Description

[0001] The invention relates to a coffee brewing device that uses a special coffee capsule whose capsule wall forms a heating element. All the ingredients for preparing hot coffee are contained within the capsule.

[0002] There are numerous capsule machines that use capsules to prepare coffee or espresso. Each capsule contains a small amount of ground coffee (approximately 5-6 grams). It also has an integrated filter that filters the coffee as it flows through. During preparation, the capsule is pierced at several points in the machine, and hot water flows in through one side while the coffee flows out the other. However, there are also capsules that already contain the water-coffee mixture. The coffee first enters a funnel and is then guided through a semi-tubular vessel to the cup. Unfortunately, this circuitous route cools the coffee to a greater or lesser degree, which is why the first cup is usually slightly cooler than, for example, the next cup if a second capsule is to be prepared immediately afterward.

[0003] EP 3 078 308 B1 describes a coffee extraction device comprising: a pump connected to a water supply source and pressurizing water supplied from the water supply source; a heater that heats water that has been pressurized by the pump; a coffee extraction unit that extracts coffee using water heated by the heater; and a dispensing element that discharges coffee extracted by the coffee extraction unit to the outside, wherein a first vent valve is provided between the heater and the coffee extraction unit, the first vent valve being closed during coffee extraction and open after coffee extraction, and wherein an ambient air inlet pipe is connected to the coffee extraction unit to introduce ambient air into the coffee extraction unit after coffee extraction.

[0004] DE 20 2011 001 661 U1 discloses a brewing or preparation chamber for a beverage preparation device, which is suitable for receiving and extracting a portion capsule filled with powdered or liquid beverage base materials and which consists entirely or partially of electrically conductive material, and the brewing or preparation chamber comprises a stationary first chamber part, which is provided with opening means for opening the portion capsule to the beverage outlet and is fluidly connected to a structure for the outflow of the beverage, and a second chamber part, which is horizontally or vertically movable relative to the first chamber part and is fluidly connected to an assembly for supplying the extraction liquid to the portion capsule and is provided with at least two piercing means for opening the portion capsule and for introducing the extraction liquid into the portion capsule.wherein the brewing or preparation chamber is open to receive a portion capsule and closed to extract the portion capsule.

[0005] US 5,325,765 A discloses a beverage filter cartridge. The beverage filter cartridge comprises an impermeable, puncture-proof base with a predetermined shape and an opening at one end; a self-supporting, wettable filter element arranged in the base, which engages sealingly with the opening in the base and has a different and smaller shape than the predetermined shape of the base, such that the filter element deviates from the base and divides the base into two sealed chambers: a first chamber for storing an extract of the beverage to be prepared and a second empty chamber for accessing the beverage after the beverage has been drawn from the filter by combining a liquid with the extract; and an impermeable, puncture-proof cover that engages sealingly with the opening in the base to form an impermeable cartridge.

[0006] EP 1554958 B1 concerns a coffee machine for brewing ground coffee packaged in capsules. These types of coffee machines are primarily used in households. Compared to conventional coffee machines with a grinder for grinding coffee beans, a fundamental advantage of these machines is that the use of capsules allows for the brewing of a high-quality coffee beverage, especially since the coffee powder has an optimal grind and is hermetically sealed in the capsules. Furthermore, these coffee machines are subject to relatively little contamination from coffee grounds.

[0007] EP 2476633 B1 relates to a capsule, a system, and a method for preparing a beverage. Here, the stiffening area is arranged, in particular rotationally symmetrically, around the penetration area, wherein the stiffening area is designed as at least a section-by-section depression, essentially in the circumferential direction, in the base, and is thus protected.

[0008] From DE 27 52 733 C2, a cartridge is known which contains a substance for the production of a beverage using a corresponding machine. This cartridge has a sealed housing with an acute-angled truncated cone shape and is usually made of aluminum sheet.

[0009] From WO 2010 / 041179 A2, a capsule for preparing beverages such as coffee is known. The capsule can contain ground coffee and has a top surface with a built-in weakening area.

