Description

COUPLING STRUCTURE FOR DIELECTRIC FILTER AND FILTERTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The non-limiting and exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to the technical field of communication hardware, and specifically to a coupling structure for dielectric filter and filter comprising the coupling structure.BACKGROUND

[0002] This section introduces aspects that may facilitate a better understanding of the disclosure. Accordingly, the statements of this section are to be read in this light and are not to be understood as admissions about what is in the prior art or what is not in the prior art.

[0003] Base station (BS) is an important part of mobile communication system, and BS typically comprises baseband unit (BU) , radio unit (RU) and antenna. In traditional BS solution, remote radio unit (RRU) and antenna unit (AU) are two independent units separated from each other and are hung on the high constructions. Considering the installation / fixation / occupation, smaller volume and lighter weight are always an important evolution direction in BS design, including legacy BS, street macro, micro, small cell and advanced antenna systems (AAS) .

[0004] In recent years, with the development of mobile communication system, the demands for small size and high performance radio are growing rapidly. Current advance radio requires miniaturizing the whole unit size as much as possible. Therefore, the filter, as a part of the radio, is also required to have a small volume.

[0005] At present, there is a miniaturized filter that uses a body made of a solid dielectric material and a resonator that is formed by metalizing (for example, by plating silver) the surface of the body. Multiple resonators and coupling between the resonators form a filter.

[0006] Similar to a metal filter, the dielectric filter needs to use cross coupling to implement high selectivity of the filter. Capacitive coupling and inductive coupling are needed to achieve the high selectivity requirement on both upper side and lower side of the passband. By using capacitive coupling, a transmission zero is formed at the lower side of the passband. By using inductive coupling, a transmission zero is formed at the upper side of the passband.

[0007] At present, in a dielectric filter commonly used in the industry, a transmission zero of the dielectric filter usually can be easily implemented by inductive coupling. To implement capacitive coupling of the dielectric filter is very difficult, an additional structure such as a PCB or plating pattern, or deep blind hole needs to be used, which introduces defects such as low reliability, high cost, big volume, high insertion loss and high complexity.

[0008] There is a need to develop a capacitive coupling structure for dielectric filter, that can achieve high selectivity of the filter with low cost, low insertion loss, low manufacture complexity, small volume and high reliability.SUMMARY

[0009] This summary is provided to introduce a selection of concepts in a simplified form that are further described below in the detailed description. This summary is not intended to identify key features or essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended to be used to limit the scope of the claimed subject matter.

[0010] To overcome or mitigate at least one of the above mentioned problems or other problems or provide a useful solution, embodiments of the present disclosure propose a coupling structure for dielectric filter and a filter comprising the coupling structure.

[0011] In a first aspect of the disclosure, there is provided a coupling structure for dielectric filter. The filter comprises at least one dielectric block made of a dielectric material with metalized surfaces. The block comprises at least two frequency tuning structures and the coupling structure located between two of the at least two frequency tuning structures. The coupling structure comprises a blind hole, a through hole, a conducting structure connecting the blind hole and the through hole, and an isolation area surrounding the blind hole, the through hole and the conducting structure.

[0012] In an embodiment, the block is substantially in shape of a cuboid or a cube.

[0016] In an embodiment, the conducting structure is formed as a part of the metalized surface of the block, or a metalized part of a groove connecting the blind hole and the through hole.

[0017] In an embodiment, the isolation area is formed on a first surface of the block or a second surface of the block which is opposite to the first surface.

[0018] In an embodiment, the isolation area is formed on the bottom surface of the groove structure.

[0019] In an embodiment, the isolation area is not metalized.

[0020] In an embodiment, the isolation area is formed by removing a metalized surface of the block.

[0032] The embodiments of the present disclosure are described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. It should be understood that these embodiments are discussed only for the purpose of enabling those skilled persons in the art to better understand and thus implement the present disclosure, rather than suggesting any limitations on the scope of the present disclosure. Reference throughout this specification to features, advantages, or similar language does not imply that all of the features and advantages that may be realized with the present disclosure should be or are in any single embodiment of the disclosure. Rather, language referring to the features and advantages is understood to mean that a specific feature, advantage, or characteristic described in connection with an embodiment is included in at least one embodiment of the present disclosure. Furthermore, the described features, advantages, and characteristics of the disclosure may be combined in any suitable manner in one or more embodiments. One skilled in the relevant art will recognize that the disclosure may be practiced without one or more of the specific features or advantages of a particular embodiment. In other instances, additional features and advantages may be recognized in certain embodiments that may not be present in all embodiments of the disclosure.

