Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for supplying a layer of unused multi-layer tape to a production line for absorbent sanitary articles. [Background technology]

[0002] Absorbent hygiene articles are, for example, feminine sanitary pads, baby diapers, diapers and pads for people suffering from incontinence, etc. In the following description, reference is made to the non-limiting example of feminine sanitary pads.

[0003] Structurally, the feminine sanitary pad comprises a lower layer (i.e., backsheet), an upper layer (i.e., topsheet) overlapping and joined together, and an absorbent core sandwiched between the lower and upper layers. The feminine sanitary pad further comprises two flaps that may be formed by the lower layer and / or by the upper layer. To improve the stability of the pad, the flaps may be folded back when the pad is attached to the undergarment worn by the user.

[0004] One or more adhesives are placed on the bottom layer to secure the pad to the user's undergarments. The adhesives are typically placed in the center and on the flaps of the pad.

[0005] Typically, the adhesive comprises an adhesive layer applied onto an underlayer and a cover sheet (i.e., release paper) that covers a portion of the adhesive layer. The cover sheet is typically made of paper and can be removed to expose the adhesive when the pad is applied. The cover sheet is configured such that the adhesive remains on the underlayer of the pad when the cover sheet is removed.

[0006] The Applicant has observed that in some processes for the manufacture of absorbent sanitary articles, at least some of the above-mentioned layers or sheets can be obtained from multi-layer tapes wound on respective spools, where it is necessary to separate the various layers / sheets of each multi-layer tape unwound from the respective spool in order to supply only one of said layers / sheets (hereinafter referred to as the "layer of interest") to the production line of absorbent sanitary articles.

[0007] Applicant has also observed that in the above-described process, once a spool of multi-layer tape is depleted, new multi-layer tape must be unwound from a new, unused spool in order to continue to supply the target layers to the production line.

[0008] Applicants have realized that it is possible to supply the subject layers of a new multi-layer tape unwound from a new, unused spool by splicing the new multi-layer tape onto the multi-layer tape in use.

[0009] Applicant has also realized that by pulling the two layers of the used multilayer tape apart in divergent directions to separate the two layers of new multilayer tape (hereinafter referred to as the first layer and the second layer), it is possible to join both the first layer of the used multilayer tape and the first layer of the unused multilayer tape, and the second layer of the used multilayer tape and the second layer of the unused multilayer tape, such that the two layers of the unused multilayer tape are also pulled apart in divergent directions, thereby separating them from each other. Summary of the Invention

[0010] Thus, in a first aspect thereof, the present invention relates to a method for supplying a layer of unused multi-layer tape to a production line for absorbent hygienic articles.

[0011] Preferably, there is provided a head free end of said unused multi-layer tape partially unwound from each unused spool.

[0012] Preferably, a tail free end of the multi-layer tape is provided during use.

[0013] Preferably, the first connecting elements are applied onto the first layer of unused multi-layer tape and onto the first layer of used multi-layer tape at said head free end and tail free end.

[0014] Preferably, second connecting elements are applied on the second layer of unused multi-layer tape and on the second layer of used multi-layer tape at said head free end and tail free end.

[0015] Preferably, the first layer of the unused multi-layer tape is tensioned in a first direction by advancing the first layer of the used multi-layer tape and the first connecting element in a first direction.

[0016] Preferably, the second layer of the unused multi-layer tape is tensioned in a second direction by advancing the second layer of the used multi-layer tape and the second connecting element in a second direction.

[0017] Preferably, the second direction diverges from the first direction.

[0018] By attaching the first connecting element and the second connecting element, the first layer of the multi-layer tape in use and the first layer of the unused multi-layer tape are joined together.

[0019] By applying the second connecting element, the second layer of the used multi-layer tape and the second layer of the unused multi-layer tape are joined together.

[0020] By pulling the first layer of the used multilayer tape and the second layer of the used multilayer tape apart in a diverging direction, the unused first layer of the multilayer tape and the unused second layer of the multilayer tape are pulled in a diverging direction, thereby separating the unused first layer of the multilayer tape and the unused second layer of the multilayer tape. In this way, the unused first layer of the multilayer tape is separated from the unused second layer of the multilayer tape, and one of the layers can be fed into a production line for absorbent articles.