[0010] From EP 1 944 248 A1, a plastic capsule is known which contains a powder for the production of a beverage using a corresponding machine. A reinforced wall is incorporated in a central area of the base of the capsule to prevent the base from bending immediately before penetration.

[0011] These machines have complex components, such as a thermoblock, high-pressure pump, monitoring elements, control unit, etc. One disadvantage of these machines is that the thermoblock, in particular, where the water is heated, requires descaling to varying degrees depending on the mineral content of the water supply. Furthermore, coffee residue accumulates in the machine parts after each use, which can lead to mold growth over time. The components that guide the coffee flow from the capsule to the cup are especially vulnerable. Additionally, the machines are relatively complex in their construction because they contain many elements that can be affected by hard water. The brewing unit is one of the most expensive components after the high-pressure pump.

[0012] The invention is based on the objective of creating a coffee brewing device (capsule coffee machine) that is very simple in design, consumes little electricity and yet can brew and dispense a hot beverage (coffee, tea), thereby replacing a coffee machine.

[0013] This problem is solved by a coffee brewing device having the features listed in claims 1 to 22.

[0014] Advantages of the device include: - it delivers a first-class beverage that is brewed directly, especially suitable for a very tasty coffee, - Simple design of the device, which can mimic a conventional coffee machine, - lightweight construction, so it can be taken and carried anywhere, - no mold-forming areas present, - no risk of limescale build-up, - ideally suited for outdoor leisure activities.

[0015] Exemplary embodiments of the invention are described with reference to the Fig. 1 to 3 explained. They show: Fig. 1 the device and a capsule with a spiral heating element built into the capsule wall, Fig. 2 the coffee capsule, whose capsule wall forms a heating element, Fig. 3. The double-chamber construction of the coffee capsule.

[0016] This device (coffee capsule machine) is shaped like a plate and consists of a robustly constructed cup lid 1 that is placed over a coffee cup 2. It uses special coffee capsules 3, whose capsule wall 4 also serves as, or incorporates, a heating element 5. The capsule 3 here no longer consists of a homogeneous wall structure, but rather the wall has narrow conductive traces 6 that are either arranged parallel along the capsule and, for example, meet at a point at the tip of the capsule, or simply form U-shaped loops, or form a heating coil 7 around the capsule.

[0017] This coffee capsule can brew the coffee directly inside, and a device built for such a capsule 3 does not require a brewing unit or heating block, nor a high-pressure pump to pump water into the capsule. The capsule 3 contains two separate chambers.

[0018] The Fig.Figure 1 shows the capsule, which contained not only the coffee powder 8 but also the water 9. This capsule has a double-chamber design and consists of two chambers: a water chamber 10 and a coffee powder chamber 11. The capsule 3 may be slightly larger than conventional coffee capsules, weighs approximately 50g including its contents, and has an internal volume of approximately 30-50cm³. 3The capsule 3 contains two integrated chambers separated by a thin partition 12 equipped with predetermined breaking points 13. When the capsule is positioned vertically in a brewing position, or when its longitudinal axis 14 is oriented vertically, the upper chamber is the water chamber 10, while the lower chamber is the coffee powder chamber 11 (or tea powder chamber). The partition can break or tear under a specific overpressure in the water chamber 10, allowing the water to mix with the dry coffee powder. The heating element is integrated into the water chamber wall and is itself a conductive heating coil. This element can also be a thin spiral heating conductor integrated directly into the capsule wall or made of the same material as the capsule wall. The capsule has a second predetermined breaking point (outlet breaking point 15), or a perforable film, which is installed at the very bottom (e.g., at the capsule tip 16) in the vertical brewing position. This film will only tear or break under higher pressure inside the capsule, releasing the contents (the coffee) into the cup. This can be an aluminum foil with radial predetermined breaking points arranged in a ring or radial lines from a central point. A coffee filter 17 is installed directly above the outlet breaking point, and its function is to filter the coffee-water mixture that flows out of the capsule. The capsule has two electrically insulated electrical contact points (contact pads) 19 or concentrically arranged electrical contact rings 20 on its outer wall, or preferably on its top surface 18, which are electrically connected to the heating element in the capsule wall. The electrical contact points are preferably constructed in the form of two concentric rings because this ensures an isometric design, and regardless of how the capsule is placed in the machine, the contact points can always establish an electrical connection via two contact pins or electrodes 21, which are integrated into a hinged top cover 22. The top cover is connected to the cup lid at its edge by a hinge 23. Because the dry coffee powder and the water (sterile or distilled water!) are strictly separated, the capsule contents have a long shelf life and can be stored or kept in a manner comparable to conventional coffee capsules. If distilled water is present in the water chamber 10, then some ingredients should be added to the coffee powder 8 to compensate for elements missing in the water (e.g., salt, calcium, minerals, etc.).This capsule also features robust inner walls that can withstand approximately 4-5 bar. The lower perforation is designed to break at approximately 1.5-3 bar, allowing the coffee to flow downwards. The partition / film 12 inside the capsule can be equipped with perforations 13 in the center or at the edge, through which hot water, under pressure, enters the coffee grounds chamber in several jets, thoroughly agitating the grounds and thus creating a relatively homogeneous mixture.

