[0040]

[0050] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0004] Embodiments are directed to a system for removing contaminants from storm water. Referring to Figures 1-8, diagrams of a storm water treatment device according to an embodiment are provided.

[0041]

[0051] The stormwater treatment device 100 may define a chamber including an inlet 105, an outlet 110, a wall 115, a vertical baffle 120, one or more diverters 130, and an outlet control diverter 135. In one embodiment, stormwater carrying pollutants may enter the inlet 105 and flow to a lower portion 150 of the stormwater treatment device 100. In one embodiment, depending on the inflow velocity of the stormwater, the stormwater may hit the vertical baffle 120, slow down, and flow downward.

[0042]

[0052] In one embodiment, the distance of the vertical baffle 120 from the inlet 105 may be a balance between having more elements in the enhanced sedimentation device 125 and having openings that allow cleaning and inspection. A shorter distance may improve performance but may make cleaning and inspection more difficult. Additionally, a shorter distance may increase scouring.

[0043]

[0053] In one embodiment, the vertical baffle 120 may be positioned and / or sized such that the top of the vertical baffle 120 is at a height above the invert of the inlet 105 such that at flows above the design flow rate, stormwater will flow over the top of the vertical baffle 120.

[0044]

[0054] The vertical baffle 120 may divide the chamber defined by the storm water treatment device 100 into an inlet side and an outlet side.

[0045]

[0055] In one embodiment, the bottom of the vertical baffle 120 is positioned to optimize the flow of water within the lower portion 150 of the storm water treatment device 100 and may be positioned depending on the size of the storm water treatment device 100. In one embodiment, the bottom of the vertical baffle 120 may be at least 2 feet (60.96 cm) from the bottom of the storm water treatment device 100. Other mounting locations may be used as needed and / or desired.

[0046]

[0056] The stormwater may continue from the lower portion 150 of the stormwater treatment device 100 to an upper portion 155 of the stormwater treatment device. In one embodiment, an enhanced sedimentation device 125, such as a lamella tube, may be disposed between the lower portion 150 and the upper portion 155.

[0047]

[0057] In embodiments, the enhanced sedimentation device 125 may comprise multiple sheets, each formed with angled ridges. In one embodiment, the sheets may be oriented such that the ridges of adjacent sheets are parallel to each other, forming a tube that is angled relative to the vertical. In another embodiment, the sheets may be oriented such that the ridges of adjacent sheets are perpendicular to each other, creating a series of serpentine paths.

[0048]

[0058] In one embodiment, the bottom of the enhanced sedimentation device 125 may be above the bottom of the vertical baffle 120 .

[0049]

[0059] One or more diverters 130, 131, and 132 may be provided in the lower portion 150 of the storm water treatment device 100 to divert the flow of raw storm water so that suspended contaminants have more time to fall out of suspension. In one embodiment, the diverters 130, 131, and / or 132 may also prevent the incoming raw storm water from resuspending contaminants.

[0050]

[0060] In one embodiment, the flow splitters 130, 131, and / or 132 may be plates. In one embodiment, the plates may be flat. In one embodiment, the second flow splitter (131) may be attached to the wall 115 at the angle of the lamella tube such that the centerline of the second flow splitter coincides with the centerline of the wall 115. The third flow splitter 132 may be attached to the wall 115 opposite the second flow splitter 131 such that the centerline of the third flow splitter coincides with the centerline of the wall 115. Two or more of the flow splitters may be manufactured as a single piece. The sagitta of each flow splitter may be between 3 inches (7.62 cm) and 30% of the distance to the opposite wall or baffle. For example, a 48 inch (121.92 cm) diameter tank would have an upper limit of 14 inches (35.56 cm).

[0051]

[0061] The outlet control diverter 135 will further throttle the flow of the storm water before it can exit the outlet 110. In one embodiment, the outlet control diverter may prevent the storm water from flowing directly from the lower section 150 to the upper section 155 and out the outlet 110 without changing flow direction. The outlet control diverter 135 will also cause suspended contaminants to fall out of suspension.

