[0011] In the following detailed description, reference is made to the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof, and which illustrate specific embodiments in which the subject matter of the present invention may be practiced. These embodiments are described in sufficient detail to enable those skilled in the art to practice them, and other embodiments may be utilized and structural, logical, and electrical changes may be made without departing from the scope of the subject matter of the present invention. Such embodiments of the subject matter of the present invention may be individually and / or collectively referred to by the term "invention," which is for convenience only and is not intended to limit the scope of the application to one invention or inventive concept if more than one is actually disclosed.
[0012] Accordingly, the following description should not be construed in a limiting sense, and the scope of the subject matter of the present invention is defined by the appended claims and their equivalents.
[0013] In the following embodiments, like components are given like reference numerals.
[0014] Some embodiments implement functions in two or more specifically interconnected hardware modules or devices where related control and data signals communicate with each other via modules or function as part of an application - specific integrated circuit. Thus, the exemplary process flows are applicable to software, firmware, and hardware implementations. Generalized embodiments provide a display device including at least one display unit, where the display unit includes a display screen with user input functionality, a battery, and a wireless transceiver, and a mount unit adapted to receive and hold the at least one display unit. The present invention is suitable for, but not limited to, portable display devices.
[0015] In one example, since the mount is part of a non - portable device such as a desktop computer or a machine control device, one or more displays can be removed from the mount for use or can be used while within or attached to the mount. For example, the mount may be fixed to or be part of a machine such as a computer numerical control machine, and each display may be removable for use in controlling the machine.
[0016] In a fixed configuration, the communication arrangement of the mount unit can be wireless or wired to provide communication to a communication network. The communication network can be part of or remote from the device to which the mount unit is fixed, i.e., the Internet, a WAN, or a LAN. In a fixed configuration, the device can have two or more mounts that are fixed to or incorporated into the device.
[0017] In one example, the mount unit can be portable, handheld, or fixed. The communication arrangement of the mount unit can include a second wireless transceiver for wireless communication, and the first wireless transceiver of the mount unit and the wireless transceiver of the display unit can be of shorter range than the second wireless transceiver.
[0018] Making the mount unit portable or handheld has the advantage that when one or more display units are attached to the mount unit, the display device can be used as a portable or handheld device. When the display device is portable or handheld, the user can carry the display device, and if the user desires to use the display units separately, the user can set aside the mount unit so that the user can use only one or more display units that are smaller in size and lighter in weight than the entire display device.
[0019] When using low output / short range wireless transceivers in each display unit and the mount unit, each display unit needs to be within the range of the mount unit to communicate with the mount unit. The low output / short range communication protocol used can be Bluetooth®. Each display unit can be paired with the mount unit using the Bluetooth protocol for secure communication with the mount unit. The high output / long range wireless communication protocol used by the higher output / longer range transceiver of the mount unit can be WIFI, WiMAX, CDMA, GSM, GPRS, wireless local loop, or WAN. Thus, each display unit can communicate with the mount unit and also communicate with a communication network such as the Internet via the mount unit that uses a low output / short range communication link and a higher output / longer range communication link. In this way, the power requirements and weight of each display unit are reduced.
[0020] In addition to functioning as a proxy or hub for communication between the communication network and each display unit, the mount unit provides physical support for housing each display unit and provides means for recharging the battery within each display unit while each display unit is attached within or on the mount unit. Recharging of the battery within each display unit can be performed by a non-contact or contact arrangement such as an electromagnetic induction charging arrangement. To provide the power required for the portable mount unit, the mount unit can include its own battery to store the power required to enable recharging of the batteries of one or more display units. The battery of the mount unit can be charged using a charging adapter when connection to a main power source is possible.
[0021] In any of the embodiments described above, the transceiver of each display unit may use a higher output / longer range communication wireless communication protocol such as WIFI, WiMAX, CDMA, GSM, GPRS, wireless local loop or WAN.
[0022] In one embodiment, a portable display device having a mount and one or more removable display units can be carried while at least one of the display units is usable while held within the mount unit, and provides the user with a portable or handheld device that can be used as a unit, or enables the use of one or more display units separately from the mount unit by separating the one or more display units from the mount unit. While the user is using one or more display units, the mount unit can be set aside, for example, in the user's handbag, laptop bag or backpack. This reduces the bulk of the devices the user has to carry. Also, when multiple display units are separated from the mount unit, the display area and flexibility available to the user are greater than those available from conventional display devices.
[0023] In one example, by delegating some of the processing requirements to a processor housed within the mount unit, the complexity and processing power of each display unit can be reduced, saving battery and processing requirements and reducing weight and cost. Thus, the processor of the display unit and the processor of the mount unit cooperate or share in the processing of information for display by the display unit. Information for processing, processed information and commands for cooperative processing can be exchanged between the display unit and the mount unit using, for example, a low-power and short-range communication protocol such as Bluetooth®.
[0024] Each display unit may be a rigid display or a flexible display, and in the case of multiple display units, it may be a mixture of flexible display units and rigid display units. The flexible display can be, for example, a flexible LCD or an OLED display. When the display unit is flexible, the mount unit can provide a rigid or semi-rigid support platform for housing when the display unit is not in use. Also, for example, by attaching the display unit to one side of the mount unit, the mount unit can provide rigid support for the flexible display unit in use when the display unit is visible while being attached on the mount unit. Since the flexible display unit can accommodate main electronic components such as a processor, a memory, a graphics driver, and a Bluetooth (registered trademark) transceiver along one end of the display screen, the display unit can be made flexible in the region of the display screen away from that end. For example, the flexible display unit can be rolled or bent towards the end that houses the electronic components.