[0019] To prepare the coffee, a special capsule is inserted into this simple machine, which consists, for example, of nothing more than a sturdy cup lid with a funnel or capsule-holding chamber (capsule container) 24, two contact pins or electrodes 21, a switch 25, and a power source 26 (or electrical connection 27). Once the capsule is placed in the funnel, the user closes the lid, which contains two electrical electrodes or contact pins. The contact electrodes or pins may be spring-loaded and, when the lid is closed, make direct contact with the capsule's electrical contacts. Because the capsule has two concentric metal or foil rings (which can also be aluminum foil rings, for example) as electrical contacts, it is not necessary to pay close attention to the position of the contacts when inserting the capsule. The only important thing is that the capsule is oriented with the narrower surface / point facing downwards. The concentric rings are attached to the wider surface with the capsule rim 28. The cup is placed under the lid. After the lid is closed, the user activates switch 25, which completes a circuit from a power supply (or a battery) to the capsule's heating element. The heating element, embedded in the capsule wall, then heats the water in the water chamber almost instantly. Because the amount of water is relatively small (approximately 15-25 ml for an espresso), very high temperatures, exceeding 100°C, can be reached within seconds. An electronic control 29 ensures that the current is automatically interrupted after a short time (e.g., 10-20 seconds). As soon as the water reaches approximately...When heated to 101-105°C, the separating film / wall 12 between the chambers breaks down, and the water from the water chamber mixes with the coffee grounds below. The temperature drops abruptly due to the mixing, but then rises again within seconds to approximately 102-105°C, generating enough steam pressure to rupture the lower, predetermined breaking film. From then on, the coffee, espresso, or tea flows into a cup 2 below. The coffee 30 is brewed piping hot, fresh, and poured directly from the capsule into the cup. The electronic control, which stops the brewing process after approximately 10-20 seconds, or interrupts the electrical circuit to the heating element in the capsule, protects against damage to the capsule or the machine. Of course, a temperature sensor and a regulator can also be integrated into the machine, allowing for slight adjustments to the coffee temperature and temperature monitoring of the brewing process. The machine can be equipped with a rechargeable power source / battery 26. A power connection 27 for a charger should also be integrated. USB ports are ideally suited for this purpose, as any USB power adapter could then be used.

[0020] Because this machine is quite simple in design, it weighs very little and can be built very small. The housing can be constructed almost like a to-go cup lid (though somewhat sturdier), containing the funnel 24 (which can also be made of wire mesh or a ring holder) for the capsule 3. This cup lid is positioned over a cup placed underneath and then placed on top. No piercing needles or perforators, no water supply, and, most importantly, no heating block or high-pressure pump are required. This makes the device extremely simple, while still prioritizing the quality of the coffee preparation / espresso. Despite its extremely simple design, the device brews first-class coffee / espresso that is piping hot and tastes delicious. The machine weighs very little and can, for example, weigh less than approximately 100g. The battery accounts for most of the device's weight.Because the power consumption is relatively low (approx. 10-20W), or the battery is only used for a short time (approx. 10 seconds), the user can prepare approx. 50-100 espressos with one battery charge, which is sufficient for a medium-sized group of people on a nature hike, for example.

