Multi-user system for creating and maintaining a medical-decision-making knowledge base

A multi-user system for creating and maintaining a knowledge base is implemented on a variety of computer systems, including single-user personal computers, networked personal computers, and data communications networks, including the Internet. The system has a graphic user interface which can be easily learned by non-programmers. The knowledge base is displayed as a hierarchical multiplicity of nodes, in which each node is related to one or more superior nodes. Title of text, rules, references, and attributes associated with each node are displayed, and may be modified. Simulation is used to verify the knowledge base once generated. Data may be extracted from the bases in the form of hard-copy books, databases for downloading into Web browsers, and databases for downloading into hand-held computers including a multiplicity of grids, and a multiplicity of branches in the form of a logic tree. The user may choose one of the alternative display formats, and the hierarchy can be displayed in either collapsed view or expanded view. Interference between two or more users accessing the system concurrently is prevented by a locking and authorization subsystem, which also prevents unauthorized access to the environment. The system provides an organization of workflow into a multiplicity of development stages. Each such stage has associated with it an authorization level, developers working on the system concurrently are limited by these levels to access only particular stages and levels of development.

Uterine cervical cancer computer-aided-diagnosis (CAD)

Uterine cervical cancer Computer-Aided-Diagnosis (CAD) according to this invention consists of a core processing system that automatically analyses data acquired from the uterine cervix and provides tissue and patient diagnosis, as well as adequacy of the examination. The data can include, but is not limited to, color still images or video, reflectance and fluorescence multi-spectral or hyper-spectral imagery, coherent optical tomography imagery, and impedance measurements, taken with and without the use of contrast agents like 3-5% acetic acid, Lugol's iodine, or 5-aminolevulinic acid. The core processing system is based on an open, modular, and feature-based architecture, designed for multi-data, multi-sensor, and multi-feature fusion. The core processing system can be embedded in different CAD system realizations. For example: A CAD system for cervical cancer screening could in a very simple version consist of a hand-held device that only acquires one digital RGB image of the uterine cervix after application of 3-5% acetic acid and provides automatically a patient diagnosis. A CAD system used as a colposcopy adjunct could provide all functions that are related to colposcopy and that can be provided by a computer, from automation of the clinical workflow to automated patient diagnosis and treatment recommendation.

Medical risk assessment system and method

A method of assessing risk for an individual to experience a specific outcome within a disease entity within a specified time frame is provided. Peer-reviewed scientific publications are analyzed to identify pertinent risk factors (212) for developing disease processes and their possible complications. Information that characterizes an individual (218) in relation to the identified risk factors is then received, preferably responsive to question (224) regarding any demographic values of an individual under test and questions regarding medical chracterisitics of the individual under test. An estimate of risk of the individual acquiring the outcome within a specified time frame is performed based on the identified plurality of risk factors (212). Assessment of medical risk and condition may include analyzing peer-reviewed scientific publications to identify populations affected by a medical outcome and for each population respective risk factors that affect risk of acquiring the medical outcome within a specified time-frame, associating an individual with one of the identified population, identifying information that characterizes the individual (218) in relation to the respective risk factors other associated population, and estimating risk of the individual having the medical outcome within the specified the time frame responsive to the identified information. Promotion of business on a site of a computer network is provided by supplying an on-line questionnaire (224) regarding characteristics of individual (218) under test, receiving information regarding characteristics of the individual under test, and responsive to the received information, providing an assessment of the individual under test having a medical outcome within a specified time frame.
