AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

The existing security films used in identity documents, particularly those with optically variable elements like DOVIDs, face challenges in adhesion to polycarbonate layers, leading to potential delamination and misuse for creating false documents, as the optically variable elements do not fuse with polycarbonate layers during lamination, making them susceptible to extraction and reuse.

Method used

An optical security device comprising multiple layers, including a set of security layers, a protective varnish, and two transparent glue layers with different bonding forces and patterns, where one glue layer is discontinuous and luminescent, ensuring selective and controlled destruction upon attempted delamination, thereby preventing fraudulent reuse.

Benefits of technology

The solution enhances the security of identity documents by ensuring that any attempt to delaminate the optically variable element results in its controlled destruction, preventing its reuse in creating false documents, thus enhancing document authenticity.

Description

[0001] Optical safety device.

[0002] The present invention relates to the field of security films.

[0003] Security films are typically used on government identity documents.

[0004] Increasingly, identity documents include at least one layer of polycarbonate, for example, smart card-sized identity cards, known as "ID1", personal data pages in passports, driving licenses, etc.

[0005] On identity documents, a polycarbonate layer is personalized by laser marking.

[0006] Although personalization by carbonization within one of the layers of an identity document is recognized as difficult to falsify, recent years have seen the accessibility of personalization lasers increase, leading to a need for protection of variable information that is still relevant today.

[0007] Many authentication elements have recently been developed to secure plastic-based identity documents, including holographic films such as DOVID (acronym for "Diffractive Optically Variable Image Device").

[0008] These DOVIDs are incorporated by a heat transfer process onto a polycarbonate sheet, which is assembled with other polycarbonate sheets containing other functions of the identity document. All these sheets are then hot-laminated under pressure to obtain the final identity document.

[0009] In this case, the optically variable element (DOVID) used to secure the identity document is not made of polycarbonate. Therefore, when the polycarbonate layers sandwiching the optically variable element are melted, the element does not fuse with the polycarbonate layers. There is therefore a risk of extraction of the DOVID at this point on the identity document. It is therefore necessary for the document to be made in such a way that any attempt at extraction leads to at least partial destruction of the DOVID.

[0010] To incorporate them into an identity document, DOVIDs comprise an adhesive layer whose resins are chosen to obtain optimal adhesion. However, for various reasons, there is always a fragility in the adhesion of the DOVID, which can subsequently result in delamination of the layers between them for fraudulent purposes, for the manufacture of a false identity document. An object of the invention is to provide a security optical component that can be transferred by heat onto a polycarbonate sheet and hot-laminated under pressure, which aims to limit or even avoid its reuse by delamination in the manufacture of a false identity document.

[0011] To this end, according to a first of its objects, the present invention relates to an optical security device (1000) transferable onto a polycarbonate substrate (200) of a document to be secured, the device comprising:

[0012] - a set of security layers (140) conferring a recognizable optical effect to the security optical component (100);

[0013] - a layer of protective varnish (130), arranged on a first face of the set of security layers (140), in contact with the detachment layer (120);

[0014] - a first transparent adhesive layer (150), arranged on a second face of the set of security layers (140), opposite the first, intended to fix the set of security layers (140) during the transfer of the optical security component (100) onto the polycarbonate substrate (200); and

[0015] - a support film (110) intended to be eliminated after transfer;

[0016] - a detachment layer (120), in contact with the support film (110) and allowing the support film (110) to be removed after transfer;

[0017] It is essentially characterized in that the optical security component (100) further comprises:

[0018] - a second transparent glue layer (160), in contact with the first transparent glue layer (150), and intended to fix the set of security layers (140) during the transfer of the optical security component (100) onto the polycarbonate substrate (200),

[0019] - at least one of the first layer of glue (150) and the second layer of glue (160) being discontinuous along at least one direction of elongation and representing a set of at least one predetermined pattern.

[0020] It is possible to provide that the first adhesive layer (150) has a first bonding strength on the polycarbonate substrate (200), and the second adhesive layer (160) has a second bonding strength on the polycarbonate substrate (200), different from the first bonding strength. It is possible to provide that the first adhesive layer (150) is in the form of at least one of:

[0021] - a continuous uniform layer along at least one direction of elongation,

[0022] - a uniform discontinuous layer along at least one direction of elongation,

[0023] - a set of at least one first predetermined pattern.

[0024] It can be provided that the second layer of glue (160) is in the form of at least one of:

[0025] - a continuous uniform layer along at least one direction of elongation,

[0026] - a uniform discontinuous layer along at least one direction of elongation,

[0027] - a set of at least one second predetermined pattern.

