Description

Title of the invention: Striking tool equipped with a centering system

[0001] The present application relates to a striking tool equipped with a centering system.

[0002] For the purposes of this application, a striking tool means a tool, such as a pin punch or a punch for example, used to extract a fastener, such as a rivet or a screw for example, inserted into a hole in a part with a tight fit.

[0003] According to a first embodiment shown in [Fig. 1], a striking tool comprises a body 10 extended by a straight shaft 12. The body 10 comprises, opposite the shaft 12, a striking face 14. The shaft 12 comprises, opposite the body 10, a free end 16 configured to bear against a fastener 18 to be extracted, positioned in an opening 20 of a part 22.

[0004] During operation, if the axis A12 of the rod 12 is inclined relative to the axis A20 of the orifice 20 at the moment the blow is struck on the striking face 14, there is a risk of damage to the inside of the orifice 20, as illustrated in [Fig. 1]. Furthermore, since only the free end 16 of the rod 12 is in contact with the fastener 18 to be extracted at the moment the blow is struck, there is a risk of damage to the part 22 if the free end 16 of the rod 12 slips on the fastener 18 to be extracted.

[0005] To overcome these drawbacks, document FR-3,055,237 describes a striking tool equipped with a guide tip 24. The guide tip comprises a body 26 extending between first and second end faces 26.1, 26.2 and having a conduit 28 opening at the first and second end faces 26.1, 26.2. This conduit 28 comprises a first section 28.1, opening at the first end face 26.1, configured to guide the body 10 of the striking tool in translation, and a second section 28.2, positioned between the first section 28.1 and the second end face 26.2, configured to house the shank 12 of the striking tool. This second section 28.2 has a larger cross-section than the shank 12. Consequently, the shank 12 is not guided by the guide tip.

[0006] In operation, the body 10 of the striking tool is movable between a first position, visible in part (A) of [Fig. 2], in which the free end 16 of the rod 12 does not protrude from the second end face 26.2, and a second position, visible in part (B) of [Fig. 2], in which the free end 16 of the rod 12 protrudes from the second end face 26.2. The guide tip 24 includes a spring 30 for holding the body 10 of the tool in strike in the first position.

[0007] To center the guide tip, the conduit 28 includes a third section 28.3, opening at the level of the second end face 26.2, which has a section adjusted to that of the fastener 18 to be extracted.

[0008] The first, second and third sections 28.1, 28.2, 28.3 of the conduit 28 are coaxial and have an axis A28 substantially perpendicular to the second end face 26.2.

[0009] In operation, the second end face 26.2 of the body 26 of the guide tip 24 is pressed against the part 22, a part of the fastener 18 to be extracted protruding from the part 22 being inserted into the third section 28.3 of the conduit 28. From then on, the axis of the body 10 is aligned with the axis A20 of the orifice 20 and a blow can be struck on the striking face 14 in order to extract the fastener 18.

[0010] Although a striking tool equipped with a guide tip 24 as described in document FR-3.055.237 and in [Fig.2] theoretically limits the risk of damage to the part 22, it is not entirely satisfactory because if the rod 12 is not perfectly aligned with the body 10, its free end 16 may slip on the fastener 18. Furthermore, since the guide tip 24 covers the body 10, the assembly formed by the striking tool and the guide tip 24 has a larger cross-section, making it less ergonomic.

[0011] The present invention aims to remedy all or part of the drawbacks of the prior art.

[0012] To this end, the invention relates to a striking tool configured for extracting an element positioned in an opening in a workpiece having a bearing face from which the element is to be extracted. The striking tool comprises a body and a straight shank, oriented along a longitudinal direction, which includes a free end configured to cooperate with an element to be extracted. The striking tool is equipped with a centering system comprising a sliding body, a housing configured to accommodate the element to be extracted in a tight fit, and at least one contact face configured to be pressed against the bearing face of the workpiece.

[0013] According to the invention, the sliding body of the centering system includes a through hole, with a cross-section identical to that of the rod, allowing it to slide without play along the rod of the striking tool, the housing being centered with respect to the through hole, the through hole having an axis substantially perpendicular to the contact face of the centering system.

