Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to ostomy appliances, in particular to drainable ostomy appliances, and more particularly to ostomy appliances with a drain tube that can be opened and resealed by a user. Background Art

[0002] Ostomy appliances are used by people with stomas to capture stoma output flowing from the stoma so that it can be disposed of conveniently and hygienically. To reduce the number of times a person needs to replace an ostomy appliance, drainable (or "open") ostomy appliances have been developed that have a drain tube that can be opened to allow the contents of the ostomy appliance to be disposed of. The drain tube can then be resealed to allow continued use of the ostomy appliance, which in turn saves costs and is more convenient for the user and more environmentally friendly.

[0003] However, the addition of drains, as described above, can lead to several issues with the use of ostomy appliances. For example, if the user fails to reseal the drain securely, the likelihood of leakage of the ostomy appliance contents through the drain increases, leading to hygienic risks, unpleasant odors, and discomfort and embarrassment for the user. Furthermore, over repeated use, the opposing inner walls of the drain can become wet. This makes opening the drain more difficult, as the flexible plastic material typically used tends to stick to itself when wet.

[0004] To overcome these issues, drainable ostomy appliances have been developed that incorporate one or more stretching strips on the drain tube to provide a rigid structure. The drain tube can then be folded around the stretching strips, which improves the tube's resealability. Stretching strips can also be used to facilitate opening the drain tube. For example, in US Pat. No. 8,672,907 B2, a pair of stretching strips are provided with an inherent curvature to separate the drain tube. However, this inherent curvature adds additional size to the drain tube, which can be uncomfortable for the user.

[0005] In a different example, US Pat. No. 8,672,907 B2 discloses a small cutout / notch provided in the stretcher strip and also provided at a corresponding location on the drain tube to allow the user to insert their finger into the drain tube to open it. However, this can be unpleasant for the user and may also pose a hygiene risk, as the drain tube is typically not clean after a cycle of use, and even upon first use, they need to open the drain tube to allow stoma output to flow out of the drain tube, and remove their finger before the liquid in the stoma output flows onto their finger, which can be difficult.

[0006] In another example, US2019 / 0328572A1 discloses a drain tube having fold lines extending axially and laterally covering one side of the drain tube to guide the opening and closing of the drain tube. In one embodiment, the axially extending fold lines are inclined so that they converge at the distal end of the drain tube. However, this can be unpleasant for the user because there is extra bulk in the drain tube due to the additional rigidity added to the entire side of the drain tube. Furthermore, this extra bulk means that the drain tube is less suitable for folding onto itself, so an optional reinforcement is provided on the other side of the fold line at the distal end of the drain tube to allow the flexible drain tube material to be folded around something. Of course, this optional reinforcement further increases the bulk of the drain tube, exacerbating any discomfort caused by the size of the drain tube.

[0007] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an ostomy appliance which at least partially solves the above-mentioned problems. Summary of the Invention

[0008] In summary, the present invention relates to a stretcher strip incorporating a notch. The stretcher strip may include a transverse edge. The notch may span at least half of the transverse edge. The stretcher strip may be incorporated into a drain tube of an ostomy appliance. The ostomy appliance may include a bag and a drain tube. The drain tube may be formed from two walls, such as a proximal wall and a distal wall. The two walls may be attached to each other along the side edges of the drain tube to define a passage therebetween. The drain tube may include one or more stretcher strips. The one or more stretcher strips may be configured to separate the two walls of the drain tube when compressed in a direction perpendicular to the side edges of the drain tube. At least one of the one or more stretcher strips may be a first stretcher strip. The first stretcher strip may be a stretcher strip as described above, i.e., it may include a notch. The first stretcher strip may include an upper edge and a lower edge, each of which may be substantially perpendicular to the side edges of the drain tube. The lower edge may be the transverse edge described above. Thus, the transverse edge may be substantially perpendicular to the side edges of the drain tube.

[0009] According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided an ostomy appliance comprising a bag and a drain tube, the drain tube being formed by two walls attached to each other along two side edges of the drain tube to define a channel therebetween, the drain tube comprising one or more stretching strips, the one or more stretching strips being configured to separate the two walls of the drain tube when compressed in a direction perpendicular to the two side edges of the drain tube, wherein a stretching strip of the one or more stretching strips comprises a transverse edge substantially perpendicular to the two side edges of the drain tube, and the transverse edge comprises a notch spanning at least half of the transverse edge.

[0010] The inventors have discovered that providing a gap spanning at least half the width of the stretcher strip imparts mechanical properties to the stretcher strip that enable it to effectively separate the walls of the drain tube and open the drain tube when compressed. Because the gap is located along one lateral edge, this side of the stretcher strip is weaker and has more room to flex than the other lateral edge. Consequently, when compressed, the stretcher strip exhibits a varying curvature parallel to the lateral edges, which causes the two walls to separate. Furthermore, once compression is released, the stretcher strip is undamaged and returns to its flattened shape, allowing for effective closure of the drain tube without adding excess bulk to the ostomy appliance.

[0011] Each of the one or more stretching strips may be planar. Each of the one or more stretching strips may be substantially flat (when idle). Each of the one or more stretching strips may have an inherent curvature that is approximately zero (when idle). Each of the one or more stretching strips may have an inherent curvature that is approximately zero when measured in any plane perpendicular to the wall of the drainage tube. Therefore, when idle, that is, in the absence of a compressive force perpendicular to the wall of the drainage tube, the stretching strips will not bend and therefore will not protrude out of the plane of the wall, thereby not causing potential discomfort and inconvenience to the user during use.

[0012] The drain tube can have a width measured between the side edges of the drain tube. Each of the one or more stretching strips can have a width that is substantially parallel to the width of the drain tube. The width of the drain tube can be the same as or substantially the same as the width of the stretching strip. Thus, the stretching strip can be used to effectively seal the drain tube because it spans the entire width of the drain tube.

[0013] Each of the one or more stretching strips may have two side edges corresponding to the two side edges of the drainage tube. Each of the one or more stretching strips may have a length defined parallel to its two side edges. The length of the stretching strip may be the same as the length of the side edges. Each of the one or more stretching strips may have an upper edge and a lower edge. Thus, each of the one or more stretching strips may be substantially rectangular.

[0014] Each of the one or more stretching strips can be more rigid than the wall of the drain tube. Each of the one or more stretching strips can comprise a strip of flexible material attached to the wall of the drain tube. Each of the one or more stretching strips can be formed from a flexible plastic material, such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polystyrene. Each wall can be formed from a flexible plastic material, such as low-density polyethylene (LDPE) or ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA). Thus, the stretching strips provide increased resilience to the drain tube and can be used to effectively open and seal the drain tube.

[0015] The drain tube can include a proximal end for receiving ostomy output from the ostomy bag. The distal end can be located at an end of the drain tube opposite the proximal end when the drain tube is in an open or "deployed" configuration. The length of the drain tube can be measured between the proximal and distal ends of the drain tube. A stretching strip can be disposed at the distal end of the drain tube. A notch can be provided in the distal transverse edge. The distal transverse edge can be disposed at the distal end of the drain tube so that the stretching strip can be used to separate the walls of the drain tube at the end of the drain tube to better control the emptying of the bag.