[0028] It can be provided that the second layer of glue (160) is printed on the first layer of glue (150), so that the first layer of glue (150) and the second layer of glue (160) are at least locally superimposed.

[0029] It can be provided that the second layer of glue (160) is coplanar with the first layer of glue (150), the first layer of glue (150) comprising at least one recess whose shape is complementary to that of the pattern of the second layer of glue (160), the pattern of the second layer of glue (160) being printed in said recess, so that the first layer of glue (150) and the second layer of glue (160) are at least locally adjacent.

[0030] We can predict that:

[0031] - either only the first layer of glue (150) comprises luminescent pigments which emit in a first spectral band when they are excited in a first spectral band; or

[0032] - either only the second layer of glue (160) comprises luminescent pigments which emit in a second spectral band when they are excited in a second spectral band; or - either the first layer of glue (150) and the second layer of glue (160) comprise different luminescent pigments which emit according to a respective color in the same spectral band when they are excited in the same spectral band; or

[0033] - either the first layer of glue (150) comprises luminescent pigments which emit in a first spectral band when they are excited by a first spectral band, and the second layer of glue (160) comprises luminescent pigments which emit in a second spectral band when they are excited by a second spectral band, different from the first spectral band.

[0034] It can be expected that at least one of the first pattern and the second pattern is invisible to the naked eye under natural light, but becomes visible to the naked eye when the luminescent pigments are emitted.

[0035] We can predict that:

[0036] The area ratio between the first pattern and the second pattern is between two predetermined values.

[0037] According to another of its objects, the invention relates to a secure document comprising:

[0038] - a substrate;

[0039] - at least one optical component resulting from the transfer, onto one face of the polycarbonate substrate, of an optical security device (100) according to the invention.

[0040] Other characteristics and advantages of the present invention will appear more clearly on reading the following description given by way of illustrative and non-limiting example and made with reference to the appended figures.

[0041] The figures are not to scale. Some details have been omitted and others enlarged, for ease of understanding.

[0056] An optical security device 1000 according to the prior art is illustrated in FIG. 1 and FIG. 2. The optical component 100 is intended to be transferred onto a substrate of a document to be secured.

[0057] Typically the document to be secured is an official, state-issued identity document, for example a national identity card, passport, driving license, etc.

[0058] The document to be secured comprises a polycarbonate page 200 or is made up of a polycarbonate page 200. In a known manner, the polycarbonate page 200 comprises a plurality of polycarbonate sheets 200 laminated together. For a document to be secured such as a passport, the polycarbonate page 200 is the data page, called "datapage" by Anglicism, which comprises a certain number of variable data, relating to the bearer of the passport.

[0059] This data is individual and allows the passport holder to be identified. It is therefore necessary to secure at least this data page, to prevent counterfeiters from reusing it to create false documents.

[0060] For this purpose, the optical security component 100 is associated with a support film 110. In the manufacturing process of the secure document, the support film 110 is made of plastic polymer (PET, PP, PS, etc.). It facilitates the transfer of the optical security component 100 but is intended to be eliminated after transfer.

[0061] For this, the support film 110 is in contact with a detachment layer 120, which allows the support film 110 to be removed after transfer.

[0062] The security of the optical security component 100 is ensured in particular by a set of security layers 140, which give it a recognizable optical effect. For example, the set of security layers 140 form a component of the OVD type for “Optical Variable Device” and particularly the components of the DOVID type for “Diffractive Optical Variable Image Device”, adapted to generate diffractive effects, in reflection or in transmission, commonly called “holograms”.

[0063] The set of security layers 140 comprises a first face and a second face, opposite the first face, and comprises in particular:

[0064] - a bonding layer 141, also called bonding primer, or adhesion primer,

[0065] - a layer of stamping varnish 142, and

[0066] - one or more reflective layers, for example a layer of metal 143.

[0067] By “metal layer” 143 is meant a reflective layer which may be opaque metallic (in particular based on at least one of the metals or alloys among: Aluminum, Copper, Chrome) or transparent (in particular based on ZnS or TiO2).

[0068] In a known manner, the optical security component 100 also comprises a protective varnish layer 130, which is arranged on the first face of the set of security layers 140, and which is in contact with the detachment layer 120. To secure the optical security component 100 and the polycarbonate support 200 of the document to be secured, it is known that the optical security component 100 also comprises a first layer of adhesive 150, continuous at least over the entire surface of the optical security component 100, transparent, arranged on the second face of the set of security layers 140, at least over the entire surface of the optical security component 100.