[0014] This solution allows for better guidance and centering of the rod relative to the element to be extracted, while maintaining the ergonomics of the striking tool unchanged.

[0015] According to another feature, the sliding body includes the housing.

[0016] According to another feature, the sliding body includes the contact face at which the housing opens.

[0017] According to another feature, the centering system includes a peripheral collar, connected to the sliding body, which has a contact face coplanar with the contact face of the body, the sliding body and the peripheral collar forming a single piece.

[0018] According to another feature, the centering system includes an end piece having the housing, the end piece being attached in a removable manner to the sliding body so that the housing is substantially centered with respect to the through hole.

[0019] According to another feature, the nozzle includes the contact face at which the housing opens.

[0020] According to another feature, the centering system includes a centering ring, having a lateral face with a cross-section identical to that of the orifice to slide without play in the latter, and a link, connecting the centering ring and the rod, configured to immobilize the centering ring relative to the rod near its free end, the lateral face being centered relative to the rod.

[0021] According to another feature, the link connecting the centering ring and the rod is a removable link.

[0022] According to another feature, the shank of the striking tool translates relative to the centering system, along the longitudinal direction, in a first direction in which the free end of the shank protrudes from and away from the contact face of the centering system, and in a second direction, opposite to the first. In addition, the centering system includes a backstop mechanism configured to be in an activated state in which the backstop mechanism prevents translation of the striking tool in the second direction, and in a deactivated state in which the backstop mechanism allows the striking tool to translate in both the first and second directions.

[0023] According to another feature, the anti-return mechanism includes a notched rack integral with the body of the striking tool and a ratchet integral with the centering system movable between a protruding position, corresponding to the activated state, in which the ratchet cooperates with the notched rack and blocks it in translation in the second direction and a retracted position, corresponding to the deactivated state, in which the ratchet does not cooperate with the notched rack and allows the body of the striking tool to translate in the first and second directions.

[0024] According to another feature, the anti-return mechanism includes a spring configured to push the body of the striking tool in the second direction.

[0025] According to another feature, the anti-return mechanism comprises a sleeve attached to the sliding body and defining with the latter a housing configured to accommodate the body of the striking tool, the ratchet being attached to the sleeve.

[0026] Other features and advantages will become apparent from the following description of the invention, given by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, among which:

[0036] [Fig. 10] is a longitudinal section of a striking tool illustrating another embodiment of the invention,

[0037] [Fig.11] is a rear view of the striking tool visible in [Fig.10].

[0038] According to an embodiment visible in [Fig. 3], a striking tool 32 is configured to extract an element 34, such as a fastener, a rivet, a screw for example, positioned in an orifice 36 passing through at least one part 38. The part 38 has at least one bearing face F38 from which the element 34 is to be extracted. The bearing face F38 is flat around the orifice 36 and substantially perpendicular to the axis of the orifice 36.

[0039] According to one embodiment, the element 34 to be extracted comprises an axis A34, a cylindrical body 34.1 coaxial with the axis A34, and an end face 34.2 substantially perpendicular to the axis A34. Prior to its removal, the cylindrical body 34.1 is at least partially housed in the opening 36 of the part 38. The axis A34 of the element 34 is coincident with the axis of the orifice 36. The end face 34.2 is generally projecting relative to the bearing face F38 of the part 38.

[0040] According to a simplified embodiment, the striking tool 32 comprises a body 40 and a straight shaft 42 connected to and extending from the body. Opposite the shaft 42, the body 40 has a striking face 44. The shaft 42 extends along a longitudinal direction DL between an end 42.1 connected to the body 40 and a free end 42.2 configured to bear against the element 34 to be extracted, and more particularly against its end face 34.2. In one configuration, the shaft 42 has a constant cross-section (perpendicular to the longitudinal direction) between its ends 42.1 and 42.2. This cross-section is smaller than the cross-section of the orifice 36 and that of the body 40. Thus, the body 40 includes a shoulder 40.1 at the first end 42.1 of the shaft 42.