[0021] In a second aspect thereof, the present invention relates to an apparatus for supplying a layer of unused multi-layer tape to a production line for absorbent sanitary articles.

[0028] Preferably, said second direction diverges from said first direction.

[0029] The term "tape" is used to denote a body having a length measured along each longitudinal dimension, a width measured along each lateral dimension perpendicular to the longitudinal dimensions, and a thickness measured along each perpendicular dimension perpendicular to the longitudinal and lateral dimensions, the length being at least two orders of magnitude greater than the width and the thickness being at least two orders of magnitude less than the width.

[0030] The term "free end" of a multi-layer tape (unused or in use) is used to denote a longitudinal end of the tape, where the tape has a substantially laterally extending edge.

[0031] The present invention, in both of the above aspects, may have at least one of the preferred features described below, and such features may therefore be present individually or in combination with each other, unless otherwise stated, in both the method of the first aspect of the invention and the apparatus of the second aspect of the invention.

[0032] Preferably, the method of the first aspect of the invention may be carried out by an apparatus according to the second aspect of the invention.

[0033] Preferably, the unused multi-layer tape comprises a first layer and a second layer overlying the first layer.

[0034] Preferably, in use, the multi-layer tape comprises a first layer and a second layer overlying the first layer.

[0035] In a preferred embodiment, such as the embodiment shown in the accompanying drawings, the layer supplied to the production line is a second layer of unused multi-layer tape, in such an embodiment, the second layer of unused multi-layer tape and the second layer of used multi-layer tape comprise a main layer comprising an adhesive base, and the first layer of unused multi-layer tape and the first layer of used multi-layer tape comprise a removable protective layer covering the adhesive base of the main layer.

[0036] In an alternative embodiment not shown in the accompanying drawings, the layer supplied to the production line is a first layer of a virgin multi-layer tape, in such an embodiment the first layer of the virgin multi-layer tape and the first layer of the in-use multi-layer tape comprise a main layer comprising an adhesive base, and the second layer of the virgin multi-layer tape and the second layer of the in-use multi-layer tape comprise a removable protective layer covering the adhesive base of the main layer.

[0037] In a particularly preferred embodiment, the above-mentioned main layer defines a cover sheet provided with an adhesive intended to be applied to an underlying layer of an absorbent hygienic article.

[0038] The Applicant has observed in practice that traditionally, during the manufacture of absorbent sanitary articles, an adhesive base is applied onto the bottom layer or cover sheet of the absorbent sanitary article and then a cover sheet is applied onto the bottom layer of the absorbent sanitary article such that the adhesive base remains sandwiched between the bottom layer of the absorbent sanitary article and the cover sheet.

[0039] In markets more sensitive to environmental issues, legislators and consumers are increasingly favoring biodegradable products.

[0040] Biodegradable sanitary pads are nowadays made to be thrown into the toilet bowl and dissolved in water over a period of days, weeks or months. In these products, the bottom layer is made of a biodegradable fiber material, such as carboxymethylcellulose (CMC).

[0041] Therefore, the applicant considered applying a biodegradable and water-soluble adhesive onto the bottom layer of an absorbent sanitary article.

[0042] Typically, biodegradable adhesives are water-based and in a liquid state at room temperature, as opposed to conventional adhesives which are typically synthetic-based and solid at room temperature.

[0043] The applicant has verified that when a biodegradable adhesive is applied in liquid form onto the bottom layer of a pad made of biodegradable textile material, the adhesive will be absorbed by the textile material and penetrate into the bottom layer, significantly impairing the adhesive performance of the adhesive. Moreover, the adhesive absorbed by the bottom layer runs the risk of hardening the sanitary pad, impairing the comfort of the sanitary pad.

[0044] Applicants have determined that by allowing the biodegradable adhesive to partially dry before applying it onto an underlayer, less of the adhesive will tend to be absorbed by the fibrous material and remain on the surface, maintaining its adhesive performance.

[0045] Accordingly, the Applicant has considered that, prior to application to the lower layer of the absorbent article, an adhesive base can be applied onto the main layer from which the cover sheet is to be separated, and one or more cover sheets, with the partially dried biodegradable adhesive base already applied thereto, can be applied onto the lower layer of the absorbent article, in order to allow the biodegradable adhesive to partially dry before application.

