Description

WIRELESS COMMUNICATION METHOD FOR DEALING WITH PARALLEL DOWNLINK TRANSMISSION FROM ONE OR MULTIPLE ACCESS POINT MULTI-LINK DEVICES AFFILIATED TO SINGLE MOBILITY DOMAINBACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION1. FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The present disclosure relates to wireless communications, and more particularly, to a wireless communication method for dealing with parallel downlink (DL) transmission (e.g., parallel transmission of DL data frames) from one or multiple access point (AP) multi-link devices (MLDs) affiliated to a single mobility domain (SMD) .

[0002] 2. DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART

[0003] Wireless local area network (WLAN) is a network that uses wireless communication technology (e.g., Wi-Fi technology) to transmit / receive data within a limited range. Hence, a WLAN system may include a plurality of WLAN devices such as Wi-Fi devices including at least one access point (AP) and at least one non-AP station (STA) . With development of the Wi-Fi technology, a multi-AP (MAP) system is proposed. In the MAP system (also called SMD (single mobility domain) ) , there are multiple APs (e.g., AP multi-link devices (MLDs) ) coordinated to serve non-AP STAs (e.g., non-AP MLDs) . When a non-AP STA (e.g., a non-AP MLD) travels from a first position within a service area of a first AP (e.g., a current / serving AP MLD) in the MAP system to a second position within a service area of a second AP (e.g., a target AP MLD) in the same MAP system, it is possible that the non-AP STA (e.g., non-AP MLD) may initiate transition (also called roaming) from the first AP in the MAP system to the second AP in the same MAP system. During a roaming period, a non-AP MLD may have set up links with a current / serving AP MLD and a target AP MLD concurrently, such that DL transmission from multiple links of different AP MLDs may happen.

[0004] Thus, there is a need for an innovative design for dealing with parallel DL transmission (e.g., parallel transmission of DL data frames) from one or multiple AP MLDs affiliated to an SMD during a non-roaming period or a roaming period.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0005] One of the objectives of the claimed invention is to provide a wireless communication method for dealing with parallel downlink (DL) transmission (e.g., parallel transmission of DL data frames) from one or multiple access point (AP) multi-link devices (MLDs) affiliated to a single mobility domain (SMD) .

[0006] According to a first aspect of the present invention, an exemplary wireless communication method is disclosed. The exemplary wireless communication method includes: receiving a first media access control (MAC) protocol data unit (MPDU) from a first sender affiliated to a single mobility domain (SMD) ; determining a reordering buffer index according to at least a traffic identifier (TID) and an SMD-level indication; and maintaining one MPDU derived from the first MPDU in a reordering buffer according to the reordering buffer index.

[0007] According to a second aspect of the present invention, an exemplary wireless communication method is disclosed. The exemplary wireless communication method includes: receiving a first media access control (MAC) protocol data unit (MPDU) from a first sender affiliated to a single mobility domain (SMD) ; deriving an address from at least an SMD MAC address of the SMD; and performing decryption upon the first MPDU according to the address.

[0008] According to a third aspect of the present invention, an exemplary wireless communication method is disclosed. The exemplary wireless communication method includes: deriving an address from at least an SMD MAC address of a single mobility domain (SMD) ; generating a media access control (MAC) protocol data unit (MPDU) , comprising: performing encryption according to the address; and transmitting the MPDU to a recipient that associates with the SMD.

[0009] These and other objectives of the present invention will no doubt become obvious to those of ordinary skill in the art after reading the following detailed description of the preferred embodiment that is illustrated in the various figures and drawings.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0021] Certain terms are used throughout the following description and claims, which refer to particular components. As one skilled in the art will appreciate, electronic equipment manufacturers may refer to a component by different names. This document does not intend to distinguish between components that differ in name but not in function. In the following description and in the claims, the terms "include" and "comprise" are used in an open-ended fashion, and thus should be interpreted to mean "include, but not limited to ... " . Also, the term "couple" is intended to mean either an indirect or direct electrical connection. Accordingly, if one device is coupled to another device, that connection may be through a direct electrical connection, or through an indirect electrical connection via other devices and connections.

[0022] FIG. 1 is a diagram illustrating a first parallel DL data transmission scenario according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. A wireless communication system 100 may be a WLAN system compliant with IEEE 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7) standard, IEEE 802.11bn (Wi-Fi 8) standard or a next-generation WLAN / Wi-Fi standard. The wireless communication system 100 includes a MAP system 102 that includes multiple APs. For brevity and simplicity, only two APs 106 and 108 are shown in FIG. 1. In addition, a non-AP STA 104 is currently associated with AP 106 of MAP system 102. It should be noted that an AP of the MAP system 102 may be an AP MLD which owns multiple links working on different radio-frequency (RF) bands and capable of operating at the same time, or may be a non-MLD AP. The MAP system 102 that supports the proposed MPDU encryption / decryption scheme and / or the proposed reordering buffer indexing scheme may be formed by multiple AP MLDs, multiple non-MLD APs, or a combination thereof. In this embodiment, the APs 106 and 108 are implemented by AP MLDs that act as a current AP MLD (also called serving AP MLD) and a target AP MLD both involved in a roaming procedure. For example, the current AP MLD 106 may have two affiliated APs (labeled by “AP1” and “AP2” ) , and the target AP MLD 108 may have two affiliated APs (labeled by “AP3” and “AP4” ) . Multiple AP MLDs may be non-collocated and connected via a wired / wireless backhaul 109. In this embodiment, the non-AP STA 104 is implemented by a non-AP MLD that includes two affiliated STAs (labeled by “STA1” and “STA2” ) . Hence, the non-AP MLD 104 is connected to the current AP MLD 106 through multiple links (labeled by “Link 1” and “Link 2” ) 110 and 112.

