[0003] GASKET AND

[0004] METHOD FOR SEALING A WINDOW OPENING OF A RECREATIONAL VEHICLE

[0005] The present invention relates to a gasket and a method for sealing a window opening of a recreational vehicle. More particular, the present invention relates to a gasket, configured to be attached to a window opening of a recreational vehicle for sealing the window opening against a window of the recreational vehicle and a method using the gasket.

[0006] A recreational vehicle like a camper, a caravan, a mobile home or a horsetrailer, is usually provided with unframed windows. Such unframed windows consist of a windowpane made out of plastic or glass, which is tiltable attached to the recreational vehicle via a hinge member. By pressing the windowpane away from respectively towards an outer wall surface of the recreational vehicle, the window can be opened respectively closed. For opening and closing of the window and attaching the window to the recreational vehicle, a window opening is formed in the outer wall surface of the recreational vehicle.

[0007] When the unframed window is closed, the interior of the recreational vehicle, especially the persons accommodated therein, should be protected against humidity and / or dust from outside of the recreational vehicle. Hence, it is necessary to seal the window opening against the window in a closed state of the window. Currently, extruded rubber gasket profiles are used for sealing window openings of recreational vehicles against windows thereof. Particularly common are gaskets made out of extruded EPDM (Ethylen- Propylen-Dien-M class) rubber. These EPDM profiles are additionally sealed against the outer wall surface of the recreational vehicle using a butyl sealant.

[0008] However, such gasket profiles with an additional butyl sealant come with a multitude of technical disadvantages. For example, existing gasket profiles of EPDM are relatively heavy and dense, thus adding significant weight to the recreational vehicle. Further, it is difficult and time-consuming to apply the EPDM profile with the butyl sealant to the outer wall surface of the recreational vehicle due to the sticky and friction causing butyl. Usually, one has to press many times manually or using a rubber or wooden hammer. Moreover, neither EPDM nor butyl are recyclable. As such, when the EPDM gasket is changed, butyl residues remain, which can only be removed by using solvent-based cleaners. Additionally, it will likely happen that the butyl sealant will be squeezed out from the U-shaped EPDM profile. Thus, when the recreational vehicle has been exposed to weather, visible black strikes on the outer wall surface of the recreational vehicle are caused, as the butyl is partly washed out. Therefore, even after the EPDM profile and the butyl sealant are applied to the recreational vehicle, extensive rework is necessary to remove the excess butyl to prevent occurrence of the visible black stripes on the outer wall surface of the recreational vehicle. A further disadvantage of the current solution is that the butyl sealant needs to be stored dust free New PCT application Dometic Sweden AB 214804 PWO August 28, 2025

[0009] 2 / 14 during the production process and can be maximally stored up to one year. Otherwise, if the butyl is too dusty or stored too long, the butyl will not adhere to the wall surface of the recreational vehicle.

[0010] Therefore, it is the scope of the present invention to provide a lightweight sealing gasket and sealing method for a window opening of a recreational vehicle which is quicker and easier to process, environmentally-friendly and saves material as well as construction time.

[0011] This scope is achieved by the gasket according to claim 1 and the sealing method according to claim 10. Preferable modifications thereof are presented in the dependent claims.

[0012] According to a first aspect of the present invention, a gasket is provided. The gasket is configured to be attached to a window opening of a recreational vehicle for sealing the window opening against a window of the recreational vehicle. A window opening of a recreational vehicle like a camper, a caravan, a mobile home or a horse trailer, is an opening provided in a wall area and / or a roof area of the recreational vehicle. Via the window opening, fresh and / or cool air from outside of the recreational vehicle can be guided into the interior of the recreational vehicle. Additionally, dry and / or hot air from inside of the recreational vehicle can be guided outside of the recreational vehicle via the window opening. Moreover, via the window opening, persons accommodated inside the recreational vehicle can look respectively talk with persons outside the recreational vehicle. The window opening can be covered by a window, for example in the form of a windowpane made out of plastic or glass. The windowpane may be tiltable attached to the recreational vehicle via a hinge. By tilting the windowpane relatively to the recreational vehicle via the hinge, the window of the recreational vehicle can be opened respectively closed. The gasket may be arranged on the outer circumference of the window opening and may be configured to contact the windowpane when the window is closed. The gasket may be made of a sealing material which is impermeable to humidity and / or dust. Thus, when the window is closed, the windowpane contacts the gasket such that humidity and / or dust are prevented from entering the interior of the recreational vehicle.