[0016] The width of the notch may be parallel to the lateral edges. The length of the notch may be perpendicular to its width. The length of the notch may be in a plane defined by the stretching strip. The aspect ratio (width:length) of the notch is at least 5:1, at least 7:1, at least 10:1 or at least 12:1. The aspect ratio (width:length) of the notch may be no more than 15:1, no more than 12:1, no more than 10:1 or no more than 7:1. Preferably, the aspect ratio (width:length) of the notch is 12:1. Thus, the notch has an aspect ratio that optimizes the mechanical properties of the stretching strip to help open the drain without significant risk of damaging the stretching strip during bending.

[0017] The notch can be curved / curved. The notch can be arc-shaped. The shape of the notch can be defined by an arc. The radius of curvature of the arc can be greater than the width of the notch. The radius of curvature of the arc can be greater than the width of the stretching strip, for example, approximately 50% greater than the width of the stretching strip. The radius of curvature of the arc can be greater than the width of the drain tube. Thus, the arc-shaped shape helps ensure that the notch deforms predictably to open the drain tube.

[0018] The length of the stretching strip can be parallel to the length of the notch. The length of the notch can be less than half, one-third, or one-quarter the length of the stretching strip. The length of the notch can be at least one-fifth or at least one-quarter the length of the stretching strip. Preferably, the length of the notch is approximately one-quarter the length of the stretching strip. Thus, the length of the notch is selected to provide sufficient stretching strip deformation without damaging the stretching strip.

[0019] The notch may span at least 40%, at least 50%, at least 60%, or at least 80% of the transverse edge. The notch may span no more than 95%, no more than 90%, no more than 80%, or no more than 60% of the transverse edge. Preferably, the notch may span no more than 90% of the transverse edge, for example, the notch may span between 60% and 90% of the transverse edge. The notch may span 85% of the transverse edge. Thus, a portion of the transverse edge is free of notches, ensuring that the stretching strip retains some mechanical strength to support deformation and opening of the drainage tube.

[0020] The notch may be positioned near the midpoint along the transverse edge. Preferably, the notch is positioned at the midpoint along the transverse edge. The apex of the notch arc may be positioned at or near the midpoint along the transverse edge. The notch may be symmetrical about the centerline of the expansion strip (a centerline extending perpendicular to the transverse edge). Thus, the notch is centrally positioned to ensure uniform and predictable deformation of the drainage tube during the opening process.

[0021] The portion of the transverse edge adjacent to the two side edges may not contain notches. Thus, compressing the stretch strip is easier.

[0022] The distal end of the drain tube can be straight. The notch can expose an end region at the distal end of the drain tube. The end region may not be directly attached to the one or more stretching straps. Thus, the end region provides further variation in the mechanical strength of the various portions of the drain tube, which increases the likelihood of the drain tube wall separating during compression of the stretching straps.

[0023] The drain tube may have a closed configuration, wherein stoma output is prohibited from passing through the drain tube. The drain tube may be rolled and / or folded in the closed configuration. The drain tube may define a tortuous passage in the closed configuration. The drain tube may be folded around the or each stretching strip in the closed configuration. Each stretching strip may define the position and orientation of one or more folds of the drain tube. The drain tube may be folded around one or more fold lines or folds. The one or more folds may close the tortuous passage. Therefore, the one or more stretching strips may allow the drain tube to be effectively sealed closed.

[0024] The drain tube may have an open configuration, wherein stoma output is allowed to pass through the drain tube. In the open configuration, the drain tube can be unfolded, for example, unwound and unfolded. The drain tube may define a substantially linear channel in the open configuration. Thus, the drain tube can be placed in the open configuration to allow the contents of the bag to be drained.

[0025] The bag may be formed of two walls that are sealed together around their perimeter. The two walls of the bag may be formed of the same material as the corresponding two walls of the drainage tube (i.e., the proximal wall and the distal wall). The two walls of the bag may include the proximal wall and the distal wall of the drainage tube. Thus, the bag and the drainage tube may be formed integrally. The proximal wall is intended to be closest to the user's body during use. The distal wall may be located on the side of the bag and / or drainage tube opposite the proximal wall.

[0026] The first stretching strip may be arranged on the proximal wall of the drainage tube. The first stretching strip may be the only stretching strip arranged on the proximal wall of the drainage tube. The one or more stretching strips may include a second stretching strip. The second stretching strip may be arranged on the distal wall. The second stretching strip may be the only stretching strip arranged on the distal wall of the drainage tube. A lateral gap may be provided between the upper edge of the first stretching strip and the lower edge of the second stretching strip. The lateral gap may be at least 1 mm, at least 2 mm, at least 3 mm, at least 4 mm or at least 5 mm. The lateral gap may be sized to allow a fold to be formed in the drainage tube between the first and second stretching strips. Thus, the volume of the drainage tube is minimized without compromising performance.

[0027] The bag may include a closure mechanism configured to retain the drainage tube in a closed configuration. The closure mechanism may include one or more fastening elements. The one or more fastening elements may include a bag fastening element disposed on the bag. The bag fastening element may be positioned adjacent to the drainage tube. The bag fastening element may be configured to attach to the drainage tube to retain it in a closed configuration. The bag fastening element may be disposed on the distal wall. Thus, the bag fastening element is easily accessible to a user.

[0028] In the closed configuration, the drain tube can be folded at least three times around the first stretch strip, thereby creating a fluid-tight seal by folding the drain tube.

[0029] The closure mechanism may include a closure flap. The closure flap may be located on the bag near the drainage tube. The closure flap may be disposed on the distal wall. The closure flap may be configured to cover the drainage tube when the drainage tube is in the closed configuration. The bag securing element may be disposed on the closure flap. Thus, the closure flap may be used to more securely seal the drainage tube.

[0030] The one or more fastening elements may include a drain tube fastening element disposed on the drain tube. The drain tube fastening element may be positioned near the proximal end of the drain tube. The drain tube fastening element may be configured to fasten to the bag to retain the drain tube in a closed configuration. Thus, the drain tube may be retained in the closed configuration by the fastening element located on the drain tube.

[0031] The one or more fastening elements may include two fastening elements configured to fasten to each other. The two fastening elements may include corresponding complementary fastening surfaces. The fastening surfaces may include any of the following: a hook and loop fastener; a hook and hook fastener; and a mushroom head fastener. As described above, the two fastening elements may include a bag fastening element and a drainage tube fastening element.

[0032] The drainage tube may be located at the bottom of the ostomy appliance. The ostomy bag may include a stoma inlet configured to allow stoma output from the user's stoma to enter the bag. The proximal wall may include a stoma inlet. The stoma inlet may be located near the top of the ostomy appliance. During use, the bottom of the ostomy appliance may be located at or near the lowest point of the ostomy appliance. Stoma output stored in the bag may flow out of the drainage tube under the action of gravity. The top of the ostomy appliance may be located at or near the end of the ostomy appliance opposite the bottom.

[0033] The bag may include an adhesive ring configured to attach the bag to the user's body. The adhesive ring may be generally annular and disposed around the stoma entrance. The adhesive ring may be disposed on the proximal wall. The adhesive ring may be formed from a moldable adhesive material, such as a hydrocolloid adhesive. The adhesive ring may be provided with a release liner to protect the adhesive ring prior to use.

[0034] The bag may include a vent configured to allow gas in the bag to escape the bag. The vent may be provided in a distal wall of the bag. The vent may be provided to align with the stoma entrance.

