Description

[0001] Related Applications

[0002] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 618,452, filed on January 8, 2024, entitled TELEVISION MOUNT WITH HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT FEATURE, the entire content of which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. Technical Field

[0003] The present invention relates to mounting devices for televisions, and more particularly, to mounting devices for attaching flat-panel televisions and related equipment to a wall. Background Art

[0004] As flat-panel televisions and monitors have become increasingly popular, there has been a growing need to mount them to a wall to avoid using furniture to support the equipment, which would take up floor space. Additionally, for optimal viewing, sound, and aesthetic reasons, it is often desirable to more precisely position the television. For these purposes, various types of mounting devices have been developed. For example, U.S. Patent No. 8,693,172 discloses a full-motion mounting device for attaching a television to a wall, which is owned by the owner of the present invention and is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. This mounting device enables the television to tilt, pivot left and right, and move closer to or farther away from the wall.

[0005] However, a drawback of existing full-motion television mounting devices is that vertical height adjustment of the television can only be achieved when the television is attached to the mounting device. This is typically accomplished through two separate adjustments. This results in additional installation time and limits the flexibility of the installation.

[0036] Figures 1 to 3Depicted therein is a television mounting device 20 according to an embodiment of the present invention. A mounting device 20 for mounting a display screen 148 (such as a television or a monitor) to a wall 150 generally includes a display screen engaging assembly 22, a support assembly 23 in the form of an articulated arm assembly 24, and a wall engaging assembly 26. It will be understood that the articulated arm assembly 24 can be replaced with any suitable arm assembly, such as a one-piece single arm or multiple articulated arms, while still remaining within the scope of the present invention. For a non-limiting example, the support assembly 23 can be replaced with, for example, a scissor extension mechanism as disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 8,508,918 owned by the assignee of the present application and incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.

[0037] The display screen engaging assembly 22 generally includes a central column 28 and a display screen attachment assembly 29 in the form of uprights 30, 32 and crossbars 34, 36. It will be understood that the display screen attachment assembly 29 can be replaced with any structure suitable for attaching a television or a monitor, such as a plate having appropriate apertures arranged in a standard VESA pattern.

[0038] As Figure 3 depicted therein, the support assembly 23 has a first end 25 coupled to the wall engagement member 26 and a second end 27 coupled to the display screen engagement member 22. When the support assembly 23 is implemented as an articulated arm assembly 24, the assembly generally includes inner arms 38, 40, outer arms 42, and an angled head assembly 44. The wall engagement member 26 generally includes a wall bracket 46 that can be attached to the wall 150 by fasteners (not depicted) and a decorative cover 48. The inner arms 38, 40 are coupled to the wall engagement member 26 by a pivot 50 and to the outer arms 42 by a pivot 52. The outer arms 42 are coupled to the angled head assembly 44 by a pivot 54.

[0039] In Figures 4 to 6 and Figure 9 depicted therein is the central column 28 of the display screen engaging assembly 22, and the central column 28 of the display screen engaging assembly 22 generally includes a guide member 56, a coupling plate 58, a latch assembly 60, a height adjustment assembly 62, and a fixing member 64. The guide member 56 generally includes a back plate 66 having side portions 68, 70 with a C-shaped cross-section. The coupling plate 58 generally includes a body portion 72 and bushings 74, 76. As Figure 5 depicted therein, the bushings 74, 76 are slidably received in the C-shaped side portions 68, 70 such that the coupling plate 58 can slide vertically in a recess 78 defined by the guide channel 56.

[0040] In Figure 2 , Figure 4 , Figure 5 and Figure 7The latch assembly 60 is depicted, and the latch assembly 60 generally includes a guide housing 80, a latch 82, a biasing spring 84, and a pull strap 86. The pull strap 86 may be coupled to an optional pull handle 88 guided by a guide shaft 90. The guide housing 80 is fixed to the coupling plate 58. The guide housing 80 defines grooves 92, 94, and a spring recess 96. The latch 82 has laterally projecting flanges 98, 100, latch projections 102, 104, and a spring tab 106. The laterally projecting flanges 98, 100 are slidably received in the grooves 92, 94, and the biasing spring 84 is received in the spring recess 96 and abuts against the spring tab 106 such that the latch 82 is biased upward relative to the guide housing 80. The latch projections 102, 104 have tapered upper edges 108, 110. The pull strap 86 is coupled to the latch 82 by a connector 111 and may be pulled downward to move the latch 82 downward against the bias of the biasing spring 84.