[0069] A transfer step makes it possible to bond the optical security component 100, provided with the support film 110 and the detachment layer 120, using the first continuous layer of adhesive 150 which comes into contact with a layer of polycarbonate and which is activated in a hot stamping step which ends with the peeling of the support film 110 using the detachment layer 120. During the transfer, the first layer of adhesive 150 secures the optical security component 100 to the polycarbonate support 200.

[0070] After transfer, a lamination step is provided in which: at least a second layer of polycarbonate 210 is positioned on the assembly constituted by the layer 200 and the transferred optical component 100,

[0071] A temperature pressing operation is then carried out, which allows the two layers of polycarbonate 200, 210 to be fused together.

[0072] The optical security component 100 can thus be sandwiched between the polycarbonate support 200 and the second polycarbonate layer 210 which is in contact with the protective varnish layer 130.

[0073] An optical security component 100 according to the invention is intended to be transferred onto a polycarbonate support 200. As explained previously, it is desirable to limit the risks of fraudulent delamination of the layers from one another.

[0074] For this purpose, it is possible to modify the chemical composition of the glue used for the first layer of glue 150, which is intended to fix the set of security layers 140 during the transfer of the optical security component 100 onto the polycarbonate substrate 200.

[0075] However, the present invention proposes a different approach which makes it possible to detect any delamination of the layers between them, in this case by selective and controlled destruction of the hologram in the event of delamination of the latter from its polycarbonate support 200.

[0076] With this objective in mind, a second transparent adhesive layer 160 is provided, in contact with the first adhesive layer 150, and intended to fix the set of security layers 140 during the transfer of the optical security component 100 onto the substrate, as illustrated in FIG. 3 and FIG. 4. In FIG. 3, the first adhesive layer 150 is in contact with the metallization layer 143 before transfer and the second adhesive layer 160 is printed on the first adhesive layer 150.

[0077] It can also be provided, as illustrated in FIG. 12 and FIG. 13, that the second layer of glue 160 is printed on the metallization layer 143 before transfer, and that the first layer of glue 150 is coated on the second layer of glue 160, that is to say that the printed surface of the first layer of glue 150 is greater than that of the second layer of glue 160.

[0078] The chemical composition of the second layer of glue 160 may be the same as that of the first layer of glue 150, provided that the luminescent pigments mentioned later are different. In this case, there is no selective and controlled destruction but an optical control by luminescence color.

[0079] Preferably, however, the chemical composition of the second layer of glue 160 is different from that of the first layer of glue 150, as explained below.

[0080] Preferably, the first adhesive layer 150 has a first bonding strength to the polycarbonate substrate 200, and the second adhesive layer 160 has a second bonding strength to the polycarbonate substrate 200, different from the first bonding strength.

[0081] The bonding strength is described for example at https: / / www.3mfrance.fr / 3M / fr_FR / solutions-adhesives-assemblage / formation-apprentissage / les-forces-de-collage /

[0082] In this case, the first bonding force on the polycarbonate substrate 200 is greater than the second bonding force on the polycarbonate substrate 200.

[0083] It can be provided that when the second layer of glue 160 is deposited on the first layer of glue 150, therefore superimposed thereon, the bonding force of the first layer of glue 150 on the second layer of glue 160 is greater than a predetermined threshold value; and for example greater than at least one of: the first bonding force of the first layer of glue 150 on the polycarbonate substrate 200, and the second bonding force of the second layer of glue 160 on the polycarbonate substrate 200. In this case, in the event of an attempt to tear off the optical security component 100, then the two superimposed layers of glue 150, 160 are torn off at the same time as the latter.In the case where the bonding strength of the first layer of glue 150 on the second layer of glue 160 is greater than the bonding strength of the second layer of glue 160 on the polycarbonate substrate 200, there is controlled destruction because the areas where the first layer of glue 150 and the second layer of glue 160 are superimposed will be torn off because the adhesion between these two glues is greater than the adhesion of the second layer of glue 160 on the polycarbonate 200.

[0084] It may also be provided that the bonding strength of the first layer of glue 150 on the second layer of glue 160 is less than a predetermined threshold value; and in this case less than at least one of: the first bonding strength of the first layer of glue 150 on the polycarbonate substrate 200, and the second bonding strength of the second layer of glue 160 on the polycarbonate substrate 200. In this case, in the event of an attempt to tear off the optical security component 100, then the first layer of glue 150 is torn off at the same time as it, and the second layer of glue 160 remains bonded to the polycarbonate substrate 200. In this case, there is no controlled destruction because the break will take place between the first layer of glue 150 and the second layer of glue 160 and not between a layer of glue and the polycarbonate substrate 200.

