Description

[Technical field]

[0001] This application claims the benefit of the filing date of Korean Patent Application No. 10-2022-0184180, filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Office on December 26, 2022, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.

[0002] The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for manufacturing an electrode assembly. [Background technology]

[0003] In general, a secondary battery is a battery that can be charged and discharged, unlike a primary battery that cannot be charged. Such secondary batteries are widely used in the field of advanced electronic devices such as phones, laptops, and camcorders.

[0004] The stability of the secondary battery can be ensured by passing a stability test in which one side of the secondary battery is crimped with a crimping machine and an internal short circuit is measured.

[0005] Depending on the shape of the battery case, secondary batteries are classified into cylindrical batteries and prismatic batteries, in which the electrode assembly is housed in a cylindrical or prismatic metal battery case, and pouch-type batteries, in which the electrode assembly is housed in a pouch-type battery case made of an aluminum laminate sheet.

[0006] The electrode assembly built into the battery case is a chargeable and dischargeable power generating element made of a laminated structure of a positive electrode / separator / negative electrode, and is classified into a folding type electrode assembly (jelly roll) in which a long sheet-like positive electrode and negative electrode coated with an active material are wound with a separator interposed between them, and a stack type electrode assembly in which a number of positive electrodes and negative electrodes of a given size are stacked in sequence with a separator interposed between them. Among them, the jelly roll has the advantage of being easy to manufacture and having a high energy density per weight.

[0007] A conventional jelly roll type electrode assembly may be provided in a structure in which the positive electrode is shorter than the separator and the outermost periphery is wound around the negative electrode uncoated portion. A conventional manufacturing apparatus for a jelly roll type electrode assembly includes a push roller that presses the outer periphery of the jelly roll so that the jelly roll is not unwound until the end of the negative electrode uncoated portion is taped.

[0008] In the conventional electrode assembly, when the separator is cut, the winding force of the separator is reduced, and the force with which the separator presses the positive electrode is also reduced.

[0009] A section occurred in which the positive electrode, which had been wound with the separator pressed toward the center of the core, rotated without being fixed to the push roller. At this time, the elastic force of the positive electrode trying to unravel caused the positive electrode to repel the separator located on one side of the positive electrode, resulting in a problem in which the separator was bent in the direction toward the positive electrode due to the elastic force of the positive electrode. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

[0010] In view of the above-mentioned problems of the related art, the present invention provides an apparatus and method for manufacturing an electrode assembly that prevents folding of a separator by suppressing the elastic force of a positive electrode until winding of the separator is completed. [0015] One embodiment of the present invention provides an electrode assembly manufacturing apparatus, further comprising a cutting unit that cuts the first separator and the second separator, the cutting unit cutting the first separator and the second separator to a length longer than a length of the second electrode.

[0016] One embodiment of the present invention provides an electrode assembly manufacturing apparatus, wherein the first fixing part fixes the electrode assembly wound around the winding core before the winding ends of the first separator and the second separator are fixed to the second fixing part.

[0017] Another embodiment of the present invention provides a method for manufacturing an electrode assembly, including a winding step of winding a first electrode, a first separator, a second electrode, and a second separator around a winding core to manufacture an electrode assembly; a first fixing step of fixing an outermost circumference of the electrode assembly with a first fixing part; and a second fixing step of rotating the winding core to fix ends of the first separator and the second separator to a second fixing part.

[0018] Another embodiment of the present invention provides a method for manufacturing an electrode assembly, wherein the first fixing step comprises moving the first fixing part in a direction in which the winding core is located to bring the first fixing part into contact with the winding material.

[0023] The detailed description of the present invention is intended to fully explain the present invention to those skilled in the art. Throughout the specification, when a part is described as "comprising" a certain element or when a certain structure and shape are described as "featuring", this means that other elements, structures, and shapes may be included, without excluding other elements or excluding other structures and shapes, unless otherwise specified to the contrary.

[0024] Since the present invention can be modified in various ways and can have various embodiments, a specific embodiment will be presented and described in detail in the detailed description. However, this is not intended to limit the content of the invention according to the embodiment, and it should be understood that the present invention includes all modifications, equivalents, or alternatives within the spirit and technical scope of the present invention.

[0025] The present invention will be described in detail below with reference to the drawings. However, the drawings are for illustrating the present invention and the scope of the present invention is not limited by the drawings.