[0025] In one example, the mount unit can also be flexible, but to a lesser extent than one or more display units housed within or attached to the mount unit.
[0026] In one example, the display screen can include a touch-sensitive display not only for outputting information but also for user input. In an alternative embodiment, a camera can be provided within the display unit to enable user input by gesture recognition. The display unit can also enable connection to peripheral input devices such as a keyboard or a pointer device by low-power / short-range communication, for example, using Bluetooth (registered trademark).
[0027] In one example, a plurality of display units can be hingedly connected to each other to provide a foldable display structure. The display units can be removed for separate use. To receive and hold the display units, the display units are folded and the folded display units can be attached to a mount unit.
[0028] In one example, a display frame structure is provided to receive and support at least the peripheral portions of one or more display units. And the display units within the display frame structure can be attached to a mount unit. In one example, the display frame structure receives and supports a plurality of display units and includes a frame for each display unit. These frames are hingedly connected to each other to form a foldable frame structure. The frames can be removably connected to each other so that the frames can be separated. Thereby, the display units can be used within the frames. These frames provide support for the display units. This is particularly applicable to flexible display units.
[0029] The mount unit can hold each display unit in various ways. The mount unit can hold the display on one or more surfaces. Also, in another example, the mount unit can hold each display unit internally, whereby each display unit is inserted into the mount unit through one or more slots or by opening the lid or door of the mount case.
[0030] In one example, the mount unit includes a hinge region and a plurality of frames hinge-connected to the hinge region. Each frame is configured to receive and hold one display unit or two display units, one by one, on its side surface.
[0031] In one example, the mount unit includes an adjustable mounting arrangement for mounting one or more display units, and the adjustable mounting arrangement is adjustable to fit display units of different sizes therein.
[0032] In one example, the display unit can include a detector arrangement that detects when at least one other display is placed adjacent in an adjacent configuration, a wireless transceiver that communicates display synchronization information to at least one adjacent display unit, and a display controller that controls the display output so that adjacent display units cooperatively display display information.
[0033] When display units are used adjacent to each other, the information displayed by the display units can be coordinated with each other to display the information as a continuous information portion (i.e., continuous information from an information source such as consecutive pages of text or images, etc.).
[0034] When adjacent display units are repositioned relative to each other, the display controller is configured to control the display output to display the information portion so that the adjacent display units display the information as an incremented continuous information portion. That is, when the display units are moved in a way that turns the page of a book, for example, it is reflected and the information being displayed is updated so that the page being displayed is incremented.
[0035] The display unit can include any conventional method of detecting adjacency, such as optical detection, magnetic coupling, such as a Hall switch, physical contact, or RF communication. In one example, the RF communication can include short-range communication between adjacent display devices.
[0036] In the above-described configuration, the display unit that provides this improved collaborative information display capability can be used together with the mount unit.
[0037] Each display unit can be provided with a protective screen.
[0038] In one example, in addition to attaching each display unit, the mount unit can include one or more built-in displays that cannot be removed.
[0039] Each display unit can operate as a lightweight, low-power, and flexible tablet computer device that can access the Internet or any computer network (local or wide area) via the mount unit.
[0040] Next, specific embodiments will be described with reference to the drawings.
[0041] FIG. 1 shows a display device, showing a display unit 1 separated from a mount unit 2. In this example, the display unit 1 includes a generally rectangular thin and rigid or flexible display device for processing and displaying information. The mount unit 2 is a substantially rectangular body that houses electronic components, as will be described below with reference to FIG. 36. The mount unit 2 is larger in size than the display unit 1 and has a peripheral edge 2a that surrounds a concave surface 2b having dimensions slightly larger than those of the display unit 1. The concave edge 2c is perpendicular to the concave surface 2b and has a depth greater than the depth of the display unit 1, so that the display unit 1 can be received in the concave portion with respect to the concave surface 2b.
[0042] To maintain the display unit within the recess, an elastic arrangement can be provided at the recessed edge to grip the end of the display unit. A recessed area 2d is provided in the peripheral region 2a so that the display unit 1 can be detached or separated from the mount unit 2, and the user can use a lever to move the display unit 1 and prize it away from the mount unit 1.
[0043] Figures 2 to 5 show an example of a display device as shown in Figure 1. In this example, the display unit 1 is a flexible display unit. Figures 1 to 5 show the flexible display unit 1 bent at various degrees along the vertical axis. In this example, electronic devices are housed at the vertical ends of the display unit 1, and the remaining part of the display unit can be bent.
[0044] Figures 6 and 7 are side views of the display device of Figures 1 to 5, showing the separation of the display unit 1 and the mount unit 2.
[0045] Figure 8 is a cross-sectional view through the peripheral edge 2a of the mount unit 2. Such a figure shows an elastic arrangement 2e that engages with the end of the display unit 1 to hold the display unit 1 within the recess of the mount unit 2.
[0046] Figure 9 is a rear view of the display device, showing the state in which the mount unit 2 and the display unit 1 are separated.
[0047] Figures 10 to 12 show an example of a display device as shown in FIG. 1. In this example, the display unit 1 is a flexible display unit. Figures 10 to 12 show the flexible display unit 1 bent at various degrees along the horizontal axis. In this example, an electronic device is housed at the horizontal end of the display unit 1, and the remaining part of the display unit can be bent.