[0033] References in the specification to “one embodiment, ” “an embodiment, ” “an example embodiment, ” and the like indicate that the embodiment described may include a particular feature, structure, or characteristic, but it is not necessary that every embodiment includes the particular feature, structure, or characteristic. Moreover, such phrases are not necessarily referring to the same embodiment. Further, when a particular feature, structure, or characteristic is described in connection with an embodiment, it is submitted that it is within the knowledge of one skilled in the art to affect such feature, structure, or characteristic in connection with other embodiments whether or not explicitly described.

[0034] It shall be understood that although the terms “first” and “second” etc. may be used herein to describe various elements, these elements should not be limited by these terms. These terms are only used to distinguish one element from another. For example, a first element could be termed a second element, and similarly, a second element could be termed a first element, without departing from the scope of example embodiments. As used herein, the term “and / or” includes any and all combinations of one or more of the associated listed terms.

[0035] The terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting of example embodiments. As used herein, the singular forms “a” , “an” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. It will be further understood that the terms “comprises” , “comprising” , “has” , “having” , “includes” and / or “including” , when used herein, specify the presence of stated  features, elements, and / or components etc., but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, elements, components and / or combinations thereof.

[0036] It is noted that the terms as used in this document are used only for ease of description and differentiation among nodes, devices or networks etc. With the development of the technology, other terms with the similar / same meanings may also be used.

[0037] In the following description and claims, unless defined otherwise, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skills in the art to which this disclosure belongs.

[0038] The filter in the BS needs both capacitive cross-coupling and inductive cross-coupling between resonating cavities to achieve desirable high selectivity. It’s not easy to achieve capacitive cross-coupling in dielectric filter, e.g., ceramic waveguide (CWG) filter.

[0039] One solution of capacitive coupling needs a deep blind hole to achieve capacitive cross-coupling. The narrower the bandwidth, the more blind holes are needed and the deeper the blind hole is. Since the gap between the blind hole at the ceramic top surface and ceramic bottom surface is limited, deep blind hole solution only suits for products with a wide bandwidth. It’s difficult to produce a small gap between the blind hole and ceramic bottom surface and the reliability issue raises concerns.

[0040] Another kind of solution for cross coupling of CWG, requires a pattern type or a printed circuit board (PCB) . The manufacturing complexity is high and insertion loss is high.

[0041] FIG. 1 shows a dielectric block with the coupling structure for dielectric filter according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0042] In FIG. 1, a dielectric block 1 made of a dielectric material (e.g., ceramic) is shown. The block 1 is metalized on its surfaces, e.g., by plating conducting metal, e.g., silver. The block 1 is substantially in shape of a cuboid or a cube. With the development of technology and according to requirement and / or application scenario, the shape of the block 1 can be other type.

[0043] In an embodiment, the block 1 comprises at least two frequency tuning structures 11 and 12. The frequency tuning structures are used for tuning working frequency of the filter.

[0044] In an embodiment, the frequency tuning structure is formed as a blind hole or a groove at a first surface of the block. In FIG. 1, the first surface is shown as the top surface of the block 1 and the two frequency tuning structures 11 and 12 are shown as blind holes, but the first surface and the frequency tuning structures are not limited to them.

[0045] In an embodiment, the blind holes 11 and 12 are dug from the first surface of the block 1 and the inner surfaces of the blind holes 11 and 12 are metalized.

[0046] In an embodiment, the block 1 also comprises a coupling structure (13, 14, 15, 16) for dielectric filter. The coupling structure is located between two (11, 12) of the at least two frequency tuning structures.

[0047] In an embodiment, the coupling structure comprises a blind hole 15, a through hole 13 disposed through the first surface and the second surface of the block 1, a conducting structure 14 connecting the blind hole 15 and the through hole 13, and an isolation area 16 surrounding the blind hole 15, the through hole 13 and the conducting structure 14. The inner surfaces of the blind hole 15 and the through hole 13 are also metalized.

