Abstract
Description
Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a downlight, and in particular to a light-emitting diode (LED) down light. Background of the Invention Different types of luminaires are known. A lighting fixture may be designed with a view to use in a particular application; for example, the design of a lighting fixture intended to be used in a residential environment may have a greater emphasis on features of aesthetic appearance while the design of a lighting fixture intended to be used in an industrial environment may have a greater emphasis on performance characteristics. Light-emitting diode (LED) lamps are often favoured for exhibiting improved operational efficiency and lifetime when compared to incandescent or fluorescent lamps. LED lights require the use of a LED driver, which regulates the supply of power to the LED light circuit. LED lighting modules are known that are usable in place of a LED light bulb. One type of is known as a LED light module, which generally comprises a LED array mounted on a printed circuit board (PCB) and is designed for connection to a LED driver and then to a power supply. Another type is known as a LED light engine, which generally comprises a LED module operatively connected with a LED driver and is designed for connection to a power supply. A luminaire may be provided with a LED light module or LED light engine that is replaceable, or that features a replaceable LED array, enabling the lifespan of the luminaire to be extended. A downlight is a type of light fixture that is designed to be installed in an aperture within a support surface such as a ceiling. LED downlights are known. The present invention provides improvements relating to a downlight comprising a LED lighting module and to a LED lighting module for a downlight Summary of the Invention A downlight comprises a LED lighting module, a housing, and a reflector, and further comprises one or both of: the downlight comprising a first two-part coupling arrangement for releasably securing the LED lighting module to the housing, and a second two-part coupling arrangement for releasably securing the LED lighting module to the reflector; the LED lighting module comprising a watertight enclosure assembly that comprises a first enclosure part, a second enclosure part releasably coupled to the first enclosure part and a sealing ring disposed between the first and the second enclosure parts. A LED lighting module for use in the downlight comprises one or both of: one part of a first two-part coupling arrangement for releasably securing the LED lighting module with a housing of the downlight that is provided with the other part of the first two-part coupling arrangement, and one part of a second two-part coupling arrangement for releasably securing the LED lighting module with a fixing ring of the other part of the second two-part coupling arrangement; a watertight enclosure assembly that comprises a first enclosure part, a second enclosure part, and a sealing ring, the first enclosure part and the second enclosure part releasably connectable with the sealing ring disposed therebetween. According to a first aspect there is provided a downlight, comprising: a LED lighting module, a housing, and a reflector; further comprising: a first two-part coupling arrangement for releasably securing the LED lighting module to the housing, and a second two-part coupling arrangement for releasably securing the LED lighting module to the reflector. According to a second aspect there is provided a downlight, comprising: a LED lighting module, a housing, and a reflector; in which the LED lighting module comprises a watertight enclosure assembly, the watertight enclosure assembly comprising a first enclosure part, a second enclosure part releasably coupled to the first enclosure part and a sealing ring disposed between the first and the second enclosure parts. According to a third aspect there is provided a downlight according to the first aspect and the second aspect. In a preferred embodiment, the downlight is assemblable using only mechanical engagement of components and incorporates both water- and fire- resistance. In an embodiment according to at least the first aspect, the LED lighting module comprises a first part of the first two-part coupling arrangement and the housing comprises the second part of the first two-part coupling arrangement. In an example, the first part of the first two-part coupling arrangement comprises a plurality of fixing projections, each having a shank portion and a head portion, and the second part of the first two-part coupling arrangement comprises a plurality of fixing apertures, each having a first portion and a second portion, the second portion extending in a first circumferential direction from the first portion, the first portion shaped to allow the passage of the head portion of one of the plurality of fixing projections therethrough and the second portion shaped to prevent the passage of said head portion of said one of the plurality of fixing devices therethrough. In an example, the first portion is a generally round portion and said second portion is a generally linear portion. In an example, the plurality of fixing projections comprises a number N of fixing projections spaced equidistantly about a virtual circumference of the LED lighting module, and the plurality of fixing apertures comprises the same number N of fixing apertures spaced equidistantly about a virtual circumference of the housing. In an example, the number N is 3. In an example, the first part of the second two-part coupling arrangement comprises at least one first fixing member of the LED lighting module, and the second part of the second two-part coupling comprises a fixing ring having at least one second fixing member for releasably engaging the at least one first fixing member of the LED lighting module, and the fixing ring is releasably securable to the LED lighting module with a portion