[0023] Specifically, AP MLDs 106 and 108 are affiliated to the same single mobility domain (SMD) , and the SMD forms the MAP system 102. In the following, the terms “SMD” and “MAP system” may be interchangeable. An SMD media access control (MAC) address can be assigned to uniquely identify the SMD (or the MAP system 102 formed in the SMD) . In addition, each of the AP MLDs affiliated to the same SMD (or the MAP system 102 formed in the SMD) has its own MAC address (also called AP MLD address) , and each of the APs affiliated to the same AP MLD has its own MAC address (also called link address) . Similarly, each of the non-AP MLDs associates with the same SMD (or the MAP system 102 formed in the SMD) has its own MAC address (also called non-AP MLD address) , and each of the non-AP STAs affiliated to the same non-AP MLD has its own MAC address.

[0024] When the non-AP MLD 104 moves from a current location P1 to a different location P2, the non-AP MLD 104 may want to have transition (roaming) from the current AP MLD 106 to the target AP MLD 108, and may initiate a seamless roaming procedure. Before the non-AP MLD 104 initiates the seamless roaming procedure (i.e., during a non-roaming period) , DL data frames (also called MAC protocol data units (MPDUs) ) can be transmitted from multiple APs (e.g., AP1 and AP2) affiliated to the current AP MLD 106 through multiple links 110 and 112 set up with the non-AP MLD 104.

[0025] When the non-AP MLD 104 travels to the location P2, it may initiate the seamless roaming procedure. FIG. 2 is a diagram illustrating a second parallel DL data transmission scenario according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. After the seamless roaming procedure is initiated (i.e., during a roaming period) , the non-AP MLD 104 is roaming from one AP MLD (i.e., current AP MLD 106) to another AP MLD (i.e., target AP MLD 108) . During the roaming period, the original link 110 may still stay connected between the non-AP MLD 104 and the current AP MLD 106, whereas the original link 112 is disconnected between the non-AP MLD 104 and the current AP MLD 106. As shown in FIG. 2, a new link 212 may be set up between the non-AP MLD 104 and the target AP MLD 106. Hence, DL data frames (MPDUs) can be transmitted from multiple APs affiliated to different AP MLDs 106 and 108 before the seamless roaming procedure is completed (i.e., during the roaming period) .

[0026] In accordance with the proposed MPDU encryption / decryption scheme, one input data used by MPDU encryption / decryption (particularly, additional authentication data (AAD) construction and arbitrary number used only once (Nonce) construction) may be derived from a peer MLD MAC address peer_MLD, an SMD MAC address peer_SMD, or a combination thereof. In accordance with the proposed reordering buffer indexing scheme, one input data used for setting a reordering buffer index may be derived from an SMD MAC address peer_SMD or an SMD identifier (ID) SMD_ID, and another input data used for setting the reordering buffer index may be a traffic identifier TID. Further details of the proposed MPDU encryption / decryption scheme and reordering buffer indexing scheme are described as below with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0027] FIG. 3 is a diagram illustrating a wireless communication system that supports the proposed MPDU encryption / decryption scheme and reordering buffer indexing scheme according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The wireless communication system 300 may be a WLAN system compliant with IEEE 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7) , IEEE 802.11bn (Wi-Fi 8) standard, or a next-generation WLAN / Wi-Fi standard. The wireless communication system 300 includes a plurality of wireless communication devices, such as a non-AP MLD 302 and multiple AP MLDs 304_1-304_N (N≥2) , where the AP MLDs 304_1-304_N are affiliated to the same SMD in which an MAP system 303 is formed, and two of the AP MLDs 304_1-304_N can communication with each other through connection 305 such as a wired / wireless backhaul. The wireless communication system 100 shown in FIG. 1 and FIG. 2 may be realized by the wireless communication system 300, the MAP system 102 shown in FIG. 1 and FIG. 2 may be realized by the MAP system 303, the current AP MLD 106 shown in FIG. 1 and FIG. 2 may be realized by the AP MLD 304_1, the target AP MLD 108 shown in FIG. 1 and FIG. 2 may be realized by the AP MLD 304_N, and the non-AP MLD 104 shown in FIG. 1 and FIG. 2 may be realized by the non-AP MLD 302.