[0048] As shown in FIG. 1, the coupling structure separates the blind hole 11 from the blind hole 12, so that one resonant cavity is formed around the blind hole 11, and another resonant cavity is formed around the blind hole 12. Therefore, two resonant cavities are formed around blind hole 11 and blind hole 12 respectively. The depth of the blind holes 11 and 12 can be adjusted to adjust the resonance frequencies of the resonant cavities around the blind holes.

[0049] In an embodiment, the coupling structure is formed at the first surface of the block 1 or at a second surface of the block 1 which is opposite to the first surface. In FIG. 1, the first surface is shown as the top surface of the block 1, and the second surface is shown as the bottom surface of the block. Those skilled in the art can understand that they are just for explanation purpose without any limitation to the embodiment. That is, the coupling structure can be formed at the same surface as the frequency tuning structures, or can be formed at the opposite surface to the surface where the frequency tuning structures are located. The blind hole 15 and the through hole 13 are formed on / at a same surface of the block 1.

[0050] In an embodiment, the conducting structure is formed as a part of the metalized surface of the block.

[0051] In an embodiment, the conducting structure is formed as a metalized part of a groove connecting the blind hole 15 and the through hole 13. That is, a groove for connecting the blind hole 15 and the through hole 13 is formed therebetween, and the groove has a metalized part that is conducting for electrically connecting the blind hole 15 and the through hole 13.

[0052] In an embodiment, the conducting structure 14 may connect the upper surface of the blind hole 15 and the upper surface of the through hole 13, on the first surface of the block 1. In another embodiment, the conducting structure 14 may connect the middle parts of the through hoe 13 and the blind hole 15, or the conducting structure 14 may connect the bottom part of the blind hole 15 and the middle part of the through hole 13.

[0053] In an embodiment, the isolation area 16 is an area surrounding the blind hole 15, the through hole 13 and the conducting structure 14. The isolation area 16 isolates the blind hole 15,  the through hole 13 and the conducting structure 14 from the rest part of the metalized part of the block 1. The isolation area 16 is not metalized.

[0054] In an embodiment, the isolation area 16 is formed by removing a metalized surface of the block 1.

[0055] The width or shape of the isolation area 16 is not limited, as long as it can perform the isolation function and prevent short-circuit.

[0056] In an embodiment, the isolation area 16 is formed on the first surface of the block 1 as the conducting structure is. In another embodiment, the isolation area 16 is formed on the second surface of the block which is opposite to the first surface as the conducting structure is.

[0057] In FIG. 1, the coupling structure comprises one blind hole 15 and one through hole 13. The present disclosure is not limited to it. The coupling structure may comprise more than one blind holes and / or more than one through holes, as long as they are all connected directly / indirectly by the conducting structure 14.

[0058] The cross-coupling between the two resonant cavities may be adjusted / configured / tuned with the depth of the blind hole 15, the position of the coupling structure with respect to the corresponding frequency tuning structures.

[0059] With the present disclosure, the coupling structure can be made together with the frequency tuning structures, so it is relatively simple to manufacture with low cost. Without the additional pattern type or PCB, the insertion loss is low and the volume is small. The depth of the blind hole 15 is smaller than the deep blind hole solution described above, so the reliability and robustness is high. From the frequency response curve of the capacitive coupling structure, high selectivity of the filter can be achieved.

[0060] FIG. 2 shows a dielectric block with the coupling structure for dielectric filter in a groove structure 27 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0061] The block 2, the frequency tuning structures 21 and 22, the coupling structure (23, 24, 25, 26) of FIG. 2 correspond to the block 1, the frequency tuning structures 11 and 12, the coupling structure (13, 14, 15, 16) of FIG. 1 respectively.

[0062] The difference between FIG. 1 and FIG. 2 is that there is a groove structure 27 at the first surface of the block 2 and the coupling structure (23, 24, 25, 26) are formed at the bottom surface of the groove structure 27.

