Abstract
Description
[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0002] This patent application claims priority to French application Serial No. 2006214 filed on June 15, 2020 and U.S. patent application Serial No. 63 / 002,820 filed on March 31, 2020, the disclosures of which are incorporated by reference as if fully rewritten herein.
[0003] Public domain
[0004] The present disclosure relates to hair care and treatment compositions, and to methods of using the compositions to care for hair and provide cosmetic benefits to hair.
[0005] background
[0006] People experience dry and damaged hair. Dryness and damage can occur due to several factors, including weather exposure, mechanical treatments (e.g., brushing hair), overtreatment with chemicals, hair dyeing, heat styling, etc. Split ends, dull hair, and worsening dry hair can also result from the combined use of cleaning products that can over-strip the hair of its natural oils. To mitigate damage, oil treatments, conditioners, hair masks, and chemical treatments are commonly used.
[0007] Due to their effectiveness and simplicity, the popularity and use of oils for dry hair treatment has increased. Commonly used oils include olive oil, mineral oil, avocado oil, almond oil, rice bran oil, and coconut oil. However, one problem is that the effects are often not seen after more than a few hours (e.g., 8 hours) of treatment, and several treatments are often required, making it time consuming and labor intensive.
[0008] It is desirable that the treatment of hair or damaged hair be not time consuming and labor intensive to use. A variety of methods have been developed to condition hair. A common method of providing conditioning benefits is through the use of rinse-off and leave-on hair conditioners and hair masks containing conditioning agents such as cationic surfactants and polymers, high melting point aliphatic compounds, low melting point oils, silicone compounds, and mixtures thereof. These products typically contain large amounts of water or are in the form of emulsions.
[0009] However, conventional conditioner products can still have some disadvantages, such as being too heavy on the hair or weighing down the hair and / or being greasy. In addition, some products may not be able to fully condition or improve the sensory perception of the hair or reduce the damage perception of the hair. Therefore, there is still a need to provide hair care or hair treatment products that provide improved hair manageability, such as improved hair alignment and reduced undesirable volume (especially reduced frizz), as well as hair repair benefits or less damage perception to the hair (especially for damaged hair), a weightless feeling on the hair (the hair is not weighed down) and improved overall appearance of the hair. There is also a need to develop hair care products that can simultaneously impart other benefits in addition to care and conditioning benefits, such as improved gloss, detangling, ease of combing, smoothness, shape, regularity, and closed hair ends, desirable volume, curl profile (for curly or wavy hair), and re-styling or re-styling (no need to re-apply product).
[0010] Public Overview
[0011] The present disclosure relates to hair care and treatment compositions; and to methods of conditioning and caring for hair using the compositions. The compositions are transparent and anhydrous or substantially anhydrous (i.e., the amount of water may be about 10% by weight or less). When applied to wet or damp hair, or when the composition is in contact with exogenous water, the composition forms an emulsion of a lamellar phase structure that surprisingly enhances the delivery of conditioning actives such as cationic surfactants, lubricants, and fatty compounds to surfaces such as hair. The deposition of these conditioning actives imparts a smooth and lubricating effect to the hair, resulting in a shiny and healthy appearance and tactile repair sensation to the hair. The hair is easily untangled, and dryness and frizz are reduced or minimized. The composition typically comprises:
[0012] (a) about 20% by weight or more of one or more polyols;
[0013] (b) from about 5 to about 70 weight percent of one or more monohydric alcohols having 2 to 6 carbon atoms;
[0014] (c) about 2% by weight or less of one or more aliphatic alcohols selected from cetyl alcohol and myristyl alcohol;
[0015] (d) from about 0.1 to about 5 weight percent of one or more cationic surfactants;
[0016] (e) about 1 weight percent or less of one or more aliphatic carbonates;
[0017] (f) about 1 wt % or less of one or more dialkyl ethers; and
[0018] (g) 0% to about 10% by weight water;
[0019] All weight percentages are based on the total weight of the composition.
[0020] The compositions of the present disclosure are clear and dissolved, non-emulsified, until applied to wet or damp hair or contacted with exogenous water, at which point the compositions form an opaque emulsion. In one embodiment, the resulting opaque emulsion has a lamellar phase structure.