[0028] By way of example, but not limitation, non-AP MLD 302 and AP MLDs 304_1-304_N may have the same or similar circuit structure. As shown in FIG. 3, non-AP MLD 302 / AP MLD 304_1 / AP MLD 304_N may include a processor 312 / 322_1 / 322_N, a memory 314 / 324_1 / 324_N, a control circuit 316 / 326_1 / 326_N, and a network interface circuit 317 / 327_1 / 327_N, where the network interface circuit 317 / 327_1 / 327_N may include a transmitter (TX) circuit 318 / 328_1 / 328_N and a receiver (RX) circuit 320 / 330_1 / 330_N. In addition, the TX circuit 318 / 328_1 / 328_N may include multiple TX chains for different RF bands, and the RX circuit 320 / 330_1 / 330_N may include multiple RX chains for different RF bands. In other words, multiple links may exist between the non-AP MLD 302 and any of the AP MLDs 304_1-304_N.

[0029] The memory 314 / 324_1 / 324_N is arranged to store a program code. In this embodiment, reordering buffers may be allocated in the memory 314 and accessible to the control circuit 316, where the memory 314 may be implemented by a dynamic random access memory (DRAM) , a static random access memory (SRAM) , or any component with data storage capability. The processor 312 / 322_1 / 322_N is arranged to load and execute the program code to manage the non-AP MLD 302 / AP MLD 304_1 / AP MLD 304_N. The control circuit 316 / 326_1 / 326_N is arranged to control communications with other WLAN devices (e.g., Wi-Fi devices) . For example, the control circuit 316 / 326_1 / 326_N controls the TX circuit 318 / 328_1 / 328_N of the network interface circuit 317 / 327_1 / 327_N to send packets (i.e., physical layer protocol data units (PPDUs) ) , and controls the RX circuit 320 / 322_1 / 322_N of the network interface circuit 317 / 327_1 / 327_N to receive packets (i.e., PPDUs) , where one or more media access control (MAC) frames (i.e., one or more MPDUs) may be carried by the same packet (i.e., one PPDU) , and one or more MAC service data units (MSDUs) may be carried by the same MAC frame (i.e., one MPDU) .

[0030] It should be noted that only the components pertinent to the present disclosure are illustrated in FIG. 3. In practice, each of non-AP MLD 302 and AP MLDs 304_1-304_N may include additional components to achieve designated functions.

[0031] Regarding parallel DL data transmission over multiple links, at least one of the AP MLDs 304_1-304_N acts as an MPDU sender, and the non-AP MLD 302 acts as an MPDU recipient. In this embodiment, the non-AP MLD 302 and AP MLDs 304_1-304_N support the proposed MPDU encryption / decryption scheme and reordering buffer indexing scheme. As shown in FIG. 3, the control circuit 316 of the non-AP MLD 302 supports an MPDU decryption function (denoted by “GCMP / CCMP” ) and a reordering buffer management function (denoted by “ROB MGMT” ) , the control circuit 326_1 of the AP MLD 304_1 supports an MPDU encryption function (denoted by “GCMP / CCMP” ) , and the control circuit 326_N of the AP MLD 304_N supports an MPDU encryption function (denoted by “GCMP / CCMP” ) . The MPDU encryption function may perform Galois / Counter Mode Protocol (GCMP) encapsulation or Counter CBC-MAC Protocol (CCMP) encapsulation. For example, the GCMP / CCMP encapsulation may include AAD construction and Nonce construction. The MPDU decryption function may perform GCMP decapsulation or CCMP decapsulation. For example, the GCMP / CCMP decapsulation may include AAD construction and Nonce construction. The reordering buffer management function may determine a reordering buffer index of a reordering buffer, where the reordering buffer is responsible for reordering MSDUs or aggregate MSDUs (A-MSDUs) so that MSDUs or A-MSDUs are eventually passed up to an upper layer in the order of received sequence number.

