[0001] Concerning combination greeting cards. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0002] <Background> The greeting card industry is a competitive industry in which attempts to create new greeting cards are constantly being made. However, the greeting card industry suffers from several problems that seem to be inherent to the industry. For example, after a person receives greeting cards, they are usually discarded immediately and the messages contained in the greeting cards are lost, forgotten or ignored. Even when greeting cards are preserved, they are usually stored in boxes or other protective cases because traditional materials (such as paper) are relatively fragile for everyday use. Thus, the typical greeting card has limited effectiveness as a long-lasting method of communication of emotions between individuals. There is a need for new greeting cards that have not only current functional utility but also inherent gift value that is maintained so that the message originally conveyed is preserved. [Means for solving the problem]

[0011] <Detailed Description of the Invention> The present disclosure relates to greeting cards and may be applied to one or more sides of such cards. Greeting cards generally have a substrate and at least one gemstone, and may additionally include one or more electronic components. The substrate may be, for example, a base metal or metal composition, and the gemstone may be, for example, a precious or semi-precious stone embedded in the substrate. The electronic components may be, for example, a capacitive touch element (or other activation button), a display screen, a built-in speaker, and other such elements. FIG. 1 depicts one side of an exemplary greeting card having a display screen (1), a display activation button (2), and a substrate (3).
[0012] The substrate typically comprises a metal or metal composition, but may also comprise other durable materials that can be used with other elements of the disclosed invention, and may additionally have their own inherent value. The durability of the substrate is important so that the greeting card can be stored without fear of damage, unlike conventional greeting cards. For example, conventional greeting cards made of paper must be handled carefully when stored, and even then, being fundamentally organic materials, they will decay or be damaged over time. Unlike conventional greeting cards, the greeting cards of the present disclosure can be presented, worn, or kept in a wallet, for example, without worrying about damage to the greeting card.
[0013] For example, in a preferred embodiment, the substrate includes titanium or a titanium alloy, but the substrate is not limited thereto. The substrate must be oxidation and corrosion resistant, and preferably exhibits good strength, including yield strength, compressive strength, tensile strength, and impact strength. Titanium, including titanium alloys, is a preferred durable substrate because it has the highest tensile strength-to-density ratio of any metallic element, in addition to being oxidation and corrosion resistant. The substrate can include any of the following specifically non-limiting metals, including alloys thereof: aluminum, brass, chromium, cobalt, iron, Inconel, manganese, molybdenum, steel, titanium, tungsten, vanadium, related compositions, and combinations thereof. In particular, titanium can be alloyed with several other metals to produce strong, lightweight alloys. For example, titanium can be alloyed with iron, aluminum, vanadium, molybdenum, and several other metals. In certain embodiments, the substrate may have an inherent value. In some embodiments, the substrate includes a precious metal, such as silver, gold, platinum, or an alloy thereof. Substrates may also include composite materials, including reinforced plastics, fibers (such as aramid), metal composites, and ceramic composites. An example of a suitable composite material is carbon fiber. While such substrates are desirable, there are several challenges to embedding gemstones and other decorative features into them. For example, embedding diamonds into titanium, especially thin titanium, requires unique techniques and skills and is particularly challenging.
[0014] The substrate may be surface coated or anodized. For example, the substrate may be PVD plated, such as black PVD plated titanium, silver plated, such as silver plated titanium, or gold plated, such as gold plated titanium. Other platings may include, for example, nickel, palladium, platinum, rhodium, zinc, related compositions, and combinations thereof. Non-metallic surface coatings are possible, including polymeric, plastic, resinous, acrylic, vinyl, paint, or related coatings. For example, titanium may be anodized to create many different colors of titanium, such as bronze, blue, blue-white, yellow, magenta, cyan, and green titanium, or combinations thereof. However, while a variety of surface coatings and colorings are desirable, the size and dimensions of the greeting cards of the present invention present particular challenges to the coating and coloring process, as standard jewelry equipment and procedures may not be suitable. It has been found that the typical process employed by lapidaries for jewelry results in uneven coloring and blemishes on the greeting cards, which is undesirable.
[0015] The substrate, optionally with a surface coating, may also be finished. For example, the substrate may be polished, buffed, brushed, ground, or blasted, such as microbead blasted. Polishing usually refers to more aggressive buffing, which usually results in a smoother finish. Finishes can range from rough to smooth, depending on the desired aesthetic, and may be patterned, such as striped patterns. For high tensile strength metals such as titanium, aluminum oxide (e.g., white or gray aluminum oxide) or related compositions such as chromium oxide are typically used. For brittle materials, silicon carbide is typically used. A mirror finish usually requires abrasives and buffs, usually using high speed polishers.
