Abstract
Description
TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The present invention relates to work gloves for magnetically attracting and retaining one or more small fasteners and multi-layered magnetic pouches for use with the work gloves. More particularly, but not exclusively, the present invention relates to work gloves for magnetically attracting and retaining one or more small fasteners and multi-layered magnetic pouches for use with the work gloves as an aid for construction workers or other manual laborers. The work gloves according to the present invention can include gloves for engineers, laborers and artisans, as well as gardening gloves, cycling gloves, sports gloves or fashion gloves.
[0002] PRIOR ART
[0003] Known work gloves incorporate a single magnet within the glove, for example, at a region corresponding to the back of the wearer's hand. The purpose of such gloves is to allow the wearer to engage an item, such as a bolt or screw, with the magnet, thereby freeing the wearer's free fingers to perform a task. The magnet is typically relatively large so as to provide a large magnetic surface area. A disadvantage of using a single magnet is that the magnetic attraction experienced by the small fasteners held on the magnetic surface is typically such that the small fasteners magnetically attach to one another. As a result, it can be difficult to separate one small fastener without moving or dislodging another small fastener. Removing one small fastener often results in unintentionally removing another small fastener, which can fall off once the magnetic attraction is removed.
[0004] Known work gloves are shown in Figure 1 The work gloves include a glove body and an adhesively bound layered structure attached to the back of the glove body. The adhesively bound layered structure includes a first layer composed of a foam, a second layer and a plurality of magnets located therebetween. The first layer includes a plurality of circular holes. A single cylindrical magnet is located in each hole.
[0005] Incorporating several discrete magnets within the work gloves of Figure 1 helps to address the disadvantages associated with using a single large magnet described above. However, Figure 1 the work gloves of have several disadvantages.
[0006] Firstly, the magnets are tightly enclosed within the holes of the first layer. This arrangement reduces the magnetic attraction experienced by the small fasteners held on the glove.
[0007] Secondly, enclosing each magnet within a hole increases manufacturing complexity and therefore associated manufacturing costs. Furthermore, the magnets are placed within the holes at predetermined locations. Therefore, in order to enable magnets or additional magnets to be placed at other locations, it is necessary to modify the manufacturing process to allow holes to be formed at the other locations.
[0008] Third, the use of discretely placed magnets reduces the effective magnetic working area of the glove. This can cause the small fasteners to be dropped. For example, the head of a screw placed on the surface of the glove can be located above a magnet with the shank of the screw extending into the area below the glove where there is no magnet. Thus, only a small portion of the screw can be subjected to the magnetic attraction of the magnet, thereby increasing the likelihood that the screw will be dropped. SUMMARY
[0009] According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a working glove for magnetically attracting and retaining one or more small fasteners, the working glove comprising:
[0010] a glove body configured to accommodate a wearer's hand when in use, the glove body having a back surface arranged to overlie the back of the wearer's hand; and
[0011] a multi-layered pocket attached to the back surface of the glove body,
[0012] wherein the multi-layered pocket comprises:
[0013] a magnetic layer comprised of a magnetic material;
[0014] a cover layer arranged to contact the one or more small fasteners; and
[0015] a plurality of magnets or ferromagnets located between the magnetic layer and the cover layer, each of the magnets or ferromagnets being magnetically attached to the magnetic layer, wherein the magnets are arranged in a spaced apart relationship.
[0016] The ferromagnets can include magnetic or non-magnetic pieces of iron, steel or other ferrous metals.
[0017] According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a multi-layered magnetic pocket for attachment to the back surface of a glove body of a working glove so that the working glove can magnetically attract and retain one or more small fasteners, the multi-layered magnetic pocket comprising:
[0018] a magnetic layer comprised of a magnetic material;
[0019] a cover layer arranged to contact the one or more small fasteners;
[0020] a plurality of magnets or ferromagnets located between the magnetic layer and the cover layer, each of the magnets or ferromagnets being magnetically attached to the magnetic layer, wherein the magnets are arranged in a spaced apart relationship; and
[0021] an attachment member for removably securing the magnetic pocket to the back surface of the glove body.
[0022] The working glove comprises a plurality of magnets or ferromagnets magnetically attached to a magnetic layer. For brevity, the magnets or ferromagnets are referred to as "magnets" in this specification. This arrangement enables the manufacturer to place the magnets at any suitable location on the magnetic layer. The magnetic layer also mitigates or prevents the magnets from displacing towards each other during manufacture of the glove as well as during use of the finished product.
[0023] Furthermore, the magnetic layer also provides magnetic attraction. This magnetic force can be experienced by small fasteners held on the cover layer. The cover layer can have areas of strong magnetic force and areas of weaker magnetic force, the areas of strong magnetic force being directly above each discrete magnet and the weaker magnetic force being provided primarily by the magnetic layer between each magnet. This arrangement cooperatively increases the surface area of magnetism. This can allow a greater number of small fasteners to be securely held on the cover layer, especially in the vicinity of the magnets.