[0035] The width of each of the one or more stretching strips may be substantially the same. The length of each of the one or more stretching strips may be substantially the same. This helps ensure a better sealing effect.

[0036] The first and second support strips may have equal widths. The first and second support strips may have equal lengths. The second support strip may not include a line of weakness. Alternatively, the second support strip may include one line of weakness, or at least two lines of weakness, which may have any of the optional features described above. Thus, the first and second support strips can be used to effectively seal the drainage tube because they have the same length and width.

[0037] The lateral gaps may be free of expansion strips. Thus, the drain tube may be folded so that the first expansion strip and the second expansion strip overlap one another to form a tighter seal when the drain tube is in the closed configuration.

[0038] The one or more stretching strips may include a line of weakness. One or more of the one or more stretching strips may each include a line of weakness. The first stretching strip may include a line of weakness. If the first stretching strip includes a line of weakness, it may not include the notch described above.

[0039] The second stretching strip may have substantially constant mechanical properties. The second stretching strip may not include a weakening line. Thus, the second stretching strip has a constant stiffness and is therefore capable of securely sealing the drainage tube.

[0040] If there are two or more stretching strips, the widths of at least two of the stretching strips may be unequal. The drain tube may include a narrow stretching strip having a width that is smaller than the first stretching strip. The width of the narrow stretching strip may be approximately 10-30% smaller than the width of the first stretching strip. The width of each of the one or more stretching strips may be no greater than the width of the drain tube. Two of the two or more stretching strips may each be arranged at the distal end of the drain tube. The narrow stretching strip may be arranged at the distal end of the drain tube. The narrow stretching strip may be arranged on the distal wall of the drain tube. The narrow stretching strip may be the second stretching strip or the third stretching strip, or it may be a weakened stretching strip (see below), depending on the configuration of the drain tube. Therefore, unequal widths can be used to increase the propensity of the drain tube to open because one bends before the other during compression.

[0041] The ostomy appliance may comprise only the first and second stretcher strips (ie the ostomy appliance may not comprise further stretcher strips).

[0042] The one or more stretch strips may include weakened stretch strips comprising one or more lines of weakness.

[0043] Where two or more stretcher straps are present, the weakened stretcher strap may be the second stretcher strap.

[0044] The ostomy appliance may comprise three or more stretcher strips. Where there are three or more stretcher strips, the weakened stretcher strip may be the third stretcher strip.

[0045] The weakened stretch strip may have any one or more of the features of one or more stretch strips, the first stretch strip, and / or the second stretch strip as described above. Where a stretch strip includes a line of weakness, it may be referred to as a weakened stretch strip, or simply a stretch strip, which are interchangeable. The weakened stretch strip may have side edges, an upper edge, and a lower edge. The transverse edge may be the lower edge of the weakened stretch strip.

[0046] The weakened stretch strip may be positioned near the distal end of the drain tube. The weakened stretch strip may be positioned on a side of the drain tube opposite the first stretch strip. The weakened stretch strip may be positioned on a distal wall of the ostomy appliance.

[0047] The weakened stretcher strip may be located on the proximal wall of the ostomy appliance, particularly where the weakened stretcher strip is the first stretcher strip. A narrow stretcher strip may be provided on the distal wall and a weakened stretcher strip on the proximal wall.

[0048] The or each weakening line may comprise a groove. Each strut may comprise an outer surface. The outer surface may be spaced apart from the two walls of the drainage tube. Each groove may be formed in the outer surface of the weakened strut. Thus, each groove allows the weakened strut to bend more easily without breaking, while reducing the risk of crushing damage to the drainage tube wall. Each groove may have a width measured perpendicular to the respective weakening line. The width of each groove may be approximately 0.25 mm.

[0049] Each line of weakness or the lines of weakness may comprise one or more perforations.

[0050] Each weakening line or the weakening lines may be at least partially straight, or they may be substantially straight, or completely straight. Thus, the weakening lines have a simple but effective straight shape.

[0051] The entirety of any one or more of the one or more stretching strips may be attached to the wall of the drain tube. Thus, the wall matches the shape of each such stretching strip to help ensure that it can be separated from the other wall.

[0052] The one or more lines of weakness may include a longitudinal line of weakness that spans a majority of the way through the weakened stretch strip, or more preferably, spans all the way from the upper edge to the lower edge of the weakened stretch strip. Thus, the weakened stretch strip can more effectively and predictably separate the walls of the drain tube.

[0053] The one or more lines of weakness may comprise two converging lines of weakness. The first stretching strip may comprise two converging lines of weakness.

[0054] According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided an ostomy appliance comprising a bag and a drain tube, the drain tube being formed of a proximal wall and a distal wall attached to each other along two side edges of the drain tube to define a passage therebetween, the drain tube comprising a distal end for outputting stoma effluent from the bag, the drain tube comprising two or more stretching strips configured to separate the two walls of the drain tube when compressed in a direction perpendicular to the side edges of the drain tube; wherein a first stretching strip comprises an upper edge and a lower edge, both perpendicular to the side edges, and two converging lines of weakness spanning between the upper edge and the lower edge; wherein the first stretching strip is disposed on the proximal wall at the distal end of the drain tube and the second stretching strip is disposed on the distal wall; and wherein a longitudinal gap is provided between the upper edge of the first stretching strip and the lower edge of the second stretching strip. The lateral gap may provide the longitudinal gap.

[0055] The inventors have discovered that by providing converging lines of weakness, the weakened stretcher strips are provided with mechanical properties that enable them to effectively separate the walls of the drain tube when compressed, thereby opening the drain tube. This is because the converging lines create an imbalance, as the weakened stretcher strips bend at different angles when compressed, forcing the two walls apart.

[0056] Each converging line of weakness can be a longitudinal line of weakness. Thus, the one or more lines of weakness can include two converging longitudinal lines of weakness. The converging lines of weakness can be arranged to meet at a point that is not on the weakened strut strip. Thus, the converging lines of weakness are converging but do not meet on the weakened strut strip. This helps ensure that there is always a gap between the converging lines of weakness, making it easier for the weakened strut strip to bend out of the plane of the drain tube.

[0057] The two converging lines of weakness may be separated by at least one-quarter or at least one-third of the width of the drain tube. Preferably, the two converging lines of weakness may be separated by at least half the width of the drain tube. This helps ensure that the central region of the drain tube is substantially flat and can be evenly moved out of the plane of the drain tube to open the drain tube.

[0058] A point along each converging line of weakness may correspond to a midpoint along the length of the weakened stretch strip. A midpoint along each converging line of weakness may correspond to a midpoint along the length of the weakened stretch strip.

[0059] Each converging line of weakness may be shaped asymmetrically about a line connecting the two side edges. Each converging line of weakness may be shaped asymmetrically about a line perpendicular to the two side edges. The converging lines of weakness may be mirror images of one another about a line extending from the upper edge to the lower edge at the midpoint / midway between the two side edges. The converging lines of weakness may be mirror images of one another about a line parallel to the two side edges. Thus, the converging lines of weakness are shaped to ensure that the weakened stretch strip bends asymmetrically to open the drain tube.