[0041] The height adjustment assembly 62 generally includes a drive screw 112 and a nut 114. The drive screw 112 is held in the cross bar 36 such that rotation of the drive screw 112 via the head 116 causes the drive screw 112 to rotate but not translate. The nut 114 is fixed to the coupling plate 58 and threaded onto the drive screw 112 such that the nut 114 moves along the drive screw 112 as the drive screw 112 rotates, thereby causing the coupling plate 58 to slide upward or downward in the recess 78 depending on the direction of rotation.

[0042] As Figure 8 depicted in the exploded view of, the tilt head assembly 44 generally includes a pivot bracket 118, a rear slider 120, a tilt guide 122, a front slider 124, and a housing 126. The tilt guide 122 is slidably sandwiched between the rear slider 120 and the front slider 124 such that the tilt guide 122 can slide between the rear slider 120 and the front slider 124 along the curved front surface 128 and the rear surface 130. The rear slider 120, the tilt guide 122, and the front slider 124 are contained within the housing 126, and the housing 126 is attached to the pivot bracket 118. The tilt head assembly 44 is pivotally attached to the outer arm 42 by a pivot 54. A push block 132 and a friction control 134 are provided to increase or remove friction in the sliding movement of the tilt guide 122 as needed. A roller assembly 136 provides rolling movement adjustment for this assembly to effect an offset of the display screen 148 (i.e., change the orientation of the edge relative to the floor). As Figure 4 depicted in, the tilt head assembly 44 may be removably coupled to the display screen engagement member 22, wherein the top edge 138 of the tilt guide 122 fits behind the fixed member 64, and the bottom edge 140 of the tilt guide 122 fits behind the latch 82.

[0043] The upright posts 30, 32 can selectively slide along the crossbars 34, 36 to adjust the connection with different attachment hole patterns of the display screen 148. Marks 142 (such as 200mm, 300mm, 400mm, etc.) can be set on the crossbars 34, 36 to facilitate positioning, so as to match the VESA hole pattern on the display screen. The display screen 148 can be attached to the display screen engaging member 22 through fasteners (not depicted) passing through the apertures 144 in the upright posts 30, 32.

[0044] In use, the wall engaging assembly 26 having the attached articulated arm assembly 24 and tilt head assembly 44 can be attached to the wall 150 through suitable fasteners (not depicted) passing through the apertures 146. The display screen engaging member 22 can be adjusted to a suitable width by sliding the upright posts 30, 32 along the crossbars 34, 36, and attached to the rear of the display screen 148 through fasteners (not depicted) passing through the apertures 144 in the upright posts 30, 31. Then, the display screen engaging member 22 and the display screen 148 can be coupled to the tilt head assembly 44 by pushing the fixing member 64 above the top edge 138 of the tilt guide 122. Then, the display screen 148 and the display screen engaging member 22 can be pushed towards the tilt head assembly 44, causing the bottom edge 140 of the tilt guide 122 to move along the tapered upper edges 108, 110 of the latch projections 102, 104, thereby pushing the latch 82 downward against the bias of the biasing spring 84. Once the bottom edge 140 of the tilt guide 122 passes over the latch projections 102, 104, the latch 82 will be pushed upward by the biasing spring 84, such that the bottom edge 140 remains behind the latch 82, thereby fixing the display screen engaging member 22 to the tilt head assembly 44. Then, the height of the display screen 148 and the display screen engaging member 22 relative to the floor and the rest of the mounting device 20 can be adjusted by rotating the drive screw 112 to drive the coupling plate 58 upward or downward in the recess 78 according to the rotation direction, thereby changing the height of the display screen engaging member 22 and the display screen 148 relative to the floor and the wall engaging assembly 26.

[0045] When it is necessary to unlock the display screen engaging member 22 and the display screen 148 from the rest of the mounting device, the pull strap 86 can be pulled downward to move the latch 82 downward, thereby releasing the bottom edge 140 of the tilt guide 122. Then, the display screen 148 and the display screen engaging member 22 can be lifted upward to disconnect the engagement.

