Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to the field of material handling. More particularly, the present invention relates to a lightweight material carrier or trailer for hauling raw materials, typically in mining and / or construction operations. Background Art

[0002] Likewise, in the mining and construction industries, growing concerns about energy efficiency and environmental impact are driving the need for more efficient excavation and material handling processes. To this end, attention is turning to smaller, more efficient haul trucks (in this case, smaller trucks facilitate the implementation of more energy-efficient technologies, greater autonomy, and, in some cases, renewable energy).

[0003] The pallet or bed of a current haul truck contributes a significant portion of the truck's total weight. Typically, the pallet is constructed of solid steel and provided with a polymer or rubber lining to protect against abrasion and wear. Current pallets weigh approximately 16 tons, with the liner contributing an additional 7 tons. Therefore, the combined weight of the pallet and liner represents a significant portion of the haul truck's total tare weight.

[0004] Reducing pallet weight is believed to have a profound impact on the overall system weight of a haul truck and, therefore, plays a vital role in reducing the environmental impact associated with hauling raw materials. This can be achieved by reducing the energy consumed during the hauling process overall and, further, by bringing the total weight to a level that is more suitable for the use of alternative, environmentally friendly and / or renewable energy sources.

[0005] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a haulage carrier device and a haulage vehicle comprising such a haulage carrier device which will at least partially solve the above-mentioned disadvantages.

[0006] Another object of the present invention is to provide a haul carrier apparatus and a haul vehicle incorporating such a haul carrier apparatus that are useful alternatives to existing haul carrier apparatus and vehicles. Summary of the Invention

[0043] Before explaining any embodiments of the present invention in detail, it should be understood that the application of the present invention is not limited to the construction details and component arrangements set forth in the following description or shown in the following figures. The present invention is capable of other embodiments and can be practiced or implemented in various ways. In addition, it should be understood that the phrases and terms used herein are for descriptive purposes only and should not be considered as limiting. As used herein, "include," "comprise," or "have" and their variations are meant to include the items listed below and their equivalents, as well as additional items. Unless otherwise specified or limited, the terms "mount," "connect," "engage," and their variations are used broadly to include direct and indirect mounting, connection, support, and coupling, and are therefore intended to include direct connections between two components without any other components interposed therebetween, as well as indirect connections between components with one or more other components interposed therebetween. In addition, "connect" and "engage" are not limited to physical or mechanical connections or couplings. In addition, words such as "lower," "upper," "upward," "downward," and "downward" indicate directions in the figures to which reference is made. Terms include the words specifically mentioned above, their derivatives, and words or similar meanings. It should be noted that, as used in this specification and the appended claims, the singular forms "a," "an," and "the," as well as any use of any word in the singular, include plural referents unless expressly and unequivocally limited to one referent. As used herein, the term "include" and its grammatical variations are intended to be non-limiting, such that the recitation of items in a list does not exclude other like items that can be substituted or added to the listed items.

[0044] Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference numerals denote like features, a non-limiting example of a haulage vehicle according to the present invention is generally indicated by the reference numeral 10. A haulage vehicle can take various forms, such as a self-propelled vehicle like a haul truck, or a towing vehicle like a trailer, cart, or truck. Thus, vehicle 10 is not intended to be limited to a particular configuration. For example, in some cases, vehicle 10 can be equipped with wheels 12, while in other cases, vehicle 10 can have tracks. Furthermore, in some embodiments, the vehicle can be configured to travel on train tracks. Vehicle 10 is shown as including a trailer.

[0045] The vehicle 10 has a chassis 14 that serves as a base for supporting a payload, as discussed more fully below.

[0046] The vehicle 10 includes a haulage carrier arrangement 16, whereby the vehicle is configured to haul a load-bearing vehicle. It will be appreciated that the haulage carrier arrangement 16 may form an independent aspect of the present invention.

[0047] The haulage carrier arrangement 16 includes a support arrangement 18 secured to and supported by the chassis 14 .

[0048] In addition, the haul carrier arrangement 16 also includes a carrier arrangement 20 made of a flexible material. The carrier arrangement 20 takes the form of an expansion piece or sheet 22 of flexible material and, as shown in the embodiment illustrated in the figures, can generally be composed of a plurality of flexible material sheets (reference numerals indicating individual sheets have a suffix) connected along adjacent edges 24 to form a single expansion piece or sheet 22. Typically, the individual sheets are not rectangular, but rather are substantially triangular or trapezoidal in shape, so that the sheets 22 define a generally bowl-shaped container 26 with an open top end 28 when unloaded. The sheets can converge toward a bottom portion 30 of the container 26. The bottom portion 30 of the container 26 is formed by a mesh 32, which is a replaceable or consumable protective element provided in an area of high impact, load, and wear during loading.