[0060] The converging lines of weakness may be arranged at an angle of 5°-40° to the side edge of the drain tube. The converging lines of weakness may be arranged at an angle of at least 5°, at least 10°, at least 15°, or at least 20° to / relative to the side edge of the drain tube. The converging lines of weakness may be arranged at an angle of no more than 40°, no more than 35°, no more than 30°, no more than 25°, or no more than 20° to the side edge of the drain tube. Preferably, the converging lines of weakness may be arranged at an angle of approximately 15° to the side edge of the drain tube.

[0061] The converging lines of weakness may be arranged at an angle of 10° to 40° relative to one another. The converging lines of weakness may be arranged at an angle of at least 5°, at least 10°, at least 15°, at least 20°, at least 25°, or at least 30° relative to one another. The converging lines of weakness may be arranged at an angle of no more than 45°, no more than 40°, no more than 35°, or no more than 30° relative to one another. Preferably, the converging lines of weakness are arranged at an angle of 30° relative to one another. Thus, the converging lines of weakness are tilted at an optimal angle to ensure effective opening of the drain tube.

[0062] The two converging lines of weakness may diverge in a direction toward the distal end of the drain tube. The two converging lines of weakness may diverge in a direction away from the proximal end of the drain tube. The two converging lines of weakness may converge in a direction toward the proximal end of the drain tube. The two converging lines of weakness may converge in a direction away from the distal end of the drain tube. The lower edge of each of the one or more stretch strips may be closer to the distal end of the drain tube than the upper edge. The two converging lines of weakness may be closer to each other at the upper edge of the weakened stretch strip than at the lower edge of the weakened stretch strip. Therefore, this helps to ensure that the distal end of the drain tube is opened as wide as possible to allow stoma output to effectively drain from the drain tube.

[0063] Therefore, in one aspect, an ostomy appliance is provided, comprising a bag and a drain tube, the drain tube being formed by a proximal wall and a distal wall, the proximal wall and the distal wall being attached to each other along two side edges of the drain tube to define a channel therebetween, the drain tube comprising a distal end for outputting stoma effluent from the bag, the drain tube comprising one or more stretching strips, the one or more stretching strips being configured to separate the two walls of the drain tube when compressed in a direction perpendicular to the side edges of the drain tube; wherein a first stretching strip of the one or more stretching strips comprises an upper edge and a lower edge both perpendicular to the side edges, and two converging weakening lines spanning between the upper edge and the lower edge; wherein the two weakening lines converge in a direction away from the distal end of the drain tube.

[0064] The two converging weakened lines may converge in a direction toward the distal end of the drain tube. The two converging weakened lines may radiate in a direction toward the proximal end of the drain tube. The two converging weakened lines may be closer to each other at the lower edge of the weakened stretch strip than at the upper edge of the weakened stretch strip.

[0065] Each of the two converging lines of weakness may be arranged in a corresponding (lateral) half of the weakened stretch strip. Each of the one or more stretch strips may have a width measured between the side edges of the stretch strip. Each of the two converging lines of weakness may cover no more than 25%, no more than 20%, no more than 15%, or no more than 10% of the width of the weakened stretch strip. Each of the two converging lines of weakness may cover at least 5%, at least 10%, at least 15%, or at least 20% of the width of the weakened stretch strip. Preferably, each of the two converging lines of weakness may cover approximately 10% of the width of the weakened stretch strip. Therefore, the lines of weakness do not cause excessive changes in the structural properties of the weakened stretch strip, which may result in poor sealing performance of the drainage tube.

[0066] The one or more lines of weakness may include a transverse line of weakness disposed between, extending between, and / or spanning the two side edges of the weakened stretching strip. The one or more lines of weakness may be at least partially curved, substantially curved, or fully curved. The transverse line of weakness may be curved / curved.

[0067] Therefore, in one aspect, an ostomy appliance is provided, comprising a bag and a drain tube, wherein the drain tube is formed by two walls, the two walls being attached to each other along two side edges of the drain tube to define a channel therebetween, and the drain tube comprises one or more stretching strips, the one or more stretching strips being configured to separate the two walls of the drain tube when compressed in a direction perpendicular to the side edges of the drain tube; wherein a stretching strip of the one or more stretching strips comprises two side edges corresponding to the two side edges of the drain tube and a weakening line spanning between the two side edges, the weakening line being curved / curved.

[0068] The inventors discovered that by providing a transverse weakened line that curves and spans between the two side edges, the weakened stretcher strip is endowed with mechanical properties that effectively separate the two walls of the drain tube and open the tube when compressed. This is because the curvature creates an imbalance, as the portions of the weakened stretcher strip on either side of the weakened line have different mechanical properties. Furthermore, the mechanical properties on each side vary along the weakened line between the two side edges. Consequently, when compressed, the weakened stretcher strip bends at different curvatures, thereby promoting separation of the two walls.

[0069] The first tensioning strip may comprise a transverse line of weakness.

[0070] The transverse line of weakness may extend from a point along one of the two side edges that is offset from the midpoint of the length along the side edge. The transverse line of weakness may extend from a point along each of the two side edges that is offset from the midpoint of the length along the respective side edge. The transverse line of weakness may extend from the same point along each of the two side edges (i.e., if the midpoint of one side edge, the midpoint of the opposite side edge, if the point is offset from the midpoint of the length along one side edge, a point correspondingly offset from the length along the opposite side edge). The transverse line of weakness may span most of the way from one side edge to the opposite side edge, or more preferably, span all the way from one side edge to the opposite side edge. Thus, the weakened stretching strip may separate the two walls of the drain tube more effectively and predictably.

[0071] The transverse weakening line can be arranged in the half of the stretching strip distal to the drain tube's distal end. The midpoint along the transverse weakening line can be the point on the weakening line closest to the drain tube's distal end. The two ends of the transverse weakening line, which can be positioned at the side edges of the stretching strip, can be the points on the transverse weakening line farthest from the drain tube's distal end. Therefore, the midpoint can bend more easily than the two ends to allow the two walls to separate.

[0072] The length of the weakened strut strip can be the same as the length of the side edges. A point along the transverse line of weakness can correspond to the midpoint along the length of the weakened strut strip. The midpoint along the transverse line of weakness can correspond to the midpoint along the length of the weakened strut strip. Thus, the transverse line of weakness can be shaped to encourage bending at the center of the weakened strut strip, but preferably not at its side edges, but at the center along its length, to help produce uneven bending and wall separation.

[0073] The shape of the transverse weakening line can be asymmetrical about a line connecting the two side edges. The shape of the transverse weakening line can be asymmetrical about a line perpendicular to the two side edges. The shape of the transverse weakening line can be symmetrical about a line extending midway between the two side edges. The shape of the transverse weakening line can be symmetrical about a line parallel to the two side edges. Thus, the shape of the transverse weakening line is determined to ensure that the weakened stretching strip bends asymmetrically to open the drain tube.

[0074] The transverse line of weakness can be arranged in half of the weakened strut strip, that is, it can extend across one half / half of the strut strip. The other half of the strut strip can be free of a line of weakness. The span of the transverse line of weakness can be less than half the length of the weakened strut strip, less than one-third the length of the weakened strut strip, or less than one-quarter the length of the weakened strut strip. Thus, the transverse line of weakness does not cause excessive changes in the structural properties of the weakened strut strip, which could lead to poor sealing performance of the drainage tube.

[0075] The transverse line of weakness may be arc-shaped. The transverse line of weakness may define an arc. The radius of curvature of the arc may be greater than the width of the weakened stretching strip. The radius of curvature of the arc may be at least twice the width of the weakened stretching strip. Thus, the transverse line of weakness has a simple but effective arc shape.