[0013] The gasket comprises an attachment portion and a sealing portion. The attachment portion is configured to attach the gasket to the window opening. The sealing portion is configured to seal the window opening against the window of the recreational vehicle. An inner circumference of the attachment portion may be formed correspondingly to an outer circumference of the window portion of the recreational vehicle. The attachment portion may be provided with a fastening mechanism, e.g. a clamping or bolting mechanism, for fastening the gasket to the window opening. The attachment portion may be made of a sealing material which is impermeable to humidity and / or dust. The sealing portion may protrude from the attachment portion towards the windowpane such that the windowpane contacts the sealing portion when the window is closed. The sealing portion may be elastic, such that the windowpane can be pressed against the sealing portion without damaging the windowpane. The sealing portion may be made of a sealing material which is impermeable to humidity and / or dust. New PCT application Dometic Sweden AB 214804 PWO August 28, 2025

[0014] 3 / 14

[0015] According to the present invention, the attachment portion is provided with at least one sealing lip for sealing the attachment portion against the window opening. For example, the sealing lip may be triangular-shaped and may be highly mechanically deformable. The sealing lip forms a part of the gasket itself and hence no additional butyl sealant is necessary for sealing the attachment portion against the window opening. Thus, with the gasket according to the present invention, no additional butyl sealant is needed. Consequently, no overflow of excess butyl will happen. As in general butyl is non-recyclable, by omitting the usage of butyl through forming the gasket of a thermoplastic elastomer, the sustainability of the gasket is further increased. Finally, the gasket made of a thermoplastic elastomer will not cause any visible black streaks which have to be removed. Therefore, no rework is needed after attaching the gasket made of a thermoplastic elastomer to the window opening. Finally, the material for the gasket does not have to be stored under special storage conditions, therefore further simplifying the production process.

[0016] Preferably, the attachment portion and the sealing portion are made of at least one thermoplastic elastomer. A thermoplastic elastomer is a plastic material which has both thermoplastic as well as elastomeric properties. A thermoplastic material is a plastic material which is deformable in a specific temperature region. When the thermoplastic material is cooled down, the thermoplastic material will keep its deformed shape. The temperature-dependent deformation of thermoplastic materials is reversible. An elastomeric material is a plastic material which is deformable under tensile and / or compressive stress. The elastomeric material will return to its initial form when the tensile and / or compressive stress is released.

[0017] Depending on the specific material characteristics, a thermoplastic elastomer may thus be deformed temperature-dependent, stress-dependent and or both. As such, a thermoplastic elastomer is easily deformable and re-formable. Hence, attachment of the gasket made of a thermoplastic elastomer to the window opening of the recreational vehicle is significantly simplified. Moreover, a thermoplastic elastomer usually weighs less and has a lower material density compared to a rubber material like EPDM of comparable size. Thus, the gasket made of at least one thermoplastic elastomer adds fewer weight to the recreational vehicle as the sealing elements known so far. Additionally, a thermoplastic elastomer can be made from recycled material, for example recycled motor oil. Hence, the thermoplastic elastomer is recyclable itself, providing for an environmentally friendly gasket. Due to the high degree of deformation of a thermoplastic elastomer, the gasket made thereof can be formed such that no additional butyl sealant is needed.

[0018] Preferably, the attachment portion is made of a first thermoplastic elastomer and the sealing lip is made of a second thermoplastic elastomer. A material hardness of the first thermoplastic elastomer is greater than a material hardness of the second thermoplastic elastomer. A material hardness of the first and second thermoplastic elastomer may be measured in terms of Shore A hardness. For example, the Shore A New PCT application Dometic Sweden AB 214804 PWO August 28, 2025

[0019] 4 / 14 hardness of the first thermoplastic elastomer may be two times or three times or five times or 10 times higher than the Shore A hardness of the second thermoplastic elastomer. In other words, the sealing lip is softer than the attachment portion and thus easily elastically deformable. Hence, the soft sealing lip may precisely adjust to the outer circumference of the window opening when attaching the gasket thereto, providing for a thorough ceiling of the attachment portion against the window opening. On the other hand, the attachment portion, being more rigid than the sealing lip, provides for a firm attachment to the window opening without any displacements caused by deformation. Thus, attachment of the gasket to the window opening is improved, and at the same time sealing of the gasket relative to the window of the recreational vehicle is improved.

