Description

Title of the invention: ELECTRONIC CIGARETTE Technical field of the invention

[0001] The present invention relates to an electronic cigarette. State of the art

[0002] As is known, an electronic cigarette is an electronic device that allows vapor to be inhaled, generally automated and in many cases containing nicotine in varying percentages, in order to provide the user with a sensation comparable, at least in facial expressions and gestures, to that associated with the use of cigarettes or other traditional smoking products.

[0003] In general, an electronic cigarette is formed by three main components: a battery, a liquid reservoir which is normally a solution comprising glycol, glycerol, flavorings and sometimes nicotine and an atomizer, which is powered by the battery and comprising a resistance (called a coil) and a porous material (typically cotton or a wick or mesh), the function of which is to convey to the resistance, the liquid contained in the reservoir in order to allow the liquid to heat up and transform into a flow of vapor inhalable by the user.

[0004] There are different types of electronic cigarettes on the market today, which differ in shape, dimensions, methods of use and type of service. In general, however, it is possible to classify electronic cigarettes into two main categories: a first category, in which the atomizer and the tank are made as a single body, and a second, more recent category, in which the tank and the atomizer are separate components that can be connected to each other.

[0005] The first category of electronic cigarettes includes, for example, cigarettes called Pod Mods, which comprise a body (Mod), which integrates the battery and an electronic circuit, and a cartridge (Pod) which serves as a reservoir and contains the atomizer inside. The Pod can be of the type that can be refilled with liquid so that it can be reused until the resistance of the atomizer is exhausted, after which it must be replaced, or it can be of the disposable type, in other words the Pod must be completely changed each time the liquid inside it has run out.

[0006] In electronic cigarettes of the second category, to which the present invention refers, the atomizer is on the other hand an autonomous component removably connectable to the body containing the battery and the electronic circuit, and the reservoir is constituted by a disposable cartridge, which is structured to open when snapped onto the atomizer to allow liquid to reach and penetrate the permeable material around the coil.

[0007] Taking into consideration the use of disposable cartridges of the two categories of electronic cigarettes described above, those of the second category are significantly more appropriate from the economic point of view in that the cost of a cartridge including the atomizer is considerably higher than the cost of a cartridge formed only by the tank. In the case of electronic cigarettes of the second category, the atomizer must be changed only when it is worn out, in other words normally every twenty cartridges of liquid vaped. In some cases, the atomizer can be of the regenerable type, otherwise it does not have to be replaced in its entirety, but it is possible to replace only the used resistance with a new one created by hand by the user.

[0008] Normally, disposable cartridges of cigarettes of the second category mentioned above consist of a cup-shaped body defining the reservoir for the liquid and closed by a membrane capable of being torn by a cutting device which is carried by the atomizer or by the body of the electronic cigarette, when the cartridge is snapped onto the atomizer.

[0009] Cartridges of this type are known, for example, from document IT 102020000005233 of the same applicant, or from documents EP 2965641 Al, EP 2949226 Al, EP 3020290 Al.

[0010] Known electronic cigarettes of the type described above have certain disadvantages arising from the fact that the coupling between the cartridge and the atomizer normally comprises relatively complex and expensive mechanical devices. Purpose and summary of the invention

[0011] The aim of the present invention is to provide an electronic cigarette which uses a disposable reservoir cartridge capable of being snapped onto the atomizer and which is free from the drawbacks described above and has a simple and economical implementation.

[0012] According to the present invention, an electronic cigarette is provided comprising a battery body; an atomizer mounted on the battery body and comprising an atomizing head; and a cartridge removably coupled to the atomizer and containing vaporizable liquid; wherein the cartridge comprises an opening for the vaporizable liquid to exit from the cartridge and a valve configured to move between a closed position, in which it seals said opening to prevent the vaporizable liquid from exiting the cartridge when the cartridge is not coupled to the atomizer, and an open position, in which it allows the vaporizable liquid to exit the cartridge through said opening and to join the atomizing head when the cartridge is coupled to the atomizer.

