Claims
Compositions and methods are provided for improving one or more agronomic traits of a plant, including the use of one or more fatty acids, including fatty acid methyl esters and fatty acid ethyl esters, that kill or inhibit cell growth in the shoot apical meristem. The use of the composition between vegetative growth stage 1 (V1) and vegetative growth stage 6 (V6) of the plant is described.
1. A method for improving one or more agronomic traits of a plant comprising applying an effective amount of a composition comprising one or more fatty acids and / or esters thereof to the apical meristem of the plant shoot to improve one or more agronomic traits of the plant compared to an untreated control plant.
6. A method for improving one or more agronomic traits of a plant, the method comprising the steps of: (a) planting seeds, tubers or seedlings of the plant, (b) applying to the apical meristem of the plant, at an appropriate time in the plant's growth cycle, an effective amount of a composition comprising one or more fatty acid methyl esters and / or one or more fatty acid ethyl esters to induce overcompensation and improve one or more agronomic traits of the plant compared to an untreated control plant, and (c) cultivating the plant having one or more improved agronomic traits to obtain one or more commercially relevant portions thereof.
19. A chemical composition for inducing plant overcompensation comprising one or more fatty acid methyl esters and / or one or more fatty acid ethyl esters and one or more biodegradable surfactants.
20. A method for manufacturing a chemical composition for inducing plant overcompensation comprising the steps of (a) preparing a solution of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) and / or fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE), and (b) adding sufficient amounts of one or more surfactants to the FAME and / or FAEE solution so that, when the composition is diluted in water, the final concentration of FAME and / or FAEE is between approximately 0.001 M and approximately 10.0 M and the FAME and / or FAEE is evenly distributed in the water.