[0046] The applicant has found that it is possible to cover the adhesive base with a removable protective layer in order to transport and store the main layer, on which the adhesive has already been applied, and to obtain a multi-layer tape which can be wound onto a spool without destroying the adhesive base. When applied, the multi-layer tape can be unwound from the spool, the protective layer is removed for disposal, and the main layer is provided with an adhesive base which is fed into an absorbent article production line, where it is cut to obtain a cover sheet which is applied to the underlying layer.

[0047] Preferably, the step of attaching the second connecting element is performed after attaching the first connecting element.

[0048] Preferably, the step of affixing the first connecting element is performed while the head and tail free ends are stationary.

[0049] Preferably, the head free end and the tail free end are moved after applying the first connecting element and before applying the second connecting element.

[0096] In the accompanying drawings, the reference number 100 is used to indicate an apparatus according to the invention. The apparatus 100 is configured to supply a main layer 47 of a multi-layer tape 46 in use and thereafter a main layer 57 of a multi-layer tape 56 that is unused to a production line 200 for absorbent hygienic articles (schematically shown in Figure 1).

[0097] In its preferred embodiment, each main layer 47, 57 comprises a solid main substrate, preferably at least partially biodegradable, for example paper, and an adhesive substrate covering the main substrate.

[0098] In a production line 200, not shown in detail, a number of semi-finished absorbent hygienic articles are processed. The main layer 47 and then the main layer 57 are continuously fed from the device 100 to the production line 200, where they are cut into separate rectangular or square sheets (not shown), each comprising a portion of the main substrate covered with a portion of the adhesive substrate.

[0099] Non-limiting examples of absorbent sanitary articles manufactured on production line 200 include feminine hygiene pads, baby diapers, diapers or pads for people suffering from incontinence, etc. Such absorbent sanitary articles (not shown) comprise upper and lower layers that are joined together and sandwich a core of absorbent material between them. The lower layer is made of a nonwoven material, preferably a biodegradable cellulose-based material.

[0100] In the production line 200, one or more separate sheets obtained by cutting the main layers 47, 57 are applied to each semi-finished absorbent article such that the adhesive of the respective adhesive base adheres to the underlying layer and remains attached to the surface of the underlying layer, the adhesive of each adhesive base being sufficiently viscous to remain on the surface and to soak into the underlying layer in a significant amount.

[0101] Each primary substrate is configured such that a portion of the primary substrate of each separation sheet is weakly held on the bottom layer of the absorbent article by the adhesive of the respective adhesive substrate, performing the function of protecting the adhesive. The absorbent hygienic article is then packaged with each primary substrate still held on the bottom layer, so that each primary substrate can be removed by the end consumer when using the absorbent hygienic article.

[0102] Each main layer 47, 57 is stored, transported and protected in a respective spool 45, 55. Each multi-layer tape 46, 56 is wound on a respective spool 45, 55. In FIG. 1, multi-layer tape 46 (hereinafter referred to as the "in-use multi-layer tape") is adapted to be unwound from spool 45 (hereinafter referred to as the "in-use spool") and proceed along forward path P to supply main layer 47 to production line 200, and multi-layer tape 56 (hereinafter referred to as the "unused multi-layer tape") is adapted to be unwound from spool 55 (hereinafter referred to as the "unused spool") and proceed along forward path P to supply main layer 57 to production line 200 when main layer 47 is depleted.

[0103] Each multi-layer tape 46, 56 includes a respective main layer 47, 57 and a respective protective layer 40, 50 superimposed on the adhesive base of the respective main layer 47, 57 to protect the adhesive base. Each protective layer 40, 50 is configured to be sandwiched between successive overlapping windings of the main layer 47, 57 of the respective multi-layer tape 46, 56 wound on the respective spool 45, 55, thereby preventing the successive windings from sticking together with the adhesive base.

[0104] Each protective layer 40, 50 is made of a material that adheres to the adhesive base and is easily removable while leaving the adhesive on the respective main base. Each protective layer 40, 50 is configured so that it can be removed from its respective main layer 47, 57 without pulling the adhesive from the adhesive base. The protective layers 40, 50 are made, for example, of siliconized paper. The main layer 47 and the overlying protective layer 40 form a multi-layer tape 46, which are wound together on a spool 45. The main layer 57 and the overlying protective layer 50 form a multi-layer tape 56, which are wound together on a spool 55.