[0026] 1 is a cross-sectional view showing an apparatus 100 for manufacturing an electrode assembly according to an embodiment of the present invention. The apparatus 100 for manufacturing an electrode assembly includes a winding core 10, a cutting unit (not shown), a first fixing unit 20, and a second fixing unit 30.

[0027] The winding core 10 winds up the first electrode 1, the first separation membrane 3, the second electrode 2, and the second separation membrane 4. In one embodiment, the winding core 10 may be cylindrical or rod-shaped. The winding core 10 may be provided with a groove of a certain length from the surface toward the center, and the winding start ends of the first separation membrane 3 and the second separation membrane 4 may be fixed to the groove.

[0028] The winding core 10 can rotate clockwise or counterclockwise to wind up the first electrode 1, the first separator 3, the second electrode 2, and the second separator 4. The first electrode 1, the first separator 3, the second electrode 2, and the second separator 4 wound around the winding core 10 may be a precursor or a wound product of an electrode assembly. The precursor of the electrode assembly may be a jelly roll structure.

[0029] The electrode assembly manufacturing apparatus 100 according to the present invention may further include a driving unit (not shown) that rotates the winding core 10. The driving unit may be coupled to one side of the winding core 10 and may provide a rotational force to the winding core 10.

[0030] In the electrode assembly according to the present invention, the first electrode 1, the first separator 3, the second electrode 2, and the second separator 4 may be wound in this order, and the first electrode 1 or the uncoated portion of the first electrode may be wound around the outermost periphery. In one embodiment, the first electrode 1 is a negative electrode, and the uncoated portion of the first electrode is a negative electrode uncoated portion described below. That is, the electrode assembly according to the present invention includes a structure in which a negative electrode current collector is wound around the outermost periphery. In the present invention, the precursor of the electrode assembly refers to a state before the first electrode 1, the first separator 3, the second electrode 2, and the second separator 4 are completely wound, and the electrode assembly refers to a state in which the first electrode 1, the first separator 3, the second electrode 2, and the second separator 4 are completely wound, and a tape is attached to the wound end of the negative electrode uncoated portion.

[0031] The electrode assembly includes a second electrode 2, a first electrode 1, and separators 3, 4 located between the second electrode 2 and the first electrode 1, and is a power generating element capable of charging and discharging.

[0032] The second electrode 2, i.e., the positive electrode, may include a positive electrode current collector, a positive electrode active material portion, and a positive electrode uncoated portion. The positive electrode current collector is a metal thin plate having excellent electrical conductivity, and may include, for example, aluminum (Al) foil.

[0033] The positive electrode 2 is a positive electrode current collector having a positive active material coated on at least one of both sides thereof, the area coated with the positive active material being the positive active material portion, and the area not coated with the positive active material being the positive electrode uncoated portion. The positive electrode uncoated portion is not coated with the positive active material layer, so that a first electrode tab can be bonded thereto.

[0034] The positive electrode active material may include lithium cobalt oxide having a high operating voltage and excellent capacity characteristics, lithium nickel oxide having a high reversible capacity and facilitating the realization of a large-capacity battery, lithium nickel cobalt oxide in which nickel is partially substituted with cobalt, lithium nickel cobalt metal oxide in which nickel is partially substituted with manganese, cobalt or aluminum, lithium manganese-based oxide having excellent thermal stability and being inexpensive, and lithium iron phosphate having excellent stability.

[0035] The first electrode, i.e., the negative electrode 1, may include a negative electrode current collector, a negative electrode active material portion, and a negative electrode uncoated portion. The negative electrode current collector may include a metal thin plate having excellent electrical conductivity, such as a copper (Cu) or nickel (Ni) foil.

[0036] The negative electrode 1 is a negative electrode current collector coated with a negative active material on one or both sides, the negative active material portion is formed by coating or spreading the negative active material, and the negative uncoated portion is a region where the negative active material is not coated or spread and the negative current collector is exposed. Since the negative uncoated portion is not coated with the negative active material, a second electrode tab can be bonded thereto.

[0037] The negative electrode active material may be, for example, a carbon material such as crystalline carbon, amorphous carbon, carbon composite, or carbon fiber, lithium metal, or a lithium alloy, etc. In this case, the negative electrode active material may further include, for example, non-graphite-based SiO (silica) or SiC (silicon carbide) for high capacity design.