[0048] Figure 13 shows an example of a display device as shown in FIG. 1. In this example, the display unit 1 is a flexible display unit that can be bent along the diagonal axis.
[0049] In the examples of FIGS. 1 to 13, the display unit 1 attached to the mount unit 2 can be accessed and used by the user even when the display unit 1 is attached to the mount unit 2. Therefore, in the attached configuration, the display device can still be used by the user.
[0050] Figure 14 shows an example of a display unit device as shown in FIG. 1. In this example, the display unit 1 is attached inside the mount unit 2, and a protective cover 3 is provided for attachment to the mount unit 1 in order to protect the display when attached to the mount unit 2. The protective cover 3 can be attached to the peripheral edge 2a of the mount unit 2 using, for example, a clip or a magnetic arrangement.
[0051] Figures 15 to 18 show another example of a display device as shown in FIG. 1, but differ in that the display screen 4 is incorporated in the rear of the mount unit 2. Thereby, the user can remove the display unit 1 from the mount unit 2 and use the display unit 1 together with the display screen 4 of the mount unit 2.
[0052] Figures 19 to 27 show another exemplary display device having two display units 1a and 1b, each of which is similar to the display unit 1 of FIGS. 1 to 18, and a mount unit 20. The mount unit 20 is somewhat similar to the mount unit 2 of FIGS. 1 to 8, except that it can be double-sidedly mounted so that the two display units 1a and 1b can be attached to both sides of the mount unit 20. FIGS. 19 and 20 show the front and rear views of the state where the display units 1a and 1b are separated from the mount unit 20. FIGS. 21 and 22 are side views of the display device in the state where the display units 1a and 1b are separated from the mount unit 20. FIGS. 24 and 25 show the front and rear views of the state where the display units 1a and 1b are attached to the mount unit 20. FIGS. 26 and 27 are side views of the display device in the state where the display units 1a and 1b are attached to the mount unit 20. FIG. 23 is a cross-sectional view through the peripheral portion 2a of the mount unit 20. This figure shows an elastic arrangement 2e that engages with the ends of the display units 1a and 1b to hold the display units 1a and 1b within the recesses of the mount unit 20. Similar reference numerals in FIGS. 19 to 27 indicate similar features in FIGS. 1 to 8.
[0053] In the example of FIGS. 19 to 27, the two display units 1a and 1b attached to the mount unit 20 can be accessed and used by the user even when the display units 1a and 1b are attached to the mount unit 20. Therefore, in the attached configuration, the display device is still usable by the user.
[0054] In any of the examples of FIGS. 1 to 27, the mount unit 2 or 20 can include an adjustable mounting arrangement to enable the holding and attachment of display units of different sizes. Such an adjustable configuration can include, for example, flexible elastic arms, and the flexible elastic arms are pressed against the sides of the display unit so as to push and widen the adjustable arrangement for a larger display unit. Alternatively, the inner edge of the recess 2c can include a sliding element that slides translationally to engage with the side of the display unit.
[0055] FIG. 28 is a schematic view showing an exemplary display device having a frame 30 for receiving and supporting the display unit 1 of the form described above. In this example, the frame 30 receives and holds the display unit 1 and forms a mount unit. Each frame is similar to the mount unit 2 described with reference to FIGS. 1 to 8, and the display unit 1 is attached to only one side of the frame 30, or, similar to the mount unit 20 described with reference to FIGS. 19 to 27, the display unit 1 is attached to both sides of the frame 30.
[0056] Each frame 30 is hinge-connected to an adjacent frame 30 to form a series of frames 30 that can be folded into a stacked configuration, for example, an alternately folded configuration as indicated by the arrows in FIG. 28. In this example, the hinge connection 31 is formed at one end of either the long side of the frame 30. The hinge connection 31 enables the frames 30 to be folded against each other so that they are in a stacked state. Fasteners 32 can be provided to fasten the frames together so that the frames are folded into a stacked configuration. Therefore, in this example, the mount unit includes the stacked frames 30. In an alternative example, the hinge connection can extend along a part or all of the side surface of the frame.
[0057] Although not shown in FIG. 28, the ends of the frame could be made thin so that when the display unit is held, the display unit would appear to have substantially no edges. FIG. 29 is a schematic view showing an exemplary display device having a frame 30 similar to the frame of the exemplary display device of FIG. 28 for receiving and supporting a display unit 1, and the display unit 1 can be received and held within a mount unit 40 so as to be accommodated within a mount unit 50. Thus, the mount unit 40 provides a protective housing for the display unit 1. The mount unit 40 can include an ejection mechanism for ejecting the stacked frames 30 from the mount unit 40. The stacked frames 30 can be inserted into the mount unit 40 and held by an elastic arrangement within the mount unit 40, and the holding by the elastic arrangement can be released to eject the stacked frames 30 by the ejection mechanism.
[0058] In this example, when the frame 30 is folded so as to be stacked, the frame 30 can be inserted into a slot 41 on the side of the mount unit 40. In this example, the frame 30 can either support the display unit 1 and contain no electronic components or can contain electronic components or connectors to cooperate with the components and connectors of the mount unit 40.
