Description

An AKD-PEI conjugate and the composition and preparation thereofTechnical Field

[0001] The present invention pertains to the field of sizing agents. Specifically, the present invention relates to an AKD-PEI conjugate, comprising a moiety derived from polyethyleneimine (PEI) and a moiety derived from an alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) . The present invention further relates to preparation method of the AKD-PEI conjugate and a composition comprising the AKD-PEI conjugate.

[0002] Bacground Art

[0003] Paper is formed by intertwining materials containing plant cellulose. Plant cellulose has hydroxyl groups, which impart a certain degree of hydrophilicity to the paper. Plant cellulose also intertwined to form a pore structure that has capillary action, which imparts to the paper a degree of permeability to fluids such as water, oil, ink and fruit juices. Therefore, the paper surface generally needs to be treated to improve performance. During the papermaking process, the paper surface can be treated by applying a sizing agent. The sizing agent, when applied and dried, can form a protective coating (e.g., on the paper surface, or on the cellulose surface) which reduces the direct contact of the paper with fluids, thereby providing the paper with improved mechanical strength and reduced fluid permeability. According to different pH values, sizing agents can be divided into acidic, neutral and alkaline sizing agents. In recent years, neutral sizing has become more and more popular in the papermaking industry because of its ability to meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements and impart good properties to paper.

[0004] A commonly used neutral sizing agent is alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) , which has been used for more than 50 years. AKD is a waxy solid at room temperature. AKD can be used as both a pulp sizing agent and a surface sizing agent. AKD is usually represented by the following structure:  wherein each of the Ra, Rb, Rc and Rd group at each occurrence thereof, is independently selected from hydrogen, optionally substituted straight-chain or branched C1-C30 hydrocarbyl. It has been found through research that each of the Ra, Rb, Rc and Rd groups in the ketene dimer can be not only a saturated hydrocarbyl but also an unsaturated hydrocarbyl (e.g., an alkenyl group derived from oleic acid) . By convention, ketene dimers with unsaturated hydrocarbyl groups are still called AKD (alkyl ketene dimers) .

[0005] Conventional AKD sizing agents are well known in the art. The hydrophobic long-chain groups of AKD (i.e., one or more of Ra, Rb, Rc and Rd) generate hydrophobic effects on the cellulose surface and cover part of the pore structure, thereby imparting hydrophobicity and permeation resistance to the paper. The four-membered lactone ring in the AKD molecule can also react with the hydrocarbyl on cellulose to form an ester bond, thereby being positioned on cellulose. One of the reactions of AKD with cellulose is schematically shown below:

[0006] However, the four-membered lactone ring in AKD leads to a series of stability issues. Meanwhile, the single functionality of AKD as a sizing agent hampers its application in the papermaking industry.

[0007] There are always continuous demands in the art for an AKD product with improved stability and multifunctionality.Summary of the Invention

[0137] Temperatures described herein refer to degrees Celsius. As required, the concentration / content / amount / part described herein can be the concentration / content / amount / part expressed by mass, volume, mole, mass / volume, and volume / mass.

[0138] As used herein, the term “about” refers to a range of ±5%of a value or a specific value. For example, the term “about 100 g / mol” refers to a range of about 95 g / mol to 105 g / mol, or refers to a specific value of 100 g / mol.

[0139] As used herein, the term “free” means that no new covalent bonds are formed with other molecules during the chemical reaction. Therefore, a “free AKD” still retains the lactone ring structure, and the amine group on a “free PEI” has not been converted into an amide bond.

[0140] As used herein, the term “lactone ring” is used interchangeably with “lactone” , “lactone bond” , or “lactone functional group” .

[0141] As used herein, the term "amide bond" refers to a C (=O) NH structure and / or a C (=O) N structure.

[0142] As used herein, when involving PEI or a moiety and / or a conjugate comprising PEI, the term “molecular weight” can be number-average molecular weight and / or weight-average molecular weight. Preferably, the term “molecular weight” refers to weight-average molecular weight.

[0143] It is to be understood that both the foregoing general description and the following detailed description are merely exemplary of the embodiments of the invention and are intended to provide an overview or framework for understanding the nature and character of the invention as it is claimed. The accompanying drawings are included to provide a further understanding of the various claimed embodiments and aspects of the invention, and are incorporated in and constitute a part of this specification.Brief Description Of The Drawings

[0154] While the following disclosure will particularly show and describe with references to preferred embodiments thereof, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes in form and details may be made therein without departing from the scope of the disclosure encompassed by the appended claims. It should also be understood that the following examples are only used to illustrate the present invention rather than to limit the scope of the present invention. Unless otherwise indicated, the reagents described in the following examples are commercially available.