[0038] The first electrode tab and the second electrode tab transmit electrons collected in the current collector to an external circuit, and may protrude in opposite directions from the electrode assembly of the jelly roll structure.

[0039] The separators 3 and 4 serve to prevent an internal short circuit that may occur due to contact between the positive electrode 2 and the negative electrode 1, and may include a porous material to facilitate the movement of ions between the electrodes.

[0040] In an embodiment, the separation membranes 3 and 4 may include a substrate layer made of a porous material. The substrate layer may include, for example, any one selected from the group consisting of polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), and a copolymer of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP).

[0041] In another embodiment, the separation membranes 3 and 4 may include a safety reinforced separator (SRS) membrane. That is, the separation membranes 3 and 4 may include a substrate layer made of a porous material and a coating layer formed by applying a mixed slurry of inorganic particles and a binder polymer to be coated on the substrate layer. Preferably, the coating layer has a uniform pore structure formed by the interstitial volume between the ceramic particles, which are active layer components, as well as the pore structure contained in the separation membrane substrate itself, including ceramic particles.

[0042] The coating layer may include ceramic particles including at least one selected from the group consisting of alumina, silica, TiO2, SiC, and MgAl2O4. By including such a coating layer, the safety of the electrode assembly can be enhanced. The coating layer may further include a lithium salt.

[0043] The cutting unit cuts the first separator 3 and the second separator 4. The cutting unit can cut the first separator 3 and the second separator 4 to lengths longer than the lengths of the negative electrode active material portion and the positive electrode active material portion. Here, the length refers to the distance between both ends of the negative electrode 1, the first separator 3, the positive electrode 2, and the second separator 4 located in the direction moving toward the winding core 10.

[0044] The cutting portion is not particularly limited in type and shape as long as it can cut first separation membrane 3 and second separation membrane 4.

[0045] The first fixing part 20 may fix the outermost periphery of the electrode assembly. Specifically, the first fixing part 20 contacts the outermost periphery of the wound material to fix the wound material so as to maintain the wound material wound on the winding core 10. In other words, the first fixing part 20 may press the outermost periphery of the wound material toward the center of the winding core 10 to fix the wound shape of the wound material. The part of the wound material that comes into contact with the first fixing part 20 may be the negative electrode, more specifically, the negative electrode uncoated portion.

[0046] Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view showing a first fixed part 20 according to one embodiment of the present invention, Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view showing a first fixed part 20 according to another embodiment of the present invention, and Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view showing a first fixed part 20 according to another embodiment of the present invention.

[0047] In one embodiment, the first fixed part 20 includes a support part 21, a fixed roller 23, and a position adjustment part 24. In another embodiment and also another embodiment, the first fixed part 20 includes a support part 21, a connecting part 22, a fixed roller 23, and a position adjustment part 24.

[0048] The support portion 21 is fixed to another structure, a wall surface, the ground, or the like to support the first fixed portion 20 .

[0049] The connecting portion 22 connects the fixed roller 23 described below and the support portion 21, and is located on one surface of the support portion 21. The connecting portion 22 may include a first connecting portion 22a having one end connected to the support portion 21, a second connecting portion 22b having one end connected to the fixed roller 23 and the other end connected to the first connecting portion 22a, and a rotating portion C in which the second connecting portion 22b is provided movably by a position adjusting portion 24.

[0050] For example, the first connecting portion 22a may extend in a direction perpendicular to the support portion 21. In other words, the first connecting portion 22a may extend at a right angle to one surface of the support portion 21.

[0051] Alternatively, the first connecting part 22a supports the second connecting part 22b, and may be located on one surface of the support part 21 in parallel with the support part 21 and extend in the opposite direction to the direction in which the position adjustment part 24 is located. In this case, the first connecting part 22a may partially overlap the support part 21, and the support part 21 and the first connecting part 22a may be connected by a hinge.

[0052] The second connecting portion 22b is located between the fixed roller 23 and the first connecting portion 22a, and can be rotated or moved by the position adjustment portion 24.

[0053] In another embodiment of the first fixing part 20, the connecting part 22 is formed to extend in the vertical direction of the support part 21, and in this case, the second connecting part 22b can form an angle of 180° or less with the first connecting part 22a. Preferably, the angle formed between the second connecting part 22b and the first connecting part 22a is 10° to 150°, and more preferably 30° to 120°.

