Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a roofing system for use in the construction of a roof structure onto a building and a method of assembling the roof structure onto a building. In the construction of modern buildings, for example domestic homes, it has become increasingly desirable to increase the energy efficiency of buildings as well as to decarbonise these new buildings. One such example which exemplifies these desires is the Future Homes Standard, which is set to come into effect in England in 2025, wherein homes built in compliance with the standards set are expected to lead to a reduction in total carbon dioxide emissions by 75-80% in comparison to homes built to previous building standards. To meet this reduction, changes in Part L of the Building Regulations have been recently implemented to lay out the groundwork towards achieving the targets set by the Future Homes Standard. Of note, the development and adoption of low-carbon technologies such as for heating and power generation technologies in buildings, for example solar photovoltaics and heat recovery units, were identified as a means towards achieving the goals of the Future Homes Standard. Concurrent to these trends there has been an increasing demand for prefabricated building structures such as wall panels and roof structures. There are a number of benefits to the prefabrication of building structures, including a reduction of costs of labour resulting from a reduction in building time and a reduction in the number of possible mistakes and setbacks. Essentially, prefabricated structures can be assembled in facilities better suited to their assembly than a construction site, resulting in improved efficiency. The new technologies enabling constructors to meet the goals of the Future Homes Standard for instance may have complex architecture of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) components which must be integrated into the home, and as such it is convenient to house them in a utility cupboard, in particular in a prefabricated utility cupboard (PUC) that can either be constructed and installed with MEP components off-site and transported and installed to a building as a modular system or constructed and installed in the building on-site, in either case decreasing construction time and complexity on site. The PUC can be constructed with a simplified input / output architecture to serve all the MEP components therein and integrated within the MEP architecture of the building as one single, modular unit. However, these PUCs may also have significant physical footprint in the building thereby resulting in a reduction of useable storage space in the living spaces for occupiers of newly built homes, for example for clothing and other objects that are frequently accessed by the residential occupants of a building. Accordingly, there is a need to provide a solution which enables housing of this equipment whilst also maximising the easily accessible storage space located within the living space of a home. It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the problems outlined above, in particular to minimise the physical footprint of a prefabricated utility cupboard in the living space of a building. Another object of the present invention is to provide a roofing system configured to house at least one piece of equipment for providing functionality to a building, thereby obviating or mitigating the use of storage space within the living space of a building for storage of the at least one piece of equipment for providing functionality to a building. Another object of the present invention is to provide a roofing system that is configured to support at least one piece of equipment for providing functionality to a building and / or the equipment and personnel required to install the at least one piece of equipment for providing functionality to the building. Another object of the present invention is to provide a roofing system of modular design that is configured to be easily and rapidly assembled in an integrated manner with the other components of the roofing system. Another object of the present invention is to provide a roofing system that is configured to provide easy access for personnel to install and / or maintain the at least one piece of equipment for providing functionality to a building. According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a roofing system for forming a roof structure, the roofing system comprising a means for forming at least one roof structure housing, wherein the at least one roof structure housing is configured to form at least part of the roof structure, wherein the roof structure housing is suitable for housing at least one piece of equipment for providing functionality to a building, the roofing system having a structural support means for supporting the roofing system between two opposite structural supports of the building. Ideally, the roofing system having its own structural support means for supporting the roofing system between two opposite structural supports of the building. Preferably, the two opposite structural supports of the building being two opposite walls. Ideally, the roof structure housing has means for protecting the at least one piece of equipment from weather conditions whilst the roof structure remains uncovered. Advantageously, the roof structure housing provides protection to the at least one piece of equipment. Further advantageously, housing the equipment in the roof structure housing ensures that the equipment for providing functionality to a building does not become damaged. The equipment for providing functionality to a building can for example be mechanical, electrical or plumbing (MEP) equipment. Further advantageously, providing a roof structure housing in the roof structure provides a space for housing at least one piece of equipment for providing functionality to a building such as utility equipment (comprising mechanical, electrical or plumbing equipment) away from the main rooms of the building where space may be more valuable to the occupiers / residents of the building. In certain buildings, the loss of space for prefabricated utility cupboards can be anything from 10 ft2 to 35 ft2 and so this can be a significant loss of storage space for occupants of dwellings, which often do not have a garage of further additional outdoor storage space.
