Description

[0001] The present invention relates to a machine tool with a machine frame having a base plate on which a gantry beam is fixedly arranged, with at least one vertically aligned tool spindle equipped to hold tools, which is movable vertically on the gantry beam in a first direction and horizontally in a second direction orthogonal to the first direction, with at least one device arranged in a work space on the base plate for clamping workpieces to be machined with the tool spindle, with a stationary tool change magazine assigned to the tool spindle for a tool change using the pick-up method, and at least one tool storage magazine assigned to the tool change magazine, wherein the tool change magazine and each tool storage magazine extend in the second direction.

[0002] Such a machine tool is known from DE 10 2017 105 933 A1.

[0003] DE 10 2006 058 221 A1 discloses a machine tool for machining workpieces, comprising a stationary machine frame, a tool spindle with a spindle mount for clamping a machining tool, and a first slide guide, by means of which the tool spindle can be moved in a first axial direction relative to the machine frame. The machine tool has a tool magazine having a plurality of magazine locations for storing a plurality of machining tools. The tool magazine has at least one circulating chain on which the magazine locations are formed. The circulating chain defines a lateral surface within which the first slide guide is at least partially arranged, and the chain is mounted on the stationary machine frame. This means that the magazine chain is arranged in a rotating, yet stationary configuration, as it is not moved during the tool spindle's travel movements. This arrangement is advantageous in terms of dynamics, weight, and the magazine's potential capacity.

[0004] DE 10 2017 122 439 A1 discloses a gantry-type machine tool with a fixed gantry. Two tool spindles are movable on the gantry in a vertical direction and a first horizontal direction. A swivel bridge with two tool holding positions is arranged in front of the gantry and can be moved in a second horizontal direction. The gantry has an opening through which a tool change can be performed. Tool magazines are arranged behind the gantry, and a respective tool changer is used to transfer tools between the tool spindles in front of the gantry and the tool magazines behind the gantry.

[0005] DE 199 50 318 A1 discloses a machine tool equipped with devices for automated tool changing and automated workpiece carrier changing. Tools are housed in so-called tool comb cassettes. A disc magazine is provided as the tool storage device. This disc has two magazine discs arranged one above the other with a common axis of rotation, so that tool comb cassettes can be arranged around the circumference of the magazine discs or one above the other. A handling unit can transfer tool comb cassettes between the two magazine discs. The tool change takes place as a pick-up tool change directly between the work spindle and a tool comb cassette in the tool magazine.

[0006] The machine tool known from DE 10 2017 105 933 A1 comprises a machine frame with a base plate on which two fixed portal beams are arranged, each located at the top of an end wall. These beams run parallel to each other and define a work area between them. A vertically arranged tool spindle is movable vertically and longitudinally on each portal beam.

[0007] In the work area, two devices are provided that can be moved transversely to the portal beams and back and forth between them for clamping workpieces to be machined.

[0008] Each spindle head is assigned a tool change magazine, the inner end of which is permanently positioned above the base plate so that it can be approached by the assigned tool spindle using the pick-up method for tool changes.

[0009] The outer end of each tool change magazine protrudes laterally beyond the base plate, thus being located adjacent to the machine frame. Above each tool change magazine is a tool storage magazine, which is offset outward from the inner end of the tool change magazine below it, so that the magazines are arranged in a terraced manner.

[0010] Outside the work area, transfer devices are arranged to the side of the machine frame so that they can transfer tools between the tool storage magazines and the tool change magazine.

[0011] Although this machine tool more than meets all requirements for most applications, it is not sufficiently easy to operate or maintain in certain cases, and retooling for machining different, complex workpieces can be particularly problematic.

[0012] EP 2 777 872 A1 discloses a vertical machining center in a gantry design, in which a horizontal U-shaped machine frame encompasses a work area in which a fixture for clamping workpieces to be machined is pivotably mounted about a horizontal axis. The vertical tool spindle is mounted on the side walls of the U-shaped machine frame.

[0013] A circular tool magazine is arranged within the machine frame, where the tool spindle can change tools using a pick-up process.

[0014] Below the tool magazine, an identical tool magazine is provided in which additional tools are kept in stock, which can be transferred between the two tool magazines using a transfer device arranged at an opening in the machine frame.