[0054] In another embodiment, when the connecting portion 22 is formed to extend horizontally with the support portion 21, the fixed roller 23, i.e., the second connecting portion 22b, may form an angle of 90° or less with the support portion 21 or the connecting portion 22. Preferably, the angle formed between the second connecting portion 22b and the support portion 21 or the first connecting portion 22a may be 10° to 90°, and more preferably 30° to 90°.

[0055] The fixing roller 23 can contact the outermost periphery of the wound material wound around the core 10 before or simultaneously with the cutting of the separation membranes 3 and 4, and fix the wound material. That is, the fixing roller 23 can press and fix the wound ends of the positive electrode 2 and the separation membranes 3 and 4 in the wound material.

[0056] The first fixing part 20 of the present invention fixes a part of the positive electrode 2, specifically the winding end part of the positive electrode 2, before or simultaneously with cutting the separation membranes 3, 4, thereby preventing the separation membranes 3, 4 from being damaged or broken due to the elasticity of the positive electrode 2 when the separation membranes 3, 4 are cut.

[0057] The fixed roller 23 moves in the direction in which the winding core 10 is located, and comes into contact with a part of the wound material wound around the winding core 10 and presses the wound material. At this time, the wound material has a structure in which the negative electrode 1, the first separator 3, the positive electrode 2, and the second separator 4 are wound multiple times, and then the negative electrode uncoated portion does not wind up the outermost periphery of the wound material. Therefore, even if the thickness of the wound material increases as the negative electrode uncoated portion is wound, the fixed roller 23 can accommodate the change in thickness of the wound material because it can rotate by the rotating shaft.

[0058] The position adjustment unit 24 is located between one surface of the fixed roller 23 and one surface of the support unit 21, and provides an elastic force to the fixed roller 23. The position adjustment unit 24 may include a material having a restoring force. For example, the position adjustment unit 24 includes an elastic member, and the elastic member may include any of silicone, rubber, and a spring.

[0059] The fixed roller 23 can press the wound material by the restoring force of the position adjusting part 24. In one embodiment, the narrower the angle between the fixed roller 23 and the connecting part 22, the greater the elastic force or restoring force of the position adjusting part 24. The elastic force or restoring force of the position adjusting part 24 pushes out the support part 21 and the fixed roller 23, and therefore, the fixed roller 23 can press and fix the wound material by receiving an elastic force from the position adjusting part 24 in the direction in which the wound material is located.

[0060] The first fixed part 20 is movable in a first direction in which the winding core 10 is located and in a second direction that is the opposite direction. Therefore, the electrode assembly manufacturing apparatus 100 according to the present invention may further include a moving rail (not shown) coupled to the first fixed part 20 to move the first fixed part 20 in the first and second directions.

[0061] The second fixing part 30 is positioned apart from the first fixing part 20 along the circumference of the winding core 10 and fixes the ends of the first separation membrane 3 and the second separation membrane 4. The second fixing part 30 can fix the ends of the first separation membrane 3 and the second separation membrane 4 by contacting the first fixing part 20 or by contacting a part of the wound material that is not fixed by the first fixing part 20.

[0062] The second fixing part 30 can be moved in a third direction in which the winding core 10 is located, and in a fourth direction that is the opposite direction to the third direction. Therefore, the electrode assembly manufacturing apparatus 100 may further include a moving part (not shown) that moves the second fixing part 30 in the third and fourth directions. The form of the moving part is not particularly limited as long as it can move the second fixing part 30 in the third and fourth directions.

[0063] In the wound material according to the present invention, the length of the first separator 3 and the second separator 4 may be longer than the length of the positive electrode 2. In other words, the first separator 3 and the second separator 4 may include a first portion between which the positive electrode 2 is located and a second portion between which the positive electrode 2 is not located. The length of the second portion may correspond to half the circumference of the wound material.

[0064] For example, the circumference of the wound article where the first separator 3, the second separator 4 and the negative electrode uncoated portion are not wound may be 50 mm to 80 mm. In this case, the length of the second portion may be 25 mm to 40 mm, which is half the circumference of the wound article.

[0065] In addition, the distance between the first fixing part 20 and the second fixing part 30 of the electrode assembly manufacturing apparatus 100 according to the present invention may correspond to the length of the second portion of the first separator 3 and the second separator 4. That is, the distance between the first fixing part 20 and the second fixing part 30 may be a length corresponding to half the circumference of the wound material.