[0013] According to one embodiment, the valve is configured to move from the closed position to the open position by the effect of the coupling of the cartridge to the atomizer.

[0014] According to one embodiment, the valve is configured to move from the closed position to the open position by the effect of the insertion of the atomizing head into the cartridge during the coupling of the cartridge to the atomizer.

[0015] According to one embodiment, the opening is arranged in a first wall of the cartridge and the valve comprises a tubular stem, which extends at least partially inside the cartridge; and, in the closed position of the valve, the tubular stem engages, in a sliding and sealing manner, by means of the interposition of a seal, said opening, and in the open position, acts as a suction channel which allows the vapor produced by the atomizing head to exit the cartridge.

[0016] According to one embodiment, the cartridge comprises a fixed tube, a first section of which extends from a second wall of the cartridge opposite the first wall towards the interior of the cartridge itself and is slidably and sealingly engaged, through the interposition of a seal, by an end portion of the tubular rod; the tube and the tubular rod are dimensioned so that vaporizable liquid does not penetrate into the tubular rod through the open end of said end portion engaged in the tube during movement of the valve from the closed position to the open position, and vice versa.

[0017] According to one embodiment, the tube comprises a second section, which extends from the second wall towards the exterior of the cartridge and in use, defines a steam suction nozzle.

[0018] According to one embodiment, the tubular rod comprises a tubular appendage, which has, on at least a part of its lateral surface, through openings and when the valve is in the closed position, it extends from the first wall towards the outside of the cartridge and when the valve is in the open position, it is inserted completely inside the cartridge so that the vaporizable liquid can flow inside the tubular appendage through the through openings.

[0019] According to one embodiment, the tubular appendage is sized so that, when the cartridge is mounted on the atomizer and the valve is in the open position, the entire atomizing head is housed inside the tubular appendage.

[0020] According to one embodiment, the tubular appendage is dimensioned to sealingly engage said opening when the valve is moved from the closed position to the open position.

[0021] According to one embodiment, the cartridge comprises elastic means for normally maintaining the valve in the closed position.

[0022] There is further provided a cartridge containing vaporizable liquid for an electronic cigarette as defined above. Brief description of the drawings

[0036] The present invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying figures to enable those skilled in the art to make and use it. Various modifications of the described embodiments will immediately become more apparent to those skilled in the art, and the general principles described may be applied to other embodiments and applications without departing from the scope of protection of the present invention as defined in the appended claims. Accordingly, the present invention should not be construed as limited to the embodiments described and illustrated, but should be accorded a broader scope of protection consistent with the principles and features described and claimed herein.

[0037] When not otherwise defined, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning commonly used by persons of ordinary skill in the relevant field of the present invention. In the event of a conflict, this description, including the definitions provided, shall prevail. Furthermore, the examples are provided for illustrative purposes only and as such should not be construed as limiting.

[0038] With reference to figures 1 and 2, with the reference number 1, there is indicated, as a whole, an electronic cigarette comprising a battery body 2, an atomizer 3 mounted on the battery body 2 and a cartridge 4 which can be removably engaged on the atomizer 3 and containing the vaporizable liquid.

[0039] The battery body 2 comprises, in a known manner, a battery (not shown) and an electronic circuit (not shown) housed inside an envelope 5, which also defines a grip for the electronic cigarette 1 and is provided with an on / off button 6 and a number of openings 7 for the entry of the suction air.

[0040] As illustrated in [Fig.2], the atomizer 3 comprises a central hub 8, which has a longitudinal axis 9 and is provided, at one axial end, with a threaded tail 10 suitable for coupling to a threaded portion (not illustrated) of the battery body 2 to removably connect the atomizer 3 to the battery body 2 itself.

[0041] At the axial end opposite the threaded tail 10, the atomizer 3 is provided with an atomizing head 11 which, when the atomizer 3 is mounted on the battery body 2, projects from a flat surface 13 of the atomizer 3 or of the battery body 2 to extend beyond the free end of the battery body 2 ([Fig.3]).