[0046] As Figure 1 and Figure 10As depicted, the tilt guide 122 can be configured to define a virtual horizontal tilt axis X-X that is positioned a distance Y in front of the display engagement member 22. The virtual horizontal tilt axis X-X can enable the display screen 148 attached to the display engagement member 22 to maintain a tilted position without adding excessive friction via the friction control member 134, thereby enhancing usability. As Figure 10 depicted, this can be achieved by conforming the curvature of the curved front surface 128 and the rear surface 130 of the tilt guide 122 to the circumference of a circle 152 having a center 154 at the desired position of the tilt axis X-X.

[0047] It will be understood that other tilt head devices can be provided within the scope of the present invention. For example, as Figures 11 to 17 depicted, the tilt head assembly 44 can be replaced with a tilt head assembly 156. As Figure 12 depicted, the tilt head assembly 156 generally includes a pivot connection bracket 158 having projecting side portions 160, 162 and a tilt guide bracket 164. The projecting side portions 160, 162 respectively carry followers 166, 168, 170, 172 that are fixed in place relative to each other and the projecting side portions 160, 162. The pivot connection bracket 158 is pivotally coupled to the outer arm 42 by a pivot 54 as previously described.

[0048] The tilt guide bracket 164 defines guide slots 174, 176, 178, 180 in which the followers 166, 168, 170, 172 respectively slide or roll. As Figure 13 depicted, the guide slots 174, 176, 178, 180 can be disposed along the circumference of a circle 182 having a center 184 that coincides with the virtual axis X-X. As depicted in the local right side view, the guide slots 174, 176 are symmetric and their radii of curvature are centered on the center 184. The guide slots 174, 176 will enable the followers 166, 168 to slide thereon, thereby enabling the tilt guide bracket 164, the columns 30, 32, and the attached display screen 148 to tilt about the virtual tilt axis X-X, which will remain stationary.

[0049] In Figures 14 to 17 depicted are other examples of different slot configurations. In Figure 14 and Figure 15 the guide slots 174, 176 are bow-shaped but have different lengths and are not symmetrically disposed. By as Figure 15In the configuration depicted, the tilt guide bracket 164, the columns 30, 32, and the attached display screen 148 will tilt about an instantaneous center in accordance with well-known principles of machine kinematics. The followers 166, 168 are positioned a fixed distance apart and are substantially fixed in place relative to the protruding side portions 160, 162 and the outer arm 42. Thus, the instantaneous center of the tilting motion of the tilt guide bracket 164 will lie within the tilting motion range of the tilt guide bracket 164 along a line 186 perpendicular to the midpoint of a line 188 drawn between the relative positions of the followers 166, 168 in the guide slots 174, 176. As Figure 15 depicted in, the region 190 where the line 186 intersects will mark the approximate location of the instantaneous center. The virtual tilt axis X-X can be conceived as continuously shifting during the tilting motion of the tilt guide bracket 164 and being located at a point within the region 190.

[0050] Similarly, Figure 16 straight guide slots 174, 176 are depicted, and Figure 17 bowed guide slots 174, 176 are depicted, but curving in a direction opposite to that of the Figure 13 guide slots 174, 176. In these cases, the tilt guide bracket 164 will tilt about an instantaneous center disposed within the region 190.

[0051] Accordingly, it will be understood that the guide slots 174, 176, 178, 180 can be of almost any shape or geometry to effect the tilting motion of the tilt guide bracket 164 about the virtual tilt axis X-X, and that the virtual tilt axis X-X can be achieved by shifting the instantaneous center. It will further be understood that the geometry of the guide slots 174, 176, 178, 180 can be such as to provide a greater or lesser tilt range (e.g., 5 degrees to 15 degrees) at the top of the display screen engagement member 22 relative to the bottom.

[0052] Accordingly, the described embodiment provides a convenient method for adjusting the height of a wall-mounted television or monitor near the floor by a single adjustment. The solution can be applied to any mounting device, whether or not the mounting device is provided with an arm assembly capable of pivoting and whether or not the mounting device is provided with a tilting function.