[0076] The transverse line may be convex on the side facing the distal end of the drain. This may help to preferentially open the distal end because the stretcher strip segment in the midpoint across the distal end is thinner and therefore easier to bend.

[0077] The curvature of the notch and the curvature of the line of weakness may be opposite along the length of the drain tube. A first support strip including the notch may be positioned on one side of the drain tube. A second support strip including a curved / curved line of weakness may be positioned on the other side of the drain tube. The first and second support strips may be positioned at the same point along the length of the drain tube. The notch and line of weakness may not overlap. Thus, the opposite curvatures and corresponding positioning of the notch and line of weakness facilitate more efficient opening of the drain tube.

[0078] The line of weakness may be curved / curved, thereby inhibiting folding of the support strap and / or drain tube about the line of weakness. The line of weakness may resist folding of the support strap and / or drain tube about the line of weakness by at least 45°, at least 90°, at least 120°, or at least 150°. The drain tube may be unable to fold about a curved line of weakness. The line of weakness may be disposed on one side of at least one of the one or more fold lines of the drain tube. The line of weakness may be located between adjacent fold lines of the drain tube. Thus, the curvature is designed to aid in opening the drain tube, but not to permit folding of the drain tube about the line of weakness.

[0079] The optional features of a line of weakness, a transverse line of weakness, a longitudinal line of weakness, and a converging line of weakness may be equally applicable to any of the lines of weakness, such as a transverse line of weakness, a longitudinal line of weakness, or one or each converging line of weakness. Thus, the present invention provides for flexible design of a weakened stretcher strip according to the requirements of a particular ostomy appliance. [0171] By convention, hidden features are indicated by dashed lines in the figures.

[0172] Reference Figure 1-8 A first embodiment of an ostomy appliance 200 includes a bag 210, a drain tube 220, and a closure mechanism 230. The bag 210 and the drain tube 220 are each formed from two walls of material that are sealed around their perimeters. Thus, in this embodiment, the bag 210 and the drain tube 220 are integrally formed. The two walls include a proximal wall 201, which is intended to be closest to the user's body during use, and a distal wall 202, which is on the side of the ostomy appliance 200 opposite the proximal wall 201. In this embodiment, both walls 201, 202 are formed from a flexible plastic material, such as ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA).

[0173] In this embodiment, in use, the drain tube 220 is arranged at the bottom of the ostomy appliance 200 so that stomal output in the bag 210 can flow downwardly towards and through the drain tube 220 under the influence of gravity.

[0174] In this embodiment, the bag 210 includes a stoma inlet 211 disposed near the top of the ostomy appliance 200 distal to the drain tube 220 and located on the proximal wall 201. The stoma inlet 211 comprises a circular hole in the proximal wall 201 to surround a user's stoma in use and allow stoma output to pass from the stoma and into the bag 210.

[0175] In this embodiment, the bag 210 is a "one-piece piece" and includes an adhesive ring 212 disposed around the stoma entrance 211. The adhesive ring 212 is annular with its inner perimeter defined by the stoma entrance 211 and its outer perimeter spanning approximately twice the width of the inner perimeter, but completely inside the outer edge of the ostomy appliance 200. In this embodiment, the outer perimeter has a square-diamond shape with rounded edges, although different sizes / shapes may be used in various other embodiments. The adhesive ring 212 is formed from a moldable adhesive material, such as a hydrocolloid adhesive. The adhesive ring 212 is attached to the proximal wall 201 and is used to attach the ostomy appliance 200 to the user's body around the stoma.

[0176] In this embodiment, the adhesive circle 212 is provided with a release liner (not shown) to protect the adhesive circle 212 prior to use and to ensure that it does not inadvertently adhere to other objects prior to use.

[0177] In alternative embodiments, the adhesive ring may be replaced by a coupling element for fitting to a corresponding coupling element provided with an adhesive ring.In such embodiments, the ostomy appliance may be a two-piece ostomy appliance.

[0178] In this embodiment, the bag 210 includes an optional vent 213 disposed in the distal wall 202 and aligned with the stoma entrance 211. The vent 213 is configured to allow gases in the bag 210 to exit the bag 210 and, in this embodiment, includes a deodorizing material to neutralize / mitigate and / or mask any unpleasant odor associated with the gases exiting the bag 210.

[0179] In this embodiment, a drain tube 220 extends from the bag 210 at the bottom of the ostomy appliance 200. The drain tube 220 is formed by sealing between the walls 201, 202 along the two side edges 221 of the drain tube 220, thereby forming a channel therebetween. In this embodiment, the drain tube 220 is rectangular, with its width defined between the two side edges 221 of the drain tube 220 and its length perpendicular to its width. The length of the drain tube 220 is approximately 25-35% greater than the width of the drain tube 220, for example, approximately 30% greater. In this embodiment, the width of the drain tube 220 is approximately 70 mm.

[0180] In this embodiment, the drain tube 220 includes a proximal end 222 for receiving stomal output from the bag 210 and corresponding to the bottom of the bag as referred to herein, and an opposing distal end 223 that allows stomal output to exit the drain tube 220 and the ostomy appliance 200. The length of the drain tube is therefore measured between the proximal end 222 and the distal end 223.

[0181] In this embodiment, the drain tube 220 includes a first stretcher strip 224 and a second stretcher strip 225. The first and second stretcher strips 224, 225 are both identical rectangular shapes, with a width spanning the entire width of the drain tube 220, for example, about 70 mm, and a length that is about one-third to about one-quarter of its width, for example, about 20 mm. The first and second stretcher strips 224, 225 are both flat because (when not in use) they have an inherent curvature of zero; this helps keep the drain tube 220 and ostomy appliance 200 compact.

[0182] The first and second stretching strips 224, 225 are formed from a material that is more rigid than the walls 201, 202 forming the drain tube 220, such as high density polyethylene (HDPE) or polystyrene.

[0183] In this embodiment, each of the first and second stretching strips 224, 225 includes a pair of side edges 224s, 225s that are aligned with and positioned above the side edge 221 of the drain tube 222. The first and second stretching strips 224, 225 also each include an upper edge 224u, 225u and a lower edge 224l, 225l, with the lower edges 224l, 225l being closer to the distal end 223 of the drain tube 220 than the upper edges 224u, 225u. The first stretching strip 224 is disposed on the proximal sidewall 201 at the distal end 223 of the drain tube 220, with the lower edge 224l of the first stretching strip 224 aligned with and positioned above the distal end 223 of the drain tube 220. Second stretcher strip 225 is disposed on distal wall 202 at a distance from distal end 223 of drain tube 220 that is greater than the length of first stretcher strip 224, such that a thin lateral gap 227 exists between the two stretcher strips 224, 225. In this embodiment, due to the relatively high rigidity of stretcher strips 224, 225, first and second stretcher strips 224, 225 define a fold line for drain tube 220 at the location of lateral gap 227.

[0184] In this embodiment, the drain tube 220 includes an open configuration in which stoma output is allowed to pass through the drain tube 220. In the open configuration, the drain tube 220 is expanded to define a substantially linear passage therethrough, e.g., Figure 1 and 2 In this embodiment, the drain tube 220 includes a closed configuration in which stoma output is prohibited from passing through the drain tube 220. In the closed configuration, the drain tube 220 is folded to define a closed tortuous passage, such as Figure 8 shown.

