Data processing device for the recognition of handwritten characters, comprising: an image acquisition interface for receiving image data of a handwritten document, a document structure unit for determining a handwritten area and a document field assigned to this area, a writing profile generation unit for generating a document-related writing profile from characters whose recognition value reaches a predetermined first threshold, a character evaluation unit for determining at least one character candidate based on the image data, the document field and the writing profile, an uncertainty determination unit for determining an image sub-area if a character candidate's recognition value is below a predetermined second threshold.a post-capture control unit for generating a control signal for re-capturing the specific image area under different recording conditions compared to the first image capture, and a fusion unit for combining the image data of the first image capture and the re-capture for the final determination of the handwritten character.
