AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Rotatable cutting bits experience wear and require frequent replacement due to harsh operating environments, with conventional designs inefficiently distributing wear and using excess material that reduces cutting performance and increases production costs.

Method used

A rotatable cutting bit design featuring a tool body and cutting tip brazed together with a mass of brazing alloy extending into cavities, aligning the components for even wear distribution and reducing material waste, using a cold heading process to form the tool body and brazing the cutting tip to the tool body with a concave cross-section brazing alloy for a robust bond.

Benefits of technology

The design maintains cutting sharpness by evenly distributing wear and reduces material usage, enhancing cutting efficiency and extending tool life while minimizing production costs.

Abstract

A rotatable cutting bit assembled with a tool body having a head portion and a first cavity, and a cutting tip having a base portion and a second cavity. A mass of brazing alloy keys the cavities together so that the cutting tip and the tool body are coaxially aligned in a central longitudinal axis. The cutting tip brazes to the tool body by brazing alloy flowing outwardly from within the first and second cavities into a gap between the head portion and the base portion. A first outer diameter of the head portion is substantially equal to a second outer diameter of the base portion. The performance and longevity of the rotatable cutting bit formed is enhanced by having an exterior surface that is flush across the base portion and the head portion.
