Abstract

Techniques pertaining to data allocation for joint data communication and sensing in mobile communications are described. An apparatus (e.g., a user equipment (UE) ) generates a plurality of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols carrying data. The apparatus then transmits the plurality of OFDM symbols to: (a) communicate the data; and (b) perform mono-static sensing based on the plurality of OFDM symbols. A constraint is applied to at least one OFDM symbol of the plurality of OFDM symbols.

Description

DATA ALLOCATION FOR JOINT COMMUNICATION AND SENSING IN MOBILE COMMUNICATIONSCROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED PATENT APPLICATION (S)

[0001] The present disclosure claims the priority benefit of U.S. Patent Application No. 63 / 723,172, filed 21 November 2024, the content of which herein being incorporated by reference in its entirety.TECHNICAL FIELD

[0002] The present disclosure is generally related to mobile communications and, more particularly, to data allocation for joint data communication and sensing in mobile communications.BACKGROUND

[0003] In wireless communications such as mobile communications under the current 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) specification, in a mono-statis sensing scenario a node transmits sensing signals and then receives reflected sensing signals as reflected by a particular target. Such a node may be a base station (BS) or a user equipment (UE) . A typical approach to mono-static sensing is for the node to transmit a well-designed pilot sequence or pattern for target detection. However, the sequence (or pattern) composed of known sequence (s) cannot carry data information for communication between a transmitting node and a receiving node. That is, the sequence used for sensing is overhead from the perspective of communication.

[0004] In some cases, the sensing signals may also be data-bearing signals instead of mere pilot signals. Accordingly, for mono-static sensing, the data-bearing signals are known by the transmitter and reused as sensing signals. A UE, as the transmitter, may transmit data-bearing signals (e.g., reference signal (RS) or physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) ) to a BS, as the receiver, and the UE measures the signals reflected by a target. Alternatively, a BS, as the transmitter, may transmit data-bearing signals (e.g., RS or physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) ) to a UE, as the receiver, and the BS measures the signals reflected by a target. In order to improve system performance, it would be beneficial to have some constraints on the data-bearing signals.

[0005] Therefore, there is a need for a solution of data allocation for joint data communication and sensing in mobile communications.SUMMARY

[0006] The following summary is illustrative only and is not intended to be limiting in any way. That is, the following summary is provided to introduce concepts, highlights, benefits, and advantages of the novel and non-obvious techniques described herein. Select implementations are further described below in the detailed description. Thus, the following summary is not intended to identify essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended for use in determining the scope of the claimed subject matter.

[0007] An objective of the present disclosure is to propose solutions or schemes that address the issue (s) described herein. More specifically, various schemes proposed in the present disclosure are believed to provide solutions pertaining to data allocation for joint data communication and sensing in mobile communications. It is believed that implementations of one or more of the schemes proposed herein may address or otherwise alleviate the issues described above.

[0008] In one aspect, a method may involve a UE generating a plurality of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols carrying data. The method may also involve the UE transmitting the plurality of OFDM symbols to: (a) communicate the data; and (b) perform mono-static sensing based on the plurality of OFDM symbols. A constraint may be applied to at least one OFDM symbol of the plurality of OFDM symbols.

[0009] In another aspect, a method may involve a BS transmitting a control signal associated with a data signal to a UE for performing joint data communication and mono-static sensing based on a plurality of OFDM symbols carrying the data signal. The method may also involve the BS receiving a report of a sensing result from the UE. The control signal may indicate that the data signal is generated according to modulated symbols on a plurality of allocated REs. The control signal may further indicate a constraint that is applied to the modulated symbols.

[0010] It is noteworthy that, although the description provided herein may be in the context of certain radio access technologies, networks, and network topologies such as 5th Generation (5G) New Radio (NR)  / Beyond Fifth-Generation (B5G)  / 6th Generation (6G) mobile communications, the proposed concepts, schemes and any variation (s)  / derivative (s) thereof may be implemented in, for and by other types of radio access technologies, networks and network topologies such as, for example and without limitation, 4th Generation (4G)  / Long-Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced, LTE-Advanced Pro, Internet-of-Things (IoT) , Narrow Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) , Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) , vehicle-to-everything (V2X) , and non-terrestrial network (NTN) communications. Thus, the scope of the present disclosure is not limited to the examples described herein.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

Overview

[0018] Implementations in accordance with the present disclosure relate to various techniques, methods, schemes and / or solutions pertaining to data allocation for joint data communication and sensing in mobile communications. According to the present disclosure, a number of possible solutions may be implemented separately or jointly. That is, although these possible solutions may be described below separately, two or more of these possible solutions may be implemented in one combination or another.