[0021] The compositions of the present disclosure can be applied immediately after shampooing, for example, in place of a conditioner. The compositions can also be applied to the hair immediately after shampooing and conditioning the hair, for example, in the form of a rinse-off or leave-on treatment. The compositions can also be applied as a pre-shampoo treatment composition before shampooing. The compositions can also be used on the hair by themselves, without the need to use any other hair products. In addition, the compositions are directly applied to wet or damp hair and massaged into the hair to ensure uniform coverage. The compositions can also be first combined with a small amount of external water, wherein the resulting mixture is immediately applied to the hair and massaged into the hair to ensure uniform coverage. After being applied to the hair, the hair can be rinsed with water, dried and styled as needed. Another unique aspect of the compositions is that they can be used as leave-on products. The composition may be applied to wet or damp hair, or first mixed with a small amount of exogenous water, and allowed to remain on the hair indefinitely, ie, the hair composition is not removed or rinsed from the hair prior to drying and / or styling or shaping the hair.

[0118] How to deal with hair
[0119] Compositions of the present disclosure can be used for conditioning and / or managing hair. When the compositions are applied to wet or damp hair, they form a lamellar phase in situ. "Lamellar phase" generally refers to molecules of the non-polar tails of the long chains of polar heads being preserved in the form of double-layer sheets separated by a large amount of liquid in an environment of a large amount of polar liquid (i.e., water from the hair). The compositions can be applied to wet or damp hair and can be, for example, massaged into the hair by hand and / or applied to the entire hair with a comb or brush. This results in smoothness and softening of the hair, which reduces frizz, dryness and unwanted volume, and increases gloss. The compositions can be retained in the hair, or can be optionally rinsed off the hair before the hair is dried and / or styled.
[0120] Another unique aspect of the compositions is that they can be used as leave-on products. The compositions can be applied to wet or damp hair and left on the hair indefinitely, i.e., the hair composition is not removed or rinsed from the hair prior to styling the hair.
[0121] Methods for treating hair according to the present disclosure also include methods according to various routines. For example, the composition may be mixed with a shampoo (or conditioner) before being applied to the hair. Alternatively, the composition may be applied to the outer layer of the hair to which the shampoo (or conditioner) has been applied (or foamed into the hair). In addition, the composition may be applied separately from the shampoo (or conditioner), i.e., applied to the hair after the shampoo (or conditioner) has been rinsed off the hair.
[0122] Compositions of the present disclosure may be incorporated into a kit. For example, a kit may include at least one composition according to the present disclosure and one or more other compositions, such as shampoo, conditioner, etc. Various compositions are contained in the kit respectively. In some cases, the kit includes one or more compositions, shampoos and / or conditioners according to the present disclosure, which are all contained separately. The kit may also include one or more compositions, shampoos and conditioners according to the present disclosure. Instructions, mixing components, brushes, gloves, measuring tools, etc. may also be optionally included in the kit.
[0123] Composition can be packaged in various containers, such as instant containers. Non-limiting examples of available packaging include tubes, cans, caps, unit dose packages and bottles, including squeezable tubes and bottles. Packaging can be configured so that it can be fixed to a wall, such as a wall in a bathroom, including a wall of a shower stall or a bathtub. For example, packaging can be a container, which is configured to be fixed to a wall so that when pressure is applied to the container, the composition contained therein is discharged from one or more openings in the container. In some cases, packaging is a tube, such as a tube with two compartments, or a double tube, and each tube forms a separate compartment. Each compartment can include different compositions. For example, a tube or a compartment can include a composition according to the present disclosure, and another tube can include a composition used together with the composition, such as a shampoo, a conditioner, an all-in-one shampoo / conditioner (i.e., a conditioning shampoo; also referred to as "cleaning conditioner, co-wash").
[0124] Methods of treating hair according to the present disclosure may vary, but generally include applying the disclosed compositions to the hair, allowing the compositions to remain on the hair for a sufficient amount of time, and rinsing the compositions from the hair. The compositions may be applied to the hair in a certain order with other compositions. For example, the compositions may be applied to the hair before shampooing, after shampooing, before conditioning the hair, and / or after conditioning the hair. However, it is not specified that the compositions be used in a certain order.