[0016] Greeting cards may be engraved or etched with, for example, words or phrases, or other symbols or images, such as designs. These may be customized for a particular consumer, for example, at the customer's or purchaser's request. Engraving may be done by many means known in the art, such as mechanical means using an air engraver or drill bits (e.g., tungsten carbide or diamond coated drill bits), laser engraving, chemical etching (e.g., application of acid), engraving with enamel, photochemical etching, and related methods. Engraving methods may be used to create guilloche patterns on greeting cards. The engraving process is guided by a computer program or set of readable / executable instructions stored on a non-transitory medium.
[0017] The substrate may be embedded with at least one item of intrinsic value, such as a gemstone, or other physical item that has inherent value or attached meaning. The gemstone is typically a precious or semi-precious stone, although any suitable gemstone may be used. In one exemplary embodiment, the gemstone includes a diamond, but the gemstone is not so limited. The diamond may be natural, treated, or synthetic. Methods for producing treated and synthetic diamonds are known to those skilled in the art. In addition to pink, the diamond may be white (natural diamond) or other colors, such as, but not limited to, yellow diamonds, blue diamonds, champagne diamonds, black diamonds, purple diamonds, green diamonds, brown diamonds, red diamonds, gray diamonds, olive diamonds, orange diamonds, and combinations thereof.
[0018] Gemstones may include any known gemstone including, but not limited to: afghanite, agate, alexandrite, amazonite, amber, amethyst, ametrine, ammolite, andalusite, andesine, apatite, aquamarine, aventurine, azurite, bastnasite, benitoite, beryl, bloodstone, calcite, carnelian, cavansite, chalcedony, charoite, chrome diopside, chrysoberyl, chrysocolla, chrysoprase, citrine, coral, and crinoid. , Danburite, Diamond (Pink Diamond, etc.), Diaspore, Diapotase, Druzy, Emerald, Eudialyte, Feldspar, Fire Agate, Fluorite, Fuchsite, Garnet, Hackmanite, Heliodor, Hematite, Hiddenite, Howlite, Iolite, Ironstone, Jade, Jasper, Kunzite, Kyanite, Labradorite, Lapis Lazuli, Larimar, Lava, Lazurite, Lepidolite ite, magnetite, malachite, meteorite, moldavite, moonstone, morganite, obsidian, onyx, opal / opalite, orthoclase, pearl (such as akoya or black pearl), peridot, petalite, pitersite, prasiolite, prehnite, pyrite, quartz, rhodochrosite, rhodonite, rhyolite, rubellite, ruby, sapphire, scapolite, selenite, septarian, seraphinite, serpentine, shell stone, sillimanite, sodalite, spectrolite, sphalerite, sphene, spinel, spodumene, stictite, sugilite, sunstone, tanzanite, tekite, tiffany stone, tiger eye, tiger iron, topaz, tourmaline, tremolite, tryphane, turkeyenite, turquoise, variscite, verdite, zebra rock, zircon, zoisite, and combinations thereof.
[0019] In a preferred embodiment, the greeting card includes a plurality of gemstones that are embedded into one or more surfaces of the substrate (e.g., one or more faces and / or edges of the substrate) in a predetermined pattern, e.g., an image or message, as depicted in FIG. 2-15. Individual gemstones within the plurality of gemstones may include different gemstones. And, the greeting card may have a message engraved into the card, a message formed by gemstones (e.g., diamonds) embedded into the substrate, or a combination of both. In addition to being embedded into one or more faces of the greeting card, or as an alternative, individual gemstones may be embedded along one or more edges of the greeting card, as depicted in FIG. 2-4. In certain preferred embodiments, one or more portions of one or more edges are embedded with gemstones. In one exemplary embodiment, one or two entire edges are embedded with gemstones. In certain embodiments, the greeting card may have one or more protruding tabs from one or more edges, in which gemstones may be embedded, as depicted in FIG. 2. One advantage of embedding gemstones along one or more edges is that such a feature is visible even when the greeting card is stored in a wallet, purse, or carrying case, so long as one edge is visible. For example, a greeting card of the present invention stored in a wallet will have at least one edge visible whenever the wallet is opened, even if the card is not removed. This not only serves to remind the owner of the sentimental (and intrinsic) value of the greeting card, even if the greeting card is not removed, but also helps the owner quickly find the greeting card among other items stored in a wallet, purse, etc.
