AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing seating furniture designs with pivoted footrests suffer from large gaps and short support surfaces when the footrest is swung out, compromising user comfort.

Method used

A kinematic module using articulated levers between the seat part and footrest ensures a 'flat' movement curve, allowing the footrest parts to pivot into a nearly continuous support surface with minimal gap, extending the support surface and maintaining comfort.

Benefits of technology

The solution provides a significantly longer support surface for the user's legs with minimal gap between the seat and footrest, enhancing user comfort by ensuring almost continuous leg support.

Description

[0001] The invention relates to a piece of seating furniture with a chassis, a seat part and a pivotable footrest connected to the seat part via a kinematics module, wherein the footrest comprises at least a first and a second foot part fitting which are coupled to one another in such a way that the second foot part fitting can be pivoted from the sitting position of the seating furniture, in which the first and the second foot part fitting are pivoted in below the seat part, into a lying position of the seating furniture, in which the second foot part fitting with the first foot part fitting forms an extension of the seat part adjoining the seat part, wherein the second foot part fitting is pivoted into an approximately horizontal position which extends the end of the pivoted out first foot part fitting facing away from the seat part.

[0002] From the publication DE 200 05 106 U1 a piece of seating furniture is known in which a two-part footrest is pivoted in below the seat part and both parts of the footrest run approximately parallel to the seat part.

[0003] The disadvantage, however, is that when the footrest is swung out, there is a large gap between the seat and the footrest, which reduces the user's comfort due to the inconsistent leg support.

[0004] Another disadvantage is that the parts of the footrest are each relatively short.

[0005] Based on the described prior art, the invention is based on the object of developing a piece of seating furniture of the generic type in such a way that the footrest in the swung-out position has both an almost continuous leg support due to only a small gap between the seat part and the footrest and a significantly longer support surface compared to the known seating furniture.

[0006] The above object is achieved according to the invention by a piece of seating furniture having the features listed in patent claim 1.

[0007] The kinematic module arranged between the seat part and the footrest, in the form of articulated levers that are operatively connected to one another, enables a "flat" movement curve of the front edge of the footrest, which runs upwards relative to a horizontal plane spanned by the front edge of the pivoted-in footrest during the entire pivoting of the footrest from the sitting to the lying position.

[0008] As a result of this and due to a movement sequence known per se, in which the two parts of the footrest in the swung-in and swung-out positions together span approximately one plane and are arranged approximately at right angles to each other in an intermediate position, it is possible to design the two parts of the footrest to be significantly longer than in the known seating furniture and thus to provide a longer support surface for the user's lower legs.

[0009] At the same time, the kinematic module of the seating furniture according to the invention is controlled in such a way that, in the swivelled-out position of the footrest, an almost continuous leg support is possible due to only a small gap between the seat part and the footrest.

[0010] An embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows Fig. 1 shows a piece of seating furniture according to the invention in the form of a two-seater sofa, one with the footrest swung out and the other with the footrest swung in; Fig. 2 shows the seating furniture according to the invention from a side perspective with the footrest partially swung in; Fig. 3 shows the seating furniture according to the invention in a detailed partial view with the footrest swung out; and Fig. 4 shows the seating furniture according to the invention in a detailed partial view with the footrest swung in.

[0011] The representations in the drawing essentially show only the mechanism of a piece of seating furniture 1 according to the invention without the parts not of interest here, such as upholstery in particular.

[0012] Some of the components mentioned below are present twice due to a largely mirror-image structure of the mechanism of the seating furniture 1, whereby these components are referred to in the following in the singular, whereby both components are meant in each case.

[0013] The seating furniture 1 according to the invention consists of a chassis 5, a seat part 3 and a pivoting footrest connected to the seat part 3 via a kinematic module 2 in the form of articulated levers that are operatively connected to one another.

[0014] The footrest 6 is designed in two parts and comprises a first 6a and a second foot part fitting 6b, which are connected to each other in an articulated manner.

[0015] The first foot part fitting 6a and the second foot part fitting 6b are coupled to one another in such a way that the second foot part fitting 6b can be pivoted from the sitting position of the seating furniture 1, in which the first foot part fitting 6a and the second foot part fitting 6b are pivoted in below the seat part 3, into a lying position of the seating furniture 1, in which the second foot part fitting 6b with the first foot part fitting 6a forms an extension of the seat part 3 adjoining the seat part 3, wherein the second foot part fitting 6b is pivoted into an approximately horizontal position extending the end of the pivoted-out first foot part fitting 6a facing away from the seat part 3.

[0016] The kinematic module 2 of the seating furniture 1 according to the invention comprises a first 7 and a second 8, each hinged to the seat part 3, wherein the first articulated lever 7 is positioned closer to the rear edge of the seating furniture 1 than the second articulated lever 8.

[0017] The first articulated lever 7 is articulated with its end facing away from the seat part 3 to a first end of a third articulated lever 9.

[0018] The third articulated lever 9 is articulated with its second end to the first foot part fitting 6a.

[0019] The second articulated lever 8 is articulated with its end facing away from the seat part 3 to a central region of the third articulated lever 9.

[0020] In this context, "a middle area of the articulated lever" does not mean the exact geometric center, but rather the entire area of an articulated lever lying between the two end joint points.

[0021] A fourth articulated lever 10 is articulated on the one hand to a central region of the second articulated lever 8 and on the other hand to the first foot part fitting 6a.

[0022] Due to the described arrangement of the four articulated levers 7, 8, 9, 10 of the kinematic module 2, it is ensured that the front edge 4 of the footrest 6 follows a "flat" movement curve, which runs upwards relative to a horizontal plane spanned by the front edge 4 of the pivoted-in footrest 6 during the entire pivoting phase of the footrest 6 from the sitting to the lying position.

[0023] A control lever 11 is articulated to a central region of the fourth articulated lever 10 and is articulated with its free end to a first end of a coupling lever 12, wherein the coupling lever 12 is articulated with its central region to the first foot part fitting 6a.

[0024] The coupling lever 12 is articulated with its second end to a first end of a connecting lever 13, which is articulated with its second end to the second foot part fitting 6b.

[0025] According to the invention, the articulation point of the control lever 11 on the fourth articulated lever 10 is arranged such that the distance between this articulation point and the articulation point of the coupling lever 12 on the first foot part fitting 6a is shortened during a first phase of the pivoting of the seating furniture 1 from the sitting to the lying position and is lengthened in a second phase of the pivoting of the seating furniture 1 from the sitting to the lying position.

[0026] This has the effect that the first 6a and the second foot part fitting 6b, in the pivoted-in and pivoted-out position of the footrest 6, together span approximately one plane and are arranged approximately at right angles to one another in an intermediate position.

[0027] This movement sequence of the first 6a and the second foot part fitting 6b in conjunction with the aforementioned "flat" movement curve of the front edge 4 of the footrest 6 makes it possible to provide significantly longer support surfaces for the user's lower legs than in the known seating furniture.

[0028] At the same time, the four articulated levers 7, 8, 9, 10 of the kinematic module 2 are controlled in such a way that, when the footrest 6 is in the swung-out position, only a small gap is formed between the seat part 3 and the footrest 6, thus enabling an almost continuous leg support.