[0059] In the examples of FIGS. 28 and 29, the frame 30 provides support for the display unit 1. Therefore, these examples are suitable for use in combination with a flexible display unit. The frame supports the display unit and supports it such that their shapes match the planar shape to facilitate storage within the frame 30 alone or within the mounting unit 40. In one example, the frame 30 is removable and can be removed from and reconnected to a series of frames 30 so that the frame 30 can be used separately. The display unit can be used when separated from the frame or when within the frame, and can be used when the frames are connected to each other or removed in any combination.
[0060] In the example of FIG. 28 or FIG. 29, the frame 30 can include an adjustable mounting arrangement that enables the holding and attachment of display units of different sizes. Such an adjustable arrangement can include, for example, flexible elastic arms, and the flexible elastic arms can be pressed against the sides of the display unit so that the adjustable arrangement expands for a larger display unit. Alternatively, the inner edge of the recess within the frame can include sliding elements that slide translationally to engage the sides of the display unit.
[0061] Since the frame can include a mounting unit, it can include the electronic components of the mounting unit, including one or more processors, memories, and battery charging arrangements for the display unit, such as one per frame. Also, in the embodiment of FIG. 29, the frame can include the electronic components of the mount, such as at least the charging component. When the frame includes the electronic components of the mounting unit, the frame can provide a mounting function when the frame is in an extended or deployed configuration or when the frame is separated.
[0062] FIG. 30 is a schematic view showing an exemplary display device having a foldable display unit 1 that can be received and held within a mount unit 50. In this example, the display units 1 are generally rigid and do not require a frame to support them.
[0063] Each display unit 1 is hinge-connected to an adjacent display unit 1 to form a series of display units 1. In this example, the hinge connection 1c is formed at either end of the long side of the display unit 1, but they can extend along either or all of the sides of the display unit. The hinge connection 1c allows the display units 1 to fold back on each other so that the display units 1 can be stacked. When the display units 1 are folded so as to be in a stacked configuration, they can be inserted into slots 51 on the side of the mount unit 50 so that they are received within the mount unit 50. In this way, the mount unit 50 provides a protective housing for the display units 1. The mount unit 50 can include an ejection mechanism for ejecting the stacked display units 1 from the mount unit 50. The stacked display units 1 can be inserted into the mount unit 50 and held by an elastic arrangement within the mount unit 40, and the holding by the elastic arrangement can be released in order to eject the stacked display units 1 by the ejection mechanism.
[0064] In one example, the display unit 1 is removable from a series of display units 1 and re-connectable to a series of display units 1 so that the display unit 1 can be used separately.
[0065] FIG. 31 is a schematic diagram showing an exemplary display device having a display unit 1 that can be received and held while being accommodated within a mount unit 60. In this example, the display units can be individually inserted into slots 61 on the side surface of the mount unit 60 so that all of the display units 1 can be accommodated within the mount unit 60. In this configuration, when the display unit 1 is attached within the mount unit 60, it is not accessible for use. The mount unit 60 can include an ejection mechanism for ejecting each display unit 1 from the mount unit 50 either separately or together. The display unit 1 can be inserted into the mount unit 60 and held therein by an elastic arrangement, and the holding by the elastic arrangement can be released for ejecting the display unit 1 either separately or together by the ejection mechanism.
[0066] FIG. 32 is a schematic diagram of an exemplary display device having a display unit 1 that can be received and held within a mount unit 70 via a slot 71 on the side surface of the mount unit 70, similar to the example of FIG. 31. However, in addition to the example of FIG. 31, the display device has a recess 72 provided on the surface of the mount unit 70 for receiving and holding one of the display units 1. The display unit 1 is attached to the recess 72 in a manner similar to the way the display unit is attached to the mount unit 2 in the examples of FIGS. 1 - 8. In this example, even when all of the display units 1 are attached to the mount unit 70, one of the display units can be accessed and used.
[0067] FIG. 33 is a schematic diagram showing an exemplary display device having a display unit 1 that can be received and held within a mount unit 80 via a slot 81 at the end of the mount unit 80 and can be accommodated and protected within the mount unit 80, in a manner similar to the example of FIG. 32. Except for these points, it is similar to the example of FIG. 31.
[0068] FIG. 34 is a schematic view showing an exemplary display device having a display unit 1 that can be received and held within a mount unit 300 and can be housed and protected within the mount unit 300. In this embodiment, the mount unit 300 includes two parts 301 and 302, and the two parts 301 and 302 are hingedly connected so that the mount unit can be opened to receive the display unit 1 in order to house the display unit 1. The two parts can be fastened to each other to form a closed configuration, and the fastener can be released to open the mount unit 300.
[0069] Each display unit 1 is hingedly connected to an adjacent display unit 1 to form a series of display units 1. In this example, the hinge connection portion lc is formed at either end of the long side of the display unit 1, but they can extend along any or all of the sides of the display unit. The hinge connection portion 1c allows the display units 1 to be folded back on each other so that they can be stacked. When the display units 1 are folded into a stacked configuration, they can be inserted into the mount unit 300 so as to be housed within the mount unit 300. In this way, the mount unit 300 provides a protective housing for the display units 1.
[0070] In this embodiment, two parts 301, 302 of the mount unit are shown as being hingedly connected, but these can be separated or connected to each other in any configuration such that the display unit 1 can be inserted and the display unit 1 can be stored. Also, although hingedly connected display units 1 are shown, one or more separate display units can be inserted into the two-part mount unit. At least one display unit can be fitted into a frame before being inserted into the mount unit.