of the reflector disposed therebetween. In an example, the reflector and the fixing ring are aesthetically complementary. In an embodiment according to at least the second aspect, the first enclosure part of the water-resistant enclosure assembly of the LED lighting module incorporates a heat sink and the second enclosure part comprises a light diffuser. In an example, the plurality of fixing projections of the first part of the first two-part coupling arrangement extend from the first enclosure part of the water-resistant enclosure assembly of the LED lighting module. In an example, the reflector is a faceted reflector. In an embodiment, the housing is provided with mounting clips for use in installing the downlight within an aperture of a support surface. In an example, the mounting clips are spring-loaded mounting clips. In an embodiment, the LED lighting module is a LED light engine. In an embodiment, the downlight further comprises a front bezel, the front bezel releasably securable to an annular rim of the housing. In an embodiment, the downlight is fire rated. According to a fourth aspect there is provided a LED lighting module for use in a downlight according to at least the first aspect, the LED lighting module comprising: one part of a first two-part coupling arrangement for releasably securing the LED lighting module with a housing of the downlight that is provided with the other part of said first two-part coupling arrangement, and one part of a second two-part coupling arrangement for releasably securing the LED lighting module with a fixing ring of the other part of the second two-part coupling arrangement. According to a fifth aspect there is provided a LED lighting module for use in a downlight according to at least the second aspect, the LED lighting module comprising: a watertight enclosure assembly, the watertight enclosure assembly comprising a first enclosure part, a second enclosure part, and a sealing ring, the first enclosure part and the second enclosure part releasably connectable with the sealing ring disposed therebetween. Further particular and preferred aspects of the invention are set out in the accompanying dependent claims. It is to be understood that embodiments and examples can be provided in many alternate forms and the invention should not be construed as limited to the embodiments and examples set forth herein but by the scope of the appended claims. Unless otherwise defined, all terms (including technical and scientific terms) used herein are to be interpreted as is customary in the art. In addition, features referred to herein in the singular can number one or more, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. Similarly, the terms “comprises”, “comprising”, “includes”, “including”, “has” and / or “having” when used herein, specify the presence of the stated feature or features and do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. In the following description, all orientational terms, such as upper, lower, radially and axially, are used in relation to the drawings and should not be interpreted as limiting on the invention, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. The drawings are not necessarily drawn to scale, and in some instances the drawings may have been exaggerated or simplified for illustrative purposes only. The present invention provides a downlight comprising a LED lighting module. The present invention provides a LED lighting module for a downlight. A downlight 101, according to a specific embodiment, is shown in Figures I to 8. The downlight 101 is a LED downlight having a generally circular shape. It is to be appreciated however that the present invention is not limited to a LED downlight having this shape. The downlight 101 comprises a LED lighting module 102, a housing 103 and a reflector 104. The LED lighting module 102 may be a LED light module or a LED light engine. In this specific illustrated example, the LED lighting module 102 is a LED light engine. Preferably, and according to the specific illustrated embodiment, the downlight 101 comprises a first two-part coupling arrangement, indicated generally at 801 in Figure 8, for releasably securing the LED lighting module 102 to the housing 103, and a second two-part coupling arrangement, indicated generally at 802 in Figure 8, for releasably securing the LED lighting module 102 to the reflector 104. Preferably, and according to the specific illustrated embodiment, the LED lighting module 102 comprises a watertight enclosure assembly, indicated generally at 803 in Figure 8. Preferably, and according to the specific illustrated embodiment, the downlight 101 is fully assemblable mechanically. In other words, the assembly of the downlight 101 involves only mechanical connections between components. Hence, the downlight 101 can be assembled without the use of adhesive. Preferably, and according to the specific illustrated embodiment, the downlight 101 is installable within an aperture of a support surface (not shown), such as a ceiling, using a mechanical securing arrangement. According to the specific illustrated embodiment, the housing 103 is provided with mounting clips 105, 106 for use in installing the downlight 101 within an aperture of a support surface. According to the specific illustrated example, the mounting clips 105, 106 are spring-loaded mounting clips that are located exteriorly of the housing 103 and are biased towards a downward and outward position, as shown in the Figures, and manually pivotable upwardly and inwardly to facilitate insertion of the mounting clips 105, 106 through an aperture of a support surface within which the downlight 101 is to be installed, from one side of the support surface to the other, and thereafter releasable to move downwardly and outwardly into contact with the support surface to retain the housing 103, and in turn the downlight 101, in a position within the aperture of the support surface. In the specific illustrated