Abstract

An apparatus and method for adaptively calibrating a splicer are described. ADAPTIVE HOLLOW CORE FIBER SPLICING CALIBRATIONBACKGROUND

[0001] Splicing is typically used to join optical fibers, and there are various splicing methods that may be used, including fusion splicing and mechanical splicing. Prior to splicing, an optical fiber is cleaved. Splicing involves aligning the fibers end-to-end and fixing them in the aligned position. Fusion splicing, for example, joins the fibers by heating the end region in order to soften the glass from which the fibers are made. By pressing the ends together, the softened glass is made to fuse so that the fibers are permanently connected when the glass cools and hardens. Mechanical splicing, in contrast, does not permanently j oin the fibers together but instead uses a mechanical arrangement to maintain their aligned position and hold the fiber ends together. The join formed by splicing two fibers together is referred to as a splice. The quality of the splice is an important factor in enabling low loss optical propagation for light travelling from one fiber to the other.

[0008] Hollow-core fibers (HCFs) are a type of microstructured optical fiber that guides light through a central hollow core, surrounded by a cladding. FIGS. 1-3 show cross-sectional views of exemplary HCF structures 100, 200, 300. Light is guided in these HCFs by an antiresonant optical effect and so these fibers may be referred to as antiresonant fibers (ARFs). Each of the fibers 100, 200, 300 comprises a tubular outer cladding (or jacket) 102, a structured, inner, cladding (referred to herein as the microstructure) comprising a plurality of tubular cladding capillaries 104, 204, 304 and a hollow core 106. The outer cladding 102 has a glass thickness that is typically much larger than that of the cladding capillaries 104, 204, 304 and in many examples is much thicker than shown in the diagrams.

[0009] In the first example, shown in FIG. 1 , the structured, inner, cladding comprises five capillaries 104 of the same cross-sectional size and shape, which are arranged inside the outer cladding 102 in a single ring so that the longitudinal axes of each cladding capillary 104 and of the outer cladding 102 are substantially parallel. Each cladding capillary 104 is in contact with (e g. bonded to) the inner surface of the outer cladding 102 at an azimuthal location 108, such that the cladding capillaries 104 are usually evenly spaced around the inner circumference of the outer cladding 102, and are also spaced apart from each other by gaps 110 (i.e. such that there is no contact between neighbouring capillaries). In some designs of HCF, the cladding capillaries 104 may be positioned in contact with each other (in other words, not spaced apart as in FIG. 1), but spacing to eliminate this contact improves the fiber’s optical performance. The gaps 110 remove nodes that arise at the contact points between adjacent capillaries and which tend to cause undesirable spectral resonances that result in high transmission losses. Accordingly, fibers with spaced-apart cladding capillaries may be referred to as "nodeless antiresonant hollow core fibers”. It should be appreciated that other structures of HCF do not provide an antiresonant effect or provide a different antiresonant effect.

[0010] The arrangement of the cladding capillaries 104 in a ring around the inside of the tubular outer cladding 102 creates a central space, cavity, or void within the fiber, also with its longitudinal axis parallel to those of the outer cladding 102 and the cladding capillaries 104, which is the fiber’s hollow core 106. The hollow^ core 106 is bounded by the inwardly facing parts of the outer surfaces of the cladding capillaries 104. This is the core boundary, and the material (glass or polymer, for example) of the capillary walls that make up this boundary contributes to theantiresonance optical guidance effect or mechanism. The antiresonance optical guidance effect is provided by reflections of light in the hollow core by the core boundary, and further reflections of light in the capillary wall by a capillary boundary between a wall of the capillary and an interior space, cavity or void encompassed by the capillary. The cladding capillaries 104 have a thickness, t. at the core boundary which defines the wavelengths for which antiresonant optical guiding occurs in the HCF.

