Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention relates to a cylinder head gasket, and more particularly to a cylinder head gasket capable of suppressing the intrusion of combustion gas into a water hole. [Background technology]

[0002] Conventionally, a cylinder head gasket has been known which is constructed by stacking a number of gasket substrates, with a number of combustion chamber holes, water holes and bolt holes formed at required positions of the gasket substrates, and in which a rubber coating is applied to both the front and back surfaces of each gasket substrate (for example, Patent Document 1). [0003] [Patent Document 1] Japanese Utility Model Application Publication No. 4-71865 Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

[0004] 8(a) and 8(b) show the essential parts of the conventional cylinder head gasket 1 and its cross section in a simplified form. This conventional cylinder head gasket 1 is constructed by laminating a plurality of gasket substrates 5, 6 and an intermediate plate 7 arranged between them. A plurality of combustion chamber holes 1A (5A-7A) are formed at required positions, and full beads 5B, 6B are formed on the gasket substrates 5, 6 surrounding the combustion chamber holes 5A, 6A. A plurality of bolt holes 8 and water holes 9 are also formed at required positions, and half beads 5C, 6C are formed on both gasket substrates 5, 6 surrounding the individual water holes 9. Furthermore, rubber coatings 12, 13 are applied to the front and back surfaces of both gasket substrates 5, 6. In this conventional cylinder gasket 1, the cylinder head gasket 1 is tightly fastened between the cylinder block and the cylinder head by bolts attached to the bolt holes 8 at a position outside the water holes 9. Therefore, if combustion gas G leaks outward beyond the full beads 5B, 6B surrounding the combustion chamber hole 1A (5A, 6A), the combustion gas G is unlikely to escape to the outside of the cylinder head gasket 1 from between the upper and lower gasket substrates 5, 6 and between their mating materials. Therefore, there was a risk that the combustion gas G leaking outward beyond the full beads 5B, 6B would enter the water holes 9 and cause the engine to overheat. In addition, although not shown in the drawings, in conventional cylinder head gaskets that have a configuration in which, rather than surrounding individual water holes with half beads 5C (6C) as in Figure 8(a), a half bead is provided that surrounds all of the multiple water holes endlessly from the outside. As mentioned above, if the combustion gas G leaks outward beyond the full bead 5B (6B), the combustion gas G is likely to enter the water holes 9, making it prone to overheating. [Means for solving the problem]

[0005] In view of the above circumstances, the present invention provides a cylinder head gasket comprising at least one gasket base plate having a coating applied to at least one of the front and back surfaces, and a plurality of combustion chamber holes, water holes and bolt holes formed at predetermined positions in the gasket base plate, and further comprising beads formed on the gasket base plate so as to surround each of the combustion chamber holes, a peeled portion is formed by peeling the coating formed on the gasket base plate at a position between the water hole and the bolt hole and extending from an outer position adjacent to the bead to an outer edge of the cylinder head gasket; the peeling portion includes an arc portion located adjacent to and outward from the bead, and a discharge portion located between the water hole and the bolt hole and extending from the arc portion to an outer edge of the cylinder head gasket, The gasket assembly is configured by stacking a first gasket substrate located on the upper side, a second gasket substrate located on the lower side, and an intermediate plate provided between the first gasket substrate and the second gasket substrate, a plurality of combustion chamber holes, water holes and bolt holes are provided at predetermined positions of the intermediate plate so as to correspond to the combustion chamber holes, water holes and bolt holes of the first gasket base plate and the second gasket base plate; A coating is formed on both the front and back surfaces of the first gasket substrate and the second gasket substrate, and the release portion is formed on both the front and back surfaces of the first gasket substrate and the second gasket substrate, The peeled portion is formed in an approximately K-shape by the arc portion and a bifurcated discharge portion, and the intermediate plate has an approximately K-shaped cutout portion formed at a position overlapping with the peeled portion, the cutout portion being composed of an arc portion that is adjacent to the outer side of the bead, and a bifurcated discharge portion that is located between the water hole and the bolt hole and extends from the arc portion to the outer edge of the cylinder head gasket, and the peeled portion and the discharge portion in the cutout portion of the intermediate plate are located between the water hole and the bolt hole. Effect of the Invention