[0066] Since the distance between the first fixing part 20 and the second fixing part 30 corresponds to the length of the second portion of the first separator 3 and the second separator 4, the first fixing part 20 can pressurize and fix the negative electrode uncoated portion, the first separator 3, the positive electrode 2, and the second separator 4 until the ends of the first separator 3 and the second separator 4, i.e., the winding ends of the first separator 3 and the second separator 4, are fixed to the second fixing part 30.

[0067] Therefore, since the free rotation section is reduced or not generated until the positive electrode 2 has completed winding up the first separator 3 and the second separator 4 and the negative electrode uncoated portion, the elastic force of the positive electrode 2 is prevented, and the first separator 3 and the second separator 4 are prevented from being bent by the positive electrode 2 repelling the first separator 3 and the second separator 4 due to the elastic force of the positive electrode 2. Here, the free rotation section refers to the section from when the first separator 3 and the second separator 4 are cut to before the positive electrode 2 is fixed by the first fixing part 20 or the second fixing part 30.

[0068] The fixed roller 23 and the second fixed part 30 may include a material that does not chemically react with the negative electrode uncoated part. The fixed roller 23 and the second fixed part 30 may include an elastic material. For example, the fixed roller 23 and the second fixed part 30 may include one or more of urethane, silicon, carbon, aluminum, a metal, and a polymer.

[0069] In addition, when the fixing roller 23 and the second fixing part 30 are made of metal, the metal surface may be coated, plated or physicochemically surface-treated to prevent chemical reaction with the negative electrode uncoated part.

[0070] The manufacturing method of the electrode assembly according to the present invention includes a winding step (S10) of winding a positive electrode, a first separator, a negative electrode, and a second separator around a winding core to produce a wound material, a first fixing step (S20) of fixing a portion of the wound material with a first fixing part and cutting the first separator and the second separator, and a second fixing step (S30) of rotating the winding core to fix ends of the first separator and the second separator to a second fixing part.

[0071] The winding step (S10) may include a separator fixing step (S11) of fixing starting ends of the first separator and the second separator to a winding core, a negative electrode supplying step (S12) of supplying a negative electrode to one side of the second separator, and a positive electrode supplying step (S13) of supplying a positive electrode to one side of the first separator.

[0072] In the winding step (S10), after the separator fixing step (S11), the core may be rotated to wind up the separator while supplying the anode and cathode, or the cathode, the first separator, the anode and the second separator may be stacked, and then the core may be rotated to wind up the cathode, the first separator, the anode and the second separator.

[0073] The first fixing step (S20) may include a step (S21) of moving the first fixing part in a direction where the winding core is located to bring the first fixing part into contact with the wound material and fix the wound material, and a step (S22) of cutting the first separation membrane and the second separation membrane.

[0074] In the step of cutting the first and second separators (S22), the first and second separators may be cut to a length longer than the length of the positive electrode. That is, the first and second separators may extend along the circumference of the wound material at a position corresponding to the winding end of the positive electrode, and the negative electrode and the positive electrode may not be located between the extended first and second separators.

[0075] In this case, the extended portions of the first and second separation membranes may have a length corresponding to half the circumference of the wound material, and the first and second separation membranes may be fixed by the first fixing part until the winding end is fixed to the second fixing part.

[0076] For example, when the winding end of the positive electrode is located at the rear end of the second fixing part, the first fixing part can move to fix the wound material. Also, when the first separator and the second separator are cut by the set lengths of the first separator and the second separator, the elastic force of the positive electrode can be reduced by the pressing force of the first fixing part fixing the first separator and the second separator until the winding end of the first separator and the second separator pass through the first fixing part and are fixed to the second fixing part due to the rotation of the winding core.

[0077] In addition, if the positive electrode has a free rotation section between the circumferential cuts of the wound material, the separator may be folded due to the elastic force of the positive electrode. In this case, the folded portion of the separator may be unfolded as the winding is performed due to the rotation of the winding core and the pressing force of the first fixing part pressing the wound material.

[0078] The manufacturing method of the electrode assembly according to the present invention can be explained by citing the description of the manufacturing apparatus of the electrode assembly.

[0079] While the present invention has been described above with reference to preferred embodiments, it will be understood that those skilled in the art can make various modifications and variations to the present invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention as set forth in the following claims.