[0185] Reference Figure 3-7In this embodiment, first expansion strip 224 is configured to separate walls 201, 202 of drain tube 220 when compressed in a direction perpendicular to side edges 221 of drain tube 220. To enhance the ability of first expansion strip 224 to separate walls 201, 202 of drain tube 220, first expansion strip 224 includes a notch / cutout 226 in its lower edge 2241. This helps facilitate separation of walls 201, 202 even when wet. Lower edge 2241 may also be referred to as a transverse edge because it is substantially perpendicular to the side edges of the drain tube.

[0186] In this embodiment, when the first expansion strip 225 is disposed on the proximal wall 201, the lower edge 2241 and the notch 226 are aligned with and located above the distal end 223 of the drain tube 220. This configuration allows the first expansion strip 224 to open the drain tube 220 when compressed, as described further below.

[0187] In this embodiment, the notch 226 spans approximately 85% of the lower edge 224l and is centrally located within the lower edge 224l. The notch 226 is symmetrical about the midline of the expansion strip, which corresponds to the longitudinal axis of symmetry of the bag 210. This helps ensure more uniform and predictable deformation during the opening of the drain tube 223, while also providing a significant difference in the mechanical properties of the upper edge 224u and the lower edge 224l of the first expansion strip 224 to facilitate separation of the proximal wall 201 and the distal wall 202.

[0188] In this embodiment, the notch 226 has a width measured parallel to the lower edge 224l and a length perpendicular to its width. The notch 226 has an aspect ratio (width:length) of approximately 12:1, which helps ensure that the notch 226 remains strong and flexible enough to prevent damage during bending and unfolding of the drain tube 220.

[0189] In this embodiment, the notch 226 is arcuate. The radius of curvature of the notch 226 is approximately 50% greater than the width of the first stretcher strip 224, as measured between its side edges 224s. This shape ensures that the first stretcher strip 224 deforms more predictably, which helps improve opening performance.

[0190] In this embodiment, the distal end 223 of the drain tube 220 is straight. Consequently, the end region 203 of the proximal wall 201 is exposed where the notch 226 cuts into the first stretcher strip 224. The end region 203 can thus flex and move away from the first stretcher strip 224 because it is not directly attached to any stretcher strip. This further increases the tendency of the proximal and distal walls 201, 202 to separate during opening.

[0191] Reference Figure 4-7In this embodiment, first stretcher strip 224 is compressed to open drain tube 220 and separate proximal and distal walls 201, 202. When compressed, notch 226 provides an imbalance in the mechanical properties of first stretcher strip 224, which causes proximal and distal walls 201, 202 to separate. Lower edge 224l of first stretcher strip 224 is weaker than upper edge 224u and, therefore, bends more under compression, resulting in a greater displacement of lower edge 224l and the opening of drain tube 220 from a normally closed position.

[0192] In this embodiment, when uncompressed, the notch 226 allows the first expansion strip 224 to return to a flat configuration, which helps to more effectively seal and store the drain, as described below.

[0193] In this embodiment, the closure mechanism 230 is configured to retain the drain tube 220 in a closed configuration, and the exemplary closure mechanism includes two fastening elements: a bag fastening element 231 and a drain tube fastening element 232. The fastening elements 231, 232 have the same shape and size; both are rectangular, with a length and width approximately half the length and width of the first and second stretcher strips 224, 225. The fastening elements 231, 232 include complementary fastening surfaces in the form of mushroom-head fasteners that are configured to engage one another when pressed into contact, although in various other embodiments, different fastening surfaces may be used, such as hook-and-hook or hook-and-loop fasteners.

[0194] In this embodiment, the drain tube securing element 232 is located on the proximal wall 201 and between the proximal end 222 of the drain tube 220 and the second stretcher strip 225. In this embodiment, the bag securing element 231 is located on a closure flap 233 attached to the distal wall 202. The closure flap 233 is attached to the distal wall 202 along a base 233b of the closure flap 233. The closure flap 233 is formed of a flexible plastic material, such as that used to form the walls 201, 202, and thus, the closure flap 233 is bendable to pivot relative to the bag 210 about the base 233b. The closure mechanism 230 and the drain tube 220 are arranged so that when the drain tube 220 is in the closed configuration, the drain tube 220 is folded between the distal wall 202 and the closure flap 233 and is located below the closure flap so that the closure flap 233 can be rotated about its base 233b until the bag fastening element 231 contacts the drain tube fastening element 232, for example, as described in more detail below.

[0195] In this embodiment, to manufacture the ostomy appliance 200, the two walls 201, 202 can be pre-cut into the desired shape. The stoma entrance 211 can be formed in the proximal wall 201, or in a different embodiment, can be pre-cut. The bag fastening element 231 can then be attached to the closure flap 233 (e.g., using an adhesive), and the closure flap 233 can then be attached to the distal wall 202 by sealingly connecting the base 233b to the wall 202 (e.g., by welding). The drain tube fastening element 232 can then be added to the proximal wall 201.

[0196] In this embodiment, an adhesive ring 212 can then be attached to the proximal wall 201 and a release liner placed over the adhesive ring 212. A vent 213 can be formed in the distal wall 202, for example by making a small hole in the distal wall 202 and fitting a deodorizing filter over the hole.

[0197] In this embodiment, the two walls 201, 202 can then be sealed together around their peripheral edges, except at the distal end 223 of the drain tube 220. The first stretcher strip 224 can then either have a pre-formed notch 226, or the notch 226 can then be formed, for example, by cutting the first stretcher strip 224. The second stretcher strip 225 is then provided and attached to the proximal walls 201, 202, respectively, at the locations described above.

[0198] In this embodiment, the drain tube 220 is moved into the closed configuration prior to being provided to the user by folding the drain tube 220 along the line between the first and second stretching strips 224, 225 (e.g., at the lateral gap 227), with the distal wall 202 positioned inboard of the folded structure, such that the first stretching strip 224 overlies / overlaps the second stretching strip 225. The drain tube 220 is then folded two more times in the same manner to effectively tuck the distal end 223 of the drain tube 220 within the folded drain tube 220. The final fold in the drain tube 220 is approximately the proximal end 222 of the drain tube 220, so that, in the closed configuration, the entire drain tube 220 overlaps the distal wall 202 of the bag 210.

[0199] In this embodiment, because the drain tube securing element 232 is located on the proximal wall 201, when the drain tube 220 is folded, the drain tube securing element 232 pivots about its position where it is exposed and faces away from the distal wall 202 of the bag 210. In this position, the closure flap 233 can pivot over / over the drain tube 220 and bring the bag securing element 231 into contact with the drain tube securing element 232 to seal the drain tube 220 in a closed configuration. The ostomy appliance 200 can now be provided to the user.

[0200] In this embodiment, to use the ostomy appliance 200, the user first removes the optional release liner and then attaches the ostomy appliance 200 to the body such that the user's stoma is surrounded by the stoma entrance 211. This allows stoma output from the body to enter the ostomy bag 210 where it is collected because the drainage tube 220 is provided in a closed configuration.

