Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present disclosure generally relates to cosmetic, hair care, body care, and / or skin care products, and more particularly, to systems and methods for containing and holding such products. Background Art
[0002] Cosmetic, hair care, body care, and / or skin care products can be provided in several different containers and can be applied using several different methods. As an example, a lipstick or lip balm product can be in the form of a long tube, cylinder, square, rectangular, and / or rhombic prism, and other shapes disposed in a protective container. Such containers can allow the cosmetic substance to selectively advance to an extended position relative to the container for application by the user. The cosmetic substance can be a generally solid but relatively soft molded composition that can be inserted into a cavity of a retaining cup. If the container is inadvertently dropped or otherwise jostled, the cosmetic substance can become damaged, cracked, or otherwise detached from the retaining cup. In some examples, the retaining cup (or other features of the container) can include discrete retaining members in the form of hooks, nodules, or similar components that can be pressed into the cosmetic substance to attempt to prevent or otherwise limit movement of the cosmetic substance relative to the cup and the container during these inadvertent drops or impacts. However, these features can create local stress points that can ultimately deform the cosmetic substance or otherwise damage the cosmetic substance.
[0003] Accordingly, there is a need for improved attachments with improved functionality. Summary of the Invention
[0004] Examples within the scope of the present disclosure relate to a cosmetic product container and retaining mechanism that can include a cup for holding a cosmetic substance. The cup includes: a cup body having a first end, a second end, and an inner wall that forms a cup cavity; and a stepped retaining member disposed on the inner wall of the cup body and extending into the cup cavity. The stepped retaining member has a first width value that extends around a perimeter of the inner wall.
[0005] In some examples, the stepped retaining member includes a plurality of angled protrusions that extend inwardly into the cup cavity. In some of these examples, each of the angled protrusions can include a side surface and a bottom surface. The side surface can define a side surface area value, and the bottom surface can define a bottom surface area value. The ratio of the side surface area value to the bottom surface area value can be between approximately 4:1 and approximately 12:1.
[0006] In some examples, the cup may further include a second retaining member disposed on an inner sidewall of the cup body and extending into the cup cavity. The second retaining member may have a second width value extending around a perimeter of the inner sidewall. In these examples, the first width value may be greater than the second width value. In some of these forms, the second retaining member includes an elongate notch having a first end, a second end, and an undercut formed at its second end. The cup may further include a cup retaining member disposed on an outer surface of the cup body. The cup retaining member may be aligned with the second retaining member.
[0007] In one method, the cup may include a bottom plate member positioned at or near a stepped retaining member.
[0008] According to a second aspect, a cosmetic product container includes: an outer container having a first end and a second end and defining a container cavity; a cup adapted to be disposed at least partially within the container cavity; and a cosmetic substance having a first end, a second end, and an elongate body between the first and second ends. The cup includes: a cup body having a first end, a second end, and an inner sidewall forming a cup cavity; and a stepped retaining member disposed on the inner sidewall of the cup body and extending into the cup cavity. The stepped retaining member has a first width value extending around a perimeter of the inner sidewall. At least a portion of the elongate body of the cosmetic substance is disposed within the cup cavity. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

It will further be appreciated that certain actions and / or steps may be described or depicted in a particular order of occurrence, while those skilled in the art will understand that this particularity of sequence is not actually required. It will also be understood that the terms and expressions used herein have the ordinary technical meaning understood by those skilled in the art in accordance with such terms and expressions, except where different specific meanings have been otherwise set forth herein. Detailed Description
[0025] Generally speaking, in accordance with these various methods, there are provided cosmetic product containers and retaining mechanisms that adequately retain cosmetic substances during use and in the event of accidental dropping and / or impact. The methods described herein provide a secure retention of cosmetic substances while reducing or eliminating potentially harmful stress areas. Thus, the systems described herein can be used to contain and retain a multitude of cosmetic substances having varying degrees of material softness.