[0020] Preferably, the attachment portion is made of a first thermoplastic elastomer and the sealing portion is made of a second thermoplastic elastomer. A material hardness of the first thermoplastic elastomer is greater than a material hardness of the second thermoplastic elastomer. A material hardness of the first and second thermoplastic elastomer may be measured in terms of Shore A hardness. For example, the Shore A hardness of the first thermoplastic elastomer may be two times or three times or five times or 10 times higher than the Shore A hardness of the second thermoplastic elastomer. In other words, the sealing portion is softer than the attachment portion and thus easily elastically deformable. Hence, the soft sealing portion may precisely conform to the windowpane once the window is closed, providing for a thorough sealing of the window opening against the window of the recreational vehicle. On the other hand, the attachment portion, being more rigid than the sealing portion, provides for a firm attachment to the window opening without any displacements caused by deformation. Thus, attachment of the gasket to the window opening is improved, and at the same time sealing of the window portion against the window of the recreational vehicle is improved. For example, the sealing portion and the sealing lip may be made of the second thermoplastic elastomer. Thus, the sealing portion and the sealing lip may be unitarily formed as a one-piece member. The sealing lip may then be inserted into the attachment member via a through hole and the sealing portion may be arranged outside the attachment portion with respect to the window opening. Alternatively, the sealing portion and the sealing lip may be formed as separate members and may then be separately coupled to an inner respectively outer surface of the attachment member. Forming the sealing portion and the sealing lip from the second, i.e., the same, thermoplastic elastomer simplifies production of the gasket and saves production resources.

[0021] Preferably, the attachment portion, the sealing lip and the sealing portion are each made of a different thermoplastic elastomer. The thermoplastic elastomers of the attachment portion, the sealing lip and the sealing portion may for example differ in their respective material hardness, their respective material density and / ortheir respective material weight. Hence, each of the attachment portion, the sealing lip and the sealing portion may deform and re-form differently. Thus, the gasket is highly adjustable to specific production needs. New PCT application Dometic Sweden AB 214804 PWO August 28, 2025

[0022] 5 / 14

[0023] Preferably, the sealing portion is made of a foamed thermoplastic elastomer. A foamed thermoplastic elastomer is a thermoplastic elastomer produced by foaming. The foamed thermoplastic elastomer may have a closed cell structure. The closed cells of the thermoplastic elastomer may be filled with air or other gases. An exemplary foamed thermoplastic elastomer may be a thermoplastic styrol-block-copolymer (TPS). A foamed thermoplastic elastomer may be particularly lightweight and easily deformable. Hence, a sealing portion made of a foamed thermoplastic elastomer only adds slightly to the weight of the gasket and at the same time precisely conforms to the closed window.

[0024] Preferably, the sealing portion has a substantially ring-shaped cross section. That is, in a cross-sectional view along a longitudinal extension of the gasket, the sealing portion is circular-shaped and hollow on the inside. Hence, material can be saved when forming the sealing portion, while at the same time it is ensured that the sealing portion thoroughly contacts the windowpane when the window is closed.

[0025] Preferably, the attachment portion is at least partially filled with hollow glass bowls or hollow glass balls. The glass bowls or balls may have a relatively thin wall surface and are hollow inside. Thus, the glass bowls or balls are light-weight and hence the overall weight of the attachment portion made thereof is further reduced. As the hollow glass bowls or balls are surrounded by the thermoplastic elastomer, the attachment portion is also easily mechanically deformable.

[0026] Preferably, the attachment portion is provided with a fastening portion. The fastening portion is configured to receive a fastening member for fastening the gasket in the window opening. The fastening portion may be provided on an outer surface of the attachment member which is arranged opposite of a surface of the attachment member contacting the window opening. For example, the fastening portion may be a substantially flat outer surface of the attachment member. The attachment portion may exemplarily be provided with through-holes for receiving a fastening member such as a screw or bolt. In another example, the attachment portion may be a structurally enhanced part surface of the attachment member configured to receive brackets or clamps as a fastening member. After fastening the attachment member to the window opening using the fastening portion, the fastening portion may be covered with a lid, such that the fastening member is not visible from the outside.

[0027] According to a second aspect of the present invention, a method for sealing a window opening of a recreational vehicle against a window of the recreational vehicle using a gasket is provided. The gasket comprises an attachment portion and a sealing portion. The method comprises the steps of forming the attachment portion from at least one thermoplastic elastomer; providing the attachment portion with a sealing lip to seal the attachment portion against the window opening; attaching the gasket to the window opening by the attachment portion; and sealing the window opening against the window by the sealing portion. New PCT application Dometic Sweden AB 214804 PWO August 28, 2025

[0028] 6 / 14

[0029] The gasket used in the sealing method according to the second aspect may be configured according to the features described with respect to the first aspect of the present invention. Therefore, the same technical effects and advantages as described for the gasket of the first aspect may also be achieved with the sealing method according to the second aspect. In particular, using a gasket provided with a sealing enables a simplified attachment process of the gasket, saves construction time and material, is environmentally-friendly, avoids rework, and is visually pleasing.

