Description

[0001] The invention generally relates to the field of printed product production. In particular, the invention relates to the finishing of printed products with foils.

[0002] Print finishing is generally understood as the modification of the surface of printed products. Typically, such finishing is aesthetic in nature, altering the surface's haptic and visual appearance. The surface can also be protected against wear, fading, or dirt absorption, for example, to improve the durability of the printed product. One example of such a process is sealing, in which the printed product is fully laminated on both sides with a plastic film. Single-sided, full-surface lamination with plastic films is also widely used in the graphic arts industry.

[0003] One print finishing process involves the local application of varnish to smooth coated areas or add shine to the surface with a varnish layer. Screen printing and inkjet printing are among the techniques used for this process. UV-curable varnishes are particularly suitable for inkjet printing, as they can be cured quickly after application and also avoid the risk of the varnish solidifying in the print head nozzles.

[0004] Another technique used in print finishing is the application of foils to the printed product. Special visual effects can be achieved with metallized foils, for example, to create gold or silver lettering and decorations. An embossing effect is often incorporated to further emphasize the metallized areas both visually and tactilely. A common method for this is hot foil stamping. In this process, a coating on the underside of the carrier foil is bonded to the substrate using a heated metal die under pressure. Simultaneously, the metal die creates an embossed design on the substrate. After the embossing, the carrier foil is removed, leaving only the coating on the substrate to be finished. To create a metallized finish, at least one layer of the coating on the carrier foil must be a metal layer, usually produced by vapor deposition with aluminum.

[0005] US Patent 2010 / 0212821 A1 discloses a method for producing a relief using film lamination. In this process, a curable adhesive is applied to the substrate, and a film is pressed onto it so that it comes into contact with the adhesive. By applying energy during the pressing process, the adhesive bonds to the film.

[0006] As with the aforementioned process, the foil generally forms the top layer, or rather, the surface of the finished printed product. This is often desirable for aesthetic reasons. On the other hand, it would also be desirable to combine foil-laminated surfaces with lacquered surface areas. However, this process is often only possible in two steps, for example, if the station used for applying the adhesive to the foil is also used for applying the lacquer. If the foil is to be embossed onto an already lacquered surface in a second process step, this can be achieved either by using an embossable lacquer to which the foil adheres, or by removing the lacquer in the area intended for foil embossing. The main problem in the latter case is that, in the event of registration inaccuracies, the foil will overlap with the lacquer at the edges. In DE 199 51 404 A1, a plastic sheet is coated in certain areas with a radiation-curable lacquer and then heated to a temperature higher than the softening temperature of the plastic but lower than the glass transition temperature of the lacquer, so that only the uncoated areas of the sheet become sticky. A film pressed onto the sheet adheres only to the sticky areas and not to the non-sticky lacquered areas. DE 44 40 762 C1 discloses a method in which film-laminated surface areas are combined with siliconized surface areas on a transparent plastic sheet.

[0007] The invention is therefore based on the objective of providing a method that enables print finishing with a combination of lacquered and foil-laminated areas, thereby avoiding the aforementioned problems. This objective is achieved by the subject matter of the independent claims. Advantageous embodiments are specified in the dependent claims.

[0008] Accordingly, the invention provides a method for finishing printed products in which a paper or cardboard substrate is partially coated on one side with a radiation-curing varnish, such that at least one coated area and at least one uncoated area are present on the side, and wherein a film is subsequently applied to the varnish-coated side and bonded to the substrate, wherein the film is designed to bond to the substrate material but not to the varnish, so that the bonding of the film occurs selectively in the at least one uncoated area, and wherein, after bonding, the film is cut at the dividing line between the coated and uncoated areas, so that a substrate is obtained which has at least one varnish-coated area on one side and an adjacent area not coated with this varnish.in this area not coated with lacquer, a film is bonded to the substrate, the edge of which borders the lacquered area.

[0009] The invention thus makes it possible to create a printed product surface divided into lacquer-coated and foil-laminated areas, with both the lacquer and the foil being directly bonded to the substrate material. This also allows for new aesthetic design possibilities, using both transparent and opaque lacquer. In general, a further development of the invention therefore allows for the use of either a transparent or an opaque lacquer. According to a further development of the invention, at least two different lacquers can be used, which are applied to different areas of the side of the substrate.