[0041] According to a first embodiment, the free end 42.2 comprises a flat face perpendicular to the longitudinal direction DL. In this case, the striking tool is called a pin punch.

[0042] According to a second variant, the free end 42.2 is pointed. In this case, the striking tool is called a punch.

[0043] According to another embodiment, an automatic striking tool 32 comprises: a. a hollow body with an orifice at a first end, b. a rod movable in a longitudinal direction relative to the hollow body, the rod passing through the orifice of the hollow body, c. a percussion system positioned inside the hollow body and configured to strike the rod.

[0044] Regardless of the embodiment, the striking tool 32 comprises a body 40 and a straight shaft 42 which includes a free end 42.2 configured to cooperate with an element 34 to be extracted. The shaft 42 is oriented along a longitudinal direction DL.

[0045] The striking tool 32 is equipped with a centering system 46 configured to align the longitudinal direction DL of the striking tool 32 with the axis of the orifice 36 or the axis A34 of the element 34 to be extracted.

[0046] According to an embodiment visible in Figures 2 and 3, the centering system 46 comprises a sliding body 48 which has a central part 48.1, at least one first contact face 48.2 offset in the longitudinal direction relative to the central part 48.1, and a first housing 48.3 opening at the level of the first contact face 48.2. In one configuration, the first contact face 48.2 extends over the entire periphery of the first housing 48.3. In operation, the first contact face 48.2 is configured to be pressed against the bearing face F38 of the part 38.

[0047] The first housing 48.3 has an internal cross-section identical to that of the element 34 to be extracted in order to center the sliding body 48 relative to the element 34 to be extracted. When the element 34 to be extracted has a cylindrical body 34.1 of a given diameter, the first housing 48.3 is cylindrical and has an internal diameter substantially identical to the given diameter of the element 34 to be extracted.

[0048] According to one configuration, the sliding body 48 has a shape of revolution and an axis of revolution A48. According to this configuration, the first contact face 48.2 is positioned in a plane substantially perpendicular to the axis of revolution A48 of the sliding body 48.

[0049] In one arrangement, to improve its stability, the centering system 46 includes a peripheral flange 50, connected to the sliding body 48, which has a second contact face 50.1 coplanar with the first contact face 48.2 of the sliding body 48. Like the first contact face 48.2 of the sliding body 48, this second contact face 50.1 is configured to be pressed against the bearing face F38 of the part 38. In one embodiment, the sliding body 48 and the peripheral flange 50 are made as a single unit and form a single part. This arrangement increases the surface area of the centering system 46 in contact with the bearing face F38 of the part 38.

[0050] The centering system 46 includes a through hole 52, positioned in the central part 48.1 of the sliding body 48, which passes through the latter and opens into the first housing 48.3. According to a particular feature, this through hole 52 has a cross-section identical to that of the rod 42 so as to allow the sliding body 48 to slide without play along the rod 42. Thus, the centering system 46 is perfectly oriented and centered with respect to the rod 42 regardless of the geometry between the rod 42 and the body 40 of the striking tool 32.

[0051] This through hole 52 has an axis A52 substantially perpendicular to the first contact face 48.2 of the sliding body 48. Thus, in operation, when the contact face 48.2 of the sliding body 48 is pressed against the support face F38 of the part 38, the axis A52 of the through hole 52 and the longitudinal direction DL of the rod 42 of the striking tool are substantially perpendicular to the support face F38 of the part 38 and substantially parallel to the axes of the orifice 36 and of the element 34 to be extracted.

[0052] The axis A52 of the through hole 52 is substantially centered with respect to the first housing 48.3. Thus, in operation, the axis A52 of the through hole 52 and the longitudinal direction DL of the rod 42 of the striking tool are substantially aligned with the axes of the orifice 36 and of the element 34 to be extracted.