[0021] The power button on the machine's housing activates the heating element in capsule 3, causing the water in capsule 3 to heat up very quickly. The heating element must not dissolve any metal residue in the water during heating, as this would render the coffee undrinkable.

[0022] Unlike current technology, this innovative design integrates the heating element directly into the capsule. This eliminates the need for a separate water heater in the machine. The capsule's dual-chamber construction (a separate water chamber and coffee grounds chamber) further simplifies the device, as it also eliminates the need for a water tank. The coffee is brewed entirely within the capsule. Heating the water directly inside the capsule creates steam pressure, which forces the contents of the capsule downwards through the integrated filter and directly into the cup. This significantly simplifies the design, making it ideally suited for portable use.

[0023] Naturally, additional features or elements can be integrated into the machine, such as a touchscreen, a Wi-Fi interface (Wi-Fi / Bluetooth module 35, for whatever purpose), and a USB interface that can be used not only for charging but also for bidirectional data exchange with a PC or smartphone. The data exchange function with a PC would be interesting for research, coffee brewing process optimization, or statistical purposes. This would allow each user to determine the optimal current flow values in the heating element for the coffee brewing process that best suit their taste and adjust them via a built-in controller in the device or via the interface.

[0024] The electric current is conducted into the capsule through two contact points on its exterior, via two electrodes or contact pins on the machine, and heats the heating element embedded in the capsule wall (or the capsule wall itself forms the heating element) instantaneously. In the capsule, which features a double-chamber design, the contents (coffee grounds and water) only mix once the pressure in the water chamber exceeds the breaking point of the barrier / divider. The mixture is then heated again very quickly, generating a further, slightly higher overpressure within the capsule. Because the capsule is located in the funnel or capsule-receiving chamber of the machine (cup lid), it is somewhat protected and cannot easily expand uncontrollably or burst. This allows the capsule to withstand higher pressure than if it were outside the chamber. The top lid, which is closed for brewing, provides protection from above. The current flows through the heating element only very briefly, heating it to approximately 110-130°C. This is usually sufficient to heat about 25ml of water-coffee mixture to over 103°C in a flash. The heat creates steam pressure inside the capsule, which rises rapidly. Depending on the heating element's design, heating the contents and building up pressure takes anywhere from a few seconds to several dozen seconds. The overpressure causes the capsule's tip to break at a predetermined breaking point, perforate, or, in the case of radially arranged break lines, open in a ring shape. The coffee then flows directly into the cup through the capsule's tip, which opens on its own due to the overpressure.A tiny area at the tip of the capsule can be equipped with a flow moderator / disruptor / retarder in the form of a small component, constructed like a firm foam (mini-filter), which slightly slows and swirls the flow of coffee (or tea), preventing a sharp jet from shooting into the cup. Placed on the cup, this device acts like a cover or lid, preventing splashes. However, the flow moderator / disruptor is usually sufficient on its own. The pressure inside the capsule increases to several bar within seconds, forcing the contents downwards, as there is no other way for the coffee to flow out. The capsule is well protected from the sides and top by the funnel walls and the top lid, leaving only the downward path through the capsule tip open.