embodiment, a first part, indicated generally at 401 in Figure 4, of the first two-part coupling arrangement 801 is comprised by the LED lighting module 102 and a second part, indicated generally at 402 in Figure 4, of the first two-part coupling arrangement 801 is comprised by the housing 103. According to the specific illustrated example, the first part 401 of the first two-part coupling arrangement 801 comprises a plurality of fixing projections, such as fixing projection 403, and the second part 402 of the first two-part coupling arrangement 801 comprises a plurality of fixing apertures, such as fixing aperture 404. Each fixing projection 403 comprises a shank portion 405 and a head portion 406. Each fixing aperture 404 comprises a first portion 407 and a second portion 408, the second portion 408 extending in a first circumferential direction, indicated by arrow 409, from the first portion 407, around a central axis CA of the housing 103. The first portion 407 is shaped to allow the passage of the head portion 406 of fixing projection 403 therethrough and the second portion 408 is shaped to prevent the passage of the head portion 406 of fixing projection 403 therethrough. Each of the first portion 407 and the second portion 408 of the fixing aperture 404 may have any suitable shape. According to the shown example, the first portion 407 has a shape that is generally circular and the second portion 408 has a shape that is generally linear, and therefore has a substantially key-hole overall shape. According to the specific illustrated embodiment, the LED lighting module 102 comprises a number N of fixing projections 403 spaced equidistantly about a virtual circumference 410 of the LED lighting module 102, and the housing 103 defines the same number N of fixing apertures 404 spaced equidistantly about a virtual circumference 41 I of the housing 103. According to the specific illustrated example, the number N is 3, but may be any suitable alternative number. The LED lighting module 102 is securable to the housing 103 by a method of assembly that comprises the steps of (i) aligning the head portions 406 of the fixing projections 403 of the LED lighting module 102 with the first portions 407 of the fixing apertures 404 of the housing 103, (ii) effecting movement of the head portions 406 of the fixing projections 403 of the LED lighting module 102 through the first portions 407 of the fixing apertures 404 of the housing 103, in an assembly direction, and (iii) effecting rotation of the LED lighting module 102 relative to the housing 103 in a second circumferential direction, indicated by arrow 412, the second circumferential direction 412 opposite the first circumferential direction 409, to align the head portions 406 of the fixing projections 403 of the LED lighting module 102 with the second portions 408 of the fixing apertures 404 of the housing 103 to prevent withdrawal of the fixing projections 403 of the LED lighting module 102 from the fixing apertures 404 of the housing 103, to maintain the LED lighting module 102 and the housing 103 in an engaged condition. The LED lighting module 102 is subsequently releasable from the housing 103 by a method of removal that comprises the steps of (i) effecting rotation of the LED lighting module 102 relative to the housing 103 in the first circumferential direction 409, to again align the head portions 406 of the fixing projections 403 of the LED lighting module 102 with the first portions 407 of the fixing apertures 404 of the housing 103 and (ii) effecting movement of the head portions 406 of the fixing projections 403 of the LED lighting module 102 back through the first portions 407 of the fixing apertures 404 of the housing 103, in a disassembly direction, opposite the assembly direction. According to the specific illustrated embodiment, the LED lighting module 102 comprises a central connector element, indicated at 601 in Figure 6, which is configured to be located within a central aperture, indicated at 602 in Figure 6, of the housing 103. The central connector element 601 of the LED lighting module 102 provides cabling access to electrical components of the LED lighting module 102. According to the specific illustrated embodiment, the LED lighting module 102 comprises an enclosure assembly, indicated at 301 in Figure 3. The enclosure assembly 301 comprises a first enclosure part 302, and a second enclosure part 303 that is releasably connectable to the first enclosure part 302. When connected, the first and second enclosure parts 302, 303 define an internal chamber, indicated at 804 in Figure 8, for housing at least an LED array, such as the LED array 304 shown in Figure 4. According to the specific illustrated example, the fixing projections 403 of the first part 401 of the first two-part coupling arrangement 801 extend from the first enclosure part 302. Preferably, and in the specific illustrated embodiment, the enclosure assembly 301 further comprises a sealing ring 305. Advantageously, the first and second enclosure parts 302, 303 are releasably connectable, with the sealing ring 305 disposed therebetween, to render the enclosure assembly 301 watertight. The sealing ring 305 may comprise any suitable material or combination of materials. The sealing ring 305 may have any suitable shape, dimensions, and cross-sectional profile. According to the specific illustrated example, the first enclosure part 302 of the enclosure assembly 301 of the enclosure assembly of the LED lighting module incorporates a heat sink and the second enclosure part 302 comprises a light diffuser. The light diffuser may be any suitable type. The light diffuser may comprise any suitable material and may have any suitable level of transmittance. According to the specific illustrated example, the first enclosure part 302 is provided with an internal annular groove 306 for holding the sealing ring 305. According to the specific illustrated example, a first part, indicated at 307 