[0026] Turning to the figures, there is provided a cosmetic product 100 for containing and applying a cosmetic substance 101. The cosmetic product 100 includes a base 102, a track 108, an inner body 112, an outer shell 116, and a retaining mechanism 120. In the example shown, the cosmetic substance 101 is in the form of a lipstick or lip balm product. It will be appreciated that the cosmetic substance 101 can be any type of cosmetic, hair care, body care, and / or skin care product that can be applied to a user. Other examples are possible. In some of these examples, the cosmetic substance 101 can include potent or otherwise aggressive chemicals and / or ingredients, such as, for example, volatiles. The cosmetic substance 101 includes a first end 101a, a second end 101b, and an elongate body 101c extending therebetween along a longitudinal axis (“A”). Further, the cosmetic substance 101 defines an outer cross-sectional dimension (“DO”). In the example shown, the outer cross-sectional dimension DO is in the form of an outer diameter or circumference. However, other examples are possible.
[0027] Generally, the base 102 holds at least a portion of the components of the cosmetic product 100 within the base cavity 103. The base cavity 103 defines a ledge 104 formed on the inner surface and further includes a securing mechanism 105 formed on its outer surface. The securing mechanism 105 can be used to engage a portion of a cap (not shown) to hide the cosmetic substance 101 for storage purposes. Any number of suitable securing mechanisms 105 can be used, such as, for example, snap-fit couplings, friction-fit couplings, threaded connectors, etc. Other examples are possible.
[0028] The track 108 is at least partially disposed within the base cavity 103 and includes a first end 108a and a second end 108b and defines a channel 109. The inner body (which in some examples may be referred to as an outer container) 112 is at least partially disposed within the base cavity 103 and includes an inner surface 113 and a notch 114. The outer shell 116 is also at least partially disposed within the base cavity 103 and is provided to prevent a user from observing these components. The outer shell 116 includes a lip 117 that engages a portion of the inner body 112 to constrain movement in the direction along the longitudinal axis A. It will be appreciated that any one of the base 102, the track 108, the inner body 112, and / or the outer shell 116 may include any number of additional features and / or components to assist in using the cosmetic product 100, but for the sake of brevity, such features and / or components will not be discussed in substantial detail herein.
[0029] A retaining mechanism 120 is provided to securely hold the cosmetic substance 101. The retaining mechanism 120 includes a cup 122 having a cup body 124. The cup body 124 includes a first end 124a, a second end 124b, an inner sidewall 124c, and a cup cavity 125. Generally, the cosmetic substance 101 is at least partially disposed within the cup cavity 125. The cup body 124 further includes a cup retaining member 130. The cup body 124 can be formed from any number of desired materials.
[0030] Reference Figure 2 , the cup body 124 is adapted to be disposed within the inner body 112. When the cup body 124 is coupled with the inner body 112, the cup retaining member 130 is positioned within the notch 114 of the inner body 112 to prevent or otherwise limit relative movement between the inner body 112 and the cup body 124. In some of these examples, this coupling between the inner body 112 and the cup body 112 can exert an inwardly directed thrust or compressive force.
[0031] The cup body 124 further includes any number of stepped retaining members 134 disposed on the inner sidewall 124c. Each stepped retaining member 134 includes any number of angled protrusions or ridges 136 that extend into the inner cavity 125 in a stepped pattern. It will be appreciated that while each of the stepped retaining members 134 shown includes four angled protrusions 136, fewer or more than four angled protrusions 136 may be used to improve the retention of the cosmetic substance 101.
[0032] Each angled protrusion 136 includes a side surface 136a and a lower surface 136b that cooperate to form a step or undercut (see Figure 4 and Figure 10 ). Further, each angled protrusion 136 extends along the inner sidewall 124c a first dimension (width) value 134a. As shown in the figure, the first dimension value 134a is generally wide or elongate as the stepped retaining member 134 extends around approximately 20% or more of the inner periphery of the cup body 124. It will be appreciated that the first dimension value 134a may be modified to improve the retention performance of the cosmetic substance 101 having different material properties (such as softness, etc.).
[0033] As previously described, the lower surface 136b of each angled protrusion 136 forms an undercut region. The lower surface 136b has a relatively shallow depth or a shortened profile and thus does not extend as far or as much into the cup cavity 125 as prior designs. This arrangement is in contrast to existing systems that project or extend further into the cup cavity in an attempt to provide greater retention of the cosmetic substance. In the present application, the lower surface 136b is sized to be relatively shallow and have a less aggressive undercut depth to allow the cosmetic substance 101 formed of a softer composition to better flow into these areas below the lower surface 136b, while existing systems may create void areas that do not include any cosmetic substance. In previously used systems, such void areas can result in a reduction in the surface area contact between the cup and the cosmetic substance. Further, the cosmetic substance 101 formed of a softer composition may become structurally weakened due to a more aggressive undercut depth, and thus, the angled protrusions 136 described in the present disclosure can better maintain the structural integrity of the cosmetic substance 101.