[0006] According to this configuration, since the separation portion is formed and the cutout portion is formed in the intermediate plate, a small gap is maintained between the separation portion and the mating material, and if the combustion gas leaks beyond the bead to the outside, it is discharged to the outside of the cylinder head through the gap and the cutout portion of the intermediate plate. Therefore, the combustion gas is prevented from entering the water hole, and overheating caused by the combustion gas entering the water hole can be effectively prevented. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0008] The present invention will now be described with reference to the illustrated embodiment. In Figs. 1 to 3, reference numeral 1 denotes a cylinder head gasket. This cylinder head gasket 1 is sandwiched between a cylinder head 2 and a cylinder block 3 to maintain a seal therebetween. The cylinder head gasket 1 comprises a first gasket base plate 5 located on the upper side and in contact with the joint surface 2A of the cylinder head 2, a second gasket base plate 6 located on the lower side and in contact with the joint surface 3A of the cylinder block 3, and an intermediate plate 7 arranged between these two gasket base plates 5, 6, which are stacked together. The two gasket base plates 5, 6 and the intermediate plate 7 that constitute the cylinder head gasket 1 are connected together at required locations when stacked together. The first gasket base plate 5, the second gasket base plate 6 and the intermediate plate 7 are formed in the same rectangular shape, and together they have a plurality of combustion chamber holes 1A (5A-7A) drilled therein to match the positions of a plurality of cylinder bores on the cylinder block 3. The inner diameters of these four combustion chamber holes 1A (5A-7A) are set to be approximately the same as the inner diameters of the cylinder bores. Furthermore, eight bolt holes 8 for inserting fastening bolts and sixteen water holes 9 for circulating cooling water are drilled at required positions in both gasket base plates 5, 6 and the intermediate plate 7, as well as ten main bolt holes 10 for inserting the fastening bolts. The combustion chamber holes 1A are formed adjacent to each other at equal intervals along the longitudinal direction of the cylinder head gasket 1, and bolt holes 8 are formed on both sides of each combustion chamber 1A on an imaginary straight line L that is perpendicular to the center of each combustion chamber 1A and connects the centers of the four combustion chamber holes 1A. Further, a pair of water holes 9 are formed on either side of each of the imaginary straight lines L and on the inner side of the bolt holes 8 (on the combustion chamber 1A side). The bolt holes 8 on one side in the short direction (upper side in FIG. 1) are positioned on a straight line in the longitudinal direction of the cylinder head gasket 1, and the bolt holes 8 on the other side in the short direction (lower side in FIG. 1) are also positioned on a straight line in the longitudinal direction. Similarly, the water holes 9 on one and the other sides in the short direction are positioned on a straight line in the longitudinal direction. Further, the main bolt holes 10 are formed at four positions along the circumference of each combustion chamber hole 1A so as to surround each combustion chamber hole 1A, so that in total, ten main bolt holes 10 are formed. The water holes 9 are formed in protruding portions 1C that bulge outward from the outer edge 1B of the cylinder head gasket 1 (both gasket base plates 5, 6 and the intermediate plate 7). Each pair of water holes 9 is located on the inner side (combustion chamber hole 1A side) of the bolt holes 8. It is not necessary to provide the protruding portions 1C.

[0009] Both gasket substrates 5, 6 are made of SUS301 or SUS304 with the same thickness (e.g., about 0.2 mm), and intermediate plate 7 is made of SUS301 or SUS304 with a thickness of about 0.08 mm. Both gasket substrates 5, 6 and intermediate plate 7 have shapes that match the joining surfaces 2A, 3A of cylinder head 2 and cylinder block 3, respectively, and have the same plate thickness over their entire areas. Full beads 5B, 6B that endlessly surround the combustion chamber holes 1A (5A, 6A) are formed on both gasket base plates 5, 6. In contrast, the entire area of the intermediate plate 7 is formed flat. The full bead 5B of the first gasket base plate 5 bulges downward toward the cylinder block 3, while the full bead 6B of the second gasket base plate 6 bulges upward toward the cylinder head 2. In other words, the upper and lower full beads 5B, 6B are positioned symmetrically across the intermediate plate 7, and are formed at positions where they overlap when viewed in the plan view of FIG. When the completed cylinder head gasket 1 is sandwiched between the cylinder block 3 and the cylinder head 2, the full bead 5B of the first gasket substrate 5 is in close contact with the front surface of the intermediate plate 7, and the full bead 6B of the second gasket substrate 6 is in close contact with the back surface of the intermediate plate 7.

