Description

Title of the invention: Thermal management device for batteries for electric or hybrid vehicles

[0001] This invention relates to the field of electric and hybrid motor vehicles and more particularly to a thermal management device for the batteries of such a motor vehicle.

[0002] Current electric or hybrid motor vehicles increasingly often include means for thermal management of the batteries as well as means for thermal management of the components of the electrical power chain such as the power electronics and / or the electric motor of said electric vehicle. Indeed, in order for the batteries and these components to be as efficient as possible, they must remain at an optimal operating temperature. It is therefore necessary to cool them during use so that they do not excessively exceed this optimal operating temperature. Similarly, it may also be necessary to heat them, for example in cold weather, so that they reach this optimal operating temperature in the shortest possible time. In addition, these components may have different optimal operating temperatures, which implies a differentiation of thermal management for each.

[0003] It is thus known for effective thermal management of batteries to use a dedicated battery thermal management circuit. In this battery thermal management circuit, a heat transfer fluid is intended to circulate. This battery thermal management circuit is generally associated with a cooling circuit comprising a cooler. The components of the electrical power chain, formed in particular by the powertrain and the internal charger, are generally associated with a heat transfer fluid circulation circuit comprising a radiator for cooling them.

[0004] However, these circuits and the interactions between them make them generally complex and expensive to produce, especially since multiple operating modes may be necessary and / or requested by automobile manufacturers.

[0005] One of the aims of the present invention is therefore to at least partially remedy the drawbacks of the prior art and to propose an improved and economical management device.

Conversely, the term "placed downstream" means that an element is placed after another with respect to the direction of circulation of the fluid.

[0030] [Fig.l] shows a thermal management device 1 for an electric or hybrid motor vehicle. This thermal management device 1 firstly comprises a first loop A (shown in thick lines) in which a heat transfer fluid is intended to circulate. This first loop A comprises in particular a first reversible pump A1, a first heat exchange device A2 with the batteries of the motor vehicle and a dual-fluid heat exchanger A3. The first heat exchange device A2 with the batteries can be of different types, for example by immersing the battery cells in a dielectric heat transfer fluid circulating in said first loop A. The dual-fluid heat exchanger A3 is connected jointly with another cooling circuit C (not shown) configured to allow the absorption and / or transfer of heat energy such as for example a reversible air conditioning circuit.

[0031] The thermal management device 1 also comprises a second loop B (shown in thick lines) in which a heat transfer fluid is also intended to circulate. This second loop B comprises in particular a second reversible pump B1, a second heat exchange device B2 with the powertrain of the motor vehicle and a radiator B3 intended to be crossed by an external air flow. The radiator B3 may in particular be arranged on the front face of the motor vehicle.

[0032] The first loop A and the second loop B are fluidically connected to each other by a first branch line D and a second branch line E.

[0033] The first bypass line D connects, according to a first direction of circulation of the heat transfer fluid in the first A and the second B loop (visible in [Fig.2]), a first connection point DI to a second connection point D2. The first connection point DI of the first bypass line D is arranged on the second loop B downstream of the radiator B3. The second connection point D2 of the first bypass line D is arranged on the first loop A upstream of the two-fluid heat exchanger A3. The first bypass pipe D also comprises a first non-return device 11 configured to block the heat transfer fluid flowing back from its second connection point D2 to its first connection point D1.

[0034] A second non-return device 12 is also arranged, in the first direction of circulation of the heat transfer fluid, on the second loop B downstream of the radiator B3. More precisely, the second non-return device 12 is arranged between the radiator B3 and the first connection point D1 of the first bypass pipe D. The second non-return device 12 is in particular configured to block the heat transfer fluid flowing back from the first connection point D1 of the first bypass pipe D to the radiator B3.

[0035] The second bypass line E connects, still according to the first direction of circulation of the heat transfer fluid in the first A and the second B loop (visible in [Fig.2]), a first connection point El to a second connection point E2. The first connection point El of the second bypass line E is arranged on the first loop A downstream of the two-fluid heat exchanger A3. The second connection point E2 of the second bypass line E is arranged on the second loop B upstream of the radiator B3.

[0036] A third non-return device 13 is also arranged on the first loop A, in the first direction of circulation of the heat transfer fluid, downstream of the two-fluid heat exchanger A3. More precisely, this third non-return device 13 is arranged between the two-fluid heat exchanger A3 and the first connection point E1 of the second bypass pipe E. The third non-return device 13 is in particular configured to block the heat transfer fluid flowing back from the first connection point E1 of the second bypass pipe E to the two-fluid heat exchanger A3.