[0011] In the second example, shown in FIG. 2, each primary cladding capillary 104 has a secondary', smaller capillary 204 nested inside it, bonded to the inner surface of the primary' cladding capillary 104. in this example, but not necessarily, at the same azimuthal location 108 as the point of bonding between the primary' cladding capillary 104 and the outer cladding 102. These additional smaller capillaries 204 can reduce the optical loss. HCF designs of this ty pe, with secondary' capillaries, may be referred to as “nested antiresonant nodeless fibers” (NANFs), which are a type of ARF.

[0012] The third example, shown in FIG. 3, has two smaller cladding capillaries 204, 304 nested inside each cladding capillary 104. As with the example shown in FIG. 2, each of the smaller capillaries 204, 304 is bonded to the inner surface of the immediately larger capillary' at an azimuthal location that is in some cases the point of bonding between the primary cladding capillary 104 and the outer cladding 102. In this example, the smaller capillary 204 may be referred to as the secondary cladding capillary' and the smallest capillary’ 304 may be referred to as the tertiary’ cladding capillary. The tertiary' cladding capillary 304 is bonded to the inner surface of the secondary' cladding capillary 204 and the secondary cladding capillary’ 204 is bonded to the inner surface of the primary’ cladding capillary 104. HCF designs of this type, with secondary and tertiary cladding capillaries may be referred to as “double-nested antiresonant nodeless fibers” (DNANFs) and are a type of ARF. In yet further examples (not shown in the drawings) there may be a different configuration of cladding capillaries. For example, there may be smaller further capillaries, within the tertiary capillary 304 to provide further levels of nesting and / or there may be a plurality of secondary cladding capillaries within each primary cladding capillary, each secondary cladding capillary' being bonded to the inner surface of the primary cladding capillary at a different azimuthal location and / or each primary' cladding capillary' may have an internal structure (e.g. one or more dividing walls).

[0013] All of the examples shown in FIGS. 1-3 comprise five primary cladding capillaries 104 and hence have five-fold rotational symmetry. Furthermore, all the cladding capillaries are circular in cross-section. In other examples, there may be a different number of primary cladding capillaries surrounding the core (e.g. four, six, seven, eight, nine or ten) and / or the cladding capillaries may not be of circular cross-section. Additionally, whilst in the examples of FIGS. 1-3, all the primary cladding capillaries 104 are of the same size and shape, in other examples, the primary cladding capillaries within the outer cladding 102 may not all be the same size and / or shape. As defined herein, reference to a HCF is in some cases reference to a HCF comprising a capillary and a hollow core, such as an ARF.

[0014] The internal microstructure of a HCF. such as shown in FIGs. 1-3, increases the complexify of splicing operations compared to solid core fibers. Any misalignment of the microstructure at the splice produces a structural discontinuity and this increases the optical loss of light propagating down the HCF and across the splice.

[0015] FIG. 4 illustrates a schematic view of an example fusion splicer (i.e. a fusion splicing apparatus). To perform a splice, an end of a first length of HCF 402A and an end of a second length of HCF 402B are inserted into the splicer 400 and secured in position using clamps or other securing mechanism 410A, 410B. The ends of the HCF may have been prepared by cleaving or other means of forming a flat face which is perpendicular to the long axis of the respective length of HCF. At least one of the two fibers are mounted on a movable stage so that the two fibers can be moved relative to each other (e.g. to align the fibers and to bring the two ends into contact). The splicer adjusts the relative position of the ends of the two HCFs 402 A, 402B prior to splicing to align the ends laterally and may also perform rotational alignment. This adjustment may be performed automatically using a vision system 405 comprising a camera 406 and image analysis system 408 which controls the movable stage(s), or alternatively the adjustment may be performed manually by a user whilst viewing images of the two ends captured by the vision system 405. The camera assembly 406 is arranged to image a side-view of the HCFs 402A, 402B and / or of a produced HCF after splicing. Whilst not shown in FIG. 4, the vision system 405 may comprise light sources positioned to illuminate the fiber ends to improve the qualify of the images captured by the camera 406. Whilst FIG. 4 shows a single camera 406, a splicer may comprise more than one camera.

[0016] The splicer 400 further comprises a heating element with components 404A, 404B. These are illustrated as components of a fusion splicer, though it should be appreciated that in various examples other types of splicer are used.

