[0002] RINSE-FREE CLEANSING COMPOSITION
[0003] TECHNICAL FIELD
[0004] This invention relates to a formulation. In particular, though not exclusively, this invention relates to a rinse-free cleansing composition.
[0005] BACKGROUND
[0006] Personal care encompasses a wide range of products, from those designed to be rinsed off (soaps, shampoos) to those meant to remain on the skin or hair (moisturizers, sunscreens). While constant improvement is sought in both cleansing efficacy and product retention, a crucial element remains: minimizing the amount of material left behind while maximizing its effectiveness and safety.
[0007] Conventional cleansing routines often require rinsing with water, a step that can be inconvenient and environmentally taxing, especially when water access is limited. The sheer volume of water used during rinsing raises concerns, leading to the development of rinse-free cleansing compositions which offer convenience and the potential for significant water conservation.
[0008] However, existing rinse-free cleansing compositions may suffer from drawbacks. Some formulations might leave a significant residue on the skin, causing a sticky or uncomfortable feeling such as, formulations with high surfactant levels (above 1% and reaching 5%) can leave an unpleasant sticky feeling on the skin. Others may lack sufficient cleansing power to effectively remove dirt and grime. Several attempts have been made to solve the aforementioned problem such as, adding low levels of oil-absorbing materials like clays, starches, or cellulose-based absorbents, or incorporating ethanol. While such solutions can potentially address the stickiness issue, other drawbacks still persist.
[0009] Therefore, in light of the foregoing discussion, there exists a need to overcome the aforementioned drawbacks related with conventional cleansing compositions and provide a novel rinse-free cleansing composition that offers effective cleansing without the need for water rinsing while maintaining a comfortable after-feel on the skin and remaining environmentally responsible.
[0010] It has now been established that the afore-mentioned problems are solved by the rinse-free cleansing composition according to claim 1. In particular, the present inventor established that the use of a combination of triethyl citrate and a low amount (e.g. <1.2% w / w with respect to the total weight of the rinse-free cleansing composition, preferably <0.6% w / w) of a surfactant composition within the rinse-free cleansing composition unexpectedly improves the skin feel (reduced tackiness) of the rinse-free cleansing composition. Without wishing to be bound by theory, it is believed that the triethyl citrate and surfactant composition act synergistically to reduce the amount of residue remaining after application of the rinse-free cleansing composition to the body.
[0011] SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0014] In a second aspect, the present invention provides a dispensing unit, such as a spray or self-foamer, containing the rinse-free cleansing composition according to the first aspect.
[0015] In a third aspect, the present invention provides the use of the rinse-free cleansing composition of the first aspect to remove contaminants, such as dirt and grime, from a surface such as the skin or hair of a subject.
[0016] The present disclosure provides a rinse-free cleansing composition. The term "rinse-free cleansing composition" as used herein refers to a formulation of multiple elements (or components) configured to remove contaminants (such as, dirt, grime, etc.) from a given surface without the need for rinsing with water. Alternatively stated, the rinse-free cleansing composition (or simply referred to as, cleansing composition) may be defined as a self-foaming surfactant (or cleansing) system that doesn't require rinse off (or excess water usage) unlike other conventional all body cleansers. The cleansing composition is configured to provide effective cleaning without the need for rinsing, while prioritizing comfortable after-feel and environmental responsibility by eliminating the rinsing step in order to minimize water consumption and associated energy use, resulting in a smaller carbon footprint. Moreover, the cleansing composition may be a biodegradable composition to further promote environmental friendliness. Furthermore, the cleansing composition effectively cleans the surface (such as, skin) without leaving a sticky residue or causing irritation. The cleansing composition of the present disclosure is configured to redefine personal care cleansing by introducing a convenient, sustainable, and effective solution that prioritizes both user experience and environmental responsibility. Notably, the unique combination of ingredients used in the cleansing composition surpasses existing (or conventional) solutions such as, rinse- free products, by noticeably improving the after-feel on the skin and cleansing efficacy thereof.
[0017] Conventional cleansing routines often require rinsing with water, a step that can be inconvenient and environmentally taxing, especially when water access is limited. The sheer volume of water used during rinsing raises concerns, leading to the development of rinse-free cleansing compositions which offer convenience and the potential for significant water conservation.
[0018] However, existing rinse-free cleansing compositions may suffer from drawbacks.