in Figure 3, of the second two-part coupling arrangement 802 comprises at least one first fixing member, such as fixing member 308, of the LED lighting module 102, and a second part, indicated at 309 in Figure 3, of the second two-part coupling 802 comprises a fixing ring having a least one second fixing member, such as fixing member 310, for releasably engaging the at least one first fixing member 308 of the LED lighting module 102. According to the specific illustrated embodiment, the first and second parts 307, 309 are designed to clip together. According to the specific illustrated example, the fixing ring 309 is provided with at least one opening, such as opening 501 shown in Figure 5, for receiving a suitable tool (not shown), for example a screwdriver, to effect unclipping of the fixing ring 309. According to the specific illustrated embodiment, and as can be seen in Figure 8, the first and second parts 307, 309 of the second two-part coupling arrangement 802 are designed to accommodate a portion of the reflector 104 therebetween. According to the specific illustrated example, an upper end 31 I of the reflector 104 comprises an annular flange 312 and the fixing ring 309 is releasably securable to the LED lighting module 102 with the annular flange 3 12 of the reflector 104 disposed therebetween. Thus, the reflector 104 is securable to the LED lighting module 102 through being held between the fixing ring 309 and the LED lighting module 102. According to the specific illustrated example, a lower end 3 13 of the reflector 104 comprises an annular rim 314. According to the specific illustrated example also, a lower end 315 of the housing 103 comprises an annular rim 316. As shown, the annular rim 316 has an inner seating region 317 that is recessed from an outer surrounding region 3 18. The reflector 104 is locatable inside the housing 103 such that the annular rim 313 of the reflector 104 is received within the inner seating region 317 of the annular rim 316 of the housing 103. According to the specific illustrated embodiment, the downlight 101 comprises a front bezel 315 that is releasably securable to the annular rim 316 of the housing 103. In typical use of the downlight 101, the front bezel 3 15 will be visible on the same side of the support surface from which light is emitted by the LED lighting module 102. The front bezel 3 15 may be used to cover a peripheral region of the downlight 101 and to cover the edge of the aperture of the support surface within which the downlight 101 is installed, for both practical and decorative reasons. The front bezel 315 may have any desired aesthetic characteristics. For example, the front bezel may have any desired shape, surface profile, colour and / or glossiness. The front bezel 3 15 may comprise any suitable material or combination of materials. According to the specific illustrated embodiment, the reflector 104 is a faceted reflector. The reflector 104 may have any desired colour. For example, the reflector 104 may be white, silver or gold. A front bezel 315 may be selected to aesthetically complement the reflector 104. The reflector may comprise any suitable material or materials, and may have any suitable dimensions, shape and surface pattern. It is to be appreciated therefore that the present invention is not limited to the specific reflector shown in the Figures. According to the specific illustrated embodiment, the fixing ring 309 can be seen inside the reflector 104. In other words, the fixing ring 309 is visible within the reflector 104, by looking through the lower end 3 13 of the reflector 104. Therefore, the fixing ring 309, while serving a functional purpose, may also advantageously be used for visual effect. A fixing ring 309 may be selected to aesthetically complement the reflector 104. The fixing ring 309 may comprise any suitable material or combination of materials. In an example, the reflector 104 and the fixing ring 309 are aesthetically complementary. In an example, the reflector 104, the fixing ring 309 and the front bezel 315 are aesthetically complementary. The downlight 101 may have any suitable dimensions and may comprise any material or combination of materials. Preferably, and according to the specific illustrated embodiment, the downlight 101 is a fire rated downlight. The downlight 101 may have been 30-, 60- or 90-minute fire rated. In a specific example, the housing 103 comprises steel, and the fixing projections 403 of the first two-part coupling arrangement for releasably securing the LED lighting module 102 and the housing 103 comprise stainless steel. The central aperture 602 of the housing 103 is substantially blocked by the central connector element 601 of the LED lighting module 102 and each fixing aperture 404 is substantially blocked by a fixing projection 403 and surrounding material of the LED lighting module 102. Thus, openings through the housing 103 are substantially filled, minimising the presence of gaps through which flames can penetrate. According to the specific illustrated embodiment, the downlight 101 incorporates a watertight LED lighting module 102. The present invention therefore provides a downlight that is assemblable using only mechanical engagement of components and that incorporates water- and fire- resistance. Although illustrative embodiments and examples of the invention have been disclosed in detail herein, with reference to the accompanying drawings, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise embodiment and examples shown and / or described and that various changes and modifications can be effected therein by one skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Claims
I. A downlight, comprising:a LED lighting module,a housing, anda reflector; further comprising:a first two-part coupling arrangement for releasably securing the LED lighting module to the housing, anda second two-part coupling arrangement for releasably securing the LED lighting module to the reflector.