[0019] FIG. 1 illustrates an example network environment 100 in which various solutions and schemes in accordance with the present disclosure may be implemented. FIG. 2 ~ FIG. 5 illustrate examples of implementation of various proposed schemes in network environment 100 in accordance with the present disclosure. The following description of various proposed schemes is provided with reference to FIG. 1 ~ FIG. 5.

[0020] Referring to FIG. 1, network environment 100 involves a UE 110 in wireless communication with a wireless network 120 (e.g., a mobile network including an NTN and a TN) via a terrestrial network node 125 (e.g., an evolved Node-B (eNB) , a Next Generation Node-B (gNB) , or a transmission / reception point (TRP) ) and / or a non-terrestrial network node 128 (e.g., a satellite) . For example, the terrestrial network node 125 and / or the non-terrestrial network node 128 may form a non-terrestrial network (NTN) serving cell for wireless communication with the UE 110. In some implementations, the UE 110 may be an IoT device such as an NB-IoT UE or an enhanced machine-type communication (eMTC) UE (e.g., a bandwidth reduced low complexity (BL) UE or a coverage enhancement (CE) UE) . In such communication environment, the UE 110, the network 120, the terrestrial network node 125, and the non-terrestrial network node 128 may implement various schemes pertaining to data allocation for joint data communication and sensing in accordance with the present disclosure, as described below.

[0021] It is noteworthy that, while the various proposed schemes may be individually or separately described below, in actual implementations some or all of the proposed schemes may be utilized or otherwise implemented jointly. Of course, each of the proposed schemes may be utilized or otherwise implemented individually or separately. Moreover, as used herein, a lower layer may refer to a layer in the 5GMM protocol stack that is lower than the radio resource control (RRC) layer, such as a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer, a radio control link (RLC) layer, a medium access control (MAC) layer, and a physical (PHY) layer.

[0022] Under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure, data signals for joint data communication and sensing (e.g., serving the dual-purpose of sensing a target and conveying data) may be designed one or more constraints described below. Under the proposed scheme, modulated symbols carrying (e.g., encoded with) data bits may be modulated with a constant modulus (e.g., binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) , quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) , 8PSD, …or M-PSK with M being a non-negative integer) . Alternatively, or additionally, resource elements (Res) for modulated symbols carrying data may be equally spaced with a first gap = d1 in the frequency domain, with d1 being a non-negative integer. Alternatively, or additionally, REs for reference signals may be equally spaced with a second gap = d2 in the frequency domain, with d2 being a non-negative integer (which may be different than or equal to d1) . Alternatively, or additionally, the REs for modulated symbols and the REs for reference signals (e.g., demodulation reference signal (DMRS) ) may be non-overlapped with each other. Alternatively, or additionally, the REs for modulated symbols and the REs for reference signals may be spanned over an entirety or whole of a channel bandwidth.

[0023] Under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure, with respect to signaling for indication of resources allocated to data signals, following the constraints introduced above, a network (e.g., wireless network 120) may indicate resource allocation information to a UE (e.g., UE 110) for the UE’s data transmission. The resource allocation information, or control information, may include a number of parameters. Under the proposed scheme, within an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol, a set of interlaced data-carrying REs may be allocated contiguously with a constant gap (e.g., d1) between two adjacent REs in the frequency domain. Also, REs may be spanned over a whole signal channel bandwidth. Accordingly, the resource allocation information, or control information, may indicate: (a) a gap value between two adjacent REs, d, allocated for data transmission; and (b) an offset value relative to a reference position of candidate RE (s) (e.g., the RE corresponding to a subcarrier with a lowest subcarrier index) for data transmission. Along the time domain, the offset value for an ith OFDM symbol, offseti, may be defined according to a specific rule (e.g., offseti = i mod d) . Moreover, an OFDM symbol may comprise one or multiple proposed signals with interlaced RE allocation that may be orthogonal in the frequency domain by properly designed gap values and offset values (e.g., with the same d but different offset values) .