[0037] With respect to the first bypass line D and the second bypass line E, the first reversible pump A1 is more particularly arranged on the first loop A, in the first direction of circulation of the heat transfer fluid, upstream of the second connection point D2 of the first bypass line D and downstream of the first connection point E1 of the second bypass line E.

[0038] Similarly, with respect to the first bypass line D and the second bypass line E, the second reversible pump B1 is arranged on the second loop B, in the first direction of circulation of the heat transfer fluid, downstream of the first connection point D1 of the first bypass line D and upstream of the second connection point E2 of the second bypass line E.

[0039] The first A1 and the second B1 pump are in particular independent of each other and reversible. Thus, they can operate in both directions in order to propel the heat transfer fluid. In addition, at least the second reversible pump B1 may be configured to block the heat transfer fluid when it is stopped. Preferably, the two reversible pumps A1, B1 may be configured to block the heat transfer fluid when they are stopped.

[0040] The second loop B may also comprise a third bypass pipe F connecting, in the first direction of circulation of the heat transfer fluid, a first connection point F1 to a second connection point F2. The first connection point F1 is in particular arranged upstream of the second heat exchange device B2. The second connection point F2 is in turn arranged downstream of the second heat exchange device B2. This third bypass pipe F comprises in particular a third heat exchange device B4 with, for example, an on-board charger of the motor vehicle.

[0041] When this third bypass line F is present, the second pump B1 is more particularly arranged upstream of the first connection point F1 of the third bypass line F or downstream of the second connection point F2 of the third bypass line F.

[0042] This third bypass pipe F may in particular comprise a flow regulator B5 of the heat transfer fluid in order to control the flow rate of the heat transfer fluid passing through said third bypass pipe F and more particularly passing through the third heat exchange device B4.

[0043] The second loop B may further comprise a fourth bypass pipe G connecting, in the first direction of circulation of the heat transfer fluid, a first connection point G1 to a second connection point G2. The first connection point G1 of this fourth bypass pipe G is in particular arranged downstream of the second heat exchange device B2, between the second heat exchange device B2 and the second connection point E2 of the second bypass pipe E. If the third bypass pipe F is present, the first connection point G1 of this fourth bypass pipe G is more particularly arranged downstream of the second connection point F2 of the third bypass pipe F.The second connection point G2 is arranged upstream of the second heat exchange device B2, between the first connection point DI of the first bypass pipe D and the second heat exchange device B2. If the third bypass pipe F is present, the second connection point G2 of this fourth bypass pipe G is more particularly arranged upstream of the first connection point Fl of the third bypass pipe F.

[0044] The fourth bypass line G includes in particular a device B6 for redirecting the heat transfer fluid coming from the second heat exchange device. heat B2. This redirection device B6 can for example be a three-way valve arranged at the first connection point G1 of the fourth bypass line G, as in the example illustrated in [Fig.l]. Other redirection solutions such as by means of stop valves can also be considered.

[0045] When the fourth bypass line G is present, the second pump B1 is more particularly arranged on the second loop B upstream of the first connection point G1 of the fourth bypass line G and downstream of the second connection point G2 of the fourth bypass line G.

[0046] The first loop A may also comprise an electric heater A4 of the heat transfer fluid arranged upstream of the first heat exchange device A2, in the first direction of circulation of the heat transfer fluid.

[0047] First mode of operation:

[0048] The thermal management device 1 may in particular be configured to operate in a first operating mode illustrated in [Fig.2].

[0049] In this first operating mode, the first reversible pump A1 operates in a first direction of circulation so that the heat transfer fluid circulates from the first heat exchange device A2, to the second connection point D2 of the first bypass pipe D, then to the two-fluid heat exchanger A3. The heat transfer fluid does not pass through the first bypass pipe D because of the first non-return device 11. At the outlet of the two-fluid heat exchanger A3, the heat transfer fluid passes through the third non-return device 13. Finally, the heat transfer fluid passes through the first connection point E1 of the second bypass pipe E before returning to the first heat exchange device A2.