[0053] Unlike the prior art, the centering system 46 slides relative to the rod 42, which allows for better guidance and centering of the rod 42 relative to the element 34 to be extracted. According to another advantage, the centering system 46 does not cover the body 40 of the striking tool 32. Consequently, the latter can be gripped. via its body 40 and retains its ergonomics. Finally, the centering system 46 can be quickly detached from the striking tool 32, by removing the rod 42 from the through hole 52, in order to adapt the centering system 46 to the section of the element 34 to be extracted.

[0054] According to an embodiment shown in [Fig. 8], the rod 42 has a removable stop 54 near its free end 42.2 to retain the centering system 46 fitted onto the rod 42. In one arrangement, the stop 54 is a retaining ring. In addition, the rod 42 includes, near its free end 42.2, a peripheral groove 55 configured to house the retaining ring. Of course, the invention is not limited to this embodiment for the removable stop 54. When the latter is positioned on the rod 42, the centering system 46 can slide along the rod 42, between the shoulder 40.1 of the body 40 and the removable stop 54.

[0055] According to an embodiment visible in [Fig. 5], the centering system 46 comprises an interchangeable tip 56 which has a third contact face 56.1 configured to be pressed against the support face F38 of the part 38 and a second housing 56.2 opening at the level of the third contact face 56.1 of the tip 56 as well as a link 58 connecting the tip 56 to the sliding body 48. As for the first housing 48.3, the second housing 56.2 has an internal cross-section identical to that of the element 34 to be extracted in order to center the tip 56 with respect to the element 34 to be extracted.

[0056] According to one configuration, the connection 58 is a push-fit connection. For this purpose, the end piece 56 comprises a bearing surface 60, centered with respect to the second housing 56.2, having a cross-section identical to that of the first housing 48.3 of the sliding body 48 so as to fit into said first housing 48.3.

[0057] According to an embodiment shown in Figures 5 to 7, each end piece 56 comprises: a. of the first and second end faces 62.1, 62.2 substantially parallel to each other, the second end face 62.2 forming the third contact face 56.1, b. a cylindrical lateral face 64 extending between the first and second end faces 62.1, 62.2 and comprising a first section 64.1 extending from the first end face 62.1 and forming the span 60, a second section 64.2 extending from the second end face 62.2 and a shoulder 64.3 connecting the first and second sections 64.1, 64.2, c. a through orifice 66 opening at the level of the first and second end faces 62.1, 62.2 and forming the second housing 56.2.

[0058] In operation, the first section 64.1 of the nozzle 56 is positioned in the first housing 48.3 of the sliding body 48, the shoulder 64.3 of the end piece 56 being in contact against the first contact face 48.2 of the sliding body 48.

[0059] The through hole 66 is centered with respect to the first section 64.1 forming the bearing surface 60. Thus, in operation, the second housing 56.2 is centered with respect to the axis A52 of the through hole 52 and the longitudinal direction DL of the rod 42 of the striking tool 32.

[0060] The through hole 66 has an axis coaxial with that of the first section 64.1 forming the bearing 60. Thus, in operation, the axis of the through hole 66 of the tip 56 is aligned with the axis A52 of the through hole 52 and the longitudinal direction DL of the rod 42 of the striking tool 32.

[0061] To ensure better stability, the second section 64.2 has a diameter much larger than that of the second housing 56.2, at least twice that of the second housing 56.2, so that the third contact face 56.1 has the largest possible surface area.

[0062] As illustrated in figures 6 and 7, the different tips 56, 56' have the same first and second end faces 62.1, 62.2 as well as the same lateral faces 64. Only the through holes 66 of the different tips 56, 56' are different to adapt to different elements 34 to be extracted.

[0063] When interchangeable tips 56, 56' are used, the sliding body 48 remains unchanged regardless of the element 34 to be extracted. Only the tip 56, 56' is changed to adapt it to the element 34 to be extracted. This solution improves the versatility of the centering system 46.

[0064] Of course, the invention is not limited to the solution described concerning the tip 56. Other solutions are conceivable, in particular for the connection 58 linking the tip 56 to the sliding body 48.