[0017] To splice the two ends together, the splicer 400 brings the two fiber ends close together (e.g. into contact) and causes a temporary heat-zone to occur at the contact position between the two fibers and this causes melting and joining of the HCFs. This temporary heat-zone may be created using a plasma arc between two electrodes 404A, 404B positioned either side of the fiber ends. Once the temporary heat-zone ends, the HCFs cool, leaving a spliced longer length HCF comprising the two original lengths of HCF 402A, 402B joined by a splice.

[0018] There are many parameters which are pre-defined within the splicer 400 andcontrol the splicing operation. These parameters include the arc power, the arc duration, the gap between the two ends of the fiber prior to splicing (such as the position of the gap relative to a temporary heat-zone to be produced by the splicer during splicing, for example being adjustable to centralize, relative to the gap, damage caused by the heat-zone), the gap between the two ends of the fiber when splicing (which may be zero), the fiber movement speed, distance and / or force (e.g. when bringing the two fiber ends into contact with each other), an arc power of a pre-fuse stage performed by a fusion splicer, an arc power of a post-fuse stage performed by a fusion splicer, etc.

[0019] If the temporary heat-zone is too hot it can cause the microstructure within the component HCFs 402A, 402B to deform during the splicing operation. If the temporary heat-zone is too cool, the glass cladding of the HCFs 402A, 402B does not properly melt and the end-faces of the HCFs 402A, 402B facing each other simply slide against each other without properly joining. The heat-zone temperature is dependent upon the arc power and the arc duration and may be dependent upon other factors.

[0020] Consequently, both the parameters of the splicer 400 and the relative alignment of the internal microstructure of the two lengths of HCF affect the quality' of a resulting splice after splicing, both in terms of the mechanical integrity' of the splice and the optical propagation loss across the splice. A higher quality splice is associated with a lower optical propagation loss across the splice during operation (i.e. when light is directed through the HCF). A higher quality splice (i.e. a splice over which there is a lower optical propagation loss than an alternative splice) is associated with a proper join between lengths of HCF without damage to and misalignment of the microstructure within the resulting HCF after splicing, as will be elaborated upon below with respect to FIG. 5. As defined herein, a loss of or across a splice refers to an optical propagation loss of the splice.

Rotational misalignment occurs when the rotational orientation of the nested tubes of the microstructure in one fiber does not match the orientation in the other fiber. If the core of a first HCF is shifted horizontally and / or vertically relative to the core of a second HCF. when viewed from an axial perspective, the alignment of the nested tubes would be off- center, resulting in higher splice loss.

[0024] Tilt misalignment occurs when two spliced fibers are angled relative to each other instead of being perfectly parallel. This results in the nested tubes in one fiber being tilted compared to the corresponding tubes in the other fiber, leading to imperfect alignment.

[0025] Misalignment of any kind disrupts the optimal pathway for light transmission through the fiber cores and nested tubes of the microstructure of a HCF, significantly increasing splice loss. Proper alignment is important to ensure minimal splice loss.

[0026] FIG. 5A shows microstructure of a HCF post-splice across a relatively low loss splice indicated by near-optimal microstructure alignment and minimal defects. The view shown provides a horizontal cross-section of the splice, revealing that the microstructure (the dotted, filled structures) between the two portions of the HCF on either side of the splice are well-aligned, showing few visible defects or misalignment. This demonstrates the minimal splice loss in this particular splice.

Additionally, a brightness (for example being a pixel intensity- or average pixel intensity-) of aportion of one or both of the fibers being spliced within the temporary heat-zone and depicted in a captured image by the camera 406, is compared to the reference brightness. The magnitude of a difference between the reference brightness and the brightness compared to the reference brightness indicates a magnitude of a deviation from an optimal splice. Additionally, whether the difference is positive or negative can indicate a calibration to be made to affect the heat-zone. For example, if the brightness is higher than the reference brightness, wherein a higher brightness is configured to indicate a hotter region, this indicates that the temporary heat-zone is too hot, and if the brightness is lower than the reference brightness, this indicates that the temporary heat-zone is too cold. A higher brightness may be configured to indicate a hotter region than a brightness of a cooler region by a captured image being an optical image, though it should be appreciated that in some cases a lower brightness can be configured to represent a hotter region through for example digitally inverting the optical image. In either case, comparing the brightness to the reference brightness may be used to indicate a deviation of the temperature of the temporary heatzone from an optimal temperature.