[0050] According to a first variant, the other cooling circuit C is in operation and the heat transfer fluid exchanges heat energy with the latter. If the other cooling circuit C is for example an air conditioning circuit in cooling mode, the heat transfer fluid will transfer heat energy to said cooling circuit C allowing the cooling of the batteries via the first heat exchange device A2. If the other cooling circuit C is for example an air conditioning circuit in heat pump mode, the heat transfer fluid can recover heat energy from said cooling circuit C in order to heat batteries via the first heat exchange device A2.

[0051] According to a second variant, the other cooling circuit C is not in operation. In this case, the heat transfer fluid circulates in the first loop A without exchanging heat energy with the other cooling circuit C. This circulation of the heat transfer fluid nevertheless allows homogenization of the temperature. temperature of the batteries for example between the different cells that compose them.

[0052] Still in this first embodiment, the second reversible pump B1 also operates in a first direction of circulation so that the heat transfer fluid circulates from the second heat exchange device B2, towards the second connection point E2 of the second bypass pipe E, then towards the radiator B3. At the outlet of the radiator B3, the heat transfer fluid passes through the second non-return device 12. The heat transfer fluid then circulates towards the first connection point DI of the first bypass pipe D before returning to the second heat exchange device B2.

[0053] If the third bypass pipe F is present, parallel to the second exchange device B2, a portion of heat transfer fluid also passes through said third bypass pipe F and therefore the third heat exchange device B4.

[0054] If the fourth bypass pipe G is present, the redirection device B6 is in particular configured so that the heat transfer fluid coming from the second heat exchange device B2, and possibly coming from the third bypass pipe F, is redirected towards the radiator B3 and does not pass through the fourth bypass pipe G.

[0055] By passing through the radiator B3, the heat transfer fluid will release heat energy to an external air flow and thus allow the cooling of the powertrain of the motor vehicle via the second heat exchange device B2, and possibly also of an on-board charger of the motor vehicle via the third heat exchange device B4.

[0056] Second mode of operation:

[0057] The thermal management device 1 may in particular be configured to operate in a second operating mode illustrated in [Fig.3].

[0058] In this second operating mode, the second reversible pump B1 operates in a second direction of circulation, opposite to the first direction of circulation, so that the heat transfer fluid circulates from the second heat exchange device B2 to the first connection point DI of the first bypass pipe D. The heat transfer fluid does not reach the radiator B3 due to the second non-return device 12. The heat transfer fluid passes through the first bypass pipe D, and therefore the first non-return device 11, towards its second connection point D2. The heat transfer fluid then circulates from the second connection point D2 of the first bypass pipe D to the first connection point E1 of the second bypass pipe E by passing through the two-fluid exchanger A3. At the outlet of the two-fluid heat exchanger A3, the heat transfer fluid passes through the third non-return device 13.The heat transfer fluid. then crosses the second bypass pipe E to join the second heat exchange device B2.

[0059] Still according to this second mode of operation, the first reversible pump A1 is stopped, blocking the circulation of the heat transfer fluid and preventing the latter from passing through the first heat exchange device A2.

[0060] If the third bypass pipe F is present, parallel to the second exchange device B2, a portion of heat transfer fluid also passes through said third bypass pipe F and therefore the third heat exchange device B4.

[0061] If the fourth bypass pipe G is present, the redirection device B6 is in particular configured so that the heat transfer fluid coming from the second heat exchange device B2, and possibly coming from the second bypass pipe E, is redirected towards the second exchange device B2 and possibly the third heat exchange device B4.

[0062] By passing through the two-fluid exchanger A3, the heat transfer fluid transfers heat energy with the other cooling circuit C which is in operation. The heat generated by the powertrain of the motor vehicle and possibly the internal charger is thus recovered to heat the heat transfer fluid circulating in the other cooling circuit C, for example when the latter operates in a heat pump mode.

[0063] Third mode of operation:

[0064] The thermal management device 1 may in particular be configured to operate in a third operating mode illustrated in [Fig.4].

[0065] In this third mode of operation, the first reversible pump A1 operates in a second direction of circulation so that a first portion of heat transfer fluid circulates from the first heat exchange device A2, towards the first connection point E1 of the second bypass pipe E and passes through said second bypass pipe E. At the first connection point E1, the heat transfer fluid does not reach the two-fluid exchanger A3 due to the third non-return device 13.

[0066] The second reversible pump B1 operates in its first direction of circulation so that a second portion of heat transfer fluid circulates from the second heat exchange device B2 to the second connection point E2 of the second bypass pipe E and joins the first portion of heat transfer fluid.