[0015] The well-known machining center enables the machining of a wide variety of workpieces with a large number of tools, although the workpiece can only be machined in one setup.

[0016] The disadvantage of this machining center is that many workpieces cannot be finished within the machining center.

[0017] Against this background, the object of the present invention is to further develop the machine tool mentioned at the outset in such a way that it is structurally simple and inexpensive, easy to operate and maintain, and can be quickly and easily converted for the machining of different, complex workpieces.

[0018] According to the invention, this object is achieved in that in the known machine tool the at least one tool storage magazine is arranged below the tool change magazine next to the base plate, as seen in the first direction.

[0019] The arrangement of the tool storage magazines next to the base plate makes it easy and quick to replace the tool storage magazines completely or to arrange them for the first time on a machine tool if the number of tools in the tool change magazine is not sufficient for machining certain workpieces.

[0020] The arrangement of the tool storage magazines according to the invention also enables quick and easy conversion of the new machine tool to the machining of new workpieces which require new tool sets.

[0021] The tool storage magazines are easy and quick to replace because they are located on the floor next to the machine frame and can therefore be quickly and easily removed from the machine tool, for example, using a pallet truck. They can also be quickly and easily reinserted if necessary. They are also easy to maintain when decoupled.

[0022] Furthermore, the number of available tools can be easily and quickly increased by adding a tool storage magazine with a larger tool capacity or a second or third additional tool storage magazine.

[0023] Because the additional tool storage magazines are arranged below the level of the tool change magazine, the entire arrangement is not very high, which is also advantageous for cost reasons.

[0024] Furthermore, access to the tool spindles is improved because the top of the tool change magazine, which is now free compared to the machine tool described in DE 10 2017 105 933 A1, can now be used as an access point. This enables quick and easy maintenance and operation.

[0025] The problem underlying the invention is thus completely solved.

[0026] It is preferred if two portal beams extending in the second direction and running parallel to one another are arranged on the base plate, on each of which at least one tool spindle is mounted so as to be movable in the first and second directions, and if a device for clamping workpieces to be machined, a tool change magazine and at least one associated tool storage magazine are provided for each tool spindle in the work space, wherein preferably the two tool spindles point towards one another so that the work space is formed between the portal beams, further preferably the machine frame has two end walls arranged on the base plate, at the upper ends of which one of the portal beams is formed, further preferably both devices are movable horizontally in the work space in a third direction orthogonal to the first and second directions, wherein further preferably guides extending in the third direction are arranged on the base plate, on which the two devices are mounted.,

[0027] The advantage of these measures is that the machine tool is designed like a double gantry machine, in which the two gantry beams extend parallel to each other and hold the two tool spindles between them, which can be moved parallel to the gantry beams and perpendicular to the gantry beams.

[0028] It is further advantageous that by moving at least one of the two devices, a workpiece partially machined in the first device can be transferred to the second device, which then only has to travel a very short distance in order to present this partially machined workpiece to the second tool spindle for final machining, preferably on the sixth side.

[0029] Another advantage is that only two travel directions are implemented in the tool spindle, while the third is implemented in the respective fixture. This also results in a very rigid machine tool, as tilting moments are largely avoided in the tool spindles.

[0030] In general, it is preferred if the or each tool changing magazine is arranged with its inner end permanently above the base plate, and preferably with its outer end protrudes in the second direction beyond the base plate, wherein further preferably the or each tool storage magazine is arranged with its inner end below the outer end of the associated tool changing magazine.

[0031] The advantage here is that a tool change is possible at any time using the pick-up method. It is not necessary for the tool change magazine to first be moved into the work area. For the tool change, the relevant tool spindle may be moved out of the work area, for which purpose a door in a side wall may be opened, separating the inner end of the tool change magazine from the work area.

[0032] Unlike the aforementioned EP 2 777 872 A1, the tool change magazine is not located entirely within the machine frame, but rather protrudes laterally from the machine frame. Furthermore, the tool storage magazine is completely decoupled from the machine frame. This not only enables a compact design of the new machine tool, but also allows for a larger number of tools to be stored in the tool change magazine, since the dimensions of the tool change magazine are not limited by the dimensions of the machine frame.