[0034] Each side surface 136a of the angled protrusion 136 defines a side surface area value. Each side surface 136a can be generally concave as it has a curvature similar to or the same as the curvature of the curved inner wall 124c. Further, each lower surface 136b of the angled protrusion 136 defines a lower surface area value. In some examples, the ratio of the side surface area value to the lower surface area value is between approximately 4:1 and approximately 12:1. Other examples are possible.
[0035] In some examples, the cup body 124 may additionally include a bottom plate member 132 positioned at or near its first end 124a. The bottom plate member 132 can provide additional support for the first end 101a of the cosmetic substance 101. In some examples, the stepped retaining member 134 can extend to or terminate at the bottom plate member 132. In other examples, a gap (not shown) can be defined between the lowermost angled protrusion 136 of the stepped retaining member 134 and the bottom plate member 132. Further, in some examples, the bottom plate member 132 can include a plurality of through holes or channels 132a.
[0036] To assemble the cosmetic product 100, the cup body 124 is coupled to the inner body 112 to hold the cup body 124 in a relatively fixed position relative to the longitudinal axis A. However, in other examples, the cup body 124 may not be coupled to the inner body 112 at this time. Then, the first end 101a of the cosmetic substance 101 is inserted into the cup cavity 125. Since the outer cross-sectional dimension DO of the cosmetic substance 101 is similar to the inner cross-sectional dimension of the inner wall 124c, this insertion of the cosmetic substance 101 causes a portion of the elongated body 101c of the cosmetic substance 101 to contact the inner wall 124c in addition to contacting each stepped retaining member 134. Inserting the cosmetic substance 101 into the cup cavity 125 causes each angled protrusion 136 to be gently inserted into a portion of the cosmetic substance 101. As previously described, the wide ridges of the side surface 13a of the angled protrusion 136 create increased surface area contact and thus frictional contact with the cosmetic substance 101, and the cosmetic substance 101 can flow into the area below each lower surface 136b of the angled protrusion 136, thereby creating additional surface area contact with the lower surface 136b. These factors in combination with the multiple ridge steps allow for better fixation on the outer surface # of 101.
[0037] Accordingly, one or more stepped retaining members 134 apply a gentle retaining force to the elongate body 101c of the cosmetic substance 101. It will be appreciated that any number of characteristics, such as any number of desired dimensions of the stepped retaining members 134 and / or the material properties of the cosmetic substance 101, can be modified to produce a relatively gentle or relatively firm retaining force for the cosmetic substance 101 without causing excessive damage or deformation along the elongate body 101c due to significant surface area contact between the angled protrusions 136 and the elongate body 101c. In some methods, the material properties of the cosmetic substance 101 can dictate the number and dimensions of each stepped retaining member 134 to ensure that the cosmetic substance 101 is not damaged or otherwise deformed during insertion or use.
[0038] Reference Figure 2 , when assembling the retaining mechanism 120 within the inner body 112, the cup retaining member 130 (which projects outwardly from the notch 114 of the inner body 112 in some examples) is inserted into the channel 109 of the track 108. Then, the lip 117 of the outer shell 116 can be positioned over the inner body 112, and then these components can be inserted into the base cavity 103 of the base 102 until the outer shell 116 engages the ledge 104. In some examples, the outer shell 116, the track 108, and / or the inner body 112 can be fixed relative to the base 102, while the cup 122 can be rotatable relative thereto. Thus, in order to advance the cosmetic substance 101 such that it projects outwardly beyond the outer shell 116, the user can twist the base to cause the cup retaining member 130 to advance along the channel 109.