[0010] The substrate processed according to the invention can represent the printed product itself. However, further processing can also take place up to the finished printed product. Such further processing can include cutting, but also printing, and in particular also further finishing steps. According to another embodiment of the invention, the substrate serves as an intermediate substrate and is used to structure the film on the carrier based on the pattern of the varnish by transferring areas of the film coating to the intermediate substrate. The film structured in this way is then transferred to a second substrate in a further step. The pattern of the transferred film then corresponds to the pattern of the varnish on the intermediate substrate.

[0011] Accordingly, the invention also provides a method for finishing printed products, in which a paper or cardboard substrate is partially coated on one side with a radiation-curing varnish, such that at least one coated area and at least one uncoated area are present on the side, and in which a film is subsequently applied to the varnish-coated side and bonded to the substrate, wherein the film is designed to bond to the substrate material but not to the varnish, so that the bonding of the film occurs selectively in the at least one uncoated area, and in which, after bonding, the film is cut at the dividing line between the coated and uncoated areas, so that two complementary parts are obtained, wherein a first part is bonded to the substrate, and wherein, after cutting, the second part is bonded to a second,or another substrate. The first substrate has at least one area coated with lacquer on one side and an adjacent area not coated with this lacquer, wherein in this area not coated with the lacquer, the film is glued to the substrate, the edge of which borders the area coated with lacquer. The second part of the film does not have to be glued completely to the second substrate. Rather, the second substrate can also have selectively coated areas with lacquer, to which the film does not adhere, so that another part of the film remains and has on the second substrate at least one area coated with lacquer and an adjacent area not coated with this lacquer, wherein in this area not coated with the lacquer, the film is glued to the substrate.whose edge borders the lacquer-coated area. In short, the part of the film not bonded to the substrate forming an auxiliary base is at least partially bonded to a second substrate, so that the second substrate has film-covered areas that are at least partially complementary to the film-covered areas of the substrate forming an auxiliary base.

[0012] The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the figures.

[0013] They show: Fig. 1 a device for processing documents for printed products, Fig. 2 an example of a composite of carrier film 7 and film 6, Fig. 3 a printed product, Fig. 4 Steps in the production of a printed product using an auxiliary substrate.

[0014] Fig. 1Figure 1 shows an embodiment of a device for carrying out the method according to the invention. According to the method, the device comprises a device for finishing printed products. a device for partially coating one side 20 of a substrate 2 for a printed product with a varnish 4, so that at least one coated area 22 and at least one uncoated area 21 is present on the side 20, a film 6 for bonding to the substrate, as well as a device for applying and bonding the film 6 to the substrate 2 on the side 20 coated with the varnish 4, wherein the film 6 is designed such that it bonds to the material of the substrate 2, but not to the varnish 4, so that the bonding of the film 4 takes place selectively in at least one uncoated area 21, as well as a device for separating the film 4 after bonding at the dividing line, or boundary 23, between the coated and uncoated areas 21, 22, so that a substrate 2 is obtained which has at least one area 22 of a side 20 coated with varnish 4 and an adjacent,The area 21 is not coated with this lacquer 4, wherein a film 6 is bonded to the substrate in this area not coated with lacquer 4, the edge 60 of which borders the area 22 coated with lacquer 4.

[0015] The materials used are generally those made of paper or cardboard, such as are commonly used for printed products. Other materials are conceivable, but not according to the invention, such as label substrates, plastic sheets or films, composite materials, fabrics or nonwovens.

[0016] Typically, the film 6 is very thin and tears easily. This is advantageous simply to facilitate separation at the boundary of the uncoated area 21. To enable handling of the thin film 6, a preferred embodiment of the invention generally provides that the film 6 is applied to a carrier film 7, wherein, to bond the film 6, the carrier film is pressed against the substrate 2 with the side on which the film 6 is arranged. In general, therefore, an embodiment provides that the device includes a means of pressing a carrier film 7, on which the film 6 is applied, against the substrate 2 in order to transfer the film 6 from the carrier film 7 to the substrate 2.