[0071] The two parts 301, 302 can be partially folded back to expose one of the display units or can be completely folded back such that the outer surfaces of parts 301, 302 contact each other. When a display unit is mounted within and held by the two parts 301, 302, one or more display units can be held by one or more of the parts 301, 302 such that the displays face inwards relative to each other when parts 301, 302 are closed and face outwards when parts 301, 302 are opened relative to each other, so that each of the one or more displays or one or more display units appears to the user as one or both of the outer surfaces of a display device including a mount unit and one or more display units. Thereby, one or two of the display units can be made operable and usable by the user while being held by the mount unit. For example, one display unit can be fitted into a recess within part 301 or 302 and accessed and used when the part is open. Similarly, when two display units are each fitted into recesses of parts 301 and 302, both display units can be accessed and used when parts 301 and 302 are opened. The two parts can be folded back at a predetermined angle, for example substantially at a right angle, either partially or fully, such that the surfaces of parts 301, 302 which are the outer surfaces become flat when parts 301, 302 are closed and in contact.
[0072] In any of the examples of FIGS. 30 to 34, the mount units 60, 70, 80 can include an adjustable mounting arrangement to enable holding and attaching display units of different sizes. Such an adjustable arrangement can include, for example, flexible elastic arms that can press against the sides of the display unit when the display unit is inserted into slots 61, 71, 81 such that the adjustable arrangement is pushed wider for a larger display unit.
[0073] FIG. 35 is a schematic view showing an exemplary display device having a hinge-connected mount unit 400 for receiving and holding a display unit 1. The hinge-connected mount unit 400 includes a plurality of hinge-connected parts 401, 402, 403, and 404 that can freely hinge about a pivot member 405 (hinge region). Each of the hinge-connected parts 401, 402, 403, 404 is configured to receive the display unit 1 as a pair of hinge-connected parts (i.e., in the embodiment of FIG. 34, two pairs of hinge-connected parts 301, 302). In this example, the first pair of hinge-connected parts 401 and 402 receive, hold, and accommodate one or more display units (two are shown in this example) when the hinge-connected parts 401, 402 are closed around the display unit 1. The second pair of hinge-connected parts 403 and 404 receive, hold, and accommodate one or more display units (two are shown in this example) when the hinge-connected parts 403, 404 are closed around the display unit 1. Thus, in this example, there are two separate accommodation areas provided by the mount 400.
[0074] Accordingly, in this example, when the mounting unit 400 is hinged to a closed position where it can open like a page of a book, the display unit 1 is attached to a plurality (two in this example) of receiving areas. Thus, the mounting unit 400 allows the display unit 1 to be removed for separate use, but also allows it to be used in a form similar to a page of a book while it is attached. This configuration can be such that the display unit 1 is held and accommodated within the mounting unit 400 in a protected form.
[0075] In the example of FIG. 35, the hinge-connected parts 401, 402, 403, and 404 can include an adjustable attachment arrangement to allow for the holding and attachment of display units of different sizes. Such an adjustable configuration can include, for example, flexible elastic arms that can be pressed against the sides of the display unit such that the adjustable arrangement spreads out for a larger display unit. Alternatively, the inner edges of the recesses within the hinge-connected parts 401, 402, 403, and 404 can include slidable elements that slide translationally to engage with the sides of the display unit.
[0076] FIG. 35 shows two pairs of hinge-connected parts, but in one embodiment, the parts between the pairs can be combined into a single common part. For example, parts 402 and 403 can be made common. This can reduce the number of movable parts while providing a plurality of separate receiving areas for one or more display units.
[0077] In any of the embodiments of FIGS. 29 to 35, the mount unit can be configured to receive the display unit individually or as a group, or to receive one or more frames that hold one or more display units in one or more slots, racks, or grooves having a physical charging connector or a wireless charging function. A physical connector can also be provided for data communication between display units via each frame or between a display unit and the mount. Alternatively, the display unit can communicate with the mount unit using short-range wireless communication. The display unit can be a flexible display unit, a rigid display unit, or a display unit of a combined type.
[0078] In all of the above-described examples, the display unit can include a touch screen and / or can include a camera to enable user gesture control.
[0079] FIG. 36 is a schematic view showing an exemplary display device having a hinge-connected mount unit 90 for receiving and holding a display unit 1. The hinge-connected mount unit 90 includes a plurality of hinge-connected frames 91, 92, 93, and 94 that can freely hinge about a pivot member 95 (hinge region). Each of the hinge-connected frames 91, 92, 93, and 94 is similar to the frame 30 in the example shown in FIGS. 28 and 29. Each of the frames 91, 92, 93, 94 is configured to receive the display unit 1 in the same manner as the mount unit 2 receives the display unit 1 in the example of FIGS. 1 to 8 when only one side of the frames 91, 92, 93, 94 receives the display unit, in the same manner as the mount in the example of FIGS. 19 to 27 receives the display unit. Alternatively, the display unit 1 can be received and held on both sides to provide a double-sided information display.
[0080] Therefore, in this example, the mount unit 90 can be configured to be stacked when moved by a hinge to a closed position, but the display unit 1 is attached to a plurality of frames 91, 92, 93, 94 that can also be opened like the pages of a book. Thus, the mount unit 90 enables the display unit to be removed for separate use, but also enables the display unit to be used like the pages of a book while it is attached. This configuration enables the display unit to be held and housed within the mount unit 90 so that it is protected.