[0025] This invention represents a completely new dimension in the coffee machine sector. The coffee capsule is designed in such a way that it can almost replace an entire coffee machine on its own! The heating element is etched into the capsule wall, and the 25ml of water and 6g of coffee / espresso powder are already contained and separated by a partition. Simply touch the two contact aluminum rings with the two electrical pins of a battery or rechargeable battery, and the piping hot coffee flows into a cup. You must not touch the capsule itself, as it will be too hot. Instead, the cup lid, which has a hole in the center or a built-in funnel, is placed over the cup, the capsule is inserted into the hole / funnel, and the electrical contacts are energized (e.g., 5V and 2A). This is easily achieved by lowering an upper lid, which is connected to the cup lid via a hinge. As soon as the top lid is lowered, the two contact pins touch the capsule's electrical contacts and, when the switch is pressed, complete a circuit that heats the heating element. The battery is to be installed on the top lid. Pressing the switch completes the circuit. This would be enough to get a hot coffee within 10 seconds, without any other aids. This coffee machine, consisting only of a lid, battery, and a double-chamber capsule, would be the simplest espresso machine in the world actually capable of delivering a very hot, freshly brewed espresso. Therefore, this version is ideally suited for taking with you and could be produced as a portable model.

[0026] During manufacturing, a small tube can be built into the capsule, which further simplifies the flow of coffee into the cup.

[0027] The heating element in the capsule should be as simple as possible. The aluminum capsule wall can serve as the heating element if it is cut into a spiral and insulated, or if it has thin conductive strips arranged along the insulated wall, allowing the current to flow as if in a spiral or in narrow conductors with high electrical resistance. The pressure is generated solely by the heat within the capsule, and the resulting steam displaces the water-coffee powder mixture from the capsule.

[0028] As soon as the water-filled capsule is powered on, the water mixture heats up within seconds. The steam inside the capsule does the rest. An electronic control unit can be installed to monitor the power supply and switch it off after a few seconds, preventing the heating element from melting. A temperature sensor can also be installed in the capsule's receiving chamber / funnel, but this is not strictly necessary.

[0029] The machine's design allows for very fast coffee preparation. It can, for example, prepare a really hot espresso in less than 10 seconds.

[0030] The capsule must withstand the heat of the internal heating element, or the capsule wall must be made of a material that wouldn't melt at 150-200°C. Aluminum is suitable for this purpose. The capsule-holding chamber in the cup lid should also be heat-resistant. Nevertheless, the machine can be equipped with a temperature monitor or current regulator to prevent the heating element in the capsule from overheating. Generally, it would be perfectly sufficient if the heating element could only be heated to a maximum of 130-140°C outdoors. When immersed in water, it won't reach this temperature, but it can heat the water inside the capsule to over 100°C.

[0031] The machine's capsule chamber is designed to prevent capsule expansion, therefore it should be sturdily constructed and made of a heat-resistant material. Ceramic, metal, or certain heat-resistant plastics are suitable for this purpose. Long and narrow coffee capsules work very well here.

[0032] Cigarette-shaped capsules can be used. A simple electrical conductor (e.g., made from parts or strips of the capsule wall) could be installed inside, which would heat up quickly due to its electrical resistance. The contact points could be located at either end of the cigarette-shaped capsule or both at one end. Whether the capsule is made of metal foil, wood, paper, bamboo, or heat-resistant plastic is left to the manufacturer's discretion. The capsule itself does not necessarily need to withstand very high pressure. Its stability is enhanced by the funnel / capsule receiving chamber, so a few bar of pressure resistance is sufficient. It can withstand higher pressures when inside the capsule receiving chamber because it is supported on almost all sides by the walls of the funnel / chamber.Generally, pressure values of 3-5 bar are perfectly sufficient because these values are generated directly in the capsule and not by an external pump that would suffer significant pressure losses through the lines. The 3-5 bar pressure generated directly here is almost equivalent to that of a pressure pump in a coffee machine that generates 20 bar.