[0065] According to one embodiment, the centering system 46 includes a centering ring 68 and a link 70 connecting the centering ring 68 and the rod 42.

[0066] This centering ring 68 comprises first and second end faces 72.1, 72.2, a lateral face 74 connecting the first and second end faces 72.1, 72.2 and having a cross-section identical to that of the orifice 36 in which the element 34 to be extracted is positioned, and a through hole 76, opening at the level of the first and second end faces 72.1, 72.2, configured to accommodate the rod 42, the lateral face 74 and the through hole 76 being substantially coaxial. The through hole 76 has a cross-section substantially identical to that of the rod 42.

[0067] The link 70 connecting the centering ring 68 and the rod 42 is configured to immobilize the centering ring 68 relative to the rod 42 near its free end 42.2, the lateral face 74 being centered relative to the rod 42. According to a configuration In the figure, the link 70 is removable in order to change the centering ring 68 according to the cross-section of the orifice 36. The centering ring 68 is positioned on the rod 42 so that its second terminal face 72.2 is coplanar with the free end 42.2 of the rod 42 or very slightly offset, on the order of 0 to 5 mm, towards the first end 42.1 of the rod 42 relative to the free end 42.2 of the rod 42.

[0068] According to an arrangement visible in figures 9 and 10, the first terminal face 72.1 being oriented towards the central part 48.1 of the sliding body 48, the centering ring 68 includes a junction area connecting the lateral face 74 and the second terminal face 72.2 rounded or chamfered to facilitate the introduction of the centering ring 68 into the orifice 36 in which the element 34 to be extracted is positioned.

[0069] According to one configuration, the centering ring 68 is made of a material that promotes the sliding of the centering ring 68 in the orifice 36 or includes a coating, at the level of the lateral face 74, that promotes the sliding of the centering ring 68 in the orifice 36. By way of example, the centering ring 68 is made of tetrafluoroethylene.

[0070] In operation, if before being extracted from its orifice 36, the element 34 does not include any part protruding relative to the bearing face F38 of the part 38 but is slightly recessed relative to this bearing face F38, the centering ring 68 allows the centering system 46 and the rod 42 to be centered relative to the orifice 36 and the element 34 to be extracted.

[0071] As illustrated in part (B) of [Fig.2], during the extraction of the element 34, the centering ring 68 allows the centering system 46 and the rod 42 to remain centered with respect to the orifice 36 and the element 34 to be extracted.

[0072] According to one embodiment, the centering system 46 includes a coating 78, at the contact face 48.2, 50.1, 56.1 of the centering system 46 which is pressed against the support face F38 of the part 38 in operation, configured to reinforce the adhesion between the centering system 46 and the part 38. According to one configuration, the coating 78 is made of elastomer, such as rubber for example.

[0073] According to one embodiment, the coating 78 is also configured to limit the risks of damage to the part 38.

[0074] In operation, the striking tool 32 is configured to occupy a first position, visible in Figures 3, 5, 10 and parts (A) of Figures 4 and 9, in which the shaft 42 of the striking tool 32 does not protrude from the contact face 48.2, 50.1, 56.1 of the centering system 46 and is not positioned in the orifice 36 in which the element 34 to be extracted is located; and a second position, visible in parts (B) of Figures 4 and 9, in which the shaft 42 of the striking tool 32 protrudes from the contact face 48.2, 50.1, 56.1 of the centering system 46 and is positioned at least partially in the orifice 36. The shaft 42 of the striking tool 32 translates relative to the part 38 or the centering system 46, along the longitudinal direction DL, in a first direction in which the rod 42 protrudes relative to the contact face 48.2, 50.1, 56.1 of the centering system 46 and moves away from the latter (this first direction corresponding to the passage from the first position to the second position) as well as in a second direction, opposite to the first direction.

[0075] According to an embodiment visible in figures 10 and 11, the centering system 46 includes an anti-return mechanism 80 configured to occupy an activated state in which it prevents a translation of the striking tool 32 in the second direction and a deactivated state in which it allows the striking tool 32 to translate in the first and second directions.