[0033] Because the tool change magazine and tool storage magazine only overlap at their ends, both magazines are easily accessible from all sides for maintenance work and operation.

[0034] It is particularly preferred if a transfer device is provided at the outer end of the or each tool change magazine in order to transfer tools between the tool change magazine and the or each associated tool storage magazine.

[0035] The advantage here is that the tool spindle only has to move to the tool change magazine. This means that the tool spindle only has to perform short strokes in the vertical and horizontal directions, i.e., the first and second directions, to change tools and then move back to the workpiece. These "short Z and Y axes" not only enable a very rigid and compact design of the new machine tool, they also allow for a short chip-to-chip time, which in turn enables fast machining of the workpieces.

[0036] The transfer devices located outside the work area next to the machine frame also enable simple and trouble-free maintenance, allowing for quick and easy loading and unloading of tools. This allows the new machine tool to be quickly and flexibly converted to the machining of new workpieces that require at least some tools from the tool change magazine and / or tool storage magazine to be replaced.

[0037] A particularly advantageous feature, however, is that entire tool storage magazines can be exchanged, allowing them to be equipped with the tools required for machining second workpieces, different from the first, while the first workpieces are still being machined. This allows for quick and easy conversion of the new machine tool to the machining of new workpieces.

[0038] Furthermore, it is preferred if at least one side wall is provided which separates the working space from the tool changing magazine, and in which preferably a spindle opening is provided through which the tool spindles move out of the working space for the tool change via the tool changing magazine, and in which further preferably a workpiece opening is provided through which workpieces are transported into and out of the working space.

[0039] The advantage here is that the tool magazines and operating personnel are protected from flying chips and splashing coolant. To improve protection, the openings in the side panel can be closed with doors when workpieces are being machined.

[0040] Finally, it is preferred if a cross beam is arranged parallel to the or each portal beam and above the working space, on which cross beam at least one workpiece changer movable in the first and second directions is arranged, wherein preferably the cross beam runs above the workpiece opening, and the workpiece changer moves through the workpiece opening for the workpiece change.

[0041] The advantage here is that, as an alternative to changing the workpieces under the portal beams, a workpiece changing system is created that is extremely simple in design, can be assembled quickly, and is easy to maintain because all components are easily accessible.

[0042] Furthermore, it is preferred if the two portal beams are connected to each other by a cable bridge extending in the third direction, which runs above the cross beam and the workpiece changer.

[0043] The advantage here is that the spindle heads can be easily supplied with power and / or control signals. The cable bridge enables easy routing and maintenance of the electrical, pneumatic, and / or hydraulic connections, which in conventional machine tools are often located inside the machine tools.

[0044] It is understood that the features mentioned above and those to be explained below can be used not only in the combination specified in each case, but also in other combinations or on their own, without departing from the scope of the present invention.

[0045] An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawing and explained in more detail in the following description. They show: Fig. 1 is a side view of a machine tool which has been further developed within the scope of the present invention; Fig. 2 a perspective view of the new machine tool, seen along the line II-II of Fig. 1, with a section of a panel wall that delimits a work space, showing the new arrangement of tool changing magazine and two tool storage magazines; Fig. 3 a perspective view of the new machine tool from above; and Fig. 4 in a representation like Fig. 3 the new machine tool, equipped with an automatic workpiece changer.

[0046] In Fig. 1 shows a side view, not to scale, of a machine tool 10 having a U-shaped machine frame 11 open at the top. The individual components of the machine tool 10 are only indicated schematically because it is not the specific design but rather the arrangement and interaction that are decisive for the advantages realized with the new structure of the machine tool 10.

[0047] The machine frame 11 comprises a base plate 12, from which two end walls 14, 15 protrude vertically upwards. At the upper ends 16, 17 of each of these end walls, a portal beam 18, 19 is located, which is thus fixed relative to the machine frame 11. The base plate 12, end walls 14, 15, and portal beams 18, 19 are either formed integrally with one another or are manufactured as separate components and subsequently firmly connected to one another, for example, by gluing.