[0031] It should be appreciated that brightness as referred to herein is in some cases an indication of brightness. An adjustment is then made, based on the brightness, to a parameter of the splicer 400, for example being an adjustment to a baseline arc power and / or duration. Mode-field mismatch refers to the difference in the spatial electromagnetic field distributions and propagation constants of light modes between the two cores of the respective lengths of HCF being spliced. This mismatch can lead to inefficiencies in light transmission, resulting in increased optical loss across a splice.

[0033] Described herein is an adaptive calibration method for fusion splicing hollow-core fiber which may be used in combination with, or instead of, the calibration method described above. Using the adaptive calibration method, a splice, for example each splice of a plurality of splices, that is performed can be assessed and where necessary the parameters of the splicer adjusted (e.g. by adjusting the baseline settings of the splicer or the parameters defined relative to those baseline settings) before a next splice is performed. This enables the process to react togradual changes in environmental conditions over a period of time (e.g. temperature or humidity fluctuations over a day in the field) and / or changes in hardware conditions over a period of time (e.g. splicer component degradation such as electrode or mechanical component wear), and improves the overall quality and consistency of the splices formed using a splicing apparatus. The adaptive calibration method does not require use of test fibers (either solid core fiber or HCF). or optical measurements of the spliced fibers and so does not impact the throughput of the splicer and in fact can increase the throughput as the improved consistency reduces the number of splices that fail (e.g. in terms of physical or optical performance criteria) and hence need to be redone. This adaptive calibration method may be particularly advantageous when splicing in the field, as large numbers of splices need to be performed in succession and the environment is not well controlled (unlike in a laboratory).

[0034] FIG. 6A illustrates a schematic diagram of an input to and output from an analy sis system which implements the adaptive calibration method, and FIG. 6B illustrates a flow diagram of an example of the adaptive calibration method.

More generally, the analysis system 602 provides a way of adjusting a parameter of a splicer based on an image of (i.e. showing) HCF microstructure at or proximate to a splice.

In various examples, the portion of the HCF is microstructure of the HCF or is outer cladding (e.g. outer cladding 102 of FIG. 1) of the HCF.

[0037] The analysis system 602 comprises a model 604, such as a machine learning model, a rule, and / or a lookup table, which is used to map a feature associated with the input image to an adjustment to a splicer parameter 606. The feature is detected by the analysis system 602 by performing a comparative analysis. The comparative analysis comprises comparing the input image 600, or a portion thereof, to a reference image which may be generated by or stored in the analysis system 602. Additionally or alternatively, the comparative analysis comprises comparing the input image 600, or a portion thereof, to a reference value or values, for example of an array, which may be generated by or stored in the analysis system 602. The reference value or values in some cases indicate a feature of the reference image, for example being a feature representing a property of microstructure shown in the reference image. The reference value or values may therefore be derived from the reference image. Additionally, the analysis system 602 comprises a processor and a memory' storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform the adaptive calibration method described herein, as shown in FIG. 15 and described below.

CLAIMS1. An apparatus comprising: a processor; and a memory storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, perform a method for adaptively calibrating a splicer, the method comprising: receiving a first image of a portion of a hollow core fiber (610, 1302), the hollow core fiber comprising a splice produced by the splicer, wherein the portion of the hollow core fiber in the first image is proximate to the splice; analysing the first image to detect a feature associated with the first image (612, 1304), the feature representing a property of the portion of the hollow core fiber proximate to the splice; using the feature, computing an adjustment to be made to a parameter of the splicer (614, 1314), wherein the adjustment is computed so as to target one or more of:1) a reduced optical propagation loss of a subsequent splice of hollow core fiber which is produced by the splicer after initiating the adjustment, and2) a higher strength of a subsequent splice of hollow core fiber which is produced by the splicer after initiating the adjustment; and initiating the adjustment of the parameter of the splicer (618, 1318).

2. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein analysing the first image to detect a feature associated with the image, the feature representing a property of the portion of the hollow core fibre, comprises: comparing the first image to one of: a reference image, a value derived from the reference image.

3. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the reference image is an image of a corresponding portion of the hollow core fibre to the portion of the hollow core fiber shown in the first image, and wherein the reference image is captured prior to the splice being produced by the splicer.

4. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the reference image and the first image are different portions of an input image showing the portion of the hollow core fiber, wherein the reference image shows a corresponding portion of the hollow core fibre that is further from the splice than the portion of the hollow core fibre in the first image.

The apparatus of any of claims 2-4, wherein comparing the first image to a reference image comprises: computing a difference image from the first image and the reference image; anddetecting the feature associated with the image, the feature representing a property of the portion of the hollow core fibre, from the difference image.

The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the difference image is computed by aligning the portion of the hollow core fibre of the first image with the corresponding portion of the hollow core fibre of the reference image and computing a pixel intensity difference between a pixel of the first image and a corresponding pixel of the reference image.

The apparatus of claim 5 or 6, wherein the feature comprises one or more of: a number or percentage of pixels in the difference image with a pixel intensity difference that is below a pixel intensity threshold; a number or percentage of pixels in the difference image with a pixel intensity difference that is above a pixel intensity threshold; and a plot of pixel intensities in the difference image against distance from the splice.

The apparatus of any preceding claim, wherein the adjustment to be made to the parameter of the splicer is computed by mapping the feature to the adjustment using a model, wherein the model comprises one or more of: a trained machine-learning model, the machine learning model trained to perform the mapping using training data comprising detected features, one or more of: loss data and strength data, and splice parameters for a plurality of splices performed by the splicer: a rule; and a lookup table.

The apparatus of any preceding claim, wherein the adjustment comprises an adjustment to one or more of: a baseline arc power of the splicer, an arc power defined relative to the baseline arc power, an arc duration, a gap between fibers in the splicer on splicing, a gap between fibers in the splicer prior to splicing, a fiber movement distance, a fiber movement force, and a fiber movement speed of the splicer.

10. The apparatus of any preceding claim, further comprising determining whether the computed adjustment is within a pre-defined range (1216) and triggering a full calibration sequence of the splicer in response to detecting that the adjustment is outside the predefined range (1218).

11. The apparatus of any preceding claim, wherein initiating the adjustment of the parameter of the splicer comprises outputting, to the splicer, data triggering the adjustment of the parameter by the splicer.

12. The apparatus of any preceding claim, wherein the portion of the hollow core fibre is one of: microstructure of the hollow core fibre, outer cladding of the hollow core fibre.

13. A splicer comprising the apparatus of any of claims 1-12.

A method for adaptively calibrating a splicer, the method comprising: receiving a first image of a portion of a hollow core fiber (610, 1302), the hollow core fiber comprising a splice produced by the splicer, wherein the portion of the hollow core fiber in the first image is proximate to the splice; analysing the first image to detect a feature associated with the first image (612, 1304), the feature representing a property of the portion of the hollow core fiber proximate to the splice; using the feature, computing an adjustment to be made to a parameter of the splicer (614, 1314), wherein the adjustment is computed so as to target one or more of:1) a reduced optical propagation loss of a subsequent splice of hollow core fiber which is produced by the splicer after initiating the adjustment, and2) a higher strength of a subsequent splice of hollow core fiber which is produced by the splicer after initiating the adjustment; and initiating the adjustment of the parameter of the splicer (618, 1318).

15. The method according to claim 13, wherein the portion of the hollow core fibre is one of: microstructure of the hollow core fibre, outer cladding of the hollow core fibre.