[0033] Because the capsule already has the heating element integrated, one might assume it would be more environmentally harmful than conventional capsules, but this isn't necessarily the case. The heating element consists of a metal spiral that is either part of the capsule wall or integrated into it. Integration into the capsule wall is an optimal solution because no extra metal parts are required. This simply requires a special cut in the conventional capsule wall, transforming it into narrower conductor tracks that can be heated by an electric current. That's all that's needed. This doesn't make the capsule heavier or more complex to construct. The narrow aluminum conductor tracks (windings or parallel loops) that are etched into the capsule wall and form the heating element conduct the current directly from the contact points and heat up in the process. The conductor tracks can be, for example, made of aluminum. The coils, shaped like a band approximately 1 mm thick or slightly wider, with a total length of about 15-30 cm, are wound against the capsule wall. This provides sufficient electrical resistance to heat them up instantly. However, they should not be subjected to such a high current that they melt or burn, but only heated to approximately 110-130°C, a temperature they almost never reach due to the water inside the capsule. A current flow controller regulates the precise current and voltage, ensuring that the desired water temperatures of over 100°C are achieved. The coffee-infused water in the capsule heats up within seconds, generating the necessary pressure to open the downward-facing tip of the capsule and allow the coffee to flow directly into the cup.The filter at the bottom of the capsule prevents the coffee from escaping explosively and slows down the flow rate slightly, so that it can land calmly in the cup without splashing.

[0034] The electronic control system limits the current to precise values, thus protecting both the user and the machine from burns. The outer wall of the capsule chamber is designed to insulate against the heat emitted by the capsule. This allows the machine to be handled safely. The outer wall is designed to remain only slightly warm, even after using several capsules in succession and preparing multiple coffees.

[0035] With slight modifications, the machine could also take spheres of compressed coffee powder and brew them into coffee. However, it would then need to be equipped with a water tank and a heating element in the shape of an injection needle that pierces the sphere.

[0036] Because the battery and contact pins are integrated into the lid, coffee brewing can be initiated directly by touching the capsule's electrical contacts, even without a control unit or switch. This simply requires lowering the lid and touching the capsule's electrical contacts with its contact pins.

[0037] The cup lid can be equipped with concentrically arranged indentations that would be suitable for different cup sizes.

[0038] The lid of the cup has a funnel in the center into which the capsule is inserted. Alternatively, a hole can be made into which the capsule is inserted, but this does not provide the capsule with any additional stability.

[0039] The rim of the capsule, on whose surface the capsule's electrical contacts are also integrated, prevents the capsule from sinking completely into the cup. When electricity is passed through the electrical contacts, the heating element inside the capsule heats up and the brewing process can begin. However, care must be taken not to touch the capsule itself, as it is too hot and could cause burns. Instead, the entire cup lid should be lifted off, and the capsule can then be set aside to cool down.

[0040] The heating element is an integral part of the capsule wall and can take the form of narrow conductive traces made of aluminum foil. These U-shaped traces can be partially parallel within the capsule wall, passing through the capsule tip and connecting at their ends to one of the capsule's contact points. Alternatively, they can be constructed as heating coils made of the capsule wall material, or even be an integral part of the capsule wall. The coil, made from an aluminum strip of the capsule wall, is connected at both ends to the electrical contact points.

[0041] The capsule doesn't necessarily have to be made of aluminum. It can be made of wood, paper, or bamboo, for example. This capsule wall can also easily be fitted with aluminum foil heating elements. The foil, which is shaped or cut like a heating coil, can be attached to the inner wall of the capsule or fixed to the outer surface. Placing the aluminum heating coil inside the capsule allows the coffee to brew faster. The aluminum coil heating foil can easily be heated up to 200°C by the electrical current. Wood can withstand these temperatures for short periods, as can bamboo or paper. Aluminum only melts at 660°C, so there is plenty of headroom.

[0042] The special capsule used here greatly simplifies the coffee machine. A heating element, which typically consumes a lot of electricity (approx. 2000W), and a high-pressure pump are completely absent.

[0043] Because the coffee machine has a relatively simple design, it and the capsule are very practical for outdoor and leisure activities. In addition, it boasts very low power consumption compared to conventional machines. The thermal energy is transferred directly and almost without loss to the coffee capsule's contents, allowing the brewing process to be completed in seconds. The capsule itself is practically a coffee machine, or rather a simple device for preparing a coffee beverage. However, it's also conceivable to prepare other hot drinks, such as tea, using tea-based tea in such a capsule.