[0032] FIG. 4 is a diagram illustrating a first RX architecture according to an embodiment of the present invention. The first RX architecture can be applied during a non-roaming period, and may have a plurality of procedures, including a sequence number (SN) detection procedure, an MPDU decryption procedure, a reordering buffer procedure, and a packet number (PN) replay check procedure. Considering a case where the non-AP MLD 104 shown in FIG. 1 is implemented by the non-AP MLD 302 shown in FIG. 3 and the current AP MLD 106 shown in FIG. 1 is implemented by the AP MLD 304_1 shown in FIG. 3, the control circuit 316 of the non-AP MLD 302 may adopt the first RX architecture for dealing with data frames (MPDUs) that are parallel transmitted from AP MLD 304_1 over multiple links set up between non-AP MLD 302 and AP MLD 304_1. Specifically, the wireless interface circuit 317 (particularly, RX circuit 320 of wireless interface circuit 317) receives data frames (MPDUs) of the same TID from different setup links with the same peer MLD (i.e., AP MLD 304_1) . The AP MLD 304_1 is the MPDU sender, and the non-AP MLD 302 is the MPDU recipient. The control circuit 326_1 of the AP MLD 304_1 generates MPDUs, and instructs the wireless interface circuit 327_1 (particularly, TX circuit 328_1 of wireless interface circuit 327_1) to transmit the MPDUs of the same TID over different links, where the different links are established between APs affiliated to the same AP MLD 304_1 and STAs affiliated to the same non-AP MLD 302, respectively. In this embodiment, when generating MPDUs for parallel DL data transmission, the AP MLD 304_1 (particularly, control circuit 326_1 of AP MLD 304_1) encrypts MPDUs with its MAC address for AAD / Nonce construction. In other words, a first MPDU to be transmitted over a 1st link Link1 between AP MLD 304_1 and non-AP MLD 302 is encrypted with an AP MLD MAC address of the AP MLD 304_1, a 2nd MPDU to be transmitted over a 2nd link Link2 between AP MLD 304_1 and non-AP MLD 302 is encrypted with the same AP MLD MAC address of the AP MLD 304_1, and an Nth MPDU to be transmitted over an Nth link LinkN between AP MLD 304_1 and non-AP MLD 302 is encrypted with the same AP MLD MAC address of the AP MLD 304_1, where MAC headers of 1st MPDU to Nth MPDU carry the same TID. It should be noted that there is no extra MAC address involved in AP’s encryption procedure.

[0033] The MPDU decryption procedure for one MPDU requires the MLD MAC address (i.e., AP MLD MAC address of AP MLD 304_1) for AAD / Nonce construction, and further requires selected subfields in the MAC header. It should be noted that the transmitter address (i.e., Address 2 (A2) data) for Nonce construction is also set to the MLD MAC address (i.e., AP MLD MAC address of AP MLD 304_1) for individual addressed data frames. Hence, the same MLD MAC address (i.e., AP MLD MAC address of AP MLD 304_1) is used by decryption performed upon MPDUs received from different links between AP MLD 304_1 and non-AP MLD 302.

[0034] The reordering buffer procedure determines a reordering buffer index for an MPDU according to a TID of the MPDU and an SMD-level indication. In this embodiment, the SMD-level indication is an SMD MAC address of an SMD in which the MAP system 303 is formed. Since the AP MLD 304_1 transmits MPDUs of the same TID over different setup links for parallel DL data transmission, the control circuit 316 determines the same reordering buffer index (i.e., the same <peer_SMD, TID> tuple) for MPDUs that are received from different links under parallel DL data transmission, and maintain processed MPDUs (i.e., MPDUs after decryption) derived from the MPDUs received from different links in a reordering buffer according to the same reordering buffer index (i.e., the same <peer_SMD, TID> tuple) . To put it simply, a recipient MLD shall maintain a single common receive reordering buffer for each <peer_SMD, TID> tuple under a block ack agreement, independent of the number of links that are setup.

[0035] As mentioned above, the reordering buffer procedure requires an SMD-level indication such as an SMD MAC address of an SMD in which the MAP system 303 is formed. In some embodiments of the present invention, the control circuit 316 of the non-AP MLD 302 may perform a single-layer address lookup procedure for determining an SMD MAC address that is mapped to a transmitter address (TA) of a sender AP, as illustrated in FIG. 5. Each of the APs affiliated to the same AP MLD has its own MAC address (also called link address) . Hence, mapping the link address (TA) of a sender AP in the AP MLD 304_1 to the SMD MAC address of the SMD is done before the reordering buffer procedure is initiated.

[0036] FIG. 6 is a diagram illustrating a second RX architecture according to an embodiment of the present invention. The second RX architecture can be applied during a roaming period, and may have a plurality of procedures, including an SN detection procedure, an MPDU decryption procedure, a reordering buffer procedure, and a PN replay check procedure. Considering a case where the non-AP MLD 104 shown in FIG. 2 is implemented by the non-AP MLD 302 shown in FIG. 3, the current AP MLD 106 shown in FIG. 2 is implemented by the AP MLD 304_1 shown in FIG. 3, and the target AP MLD 108 shown in FIG. 2 is implemented by the AP MLD 304_N shown in FIG. 3, the control circuit 316 of the non-AP MLD 302 may adopt the second RX architecture for dealing with data frames (MPDUs) that are parallel transmitted from AP MLDs 304_1, 304_N over multiple links set up between non-AP MLD 302 and AP MLDs 304_1, 304_N. Specifically, the wireless interface circuit 317 (particularly, RX circuit 320 of wireless interface circuit 317) receives data frames (MPDUs) of the same TID from different setup links with different non-collocated AP MLDs (i.e., AP MLDs 304_1 and 304_N) . The AP MLDs 304_1 and 304_N are MPDU senders, and the non-AP MLD 302 is the MPDU recipient. The control circuit 326_1 of the AP MLD 304_1 generates a first MPDU, and instructs the wireless interface circuit 327_1 (particularly, TX circuit 328_1 of wireless interface circuit 327_1) to transmit the first MPDU of a TID over a first link, where the first link is established between one AP affiliated to the AP MLD 304_1 and one STA affiliated to the non-AP MLD 302. In addition, the control circuit 326_N of the AP MLD 304_N generates a second MPDU, and instructs the wireless interface circuit 327_N (particularly, TX circuit 328_N of wireless interface circuit 327_N) to transmit the second MPDU of the same TID over a second link, where the second link is established between one AP affiliated to the AP MLD 304_N and another STA affiliated to the non-AP MLD 302.