[0010] At the positions of the water holes 9 in both gasket substrates 5, 6, half beads 5C, 6C are formed that surround each water hole 9 in an endless manner, and at the positions of each main bolt hole 10, half beads 5D, 6D are formed that surround each of them in an endless manner. The half beads 5C, 5D of the first gasket base plate 5 have a cross-sectional shape in which the inner edges are recessed toward the intermediate plate 7A side from the outer edges, while the half beads 6C, 6D of the second gasket base plate 6 have a cross-sectional shape in which the inner edges are raised toward the intermediate plate 7A side from the outer edges. The configurations of the full beads 5B (6B) and the half beads 5C (6C), 5D (6D) are conventionally known. In addition, an annular shim plate 11 is welded to the back surface of the intermediate plate 7 so as to surround the combustion chamber hole 7A. The thickness of the shim plate 11 is the same as or thinner than the thickness of the intermediate plate 7. Furthermore, the front (upper surface) and rear (lower surface) of both the gasket substrates 5, 6 are covered with rubber coatings 12, 13 made of fluorine-based, nitrile-based rubber, etc. The thickness of the rubber coatings 12, 13 is about 0.007 to 0.030 mm. In this way, both the front and back surfaces of both gasket substrates 5, 6 are covered with rubber coatings 12, 13, which makes it possible to improve the adhesion and sealing performance between both gasket substrates 5, 6 and the mating materials above and below them.

[0011] In this manner, both the front and back surfaces of both gasket substrates 5, 6 are coated with rubber coatings 12, 13. However, in this embodiment, rather than coating the entire front and back surfaces with rubber coatings 12, 13, the rubber coatings 12, 13 are intentionally peeled off in the areas between the water hole 9 and the adjacent bolt hole 8 to form peeled areas 12A, 13A. That is, the peel-off portions 12A, 13A are formed with the same shape and dimensions at overlapping positions on the front and back surfaces of both gasket substrates 5, 6 in a plan view, and are substantially K-shaped. Peel portions 12A, 13A are formed by an arc portion 12Aa (13Aa) that is located adjacent to and outside full beads 5B, 6B between a pair of water holes 9, 9 and that runs along the circumferential direction, and two linear discharge portions 12Ab (13Ab) that extend from one end side and the other end side of arc portion 12Aa (13Aa) through between water hole 9 and bolt hole 8 to outer edge 1B. The two discharge portions 12Ab (13Ab) are formed between bolt hole 8 and water hole 9 and in the approximate radial direction of combustion chamber hole 1A. In this way, the arc portion 12Aa (13Aa) is located adjacent to the full bead 5B (6B) on the outer side, the inner (combustion chamber side) ends of the two linear discharge portions 12Ab (13Ab) are connected to the arc portion 12Aa (13Aa), and the outer ends of the discharge portions 12Ab (13Ab) are open to the outer edge 1B (i.e., the outside of the cylinder head gasket 1). It is also possible to omit one of the two discharge portions 12Ab (13Ab) and form the peeled portions 12A, 13A as a whole into a substantially T-shape as in second and third embodiments shown in Figs. 4 and 6, which will be described later. As shown in the cross-sectional view of Figure 3, when the completed cylinder head gasket 1 is interposed between the cylinder block 3 and the cylinder head 2 and fastened with bolts in the main bolt hole 10 and the sub bolt hole 8, a small gap 15 is maintained between the peeled-off portions 12A, 13A and the mating materials above and below them between the water hole 9 and the bolt hole 8. In this embodiment, since the gap 15 is maintained between the mating material and the peeled portions 12A and 13A in this manner, when the combustion gas G leaks outward beyond the full bead 5B (6B), the combustion gas G can be discharged to the outside through the gap 15 without penetrating the water hole 9. In other words, the peeled portions 12A and 13A function as a discharge passage for guiding the leaking combustion gas G and discharging it to the outside. As mentioned above, in the conventional cylinder head gasket 1 shown in Figures 8(a) and 8(b), the entire front and back surfaces of the gasket base plates 5, 6, including the area between the water holes 9 and the bolt holes 8, are covered with rubber sheets 12, 13. It has been pointed out that this conventional technology has the problem that combustion gas G is likely to penetrate into the water holes 9.