2. A downlight, comprising:a LED lighting module,a housing, anda reflector; in whichthe LED lighting module comprises a watertight enclosure assembly, the watertight enclosure assembly comprising a first enclosure part, a second enclosure part releasably coupled to the first enclosure part and a sealing ring disposed between the first and the second enclosure parts.
3. A downlight as claimed in claims I and 2.
4. A downlight as claimed in claim I or claim 3, wherein the LED lighting module comprises a first part of the first two-part coupling arrangement and the housing comprises the second part of the first two-part coupling arrangement.
5. A downlight as claimed in claim 4, wherein:said first part of the first two-part coupling arrangement comprises a plurality of fixing projections, each having a shank portion and a head portion, andsaid second part of the first two-part coupling arrangement comprises a plurality of fixing apertures, each having a first portion and a second portion, the second portion extending in a first circumferential direction from the first portion, the first portion shaped to allow the passage of the head portion of one of the plurality of fixing projections therethrough and thesecond portion shaped to prevent the passage of said head portion of said one of the plurality of fixing devices therethrough.
6. A downlight as claimed in claim 5, wherein said first portion is a generally round portion and said second portion is a generally linear portion.
7. A downlight as claimed in claim 5 or claim 6, wherein:said plurality of fixing projections comprises a number N of fixing projections spaced equidistantly about a virtual circumference of the LED lighting module, andsaid plurality of fixing apertures comprises the same number N of fixing apertures spaced equidistantly about a virtual circumference of the housing.
8. A downlight as claimed in claim 7, wherein said number N is 3.
9. A downlight as claimed in claim I or any one of claims 3 to 8, wherein:said first part of the second two-part coupling arrangement comprises at least one first fixing member of the LED lighting module, andsaid second part of the second two-part coupling comprises a fixing ring having at least one second fixing member for releasably engaging the at least one first fixing member of the LED lighting module, andthe fixing ring is releasably securable to the LED lighting module with a portion of the reflector disposed therebetween.
10. A downlight as claimed in claim 10, wherein the reflector and the fixing ring are aesthetically complementary.I I. A downlight as claimed in claim 2 or claim 3 or any one of claims 4 to 10 when dependent upon claim 3, wherein the first enclosure part of the water-resistant enclosure assembly of the LED lighting module incorporates a heat sink and the second enclosure part comprises a light diffuser.I 2. A downlight as claimed in claims 3, 5 and 10, wherein the plurality of fixing projections of said first part of the first two-part coupling arrangement extend from said first enclosure part of the water-resistant enclosure assembly of the LED lighting module.
13. A downlight as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the reflector is a faceted reflector.
14. A downlight as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the housing is provided with mounting clips for use in installing the down light within an aperture of a support surface.
15. A downlight as claimed in claim 14, wherein the mounting clips are spring-loaded mounting clips.
16. A downlight as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the LED lighting module is a LED light engine.I 7. A downlight as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a front bezel, the front bezel releasably securable to an annular rim of the housing.
18. A downlight as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the downlight is fire rated.
19. A LED lighting module for use in the downlight of claim I or any one of claims 3 to 10 or any one of claims 13 to 18 when dependent on claim I, the LED lighting module comprising:one part of a first two-part coupling arrangement for releasably securing the LED lighting module with a housing of the downlight that is provided with the other part of said first two-part coupling arrangement, andone part of a second two-part coupling arrangement for releasably securing the LED lighting module with a fixing ring of the other part of the second two-part coupling arrangement.
