Title of the invention: gas phase chemical analysis method FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The invention relates to the field of chemical analyses and more particularly to chemical analyses in the gas phase.

[0002] In particular, the present invention relates to a method for chemical analysis of a gaseous sample comprising at least one contaminating species with a view to determining the concentration of the at least one contaminating species in said sample. TECHNOLOGICAL BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0003] The detection and quantification of contaminating species in industrial gases is essential in order to guarantee their degree of purity.

[0004] In this respect, it is possible to implement spectroscopic techniques which are not only stable over time, but also have the advantage of being able to be implemented relatively easily. However, there are situations in which the contaminating species are difficult to detect and / or identify by spectroscopy. This is particularly the case for H2S. [0020] [Fig.3] [Fig.3] is a schematic representation of an analysis device above capable of implementing the analysis method according to the present invention. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0021] The present invention relates to a method for chemical analysis of a gaseous sample comprising a carrier gas in which a first species is diluted. In particular, the first species, according to the terms of the present invention, has a spectroscopic activity, called first activity, in a predetermined wavelength range.

[0022] Spectroscopic activity according to the terms of the present invention can be defined as the level of spectroscopic absorption in the predetermined wavelength range.

[0023] Thus, the analysis method according to the present invention comprises a step a) of conversion, in a conversion cell, of the first species into a second species by reaction with a reagent called a conversion reagent, the second species exhibiting a spectroscopic activity, called second activity, greater than the first activity;

[0024] The method also comprises a step b) of acquiring an absorption spectrum, by spectroscopic measurement, of the gaseous sample after execution of step a) in a measuring cell fluidically connected to the conversion bulb;

[0025] Step b) is followed by a step c) of mathematical processing of the spectrum in order to deduce the concentration of the first species in the gaseous sample.

[0026] According to the terms of the present invention, the first species exhibits a spectroscopic activity, called first activity, in the predetermined wavelength range, while the second species exhibits a spectroscopic activity, called second activity, in the predetermined wavelength range. The second spectroscopic activity may for example be at least 2 times, advantageously 10 times, greater than the first spectroscopic activity.

[0027] In other words, and according to the present invention, in the predetermined wavelength range, the maximum absorption level (i.e.: spectroscopic activity) of the second species is higher (advantageously at least twice, advantageously 10 times, higher) than the maximum absorption level of the first species.

[0028] Furthermore, and advantageously, the second species may have, in the predetermined wavelength range, a specific signature. In particular, the second species may have a periodic or pseudoperiodic absorption spectrum allowing unambiguous identification of said second species. A periodic or pseudoperiodic absorption spectrum takes the form of a comb in particular.

[0029] By way of example, and without this being of a limiting nature, it will be considered in the remainder of the statement that the first species is H2S while the second species is SO2. The gaseous sample therefore comprises a carrier gas in which H2S is diluted. The latter can be converted into SO2 by means of a conversion reagent, for example I2O5.

[0030] The reaction of the conversion of H2S into SO2 by I2O5 follows the following reaction:

[0031] 5 H2S+ 3 I2O5 3 I2 + 5 SO2 + 5 H2O

[0032] As an example, [Fig.l] is a graphical representation of the absorption spectrum of H2S (taken as the first species) in the wavelength range 185 nm -225 nm, while [Fig.2] represents the absorption spectrum of SO2 (taken as the second species) in the same wavelength range.

[0033] These two graphic representations show that the absorption level of SO2 in this wavelength range is higher than the absorption level of H2S.

[0034] In other words, the threshold of detectability of H2S by spectroscopic absorption is much better than that of SO2. Thus, the conversion of H2S into SO2 makes it possible to detect the presence of H2S at lower concentrations than by known state-of-the-art techniques based on direct absorption of the H2S compound.

[0035] This latter aspect makes it possible to improve the sensitivity of dosage and / or analysis of a chemical compound diluted in a carrier gas.

[0036] Furthermore, the periodic nature of the absorption spectrum shown in [Fig.2] is characteristic of the presence of SO2. More particularly, the measured period attests to the presence of SO2, while the amplitude of the oscillations is associated with the concentration of SO2 in the carrier gas.

[0037] A mathematical treatment, notably involving a Fourier transform, can be implemented to determine the SO2 concentration in the carrier gas.

[0038] By way of example, the chemical analysis method according to the present invention can be implemented by the chemical analysis device 10 shown in [Fig.3].

[0039] The chemical analysis device 10 notably comprises a conversion bulb 20 in which is arranged a reagent, called a conversion reagent, configured to convert the first species of the gaseous sample into the second species.

[0040] The conversion bulb 20 generally has an elongated shape, and may, for example, be cylindrical. The conversion bulb 20 comprises at one of its ends a first inlet 20a and at the other of its ends a first outlet 20b.

[0041] The conversion bulb 20 comprises in its volume a reagent, called conversion reagent, configured to convert, by chemical means, the first species capable of circulating in gaseous form in said bulb into a second species.

[0042] The conversion reagent may in particular comprise I2O5, for example in the form of powder, or even crystals. Also, in order to prevent the entrainment of I2O5 by the carrier gas during its flow, it may be considered to use membranes, for example PTFE membranes.

[0043] The chemical analysis device 10 also comprises spectroscopic means configured to measure an absorption spectrum of the gaseous sample after conversion of the chlorine to chlorine dioxide.