[0048] Mounted on the first gantry beam 18 is a spindle head 21, which carries a rotatable tool spindle 22, i.e., rotatable about a spindle axis, into which a tool 23 is clamped. Likewise, arranged on the second gantry beam 19 is a spindle head 24, which carries a tool spindle 25, rotatable about a spindle axis, into which a tool 26 is clamped.

[0049] The tools 23 and 26 are used to machine workpieces 27 and 28, which are clamped in schematically illustrated devices 29 and 31, which can rotate the workpieces 27 and 28 in a manner known per se about their longitudinal axes for positioning and / or set them in rotation for turning.

[0050] The tool spindles 22 and 25 as well as the fixtures 29 and 31 are arranged in a common workspace 32, which is enclosed by the machine frame 11. In the workspace 32, the tools 23, 26 and the workpieces 27, 28 are moved relative to one another in order to machine the workpieces 27, 28 and transfer them between the fixtures 29, 31, as well as to change the tools 23, 26.

[0051] For this purpose, the tool spindles 22 and 25 can be moved via the spindle heads 21 and 24, respectively, on the portal beams 18, 19 running parallel to one another in a first direction 33 which extends vertically and is generally referred to as the Z-axis.

[0052] In addition, the tool spindles 22 and 25 are movable via the spindle heads 21, 24 on the portal beams 18, 19 in a second, horizontal direction 34 orthogonal to the first direction 33, which is generally referred to as the Y-axis and extends perpendicularly into the plane of the drawing of the Fig. 1 runs into it.

[0053] The two tool spindles 22, 25 are spaced apart from each other in a third direction 35 which is orthogonal to the first and second directions 33, 34 and which is generally referred to as the X-axis and runs horizontally.

[0054] The spindle heads 21 and 24 are positioned head to head in the direction 35.

[0055] Top left in Fig. 1 shows a coordinate system 36, which shows the position of the directions 33, 34 and 35. The coordinate system 36 is also shown in Fig. 2 and also applies to the Fig. 3 and Fig. 4.

[0056] An opening 37 is provided in the end wall 14 and an opening 38 is provided in the end wall 15. The opening 37 can be used for the supply of an unmachined workpiece 27, and the opening 38 can be used for the removal of a finished workpiece 28.

[0057] It should also be mentioned that the two devices 29 and 31 are movable in the third direction 35, for which purpose guides 39 and 41 are arranged on the base plate 12, of which Fig. 1 only the guide 39 can be seen.

[0058] Fig. 2 shows a perspective view of the machine tool 10 from Fig. 1 seen along the line II-II from Fig. 1.

[0059] In Fig. 2, the two guides 39, 41 for the device 31 can be seen, with which it can be moved in the third direction 35. The device 29 also moves on the guides 39, 41.

[0060] The device 29 has a spindle 42 with which the workpiece 27 can be turned or rotated about its longitudinal axis. The pivot axis 43 is aligned parallel to the second direction 34.

[0061] In Fig. 1, the spindle of the device 31 is shown with 49, with which the workpiece 28 can be turned and set in rotation. Furthermore, at 51 in Fig. 1 shows the pivot axis of the device 31.

[0062] The spindle 49 is pivotally mounted about the pivot axis 51 on two cheeks 44, 45, via which the entire device 3 can be moved along the guides 39, 41 in the third direction 35.

[0063] In Fig. 2 it can also be seen that the portal beam 19 extends in the second direction 34 and has a guide 46 on which the spindle head 24 can be moved in the second direction 34.

[0064] As already mentioned, the spindle head 24 is also movable in the first direction 33. Arrows 47 and 48 indicate the movability of the spindle head 24 in the second direction 34 and the first direction 33.

[0065] It is understood that the spindle head 21 is mounted on the portal beam 18 in the same way as the spindle head 24 is mounted on the portal beam 19.

[0066] Furthermore, the device 29 is constructed and movable and pivotable in the same way as the device 31. Both devices 29, 31 therefore run on the guides 39, 41, so that partially machined workpieces 27 can be transferred between them.

[0067] A workpiece introduced through the opening 37 into the work space 32 and clamped into the spindle 42 of the fixture 29 is machined with the tool 23, which is clamped into the tool spindle 22, until all sides and surfaces protruding from the spindle 42 have been machined. For this purpose, the fixture 29 is moved in the third direction 35 and its spindle 42 is pivoted, if necessary, about the pivot axis 43.