[0037] In this embodiment, when generating the first MPDU being one of MPDUs for parallel DL data transmission, the AP MLD 304_1 (particularly, control circuit 326_1 of AP MLD 304_1) encrypts the first MPDU with its MAC address for AAD / Nonce construction; and when generating the second MPDU being another of MPDUs for parallel DL data transmission, the AP MLD 304_N (particularly, control circuit 326_N of AP MLD 304_N) encrypts the second MPDU with its MAC address for AAD / Nonce construction. In other words, the first MPDU to be transmitted over a 1st link Link1 between AP MLD 304_1 and non-AP MLD 302 is encrypted with an AP MLD MAC address of the AP MLD 304_1, and the second MPDU to be transmitted over a 2nd link Link2 between AP MLD 304_N and non-AP MLD 302 is encrypted with an AP MLD MAC address of the AP MLD 304_N, where MAC headers of 1st MPDU and 2nd MPDU carry the same TID. It should be noted that there is no extra MAC address involved in AP’s encryption procedure.

[0038] The MPDU decryption procedure for one MPDU requires an MLD MAC address for AAD / Nonce construction, and further requires selected subfields in the MAC header. Since the MPDUs received from different links include the first MPDU generated and transmitted from the AP MLD 304_1 and the second MPDU generated and transmitted from the AP MLD 304_N, multiple AP MLD addresses (i.e., AP MLD MAC address of AP MLD 304_1 and AP MLD MAC address of AP MLD 304_N) are required by the MPDU decryption procedure for multiple MPDUs. Hence, the AP MLD MAC address of AP MLD 304_1 is used by decryption performed upon the first MPDU received from the 1st link Link1 between AP MLD 304_1 and non-AP MLD 302, and the AP MLD MAC address of AP MLD 304_N is used by decryption performed upon the second MPDU received from the 2nd link Link2 between AP MLD 304_N and non-AP MLD 302.

[0039] It should be noted that the MPDU decryption procedure may need to differentiate the MPDU’s source to apply the correct AP MLD MAC address for AAD / Nonce construction. For example, an extra indicator to indicate the MPDU’s source may be needed.

[0040] The reordering buffer procedure determines a reordering buffer index for an MPDU according to a TID of the MPDU and an SMD-level indication. In this embodiment, the SMD-level indication is an SMD MAC address of an SMD in which the MAP system 303 is formed. Since the AP MLDs 304_1, 304_N transmit MPDUs of the same TID over different setup links, the control circuit 316 determines the same reordering buffer index (i.e., the same <peer_SMD, TID> tuple) for MPDUs that are received from different links under parallel DL data transmission, and maintains processed MPDUs (i.e., MPDUs after decryption) derived from the MPDUs received from different links in a reordering buffer according to the same reordering buffer index (i.e., the same <peer_SMD, TID>tuple) . To put it simply, a recipient MLD shall maintain a single common receive reordering buffer for each <peer_SMD, TID> tuple under a block ack agreement, independent of the number of links that are setup.

[0041] As mentioned above, the reordering buffer procedure requires an SMD-level indication such as an SMD MAC address of an SMD in which the MAP system 303 is formed. In some embodiments of the present invention, the control circuit 316 of the non-AP MLD 302 may perform a single-layer address lookup procedure for determining an SMD MAC address from a link address (TA) , as illustrated in FIG. 5. Each of the APs affiliated to the same AP MLD has its own MAC address (also called link address) . Hence, mapping the link address (TA) of a sender AP in the AP MLD 304_1 / 304_N to the SMD MAC address of the SMD is done before the reordering buffer procedure is initiated.