[0085] The principle of selective and controlled destruction is illustrated in Figure 14. An attempt to tear off the optical component generates tearing forces that oppose the bonding forces and the adhesion forces of the layers of the optical component. This results in zones of weakness A, where the bonding forces and the adhesion forces are weakest.

[0086] These areas of fragility A are represented by dotted lines in Figure 14. In Figure 14, the second layer of glue 160 is represented in the form of dots.

[0087] The zones of weakness A, in this case A1, A2 and A3, depend on the position of the glue dots of the second layer of glue 160 and the adhesion forces.

[0088] At a glue dot of the second glue layer 160, the fragility can be located: either on the fragility zone A1, at the interface between the second glue layer 160 and the first glue layer 150; or on the fragility zone A2, at the interface between the second glue layer 160 and the polycarbonate substrate 200. Between two neighboring glue dots of the second glue layer 160, generally in line with them, the fragility is located on the zone A3, at the interface between the hologram 14 and the second polycarbonate layer 210. By hologram 14, we mean all of the following layers, integral with each other: the protective varnish layer 130, all of the security layers 140 which includes the bonding layer 141, the stamping varnish layer 142 and the metallization layer 143.

[0089] For this purpose, at least one of the following inequalities is preferably provided:

[0090] - the bonding force between the second layer of glue 160 and the polycarbonate support 200 is less than the adhesion force between the hologram 14 and the second layer of polycarbonate 210, itself less than the bonding force between the first layer of glue 150 and the polycarbonate support 200, itself less than the bonding force between the hologram 14 and the first layer of glue 150;

[0091] - the adhesive force between the hologram 14 and the second polycarbonate layer 210 is greater than the bonding force between the first glue layer 150 and the second glue layer 160;

[0092] - the adhesive force between the hologram 14 and the second polycarbonate layer 210 is greater than the bonding force between the second glue layer 160 and the polycarbonate support 200.

[0093] It can be expected that there is not necessarily a comparative relationship between: on the one hand the bonding force between the second layer of glue 160 and the polycarbonate support 200; and on the other hand the bonding force between the first layer of glue 150 and the second layer of glue 160.

[0094] It can be provided that the bonding force between the first layer of glue 150 and the polycarbonate support 200 is greater than or equal to the bonding force between the first layer of glue 150 and the hologram 14. Preferably, these two bonding forces are greater than the adhesion force between the hologram 14 and the second layer of polycarbonate 210.

[0095] For example, the glue of the first glue layer 150 can be considered a “strong” glue and is a polyester-based glue and / or acrylic copolymer and / or styrene-acrylic copolymer and / or an epoxy resin and / or a polyurethane and / or ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer. A crosslinking agent can also be added. The families of crosslinking agents are as follows, taken alone or in combination, a carbodiimide, a melamine resin, an aziridine, an isocyanate.

[0096] The glue of the second glue layer 160 can be considered a “weak” glue. It is, for example, a glue based on an acrylic copolymer and / or a styrene-acrylic copolymer and / or a polyester and / or an epoxy resin and / or a polyurethane and / or ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA).

[0097] The first layer of glue 150 may be in the form of a uniform layer, continuous along at least one direction of elongation, and typically covers the entire surface of the hologram.

[0098] Alternatively, it can be provided that the first layer of glue 150 is in the form of a discontinuous layer, comprising a set of at least one first predetermined pattern.

[0099] Similarly, the second layer of glue 160 may be in the form of a continuous uniform layer along at least one direction of elongation, or, preferably, in discontinuous form, and in this case in the form of a set of at least one second predetermined pattern. Preferably, the second pattern is smaller than the first pattern, and included in the first pattern when it is observed perpendicular to the plane of the optical security component 100.

[0100] For example, as shown in Figure 5, the second pattern follows the shape of the first pattern.

[0101] Preferably, the first layer of glue 150 and the second layer of glue 160 are not both uniform and continuous along two directions of elongation.

[0102] In this case, at least one of the first layer of glue 150 and the second layer of glue 160 is discontinuous along at least one direction of elongation and represents a set of at least one predetermined pattern, so as to allow selective destruction.

[0103] It may be provided that each first pattern comprises a plurality of second patterns.