[0068] When the partial machining of the workpiece 27 is completed, the device 29 moves in the direction of the device 31 and / or the device 31 moves in the direction of the device 29, whereupon the workpiece 27 is clamped in the spindle 49 and is available there as a partially machined workpiece 28 for further machining.

[0069] By moving the device 39 in the third direction 35 and / or pivoting the spindle 49 about the pivot axis 43, the partially machined workpiece 28 is now presented to the tool 26 in the tool spindle 25 in such a way that all sides and surfaces not yet machined can be finished.

[0070] When the workpiece 28 has been finished, the spindle 49 pivots about the pivot axis 51 by approximately 180° so that the workpiece 28 can be removed or unloaded through the opening 38 in a suitable manner.

[0071] In this respect, the machine tool 10 is known from the applicant's DE 10 2017 105 933 A1 mentioned above.

[0072] Since the workpieces 28, 27 require complex machining, two tools 23, 26 are not sufficient for their machining, which is why tool magazines are provided which are arranged more advantageously than the machine tool known from the aforementioned DE 10 2017 105 933 A1, as is now the case in connection with the Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 is described.

[0073] In Fig. 2 it can be seen that the spindle head 24 is assigned a fixed tool change magazine 53 which is arranged with its inner end 54 permanently above the base plate 12, while it projects with its outer end 55 in the second direction 34 beyond the base plate 12.

[0074] In the tool change magazine 53, a plurality of tools 26 are kept in stock in so-called magazine locations in a manner known per se, which tools can be moved within the tool change magazine 53 so that they are available at the inner end 54 for tool changing.

[0075] By moving the spindle head 24 in the second direction 34 and the first direction 33, which is indicated by the arrows 47, 48, the tool spindle 25 can approach the inner end 54 of the tool change magazine 53 and there place tools 26 in the pick-up process into free magazine locations and pick up new tools 26 from equipped magazine locations.

[0076] Depending on the need for tools 26 to be stored and their dimensions, the tool change magazine 53 can have different dimensions.

[0077] If the number of required tools 26 becomes too large, tool storage magazines 56, 57 are arranged below the tool change magazine 53, i.e. below its level, as seen in the first direction 33, which are arranged next to the base plate 12, as seen in the second direction 34, the lower tool storage magazine 57 standing on the floor so that it can be easily removed.

[0078] Depending on the number of tools 26 required, only one tool storage magazine 56 or more than two tool storage magazines 56, 57 may be provided.

[0079] Tool change magazine 53 and tool storage magazines 56, 57 extend in the second direction 34 and are arranged such that the tool storage magazines 56, 57 are arranged with their inner ends 58, 59 below the outer end 55 of the tool change magazine 53, and with their outer ends 61, 62 protrude laterally further from the machine frame 11.

[0080] Further tools 26 are provided in the tool storage magazines 56, 57, which, however, cannot be directly inserted into the tool spindle 25, but must be reloaded into the tool change magazine 53.

[0081] This reloading is carried out by a reloading device 63 which is arranged in the second direction 34 next to the base plate 12 so that it can reload tools 26 between the outer end 55 of the tool change magazine 53 and the inner ends 58, 59 of the tool storage magazines 56, 57.

[0082] In Fig. 2 also shows a section of a side wall 65, which delimits the working space 32 in the second direction 34 and separates it from the tool magazines 53, 56, 57. A spindle opening 66 is provided in the side wall 6, through which the spindle head 24 passes over the inner end 54 of the tool change magazine 53 in order to change tools 26 using the pick-up method.

[0083] The spindle opening 66 is closed by a door (not shown) when workpieces 27, 28 are machined in the work area 32 in order to protect operating personnel and the tool magazines 53, 56, 57 from flying chips and splashing cooling lubricant.

[0084] The Fig. 3 shows the entire machine tool 10 from Fig. 1 in a perspective view from above, where like reference numerals designate identical design features.

[0085] In Fig. 3 it can be seen that the spindle head 21 is also assigned a fixed tool change magazine 71, which is arranged with its inner end 72 permanently above the base plate 12, while its outer end 73 protrudes in the second direction 34 above the base plate 12.

