[0002] This disclosure relates to the field of flavors or cosmetics. More specifically, the present invention relates to liquid compositions comprising a compound of formula (I) and / or a compound of formula (II), a carvone-containing oil, and optionally a solvent. The disclosure further relates to the use of such compositions in consumer products, such as flavored products and body care products, to give some examples.
[0003] Background technology Sensory information about the chemical composition of the external environment can be provided by taste and sensory systems found throughout the animal kingdom, from simple metazoans to the most complex vertebrates. Such sensory information can include not only tastes such as sweetness, but also sensations of coldness.
[0004] Menthol modulates TRPM8 receptors in a way that produces a cooling sensation in the mouth. Therefore, natural products containing menthol, such as mint extracts, tend to provide a cooling effect in the mouth. For this same reason, menthol is often used as an ingredient in non-extracted caries flavorings where a cooling effect is desired. However, menthol can have a bitter or astringent taste, which some users may find objectionable.
[0005] Certain synthetic compounds known as cooling-enhancing compounds can be used to enhance the cooling effect of menthol, allowing for a decrease in menthol concentration and the resulting reduction of undesirable astringency or bitterness. Due to the potency of these cooling-enhancing compounds, they are typically diluted in solvents, particularly those approved for use in consumer products for application to mucous membranes or skin. However, such compounds are solids with low solubility in the most common flavor and cosmetic solvents at room temperature and atmospheric pressure.
[0006] Sweetness is the most commonly perceived taste when consuming foods rich in sugars. Caloric sweeteners such as sucrose and fructose are archetypal examples of sweetening substances. Caloric sweeteners are a significant contributing factor to the prevalence of metabolic disorders and related conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. While various calorie-free and low-calorie alternatives exist, many consumers do not perceive them as suitable substitutes, as they are merely present in foods or beverages, for example. Many such consumers may perceive unpleasant off-flavors, including astringency, bitterness, and metallic and licorice-like tastes.
[0007] Similar to the cooling approach, flavor-modifying compounds, such as sweetness-enhancing compounds, can be used to offer alternative approaches to overcome some of the adoption challenges faced by low-calorie sweeteners. Such compounds can be used in combination with sucrose or fructose to enhance sweetness, thereby enabling the use of smaller amounts of such calorie sweeteners in a variety of food or beverage products. However, like cooling-enhancing compounds, some sweetness-enhancing compounds are solids that are difficult to handle and incorporate into consumer products because they have low solubility in the most common flavor and cosmetic solvents and are too potent to be used in undiluted form.
[0008] Therefore, there is a continuous need for solvents suitable for solubilizing the above-mentioned types of sensory-enhancing compounds in order to provide these compounds in more convenient diluted forms.
