AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing mechanical ventilation systems, particularly manual and mechanical ventilators, lack precise control over breath size, breathing rate, and other critical variables, leading to risks such as VILI (Ventilator-Induced Lung Injury) and VAP (Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia), with data acquisition capabilities absent in manual ventilators and compatibility issues between different ventilation modalities.

Method used

A data-integrated convertible ventilator circuit (DiCVC) system that includes a convertible ventilator circuit, data acquisition unit (DAU), and data processing unit (DPU) for seamless integration with both manual and mechanical ventilators, ensuring continuous data acquisition and transmission across ventilation phases, along with filtration to prevent airborne pathogen transmission.

Benefits of technology

The system reduces risks of VILI and VAP by providing continuous data acquisition and transmission, ensuring optimal ventilation settings, and maintaining data continuity during transitions between manual and mechanical ventilation, while preventing pathogen spread.

Abstract

A method of operating an artificial ventilation system is provided that includes providing an artificial ventilation system that includes: (i) a convertible ventilator circuit configured to switch between manual and mechanical ventilation use; (ii) a patient manifold connected to the convertible ventilator circuit and including one or more sensor ports; (iii) an airway adjunct connector connected between the patient manifold and an airway adjunct in physical contact with a patient; and (iii) a data acquisition unit including one or more sensors configured to interface with the one or more sensor ports of the patient manifold. The method also includes determining, by the data acquisition unit, whether the airway adjunct connector is at least partially disconnected from the patient manifold and signaling an alarm by the data acquisition unit when the at least partial disconnection is detected.

Claims

1. 1. A method for operating an artificial ventilation system, comprising: providing the artificial ventilation system comprising: (i) a convertible ventilator circuit configured to switch between manual and mechanical ventilation use; (ii) a patient manifold connected to the convertible ventilator circuit, the patient manifold comprising one or more sensor ports; (iii) an airway adjunct connector connected between the patient manifold and an airway adjunct in physical contact with a patient; and (iii) a data acquisition unit comprising one or more sensors configured to interface with the one or more sensor ports of the patient manifold; a disconnection determining step in which the data acquisition unit determines whether the airway adjunct connector is at least partially disconnected from the patient manifold; the data acquisition unit signaling an alarm when the at least partial disconnection is detected.

2. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the airway adjunct connector comprises an airway adjunct identification chip containing stored parameters.

3. 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the stored parameters include one or more of airway adjunct size, shape, manufacturing lot number, cuff size, cuff shape, and previously recorded data indicative of use on previous patients.

4. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the airway adjunct is one or more of a face mask, a supraglottic airway, an endotracheal tube, and an airway adjunct connector.

5. 3. The method of claim 2, further comprising establishing electrical communication between the data acquisition unit and the airway adjunct identification chip through the airway adjunct connector to a corresponding receptacle on the patient manifold.

6. 6. The method of claim 5, wherein the disconnection determining step comprises determining whether there is a loss of the electrical communication between the data acquisition unit and the airway adjunct identification chip.

7. 7. The method of claim 6, further comprising detecting a partial disconnection between the airway adjunct connector and the patient manifold when the loss of electrical communication is detected while the data acquisition unit continues to record a positive pressure indicating that the airway adjunct connector remains sufficiently connected to contain pressure.

8. 6. The method of claim 5, further comprising applying a manual force to the airway adjunct connector to restore a physical connection between the airway adjunct connector and the patient manifold when the partial disconnection is detected to restore the electrical communication between the data acquisition unit and the airway adjunct identification chip.

9. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the artificial ventilation system further comprises a heat-moisture exchanger compatible with the convertible ventilator circuit, the heat-moisture exchanger comprising: (i) one or more re-entrapment zone sensors for sensing one or more conditions in a re-entrapment zone; (ii) one or more non-re-entrapment zone sensors for sensing the one or more conditions in a non-re-entrapment zone; and (iii) pressure tubes connected to corresponding sensors of the data acquisition unit.

10. 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the re-entrapment zone and the non-re-entrapment zone are located on opposite sides of a heat and moisture re-entrapment element of the artificial ventilation system.

11. calculating a difference between measurements taken by the one or more recapture zone sensors and measurements taken by the one or more no-recapture zone sensors; 10. The method of claim 9, further comprising the step of: comparing said difference against one or more criteria representative of acceptable limits of degradation of said heat-moisture exchanger.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein a gradually decreasing difference indicates a gradually decreasing functional effectiveness of the heat and moisture exchanger.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising the step of the data acquisition unit signaling an alarm when the difference exceeds the one or more criteria indicative of degradation of the heat-moisture exchanger.

14. 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the one or more recapture zone sensors and the one or more no-recapture zone sensors are temperature and humidity sensors, and the one or more conditions sensed are one or more of temperature or moisture level in the respective zones.