[0017] In the example of Fig. 1The carrier film 7 is wound into a roll with the film 6 to be bonded and is unwound while the substrates 2 are guided through the device 1. Pressure is applied by means of a pressure roller 17, over which the carrier film 7 is guided. As the carrier film 7 is guided over the pressure roller 17, it is also lifted from the substrate 2 after the film 6 has bonded to it. This causes the film 6 to separate, with the areas not bonded to the substrate 2 remaining adhered to the carrier film 7. The pressure roller 17 thus also serves to separate the film 6 after bonding at the boundary 23 between the varnish-coated and uncoated areas 21, 22.

[0018] In general, as in the example shown, a conveyor device 12 can be provided to move the substrates 2 past the devices for partially coating them with a varnish 4 and for applying and bonding the film 6 to the substrate 2 on the side 20 coated with the varnish 4.

[0019] The conveying device 12 comprises, according to an embodiment as in Fig. 1 shown a conveyor belt 15. The documents 2 in the form of sheets of paper or cardboard are placed on the conveyor belt 15 by a sheet feeder 13 and, after processing, are removed and stacked again by a sheet delivery device 14.

[0020] In contrast to the depicted method, a roll-to-roll processing is also conceivable, in which individual sheet-shaped substrates are not fed in, but rather a wound, web-shaped substrate 2 is unwound from a roll, processed according to the invention by applying lacquer 4 and film 6, and then rewound. According to one embodiment, separation into sheets after processing of the web-shaped substrate is also possible.

[0021] According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the production of a varnish layer 40 by applying the varnish 4 in sections is carried out using a digital printing process. In particular, a further development of the invention provides that the device for partially coating one side 20 of the substrate 2 comprises an inkjet printhead 9, which dispenses the varnish 4 drop by drop onto the substrate 2 in response to control signals from a control unit 8. The partial coating of the substrate 2 with varnish 4 by ejecting droplets of varnish 4 from the inkjet printhead 9, in response to control signals from the control unit 8, is carried out in particular while the substrate 2 is moved relative to the inkjet printhead 9. In this way, the droplets are placed side by side on the surface and can cover a larger continuous area of the substrate 2.It may not be necessary for the droplets to form a closed layer as long as the lacquer prevents the film 6 from adhering to the coated area 22.

[0022] In principle, all methods that enable structured varnish application are suitable for the purposes of the invention. These include, among others, flexographic printing, pad printing, gravure printing, and screen printing. According to one embodiment of the invention, the varnish is therefore applied using one of the aforementioned methods. In principle, different printing methods can also be combined. For example, varnish can first be applied using screen printing, and then further pattern elements can be added using another printing method, such as the aforementioned inkjet printing.

[0023] The device for partially coating one side 20 of a substrate 2 can therefore, alternatively or additionally to the inkjet process, also include a device for applying the varnish 4 using at least one of the following processes: gravure printing, flexographic printing, pad printing, or screen printing. Different printing processes can also be combined.

[0024] According to the invention, a radiation-curing lacquer 4 is used and hardened to form a lacquer layer 40 by the action of high-energy radiation, preferably UV light. For this purpose, a UV light source 11 is provided in the illustrated example, the light of which is directed onto the substrate 2.

[0025] Fig. 2Figure 1 shows an example of a composite consisting of carrier film 7 and film 6. The film 6 can itself be a composite with several layers. A metallization 62 on a film layer 61 is particularly preferred. The metallization 62 can be covered by a cover layer 64. An adhesive layer 63 is provided on one side of the film 6. This can, among other things, be designed as a heat-sealable layer and bonds the film 6 to a substrate under the influence of temperature and pressure.

[0026] The film 6 is attached to the carrier film 7 by a release agent 59. This allows, on the one hand, fixation to the carrier film, and on the other hand, also detachment when the adhesive layer 63 is bonded to the substrate. A suitable release agent is, for example, a wax layer.

[0027] In Fig. 3 Figure 3 shows a cross-section of a printed product 3 as it is available with the invention.