[0044] More particularly, the spectroscopic means cooperate with a measuring bulb 30 for the purpose of measuring the absorption spectrum when the gaseous sample is in said measuring bulb.

[0045] More particularly, the measuring bulb 30 of generally elongated shape comprises two ends 31a and 31b (opposite one another) each provided with a window 32a and 32b transparent to the wavelengths included in the analysis domain. These two windows 32a and 32b are parallel to each other.

[0046] The conversion bulb 20 may comprise a main body, tubular in shape and hermetically sealed at its ends by PTFE membranes allowing gases to pass through and retaining the conversion reagent.

[0047] The main body may advantageously be transparent and comprise, for example, PMMA or glass.

[0048] The spectroscopic means comprise a spectrograph 61 and a light source 60 configured to emit light radiation covering the analysis domain.

[0049] In particular, the light source 60 is arranged opposite the window 32a in order to allow illumination of a gas sample likely to be found in the measuring bulb 30.

[0050] The spectrograph 61 is, for its part, arranged opposite the window 32b and is arranged to measure the absorption of light radiation by the gaseous sample in the analysis domain. It is understood, without it being necessary to specify it, that a spectrograph measures an absorption spectrum as a function of the wavelength. The spectrograph 61 is advantageously connected to a computer 62 configured to process and / or analyze the spectra collected by said spectrograph 61.

[0051] By “computer” is meant an electronic device configured to perform automatic processing of a spectrum collected by the spectrograph. The computer 62 may comprise a memory space, a processor, a motherboard, a display means, a control interface.

[0052] Furthermore, the measuring bulb 30 is fluidically connected to the conversion bulb 20. In particular, a fluid connection means connects the first outlet 20b to an inlet, called the second inlet 30a, arranged near the end 31a of the measuring bulb 30. The fluid connection means may in particular comprise a fluid connection tube, called the first tube 40a. The fluid connection means may also be provided with a three-way valve (or solenoid valve) 50. Thus, the fluid connection means may comprise a tube 40b connecting the first outlet 20b to the three-way valve 50, the tube 40a connecting the three-way valve 50 to the second inlet 30a, and finally a tube 40c connecting a source of carrier gas 51 to the three-way valve 50.

[0053] The measuring bulb 30 also comprises an outlet, called the second outlet 30b, arranged near the end 31b. This second outlet 30b can in particular be connected to a pump 52 by means of a fluid connection tube, called the second tube 4L. This latter arrangement can in particular be implemented for the purposes of purging and / or transferring the gaseous sample from the measuring bulb.

[0054] The remainder of the statement is devoted to the description of the method of chemical analysis of a gaseous sample comprising a carrier gas in which H2S is diluted. In particular, the carrier gas may comprise nitrogen, CH4, H2, without however limiting the invention to these gases alone.

[0055] According to an advantageous embodiment, the conversion reagent comprises I2O5, in the form of powder or single crystals.

[0056] The reaction between H2S and I2O5 is written as follows:

[0057] 5 H2S+ 3 I2O5 3 I2 + 5 SO2 + 5 H2O

[0058] The chemical analysis method also comprises a step b) of acquiring an absorption spectrum of the gaseous sample after execution of step a) in the measuring cell 30.

[0059] In this regard, the gas sample is transferred (step a1)) from the conversion bulb 20 to the measuring cell 30 via the fluid connection means. In particular, this transfer may involve positioning the three-way valve 50 so as to allow the circulation of the gas sample from the first outlet 20b to the second inlet 30a.

[0060] The acquisition of the absorption spectrum comprises an illumination, by the light source 60, of the gaseous sample present in the measuring cell 30 and a collection of the light signal, after absorption by the gaseous sample, by the spectrograph 61.

[0061] In the wavelength range 185 nm - 225 nm, SO2 exhibits a specific "comb" signature as illustrated in [Fig.2].

[0062] The invention also comprises a step c) of mathematical processing of the absorption spectrum in order to deduce therefrom the concentration of SO2 in the gaseous sample.

[0063] Knowing the SO2 concentration in the gas sample makes it possible to access the initial H2S concentration in the gas sample.

[0064] Step c) of mathematical processing may comprise a calculation by Fourier transform of the absorption spectrum. In particular, the Fourier transform of the spectrum of [Fig.2] is a bell-shaped curve whose area is representative of the concentration of SO2 present in the gaseous sample. Those skilled in the art will recognize that calibration curves and / or charts may be used for the interpretation of the measurements carried out.

[0065] Advantageously, step c) of mathematical processing can be executed by means of the calculator 62.

[0066] Thus, the present invention proposes to determine the concentration of H2S diluted in a carrier gas by converting it into SO2. The latter has, between 185 nm and 225 nm, an absorption level higher than that of H2S, and thus makes it possible to measure H2S concentrations of a sample below the thresholds usually accepted when implementing analysis techniques known to those skilled in the art.

[0067] The chemical analysis method may comprise a step aO), preceding step a), background measurement which comprises the measurement of the absorption spectrum of a gaseous sample, called background, formed solely of the carrier gas. This step aO) notably comprises the acquisition of an absorption spectrum of carrier gas (free of dichlorine) present in the measuring cell according to terms identical to step b).

[0068] The carrier gas may notably have been taken from the carrier gas source 51.

[0069] Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiments described and it is possible to provide alternative embodiments without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the claims.