[0067] From the second connection point E2 of the second bypass pipe E, the heat transfer fluid then flows towards the radiator B3, then towards the first connection point DI of the first bypass pipe D. At the outlet of the radiator B3, the heat transfer fluid passes through the second non-return device 12.

[0068] From the first connection point DI of the first bypass pipe D, a first portion of the heat transfer fluid passes through the first bypass pipe D, and passes through the first non-return device 11, to reach the first heat exchange device A2. At the outlet of the first bypass pipe D, the heat transfer fluid does not pass through the two-fluid exchanger A3 because the third non-return device 13 is kept closed by the heat transfer fluid coming from the first non-return device 11 and especially from the first reversible pump A1. Indeed, the pressure of the heat transfer fluid at the first connection point E1 of the second bypass pipe E is higher than the pressure of the heat transfer fluid at the second connection point D2 of the first bypass pipe D because of the pressure losses.

[0069] Still from the first connection point DI of the first bypass pipe D, a second portion of the heat transfer fluid joins the second heat exchange device B2.

[0070] If the third bypass pipe F is present, parallel to the second exchange device B2, another portion of heat transfer fluid also passes through said third bypass pipe F and therefore the third heat exchange device B4.

[0071] If the fourth bypass pipe G is present, the redirection device B6 is in particular configured so that the portion of heat transfer fluid coming from the second heat exchange device B2, and possibly coming from the third bypass pipe F, is redirected towards the second connection point E2 of the second bypass pipe E and does not pass through the fourth bypass pipe G.

[0072] In this third embodiment, the powertrain, the batteries and possibly the internal charger all give off heat to the heat transfer fluid and this heat is evacuated only by the radiator B3, in particular if the temperature of the external air flow is lower than that of the batteries. If the temperature of the external air flow is higher than that of the batteries then these elements are not cooled but heated by the external air flow.

[0073] Fourth mode of operation:

[0074] The thermal management device 1 may in particular be configured to operate in a fourth operating mode illustrated in [Fig.5].

[0075] In this fourth mode of operation, the first reversible pump A1 operates in its first direction of circulation so that a first portion of heat transfer fluid circulates from the first heat exchange device A2 to the second connection point D2 of the first bypass pipe D.

[0076] The second reversible pump B1 operates in its second direction circulation, so that a second portion of heat transfer fluid circulates from the second heat exchange device B2 to the first connection point DI of the first bypass pipe D. The heat transfer fluid does not reach the radiator B3 due to the second non-return device 12. This second portion of heat transfer fluid passes through the first bypass pipe D, and therefore the first non-return device 11, to the second connection point D2 of the first bypass pipe D and joins the first portion of heat transfer fluid.

[0077] From the second connection point D2 of the first bypass pipe D, the heat transfer fluid flows towards the two-fluid heat exchanger A3 then towards the first connection point El of the second bypass pipe E. For this, the heat transfer fluid passes through the third non-return device 13.

[0078] From the first connection point El of the second bypass pipe E, a first portion of the heat transfer fluid passes through the second bypass pipe E to reach the second heat exchange device B2.

[0079] Still from the first connection point El of the second bypass pipe 3, a second portion of the heat transfer fluid joins the first heat exchange device A2.

[0080] If the third bypass pipe F is present, parallel to the second exchange device B2, a portion of heat transfer fluid also passes through said third bypass pipe F and therefore the third heat exchange device B4.

[0081] If the fourth bypass pipe G is present, the redirection device B6 is in particular configured so that the heat transfer fluid coming from the second heat exchange device B2, and possibly coming from the second bypass pipe E, is redirected towards the second exchange device B2 and possibly the third heat exchange device B4.

[0082] According to a first variant of this fourth operating mode, the other cooling circuit C is in operation and the heat transfer fluid exchanges heat energy with the latter. If the other cooling circuit C is for example an air conditioning circuit in cooling mode, the heat transfer fluid will transfer heat energy to said cooling circuit C allowing the cooling of the batteries as well as the powertrain and possibly the internal charger. If the other cooling circuit C is for example an air conditioning circuit in heat pump mode, the heat transfer fluid can recover heat energy from said cooling circuit C in order to heat the batteries as well as the powertrain and possibly the internal charger.