[0105] The apparatus 100 comprises a first spool support 101 and a second spool support 102 configured to interchangeably support the spools 45 and 55 .

[0106] 1-3, the second spool support 102 supports an in-use spool 45 from which the in-use multi-layer tape 46 is unwound to supply its main layer 47 to the production line 200. In this operating configuration, the first spool support 101 is available to receive an unused spool 55 so that the unused spool 55 can quickly replace the in-use spool 45 when the in-use spool 45 is depleted.

[0107] 9 and 10, the first spool support 101 supports the in-use spool 45 while the main layer 47 of the in-use multi-layer tape 46 is fed to the production line 200. In the second configuration, the second spool support 102 is operable to receive an unused spool 55 so that the unused spool 55 can quickly replace the in-use spool 45 when the in-use spool 45 is depleted.

[0108] In this manner, the unused multi-layer tape 56 on the unused spool 55 can quickly replace the used multi-layer tape 46 after the used multi-layer tape 46 has been used up.

[0109] The apparatus 100 includes a splicing station 105, shown diagrammatically in FIG. 1, where the unused multi-layer tape 56 is spliced to the used multi-layer tape 46.

[0110] The joining station 105 comprises a first holding device 110. The first holding device 110 is configured to hold the head free end 58 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 partially unwound from the unused spool 55 (FIG. 4). The head free end 58 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 can be positioned on the first holding device 110 manually by an operator. The first holding device 110 is preferably pneumatic and configured to hold the head free end 58 by suction. The first holding device 110 is configured to hold the head free end 58 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 in a first configuration of the device 100. The head free end 58 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 is placed on the first holding device 110 with the main layer 57 placed against the first holding device 110 and the protective layer 50 facing away from the first holding device 110.

[0111] The splicing station 105 further comprises a knife 112 configured to cut the in-use multi-layer tape 46 to obtain a tail free end 48. In the first and second operating configurations of the apparatus 100, when the in-use spool 45 is running out, the in-use multi-layer tape 46 is stopped and held taut and the knife 112 cuts it cleanly across the in-use multi-layer tape 46. The cut portion 49 of the in-use multi-layer tape 46 that remains partially wound on the in-use spool 45 is discarded.

[0112] The joining station 105 further comprises a second holding device 114. The second holding device 114 is configured to hold the tail free end 48 of the multi-layer tape 46 in use. The second holding device 114 is adjacent to the first holding device 110. The second holding device 114 is configured to hold the tail free end 48 of the multi-layer tape 46 in use that has been cut by the knife 112. The second holding device 114 is preferably pneumatic and configured to hold the tail free end 48 by suction. The first holding device 110 and the second holding device 114 have a common lying plane. In the first and second operating configurations, the first holding device 110 and the second holding device 114 hold the multi-layer tape 46 in use while the multi-layer tape 46 in use is cut by the knife 112, after which the second holding device 114 holds the tail free end 48 of the multi-layer tape 46 in use. After cutting, the tail free end 48 of the used multi-layer tape 46 is placed on the second retaining device 114 with the protective layer 40 and main layer 47 arranged as an unused multi-layer tape 56. The main layer 47 is placed against the second retaining device 114 and the protective layer 40 faces away from the second retaining device 114.

The first applicator 116 is configured to hold the first connection element 60 and apply the first connection element 60 at the head free end 58 and the tail free end 48 onto the protective layer 50 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 and the protective layer 40 of the used multi-layer tape 46. The first connection element 60 comprises an adhesive sheet 61 having an adhesive surface and a non-adhesive surface. The first applicator 116 is disposed on the opposite side of the first holding device 110 and the second holding device 114 with respect to the forward path P.

[0114] The first applicator 116 is configured to hold the first connecting element 60 by suction from the non-adhesive side. The first applicator 116 is movable between a rest position distal to the first retaining device 110 and the second retaining device 114 and an application position proximal to and facing the first retaining device 110 and the second retaining device 114. In the respective application positions, the first applicator 116 is configured to press the adhesive side of the first connecting element 60 against the first retaining device 110 and the second retaining device 114.

