Description

Title of the invention: HIGH SALICYLIC ACID, SULFATE AND PEG-FREE CLEANING COMPOSITION FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] This disclosure relates to a cleaning composition with a high salicylic acid content. CONTEXT OF THE INVENTION

[0002] Acne is a common skin condition and is treated with various agents. Salicylic acid, a mild beta-hydroxy acid known to facilitate the removal of dead skin cells and other cellular debris, is often used in the treatment of acne, as well as other skin conditions including psoriasis, keratoses, and ichthyosis. Commercial forms of cosmetic products that include salicylic acid include scrubs, cleansers, and leave-on treatments in the form of lotions, creams, and makeup. Salicylic acid is known to have very low solubility in water and is prone to recrystallization, particularly at high temperatures.Consequently, one of the problems posed by many of these products is that they deliver salicylic acid that is only temporarily available on the skin, as in cleansers and scrubs, or that is in relatively small quantities, thus preventing lasting effectiveness on the skin to combat acne and other skin conditions that benefit from the agent.

[0003] Compositions with a salicylic acid concentration exceeding 1% present the problem of phase separation or crystallization and are also prone to cloudiness with a transparency of less than 100%. Stable solubilization of salicylic acid in quantities of 1% by weight or more can be achieved using solubilizing thickeners and surfactants containing polyethylene glycol (PEG) and sulfates. While these ingredients provide stability to salicylic acid, they cause dryness and discomfort to the skin and are increasingly unpopular with consumers. Without sulfates and / or PEG, the weakness of salicylic acid is precipitation, which not only affects the availability of the active ingredient for treatment but also negatively impacts product stability.

[0004] Consequently, there is a need for a composition that overcomes the shortcomings of the prior art and offers benefits that include a stable formulation with high amounts of salicylic acid that demonstrates the ability to cleanse the skin and provide a persistent delivery of a skin active ingredient, for example, salicylic acid. salicylic acid and its derivatives. The present invention proposes such a composition which remains surprisingly stable in the absence of PEG and sulfates and demonstrates efficacy in delivering and depositing active ingredients on the skin, in particular salicylic acid and its derivatives. [0030] It must be understood that both the preceding general description and the detailed description that follows are provided by way of example and explanation only, and do not limit the invention. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0031] The cleansing composition overcomes the shortcomings of the art regarding the instability induced by salicylic acid in cleansing compositions. Although sulfate- and PEG-based surfactants and solubilizers are necessary to achieve stability at high amounts of salicylic acid, the inventors have unexpectedly shown that the inventive cleansing composition, as disclosed and given by way of example herein, demonstrates 100% transparency and stability from crystallization, precipitation, and phase separation; has a pleasant lather; is thick and non-drip, allowing for easy application to the skin and retention on the skin before rinsing; and demonstrates the deposition and retention of effective amounts of beta-hydroxy acid, for example, salicylic acid, even after rinsing.

[0032] The benefits of the inventive composition are remarkably achieved in the absence of PEG- and sulfate-containing ingredients, which are commonly used, accepted, and understood in the art as necessary to solubilize and stabilize large quantities of SA. These PEG- and sulfate-containing ingredients are expressly excluded from the inventive composition. The composition has a viscosity in the range of approximately 15 UD to approximately 50 UD, which is necessary to provide retention on the skin and resistance to runoff before rinsing, and more particularly in the range of approximately 25 UD to approximately 35 UD. In contrast, examples of comparative compositions lacking the specific combination of claimed ingredients are unstable and much more liquid, demonstrating negligible viscosity, and therefore unsuitable for retention on the skin before rinsing, and much less effective for depositing SA on the skin.Furthermore, although a reference composition containing PEG and sulfate ingredients and high amounts of salicylic acid demonstrates stability and viscosity within an acceptable range, it has a viscosity less than half the average viscosity of the embodiments of the inventive compositions, all of which have a viscosity greater than 30 UD.