[0042] FIG. 7 is a diagram illustrating a third RX architecture according to an embodiment of the present invention. The third RX architecture can be applied during a non-roaming period, and may have a plurality of procedures, including an SN detection procedure, an MPDU decryption procedure, a reordering buffer procedure, and a PN replay check procedure. Considering a case where the non-AP MLD 104 shown in FIG. 1 is implemented by the non-AP MLD 302 shown in FIG. 3 and the current AP MLD 106 shown in FIG. 1 is implemented by the AP MLD 304_1 shown in FIG. 3, the control circuit 316 of the non-AP MLD 302 may adopt the third RX architecture for dealing with data frames (MPDUs) that are parallel transmitted from AP MLD 304_1 over multiple links set up between non-AP MLD 302 and AP MLD 304_1. The control circuit 326_1 of the AP MLD 304_1 generates MPDUs, and instructs the wireless interface circuit 327_1 (particularly, TX circuit 328_1 of wireless interface circuit 327_1) to transmit the MPDUs of the same TID over different setup links, where the different setup links are established between APs affiliated to the same AP MLD 304_1 and STAs affiliated to the same non-AP MLD 302, respectively. In this embodiment, when generating MPDUs for parallel DL data transmission, the AP MLD 304_1 (particularly, control circuit 326_1 of AP MLD 304_1) encrypts MPDUs with an SMD MAC address of an SMD for AAD / Nonce construction, where the AP MLD 304_1 is affiliated to the SMD in which the MAP system 303 is formed. In other words, a first MPDU to be transmitted over a 1st link Link1 between AP MLD 304_1 and non-AP MLD 302 is encrypted with the SMD MAC address, a 2nd MPDU to be transmitted over a second link Link2 between AP MLD 304_1 and non-AP MLD 302 is encrypted with the same SMD MAC address, and an Nth MPDU to be transmitted over an Nth link LinkN between AP MLD 304_1 and non-AP MLD 302 is encrypted with the same SMD MAC address, where MAC headers of 1st MPDU to Nth MPDU carry the same TID.

[0043] The MPDU decryption procedure for one MPDU requires the SMD MAC address for AAD / Nonce construction, and further requires selected subfields in the MAC header. It should be noted that the transmitter address (i.e., A2 data) for Nonce construction is also set to the SMD MAC address. Hence, the same SMD MAC address is used by decryption performed upon MPDUs received from different links between AP MLD 304_1 and non-AP MLD 302.

[0044] The reordering buffer procedure determines a reordering buffer index for an MPDU according to a TID of the MPDU and an SMD-level indication. In this embodiment, the SMD-level indication is an SMD MAC address of an SMD in which the MAP system 303 is formed. Since the AP MLD 304_1 transmits MPDUs of the same TID over different setup links, the control circuit 316 determines the same reordering buffer index (i.e., the same <peer_SMD, TID> tuple) for MPDUs that are received from different links under parallel DL data transmission, and maintains processed MPDUs (i.e., MPDUs after decryption) derived from the MPDUs received from different links in a reordering buffer according to the same reordering buffer index (i.e., the same <peer_SMD, TID>tuple) . To put it simply, a recipient MLD shall maintain a single common receive reordering buffer for each <peer_SMD, TID> tuple under a block ack agreement, independent of the number of links that are setup.

[0045] As mentioned above, the MPDU decryption procedure and the reordering buffer procedure both require an SMD-level indication such as an SMD MAC address of an SMD in which the MAP system 303 is formed. In some embodiments of the present invention, the control circuit 316 of the non-AP MLD 302 may perform a single-layer address lookup procedure for determining an SMD MAC address that is mapped to a transmitter address (TA) , as illustrated in FIG. 5. Each of the APs affiliated to the same AP MLD has its own MAC address (also called link address) . Hence, mapping the link address (TA) of a sender AP in the AP MLD 304_1 to the SMD MAC address of the SMD is done before the reordering buffer procedure is initiated.

[0046] FIG. 8 is a diagram illustrating a fourth RX architecture according to an embodiment of the present invention. The fourth RX architecture can be applied during a roaming period, and may have a plurality of procedures, including an SN detection procedure, an MPDU decryption procedure, a reordering buffer procedure, and a PN replay check procedure. 3, the control circuit 316 of the non-AP MLD 302 may adopt the fourth RX architecture for dealing with data frames (MPDUs) that are parallel transmitted from AP MLDs 304_1, 304_N over multiple links set up between non-AP MLD 302 and AP MLDs 304_1, 304_N. The control circuit 326_1 of the AP MLD 304_1 generates a first MPDU, and instructs the wireless interface circuit 327_1 (particularly, TX circuit 328_1 of wireless interface circuit 327_1) to transmit the first MPDU of a TID over a first setup link, where the first setup link is established between one AP affiliated to the AP MLD 304_1 and one STA affiliated to the non-AP MLD 302. In addition, the control circuit 326_N of the AP MLD 304_N generates a second MPDU, and instructs the wireless interface circuit 327_N (particularly, TX circuit 328_N of wireless interface circuit 327_N) to transmit the second MPDU of the same TID over a second setup link, where the second setup link is established between one AP affiliated to the AP MLD 304_N and another STA affiliated to the non-AP MLD 302.