[0115] In the first configuration of the device 100, the first connecting element 60 is placed on the first applicator 116 in a rest position, preferably manually by an operator. After the knife 112 cuts the multi-layer tape 46 in use, the tail free end 48 of the multi-layer tape 46 in use is held by the second holding device 114 and the head free end 58 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 is held by the first holding device 110, one adjacent to the other and in a common lying plane. The first applicator 116 moves from the rest position toward the first holding device 110 and the second holding device 114 to an application position. In the application position, the adhesive surface of the first connecting element 60 contacts and adheres to both the head free end 58 and the tail free end 48. The first holding device 110 and the second holding device 114 hold the tail free end 48 of the used multi-layer tape 46 and the head free end 58 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 from opposite sides of the first applicator 116 during application of the first connecting element 60. The first applicator 116 is then returned to the rest position.

[0116] In the second configuration of the device 100, the first connection element 60 is pre-applied, preferably manually by an operator, to the head free end 58 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 partially unwound from the unused spool 55 so as to protrude from the head free end 58. Both the first connection element 60 and the head free end 58 are already joined on the first applicator 116 in the rest position, preferably manually positioned by an operator. After the knife 112 cuts the used multi-layer tape 46, the tail free end 48 of the used multi-layer tape 46 is held by the second holding device 114. The first applicator 116 moves from the rest position towards the first holding device 110 and the second holding device 114 to the application position. In the application position, the adhesive surface of the first connection element 60 protruding from the head free end 58 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 contacts and adheres to the tail free end 48 of the used multi-layer tape 46. The first applicator 116 is then returned to the rest position. The first connecting element 60 is applied onto the protective layer 50 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 and the protective layer 40 of the used multi-layer tape 46 to join the protective layers 50, 40 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 and the used multi-layer tape 46. In this manner, the used multi-layer tape 46 and the unused multi-layer tape 56 are joined via their respective protective layers 40, 50.

[0117] The bonding station 105 further comprises a second applicator 118. The second applicator 118 is configured to hold the second connecting element 70 and apply the second connecting element 70 onto the main layer 57 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 and the main layer 47 of the used multi-layer tape 46 at the head free end 58 and the tail free end 48. The second applicator 118 is disposed downstream of the first applicator 116 along the forward path P. The second applicator 118 is further disposed on an opposite side of the first applicator 116 with respect to the forward path P.

[0118] The second connecting element 70 comprises one or more adhesive sheets 71 having an adhesive side and a non-adhesive side. The second applicator 118 is similar to the first applicator 116. The second applicator 118 is configured to hold the second connecting element 70 by suction from the non-adhesive side.

[0119] The bonding station 105 also includes an abutment element 120. The abutment element 120 is disposed opposite the second applicator 118 with respect to the advancement path P. The second applicator 118 is movable between a rest position distal to the abutment element 120 and an application position proximal to and facing the abutment element 120. In the respective application position, the second applicator 118 is configured to press an adhesive surface of the second connecting element 70 against the abutment element 120.

[0120] The bonding station 105 also comprises a sensor 122. The sensor 122 is arranged along the forward path P between the first applicator 116 and the second applicator 118. The sensor 122 is arranged downstream of the first applicator 116 and upstream of the second applicator 118 with respect to the forward path P. The sensor 122 is configured to detect the first connecting element 60. Preferably, the sensor 122 is optical, for example a photocell, and faces the forward path P.

[0121] In both the first and second configurations of the device 100, the second connecting element 70 is, in the rest position, positioned on the second applicator 118, preferably manually by an operator.

[0122] The second connecting element 70 is applied on the second applicator 118 so as not to overlap the first connecting element 60 when applied. For example, as shown in Fig. 9, the first connecting element 60 can comprise a single adhesive sheet 61 positioned on the first applicator 116 so as to be applied to the central portions of the head free end 58 and the tail free end 48, and the second connecting element 70 can comprise two adhesive sheets 71 positioned on the second applicator 118 so as to be applied to either side of the first connecting element 60, on opposing sides of the head free end 58 and the tail free end 48, or vice versa. In a further example not shown, the first connecting element 60 can comprise a single adhesive sheet positioned on the first applicator 116 so as to be affixed to one side of the head free end 58 and the tail free end 48, and the second connecting element 70 can comprise a single sheet positioned on the second applicator 118 so as to be affixed to the opposite side of the head free end 58 and the tail free end 48.