[0042] As illustrated in [Fig.5], the atomizing head 11 comprises a tubular part 12, which is coaxial with respect to the axis 9 and defines a seat for an electrical resistance 14 wound helically around the axis 9 and inserted inside a cylinder of material permeable 15 to the vaporizable liquid, for example cotton.

[0043] The electrical resistance 14 is powered, electrically, by the battery housed in the battery body 2 and delimits, inside the tubular part 12, a suction chimney 16 open in correspondence with the free end of the tubular part 12 and connected, fluidically, to the openings 7 for the entry of the suction air by means of one or more channels (not illustrated) arranged inside the atomizer 3.

[0044] As illustrated in Figures 3 and 4, the cartridge 4 comprises a main body 17, which has a longitudinal axis 9A and is formed by a side wall and by two end walls 18 and 19 defining, with the side wall, a chamber containing the vaporizable liquid.

[0045] The cartridge 4 is configured to be engaged, in use, on the atomizer 3 in order to allow the vaporizable liquid to reach, in the manner which will be described in the following part, the atomization head 11.

[0046] In order for the cartridge 4 to remain stable in position when it is engaged on the atomizer 3, the cartridge 4 is provided with a suitable coupling interface for removably connecting the cartridge 4 to the battery body 2 or directly to the atomizer 3.

[0047] In the illustrated example, the coupling interface is defined by a thread 20 arranged or mounted on one end of the main body 17 in a coaxial position relative to the axis 9A and suitable for coupling with a thread 21 arranged or mounted on a part of the free end of the battery body 2.

[0048] According to different embodiments not illustrated, the coupling interface 20 is different from that of the example illustrated in the attached figures, in particular the threaded coupling to be replaced by a bayonet mechanism or by a flexible hook mechanism or a pressure lock, so that it guarantees a quick, simple, stable and removable connection between the cartridge 4 and the battery body 2 or the atomizer 3.

[0049] The cartridge 4 finally comprises a valve 22 configured to prevent the vaporizable liquid from escaping from the cartridge 4 when the latter is not engaged on the atomizer 3 and to control the vaporizable liquid from escaping from the cartridge 4 when, on the contrary, the latter is engaged on the atomizer 3.

[0050] In particular, the valve 22 is configured to move, by the effect of the insertion of the atomizing head 11 into the cartridge 4 when the latter is coupled to the atomizer 3, from a closed position (figures 3 and 9), which is taken when the cartridge 4 is not coupled to the atomizer 3 and in which the valve 22 prevents the exit of the liquid from the cartridge 4, to an open position which is taken when the cartridge 4 is coupled to the atomizer 3 and in which the valve 22 allows the vaporizable liquid to penetrate inside the head of the atomizer 11.

[0051] With reference to Figures 3 and 4, the valve 22 comprises a tubular rod 23, which extends, at least partially, inside the cartridge 4 and in the closed position of the valve 22 (Figures 3, 5 and 9), engages in a sliding and sealing manner, by means of the interposition of a seal 31, a hole 32 arranged in the end wall 18 in order to prevent the escape of the vaporizable liquid. In the open position, however, the tubular rod 23 serves as a suction channel, which is coaxial with the chimney 16 and allows the vapor produced by the atomizing head to exit the cartridge 4.

[0052] Preferably, as in the examples illustrated in the attached figures, the tubular rod 23 is coaxial with the axis 9A.

[0053] Inside the cartridge 4, an end portion 24 of the tubular rod 23 engages, in a sliding manner, a tube 25 mounted, in a fixed manner, through the end wall 19 of the cartridge 4 and comprising an internal section 26 which is arranged inside the cartridge 4 and an external section 27 which extends outside the cartridge 4 and which, in the embodiments illustrated in figures 1 to 5 and 9 to 10, defines a suction spout (known in the jargon as a drip tip) i.e. that part on which the user places his lips during the suction of the vapor.

