Abstract
Description
[002] Consumer consciousness towards sustainable and environmentally friendly shopping practices has steadily increased in recent years. This awareness has led to the rise of sustainable shopping solutions such as reusable grocery bags and containers, as opposed to single-use plastic bags and containers, which have been recognized as contributing significantly to environmental pollution and climate change.
[003] However, pre-existing reusable grocery bag solutions present numerous drawbacks that can discourage their consistent use among consumers. A common reusable bag often lacks compartments or structure, leading to disorganization, potential bruising or damage of sensitive produce, and difficulty in locating items. This problem is often exacerbated when attempting to use multiple reusable bags simultaneously, which can be cumbersome and inefficient. Consumer resistance to the adoption of purchasing unpackaged produce and using reusable packaging has been reported to be directly associated with lack of convenience and damage to the produce in transit (for example bruising), remembering reusing packaging and transporting bulky glass or plastic containers.
[004] Existing reusable containers for loose produce like rice, lentils, dried fruit, nuts, and ground coffee can be bulky, challenging to seal properly, and often do not preserve the freshness of the produce as effectively as single-use packaging. These factors often deter customers from purchasing loose produce or other bulk items, ultimately limiting the reach and impact of sustainable shopping practices. The shelf life and quality of dry produce like rice, flour, dried fruit, nuts, cereals, ground coffee is enhanced when store in the absence of oxygen (air). Single use packaging is typically not vacuum packed, and reuse packaging does not easily provide for creating a vacuum without and additional pump.
[005] Furthermore, pre-existing reusable grocery bag solutions do not typically provide a comprehensive, customizable solution tailored to a consumer's specific shopping needs. For 1 example, consumers who purchase a range of items, from dry produce to bakery items and returnable packaging items, must often use a variety of disparate containers and paper bags, contributing to climate change, disorganization and potential food wastage due to improper storage and being force to purchase in prepackaged quantities.
[006] Additionally, many existing reusable grocery bags and containers are not designed to effectively accommodate return-to-store packaging systems, thus creating inefficiencies in the process of returning used packaging to the store. There are also ongoing challenges regarding the storage and transportation of used packaging items in a manner that is hygienic and convenient for the consumer. Most plastic film packaging such as those used for the sale of sliced bread and fruit and vegetables can only be recycled if returned to a large supermarket. A lot of consumer awareness and convenience has resulted in very low recycling rates for these items. When the UK Governments deposit return scheme goes live, plastic bottles and aluminum cans will need to be recycled in store for consumers to receive their packaging deposits.
[007] The aforementioned drawbacks and challenges associated with the current state of the art indicate a need for an improved reusable grocery bag kit system that is convenient, versatile, sustainable, and effectively facilitates various shopping schemes.
[008] Therefore, a reusable grocery bag kit that overcomes these limitations, incorporates sustainable materials, provides effective preservation for dry ambient food produce, and allows easy handling and organization of various types of groceries would be highly desirable. The system should be customizable and facilitate return-to-store packaging systems, encouraging more sustainable shopping practices and increasing the adoption of such practices among consumers. Summary
[009] The present invention is aimed at providing an improved, efficient, and sustainable solution for grocery shopping, storage, and transportation needs. In an embodiment, the invention includes a reusable grocery bag kit that is designed to facilitate circular shopping schemes. The kit includes various components to accommodate different types of food items and returnable packaging items.
[010] One aspect of the invention is a reusable grocery bag with a variety of compartments, including inner compartments, outer compartments, and attachable nets. A divider inside the bag body, which can be opened and closed by a popper system, further enhances the organization. The compartments can be made from different materials, including waterproof materials to prevent leaks. The bag may also be provided with clips or other mechanisms for securing additional bags to the outer bag body. The bag will be made of recycled and natural materials, aligning with sustainability goals. [Oil] The bag and kit may be made from 100% hemp, as industrially produced hemp is an unmatched crop in carbon sequestration, and its production creates far less environmental pollution and resource demands (water, land, fertilizers) that other sustainable crops. Hemp canvas is antibacterial, breathable, and washable, though is not waterproof unless coated with a polymer.
[012] The kit may also include D clips etc., made from the same recycle material to ensure a congruent end of life disposal, and may also include adjustable straps to accommodate preference and different modes of transport e.g. crossbody for cyclists.
[013] Another aspect of the present disclosure includes a reusable packaging container, specifically designed for storing dry ambient food produce such as rice, lentils, dried fruit, nuts, and ground coffee. The body of the container, made from flexible materials such as biomass and recycled plastic, includes a fold halfway along its length and a twisting configuration. This design enables it to be compressed lengthwise, thus forming a compact, flat shape for ease of transportation and storage. Furthermore, a screw-on lid with an opening and a one-way valve allows air to escape but prevents it from entering the container body. This unique arrangement enables vacuum packing of foodstuffs within the container as it is compressed, thus preserving the freshness and longevity of the food produce without the need for a separate air extraction pump. The curved body of the container facilitates easy cleaning and hygiene maintenance, while its shape aids in effective stacking and transportation. The body of the container may be made from a biomass and recycled polymer flexible material.
[014] Additional components of the kit may include at least one reusable bread bag made from a breathable material, a reusable waterproof bag with a roll-down top and a Velcro strip for sealing at a desired height, and a reusable veg net bag. These components are specially designed for specific types of produce and items, thus maximizing the effectiveness of the kit and providing a comprehensive solution for various grocery shopping needs. The reuse bread bag and reuse veg net may be constructed from hemp, with a hemp draw string. Anti-bacterial &breathable.
[015] The present invention, therefore, provides a reusable grocery bag kit that not only facilitates more sustainable and organized shopping practices, but also enhances the freshness and longevity of food produce, thereby reducing waste and promoting overall environmental sustainability.