[0081] In the example of FIG. 36, the frames 91, 92, 93, and 94 can include an adjustable attachment configuration to enable the holding and attachment of display units of different sizes. Such an adjustable configuration can include, for example, flexible elastic arms that can be pressed against the sides of the display unit such that the adjustable arrangement spreads for a larger display unit. Alternatively, the inner edges of the recesses within the frame can include slidable elements that slide translationally to engage the sides of the display unit.
[0082] In all of the above examples, the display unit can include a touch screen and / or can include a camera to enable user gesture control. Also, the frames 91, 92, 93, 94 can be removed from the pivot member 95.
[0083] FIG. 37 is a schematic diagram showing the electronic components of the exemplary display unit 1 as used in the above example.
[0084] Processor 100 is connected to static memory 102 that stores code such as operating system code used by the processor and stores data non-volatilely. Volatile memory 103 is provided to store application code and data and information for display. Graphics driver 104 is provided for controlling display screen 105, and display screen 105 can be a touch screen to provide user input in response to the displayed information. Battery 107 supplies power to the electronic components, and mount power input 108 is provided to be able to recharge battery 107 when display unit 1 is attached to the mount unit. Mount power input 108 can include a physical coupling for displaying the power output 205 of the mount unit. Alternatively, an inductive coupling can be used.
[0085] Short-range / low-output transceiver 101 is connected to processor 100 for short-range and low-output communication with the short-range and low-output transceiver within the mount unit. This communication link can be used to exchange data, information, and control between the display unit and the mount unit. Thereby, the display unit can access a communication network such as the Internet via the mount unit. Also, thereby, the processor of the mount unit and the processor of the display unit can cooperate or share the information processing required by the display unit to reduce the processing power requirements of processor 100 within the display unit. The low-output / short-range communication protocol used may be Bluetooth (registered trademark). The display unit can be paired with the mount unit using the Bluetooth protocol for secure communication between the display unit and the mount unit.
[0086] Optionally, the display unit can include a module for detecting an adjacent display unit. In this example, the module can include a short-range communication module 106.
[0087] FIG. 38 is a schematic diagram showing the electronic components of an exemplary mount unit used in any of the described examples.
[0088] The processor 200 is connected to a static memory 202 that stores code such as operating system code used by the processor and stores data non-volatilely. A volatile memory 203 is provided to store application code and data and information for display.
[0089] The short-range / low-output transceiver 201 is connected to the processor 200 for short-range and low-output communication with short-range and low-output transceivers within one or more display units. This communication link can be used to exchange data, information, and control between the display unit and the mount unit. As described above, this enables the display unit to access a communication network such as the Internet via the mount unit and allows the processor of the mount unit and the processor of the display unit to cooperate or share the information processing required by the display unit to reduce the processing power requirements of the processor 100 within the display unit. The low-output / short-range communication protocol used may be Bluetooth (registered trademark). The display unit can be paired with the mount unit using the Bluetooth protocol for secure communication between the display unit and the mount unit.
[0090] For RF communication with a communication network, a transceiver 204 with a longer range and higher output is provided. The communication protocol with a longer range and higher output used by the transceiver 204 of the mount unit can be WIFI, WiMAX, CDMA, GSM, GPRS, wireless local loop or WAN.
[0091] The display power output 205 supplies power to the mount power input 108 of each display unit and can include a physical connection or alternatively use an inductive connection. The power input 206 supplies power from a power connection to the mount unit and to the display power output 205.
[0092] The mount unit can optionally include a built-in display screen 209 with an accompanying display driver 208.
[0093] A battery 207 can be provided to supply power to the electronic device when the mount unit is not connected to a power source in a portable configuration. The battery 207 can supply power to the display power output 205 when the power source is not connected to the power input 206. The power input 206 can supply power to recharge the battery 207 when the mount unit is not connected to a power source.
[0094] FIG. 39 is a schematic diagram showing an exemplary electronic display device including a plurality of display units 1 that detect the proximity of adjacent (e.g., neighboring) display units 1 to control the display of information. The display unit can include the display units described above for any of the exemplary display devices.
[0095] Figure 39 shows a pair of display units 1 placed adjacent to each other in three consecutive operations. In the top configuration, the pair of display units displays consecutive information portions A and B of a set of information. For example, the information portions can be consecutive portions of a series of information, such as consecutive images in a library or pages of text. If the user desires to read the next consecutive information portion, portion C, the user moves one of the display units to switch the relative positions of the display units. As indicated by the arrow, it moves to the second configuration of the pair of display units. The detection arrangement within the display unit detects the change in the relative positions of the display units, and the processor 100 functioning as a display controller updates the information portion to be displayed such that the right display unit displays the information portion C. The display panel that was displaying the information portion B on the right is now on the left.
[0096] If the user desires to read the next consecutive information portion, portion D, the user moves one of the display units to switch the relative positions of the display units. As indicated by the arrow, it moves to the third configuration of the pair of display units. The detection arrangement within the display unit detects the change in the relative positions of the display units, and the processor 100 functioning as a display controller updates the information portion to be displayed such that the right display unit displays the information portion D. The display panel that was displaying the information portion C on the right is now on the left.