[0049] The sheet 22 is suspended from the support means 18 such that a container 26 is suspended from the support means 18 toward the chassis 14. The support means 18 thus supports the sheet 22 in such a manner that the top end 28 remains open and forms the container 26. In use, the container 26 receives a load of raw materials (not shown) hauled by the vehicle 10 through the open top end 28.

[0050] The sheet 22 is made of a mesh material, in particular a synthetic mesh material. Typically, the mesh can be a high-strength steel wire or rope mesh having a rhombus or annular mesh shape. The sheet 22 can take the form of a mesh. Typically, the mesh or mesh can be made of ropes or wires having a diameter in the range of 2 mm to 6 mm, but larger diameter ropes or wires are permitted. Each rope or wire has a typical tensile strength of about 20 kN to 40 kN and can be coated with an anti-corrosion coating. In some examples, the type of mesh can be High-strength steel wire mesh 12 / 3 / 30016 / 3 / 30019 / 3 / 300、 High-strength spiral rope net or High-strength steel wire mesh

[0051] Alternatively, the mesh may be a reinforced mesh, reinforced by steel cords or wires interwoven within the mesh. In some cases, the cords or wires may be synthetic or composite structures. The nominal diameter of the cords or wires typically ranges from 15 mm to 30 mm, with a minimum breaking load of 250 kN to 400 kN. The cords may include an anti-corrosion coating, such as galvanizing. The cords may be arranged in a grid, with spacing between adjacent cords ranging from 0.2 m to 1 m.

[0052] In addition to the interwoven steel cords or wires, the carrier device may also include other reinforcements, such as externally extending (circumferentially, peripherally, and / or radially extending) reinforcements in the form of steel cords or wires, synthetic ropes, or strapping, etc. Such interwoven and / or external reinforcements are provided to increase the structural integrity of the sheet, limit the allowable amount of stretch and / or elastic deformation of the sheet, and improve the load and abrasion handling capabilities of the sheet.

[0053] The mesh material may have a mesh structure such as a plain weave, a twill weave, a Dutch weave, a plain Dutch weave, a twill Dutch weave, a reverse Dutch weave, or a composite weave.

[0054] The mesh size of the mesh material is generally determined by the type of raw materials or cargo carried by the vehicle 10 and the type of downstream process. The relevance of the mesh's pore size will be discussed more fully below.

[0055] The support means 18 is comprised of a plurality of elongated steel structural members (beams or columns 34) mounted on and extending from the chassis 14. The columns 34 project in a generally upward direction, although at an angle relative to the chassis 14. The columns 34 flare upward and outward relative to the chassis 14.

[0056] The edges 36 of the sheet 22 are secured to the upper portions of the columns 34. The edges themselves may typically be reinforced. In addition, a tensioning ring 38 is provided around the upper portions of the columns 34 to provide structural rigidity and support to the support device 18. The tensioning ring 38 takes the form of a steel rope or cable or a steel rod, tube, or beam that extends between the columns 34. The tensioning ring 38 may be manufactured from a single piece or may comprise separate interconnected pieces.

[0057] This configuration generally allows the sheet 22 to hang freely, so that it is not directly pressed against the posts 34 or the chassis (except for the bottom portion 30). As a result, the sides of the sheet 22 may be largely unsupported, and dynamic displacement of a portion of the sheet 22 relative to the support means 18 and the chassis 14 is possible.

[0058] That is, impact bumpers or impact pads (not shown) may be provided on the sheet-facing surface of the posts 34 and / or the base pan 14 to absorb shock and limit abrasion and wear caused during loading of the container 26 with raw material.

[0059] It is believed that the dynamic displacement of the sheet 22 relative to the chassis 14 may help absorb the shock and loads generated during loading.

[0060] Because the sheet 22 is made of a mesh material, it can perform a basic separation function for the raw material, as material fragments smaller than the pore size of the mesh (and grid 32) are allowed to fall through the mesh pores. It is believed that the free suspension of the container 26, which allows the sheet to be displaced relative to the support device 18, can assist in the separation process, as smaller particles and fragments are pushed toward the sheet and through the pores. Thus, when the raw material (after having been hauled by the vehicle 10) is deposited into the secondary process, some of the smaller and unusable fragments and particles may have been removed or discharged from the raw material, thereby relieving some of the separation and / or sorting burden of the downstream process.

[0061] Furthermore, it is provided that the lamellae consist of more than one lamellae arranged in a stacked manner. Different lamellae can be associated with different hole sizes in order to facilitate the sorting of material based on different nominal chip sizes.

[0062] It will be appreciated that vibrations transmitted from the chassis may assist in the sorting function associated with the sheets 22. Additionally, vibrations may be induced externally by forced vibrations applied to the sheets 22 (via a vibrator) to facilitate further or more efficient sorting.