[0020] The gemstones may be of any dimension, size, and weight that allows them to be permanently embedded in the greeting card. In a preferred embodiment, the gemstones are sized such that they do not protrude above the plane of the substrate in which they are embedded. In an alternative embodiment, it may be desirable to have gemstones sized such that when embedded along the edge of the greeting card, they protrude above the surface of the edge. The gemstones may be of any dimension that allows them to fit and be embedded in the greeting card, but in a preferred embodiment, the gemstones are between about 1.0 mm and 1.1 mm in diameter.
[0021] The greeting card may include one or more electronic components. The electronic components may be completely contained within the greeting card or may be exposed (partially or completely) on one or more faces (e.g., one or more sides) of the greeting card. The electronic components may be interconnected (or operably linked) via wiring or circuitry and may additionally be connected to a power source, e.g., a battery. The wiring and / or circuitry may be completely contained within the greeting card or may be exposed (partially or completely) on the face of the greeting card. Exemplary electronic components include an activation button and a display screen (see FIG. 1). The display screen may include an LCD screen, an LED screen (including OLED), or an electronic ink (E-ink) display, and may or may not be backlit, depending on the type of screen. The activation button may be a physical button that is activated when an external force is applied, or may be a capacitive touch screen. The activation button may be interconnected / operably linked to any number of additional electronic components described herein.
[0022] Other electronic components may include antennas, speakers, headphone jacks, NFC devices, RFID tags / chips, Wi-Fi dongles, microphones, Bluetooth adapters / dongles, BLE, solar cells, fingerprint sensors, LED lights / flashlights, lasers, camera lenses, display screens, and related components.
[0023] In particular, the greeting card may utilize BLE technology, which may enable the greeting card to communicate with other electronic devices, such as, for example, mobile devices. The mobile device may be, for example, a mobile phone, tablet, laptop, or other computing device. In some embodiments, the mobile device includes software or executable instructions, such as in the form of an app, that allows a user or third party to modify or interact with the greeting card. For example, a greeting card having BLE technology and a display screen (e.g., but not necessarily, an electronic ink screen) may enable a user or third party to send, change, or modify messages on the greeting card's display screen using software included on the user's or third party's mobile device. In some embodiments, the greeting card includes a cellular data receiver or transmitter, which enables the greeting card to receive commands and messages, including text messages, or other custom indications on the display screen. Such commands, messages, and indications may be received via SMS text messages, a mobile application compatible with the greeting card, or other messaging capabilities from a mobile phone or computer.
[0024] The greeting card may have a memory storage device, such as a read-only memory (ROM) with preloaded executable files, or a random access memory (RAM), or alternatively a flash memory drive, and the greeting card may further include an I / O port, such as a Universal Serial Bus (USB, including micro USB, USBc, USB 3.0, etc.) port, a Thunderbolt port, or related interface. In such an embodiment, the greeting card may double as a storage drive for the user, or may be preloaded with additional greetings, messages, or files for the recipient of the greeting card. For example, the greeting card may be programmed to automatically display a greeting at a particular time, play a particular song through the speaker when an activation button is pressed, or the user may record a voice message into the microphone, which is played through the speaker when the activation button is pressed. This may be combined with a display screen, which may or may not also include customized or automated messages. A preferred embodiment of the greeting card has a novel feature that allows for the receipt of new greeting messages sent and received live in real time. Due to the diamonds / gems and other value environment inherent to the card, the new greeting may be as fresh and personal as the original card. Executable files preloaded on the greeting card may also serve to run various electronic components and may be customized according to the needs of the sender or user.
[0025] The greeting card may additionally include a power source, such as a battery. The battery may be fully contained within the greeting card or may be exposed (partially or completely) on the surface of the greeting card. The battery may be a rechargeable battery or a non-rechargeable battery, such as a watch battery. The battery may be interconnected to any number of electronic components described herein. Common rechargeable batteries include, but are not limited to, lead acid gel batteries, lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries, such as, but not limited to, lithium ion polymer batteries, nickel cadmium (NiCd or Nicad) batteries, and nickel metal hydride batteries. Common non-rechargeable batteries include, but are not limited to, alkaline batteries, zinc carbon batteries, lithium batteries, mercury batteries, silver oxide batteries, and zinc air batteries. If the greeting card includes a rechargeable battery, the greeting card may (but is not necessarily) further include a charging port, which may or may not be a USB charging port. Alternatively, the greeting card may have electronic components for wireless induction (Qi) charging, or may have a solar cell as disclosed above.
[0026] Greeting cards may also be made from a single solid substrate into which all other functionality is embedded or attached. Greeting cards may also be made with two or more substrate sections that are affixed together to accommodate other functionality. For example, electronic components may be inserted into cavities in a single substrate, or electronic components may be housed between two or more substrate sections.