[0033] The inventors have demonstrated a clear solution to the problems associated with the use of less desirable PEG and sulfate-containing ingredients to accomplish the solubilization of SA, offering a composition with a pleasant and desirable smooth and foamy feel that avoids the drying effects of PEG and sulfates.

[0034] The improved deposition and retention of salicylic acid was demonstrated herein by visual observation (naked eye), the deposition was evaluated by in vitro tests on synthetic skin (Bio skin), and the foaming was demonstrated by a foaming analyzer as mentioned herein.

[0035] In addition, the inventive cleansing composition demonstrates stability from phase separation, high foaming quality, high transparency (free from clouding) and a gentle aesthetic when applied to the skin. DEFINITIONS

[0036] The term “skin,” as used here, includes cutaneous materials containing keratin, such as facial and body skin, scalp, eyebrows, and lips. As mentioned in the examples here, Bioskin is a substrate manufactured in the form of a pseudo-skin that is a skin substitute and is known in cosmetics and other industries for its representative resemblance to keratinous substrates, such as skin.

[0037] “Keratinous substrate” and “keratinous tissue” each include, but are not limited to limit, skin, hair and nails.

Reference is made to a known test method. The establishment of in vitro foam formation using equipment well-known in the art, namely analysis using a Krauss DFA100™ dynamic foam analyzer, provides a relative measure of the foam formation obtained, as described in more detail here. In some examples, foaming is described as the relative density of foam formation per unit area compared to other formulations tested under the same conditions. In some examples, the bubble count using the specified foam analyzer is provided. Foaming capability, or good foaming or high foaming as used here, compared to foaming on a keratinous substrate, such as facial skin, is based on a scale from low to high.

[0042] “Stable” and “Stability” as used herein mean that the cleaning composition shows no signs of significant changes in one or more of the following: color, odor, pH, or viscosity at room temperature and at temperatures in the range of approximately 25°C to approximately 45°C. In various embodiments, an inventive composition remains stable at temperatures in the range of approximately 25°C to approximately 45°C for a period of time of at least one month, or at least two months, or any intermediate value, range, or sub-range. The cleaning composition is stable at 45°C for three months, wherein stability includes a clear (100% transparent) appearance with no cloudiness, no loss of viscosity, and no formation of crystals or precipitation, for example, no precipitation of salicylic acid. For example, as described here, the use of certain naturally occurring thickeners, such as chitosan, polyethyleneimine (PEI) or polylysine, resulted in unstable compositions in which there was distinct phase separation.

[0043] References to "free from turbidity" as used herein mean that the cleaning composition is essentially 100% clear, which probably means that all of the salicylic acid is essentially maintained in solubilized, clear or free from turbidity form, which can be visually confirmed on the basis of the absence of crystals and the absence of turbidity, and more specifically by means of a spectrophotometer or similar instrument to measure the type and amount of light passing through in which 100% light transmission (using, for example, a Varian Cary 5000 uv-vis-nir spectrophotometer) is equivalent to = 100% clear and free from turbidity.

[0172] The stability of each composition was evaluated, including visual indicators of stability, including precipitation, turbidity; viscosity and deposition on a skin-like substrate.

[0173] Each of the listed inventive and comparative formulations was visually evaluated with the naked eye for clarity (cloudiness) and stability at two months under ambient conditions of 25°C, where the comparative formulations were each differentiated from invention 1 in that they did not contain lauryl lactate, or one or more ingredients were replaced, as indicated.

[0174] [Table 5]

[0176] With reference to the results shown in Table 5, the comparative formulations all demonstrated instability at 2 months, while the embodiments of the inventive composition tested remained stable beyond two months and, moreover, demonstrated stability at 45°C after a period of three months. Furthermore, only the inventive formulations demonstrated phase stability, clarity (absence of cloudiness – assumed to represent sustained solubilization of salicylic acid in the presence of lauryl lactate), and satisfactory deposition of SA on the skin.