[0047] In this embodiment, when generating a first MPDU being one of MPDUs for parallel DL data transmission, the AP MLD 304_1 (particularly, control circuit 326_1 of AP MLD 304_1) encrypts the first MPDU with an SMD MAC address of an SMD for AAD / Nonce construction, where the AP MLD 304_1 is affiliated to the SMD in which the MAP system 303 is formed. In addition, when generating a second MPDU being another of MPDUs for parallel DL data transmission, the AP MLD 304_N (particularly, control circuit 326_N of AP MLD 304_N) encrypts the second MPDU with the SMD MAC address of the SMD for AAD / Nonce construction, where the AP MLD 304_N is also affiliated to the SMD in which the MAP system 303 is formed. In other words, the first MPDU to be transmitted over a 1st link Link1 between AP MLD 304_1 and non-AP MLD 302 is encrypted with an SMD MAC address, and the 2nd MPDU to be transmitted over a second link Link2 between AP MLD 304_N and non-AP MLD 302 is encrypted with the same SMD MAC address, where MAC headers of 1st MPDU and 2nd MPDU carry the same TID.

[0048] The MPDU decryption procedure for one MPDU requires the SMD MAC address for AAD / Nonce construction, and further requires selected subfields in the MAC header. The MPDUs received from different links include the first MPDU generated and transmitted from the AP MLD 304_1 and the second MPDU generated and transmitted from the AP MLD 304_N. Since a MAC address used by AAD / Nonce construction of AP’s MPDU encryption procedure is the SMD MAC address that is common to AP MLDs 304_1 and 304_N, the SMD MAC address is used by decryption performed upon the first MPDU received from the 1st link Link1 between AP MLD 304_1 and non-AP MLD 302, and is also used by decryption performed upon the second MPDU received from the 2nd link Link2 between AP MLD 304_N and non-AP MLD 302. Since a single MAC address (i.e., SMD MAC address) is involved in AP’s encryption procedure, the MPDU decryption procedure does not need to differentiate the MPDU’s source.

[0049] It should be noted that, for transmission to different generations of WLAN devices, the MAC address for encryption may be different. For example, an EHT (Extremely High Throughput) multi-link device may use an MLD MAC address for encryption, a pre-EHT device may use an AP MLD MAC address for encryption, and an UHR (Ultra High Reliability) multi-link device may use an SMD MAC address for encryption. However, this is for illustrative purposes only, and is not meant to be a limitation of the present invention.

[0050] The reordering buffer procedure determines a reordering buffer index for an MPDU according to a TID of the MPDU and an SMD-level indication.

[0051] As mentioned above, the reordering buffer procedure requires an SMD-level indication such as an SMD MAC address of an SMD in which the MAP system 303 is formed.

[0052] If the fourth architecture is used, all data frames (PPDUs) from AP MLDs of the same MAP system may be always encrypted with the SMD MAC address. Alternatively, if the fourth architecture is used, the SMD MAC address may be only applied during the roaming period.

[0053] As mentioned above, the AP-side MPDU encryption procedure requires an address (e.g., AP MLD MAC address or SMD MAC address) for AAD / Nonce construction, and the STA-side MPDU decryption procedure requires the same address (e.g., AP MLD MAC address or SMD MAC address) used by the AP-side MPDU encryption procedure for AAD / Nonce construction. However, this is for illustrative purposes only, and is not meant to be a limitation of the present invention. In some embodiments of the present invention, an address required by both of the AP-side MPDU encryption procedure and the STA-side MPDU decryption procedure may be derived from jointly considering the AP MLD MAC address and the SMD MAC address.

[0054] In a first alternative design, an address required by both of the AP-side MPDU encryption procedure and the STA-side MPDU decryption procedure may be set by combination of the SMD MAC address and the AP MLD MAC address, wherein the SMD MAC address and the AP MLD MAC address are fully included in the address. For example, the MPDU decryption procedure of the first RX architecture may be modified, where the peer MLD MAC address is replaced by both of the SMD MAC address and the AP MLD MAC address. For another example, the MPDU decryption procedure of the second RX architecture may be modified, where the AP MLD1 MAC address is replaced by both of the AP MLD1 AMC address and the SMD MAC address, and the AP MLD2 MAC address is replaced by both of the AP MLD2 AMC address and the SMD MAC address.

[0055] In a second alternative design, an address required by both of the AP-side MPDU encryption procedure and the STA-side MPDU decryption procedure may be set by combination of a part of the SMD MAC address and a part of the AP MLD MAC address, wherein each of the SMD MAC address and the AP MLD MAC address is partially included in the address. Specifically, the first N bits of an M-bit address used for encryption / decryption are from the AP MLD MAC address and the remaining (M-N) bits are from the SMD MAC address; or the first N bits of the M-bit address used for encryption / decryption are from the SMD MAC address and the remaining (M-N) bits are from the AP MLD MAC address. For example, the MPDU decryption procedure of the first RX architecture may be modified, where the peer MLD MAC address is replaced by a new address that is generating from combining a partial AP MLD MAC address and a partial SMD MAC address. For another example, the MPDU decryption procedure of the second RX architecture may be modified, where the AP MLD1 MAC address is replaced by one new address that is generating from combining a partial AP MLD1 MAC address and a partial SMD MAC address, and the AP MLD2 MAC address is replaced by another new address that is generating from combining a partial AP MLD2 MAC address and a partial SMD MAC address.