[0028] The printed product 3, which can be produced using a method or device according to the invention, has a varnish layer 40 on one side 20 of the substrate 2, wherein the varnish layer 40 partially covers the surface of the side 20 of the substrate 2, such that at least one area 22 is coated with the varnish layer 40 and at least one adjacent area 21 of the side 20 is free of the varnish layer 40, wherein the varnish layer 40 is raised, so that the surface of the adjacent area 21 is lower than the surface of the varnish layer 40, and wherein in this adjacent area 21 a film 6 is applied to the substrate 2 and bonded to it, wherein the edge 60 of the film 6 lies at the boundary 23 between coated area 22 and adjacent uncoated area 21.

[0029] The surface of the printed product is thus equipped with alternating areas that are either coated with varnish 4 or laminated with film 6. The manufacturing process achieves a precise fit of the film 6 into the shape of the uncoated areas 21. This printed product offers new design possibilities compared to, for example, the process according to US 2010 / 0212821 A1. For instance, in processes where the film is applied to and bonded with a varnish layer, the film itself is raised. However, if the film 6 and the varnish layer are applied side by side and adjacent to each other, a relief structure can be smoothed out.According to a further development of the invention, the foil 6 is designed to at least reduce, and optionally completely compensate for, the height difference between the surface of the lacquer layer 40 and the surface of the substrate 2 in the uncoated area 21, thus creating a substantially flat surface. If, according to a further embodiment of the invention, the lacquer layer has a greater thickness than the thickness of the foil 6, an effect can also be achieved that would otherwise only be possible by embossing the foil. As already mentioned, the invention can also be used particularly for metallized foils. In this case, the result is an appearance in which the metallized and lacquered areas directly border each other.

[0030] Preferably, the thickness of the lacquer layer 40 is in the range of 1 to 100 micrometers, particularly preferably 2 to 50 micrometers. Generally, but especially with smaller layer thicknesses, the film 6 can also be thicker than the lacquer layer 40, so that the surface of the film 6 is higher than the surface of the lacquer layer 40, or so that the film elements form raised areas.

[0031] It is evident to those skilled in the art that the invention is not limited to the examples shown in the figures, but can be varied in numerous ways within the scope of the following claims. For example, two or more different varnishes and / or two or more different films can be combined for the invention to expand the design possibilities of print finishing.

[0032] Unlike the embodiments described above, the part of the film 6 not bonded to the substrate 2 can also be used for print finishing. In this embodiment, the varnish pattern on the substrate is used to apply a film shaped like the varnish pattern to another substrate. This second substrate can then form the actual finished printed product. The method is based, as in other embodiments, on a substrate 2 being partially coated on one side 20 with a varnish 4 in such a way that at least one coated region 22 and at least one uncoated region 21 are present on the side 20, and wherein the film 6 is then applied to the side coated with the varnish 4 and glued to the substrate, wherein the film 6 is designed such that it glues to the material of the substrate but not to the varnish, so that the film is glued selectively in at least one uncoated region 21, and wherein the film is separated after glueing at the dividing line between the coated and uncoated region. Partial image (a) of the . Fig. 4Figure 1 shows the substrate 2 partially coated with film 6. This forms an auxiliary substrate such that, for the finishing process, the remaining, complementary part 66 of film 6 is used instead of the part 65 that is not bonded to substrate 2. This second, complementary part 66 is shown in sub-figure (b). As already described, it is advantageous to provide film 6 on a carrier film 7. After the removal of part 65, the complementary part 66 of film 6 remains on the carrier film 7, as shown in sub-figure (b).

[0033] In a second step, this part 66 of the film 6 is then at least partially bonded to another substrate 25, so that the further substrate 25 has film-covered areas 66 that are at least partially complementary to the film-covered areas 65 of the substrate 2 forming the auxiliary substrate. This complementarily patterned substrate 25 is shown in partial figure (c).