[0086] In the tool change magazine 71, several tools 23 are again kept in stock in the magazine locations, which can be moved within the tool change magazine 71 in such a way that they are available at the inner end 72 for tool change in the pick-up process, as can be seen from Fig. 2 for the spindle head 24 has already been described. For this purpose, a further spindle opening is provided in the side wall 65, which is not visible in the figures.

[0087] As seen in the first direction 33, tool storage magazines 74, 75 are arranged below the tool change magazine 71, which are arranged next to the base plate 12 as seen in the second direction 34, the lower tool storage magazine 75 standing on the floor so that it can be easily removed.

[0088] Tool change magazine 71 and tool storage magazines 74, 75 extend in the second direction 34 and are arranged such that the tool storage magazines 74, 75 are arranged with their inner ends 76, 77 below the outer end 73 of the tool change magazine 71, and with their outer ends 78, 79 protrude laterally further from the machine frame 11.

[0089] Further tools 23 are provided in the tool storage magazines 74, 75, which can be reloaded into the tool change magazine 71 using a reloading device 81.

[0090] The transfer device 81 is also arranged next to the base plate 12, as seen in the second direction 34, so that it can transfer tools 23 between the outer end 73 of the tool change magazine 71 and the inner ends 76, 77 of the tool storage magazines 74, 75.

[0091] With this arrangement, tool storage magazines 56, 57, 74, 75 can be easily added to or removed from the machine tool 10 at any time, as needed. It is also possible to replace entire tool storage magazines 56, 57, 74, 75 that have already been loaded with the tools 23, 26 required for machining second workpieces different from the first workpieces 27, 28 during the machining of the first workpieces 27, 28. This enables quick and easy conversion of the new machine tool 10 to the machining of new workpieces that require different tool sets.

[0092] The top sides of the tool change magazines 53, 71 can also be designed as access routes through which operating personnel can easily and quickly access the spindle heads 21, 24 for maintenance or operating purposes.

[0093] Fig. 4 shows the new machine tool 10 in a representation such as Fig. 3, only here the workpiece change takes place through a workpiece opening 82 provided in the side wall 65, which, like the spindle opening 66, is closed by a door not shown when workpieces 27, 28 are machined in the work space 32, in order to protect operating personnel and the tool magazines 53, 56, 57, 71, 74, 75 from flying chips and splashing coolant.

[0094] Parallel to the portal beams 18, 19, a cross beam 83 is arranged above the working space 32, which is mounted on two support beams, of which Fig. 4 one is shown, which is designated by 84, and on which two workpiece changers 85, 86 movable in the first and second directions 33, 34 are arranged.

[0095] The crossbar 83 runs above the workpiece opening 82 so that the workpiece changers 85, 86 can move through the workpiece opening 82 to change the workpiece.

[0096] The workpiece changers 85, 86 contain conventional gripper hands with which blanks and finished workpieces 27, 28 can be grasped and transported between a storage location located outside the work area 32 and the devices 29, 31, where they can be deposited or picked up or inserted into or removed from the spindles 42, 49.

[0097] As an alternative to workpiece changing under the portal beams 18 and 19, this workpiece changing system is very simple in design and easily accessible. It can be installed quickly and is easy to maintain because all components are easily accessible.

[0098] In Fig.4 also shows that the two gantry beams 18, 19 are connected to each other by a fixed cable bridge 87 extending in the third direction 35, via which the spindle heads 21, 24 and the tool spindles 22, 25 are electrically, pneumatically, and / or hydraulically connected to supply them with power and / or control signals. This cable bridge enables easy installation and maintenance of the electrical, pneumatic, and / or hydraulic connections, which are otherwise often installed within the machine tools.

[0099] The cable bridge 87 extends so far above the crossbeam 83 and the workpiece changers 85, 86 that sufficient free space remains for the workpiece changers 85, 86 moving in the second direction 35.

[0100] Finally, it should be mentioned that two spindle heads 21, 24 can also be provided for each portal beam 18, 19, for which tool changing magazines and tool storage magazines with their own reloading devices are then also provided on the other side of the working space 32, so to speak.