[0024] FIG. 2 illustrates an example scenario 200 under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure. Scenario 200 may pertain to a proposed signal pattern, which may be an interlaced pattern. In scenario 200, as shown in FIG. 2, d = 12. That is, there may be a gap value or difference of 12 in index numbers between two adjacent data-carrying REs along the frequency domain (for a given time domain OFDM symbol index) . As for the offset, offset1 = 1 for the first OFDM symbol, offset2 = 2 for the second OFDM symbol, and so on. In actual implementations, in some cases, the offset value may change from one OFDM symbol to another adjacent OFDM symbol; and in other cases, the offset value may remain the same from one OFDM symbol to another adjacent OFDM symbol. Moreover, in some cases, a same gap value may be applied to each OFDM symbol; and in other cases, different gap values may be applied to different OFDM symbols.

[0025] In view of the above, one of ordinary skill in the art may appreciate the benefits provided by the proposed schemes. For instance, in a UE-side mono-static sensing scenario, because the REs forming OFDM symbols are allocated with equal spacing, the transmitted data signal may have the following properties: (a) for each OFDM symbol, there may be d1 repetitions within an OFDM symbol duration; and (b) as an auto-correlation (AC) property, periodic AC of the OFDM symbol in the time domain may be zero for delay less than N / d1, with N being the length of the OFDM symbol. As a cross-correlation (CC) property, for other data-bearing OFDM symbols transmitted by other UE (s) , in case the allocated REs for the UE and the allocated REs for the other UE (s) do not overlap, periodic CC of the OFDM symbols among these UEs for all delays in the time domain may be zero. Thus, by implementing one or more of the proposed schemes, correlation-based mono-static sensing on the UE side may be robust without suffering interference from other co-channel UE (s) . Feature Highlight

[0026] In short, the proposed designs of data allocation for joint data communication and sensing may be implemented in various ways. For illustrative purposes and without limiting the scope of the present disclosure, a few example implementations of the proposed schemes are described below.

[0027] In one aspect, with respect to UE-side mono-static sensing, a UE (e.g., UE 110) may receive (e.g., from wireless network 120) or be pre-configured with control information that indicates RE allocations for OFDM symbols carrying data. For at least one of the OFDM symbols, the information may indicate at least one interlaced pattern with the following parameters: (a) the value of a gap between two adjacent REs; and (b) the value of an offset relative to a reference position of candidate REs. There may be some constraint on modulation symbols on each of the allocated REs. For instance, the modulation symbols may be M-PSK, with M being an integer greater than or equal to 2 (e.g., 2, 4, 8, …16, …, or 2K and K ≥ 1) . The UE may perform mono-static sensing based on the OFDM symbols. Moreover, the UE may report sensing results based on measurement of the OFDM symbols, which may be reflected by a target. Notably, this design (for RE allocation pattern and modulation symbols) may be applied to constrain reference signal (s) for UE’s transmission. In performing mono-static sensing, the UE may transmit data-bearing signals (e.g., RS and / or PUSCH) to a BS, and the UE may measure signals reflected by a target.

[0028] In another aspect, with respect to BS-side mono-statis sensing, a BS (e.g., terrestrial network node 125) may transmit a control signal and a data signal to a UE (e.g., UE 110) . The control signal may indicate that the data signal is generated according to modulated symbols on allocated REs, and the modulated symbols may follow constraints indicated by the control signal. The constraints may include M phase-shift keying (M-PSK) modulation. For at least one of the OFDM symbols, the control signal indicating RE allocation for carrying the data signal may following at least one interlaced pattern with the following parameters: (a) the value of a gap between two adjacent REs; and (b) the value of an offset relative to a reference position of candidate REs. Notably, this design (for RE allocation pattern and modulation symbols) may be applied to constrain reference signal (s) for BS’s transmission. In performing mono-static sensing, the BS may transmit data-bearing signals (e.g., RS and / or PDSCH) to a UE, and the BS may measure signals reflected by a target. The same constraint (s) under the proposed schemes may be applied to uplink (UL) data signals (e.g., PUSCH) as well as downlink (DL) data signals (e.g., PDSCH) , and the corresponding control signal may still be transmitted from the BS to the UE (even though the sensing is performed at the BS side in a BS-side mono-static sensing scenario) , in contrast to UL signal transmitted by the UE for UE-side mono-static sensing. Illustrative Implementations

