AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing plasticizers for polyamides, such as butyl-benzenesulfonamide, are derived from fossil resources and pose toxicity concerns, and ester-based plasticizers suffer from hydrolysis issues that degrade polyamide properties and cause coloration, necessitating the development of bio-based, non-toxic alternatives with improved compatibility and stability.

Method used

A biobased plasticizer comprising compounds of formula (I), such as linear or branched alkyl groups with hydroxyl or NH(CO)CH3 groups, or a 2-methylene-furane group, is introduced into polyamide compositions, enhancing flexibility and compatibility without the drawbacks of traditional plasticizers.

Benefits of technology

The biobased plasticizer effectively lowers the glass transition temperature of polyamides, offering improved mechanical properties and reduced toxicity, while maintaining compatibility and stability, outperforming traditional plasticizers like BBSA.

Description

[0001] Biobased plasticizer for polymer

[0002] Technical field

[0003] The present invention relates to biobased plasticizer for polyamide and to polyamide composition comprising such biobased plasticizer.

[0004] Background art

[0005] Polyamides are highly valuable polymers due to their unique properties, notably their high resistance to chemicals and solvents. They are largely used notably for molding and textile applications. Polyamides, in particular those with long aliphatic chains such as PA11, PA12, PA6.10, PAID.10, are also extruded into pipes, tubes, hoses and similar objects where higher flexibility is additionally required. Plasticizers may be added when even higher flexibility is needed.

[0006] Plasticizers such as lactames, esters, and sulfonamides are known as plasticizers for polyamides. However, esters are prone to hydrolyzation and the hydrolyzation products may degrade the properties of the polyamide resin. Furthermore, they can give rise to coloration.

[0007] The plasticizer most used today for polyamides is butyl-benzenesulfonamide (BBSA). This compound is derived from fossil resources and further suspected of being neurotoxic, and of having negative effects on breathing.

[0008] Plasticizer must be differentiate from solvents since before use solvents has to be totally removed because residual traces of solvents can deteriorate the obtained solid compound in a way that the required mechanical properties are not obtained. A plasticizer, unlike a solvent, should be compatible with the use of the material obtained with the composition comprising it (toxicity, surface condition, color, compatibility with other additives, resistance to high temperature (for example when the composition is used to prepare a material by extrusion at high temperature (for example 300°C)).

[0009] There is thus a need to provide alternative plasticizers for polyamide resins that are totally or partially bio-based and that present less or no toxicity. of the invention

[0097] Preparation of plasticized polymer samples

[0098] On a Haake rheometer equipment, 45 g of unmodified PA11 resin was mixed with the appropriate amount of plasticizer, 4, 8 and 12 wt % at 220°C at 20 rpm for 1 minute to obtain complete melting followed by 3 minutes at 60 rpm mixing speed for complete blending.

[0099] Results

[0100] Table 1 below summarizes the glass transition temperatures (Tg) of PA11 compositions comprising 0, 4, 8 or 12 wt% of compounds Cl to C5 as plasticizers, respectively and BBSA as a comparative example.

[0101] The Tg is measured according to ISO 11357 with a heating ramp of 20°C / min. Typically, the 2ndheating curve is used to determine the Tg.

[0102] Conditions for measuring Tg:

[0103] • Apparatus : DSC TA Q2000 with intracooler

[0104] • Standard : ISO 11357

[0105] • Programmation

[0106] • Equilibrium at -60°C

[0107] • Isothermal 5min

[0108] • 20°C / min at 240°C

[0109] • 20°C / min at -60°C

[0110] • Isothermal 5min

[0111] • 20°C / min at 240°C

[0112] [Table 1] Glass transition temperature of plasticized polyamide compositions

[0113] The results show that the compounds C1-C5 efficiently lower the glass transition temperature of the polyamide. Moreover, the Tg obtained by using the compounds C1-C5 is lower than the Tg obtained by using BBSA.

[0114] The compounds of formula (I) thus appear to be very interesting compounds for use as plasticizers in polyamide compositions.