[0201] In this embodiment, for example, when the bag 210 is full or when the contents of the bag 210 need to be emptied for other reasons, the user can empty the contents of the bag by moving the drain tube 220 to the open configuration. To do so, the user grasps the closure flap 233 with one hand and the bag 220 with the other hand, and then separates the closure flap 233 and the bag 220 to release the bag fastening element 231 from the drain tube fastening element 232. The drain tube 220 can then be fully unfolded / unwound so that it defines a substantially linear path from the proximal end 222 to the distal end 223 of the drain tube 220.

[0202] Reference Figure 4-7 In this embodiment, the walls 201, 202 of the drain tube 220 can be separated by compressing the first stretching strip 224 in a direction perpendicular to the side edges 224s of the first stretching strip 224 or parallel to the width of the drain tube 220; for example, the user can pinch the side edges 224 together with their thumb and fingers. This causes the first stretching strip 224 to bend out of the plane of the drain tube 220.

[0203] When compressed in this manner, the first stretcher strip 224 bends in an uneven manner to separate the two walls 201, 202. This is guided by the notch 226 which creates an imbalance in the mechanical properties of the first stretcher strip 224 along its length and width.

[0204] In this embodiment, because proximal sidewall 201 is attached to first stretcher strip 224 across its entire area, proximal sidewall 201 follows the shape of first stretcher strip 224 , which causes it to be more easily separated from distal sidewall 202 .

[0205] In this embodiment, now that the walls 201, 202 are separated, the ostomy appliance 200 can be emptied by allowing the contents of the bag 210 to flow out of the drain tube 220. After emptying, the drain tube 220 can be resealed by moving the drain tube 220 from an open configuration to a closed configuration and sealing it closed using the closure mechanism 230 as described above. The ostomy appliance 200 can then be repeatedly refilled, emptied, and resealed by the user.

[0206] Figure 9-15 A second embodiment of an ostomy appliance 400 is shown, Figure 16-22A third embodiment of an ostomy appliance 600 is shown. The second and third embodiments share many of the same features of the first embodiment described above, so only the differences are described below, and like reference numerals are used to represent like features. The primary difference between the first embodiment and the second and third embodiments is that in the second and third embodiments, the first stretching strip 424, 624 is attached to the distal wall 402, 602 in the same manner as it is attached to the proximal wall 201 in the first embodiment. Thus, it exposes the end region 404, 604 of the distal wall 402, 602 (rather than the proximal wall as in the first embodiment). However, in other respects, the first stretching strip 424, 624 is the same as described in the first embodiment and has all of the same features.

[0207] In the second and third embodiments, the ostomy appliance 400, 600 includes three stretching strips: a first stretching strip 424, 624, a second stretching strip 425, 625, and a third stretching strip 440, 640. The second stretching strip 425, 625 has the same features as the second stretching strip of the first embodiment described above. The third stretching strip 440, 640 has the same characteristics as the second stretching strip 425, 625, except that it includes at least one line of weakness 441, 641. The at least one line of weakness provides the third stretching strip 440, 640 with mechanical properties that allow it to work in conjunction with the first stretching strip 424, 624 to more easily separate the two walls of the drain tube 420, 620, as described further below. Therefore, the third stretching strip 440, 640 can be referred to as a weakened stretching strip.

[0208] In the second and third embodiments, respectively, Figure 12 and Figure 14 as well as Figure 20 and Figure 22 As shown, each line of weakness 441, 641 comprises a groove in the outer surface 440o, 640o of the wall of the third stretcher strip 440, 640, distal from the drain tube 420, 640. Thus, the line of weakness 441, 641 is scored or cut out of the third stretcher strip 440, 640 to allow for easier bending about the line of weakness 441, 641, as described below. In this embodiment, each groove has a width of approximately 0.25 mm in a direction perpendicular to each line of weakness.

[0209] In the second and third embodiments, third stretcher strips 440, 640 are positioned on proximal wall 401, 601 at the same location as the first stretcher strips were positioned in the first embodiment described above. Thus, in the second and third embodiments, the first and third stretcher strips are located on either side of the distal end of drain tube 420, 620.

[0210] In the second and third embodiments, the third stretching strips 440, 640 provide an additional rigidity element to help fold the drain tube 420, 640 when closing and opening the drain tube 420, 620. This can improve the sealing effect of the drain tube because it can be folded more tightly.

[0211] See also Figure 9-15 In a second embodiment, the at least one line of weakness comprises a line of weakness 441 that completely spans between the two side edges 440s of the third stretching strip 440 (from one side edge 440s to the opposite side edge 440s). Thus, line of weakness 441 is a transverse line of weakness. Line of weakness 441 is curved / curvilinear, such that it is asymmetrical about a line connecting the two side edges 440s and a line perpendicular to the side edges 440s. Furthermore, line of weakness 441 is convex on the side facing the distal end of the drain tube, such that the curvature of line of weakness 441 and notch 426 are opposite. Furthermore, notch 426 and line of weakness 441 do not overlap, so they each act on different portions of the drain tube. Consequently, when compressed, the first and third stretching strips 424, 440 bend unevenly, which tends to cause the walls 401, 402 to separate, even when the walls are adhered to one another, such as when wet.

[0212] In this embodiment, the weakening line 441 is arranged in the half of the third stretching strip 440 distal to the distal end 423 of the drain tube 420. The weakening line 441 meets the two side edges 440s at approximately three-quarters of the length of the third stretching strip 440 from the lower edge 440l of the third stretching strip 440, corresponding to the point on the weakening line 441 farthest from the lower edge 440l. The midpoint of the weakening line 441 is the point on the weakening line 441 closest to the lower edge 440l and is arranged at the midpoint of the third stretching strip 440 in both length and width. Therefore, the weakening line 441 only spans approximately one-quarter of the length of the third stretching strip 440.

[0213] In this embodiment, the weakening line 441 is a circular arc and is parallel to the lower edge 4401 at the midpoint along the weakening line 441. The weakening line 441 curves away from the lower edge 4401 on either side of the midpoint and has a radius of curvature that is approximately twice the width of the third stretching strip 440, for example, approximately 140 mm. Thus, the weakening line 441 is symmetrical about a line extending midway between the side edges 440s of the third stretching strip 440.

[0214] Reference Figure 12-15In this embodiment, the walls 401, 402 of the drain tube 420 can be separated by compressing the first and third stretching strips 424, 440 in a direction perpendicular to the side edges 440s of the third stretching strip 440 or parallel to the width of the drain tube 420. For example, the user can pinch the two side edges 440s with their thumb and fingers. This causes the third stretching strip 440 to bend out of the plane of the drain tube 420.

[0215] When compressed in this manner, the first stretcher strip 424 bends as described with respect to the first embodiment, but in a non-uniform manner across the distal wall 402, and the third stretcher strip 440 also bends in a non-uniform manner to separate the two walls 401, 402. This is guided by the line of weakness 441, which creates an imbalance in the mechanical properties of the third stretcher strip 440 along its length and width.

[0216] During compression, the change in the angle of the stretch strip between the weakening line 441 and the lower edge 4401 is smaller than the change in the angle of the stretch strip between the weakening line 441 and the upper edge 440u (see Figure 12 and 14 ). However, at the same time, at points between side edges 440s, the curvature of third stretching strip 440 varies more between weakening line 441 and lower edge 4401 than between weakening line 441 and upper edge 440u (see Figure 13 and Figure 15 Thus, the weakened line 441 creates a situation where the angle and curvature of the third stretching strip 440 on either side of the weakened line 441 vary differently to help separate the walls 401, 402 of the drainage tube.