Additional Notes

[0051] The herein-described subject matter sometimes illustrates different components contained within, or connected with, different other components. It is to be understood that such depicted architectures are merely examples, and that in fact many other architectures can be implemented which achieve the same functionality. In a conceptual sense, any arrangement of components to achieve the same functionality is effectively "associated" such that the desired functionality is achieved. Hence, any two components herein combined to achieve a particular functionality can be seen as "associated with" each other such that the desired functionality is achieved, irrespective of architectures or intermedial components. Likewise, any two components so associated can also be viewed as being "operably connected" , or "operably coupled" , to each other to achieve the desired functionality, and any two components capable of being so associated can also be viewed as being "operably couplable" , to each other to achieve the desired functionality. Specific examples of operably couplable include but are not limited to physically mateable and / or physically interacting components and / or wirelessly interactable and / or wirelessly interacting components and / or logically interacting and / or logically interactable components.

[0052] Further, with respect to the use of substantially any plural and / or singular terms herein, those having skill in the art can translate from the plural to the singular and / or from the singular to the plural as is appropriate to the context and / or application. The various singular / plural permutations may be expressly set forth herein for sake of clarity.

[0053] Moreover, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that, in general, terms used herein, and especially in the appended claims, e.g., bodies of the appended claims, are generally intended as “open” terms, e.g., the term “including” should be interpreted as “including but not limited to, ” the term “having” should be interpreted as “having at least, ” the term “includes” should be interpreted as “includes but is not limited to, ” etc. It will be further understood by those within the art that if a specific number of an introduced claim recitation is intended, such an intent will be explicitly recited in the claim, and in the absence of such recitation no such intent is present. For example, as an aid to understanding, the following appended claims may contain usage of the introductory phrases "at least one" and "one or more" to introduce claim recitations. However, the use of such phrases should not be construed to imply that the introduction of a claim recitation by the indefinite articles "a" or "an" limits any particular claim containing such introduced claim recitation to implementations containing only one such recitation, even when the same claim includes the introductory phrases "one or more" or "at least one" and indefinite articles such as "a" or "an, " e.g., “a” and / or “an” should be interpreted to mean “at least one” or “one or more; ” the same holds true for the use of definite articles used to introduce claim recitations. In addition, even if a specific number of an introduced claim recitation is explicitly recited, those skilled in the art will recognize that such recitation should be interpreted to mean at least the recited number, e.g., the bare recitation of "two recitations, " without other modifiers, means at least two recitations, or two or more recitations. Furthermore, in those instances where a convention analogous to “at least one of A, B, and C, etc. ” is used, in general such a construction is intended in the sense one having skill in the art would understand the convention, e.g., “a system having at least one of A, B, and C” would include but not be limited to systems that have A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, and / or A, B, and C together, etc. In those instances where a convention analogous to “at least one of A, B, or C, etc. ” is used, in general such a construction is intended in the sense one having skill in the art would understand the convention, e.g., “a system having at least one of A, B, or C” would include but not be limited to systems that have A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, and / or A, B, and C together, etc. It will be further understood by those within the art that virtually any disjunctive word and / or phrase presenting two or more alternative terms, whether in the description, claims, or drawings, should be understood to contemplate the possibilities of including one of the terms, either of the terms, or both terms. For example, the phrase “A or B” will be understood to include the possibilities of “A” or “B” or “A and B. ”

[0054] From the foregoing, it will be appreciated that various implementations of the present disclosure have been described herein for purposes of illustration, and that various modifications may be made without departing from the scope and spirit of the present disclosure. Accordingly, the various implementations disclosed herein are not intended to be limiting, with the true scope and spirit being indicated by the following claims.