[0125] In some cases, the composition is used in conjunction with another hair treatment composition in a routine, such as in an individual's normal shower / bath routine. The composition can be applied to the hair alone, or can be combined with one or more additional compositions. Combining the composition with one or more other compositions (e.g., shampoo, conditioner, rinse, etc.) can be used to eliminate multiple steps from a routine. For example, before being applied to the hair, the composition can be mixed with a shampoo (or conditioner). In this case, during cleaning or conditioning, the mixture of the shampoo (or conditioner) and the composition is applied to the hair simultaneously and rinsed off from the hair simultaneously. Alternatively, the composition can be applied to the outer layer (or foamed into the hair) of the hair to which the shampoo (or conditioner) has been applied, or vice versa. In this case, the composition can be applied to the hair, and it is not rinsed off from the hair, and then the shampoo (or conditioner) is applied to the hair. Alternatively, the shampoo (or conditioner) may be applied to the hair first and, without rinsing the shampoo (or conditioner) from the hair, the hair treatment composition is also applied to the hair.
[0126] When used in conjunction with a shampoo and / or conditioner, the composition may be mixed or used with the shampoo and / or conditioner in a ratio of from about 1:10 to about 10:1, from about 1:5 to about 5:1, from about 1:3 to about 3:1, from about 1:2 to about 2:1, from about 1:1 to about 4:1, from about 1:1 to about 3:1, or from about 1:1 to about 2:1 (hair treatment composition of the present disclosure: shampoo / conditioner, etc.).
[0127] The compositions of the present disclosure may be left on the hair for a minimum amount of time before being rinsed from the hair, but it is not necessary to leave the composition on the hair for an extended period of time. Conveniently, the composition may be applied and left on the hair for a period of time that is typical for conventional shampooing and / or conditioning. For example, the composition (whether or not in combination with another hair treatment composition such as a shampoo or conditioner) may be applied to the hair and left on the hair for a few seconds (1, 2, 3 or 5 seconds) up to about 1, about 2, about 5, about 10, about 15, about 20, about 25 or about 30 minutes.
[0128] When the composition is not mixed with another composition prior to application to the hair, the composition may be applied to the hair immediately after or before the hair is treated with another composition (e.g., a shampoo and / or conditioner). For example, the hair treatment composition may be applied to the hair within about 1, 2, 5, 10 or 20 minutes before or after the shampoo and / or conditioner is applied to the hair.
[0129] In various embodiments, the compositions of the present disclosure may be
[0130] - Mix with shampoo before applying to the hair; or
[0131] - Apply it to the hair with shampoo; or
[0132] - applying it to the hair after the shampoo has been rinsed from the hair; or
[0133] - Apply it to the hair with a conditioning agent; or
[0134] - mixing it with a conditioner before applying it to the hair; or
[0135] -Apply to the hair after the conditioner has been rinsed from the hair.
[0136] The compositions of the present disclosure are unique in their ability to provide hair with improved manageability, long-lasting styling and frizz control, and smoothness. Thus, the present disclosure relates to methods of treating hair, e.g., improving the manageability of hair, imparting long-lasting styling and frizz control, and imparting smoothness. More specifically, the compositions can be used in methods of conditioning hair, providing curl definition to hair, providing frizz control to hair, improving ease of compatibility and detangling, and providing smoothness. [0182] The terms "comprising," "having," and "including" are used in their open, non-limiting sense.
[0183] The terms "a", "an" and "the" are to be construed to cover the plural as well as the singular.
[0184] The compositions and methods of the present disclosure may comprise, consist of, or consist essentially of the basic elements and limitations of the present disclosure described herein, as well as any additional or optional ingredients, components, or limitations described or otherwise useful herein.
[0185] Compositions described throughout this disclosure may be "leave-in" products. A "leave-in" (also known as a leave-in) product refers to a hair treatment composition that is applied to the hair and is not subjected to immediate rinsing and / or washing for a period of at least 4 hours, or 4 hours to up to 72 hours, 4 hours to up to 48 hours, or 8 hours to up to 36 hours, or 8 hours to up to 24 hours. In other words, the product is applied to the hair and remains on the hair while styling, i.e., it is not removed from the hair prior to styling the hair.
[0186] All percentages, parts and ratios herein are based upon the total weight of the compositions of the present disclosure, unless otherwise specified.