[0027] The greeting card may additionally have a means for attaching or attaching the greeting card to another object. For example, as shown in FIG. 15, the greeting card may have one or more openings through which a strap or hook may be inserted. The openings may be through the surface of the greeting card or through protruding tabs. In this manner, the greeting card may be used as a decorative tag for a handbag, wallet, briefcase, luggage, etc. Similarly, the greeting card may be hung decoratively in a home or office, or, for example, the greeting card may be worn by a user and attached to clothing. Additionally, the greeting card may have one or more openings, for example, a thread or a chain or similar material may be threaded through the greeting card to hang the greeting card. In another embodiment, the greeting card may have a built-in magnet, which allows the greeting card to be magnetically attached to a ferromagnetic surface. In another alternative embodiment, the substrate may include a ferromagnetic metal, which allows the greeting card to be magnetically attached to a magnetic surface.
[0028] The overall shape of the greeting card may be any geometric or non-geometric shape. In a preferred embodiment, the shape of the greeting card is a rectangle with rounded corners. In some embodiments, the greeting card may have protrusions (e.g., tabs) on the sides of the greeting card (see, e.g., Figures 2A, 2B). In some embodiments, the protrusions may have at least one gem embedded therein, for example, as shown in Figure 2C. The geometric shape of the greeting card (regardless of length and width, thickness) may be, for example, a rectangle, a square, a triangle (square, isosceles, oblique, right, obtuse, acute), a rhombus, a parallelogram, a trapezoid, a kite, a trapezoid, a pentagon, a hexagon, a heptagon, an octagon, a nonagon, a decagon, a circle, an ellipse, a crescent, or any other regular or irregular polygon. The edges of the greeting card may be flat or rounded. In some embodiments, the greeting card is generally in the shape of a regular polygon, such as a rectangle, and has one or more protruding tabs on one or more sides of the greeting card. In a preferred embodiment, the greeting card is a flat shape of the aforementioned dimensions having only two sides (i.e., a front and a back). In other embodiments, the greeting card can be folded or bent, such as a traditional paper greeting card shape (e.g., two rectangular panels connected on one side) or other multi-dimensional shapes.
[0029] The dimensions of a greeting card are not necessarily limited by a maximum dimension. However, the greeting card is preferably thick enough to withstand normal forces and has a length and width similar to other types of cards carried in a wallet or purse, but slightly smaller (so as to be easily distinguished from such items), for ease of carrying in a wallet. Alternatively, the greeting card is preferably similar in length and width to luggage tags, for ease of attachment to a handbag, wallet, or key chain, or for ease of display. Being smaller in length and width dimensions than a typical credit card, and having a different look and feel, greeting cards are easily distinguishable from other cards carried in a wallet or purse. This allows the holder to quickly find the greeting card and to remove or not remove it as needed. The difference in size (and look and feel) makes the greeting card more noticeable, and even when not removed, the owner notices it, reminding the owner of the sentimental (and inherent) value of the greeting card. Typically, but not necessarily, the dimensions of the greeting card will be smaller than conventional greeting cards. For example, but not necessarily, the greeting card may have a first dimension (length or width) of about 25 to about 150 mm, about 50 to about 125 mm, about 50 to about 100 mm, about 50 to about 75 mm, about 75 to about 100 mm, about 60 to about 80 mm, about 80 to about 100 mm, about 70 to about 80 mm, about 65 to about 85 mm, about 70 to about 90 mm, and any range therebetween. Exemplary greeting cards have a first dimension in the range of about 73 to about 85 mm. The greeting card may have a second dimension (length or width depending on the first dimension) of about 15 to about 100 mm, about 20 to about 80 mm, about 25 to about 75 mm, about 25 to about 60 mm, about 25 to about 50 mm, about 40 to about 60 mm, about 45 to about 55 mm, about 50 mm to about 55 mm, about 50 mm to about 60 mm, and any intervening range therein. An exemplary greeting card has a second dimension of about 54 mm.The thickness of the greeting card is not particularly limited, but may be about 0.5 to about 5.0 mm, about 0.75 to about 4.0 mm, about 1.0 to about 1.5 mm, about 0.75 to about 1.5 mm, about 1.0 mm to about 2.0 mm, about 0.75 to about 2.0 mm, about 1.5 to about 2.0 mm, and any range therebetween. In a preferred embodiment, the greeting card has a thickness of about 1.2 mm to about 1.3 mm, more specifically about 1.25 mm. The thickness, based on the composition of the substrate, is preferably such that the greeting card will be able to withstand normal handling without deformation, but is preferably thin enough so as not to be undesirably heavy or take up too much space in a wallet or purse.