[0217] In this embodiment, because proximal sidewall 401 is attached to third stretcher strip 440 across its entire area, proximal sidewall 401 follows the shape of third stretcher strip 440 , which causes it to separate more easily from distal sidewall 402 .

[0218] Of course, in this embodiment, the drain tube remains foldable about the fold line defined by the edge of the stretch strip. The drain tube is not intended to be foldable about the weakening line because it is a curved groove that does not fold easily.

[0219] See also Figure 16-22In a third embodiment, the at least one line of weakness comprises two converging lines of weakness 641 that span from the upper edge 640u to the lower edge 640l of the third stretching strip 640. Thus, each line of weakness 641 is a longitudinal line of weakness. Each line of weakness 641 is straight and angled / slanted such that it is asymmetrical about a line connecting the two side edges 640s and a line perpendicular to the side edges 640s. Consequently, when compressed, the third stretching strip 640 bends unevenly, which tends to cause the walls 601, 602 to separate, even when adhered to one another, such as when wet.

[0220] In this embodiment, each line of weakness 641 is angled at approximately 30° relative to one another, and therefore at approximately 15° relative to the side edges 640s (and the longitudinal axis of the device). Furthermore, the lines of weakness 641 are mirror images of one another about the longitudinal axis of the drain tube (i.e., a line parallel to and extending midway between the side edges 640s). This helps ensure an asymmetrical bend along the length of the third stretching strip 640, which facilitates opening of the drain tube 620 as described below.

[0221] In this embodiment, the two lines of weakness 641 are closer to each other along the upper edge 640u of the third stretcher strip 640 than along the lower edge 640l. However, along the upper edge 640u, the two lines of weakness 641 are still separated by approximately half the width of the third stretcher strip 640. Thus, while the lines of weakness 641 converge, they do not meet, which helps ensure that the third stretcher strip 640 can bend a considerable distance out of the plane of the drain tube 620 and open the drain tube 620.

[0222] In this embodiment, each weakening line 641 is arranged in a corresponding half of the third stretching strip 640. Each weakening line 641 intersects the upper edge 640u at a point approximately one-quarter the distance from the corresponding side edge 640s to the upper edge 640u. Each weakening line 641 intersects the lower edge 640l at a point approximately 15% of the distance from the corresponding side edge 640s to the lower edge 640l. Thus, each weakening line 641 spans the entire length and approximately 10% of the width of the third stretching strip 640.

[0223] In view of the above, in this embodiment, the two weakened lines 641 diverge towards the distal end 623 of the drain tube 620. This is beneficial because it ensures that the distal end of the drain tube is maximally open, which helps stoma output pass through the drain tube 620 effectively.

[0224] Reference Figure 19-22, in this embodiment, the first and third stretching strips 624, 640 are compressed to open the drain tube 620 and separate the proximal wall 601 and the distal wall 602. When compressed, the first stretching strip 624 functions as described with respect to the first embodiment, but on the distal wall 602. In addition, during compression, the angle of the third stretching strip 640 between each weakening line 641 and the side edge 640s changes less near the upper edge 640u than near the lower edge 640l, which causes the third stretching strip to twist between the upper and lower edges adjacent the two side edges. At the same time, the angle across the width of the third stretching strip 640 between the side edges 640s changes non-linearly at each weakening line 641, which causes the walls 601, 602 to separate (see Figure 21 and 22 In this embodiment, the ostomy appliance 600 is manufactured in a similar manner to the first embodiment, except that the distal wall 602 is additionally provided with a third stretching strip 640 at the above-mentioned location.

[0225] Reference Figure 23-26 The fourth embodiment of the ostomy appliance 500 has many of the same features as the first embodiment described above, so only the differences are described below, and like reference numerals are used to refer to like features.

[0226] In this embodiment, drain tube 520 includes a third stretcher strip 550. Third stretcher strip 550 has the same size and shape as first stretcher strip 524, except that it is approximately 20% narrower than first stretcher strip 524. Thus, third stretcher strip 550 is a narrow stretcher strip. Third stretcher strip 550 is disposed on distal wall 502 at distal end 523 of the drain tube.

[0227] Thus, in this embodiment, when drain tube 520 is compressed, initially only first and second stretching strips 524, 525 bend because they are wider than third stretching strip 550. Then, after continued compression, third stretching strip 550 also bends. This helps open drain tube 520 because it separates the opening action into two distinct phases, with the forces on the drain tube wall being different in each phase. Furthermore, the curvature of second and third stretching strips 525, 550 differs from one another, which helps facilitate separation of the drain tube walls.

[0228] In a variation of the third embodiment, the second stretching strip 525 may be removed entirely, and the drainage tube 520 may have only two stretching strips: the first stretching strip 524 and the third stretching strip 550 .

[0229] Reference Figures 27 to 34 and Figures 35 to 42, respectively showing a fifth embodiment of the ostomy appliance 100 and a sixth embodiment of the ostomy appliance 300. The fifth and sixth embodiments are similar to the first embodiment described above and therefore like reference numerals are used for corresponding features and only the differences are described below.

[0230] In the fifth and sixth embodiments, the first stretching strips do not include the notches of the first embodiment. Instead, the first stretching strips 124, 324 have one or more lines of weakness 126, 326.

[0231] The first stretcher strip 124 of the fifth embodiment is identical to the third stretcher strip of the second embodiment described above and includes a curved weakened line 126 that spans completely between the two side edges 124s of the first stretcher strip 124 .

[0232] The first tensioning strip 324 of the sixth embodiment is identical to the third tensioning strip of the third embodiment described above and includes two converging lines of weakness 326 .

[0233] The first stretching strips 124 and 324 of the fifth and sixth embodiments respectively have all the features of the third stretching strips of the second and third embodiments described above, and therefore will not be described in detail.

[0234] In the fifth and sixth embodiments, the first stretching strips 124, 324 operate as described above with respect to the second and third embodiments to assist in opening the drain tubes 120, 320 when compressed in a similar manner due to the weakening lines 126, 326. As described above, the weakening lines 126, 326 enable the stretching strips 124, 324 to compress and bend unevenly, which assists in opening the drain tubes. Figures 30 to 33 and 38 to 41 are shown in more detail.

[0235] Reference Figures 43 to 46 and Figures 47 to 50 , respectively showing a seventh embodiment of an ostomy appliance 700 and an eighth embodiment of an ostomy appliance 800. The seventh and eighth embodiments are based on the fifth and sixth embodiments described above, therefore like reference numerals are used to describe like features, and only the differences are described.

[0236] The seventh and eighth embodiments additionally include third stretcher strips 750, 850 that are narrower than the first stretcher strips 724, 824 disposed on the distal wall 702, 802 at the distal end 723, 823 of the drain tube. The third stretcher strips 750, 850 are identical to the third stretcher strips of the fourth embodiment described above and share all of the same features.

[0237] As described above, the seventh and eighth embodiments thus provide variations in which one or more lines of weakness on the first stretcher strip are used in conjunction with the narrow stretcher strip to assist in opening the drain tube.

[0238] One or more embodiments have been described above by way of example only. Many variations are possible without departing from the scope of protection provided by the appended claims, for example all dimensions, shapes and materials used are exemplary.