[0056] In a third alternative design, an address required by both of the AP-side MPDU encryption procedure and the STA-side MPDU decryption procedure may be set by performing a logic operation (e.g., a bitwise XOR operation) upon the SMD MAC address and the AP MLD MAC address. For example, the MPDU decryption procedure of the first RX architecture may be modified, where the peer MLD MAC address is replaced by a new address that is generating from XORing the AP MLD MAC address and the SMD MAC address. For another example, the MPDU decryption procedure of the second RX architecture may be modified, where the AP MLD1 MAC address is replaced by one new address that is generating from XORing the AP MLD1 MAC address and the SMD MAC address, and the AP MLD2 MAC address is replaced by another new address that is generating from XORing the AP MLD2 MAC address and the SMD MAC address.

[0057] As mentioned above, a single-layer address lookup procedure shown in FIG. 5 can be used for determining an SMD MAC address that is mapped to a link address (i.e., sender AP’s MAC address) . In some embodiments of the present invention, the single-layer address lookup procedure may be replaced by a multi-layer address lookup procedure such as a 2-layer address lookup procedure shown in FIG. 9. For example, the 2-layer address lookup procedure first determines an AP MLD MAC address that is mapped to the sender AP’s link address through a first address lookup procedure (denoted by “Address lookup 1” ) , and then determines an SMD MAC address that is mapped to the AP MLD MAC address found in the first address lookup procedure through a second address lookup procedure (denoted by “Address lookup 2” ) . The same objective of determining an SMD MAC address from a link address (i.e., sender AP’s MAC address) is achieved.

[0058] Compared to the single-layer address lookup procedure shown in FIG. 5, the 2-layer address lookup procedure shown in FIG. 9 can provide an additional MAC address (i.e., AP MLD MAC address) for the reordering buffer procedure. When the 2-layer address lookup procedure is used, the reordering buffer procedure may be modified to determine a reordering buffer index according to a TID, an SMD-level indication (e.g., SMD MAC address) , and an MLD-level indication (e.g., AP MLD MAC address) .

[0059] FIG. 10 is a diagram illustrating a first alternative reordering buffer procedure according to an embodiment of the present invention. The reordering buffer procedure of any of the second RX architecture and the fourth RX architecture may be replaced by the first alternative reordering buffer procedure shown in FIG. 10. In accordance with the first alternative reordering buffer procedure, a reordering buffer index for an MPDU is determined according to a TID of the MPDU, an SMD-level indication, and an MLD-level indication. In this embodiment, the SMD-level indication is an SMD MAC address of an SMD in which the MAP system 303 is formed, and the MLD-level indication is an AP MLD MAC address of the AP MLD 304_1 / 304_N. Hence, the control circuit 316 determines a reordering buffer index (i.e., a < <peer_MLD, SMD>, TID> tuple) for an MPDU that is received from one of the different links under parallel DL data transmission. It should be noted that <<AP MLD1 MAC address, SMD MAC address>, TID> and <<AP MLD2 MAC address, SMD MAC address>, TID> should point to the same re-ordering buffer.

[0060] FIG. 11 is a diagram illustrating a second alternative reordering buffer procedure according to an embodiment of the present invention. The reordering buffer procedure of any of the first RX architecture and the third RX architecture may be replaced by the second alternative reordering buffer procedure shown in FIG. 11. In accordance with the second alternative reordering buffer procedure, a reordering buffer index for an MPDU is determined according to a TID of the MPDU, an SMD-level indication, and an MLD-level indication. In this embodiment, the SMD-level indication is an SMD MAC address of an SMD in which the MAP system 303 is formed, and the MLD-level indication is an AP MLD MAC address of the AP MLD 304_1. Hence, the control circuit 316 determines a reordering buffer index (i.e., a < <peer_MLD, SMD>, TID> tuple) for an MPDU that is received from one of the different links under parallel DL data transmission. For example, <<AP MLD MAC address, SMD MAC address>, TID> points to a common re-ordering buffer.

[0061] In above embodiments, the SMD-level indication (which is required by the reordering buffer procedure and / or the MPDU decryption procedure of a selected RX architecture, and is also required by AP’s MPDU encryption procedure) is set by an SMD MAC address of an SMD. In some embodiments of the present invention, the SMD-level indication (which is required by the reordering buffer procedure and / or the MPDU decryption procedure of a selected RX architecture, and is also required by AP’s MPDU encryption procedure) may be derived from an SMD ID of an SMD. In a case where the length of the SMD ID is the same as that of the SMD MAC address, the SMD MAC address may be directly replaced by the SMD ID. In a case where the length of the SMD ID is shorter than that of the SMD MAC address, fixed content padding may be applied to the SMD ID, and the SMD MAC address may be replaced by the modified SMD ID (i.e., an SMD ID with bit padding) . In a case where the length of the SMD ID is longer than that of the SMD MAC address, some bits of the SMD ID may be cut, and the SMD MAC address may be replaced by the modified SMD ID (i.e., an SMD ID with bit pruning) .