[0187] All ranges and values disclosed herein are inclusive and combinable. For example, any value or point described herein that falls within the scope described herein can be used as a minimum or maximum value to derive a subrange, etc. In addition, all ranges provided are intended to include each specific range within a given range and a combination of subranges between given ranges. Therefore, the range of 1-5 specifically includes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, and subranges such as 2-5, 3-5, 2-3, 2-4, 1-4, etc.
[0188] Other than in the operating examples, or where otherwise indicated, all numbers expressing quantities of ingredients and / or reaction conditions are to be understood as modified in all instances by the term "about," meaning within + / - 5% of the stated number.
[0189] As used herein, the expression "at least one" is interchangeable with the expression "one or more" and thus includes individual components as well as mixtures / combinations.
[0190] As used herein, the term "active material" with respect to a percentage of an ingredient or raw material means that the ingredient or raw material is 100% active.
[0191] "Cosmetically acceptable" means that the subject in question is compatible with keratinous substrates such as skin and hair. For example, a "cosmetically acceptable carrier" refers to a carrier that is compatible with keratinous substrates such as skin and hair.
[0192] The term "hair care" is interchangeable with the term "hair treatment" for the purposes of this disclosure.
[0193] The terms "a", "an", and "the" are understood to include the plural as well as the singular. Therefore, the term "a mixture thereof" also relates to "a mixture thereof". Throughout the disclosure, the term "a mixture thereof" is used, which follows the enumeration of elements as shown in the following examples, where the letters AF represent elements: "one or more elements selected from A, B, C, D, E, F and mixtures thereof". The term "a mixture thereof" does not require that the mixture contains all of A, B, C, D, E, and F (although it may contain all of A, B, C, D, E, and F). Instead, it means a mixture that may contain any two or more of A, B, C, D, E, and F. In other words, it is equivalent to the phrase "one or more elements selected from A, B, C, D, E, F and mixtures of any two or more of A, B, C, D, E, and F"
[0194] Likewise, the term "salts thereof" also refers to "salts thereof". Therefore, when the present disclosure refers to "an element selected from A, B, C, D, E, F, salts thereof, and mixtures thereof", it means that it may include one or more of A, B, C, D, and F, may include one or more of salts of A, salts of B, salts of C, salts of D, salts of E, and salts of F, or may include a mixture of any two of A, B, C, D, E, F, salts of A, salts of B, salts of C, salts of D, salts of E, and salts of F.
[0195] Salts referred to throughout the disclosure may include salts with counterions such as alkali metal counterions, alkaline earth metal counterions, or ammonium counterions. However, this listing of counterions is non-limiting.
[0196] The expression "inclusive" with respect to a concentration range means that the limits of the range are included within the defined interval.
[0197] As used herein, "volatile" means having a flash point of less than about 100°C.
[0198] As used herein, "non-volatile" means having a flash point greater than about 100°C.
[0199] The term "polymer" as defined herein includes homopolymers and copolymers formed from at least two different types of monomers.
[0200] The term "INCI" is an abbreviation for the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients, which is a system of names for describing personal care ingredients provided by the International Nomenclature Committee of the Personal Care Products Association.
[0201] As used herein, all ranges provided are intended to include combinations of each specific range within a given range and sub-ranges between given ranges. Thus, a range of 1-5 specifically includes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, as well as sub-ranges such as 2-5, 3-5, 2-3, 2-4, 1-4, etc.
[0202] All components and elements explicitly recited in the present disclosure may be de-excluded from the claims. In other words, the compositions (nanoemulsions) of the present disclosure may be free of or substantially free of all components and elements explicitly recited throughout the present disclosure.
[0203] Some of the components recognized in each category may overlap. Where there may be overlap and the composition comprises both components (or the composition comprises more than two components overlapping), the overlapping compounds do not represent more than one component. For example, an aliphatic acid may be described as both a nonionic surfactant and an aliphatic compound. If a particular composition comprises both a nonionic surfactant and an aliphatic compound, a single aliphatic acid will act only as a nonionic surfactant or only as an aliphatic compound (a single aliphatic acid does not act as both a nonionic surfactant and an aliphatic compound).
[0204] All publications and patent applications cited in this specification are incorporated herein by reference and are for any and all purposes to the same extent as if each individual publication or patent application was specifically and individually indicated to be incorporated by reference. In the event of any inconsistency between the present disclosure and any publication or patent application incorporated herein by reference, the present disclosure controls.