[0097] The operation of switching the display indicates incrementing the portion of the information displayed by moving the display unit from left to right, but the reverse operation also holds. To decrement the portion of the information displayed, the user can move the right display to the left of the left display. Therefore, the arrow shown in FIG. 37 can be reversed. Since the end positions of the relative positions of the display units after the increment or decrement operation are the same, the detection arrangement in the display unit detects which of the display units has been moved relative to the other in order to identify whether the operation is an instruction to increment or decrement the display of the information portion. For example, if the left display unit is lifted and moved relative to the right display unit, this can be detected by the detection arrangement of the left display unit, and the left display unit can be controlled to increment the portion of the information displayed, for example, from portion A to portion C. If the right display unit is lifted and moved relative to the left display unit, this can be detected by the detection arrangement of the right display unit, and the right display unit can be controlled to decrement the portion of the information displayed, for example, from portion C to portion A.
[0098] Since the display units in this example are lightweight display units, the user can handle them in a similar manner to paper, which is a medium with which the user is familiar. Therefore, using two display units adjacent to each other is similar to an open book or magazine where two pages are shown at once. Conventionally, to view the next page, the user turns the page. In this example, the user "turns" the display unit in the direction in which the user reads according to the language and in the way the user feels more comfortable, either by moving the left display unit to the right or the right display unit to the left.
[0099] Therefore, the embodiment shown in FIG. 38 includes a method of using the display units described and illustrated above.
[0100] FIG. 40 is a schematic diagram showing another exemplary electronic display device including a plurality of display units that detect the proximity of adjacent display units to control the display of information.
[0101] In this example, one or both of the display units 1 include a double-sided display unit having displays on both sides of the display unit. Therefore, in this example, "turning" the page described in the previous example, as indicated by the rotation arrow and arrow that move the right display unit in each configuration, is enhanced by lifting and rotating the right display, similar to turning the page of a book or magazine.
[0102] In the top configuration, a pair of display units display consecutive information portions A and B of a set of information. For example, the information portions can be consecutive pages of text. If the user wishes to read the next consecutive information portion, portion C, the user moves the right display unit to the left of the left display unit and flips the right display unit as indicated by the arrow to move to the second configuration of the pair of display units. The detection arrangement within the display unit detects the change in the relative position of the display units, and the processor 100, which functions as a display controller, updates the information portions to be displayed such that the left display unit displays information portion C and the right display unit displays information portion D. In this example, two new information portions, for example text pages, are displayed.
[0103] If the user wishes to read portion E, which is the next consecutive information portion, the user moves the right display unit to the left of the left display unit and flips the right display unit as indicated by the arrow to move to the third configuration of the pair of display units. The detection arrangement within the display unit detects the change in the relative position of the display units, and the processor 100, which functions as a display controller, updates the information portions to be displayed such that the left display unit displays information portion E and the right display unit displays information portion F.
[0104] The movement of the right display unit in combination with the flipping operation provides the user with an intuitive sense of flipping the pages of a book or magazine.
[0105] In this example, for instance, by lifting the left display unit and rotating it, for example, in the opposite direction, the information portion can also be decremented by the opposite operation shown in FIG. 40.
[0106] This embodiment shows an example where the text language is read from left to right. If the text language is read from right to left, the operations are reversed.
[0107] Therefore, the embodiment shown in FIG. 39 includes the method of using the display units described and illustrated above.
[0108] FIGS. 41 to 43 are schematic diagrams showing a dual-sided display unit having displays on both sides that is operated to display consecutive portions of a series of information portions such as images or text pages in a series of images such as a library.
[0109] In FIG. 41, a series of operations for incrementing the display of the information portion are shown. The first display of the display unit first displays the information portion 1 on one side of the display. Next, when the display unit is lifted and rotated or turned over in the first direction as indicated by the arrow, the second display of the display unit detects that it is now facing upward and displays the portion 2 which is the next information portion. Next, when the display unit is lifted and rotated or turned over again in the first direction as indicated by the arrow, the first display of the display unit detects that it is now facing upward and displays the portion 3 which is the next information portion.
[0110] In FIG. 42, a series of operations for decrementing the display of the information portion are shown. The first display of the display unit first displays the information portion 3 on one side of the display. Next, when the display unit is lifted and rotated or turned over in the second direction as indicated by the arrow, the second display of the display unit detects that it is now facing upward and displays the portion 2 which is the previous information portion. Next, when the display unit is lifted and rotated or turned over again in the second direction as indicated by the arrow, the first display of the display unit detects that it is now facing upward and displays the portion 1 which is the previous information portion.
[0111] In FIG. 43, a series of operations for incrementing and decrementing the display of the information portion are shown. The first display of the display unit first displays the information portion 1 on one side of the display. Next, when the display unit is lifted and rotated or turned over in the first direction as indicated by the arrow, the second display of the display unit detects that it is now facing upward and displays the portion 2 which is the next information portion. Next, when the display unit is lifted and rotated or turned over again in the second direction as indicated by the arrow, the first display of the display unit detects that it is now facing upward and displays the portion 1 which is the previous information portion.
[0112] This operation of the dual-sided display unit provides an intuitive reading motion similar to turning the pages of a book.
[0113] Therefore, the embodiments shown in FIGS. 41 to 43 include methods of using the display units described above and illustrated.
[0114] FIG. 44 is a schematic diagram showing the electronic components of an exemplary display unit used in the example described above with reference to FIGS. 40 to 42.
