 0.05, 0.50, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, or about 5.0 wt.% of the formulation.

The formulation has a reduced number of emollients in order to have a minimalist formulation. The formulation is aluminum free, non-clogging for pores, a natural product, and has beneficial antiperspirant properties. This formulation works based on an antiperspirant action synergistically derived from the natural extract combined with a tapioca starch, calcium sodium phosphosilicate and diatomaceous earth as absorbents and pH modifiers.

The formulation can be free of aluminum, parabens, D5 silicone, BHT, phenoxyethanol, dyes, and alcohol.

The use of the lotus flower extracts and magnesium salts can help this formulation provide beneficial antiperspirant action without the use of aluminum salts and other environmentally unfriendly components.Thus, this formulation is an eco-friendly approach. This example formulation can be provided in an aerosol format. An example of this formulation is summarized in the below Table:

This example formulation is a natural, sustainable formulation with antiperspirant properties. This formulation includes a single emollient, conventional aluminum salts, and includes tapioca starch for better sensorial, dry, and softness to touch, in combination with the lotus flower extracts. This example formulation can be provided in an aerosol format. An example of this formulation is summarized in the below Table:

[0051] Tapioca starch formulation antiperspirant. The forth example antiperspirant formulation using the Nelupure component can include a tapioca starch for use in a roll-on format. Here, the formulation is again aluminum-free, and the lotus extract based ingredients help replace the action of a traditional aluminum based antiperspirant.
[0052] This formulation includes Nelupure (Propanediol (and) Glycerin (and)Nymphaea Caerulea Flower Extract (and) Nelumbo Nucifera Flower Extract), which can act as an astringent and does not block pores. For example, a consumer can apply an aerosol form antiperspirant formulation by spraying the aerosol formulation onto the affected area(s), such as armpits, to reduce perspiration, and depending on the formulation, reduce or eliminate odor associated with the perspiration. In another example, a consumer can apply a roll-on form antiperspirant formulation by rolling the formulation onto the affected area(s), such as armpits, to reduce perspiration, and depending on the formulation, reduce or eliminate odor associated with the perspiration. In some cases, the consumer may re-apply the formulation as desired.Examples

[0059] Example 1. Aluminum-Free Antiperspirant Formulation with Lotus Flower Extract.
[0060] In Example 1, sample formulations of an antiperspirant with lotus flower extract were made and tested according to Table 5:

[0062] The sample formulation was produced and tested to Assess the antiperspirant effect of the investigational product after 48 and 72 hours of the last application on the underarms of research participants, through a gravimetric evaluation, according to theGUIDELINES FOR EFFECTIVENESS TESTING OF OTC ANTIPERSPIRANT DRUG PRODUCTS (FDA).
[0063] Methodology. Here, a sample deodorant spray was produced according to the formula of Table 5, for consumer testing on 17 female participants and 17 male participants. The participants were aged between 18 and 55 years.
[0064] The methodology included suspending the use of any deodorant, ointment, cream or any other product in the armpit region for 17 days and washing them only with the soap provided by the researcher. After the conditioning period, the armpits were cleaned with neutral soap diluted at 2%. The initial assessment was carried out in a sauna to check the amount of sweat produced by the armpit without applying any product. To be approved, the research participant must produce at least lOOmg of sweat per armpit during two consecutive 20-minute sessions (T1 and T2). Once approved, the armpits were cleaned again, then the experimental product was applied to one armpit, while the other armpit remained without any product being applied.
[0065] The sample formulation was applied for 4 consecutive days. After the last application of the sample formulation, the participant was instructed not to wet, wash or apply any product to the armpits for the next 72 hours. After 48 and 72 hours of the last application of the investigational product, research participants were exposed to heat in a sauna.
[0066] Results. After 48 and 72 hours of the last application of the investigational product, 91.18% of the research participants showed a reduction of at least 20% in sweating.
[0067] To allow for quantified analysis of sweat production, participants were approved if they had a quantity of sweating equal to or greater than 100 mg per armpit at each measured time T1 and T2. When in the study pre-treatment (baseline) records were used. The ratio of the treated armpit with the product adjusted to the ratio of the right-to-left armpit sweating rate was defined by the following calculation:Z = (PC x T) / (PT x C)
[0068] Where Z is the adjusted ratio, PC is the amount of sweat obtained in the pretreatment for the control armpit, PT is the amount of sweat obtained in the pre-treatment for the armpit that will receive the treatment, T is the amount of sweat obtained for the armpit with the sample formulation, and C is the amount of sweat obtained from the control armpit.
[0069] The individualized results of this study are summarized below in Table 6 (at 48 hours after application) and Table 7 (at 72 hours after application). The Tables show the values of sweating obtained in the pre-treatment to the armpit control and the armpit that willreceive the treatment (T1 + T2), values of sweating obtained for the treated armpit and armpit control 24 and 48 hours after the last application of the product (T3 + T4) and (T5 + T6), the value of Z and the subtraction of 0.80 from Z.

Overall, the percent of research participants with a sweat reduction of greater than 20% for when using the sample formulation was 91.18% at 48 hours after application.
[0073] By comparison, at 72 hours, the mean value of Z was 0.72, the median value was 0.69, the minimum value was 0.57, and the maximum value was 1.04. [0074] Overall, the testing showed that at least 50% of the research participants had a reduction in sweating of at least 20%. Accordingly, the sample formulation showed a reduction in sweating 48 and 72 hours after application.

CLAIMSWhat is claimed is:
1. A cosmetic formulation comprising: an emollient; an odor absorbing agent comprising a powder, the odor absorbing agent in an amount of 0.1 to 25.0 wt. % of the formulation; and lotus flower extract in an amount of 0.0001 to 10.00 wt. % of the formulation, wherein the cosmetic formulation is an antiperspirant, reducing sweat by at least 10% over a 72-hour period, and wherein the cosmetic formulation is a deodorant.
2. The cosmetic formulation of claim 1, wherein the cosmetic formulation reduces sweat by at least 20% over a 72-hour period.
3. The cosmetic formulation of claim 1, wherein the cosmetic formulation reduces sweat by at least 20% over a 48-hour period.
4. The cosmetic formulation of claim 1, wherein the formulation is astringent.
5. The cosmetic formulation of claim 1, wherein the lotus flower extract comprises nymphaea coerulea flower extract and nelumbo nucifera flower extract.
6. The cosmetic formulation of claim 5, wherein the nymphaea coerulea flower extract is in an amount of 0.0001 to 5.00 wt. % of the formulation.
7. The cosmetic formulation of claim 5, wherein the nelumbo nucifera flower extract is in an amount of 0.0001 to 5.00 wt. % of the formulation.
8. The cosmetic formulation of claim 1, wherein the odor absorbing agent is selected from the group comprising magnesium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, tapioca starch, calcium sodium phosphosilicate, diatomaceous earth, aluminum chlorohydrate, and combinations thereof.
9. The cosmetic formulation of claim 1, wherein the odor absorbing agent comprises magnesium containing compounds.
10. The cosmetic formulation of claim 1, wherein the odor absorbing agent comprises tapioca starch.
12. The cosmetic formulation of claim 1, wherein the cosmetic formulation does not include aluminum containing compounds.

15. The cosmetic formulation of claim 14, wherein the deodorant is in an amount of 0.1 to 10.0 wt. % of the formulation.
16. The cosmetic formulation of claim 1, further comprising a propellent selected from the group comprising butane, isobutane, propane, and combinations thereof.