[0063] In some examples, carrier device 20 includes at least one, but typically multiple, internal sensing devices (not shown) that can be used to sense various parameters associated with the carried raw material, such as deflection, load, shock, and vibration imparted to sheet 22, abrasion and wear of sheet 22, etc. For example, during loading or transport of the raw material, dynamic strain signals from the internal sensing devices are measured, which can determine particle size distribution or the identity of oversized particles on a binary basis.

[0064] It is believed that the present configuration of the carrier device 20 may also be suitable for measuring the capacitance or resistance of the raw material using electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) and / or electrical resistance tomography (ERT) using a charged interior and interwoven sensing device.

[0065] Thus, the internal sensing devices may provide an indication (in real time, intermittently, or historically) of the condition of the carrier device 20 or even the vehicle 10 .

[0066] The sensing device may take the form of sensing strands woven into the sheet 22. Typically, the sensing strands may take the form of electrical or fiber optic sensing strands. Alternatively, the sensing device may take the form of a clamp-on sensing device that utilizes radio frequency devices or surface acoustic waves to measure parameters (which are typically limited to mechanical measurements).

[0067] Additionally, vehicle 10 may include external sensing capabilities enabled by visual accessibility of the raw materials, facilitated by the substantially transparent sheet 22 (in the case of a net or mesh). The external sensing capability is provided by a visual or spectroscopic device that visually or spectroscopically assesses the raw materials. Thus, the external sensing capability focuses on assessing the raw materials and can be used, for example, to sort or grade the materials.

[0068] Additionally, machine vision methods can utilize visibility through a net or mesh to estimate particle size distribution, monitor the presence of oversized particles, and / or identify foreign matter that may be problematic for downstream operations.

[0069] Internal or external metal detection strands may be introduced to identify the presence of unwanted scrap steel (so called "trash metal") such as scrap steel from bucket teeth or stockpiles from previous mining operations.

[0070] Due to the substantially transparent sheet 22, it is believed that at least some of the following sensing techniques and results can be achieved:

[0071] -X-ray fluorescence (XRF): elemental composition of raw materials;

[0072] - Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS): elemental composition of raw materials;

[0073] - Hyperspectral: Mineral composition;

[0074] - Visual: lithologic composition, grain size distribution (PSD);

[0075] - Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR): volume-based mineral composition;

[0076] - Laser Induced Fluorescence: Composition; and

[0077] - Nuclear methods, such as pulsed fast thermal neutron activation (PFTNA) or prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA): volume-based elemental composition.

[0078] It will be appreciated that internal sensing and external sensing may be performed at predetermined discrete time intervals to provide an improved representation compared to isolated measurements.Introducing vibrational energy between measurements may promote net transport of particles within the web.

[0079] Furthermore, it will be appreciated that sensing may be performed during the loading or transport of raw materials.

[0080] The use of sheets 22 rather than solid boxes or pallets with associated liners significantly reduces the overall weight of the vehicle 10, resulting in a more efficient (energy-efficient and therefore environmentally friendly) hauling process.

[0081] Furthermore, it is believed that if the sheet becomes worn, it is relatively easy, quick, and cost-effective to replace the sheet (especially when compared to solid tank or even synthetic tank liners).

[0082] Furthermore, the substantially transparent sheet 22 is believed to provide unique benefits from both an interior sensing and an exterior sensing perspective.

[0083] It will be understood that the foregoing description provides only exemplary embodiments of the present invention and that numerous variations are possible without departing from the spirit and / or scope of the invention.

[0084] For example, some of the above functions may be obtained by a sheet made of solid material (rather than mesh), and such a sheet would therefore form part of the present invention.

[0085] In addition, the support device can take various other forms and need not include a separate column extending from the chassis. For example, the support device can theoretically take the form of a frame member that extends along the periphery of the open top end 28.

[0086] It will be appreciated that in some examples, the vehicle may be configured as a dump truck, and the support device 18 and / or chassis 14 and / or another structural component of the vehicle 10 may be configured to lift or tilt the carrier device 20 to dump the raw material carried therein.

[0087] Furthermore, in some cases, the carrier device may be removably supported by the support device 18. In such a case, the carrier device 20 (formed in a bag-like configuration) may be detached and removed from the vehicle 10 (e.g., by a crane) to allow for disposal of the material carried therein, or to allow for further transport (separate from the vehicle) or even storage of the raw materials.

[0088] It will be readily understood from this application that the specific features of the present invention, as generally described and illustrated in the drawings, can be arranged and designed according to various configurations. Thus, the description of the present invention and the accompanying drawings are not intended to limit the scope of the invention, but are intended to illustrate selected embodiments.

[0089] It will be understood by those skilled in the art that the technical features of a given embodiment may in fact be combined with the features of another embodiment, unless otherwise stated or it is obvious that these features are incompatible. In addition, unless otherwise stated, the technical features described in a given embodiment may be isolated from other features of this embodiment.