[0019] The present invention aims to overcome the limitations faced by conventional solutions by providing a novel rinse-free cleansing composition that offers effective cleansing without requiring rinse-off or excess water usage. The cleansing composition is designed to be gentle on the skin while leaving it feeling clean and refreshed. The developed cleansing composition balances cleansing efficacy with minimal residue, promoting convenience and environmental sustainability. The rinse-free cleansing composition which, being stable and having an extremely low skin irritating property, ensures high skin comfort, and exhibits enhanced cleansing ability owing to the better surface distribution, cushion foam improvement, reduction of foam's bubbles size, rinse-off improvement, reduction of residue causing stickiness feeling on skin, enhanced long- lasting surface smoothness, when used in a cosmetic preparation or the like. Optionally, the cleansing composition is then formulated together with other active ingredients like emulsifying foaming agents, other surfactants, antistatic, foam boosting agents, conditioning agents, viscosity controlling agents, bulking, masking agents, buffer agents, humectants, preservatives, perfuming agents, to obtain the final high- performance cleansing composition of the present disclosure.
[0020] In one or more embodiments, the cleansing composition is formulated as at least one of: a spray, a self-foamer, a wipe, or a gel. Optionally, the multiple components (i.e., solute(s) and solvent(s)) of the cleansing composition are stored in a dispensing unit (such as, a spray, fluid dispenser, and the like), optionally having multiple compartments for individually storing each of the multiple components of the cleansing composition and thereby mixing the multiple components based on either predefined configuration(s), or user-defined configuration(s), to provide a customized cleansing composition developed based on the needs of the user and / or implementation.
[0021] In one or more embodiments, the cleansing composition is at least one of: a hair care product, a cosmetic product, a hygiene product, or a medicament. The cleansing composition of the disclosure may be implemented as an appropriate hair care product selected from the group consisting of, but not limited to, shampoos, hair conditioners, rinse-out conditioners, hair treatment compositions, hair colouring systems, hair care sprays and other non-aerosol sprays. Further, the cleansing composition may be implemented as an cosmetic product such as, skin care products, selected from the group consisting of, but not limited to, sunscreen products, compositions comprising UV blockers or protectors, anti-aging products, foundations, moisturizing preparations, tanning preparations, skin care moisturizers, skin wet wipes, skin pore wet wipes, pore cleansers, blemish reducers, skin scrubs, skin peel enhancers, skin wipes, ointments, skin protectants, skin powders, facial cleansers, antiacne preparations, bath products, shower products, liquid soaps, bar soaps, body oils, body lotions, body gels, hand liquids, shaving lotions, aftershave or pre-shave products, etc. Furthermore, the cleansing composition may be implemented as an appropriate fragrance and / or preparation consisting of, but not limited to, odorous ingredients, deodorizing and antiperspirant preparations, protection formulations, treatment creams, lipsticks, dry and wet makeup, powders, depilatory agents. It will be appreciated by a person skilled in the art that the implementation of the cleansing composition of the present disclosure is dependent upon the specific type and properties of the compositions used therein and may be varied as per the implementation without any limitations to the present disclosure.
[0022] The rinse-free cleansing composition of the present disclosure comprises a solute part in an amount ranging 1.13% weight by weight (w / w) to 12.25% w / w with respect to a total weight of the rinse-free cleansing composition. The term "solute part" as used herein refers to a specific portion of the cleansing composition operable to be dissolved (or mixed) with another substance (or solvent) to form the cleansing solution. Typically, the solute part contains active cleansing ingredients and other functional components that dissolve in a given solvent to give characteristic cleansing capability to the cleansing composition. The solute part of the cleansing composition is present in a concentration range of 1.13% w / w to 12.25% w / w with respect to the total weight of the rinse-free cleansing composition i.e., the solute part of the cleansing composition comprises anywhere between 1.13 to 12.25% of the total weight of the cleansing composition. For example, in a given cleansing composition having a total weight of 100g, the solute part having a concentration of 5% w / w with respect to the total weight of the cleansing composition (solute part, solvent part, and potentially other ingredients) implies 5 grams (g) of solute part per 100g of the cleansing composition. The total weight of the cleansing composition comprises at least the solute part and a solvent part as will be discussed in detail hereinafter. It will be appreciated by a person skilled in the art that the exact amount of solute part in the cleansing composition will depend on the desired cleaning efficacy and other formulation factors and may be varied as per the needs of the implementation without any limitations to the present disclosure.
[0023] Herein, the solute part comprises a surfactant composition in an amount ranging 0.02% w / w to 1.20% w / w with respect to the total weight of the cleansing composition. The term "surfactant" as used herein refers to a surface-active agent i.e., a molecule with a unique structure having capability to interact with both water and oil. For example, the surfactant composition may include sodium methyl 2-sulfolaurate and disodium 2- sulfolaurate. The surfactant(s) generally comprise a hydrophilic head (attracted to water) and a hydrophobic tail (repellent to water) to provide the dual-functionality of interacting with both water and oil(s). Herein, the surfactant composition is configured to lower the surface tension of the cleansing composition to allow effective cleaning via the cleansing composition. In an embodiment, the surfactant composition includes at least a sodium salt of 2-Sulfolauric acids and Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate.