[0076] This anti-return mechanism 80 comprises a sleeve 82, integral with the sliding body 48, having a first end 82.1 connected to the sliding body 48 and a second free end 82.2. The sliding body 48 and the sleeve 82 define a housing 84 configured to accommodate the body 40 of the striking tool 32.

[0077] The anti-return mechanism 80 includes a spring 86, interposed between the sliding body 48 of the centering system 46 and the body 40 of the striking tool 32, configured to push the body 40 of the striking tool 32 in the second direction.

[0078] The anti-return mechanism 80 also includes a notched rack 88 integral with the body 40 of the striking tool 32 and a ratchet 90 integral with the centering system 46, more particularly with the sleeve 82, movable between a protruding position, corresponding to the activated state, in which the ratchet 90 cooperates with the notched rack 88 and locks it in translation in a direction opposite to the extraction direction, and a retracted position, corresponding to the deactivated state, in which the ratchet 90 does not cooperate with the notched rack 88 and allows it to translate in both directions. A spring 92 holds the ratchet 90 in the protruding position.

[0079] Other solutions are conceivable for the anti-return mechanism 80.

[0080] The operation of the striking tool 32 equipped with a centering system is now described with regard to the various figures 2 to 11.

[0081] Initially, the centering system 46 is positioned relative to the element 34 to be extracted or to the orifice 36 in which the element 34 to be extracted is positioned. If the element 34 to be extracted has a protruding part, this part is positioned in the recess 48.3, 56.2 of the centering system 46, and the contact face 48.2, 50.1, 56.1 of the centering system 46 is pressed against the bearing face F38 of the workpiece 38. Consequently, the shaft 42 of the striking tool 32 is perfectly aligned with the element 34 to be extracted. During the extraction of the element 34, the shaft 42 translates along the longitudinal direction DL so as to enter the orifice 36. The re- garment 78 allows the centering system 46 to remain stationary.

[0082] In the presence of a centering ring 68, during the movement of the rod 42, the centering ring 68 slides in the orifice 36 and ensures centering of the rod 42 with respect to the orifice 36.

[0083] Of course, the invention is not limited to this embodiment for the centering system 46. Regardless of the embodiment, the centering system 46 comprises a sliding body 48 which has a through hole 52 allowing it to slide, without play, along the shaft 42 of the striking tool 32, a housing 48.3, 56.2 centered with respect to the through hole 52 and configured to house in a tight fit (without play) the element 34 to be extracted as well as at least one contact face 48.2, 50.1, 56.1 positioned in a plane substantially perpendicular to the axis A52 of the through hole 52 and configured to be pressed against a bearing face F38 of the part 38 having the orifice 36 in which the element 34 to be extracted is positioned.

[0084] This solution provides improved guidance and centering of the rod 42 relative to the element 34 to be extracted, while maintaining the ergonomics of the striking tool unchanged. Furthermore, this solution allows for quick adaptation of the centering system 46 to the element 34 to be extracted and gives the striking tool 32 greater versatility.

[0085] According to an embodiment visible in figures 3 and 4, the sliding body 48 includes the housing 48.3. According to this embodiment, the centering system 46 can be replaced by another centering system comprising a different housing 48.3, adapted to an element 34 to be extracted of a different section.

[0086] According to another embodiment visible in [Fig. 5], when the centering system 46 includes an end piece 56 having the housing 56.2, the end piece 56 is detachably fixed to the sliding body 48 so that the housing 56.2 is substantially centered with respect to the through hole 52. Thus, it is possible to provide a single centering system 46 supporting alternatively different ends pieces 56 with housings 56.2 adapted to different sections of elements 34 to be extracted.

[0087] The contact face 48.2, 50.1, 56.1 can be provided at the sliding body 48 and / or the end piece 56. It can include an adhesive coating 78 to reinforce the adhesion of the centering system 46 with the part 38 so that it remains immobile.

[0088] Finally, the presence of a centering ring 68 ensures centering of the rod 42 throughout the extraction phase of the element 34.