[0034] According to a further development of the embodiment with an auxiliary substrate, the film is applied to a carrier film as already described, wherein to bond the film 6, the carrier film 7 is pressed against the base 2 with the side on which the film 6 is arranged. If the surface of the film can be over-embossed multiple times with the same film, one and the same auxiliary substrate can be used multiple times. Then, in a first step, the still unused film on the auxiliary substrate is freed from the unpainted areas of the film 6 and, in a second step, the remaining part of the film 6 is transferred from the carrier film 7 to the substrate to be finished. For example, in a machine provided for this purpose, the auxiliary substrate can be permanently installed in a station and the film is always moved by the format length, pre-structured on the auxiliary substrate, moved to the next station and the target substrate is finished there.Especially for small print runs, a cliché for foil finishing can be produced and used cheaply.

[0035] According to an additional training, as in the previous example, film 6 is adhered to the carrier film 7 by pressing it onto the substrate 2. The carrier film 7 also forms the substrate, which in this case acts as the auxiliary substrate. For this purpose, film 6 is transferred to a different area of the carrier film. This other area should not contain any further film 6. This other area could, for example, be the back of the carrier film that is not covered with film 6. Alternatively, the other area could be an area from which film 6 has previously been removed by transferring the film.

[0036] The method according to these embodiments therefore provides that the film is transferred from a carrier film to the further substrate 25, wherein the carrier film has a first surface section which is provided with the film 6, as well as a second surface section not provided with film 6, wherein the second surface section of the carrier film 7 is partially coated with the lacquer, so that at least one coated area 22 and at least one uncoated area 21 are present on this surface section, and wherein the film is transferred from the first surface section to the second surface section at its uncoated area 21, so that a part of the film remains on the first surface section, and wherein the remaining film on the first surface section is then bonded to the further substrate 25.

[0037] Fig. 5Figure 1 shows a device with which documents 25 according to this embodiment can be provided with a film 6. The film 6 is, as in the case described in Figure 2, Fig. 1 The illustrated embodiment is applied to a carrier film 7. The carrier film 7 simultaneously serves as the substrate 2, which is coated with lacquer 4 on the side of the carrier film 7 not covered with film 6. The opposite sides of the carrier film 7 thus form a first surface section 70 with film 6 and a second surface section 71 without film. The coating with lacquer 4 is carried out as in the embodiment shown. Fig. 1The embodiment shown includes an inkjet printhead 9. The carrier film 7 is guided over several rollers 27 such that the two sides, i.e., the surface sections 70, face each other. A pressure roller 17 presses the two surface sections 70, 71 together and transfers the film 6 onto the second surface section 71 in the areas that are not coated with varnish 4 or the varnish layer 40. The carrier film 7, with the film 6 transferred to the second surface section 71, is then pressed and transferred by means of another pressure roller onto the further substrates 25 transported by the conveyor belt 15. As in the embodiment shown in Fig. 1In the illustrated embodiment, the documents transported by the conveyor belt can be printed materials and / or sheets of paper or cardboard. This embodiment creates a pattern of the film 6 on the further substrate 25, which corresponds to the pattern of the lacquer 4 on the substrate 2, or more specifically, on the carrier film 7. The device 1 is therefore generally, without being limited to the illustrated example, designed in this embodiment to apply a layer of lacquer 40 to the carrier film 7 on a second surface section 71 not covered with film 6, and to transfer the film 6 from a first surface section 70 covered with film 6 to the areas of the second surface section 71 not covered with lacquer 4.Then, as explained, the device 1 can also be further configured to transfer this transferred film 6 to a further base 25, in particular a printed product and / or a sheet of paper or cardboard.

[0038] Both embodiments can also be combined by transferring the film 6 onto substrates 2 in two steps. In the first step, the substrates 2 are coated with varnish, so that part of the film 6 is transferred to the uncoated areas. In a second step, another part of the film is transferred to further substrates. If these further substrates do not have a varnish layer that would prevent the transfer, a complementary pattern of the film is then formed on these further substrates. Such multiple and, in particular, complementary transfers are advantageous because the film 6 provided on the carrier film 7 can be utilized completely or at least to a large extent.

[0039] Instead of transferring the slide 6 to itself in the first step as in the previous example, the slide 6 can also be partially transferred to an auxiliary substrate in the first step and then the remaining areas transferred to the substrate 25 in a second step, as shown in the example.
