Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to the field of cosmetic formulations and personal care products. Specifically, the present invention extends to the field of cosmetic adhesives that can be used on the body for fashion and other fashion-related purposes.

Background Art

[0002] Many cosmetic adhesives are water-insoluble. These adhesives have excellent adhesion properties and are resistant to sweat and moisture, but cannot be removed from the skin or fabric with water alone. They require a solvent or it is impossible to wash certain textile products without damage. Examples include latex adhesives and acrylic emulsions.

[0003] Water-soluble adhesives are usually based on vinyl pyrrolidone (VP) / vinyl acetate (VA) copolymers, polyvinyl acetate or polyvinyl alcohol. They may also contain solvents (ethanol, isopropanol, and / or water) and glycerin. Carbomer is employed as a thickener, but this must be neutralized with a base (aminomethylpropanol) and water is required to dissolve the thickener (which increases the drying time and limits the addition of waterproofing agents). These adhesives can be removed with water, but have minimal resistance to sweat and moisture. A water-soluble sweat-resistant adhesive containing an adipic acid / diglycol cross-polymer as a waterproofing agent is available, but this additive reduces water solubility and requires additional effort to remove from fabric. Furthermore, the adipic acid / diglycol cross-polymer is insoluble in water and isopropyl alcohol, which may cause stability problems in the product.

[0004] Any reference to prior art does not admit the level of prior art and common general knowledge. A particular reference to prior art does not indicate that the prior art is common general knowledge or known to a person skilled in the art.

[0005] The object of the present invention is to provide a cosmetic adhesive that improves at least some of the drawbacks of the prior art or provides a useful commercial alternative at least to the prior art formulations.

[0019] In a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a cosmetic adhesive for use in adhering at least a fabric or textile product to a user's skin, the method comprising: - applying a composition containing precipitated silica gel and a cross-polymer of trimethylpentanediol, adipic acid, and glycerin; - adhering the fabric or textile product to the skin; - dissolving the adhesive in water and washing it off.

Mode for Carrying Out the Invention

[0020] [Example 1] Tests were conducted using isopropanol and various waterproofing agents. TruProtect® Sun was obtained from Trulux Pty (Australia).

[0021] All other waterproofing agents were manufactured by Inolex Chemical, Philadelphia, USA, and supplied by A S Harrison & Co Pty (Sydney, Australia).

[0022] Method: 0.5 g of the waterproofing agent was placed in a 20 mL glass vial, and 3.28 g of isopropanol was added. The mixture was vigorously stirred by hand using a metal spatula. The following waterproofing agents were used: a. Lexfilm® Spray (polyester-10 and propylene glycol dibenzoate).

[0023] b. Lexorez® 100MB (cross-polymer of adipic acid / diglycol) c. Lexorez® 200MB (cross-polymer of trimethylpentanediol / adipic acid / glycerin) d. TruProtect (registered trademark) Sun (polyester-7, neopentyl glycol diheptanoate) e. Lexfilm (registered trademark) Sun Natural (capryloyl glycerin / sebacic acid copolymer).

[0024] The clarity and stability of all formulations were acceptable, but formulation (c) was the best. Based on this, Lexorez 200MB was selected for the next evaluation.

[0025] Lexorez (registered trademark) 100MB and Lexorez (registered trademark) 200MB are proprietary formulations manufactured by Inolex Chemical in Philadelphia, USA. These consist of cross-polymers of trimethylpentanediol / adipic acid / glycerin with different degrees of cross-linking. The preparation and use of these are described in US Patent Nos. 5,833,961 (Patent Document 1) and 5,989,527 (Patent Document 2), which are hereby incorporated by reference into this specification.

[0026] [Example 2] The following exemplary formulations all contain a VP / VA copolymer, glycerin, and a preservative. Isopropanol is used as a solvent in Formulation 1. Formulation 2 contains a conventional water-soluble thickener (xanthan gum) and contains water as a solvent. Formulation 3 uses isopropanol as a solvent and silica as a thickener. Silica can thicken alcohol-based formulations that do not contain water. Furthermore, Formulation 3 contains Lexorez® 200MB (trimethylpentanediol / adipic acid / glycerin copolymer) as a waterproofing agent. This is soluble and stable in an isopropanol solvent. Silica gel can absorb moisture after application and thus functions as a second waterproofing agent. The VP / VA copolymer mentioned is Luviskol VA64P manufactured by BASF, which consists of a polymer containing acetic acid, vinyl ester, and 1-ethenyl-2-pyrrolidone. Xanthan gum is Rheocare® XGN manufactured by BASF. The precipitated silica was obtained from New Directions Australia. When silica is required in the method described below, it is also possible to use fumed silica at a low concentration or substitute a mixture of two types of silica powder.

[0027] The trimethylpentanediol / adipic acid / glycerin copolymer (Lexorez® MB200) is manufactured by Inolex and obtained from A S Harrison. Glycerin (palm-free), phenoxyethanol / ethylhexylglycerin, and Geogard ECT (preservative) were obtained from Trulux.

[0028] The water is deionized water and was prepared in-house. Isopropanol (Hypergrade for liquid chromatography (LC)) was obtained from ChemSupply Pty.

[0029]

Table 1

[0030] Formulation 1: A 60 g batch was prepared. All the components were placed in a 125 mL bottle and mixed by hand using a metal spatula for 2 minutes. The mixture was clear after 15 hours at room temperature.

[0031] Formulation 2: A 50 g batch was prepared. The VP / VA copolymer and xanthan gum were dry-mixed in the bottle using a metal spatula. Next, the liquid components were added and the mixture was mixed by hand using a metal spatula for 2 minutes. The mixture slightly heated up during mixing. The mixture was clear after 15 hours at room temperature (see Figure 1).

[0032] Formulation 3: A 50 g batch was prepared. The VP / VA copolymer and silica were dry-mixed in the bottle using a metal spatula. The trimethylpentanediol / adipic acid / glycerin copolymer (Lexorez 200MB) and isopropanol were mixed by hand using a metal spatula in a 125 mL bottle until the mixture became clear. Thereafter, the liquid components were added to the bottle and the contents were mixed by hand using a metal spatula for 2 minutes. After 15 hours at room temperature, the mixture was homogeneous but semi-transparent (due to silica gel) and no precipitation of solids was observed.

[0033] Table 2 shows the evaluation results of three formulation examples. Due to the viscosity of Formulation Example 3, the consistency and processability are optimal. Furthermore, the combination of the VA / VP copolymer, silica gel, and the trimethylpentanediol / adipic acid / glycerin copolymer provides an optimal balance between durability, sweat resistance, water resistance, and the performance of washing the product off the skin or textile products using water.