[0063] In some manufacturing scenarios, the top surface (where the frequency tuning structures are located) of the block may be covered with a shielding film layer. The shielding film layer may short-circuit the through hole 13, the conducting structure 14, the blind hole 15 with the rest of the block 1, i.e., conducting (short-circuiting) the isolation area 16 of FIG. 1. One solution is to dispose the coupling structure and the frequency tuning structures at opposite surfaces of the block,  as mentioned above. Another solution is to add a groove structure 27 as in FIG. 2. The groove structure 27 located between the corresponding frequency tuning structures may separate the shielding film layer with the coupling structure so as to overcome the problem. Under such circumstance, the coupling structure (23, 24, 25, 26) are formed at the bottom surface of the groove structure 27.

[0064] The inner surfaces of the groove structure 27 may be metalized except the isolation area 26; OR the inner surfaces of the groove structure 27 may be not metalized except the through hole 23, the conducting structure 24, the blind hole 25; OR the through hole 23, the conducting structure 24, the blind hole 25 are metalized and the isolation area 26 is not metalized and the rest inner surfaces of the groove structure 27 are partially metalized.

[0065] FIG. 3 shows two dielectric blocks with the coupling structure for dielectric filter according to other embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0066] The left block of FIG. 3 and the right block of FIG. 3 correspond to block 1 in FIG. 1 and block 2 in FIG. 2 respectively.

[0067] The difference is that at the opposite surface (the second surface) to the surface (the first surface) where the coupling structure or the groove structure is formed, at least one blind hole 31 is formed as part of the coupling structure.

[0068] In the case that more cross-coupling is needed, in addition to the blind hole of the coupling structure, the coupling structure further comprises another blind hole 31, the blind hole and the other blind hole 31 are formed at opposite surfaces of the block. They can face each other, overlap each other, or partially overlap each other in projection direction.

[0069] The present disclosure also relates to a dielectric filter. The filter comprises at least one dielectric block made of a dielectric material with metalized surfaces, and the block comprises at least two frequency tuning structures and a coupling structure as mentioned above with reference to FIG. 1 to FIG. 3.

[0070] FIG. 4 shows a dielectric block with 4 cavities according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0071] In FIG. 4, in block 4, there are four blind holes 41, 42, 43 and 44 functioning as frequency tuning structure and two blind holes 45 and 46 functioning as input and output ports. There is a coupling structure 47 according to the present disclosure between blind holes 41 and 44, thus capacitive coupling is formed between cavities of blind holes 41 and 44. There is also a T-shape coupling structure 48 (through slot) between blind holes 41 and 42, between blind holes 42 and 43, between blind holes 43 and 44, thus inductive coupling is formed therebetween respectively.

[0072] The 4 poles filter of FIG. 4 can achieve only 40MHz bandwidth, by use of the capacitive coupling structure of the present disclosure to implement two transmission zeros.

[0073] According to actual requirements of capacitive coupling, the coupling structure 47 may replace part of the T-shape coupling structure 48, to bring in more capacitive coupling.

[0074] FIG. 5 shows the filter topology of the filter in FIG. 4 and FIG. 6 shows the frequency response curve of the filter in FIG. 4.

[0075] As can be seen from FIG. 5, one capacitive coupling and three inductive couplings are formed.

[0076] As can be seen from FIG. 6, two transmission zero points are formed, thus high out-band rejection and high selectivity are achieved. Four poles, i.e., four orders are implemented.

[0077] The present disclosure also relates to a communication device. The communication device comprises at least one dielectric filter as described above.

[0078] While this specification contains many specific implementation details, these should not be construed as limitations on the scope of any implementation or of what may be claimed, but rather as descriptions of features that may be specific to particular embodiments of particular implementations. Certain features that are described in this specification in the context of separate embodiments can also be implemented in combination in a single embodiment. Conversely, various features that are described in the context of a single embodiment can also be implemented in multiple embodiments separately or in any suitable sub-combination. Moreover, although features may be described above as acting in certain combinations and even initially claimed as such, one or more features from a claimed combination can in some cases be excised from the combination, and the claimed combination may be directed to a sub-combination or variation of a sub-combination.

[0079] It will be obvious to a person skilled in the art that, as the technology advances, the inventive concept can be implemented in various ways. The above described embodiments are given for describing rather than limiting the disclosure, and it is to be understood that modifications and variations may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the disclosure as those skilled in the art readily understand. Such modifications and variations are considered to be within the scope of the disclosure and the appended claims. The protection scope of the disclosure is defined by the accompanying claims.