[0030] Preferably, the method further comprises the steps of forming the sealing lip from a second thermoplastic elastomer having a material hardness lower than a material hardness of the thermoplastic elastomer of the attachment portion; and forming the sealing portion from a third thermoplastic elastomer. The sealing portion, the second thermoplastic elastomer, the third thermoplastic elastomer and the material hardness may likewise be configured according to the respective features described with reference to the first aspect of the present invention. In particular, using a sealing lip formed from a softer thermoplastic elastomer as described above omits the need of applying an additional butyl sealant between the attachment member and the window opening. Hence, no leakage of butyl happens, and the used gasket is recyclable.

[0031] Preferably, the method further comprises the steps of forming the sealing portion and the sealing lip from a foamed thermoplastic elastomer. The foamed thermoplastic elastomer is the second thermoplastic elastomer and / or the third thermoplastic elastomer. The formed thermoplastic elastomer may likewise be configured according to the foamed thermoplastic elastomer described with reference to the first aspect of the invention. Forming the sealing portion from a foamed thermoplastic elastomer provides for a lightweight and low-density sealing portion which can thus easily conform to the windowpane when the window is closed. Forming the sealing lip from a foamed thermoplastic elastomer provides for a lightweight and low-density sealing lip which can thus easily deform between the attachment member and the window opening for sealing the attachment member against the window opening.

[0032] The above and other features of the invention will become more apparent from the following detailed description of preferred, non-limiting exemplary embodiments of the present invention, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

[0033] Fig. 1 is a schematic perspective view of a cut-out section of a gasket for sealing a window opening against a window of a recreational vehicle according to one exemplary embodiment of the present invention;

[0034] Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the gasket of Fig. 1 attached to a window opening of the recreational vehicle; and New PCT application Dometic Sweden AB 214804 PWO August 28, 2025

[0035] 7 / 14

[0036] Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the gasket of Figs. 1 and 2 attached to a window opening for sealing the window opening against a window of the recreational vehicle.

[0037] With reference to Fig. 1 , a gasket 10 according to the present invention is shown. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the gasket 10 can be attached to a window opening 40 of a recreational vehicle, such as a mobile home, camper, caravan or horse trailer, for sealing the window opening 40 against a window 44 of the recreational vehicle. By using the gasket 10, dust and / or humidity can be prevented from entering an interior of the recreational vehicle when the window 44 is closed.

[0038] As shown in Fig. 1 , the gasket 10 comprises an attachment portion 20 and a sealing portion 30. The attachment portion 20 is configured to attach the gasket 10 to the window opening 40. The sealing portion 30 is configured to seal the window opening 40 against the window 44 of the recreational vehicle.

[0039] The attachment portion 20 is made of at least one thermoplastic elastomer. The thermoplastic elastomer is a plastic material which has both thermoplastic as well as elastomeric properties. Hence, the thermoplastic elastomer may thus be deformed temperature-dependent, stress-dependent and or both, depending on the specific characteristics of the plastic material. The thermoplastic elastomer is produced from recycled motor oil. As such, the thermoplastic elastomer is recyclable itself. In the shown embodiment, the thermoplastic elastomer of the attachment portion 20, is at least partly filled with hollow glass bowls or hollow glass balls. The thermoplastic elastomer filled with hollow glass bowls or balls of the attachment member 20 is thus flexible and light-weight at the same time and provides an overall better durability. Attachment of the gasket 10 made of the thermoplastic elastomer partly filled with hollow glass bowls or hollow glass balls to the window opening 40 of the recreational vehicle is thus simplified and environmentally friendly.

[0040] The sealing portion 30 is made of a second thermoplastic elastomer. The second thermoplastic elastomer of the sealing portion 30 has a lower material hardness than the first thermoplastic elastomer of the attachment portion 20. That is, a Shore A hardness of the second thermoplastic elastomer is lower than a Shore A hardness of the first thermoplastic elastomer. In the depicted embodiment, the second thermoplastic elastomer of the sealing portion 30 is a foamed thermoplastic elastomer, such as a thermoplastic styrol-block-copolymer (TPS). Thus, the second thermoplastic elastomer is lighter in mass and has a lower material density than the first thermoplastic elastomer of the attachment portion 20. By making the sealing portion 30 of the second thermoplastic elastomer, production costs and production time can be saved.