[0177] The results with substituted cationic agents surprisingly and unexpectedly show that the mere inclusion of a cationic agent, such as a naturally occurring cationic agent like chitosan or a polyamine, is not sufficient to provide a stable composition. Similarly, the results with substituted surfactants surprisingly and unexpectedly show that an amphoteric surfactant such as coco betaine alone is insufficient to provide a stable composition, whereas a combination of amphoteric and anionic surfactants provides a stable composition.

[0178] Embodiments of the inventive compositions were also evaluated against the reference composition for comparative performance in terms of stability and salicylic acid deposition on the skin. Both the inventive and reference compositions demonstrated stability. After rinsing with Bio skin in vitro substrates, positive retention of salicylic acid on the skin was observed for both the inventive and reference compositions, with comparable results. These results compared to the reference unexpectedly demonstrate that a composition free of sulfates and PEG-based surfactants can stabilize high amounts of salicylic acid. Example 4#: Viscosity and Sa deposition

[0179] Viscosity was measured in UD units using a Rheomat R180 viscometer with an M3 spindle for approximately 10 minutes at 25 °C. The stable inventive compositions demonstrate viscosity in the range of approximately 15 UD to approximately 50 UD (M3). In some particular embodiments, the viscosity is in the range of approximately 25 UD to approximately 35 UD. Unsatisfactory compositions are considered unstable at viscosities below 15 UD or above 50 UD. For example, as described herein, the use of certain surfactants, such as coco-betaine alone in the absence of other surfactants, resulted in unstable and / or insufficient viscosity.

[0180] Salicylic acid deposition test

[0181] Processing of BIOSKIN samples: BIOSKIN samples approximately 2 inches by 2 inches were provided. Each BIOSKIN sample was processed with one of an inventive, exemplary, and comparative composition by applying approximately 0.5 g of the test composition with a cleaning brush (Clarisonic™ brush). The cleaned samples were soaked in water at 40°C for approximately 30 seconds, then massaged with the cleaning brush for approximately one minute. The samples were then rinsed under water at 40°C and air-dried for approximately one hour. The samples were then soaked in a 0.01% iron chloride solution (FeCl3) for approximately one hour and then air-dried overnight.

[0182] The color of each treated BIOSKIN sample (compared to an untreated control sample) was measured using a handheld colorimeter, and the measurements were analyzed to provide a color change (resulting from the binding of the iron compound to the deposited SA) expressed as a percentage color change relative to the control. The results are shown in Table 6 below.

[0183] [Table 6]

[0184] Table 6: Viscosity and deposition of salicylic acid with inventive, comparative and reference compositions Reference Inventive 1 Inventive 2 Inventive 3 Comparative 1 Sulfate surfactant + 2% SA Lauryl lactate + 2% SA Lauryl lactate + 1% SA Lauryl lactate + 1.5% SA No lauryl lactate + 2% SA % mean color change 16.89 19.46 17.33 18.25 11.35 Viscosity (M3) UD 15.6 35.7 30.5 33.1 < 0 out of range

[0185] With reference to the results shown in Table 5, it is clear that each embodiment of the inventive composition demonstrates a significant level of SA deposition on the synthetic skin, based on the measured color change, and the extent of deposition is comparable to the reference. Furthermore, each embodiment of the inventive composition demonstrates a viscosity in the range of approximately 15 UD to approximately 50 UD, which is necessary to confer retention on the skin and resistance to runoff before rinsing, whereas the comparative composition is much more liquid, demonstrating negligible viscosity, and therefore unsuitable for retention on the skin before rinsing, and much less effective for SA deposition. on the skin. Furthermore, although the Reference demonstrates a viscosity within an acceptable range, it is less than half the viscosity of the embodiments of the inventive compositions, all of which have a viscosity greater than 30 UD.

[0186] Therefore, as the examples above show, the inventive composition provides a stable architecture that is sufficiently thick and spreadable to facilitate application to the skin and the associated retention of effective amounts of SA on the skin after rinsing. This is remarkably accomplished in the absence of ingredients containing PEG and sulfate, which are commonly used, accepted, and understood in the art as necessary to solubilize and stabilize large quantities of SA, and which ingredients are expressly excluded from the inventive composition.