[0083] According to a second variant, the other cooling circuit C is not in operation. In this case, the heat transfer fluid circulates without exchanging energy ca lorific with the other cooling circuit C. This circulation of the heat transfer fluid nevertheless allows a homogenization of the temperature of the batteries for example between the different cells which compose them or even a transfer of heat energy between the batteries, the powertrain and possibly the internal charger. For example, if the temperature of the batteries is higher than that of the powertrain and possibly the internal charger, heat energy can be dissipated from the batteries to the powertrain and possibly the internal charger. Conversely, if the temperature of the batteries is lower than that of the powertrain and possibly the internal charger, heat energy can be recovered from the powertrain and possibly the internal charger in order to cool the batteries.

[0084] Fifth mode of operation:

[0085] The thermal management device 1 may in particular be configured to operate in a fifth operating mode illustrated in [Fig.6].

[0086] In this fifth mode of operation and like the first mode of operation, the first reversible pump A1 operates in a first direction of circulation so that the heat transfer fluid circulates from the first heat exchange device A2, to the second connection point D2 of the first bypass pipe D, then to the two-fluid heat exchanger A3. The heat transfer fluid then passes through the third non-return device 13. Finally, the heat transfer fluid passes through the first connection point E1 of the second bypass pipe E before returning to the first heat exchange device A2.

[0087] According to a first variant, the other cooling circuit C is in operation and the heat transfer fluid exchanges heat energy with the latter.

[0088] According to a second variant, the other cooling circuit C is not in operation. In this case, the heat transfer fluid circulates in the first loop A without exchanging heat energy with the other cooling circuit C. This circulation of the heat transfer fluid nevertheless allows homogenization of the temperature of the batteries, for example between the different cells which compose them.

[0089] The second reversible pump B1 operates in its first direction of circulation so that the heat transfer fluid circulates from the second device heat exchange device B2, to the first connection point G1 of the fourth bypass line G. The redirection device B6 redirects the heat transfer fluid so that it passes through the fourth bypass line G before returning to the second heat exchange device B2. The redirection device B6 also blocks the refrigerant coming from the second connection point E2 of the second bypass line E.

[0090] If the third bypass pipe F is present, parallel to the second exchange device B2, a portion of heat transfer fluid also passes through said third bypass pipe F and therefore the third heat exchange device B4.

[0091] This circulation within the second loop B allows homogenization of the temperature of the powertrain and possibly of the internal charger.

[0092] Sixth mode of operation:

[0093] The thermal management device 1 may in particular be configured to operate in a sixth operating mode illustrated in [Fig.7].

[0094] In this sixth operating mode, the first reversible pump A1 operates in its second direction of circulation, so that the heat transfer fluid circulates from the first heat exchange device A2 to the first connection point E1 of the second bypass pipe E. At the first connection point E1, the heat transfer fluid does not reach the two-fluid exchanger A3 due to the third non-return device 13.

[0095] The heat transfer fluid passes through the second bypass pipe E and then the radiator B3. At the outlet of the radiator B3, the heat transfer fluid reaches the first connection point DI of the first bypass pipe D, in particular passing through the second non-return device 12. The heat transfer fluid then passes through the first bypass pipe D, and therefore the first non-return device 11, to reach the first heat exchange device A2.At the outlet of the first bypass pipe D, the heat transfer fluid does not pass through the two-fluid exchanger A3 because the third non-return device 13 is kept closed by the heat transfer fluid coming from the first non-return device 11 and especially from the first reversible pump AL. In fact, the pressure of the heat transfer fluid at the first connection point El of the second bypass pipe E is higher than the pressure of the heat transfer fluid at the second connection point D2 of the first bypass pipe D because of the pressure losses.

[0096] The second reversible pump B1 operates in its first direction of circulation so that the heat transfer fluid circulates from the second heat exchange device B2, towards the first connection point G1 of the fourth bypass pipe G. The redirection device B6 redirects the heat transfer fluid so that it passes through the fourth bypass line G before returning to the second heat exchange device B2. The redirection device B6 also blocks the refrigerant coming from the second connection point E2 of the second bypass line E.

[0097] If the third bypass pipe F is present, parallel to the second exchange device B2, a portion of heat transfer fluid also passes through said third bypass pipe F and therefore the third heat exchange device B4.

[0098] This sixth operating mode allows the batteries to be cooled by means of the radiator B3 while allowing homogenization of the temperature of the powertrain and possibly the internal charger.

[0099] Thus, it is clear that the thermal management device 1, due to its architecture, allows different operating modes and this in an economical manner, in particular thanks to the use of three judiciously arranged non-return devices 11, 12, 13.