[0052]

[0062] The outlet control diverter 135 may be flat and attached to the wall 115 below the outlet 110 such that the plate of the outlet control diverter 135 has the same centerline as the outlet 110 and the outlet control diverter 135 forms an angle of 45 to 135 degrees from the horizontal.

[0053]

[0063] The outlet control diverter 135 may include a horizontal bottom piece and two vertical side pieces that are the same height as the invert of the outlet 110. The first vertical side piece may protrude from one side of the outlet 110 and be substantially parallel to a vertical plane that bisects the outlet 110. The second vertical side piece may be substantially perpendicular to the first vertical side piece and parallel to a tangent to the wall 115 taken at the centerline of the outlet. The bottom piece and the two vertical side pieces form an opening through which water can reach the outlet 110. In one embodiment, each vertical side piece may protrude at least 4 inches (10.16 cm) from the horizontal side piece.

[0054]

[0064] The dimensions of the outlet control diverter 135 and its portions may vary based on the size of the storm water treatment device 100, but in one embodiment, the first vertical side piece may extend at least 6 inches (15.24 cm) from one side of the outlet 110 and the second vertical side piece may be at least 8 inches (20.32 cm) in length. The dimensions will vary depending on the size of the storm water treatment device 100, and generally larger devices will have larger elements and smaller devices will have smaller elements. In one embodiment, the second vertical side piece may be curved. The size of the side piece may be selected to maximize the path length to the outlet 110 while still approximating the size of the outlet 110.

[0055]

[0065] In one embodiment, the maximum dimension perpendicular to the vertical plane that bisects the inlet 105 can be less than or equal to the maximum dimension parallel to the vertical plane that bisects the inlet 105. For example, the length between the inlet 105 and the outlet 110 can be greater than the width of the chamber. This may be useful, for example, if the chamber is rectangular in shape. The angle between the vertical plane that bisects the inlet 105 and the vertical plane that bisects the outlet 110 can be between 45 and 315 degrees. Other angles may be used as needed and / or desired.

[0056]

[0066] 7 and 8, exemplary details regarding the enhanced sedimentation device 125 are provided according to embodiments. The enhanced sedimentation device 125 may include a plurality of lamella tubes. The lamella tubes may have any suitable shape, and in one embodiment, as shown in FIG. 7, the lamella tubes may have a hexagonal shape. Other tube shapes such as rectangular, parallelogram, circular, etc. may be used as well. In one embodiment, the dimensions of each tube may be selected to minimize the height of each channel provided by the tube, i.e., to minimize the sedimentation separation distance.

[0057]

[0067] In one embodiment, the lamella tubes of the enhanced sedimentation device 125 may be positioned at an angle from the horizontal. In one embodiment, water flowing through the enhanced sedimentation device 125 must reverse direction at least twice to enter the opening of the outlet control diverter 135. For example, storm water reverses direction as it travels from the lower section 150 to the upper section 155 through the enhanced sedimentation device 125, and reverses direction again as it travels from the enhanced sedimentation device 125 to the outlet 110. The outlet diverter 135 would force yet another change of direction.

[0058]

[0068] In one embodiment, the angle may be selected to optimize sedimentation versus tube self-cleaning in the enhanced sedimentation device 125. For example, the angle may be between 45 and 75 degrees. Other angles may be used as needed and / or desired.

[0059]

[0069] In one embodiment, the lamella tubes of the enhanced sedimentation device 125 may be disposed at different angles relative to the horizontal. For example, a first subset of the lamella tubes may be disposed at a first angle relative to the horizontal, a second subset of the lamella tubes may be disposed at a second angle relative to the horizontal, etc. The angle(s) may be selected as needed and / or desired.