[0012] As described above, the cylinder head gasket 1 of this embodiment has the peeled portions 12A, 13A where the coatings 12, 13 are intentionally peeled off. In this cylinder head gasket 1, a full bead 5B (6B) is formed surrounding the combustion chamber hole 1A (5A, 7A, 6A) to prevent leakage of the combustion gas G. However, when the cylinder head gasket 1 is installed in a high-horsepower racing engine, for example, the full bead 5B (6B) surrounding the combustion chamber hole 1A may not be able to maintain a complete seal. In that case, there is a risk that the combustion gas G will leak outward beyond the full bead 5B (6B) and enter the water hole 9. In this case, since the cylinder gasket 1 of this embodiment has peeled-off portions 12A, 13A formed on the rubber coatings 12, 13, a small gap 15 is maintained between the peeled-off portions 12A, 13A and the mating material. As a result, the combustion gas G that has leaked beyond the full beads 5B, 6B flows through the gap 15 and is discharged to the outside from the outer edge 1B of the cylinder head gasket 1. Therefore, the combustion gas G that has leaked outward from the full beads 5B, 6B is prevented from penetrating the water holes 9, and the occurrence of overheating due to the combustion gas G penetrating the water holes 9 can be effectively prevented.

[0013] 4 and 5 show a second embodiment of the present invention. In the first embodiment, the release portions 12A and 13A are provided on both the front and back surfaces of the two gasket substrates 5 and 6, but in this second embodiment, the release portion 12A is formed only on the back surface of the first gasket substrate 5, while the release portion 13A is formed only on the front surface of the second gasket substrate 6, and further, the intermediate plate 7 is formed with a substantially T-shaped notch 7E that reaches the outer edge 1B. That is, in this second embodiment, peel-off portion 12A formed on the back surface of first gasket substrate 5 is approximately T-shaped, and peel-off portion 13A formed on the back surface of second gasket substrate 6 is also approximately T-shaped. Furthermore, intermediate plate 7 is formed with approximately T-shaped cutout portion 7E that matches the shapes of peel-off portions 12A, 13A of both gasket substrates 5, 6. Peel-off portions 12A, 13A and cutout portion 7E of intermediate plate 7 are formed to have the same dimensions and shape at positions where they overlap in a plan view. The peel-off portion 12A of the first gasket substrate 5 is located adjacent to the outer side of the full beads 5B, 6B and is composed of an arc portion 12Aa located between both water holes 9 along the circumferential direction, and a linear discharge portion 12Ab that extends from approximately the center of the arc portion 12Aa, passing between the water holes 9 and the bolt holes 8, and reaching the outer edge 1B. The peel-off portion 13A of the second gasket substrate 6 is also composed of an arc portion 13Aa and a linear discharge portion 13Ab, similar to the peel-off portion 12A. The cutout portion 7E of the intermediate plate 7 is located on the adjacent outer side of the full beads 5B, 6B and is composed of an arcuate portion 7Ea located between both water holes 9 along the circumferential direction thereof, and a linear discharge portion 7Eb that extends from approximately the center of the arcuate portion 7Ea, passing between one of the water holes 9 and the bolt hole 8, and reaching the outer edge 1B. In other words, the cutout portion 7E of the intermediate plate 7 forms an approximately T-shaped gap 15 between the upper and lower gasket substrates 5, 6. Through holes 5F are formed in the first gasket substrate 5 and the rubber coating 12 at positions corresponding to both ends and the center of the arc portion 12Aa of the peeling portion 12A on the back surface. These three through holes 5F communicate with the cutout portion 7E of the intermediate plate 7. Furthermore, through holes 6F are formed in the second gasket substrate 6 and the rubber coating 13 at positions corresponding to both ends and the center of the arc portion 13Aa of the peeled portion 13A on the upper surface. These three through holes 6F communicate with the cutout portion 7E of the intermediate plate 7. That is, in this second embodiment, the cutout portion 7E of the intermediate plate 7 and the peeled portions 12A, 13A overlapping above and below form a gap 15 that is substantially T-shaped in plan view. The other configurations are the same as those in the first embodiment, and the same member numbers are generally used to refer to corresponding members. In the cylinder head gasket 1 of the second embodiment, when the combustion gas G leaks outwardly beyond the full beads 5B and 6B, it is discharged to the outside from the outer edge 1B of the cylinder head gasket 1 through the gap 15 formed by the cutout portion 7E and the peeled portions 12A and 13A. The combustion gas G leaking outwardly beyond the full bead 5B from between the first gasket substrate 5 and the cylinder head passes through the through hole 5F, and is discharged to the outside through the cutout portion 7E and the gap 15 formed by the peeled portion 12A. The combustion gas G leaking outwardly beyond the full bead 6B from between the second gasket substrate 6 and the cylinder block passes through the through hole 6F, and is discharged to the outside through the cutout portion 7E and the gap 15 formed by the peeled portion 13A. Therefore, it is possible to prevent the combustion gas G that has leaked outward beyond the full beads 5B, 6B from entering the water holes 9. Therefore, even with the configuration of the second embodiment, it is possible to obtain the same functions and effects as those of the first embodiment.