[0115] The processor 300 stores codes such as operating system codes used by the processor and is connected to the static memory 102 that stores data non-volatily. A volatile memory 303 is provided to store application codes and data and information for display. The orientation detector 301 is provided to detect a change in orientation when the display unit is rotated and optionally detect the direction of rotation to enable changes in both the increment and decrement of the information portion to be displayed. A graphics driver 304 is provided for controlling the two display screens 305, 306. The two display screens 305, 306 may be touch screens to provide user input in response to the information displayed.
[0116] The dual-sided display unit of this embodiment can be used as any of the display units of the foregoing embodiments.
[0117] FIG. 45 is a schematic diagram showing the communication of information by an exemplary electronic display device.
[0118] This figure shows the configuration of a display device while communicating with a communication network such as the Internet or a local network. This is applicable to the display devices of any of the above examples. One or more display units 1 (two display units 1 in this example) communicate with the mount unit 300 using a low-output short-distance communication protocol such as Bluetooth (registered trademark). The range can be limited to less than 10m. The mount unit 300 can communicate with the Internet 500 or a computer network (which may be the Internet 500) via a cellular network using a longer-distance and higher-output communication protocol such as GSM or GPRS, and communicate with the router 400 using WIFI for connection.
[0119] By using the mount unit and high-output long-distance transmission, multiple display units can use the same communication link, and the display unit can reduce the power consumption requirements of display unit 1 using a low-output short-distance link to the mount unit.
[0120] In any of the above-described examples, the display unit can be, for example, flexible, such as an OLED or flexible LED display, or a rigid display, such as an LED display or a combination of flexible and rigid displays. Any display unit may be a touch panel to provide a means for the user to provide an input for processing by the processor of the display unit (in some cases, in combination with the processor of the mount unit).
[0121] The drawings and the accompanying description illustrate a portable device, but in other examples, the mount device may be fixed to or be part of a stationary or non - portable device such as a large computer or a desktop computer, a machine such as a CNC machine, or may be incorporated into a vehicle such as an automobile or an aircraft, where the mount device is fixed and the display unit can be removed for use. For example, a passenger or a driver or a pilot can remove the display unit from the mount unit for interaction with the display unit. A passenger can use each display unit for entertainment purposes, while a driver or a pilot can use each display unit for vehicle control or monitoring purposes. In such a fixed configuration, communication from the mount unit to the communication network can be performed either wired or wirelessly. In the wireless case, the wireless transceiver can be of higher power and longer range compared to the transceiver used for communication between the display unit and the mount unit.
[0122] The mount unit or frame may be portable, but can be used with a fixed device or may be part of the fixed device so as to be separable and replaceable from the fixed device. Thus, the portable display device can be removed to facilitate carrying while cooperating with the fixed device as part of the fixed device.
[0123] In a fixed configuration where the mount is fixed or is part of it, the device can include one or more other fixed displays.
[0124] In any of the described examples, since each display unit can operate independently, multiple display units can be used by multiple people. Therefore, a mount unit including multiple display units can be removed from the mount unit and can provide display units that can be used independently by multiple people or in a coordinated operation over a network. Since the display unit has its own memory and processor, information and data can be stored and processed separately and independently. Also, the display unit can share the stored information and data. Further, the display unit can share information with an external processor such as a processor remotely connected on a PC with a fixed mount or on a network.
[0125] In the above example, the display unit can be used like a tablet computer device separately from the mount unit. The display unit can function like a network computer device and can be connected on a low-power short-distance communication link via a hub to other devices connected to a computer / communication network.
[0126] In the above example, it was explained that the display units are rechargeable when they are attached to the mount unit. In another example, the display unit can also be charged independently of the mount. For example, if the display units are wirelessly charged when they are inside the mount, they can be wirelessly charged by another wireless charging pad away from the mount unit. If a physical connection is used to charge the wireless unit, in one example, a separate charging device having the physical mating connection necessary to charge the display unit away from the mount unit can be provided.
[0127] In any of the above examples, if the display unit has screens on both sides, the display unit can be turned over to view the information on both sides. Similarly, if the mount unit can hold the display unit on both sides with the screen visible, for example, as described with reference to FIGS. 39 to 41, the mount can be turned over to view the information on both sides.
[0128] The mount unit provides a structure for safely storing and physically protecting the display unit, particularly when the display unit is inserted into and housed within the mount unit.
[0129] The display unit can include a camera, generally known as a web camera, to provide a video function, one or more loudspeakers for audio output, and one or more microphones for audio input.
[0130] In any of the described embodiments, the display unit can be used when separated from the mount unit or the display frame structure. The display unit can also be used when it is within the mount unit or the display frame structure. In any embodiment of the mount unit, at least one display unit can be attached to the frame before being installed within the mount unit.
[0131] In the embodiments of FIGS. 1 to 36, FIGS. 39 to 43, and FIG. 45, the display unit is shown as a simplified schematic view in the form of a rectangular unit. The display unit can take any form in which the display portion constitutes the entire front surface or the front and rear surfaces, or the display portion can be surrounded by a frame. The display unit can be rigid, flexible, malleable, or foldable, or, if multiple units are used, a combination of rigid, flexible, malleable, or foldable display units.
[0132] In any of the foregoing embodiments, the mount unit, the frame, or the display unit may be rigid, foldable, flexible, or malleable.
[0133] In the above-described embodiments, the display unit can include, for example, a keyboard or other components that are foldable and held on the display unit, and a display unit having a keyboard or other foldable components can be inserted into the mount unit.