[0060]

[0070] 2A, the vertical baffle 120 may include one or more vanes 140 extending down from the top of the vertical baffle 120 at the inlet side to help prevent vortex formation in the inlet flow. For example, the vanes 140 may extend 12-36 inches (30.48-91.44 cm) below the top of the vertical baffle 120 and 1-5 inches (2.54-12.7 cm) away from the baffle. The dimensions of the vanes 140 may vary depending on the size of the storm water treatment device 100. In one embodiment, at least one vane 140 may be positioned at least 3 inches (7.62 cm) from the point where the baffle 120 meets the wall of the storm water treatment device 100, and the other vane 140 may be positioned at least 3 inches (7.62 cm) from the point where the other side of the baffle 120 meets the wall of the storm water treatment device 100. Any arrangement of the vanes 140 may be symmetrical about a vertical plane that bisects the vertical baffle 120 and is perpendicular to the vertical baffle 120.

[0061]

[0071] In another embodiment, as shown in FIG. 2B, the vanes 140 are provided in a horizontal orientation.

[0062]

[0072] The stormwater treatment device 100 may be configured to redirect the flow of water within the stormwater treatment device 100 several times. The purpose of the redirection is to optimize the time the stormwater spends within the stormwater treatment device 100. This redirection uses the volume within the stormwater treatment device 100 as efficiently as possible, since gravity settling takes time and the dimensions of the stormwater treatment device 100 may limit the volume and flow rate.

[0063]

[0073] 9 and 10, isometric and cross-sectional views, respectively, of a stormwater treatment device according to another embodiment are provided. The stormwater treatment device 900 may define a chamber including an inlet 905, an outlet 910, a wall 915, an inner chamber wall 960, and a support 965. In one embodiment, stormwater carrying pollutants may enter the inlet 905 and fall into the outer chamber 950 of the stormwater treatment device 900. The stormwater may then flow through the enhanced sedimentation device 925 into the inner chamber 955 of the stormwater treatment device 900 before exiting via the outlet 910.

[0064]

[0074] It should be appreciated that in an alternative embodiment, the enhanced sedimentation device 925 may be located within an outer chamber 950 of the stormwater treatment device, with the stormwater being provided to the inner chamber 965 of the stormwater treatment device 900 via the inlet 905. An outlet 910 is located in the outer chamber 950, such that once the stormwater has flowed through the enhanced sedimentation device 925, it exits the stormwater treatment device 900 via the outlet 910.

[0065]

[0075] The enhanced sedimentation device 925 may be similar to the enhanced sedimentation device 125 described above.

[0066]

[0076] Referring to FIG. 11, a method for removing contaminants from storm water is disclosed according to one embodiment.

[0067]

[0077] In step 1105, storm water carrying pollutants flows into the inlet side of the storm water treatment device and spreads out, reducing the fluid velocity.

[0068]

[0078] In step 1110, the stormwater flows into a lower portion of the stormwater treatment device unless the flow exceeds a particular design flow rate. For example, if the flow is above a particular design flow rate, an amount of the stormwater proportional to the amount of flow above the particular design flow rate will flow over the baffle directly into the upper portion of the stormwater treatment device, while the remainder of the flow will flow into the lower portion of the stormwater treatment device.

[0069]

[0079] In step 1115, the storm water flows into the lower section and the contaminants are released from suspension due to gravitational settling. The settled contaminants accumulate within the lower section of the storm water treatment device.

[0070]

[0080] In step 1120, the stormwater changes direction and flows up an enhanced settling device, such as a lamella tube. These tubes provide a shorter settling distance, decreasing the time it takes for particles to settle. This allows smaller particles to settle more quickly. The particles that settle in the enhanced settling device eventually fall into the lower portion of the stormwater treatment device.

[0071]

[0081] In step 1125, the stormwater exits the enhanced sedimentation device and changes direction in an upper portion of the stormwater treatment device.

[0072]

[0082] At step 1130, the storm water reaches the outlet diverter and is allowed to flow out through the outlet. In one embodiment, the outlet diverter may be configured to redirect the storm water again before it exits through the outlet.

[0073]