[0054] Between the internal section 26 of the tube 25 and the tubular rod 23, preferably near the open end of the internal section 26, a seal 28 is interposed, which is coupled, in a sliding manner, to the external surface of the tubular rod 23 and has the function of preventing the vaporizable liquid from reaching, by penetrating into the tube 25, the open end of the tubular rod 23 arranged inside the tube 25 itself, whatever the axial position of the valve 22.

[0055] The tubular rod 23 comprises a limit switch element which is configured to cooperate with a fixed contrast carried by the cartridge 4 in order to determine the axial position of the tubular rod 23 in the closed position and to prevent the tubular rod 23 from sliding through the hole 32.

[0056] In the examples illustrated, the fixed contrast is constituted by an annular shoulder, arranged on the internal face of the end wall 18 and surrounding the hole 32 and the end-of-travel element of the tubular rod 23 is constituted by an annular flange 24B which, when the valve 22 is in the closed position, is arranged in abutment against the annular shoulder.

[0057] The valve 22 is normally held in the closed position by elastic means.

[0058] Preferably, said elastic means comprise a helical spring 29, which is housed in the tube 25, partially winds around the end portion 24 of the tubular rod 23 and is included between one end of the tube 25 and a flange 30 carried by the tubular rod 23 in order to communicate to the valve 22 a determined closing force, that is to say a force aimed at keeping the annular flange 24B pushed against the annular shoulder of the wall 18.

[0059] According to what is illustrated in Figures 1 to 8, the tubular rod 23 further comprises, from the part opposite the end part 24, a tubular appendage 23A which, when the valve 22 is in the closed position, extends from the hole 32 towards the outside of the cartridge and has, at least on a part of the true lateral surface, a plurality of passing openings 33.

[0060] The tubular appendage 23A is dimensioned so that, when the cartridge 4 is mounted on the atomizer 3 and the valve 22 is in the open position, the entire atomizing head 11 is housed inside the tubular appendage 23A and the latter is inserted completely inside the cartridge 4.

[0061] As illustrated in Figures 3 and 4, the coupling of the cartridge 4 with the atomizer 3 takes place by axially placing the tubular appendage 23A on the head of the atomizer 11 until the end of the tubular appendage 23A comes into abutment against the flat surface 13. From this moment, the subsequent movement of the cartridge 4 towards the atomizer 3 also caused, at least in the last section, by the screwing of the thread 20 with the thread 21, determines the movement of the valve 22 towards the open position ([Fig.4]), in which the through openings 33 put the chamber in fluid communication with the interior of the tubular appendage 23A, thus allowing the vaporizable liquid to reach the head of the atomizer 11 housed inside the tubular appendage 23A.

[0062] To prevent vaporizable liquid from leaking from the cartridge 4 through the hole 32, while the valve 22 is moved from the closed position to the open position, the appendage 23A is dimensioned so that its external diameter is the same diameter as the tubular stem portion 23 which, in the closed position, sealingly engages the hole 32.

[0063] Preferably, to prevent accidental movement of the valve 22 from the closed position before the cartridge 4 is coupled by the atomizer 3, the cartridge 4 is provided with a safety device 35 which must be manually removed by the user before the cartridge 4 is engaged on the atomizer 3. In the examples illustrated, the safety device 35 consists of a pin fixed to the end of cartridge 4 in front of hole 32, but can be replaced by any other device suitable for the purpose.

[0064] Figures 6 to 8 illustrate an alternative embodiment of the electronic cigarette 1, which is different from that described and illustrated above in Figures 1 to 5, in that the external section 27 of the tube 25 does not have the function of a spout, but is sized to fit inside the spout 36 of a cover 37 suitable for being removably coupled to the battery body 2 to contain, within its interior, the cartridge 4 when it is engaged on the atomizer 3.