[0104] In Figure 6 and Figure 7, the first pattern represents a possibly distorted oval shape, and the second pattern represents the characters "Fail" in Figure 6 and polygons in Figure 7.

[0105] The shape of the first pattern can be any.

[0106] Typically, it can be provided that the surface ratio between the first pattern and the second pattern is between two predetermined values, so that the first pattern and the second pattern are both observable, advantageously with the naked eye. Since the second layer of adhesive 160 has a bonding strength lower than the bonding strength of the first layer of adhesive 150, it is advantageously provided that the surface ratio between the first pattern and the second pattern is at most ' / z.

[0107] In a first variant, the second layer of glue 160 is printed on the first layer of glue 150.

[0108] In a second variant, the second layer of glue 160 is coplanar with the first layer of glue 150. In this case, the first layer of glue 150 comprises at least one recess whose shape is complementary to that of the pattern of the second layer of glue 160, the pattern of the second layer of glue 160 being printed in said recess, for example as illustrated in FIG. 9. In this case, the second layer of glue 160 is interposed with the first layer of glue 150.

[0109] Luminescent pigments

[0110] It can be provided that at least one of the first layer of glue 150 and the second layer of glue 160 comprises luminescent pigments, that is to say phosphorescent or, in this case, fluorescent.

[0111] Luminescent pigments are pigments that emit in a specific spectral emission band when they are previously excited by photons in a first excitation spectral band, particularly UV. The emission spectral band is generally different from the excitation spectral band.

[0112] It is thus possible to use: either the absorption spectral band, i.e. the excitation spectral band of the luminescent pigments, or the emission spectral band of the luminescent pigments, as described in the variants below.

[0113] In a first variant, only the first layer of glue 150 comprises luminescent pigments.

[0114] In a second variant, only the second layer of glue 160 comprises luminescent pigments.

[0115] In a third variant, the first glue layer 150 and the second glue layer 160 each comprise luminescent pigments. The luminescent pigments of the first glue layer 150 and the luminescent pigments of the second glue layer 160 all emit in the same predetermined spectral emission band, but the luminescent pigments of the first glue layer 150 emit in a first color, and the luminescent pigments of the second glue layer 160 emit in a second color different from the first color. That is to say, the luminescent pigments of the first glue layer 150 emit in a first spectral emission band, and the luminescent pigments of the second glue layer 160 emit in a second spectral emission band, such that the first spectral emission band and the second spectral emission band are at least partially identical.

[0116] For example (not limiting), the first glue layer 150 comprises luminescent pigments that emit blue light when pre-excited by UV light, and the second glue layer 160 comprises luminescent pigments that emit yellow light when pre-excited by the same UV light.

[0117] When the first layer of glue 150 and the second layer of glue 160 are superimposed, as illustrated for example in figure 8 or figure 10, it is thus possible to implement an additive synthesis, the result of which is, in this case, green in color.

[0118] When the first layer of glue 150 and the second layer of glue 160 are juxtaposed, the first pattern appears blue and the second pattern appears yellow.

[0119] In a fourth variant, the first glue layer 150 and the second glue layer 160 also each comprise luminescent pigments, but which are excited in a respective spectral band. For this purpose, the first glue layer 150 comprises luminescent pigments which emit in a first emission spectral band when they are previously excited by photons of a first excitation spectral band, and the second glue layer 160 comprises luminescent pigments which emit in a second emission spectral band, possibly the same as the first emission spectral band, but when they are previously excited by photons of a second excitation spectral band, different from the first excitation spectral band.

[0120] For example, the luminescent pigments of the first layer of glue 150 emit when they have been excited by UV-A photons, and the luminescent pigments of the second layer of glue 160 emit when they have been excited by UV-B or UV-C photons. Whatever the above variant, it is thus possible to check the optical security component 100, possibly on its polycarbonate support 200, by subjecting it to UV light. Advantageously, this type of testing is non-destructive.

[0121] Preferably, at least one of the first pattern and the second pattern is invisible to the naked eye under natural light, thanks to the transparent glues, but becomes visible to the naked eye when the luminescent pigments emit.

[0122] Regardless of the above variation, preferably at least one of the first pattern and the second pattern does not have symmetry, which adds an extra level of security by making any attempt at fraudulent copying even more difficult.

[0123] However, as illustrated in Figure 7, Figure 8 or Figure 11, it may be provided that at least one of the patterns among the first pattern and the second pattern is repeated, the patterns being arranged in a network. It will be noted that the network arrangement also makes it possible to secure the document, for example by controlling the distance between each pattern in the network.