[0041] In a cross-sectional view along a longitudinal extension of the sealing portion 30, the sealing portion 30 has a substantially ring-shaped cross section. Therefore, the sealing portion 30 is hollow in the inside, providing for further saving of production material. New PCT application Dometic Sweden AB 214804 PWO August 28, 2025

[0042] 8 / 14

[0043] As shown in Fig. 1 , the attachment portion 20 is provided with a sealing lip 22. In the depicted embodiment, the sealing lip 22 consists of two triangular shaped sealing teeth stacked above each other. The sealing lip 22 is made of the second thermoplastic elastomer of the sealing portion 30, i.e., the foamed thermoplastic elastomer. In the shown embodiment, the sealing lip 22 and the sealing portion 30 are formed as a unitary member made of the same thermoplastic elastomer. The attachment member 20 is provided with a through hole into which the sealing lip 22 can be inserted. The sealing lip 22, being made of the foamed thermoplastic elastomer, can thus easily deform against the attachment member 20 when the attachment member 20 is attached to the window opening 40.

[0044] A sealing of the attachment member 20 against the window opening 40 using the sealing lip 22 will now be described with reference to Fig. 2. In Fig. 2, the gasket 10 is attached with the attachment member 20 onto a wall portion 42 of the recreational vehicle. The window opening 40 is formed by at least two of the wall portions 42 of the recreational vehicle, as shown in Fig. 3.

[0045] As shown in Fig. 2, the attachment member 20 made of the thermoplastic elastomer is elastically deformable to such a degree that it can firmly grip around the wall portion 42. Moreover, the sealing lip 22 formed from the second, i.e., the foamed thermoplastic elastomer, is softer than the thermoplastic elastomer of the attachment member 20. Thus, when the attachment member 20 grips around the wall portion 42, the sealing lip 22 deforms against the wall portion 42, thereby forming a sealing that prevents humidity and / or dust from entering between the wall portion 42 and the attachment member 20. Consequently, no additional butyl sealant is needed any more.

[0046] In summary, the attachment member 20 made of the first thermoplastic elastomer partly filled with hollow glass bowls or glass balls provides for a firm attachment of the gasket 10 to the window opening 40, while the sealing lip 22 made of the second, i.e., foamed thermoplastic elastomer, omits the application of an additional butyl sealant. Therefore, squeezing out of excess butyl, as well as the occurrence of visible black stripes, is prevented.

[0047] According to Fig. 2, the attachment member 20 is provided with a fastening portion 24. As shown, the fastening portion 24 is formed as a groove arranged on the top surface of the attachment member 20. The fastening portion 24 receives a fastening member 26, in the depicted embodiment a clamp 26. Via the clamp 26, the attachment member 20 can be additionally attached to the wall portion 42. Once the fastening member 26 is inserted into the fastening portion 24, the fastening portion 24 can be covered with a lid 28, such that the fastening member 26 is no longer visible. Further, the lid 28 additionally seals the attachment member 20 against humidity and / or dust. New PCT application

[0049] 9 / 14

[0050] A sealing of the window opening 40 against a window 44 of the recreational vehicle using the sealing portion 30 will now be described with reference to Fig. 3. In Fig. 3, the gasket 10 is attached with the attachment member 20 onto a wall portion 42 of the recreational vehicle. The window opening 40 is formed between two wall portions 42 of the recreational vehicle. In the depicted embodiment, the window opening 40 is covered by a windowpane 44. In other words, Fig. 3 depicts an embodiment where the window of the recreational vehicle is closed.

[0051] As shown in Fig. 3, when the window is closed, the windowpane 44 contacts the sealing portion 30 of the gasket 10. The sealing portion 30 is made of the second, i.e., foamed thermoplastic elastomer, and thus is easily deformable against the windowpane 44. Therefore, a firm sealing of the window opening 40 against the window 44 is provided by the sealing portion 30. Additionally, the sealing portion 30 made of the second thermoplastic elastomer is lightweight, resource saving, recyclable and easy to attach.

[0052] The above described configurations are preferred but provide merely exemplary embodiments of the present invention. Hence, the described configurations of the present invention do not limit the achieved scope of protection as defined by the appended set of claims. A skilled artisan will be able to imagine various modifications of the above described configurations without contravening the basic concept of the present invention and / or leaving the scope of protection as defined by the appended set of claims.