[0024] Another advantage is that the contact surface has different strengths of magnetic force. This helps to prevent the held small fasteners from becoming magnetically attached to each other or strongly magnetically bound to each other. For example, one screw can be held by one magnet and another screw can be held by another magnet, such that the shanks of each screw extend into the relatively weaker magnetic force area between each magnet and contact each other in that area. Here, the shanks of the two screws will be weakly magnetically bound, and removal of one screw will be unlikely to cause displacement or removal of the other screw.
[0025] The term pocket means a bag, pack, pouch or container having all four sides closed or alternatively having one or more sides fully or partially open. The advantage of having one or more sides open is that the user can access the interior of the pocket to facilitate removal or insertion of magnets. The pocket can have a mouth that opens and closes, for example, using a pin, clip or slide buckle fastener.
[0026] The cover layer and the magnetic layer can together define a plurality of individual enclosures for each of the magnets. The cover layer can be arranged to contact the magnetic layer at a series of locations and thereby define individual enclosures, for example, pockets.
[0027] Preferably, the enclosures are aligned parallel to each other. These arrangements can further prevent the magnets from displacing towards each other during manufacture of the glove as well as during use of the finished product.
[0028] The cover layer can be attached to the magnetic layer at the series of locations. The cover layer can be adhesively attached to the magnetic layer at the series of locations. Alternatively, the cover layer can be stitched or secured to the magnetic layer at the series of locations by fasteners or securing clips.
[0029] Alternatively, the cover layer can comprise a plurality of individual enclosures for each of the magnets. The individual enclosures can be formed by stitching or applying adhesive to adjacent layers. The enclosures can be open at one end to allow the magnets to be removed from the enclosures. Alternatively, the enclosures can be formed as sealed enclosures.
[0030] The cover layer can be hingedly attached to one side of the magnetic layer to form a pocket cover, for example, by stitching. The arrangement can form a wallet that can be used to hold items. This arrangement allows a user to grasp a non-metallic item, such as a plastic zip fastener and cable tie, between the cover layer and the magnetic layer when the cover layer and the magnetic layer are magnetically engaged with each other.
[0031] The working glove can further comprise at least one additional magnet stacked onto all or some of the magnets arranged in spaced apart relationship. The stacked magnets are preferably magnetically attached to each other. Stacking a group of magnets increases the magnetic force exerted in the area above the cover surface of the stacked magnets.
[0032] The magnetic layer can be a magnetic rubber layer. The magnetic material of the magnetic layer can be selected from the group consisting of: ferrite, iron or steel particles, or particles of other ferromagnetic materials.
[0033] The magnetic layer can be a flexible laminated unsegmented layer or a sheet of magnetic material.
[0034] The magnetic layer can be a flexible polymeric or elastomeric layer or sheet containing a filler of magnetic particulate material.
[0035] The back of the multi-layered pouch and the back of the glove body can be reversibly or detachably attached to each other.
[0036] The back of the multi-layered pouch and the back of the glove body can be reversibly or detachably attached by an attachment member. Preferably, the attachment member is an attachment layer as described hereinafter.
[0037] Preferably, the multi-layered pouch further comprises an attachment layer on the magnetic layer, the attachment layer being configured to reversibly or detachably attach to the back of the glove body. The attachment layer and the back of the glove body can be reversibly or detachably attached to each other by hook and loop fasteners, such as Velcro tape. Alternatively, the attachment layer and the back of the glove body can be reversibly or detachably attached to each other by button fasteners or clasp fasteners.
[0038] The detachable attachment of the multi-layered pouch simplifies the manufacture of the working glove and, after removal of the multi-layered pouch, allows the user to use the glove as a normal glove, the user not inadvertently picking up small hardware with the glove they do not want to wear.
[0039] Another advantage is that the glove according to the present invention can be stored by attachment to a ferromagnetic surface.
[0040] The glove can be personalized by decoration with, for example, a unique pattern or text applied by various means including printing or embroidery.
[0041] According to a third aspect of the present application, there is provided a kit of parts comprising:
[0042] A working glove comprising a glove body configured to house a wearer's hand in use, the glove body having a back surface arranged to cover over the back of the wearer's hand; and
[0043] A multi-layered magnetic packet as disclosed above. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS

[0072] The outer layer 9000 and the inner layer 10000 of the small packet 4000 collectively define independent enclosures for each of the magnets. For example, the inner layer 10000 can be attached to the outer layer 9000 at a series of locations, thereby defining independent enclosures. This arrangement helps to prevent the magnets 8000 from shifting across the surface of the magnetic layer 6000, and thereby from contacting one another. The inner layer 10000 can be attached to the outer layer 9000 by adhesive, stitching, or any other suitable attachment means.