[0039] In some examples, the retaining mechanism 120 can include any number of optional features. For example, as Figure 2 and Figure 4 - 10 shown, the cup body 124 can additionally include any number of optional second retaining members 140 in the form of elongate ribs or notches that extend or project into the cup cavity 125. Each of the second retaining members 140 can include a first end 140a, a second end 140b, and an undercut 142 formed at the second end 140b. The width dimension value of the second retaining members 140 can be less than the width value 134a of the stepped retaining members 134. In some forms, the second retaining members 140 can be frustoconical relative to the stepped retaining members 134. Further, while the second retaining members 140 shown are provided as being generally vertically oriented (i.e., generally parallel to the longitudinal axis L), in some examples, the second retaining members 140 can be arranged in a helical or other configuration (not shown). Other arrangements are possible.
[0040] When inserting the cosmetic substance 101 into the cup cavity 125, the cosmetic substance 101 may additionally at least partially encapsulate the second retaining member 140, whereupon the second retaining member 140 may restrain or otherwise limit rotation of the cosmetic substance 101 relative to the cup cavity 125 about the longitudinal axis A. In other examples, the cosmetic substance 101 may be inserted into the cup cavity 125 via other methods, such as any number of backfill techniques. In any of these filling techniques, the retaining member 140 restrains or otherwise limits rotation of the cosmetic substance 101.
[0041] It will be appreciated that although the second retaining members 140 are shown in the figures, these second retaining members 140 are merely optional features and are not necessary for the cup 122 to hold the cosmetic substance 101. Further, it will be appreciated that although the second retaining members 140 are oriented in a generally parallel direction relative to the longitudinal axis A, in some arrangements, any number of second retaining members 140 may be oriented in a non-parallel direction relative to the longitudinal axis A (e.g., any number of second retaining members 140 may form a helix or spiral around the inner sidewall 124c of the cup body 124). Other arrangements are possible.
[0042] It will also be appreciated that the retaining mechanism 120 may be provided in any number of different shapes and / or configurations. As a non-limiting alternative example, Figure 11 - 14 alternative retaining mechanisms 220, 320 that may be incorporated into the cosmetic product 100 are shown. These retaining mechanisms 220, 320 include features similar to those of the retaining mechanism 120 and are thus given reference numerals with the same two-digit suffix. For the sake of brevity, such components will not be described in further detail. In these examples, the retaining mechanisms 220, 320 may be used in conjunction with backfill manufacturing methods. More specifically, the bottom plate members 232, 332 may include main openings 232a, 332a, which in the examples shown are approximately centered on the bottom plate members 232, 332 to allow the cosmetic substance 101 to be filled into the cup cavities 225, 325. In other examples, the main openings 232a, 332a may not be centered.
[0043] In Figure 11 and Figure 12 the exemplary retaining mechanism 220 shown, the angled protrusions 236 positioned adjacent to the bottom plate member 232 include angled side surfaces 236a, while the remaining angled protrusions 236 may have side surfaces 236a oriented in different ways. In the example shown, the additional angled protrusions 236 have generally perpendicular side surfaces 236a that are approximately parallel to the longitudinal axis L. Other arrangements are possible.
[0044] As previously described, the retention mechanisms described herein may include any number of stepped surfaces or angled protrusions. In the exemplary retention mechanism 320 shown in Figure 13 and Figure 14 , the retention member 334 is a generally smooth member that does not include additional stepped surfaces. More specifically, some formulations of the cosmetic substance 101 may not require additional stepped surfaces to adequately retain the cosmetic substance 101, and thus this retention mechanism 320 may be used to reduce manufacturing costs and simplify production.
[0045] In such a configuration, the retention mechanisms and products described herein securely retain the cosmetic substance without damaging its parts. Compared to traditional designs, the retention mechanism advantageously increases the surface area of shear contact with the cosmetic substance 101, thereby increasing friction to assist in retaining the cosmetic substance 101 within the cup cavity 125 during use, dropping, and / or other accidental movement. Further, the retention mechanisms and products currently described do not include additional stress concentration areas that could otherwise cause the cosmetic substance to break, stretch, or otherwise be damaged during accidental movement. The retention mechanisms described herein may also provide additional stability to protect the cosmetic substance in the event of a drop or collision. More specifically, the retention mechanism may maintain the alignment of the cosmetic substance such that it does not become misaligned after dropping or colliding. Such misalignment may cause the cosmetic substance to contact the interior portions of the product during upward application, which may in turn damage or soil the cosmetic substance.