[0155] EXAMPLES

[0156] Example 1: Synthesis and Characterization

[0157] 100 g of AKD1865 (C18 accounts for 65wt. %and C16 accounts for 35wt. %in the alkyl group, Kemira) samples were weighed and charged into three 500 ml three-necked flasks, heated to 105℃ in an oil bath with stirring. After observing that AKD1865 was dissolved, 6g, 8g, and 10g of PEI300 (with a molecular weight of around 300, branched, liquid, 99%, Admas) were added to the three 500 ml three-necked flasks, respectively, with stirring. The reactions were stopped after 30 min. The resulting products were labeled as PEI3-6, PEI3-8, and PEI3-10, respectively.

[0158] AKD1865, PEI3-6, and PEI3-10 were analyzed and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (Nicolet 380, Thermo Scientific) (Figure 1a) . Compared with the raw material AKD1865, the products PEI3-6 and PEI3-10 had newly formed amide bonds (~1643 cm-1) (referred to as the amide region in Figure 1a) , and the corresponding AKD lactone peak (~1847 cm-1) (referred to as the AKD dimer region in Figure 1a) is decreased or even disappeared, indicating that the lactone ring in AKD participated in the chemical reaction of the present invention. PEI300, PEI3-6 and PEI3-10 were analyzed and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (Nicolet 380, Thermo Scientific) (Figure 1b) . Compared with the raw material PEI300, the primary amine (~3360 cm-1, ~1604 cm-1) and secondary amine (~3270 cm-1) in the products PEI3-6 and PEI3-10 decreased or disappeared, indicating that the primary amine and secondary amine in PEI participated in the chemical reaction of the present invention.

[0159] AKD1865, PEI3-6, PEI3-8 and PEI3-10 were analyzed and characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (Figure 2) . As the addition amount of PEI300 increased, the AKD lactone peak (~4.7 ppm) (referred to as the AKD dimer region in Figure 2) showed a trend of gradually decreasing to disappearing, and the generated amide peak (~3.4 ppm) (referred to as the amide region in Figure 2) showed an increasing trend.

[0160] The molecular weight of PEI3-6 was determined by gel permeation chromatography-differential detector (Waters 2695 GPC / Waters 2414 RI) . Chromatographic column: Styragel guard column + Styragel HR4+Styragel HR2+Styragel HR1 (Waters) . Mobile phase: tetrahydrofuran (chromatographic grade, Yonghua Chemical) , flow rate of 1 ml / min-1, polystyrene (Polystyrene std kit, Agilent) as standard, injection concentration: 10 mg / ml. It was found that PEI3-6 had a molecular weight of 3513 Da (Figure 3) and is thus a low-molecular weight compound.

[0161] The above characterization results showed that the reaction of the present invention included the consumption of lactone rings, primary amines and secondary amines and the formation of amide bonds, indicating that AKD was conjugated with PEI.

[0162] Example 2: Synthesis and Characterization

[0163] 100 g of AKD1865 (C18 accounts for 65wt. %and C16 accounts for 35wt. %in the alkyl group, Kemira) samples were weighed and charged into three 500 ml three-necked flasks, heated to 105℃ in an oil bath with stirring. After observing that AKD1865 was dissolved, 6 g of PEI (M.W. 10000, branched, 30%, Admas) was added to the 500 ml three-necked flask, with stirring. The reactions were stopped after 30 min. The resulting product was labeled as PEI100-6.

[0164] The molecular weight of PEI100-6 was determined by gel permeation chromatography-differential detector (Waters 2695 GPC / Waters 2414 RI) . Chromatographic column: Styragel guard column + Styragel HR4+Styragel HR2+Styragel HR1 (Waters) . Mobile phase: tetrahydrofuran (chromatographic grade, Yonghua Chemical) , flow rate of 1 ml / min-1, polystyrene (Polystyrene std kit, Agilent) as standard, injection concentration: 10 mg / ml. It was found that PEI100-6 had a molecular weight of 27, 918 Da (Figure 4) .

[0165] Therefore, PEI100-6 was a high-molecular weight compound with a molecular weight greater than 10,000 Da.