[0065] According to a variant not illustrated in the embodiment of figures 6 to 8, the cup-shaped body 17 is devoid of tube 25 and the axial end portion of the tubular rod 23 is slidably mounted, with the interposition of a seal, through a hole arranged directly in the bottom wall 19 of the cup-shaped body 17. In this case, the spring 29 can be mounted between the bottom wall 19 and the flange 30 of the tubular rod 23.

[0066] Figures 9 and 10 illustrate another embodiment of the electronic cigarette 1, which is different from those described previously in that the valve 22 does not have a tubular appendage 23A. In this case, the movement of the valve from the closed position to the open position takes place when the cartridge 4 is coupled to the atomizer 3 by the effect of the axial thrust communicated to the end of the tubular rod 23 directly by the atomizing head 11.

[0067] As illustrated in [Fig. 10], when the cartridge 4 is coupled to the atomizer 3 and the valve 22 is in the open position, the atomizing head 11 is completely inside the cartridge 4 and can be impregnated by the vaporizable liquid.

[0068] To prevent vaporizable liquid from leaking from the cartridge 4 through the hole 32, while the valve 22 is moved from the closed position to the open position, the hole 32 is sized to have the same diameter as the atomizing head 11 so that the latter seals tightly to the hole 32, while penetrating the cartridge 4.

[0069] According to different embodiments not illustrated, the spring 29 is absent and return means of another type are provided to maintain the valve 22 in the closed position when the cartridge 4 is new and to return the valve 22 to the closed position when the cartridge 4 is separated from the atomizer 3 to prevent liquid residues from being able to drip outside the cartridge 4.

[0070] The operation of the electronic cartridge 1, with regard to the coupling of the cartridge 4 to the atomizer 3, clearly follows from what has been described previously.

[0071] Following activation of the electronic cigarette 1, the electrical resistance 14 heats and vaporizes the vaporizable liquid which has impregnated the permeable material 15 of the atomizing head 11 and the steam produced, by mixing with the air sucked in by the user, comes out along the chimney 16 and the tubular rod 23 to reach the nozzle and be sucked in by the user.

[0072] The electronic cigarette 1 has significant advantages arising mainly from the fact that the cartridge 4 is simple and economical and does not require the introduction of complicated cutting or lacerating mechanisms carried by the atomizer to open the cartridge when the latter is engaged on the atomizer itself.

[0073] Figures 11 and 12 illustrate another embodiment of the electronic cigarette 1, which is different from that of Figures 9 and 10, in that the end wall 18 of the main body 17 of the cartridge 4 is formed by a ring 38 of suitable material to achieve, in correspondence of the hole 32, a fluid-tight coupling with the external surface of the rod 23 when the valve 22 is in the closed position, and with the external surface of the atomizer 9, either when the cartridge 4 is engaged on the atomizer 9 and the latter slides in the hole 23 to penetrate inside the cartridge 4, or when the valve 22 is in the open position.

[0074] Ideally, to prevent the tubular rod 23 from sliding through the hole 32, the rod 23 has, at its lower end, an annular flange 39 having a larger diameter than the hole 32 so that, when the valve 22 is in the closed position, the annular flange 39 is disposed in abutment against a portion of the ring 38 surrounding the inner edge of the hole 32.

[0075] Ideally, furthermore, in order to improve the tight coupling between the hole 32 and the atomizer 9 when the valve 22 is in the open position, the hole 32 is internally shaped to be complementary to the profile of the part of the atomizer intended to engage the hole 32 in the open position of the valve 22.

[0076] The ring 38 therefore fulfills the dual function of end wall of the main body 17 and of fluid-sealing element which, in the previous embodiments described, is constituted by the seal 31, which can therefore be omitted in this case.

[0077] Preferably, the ring 38 is made from rubber.

[0078] Furthermore, in this embodiment, the coupling interface suitable for removably connecting the cartridge 4 to the battery body 2 is not defined by a thread as in the examples previously described, but by a bayonet mechanism.