[0123] The second applicator 118 is controlled by the signal received by the sensor 122 to apply the second connection element 70 on the head free end 58 and the tail free end 48 at the first connection element 60. After the first applicator 116 applies the first connection element 60, the used multi-layer tape 46 and the unused multi-layer tape 56 are adapted to advance along a forward path P joined only by the first connection element at the respective head free end 58 and tail free end 48. The second connection element 70 is applied following the first connection element 60 while the head free end 58 and the tail free end 48 are moving along the forward path P. The sensor 122 detects the first connection element 60 and controls the movement of the second applicator 118 from a rest position to an application position. The movement of the second applicator from the time the sensor 122 detects the first connecting element 60 is substantially instantaneous or is delayed by a preset time so that the second connecting element 70 is applied at the first connecting element 60. In the application position, the adhesive surface of the second connecting element 70 contacts and adheres to both the head free end 58 and the tail free end 48. The abutment element 120 holds the tail free end 48 of the used multi-layer tape 46 and the head free end 58 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 on the opposite side of the second applicator 118 during application of the first connecting element 60. The second applicator 118 is then returned to the rest position.

[0124] The second connecting element 70 is applied onto the main layer 57 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 and the main layer 47 of the used multi-layer tape 46 to join the unused multi-layer tape 56 and the main layers 57, 47 of the used multi-layer tape 46. In this way, the second connecting element 70 joins the multi-layer unused tape 56 to the used multi-layer tape 46 on the side opposite the first connecting element 60 and through the respective main layers 57, 47.

[0125] 1 and 7 is located downstream of the bonding station 105 along the forward path P. At the separation station 130, the protective layer 40 is separated from the main layer 47.

[0126] The first tensioning member 150 is disposed at the separation station 130. The first tensioning member 150 is configured to move the protective layer 40 of the used multi-layer tape 46 and the protective layer 50 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 in a first direction D1. In the accompanying drawings, the first tensioning member 150 is represented diagrammatically as a roller.

[0127] The second tensioning member 155 is disposed at the separation station 130. The second tensioning member 155 is configured to move the main layer 47 of the used multi-layer tape 46 and the main layer 57 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 in a second direction D2. The second direction D2 diverges from the first direction D1. In the accompanying drawings, the second tensioning member 155 is represented diagrammatically as a roller.

[0128] After application of the first and second connecting elements 60 and 70, the first and second tensioning members 150 and 155 move the protective layer 40 and main layer 47 of the in-use multi-layer tape 46 in a first direction D1 and a second direction D2, respectively. The tail free end 48 of the in-use multi-layer tape 46, the first connecting element 60, the second connecting element 70, and the head free end 58 of the in-use multi-layer tape 46 are pulled along an advance path P towards the separation station 130.

[0129] When the tail free end 48 of the in-use multi-layer tape 46 arrives at the separation station 130, the first connection element 60 is pulled in a first direction D1 by the protective layer 40 of the in-use multi-layer tape 46. In turn, the first connection element 60 pulls the protective layer 50 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 in the first direction D1. At the same time, the second connection element 70 is pulled in a second direction D2 by the main layer 47 of the in-use multi-layer tape 46. In turn, the second connection element 70 pulls the main layer 57 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 in the second direction D2.

[0130] In the illustrated embodiment, protective layer 40 of the in-use multi-layer tape 46 and protective layer 50 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 are transported to processing device 140 after separation of main layers 47 and 57. Main layer 47 of the in-use multi-layer tape 46 and main layer 57 of the unused multi-layer tape 56 are transported to production line 200 after separation of protective layers 40 and 50.

[0131] In the processing device 140, the protective layer is discarded, eg, destroyed.

[0132] A main layer 57 of unused multi-layer tape 56 is fed to the production line 200. Thus, the unused multi-layer tape 56 becomes the in-use multi-layer tape 46, and the unused spool 55 from which the unused multi-layer tape 56 is unwound becomes the in-use spool 45. When such a spool is running out, the method described above may be repeated. The method is repeated by alternating between the first and second operating configurations of the apparatus 100 described above for each repetition.

[0133] Obviously, those skilled in the art can make many modifications and variations to the above-described invention to meet their specific and unspecified needs, while remaining within the scope of protection defined by the following claims.