[0166] Example 3: Thermal Stability and Alkali Resistance Tests

[0167] Thermal stability analysis: The AKD1865 sample and the PEI3-6 product prepared in Example 1 were analyzed using a thermogravimetric analyzer (Q500, TA) . 10 mg of AKD1865 sample and 10 mg of PEI3-6 product were weighed and placed on a sample plate in an air atmosphere. The temperature was raised according to the following heating program: starting from 40℃, heating to 600℃ at 40℃ / min, and maintaining for 5 min. The thermal analysis results showed that the decomposition temperature of PEI3-6 (351.26℃) was higher than that of AKD1865 sample (323.45℃) (Figure 5) . The above results demonstrated that PEI3-6 had improved thermal stability than AKD1865.

[0168] Alkali resistance test: 10 g of AKD1865 sample and 10 g of PEI3-6 product prepared in Example 1 were weighed respectively, placed in a beaker under a water bath at 85℃, 100 ml of 1M NaOH was added and stirred for 1h to perform alkaline resistance analysis of the sample. The sample was centrifuged (4500 rpm, 5 min, Thermo LABOFUGE 400R) , and the upper solid layer was taken. The treated AKD1865 and PEI3-6 were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (Nicolet 380, Thermo Scientific) . After treatment, the lactone ring (~1847 cm-1) of AKD1865 disappeared (Figure 6) (shaded area) , and the amide bond (1643 cm-1) of PEI3-6 was retained to some extent (Figure 7) (shaded area) . The above results demonstrated that, compared with AKD1865, PEI3-6 is alkali-resistant.

[0169] Example 4: Emulsification Experiment

[0170] 18g of AKD1865 (C18 accounts for 65wt. %and C16 accounts for 35wt. %in the alkyl group, Kemira) , PEI3-6 prepared in Example 1, and PEI3-10 prepared in Example 1 were weighed and placed in a container, melted in a water bath at 90℃, and were sheared at 25,000 rpm in a shearing machine (IKA T25) for 3 min with the addition of a certain amount of dispersant and cationic polymer. Then, after 20 min of ultrasonic dispersion, emulsion samples AKD1865E, PEI3-6E and PEI3-10E with solid contents of 15.15%, 14.46%and 14.46%, respectively, were prepared.

[0171] The particle size of the emulsion was measured using a Mastersizer 3000 (Malvern) (Figure 8) .

[0172] Example 5: Sizing Experiment and Paper Performance Test

[0173] The effect of the emulsion on paper properties was evaluated with recycled pulp (Kemira) sheet. The emulsion samples AKD1865E, PEI3-6E, PEI3-10E and PEI100-6E prepared in Example 4 were diluted to 1%using deionized water. A 0.1%FennoPol K4230T (Kemira) solution was prepared with deionized water. The sheet weight was 80 gsm. A physical mixture of AKD and PEI was also tested. The blank control is AKD-free.

[0174] The amount of emulsion added was 0.8% (solid content) of paper dry weight, and the amount of FennoPol K4230T (Kemira) solution added was 0.09%of paper dry weight. The steps for sheet were performed according to GB / T 24324-2009 Pulps -Preparation of laboratory sheets for physical testing -Conventional sheet-former method. The finished paper sheets were placed in a constant temperature and humidity room (23℃, 50%humidity) overnight.

[0175] The Cobb value was tested according to the standard method of TAPPI T441 Water Absorptiveness of Sized (Non-bibulous) Paper, Paperboard, and Corrugated Fiberboard (Cobb Test) . The test lasts for 1 min.

[0176] The tensile test was performed using L&W Tensile Tester in accordance with the standard method in GB / T 12914, Paper and board --Determination of tensile properties.

[0177] The test results are shown in Table 1 below.

[0178] Table 1

[0179] The test results show that the PEI3-6 product of the present invention has both sizing and strength enhancement properties. In contrast, neither AKD emulsion, the physical mixture of AKD emulsion and PEI, nor PEI100-6 has such dual functionality. Specifically, PEI3-6 achieves a comparable sizing effect (21.00 vs. 17.53) and a strength improvement of about 15% (1.83 vs. 1.58) compared to AKD.

[0180] Example 6: Differential Scanning Calorimetry Test

[0181] The AKD1865 sample and the PEI3-6 sample prepared in Example 1 were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC Q20, TA) . About 5 mg of the sample was taken. The gas flow rate was set to 10 ml / min and the atmosphere was set to nitrogen. The test procedures included starting from 25℃, heating to 100℃ at a rate of 10℃ / min and maintaining for 5 minutes. The test results (Figure 9) showed that, AKD1865 sample exhibited one endothermic peak (~51.69℃) while PEI3-6 sample exhibited two endothermic peaks (~51.90℃ and ~68.26℃) . The above experimental results indicated that PEI3-6 was not cross-linked.