[0024] Conventionally, the observed approximate level of surfactants used in existing rinse-free cleansing products is typically higher than 1% and up to 5% of the total weight of the said product, which results in a sticky residue feeling and significant efforts have been made combatting the undesired after-feel such as, addition of low level of oil absorbing particles (clays, starches, cellulose type of absorbents) or ethanol, and thus, potentially required to be towelled-off for physical removal of residue. Thus, in light of the aforementioned problem, the cleansing composition of the present disclosure utilizes low levels of the surfactant composition i.e., in the range of 0.02% w / w to 1.20% w / w with respect to the total weight of the cleansing composition, in order to eliminate, or at least minimize, the sticky residue feeling on application of the cleansing composition. In an exemplary scenario, the surfactant composition is utilized in a concentration of 0.60% w / w with respect to the total weight of the cleansing composition. In a preferred embodiment, the rinse-free cleansing composition comprises the surfactant composition in an amount of less than 1.0% w / w with respect to the total weight of the rinse-free cleansing composition, preferably less than 0.6% w / w, more preferably less than 0.5% w / w, most preferably less than 0.4% w / w, with respect to the total weight of the rinse-free cleansing composition. For example, the rinse- free cleansing composition may comprise the surfactant composition in an amount of 0.02 to 1.0% w / w with respect to the total weight of the rinse-free cleansing composition, preferably 0.04% w / w to 0.6% w / w, more preferably 0.06% w / w to 0.5% w / w, most preferably 0.06% w / w to 0.4% w / w, especially 0.12% w / w to 0.4% w / w, with respect to the total weight of the rinse-free cleansing composition.
[0025] In one or more embodiments, the surfactant composition is selected from at least one of: an anionic surfactant, an amphoteric surfactant, a nonionic surfactant, or a mixture thereof. Typically, at least one of an anionic surfactant, an amphoteric surfactant, a non-ionic surfactant is utilized either separately, or in combination with one another, to improve the desired properties of the surfactant composition. It will be appreciated that the specific type of surfactant chosen for the rinse-free cleansing composition will depend on several factors including, but not limited to, desired cleaning power (for e.g., anionic surfactants generally offer the strongest cleaning action), mildness (for e.g., non-ionic surfactants are often preferred for sensitive skin applications) and compatibility with other active ingredients. The surfactant composition preferably comprises or consists of two or more different surfactants, preferably three or more different surfactants, more preferably three or four different surfactants. [0053] Experimental Data:
[0054] Upon performing numerous experiments across a wide spectrum of varying implementing conditions, for example, different application surfaces or skin types, different weight ranges for different solutes in the solute part and different solvents in the solvent part of the cleansing composition, several types of enhanced rinse-free cleansing compositions were obtained having different characteristic capabilities.
[0055] Example 1
[0056] Table 1: The table illustrates two exemplary samples of the rinse-free cleansing composition having an enhanced cleaning effect offering minimal or no residue after application i.e., doesn't require rinse-off.
[0057] Example 2
[0058] A comparative study comparing the effect of surfactant level and triethyl citrate level on foam quality / skin-feel was performed. No towel off used during trial. Approximately 2 grams of product was applied to the whole arm with palm at each application. The composition of each sample is reported in Table 2 whilst the results of the foam quality / skin-feel test are reported in Table 3. Samples according to the present invention are referred to as IE1, 2,..., etc., and samples not according to the present invention are referred to as CE1, 2, ... etc. All amounts are given in % by weight and refer to the neat amount of that substance. For the evaluation of drying speed, tacky feel and film residue reported in Table 3, testing was conducted on a panel of three individuals using a 0-5 scale where: 0 = Very poor performance
[0059] 1 = Poor performance
[0060] 2 = Fair / acceptable performance
[0061] 3 = Good performance
[0062] 4 = Very good performance 5 = Excellent performance
[0063]
[0064] Table 2:
[0065]
[0066]
[0067] Table 3: Results of foam quality / skin-feel testing
[0068]
[0069] In summary, the examples demonstrate that formulations with higher surfactant (foaming / cleansing agent) levels (above 1.20%) tend to leave a tackier feel and slower drying time, often creating a 'tightness' or 'stripping' sensation, making the skin feel as if it needs washing down. In contrast, low surfactant formulas, particularly those with Triethyl Citrate, improve skin feel upon dry down and reduce the tacky afterfeel. Although low surfactant formulas can still have a tacky feel and slow dry down, the addition of Triethyl Citrate significantly reduces tack and improves the overall dry down. While Triethyl Citrate enhances skin feel, it doesn't fully counterbalance the challenges posed by higher surfactant (foaming / cleansing) concentrations, such as residue and tacky dry down. Thus both triethyl citrate and low surfactant levels are required in order to obtain the best results. Without wishing to be bound by theory therefore, it is believed that triethyl citrate and the low surfactant levels act synergistically to produce low surfactant formulas which dry faster, feel gentler, leave minimal residue, and are significantly better perceived.