[0014] 6 and 7 show a third embodiment of the present invention. In this third embodiment, the cutout portion 7E of the intermediate plate 7 has the same structure as in the second embodiment, but the structures of the two gasket substrates 5 and 6 are different. That is, a peel-off portion 12A having a substantially T-shape in plan view is formed on the surface (upper surface) of the first gasket substrate 5 at a position overlapping with the cutout portion 7E of the intermediate plate 7, and a half bead 5G is formed on the first gasket substrate 5 along the entire contour of the substantially T-shape of the peel-off portion 12A. As a result, a T-groove 16 having a V-shaped vertical cross section at each portion is formed on the upper surface of the first gasket substrate 5. Note that a full bead may be formed instead of the half bead 5G. Further, a peel-off portion 13A having a substantially T-shape in plan view is formed on the back surface (lower surface) of the second gasket substrate 6 at a position overlapping with the cutout portion 7E of the intermediate plate 7, and a half bead 6G is formed on the back surface of the second gasket substrate 6 along the entire contour of the substantially T-shape of the peel-off portion 13A. As a result, a T-groove 17 having an inverted V-shape in vertical cross section is formed on the lower surface of the second gasket substrate 6. In this third embodiment, no peeled-off portion of the rubber coating 12 is formed on the back surface of the first gasket substrate 5, and no peeled-off portion of the rubber coating is formed on the top surface of the second gasket substrate 6. Furthermore, the through holes 5F and 6F shown in the second embodiment are not formed. The other configurations are the same as those of the first embodiment, and in principle, the same member numbers are used for corresponding members. In the cylinder head gasket 1 of the third embodiment, when the combustion gas G leaks outward beyond the full beads 5B and 6B, it is discharged to the outside from the outer edge 1B of the cylinder head gasket 1 through the gap 15 formed by the notch portion 7E. Also, the combustion gas G leaking outward beyond the full bead 5B from between the first gasket substrate 5 and the cylinder head passes through the T-shaped groove 16 (peeling portion 12A) and is discharged to the outside. Also, the combustion gas G leaking outward beyond the full bead 6B from between the second gasket substrate 6 and the cylinder block passes through the T-shaped groove 17 (peeling portion 13A) and is discharged to the outside. Therefore, the combustion gas G leaking outward beyond the full beads 5B and 6B can be prevented from entering the water hole 9. Even with the configuration of the third embodiment, the same actions and effects as those of the first embodiment can be obtained.

[0015] Instead of the rubber coatings 12 and 13 in the above embodiment, a coating material such as an elastomer material may be used. In addition, in the first embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 3, no cutout portion is provided in the intermediate plate 7A, but in accordance with the second embodiment in Figure 4, in the first embodiment of Figures 1 to 3 above, an approximately K-shaped cutout portion may be formed in the intermediate plate 7 at a position that overlaps with the peel-off portions 12A and 13A. Further, in each of the above embodiments, the cylinder head gasket 1 is configured by stacking a plurality of gasket substrates 5, 6. However, in a cylinder head gasket having only a single gasket substrate, the above-mentioned peel-off portion (12A, 13A) may be provided on at least one of the rubber coatings on the front and back surfaces of the gasket substrate.
