Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention relates to a fluorine-containing polymer, a method for producing the same, a water / oil repellent composition, and an article. [Background technology]

[0002] As a method for imparting water and oil repellency to the surface of an article (such as a textile product), a method of treating the article with a water and oil repellent composition containing a fluorine-containing polymer having a unit based on a (meth)acrylate having a perfluoroalkyl group is known. However, the ester bond in the unit based on the (meth)acrylate is easily broken by hydrolysis with an alkali or the like. Therefore, the perfluoroalkyl group is lost from the fluorine-containing polymer, and the water and oil repellency of the article may decrease.

[0003] A water / oil repellent composition containing a fluoropolymer having no units based on a (meth)acrylate having a perfluoroalkyl group is known as a water / oil repellent composition that can provide an article whose water / oil repellency is unlikely to decrease even after exposure to alkaline conditions, etc. As a fluoropolymer having no units based on a (meth)acrylate having a perfluoroalkyl group, a fluoropolymer having units based on (perfluoroalkyl)ethylene is known (Patent Document 1). [0024] As the monomer (b2), a (meth)acrylate is preferred. However, since it is possible to obtain an article whose water and oil repellency is less likely to decrease even after exposure to an alkaline condition, it is preferred that the polymer A does not have a unit based on a (meth)acrylate having a perfluoroalkyl group. [0029] The total proportion of the units (a) and (b1) to all the units constituting the polymer A is preferably 80% by mass or more, more preferably 90% by mass or more, and may be 100% by mass. When the total proportion is equal to or more than the lower limit, an article can be obtained in which the water and oil repellency is further resistant to deterioration even after exposure to alkaline conditions.

[0030] The ratio of each unit is: 1 It can be calculated from the reaction rate of each monomer component by H-NMR and gas chromatography. When the conversion rate of the monomer components to the polymer A is high (e.g., 90% or more) during the production of the polymer A, the ratio of each unit may be calculated based on the charged amount of the monomer components. The conversion rate is calculated from the theoretical mass of polymer A calculated from the amounts of raw materials charged during the production of polymer A and the actual mass of the produced polymer A by calculating the actual mass / theoretical mass×100.

[0031] The Mn of the polymer A is preferably 10,000 or more, more preferably 11,000 or more, and even more preferably 12,000 or more. The Mn of the polymer A is preferably 100,000 or less, more preferably 70,000 or less, and even more preferably 50,000 or less. When the Mn of the polymer A is the above-mentioned lower limit or more, the water and oil repellency, dynamic water repellency, and repeated water immersion resistance of the article treated with the polymer A are more excellent. When the Mn of the polymer A is the above-mentioned upper limit or less, the water dispersibility of the polymer A is more excellent.

[0032] The Mw of the polymer A is preferably 10,000 or more, more preferably 20,000 or more, and even more preferably 30,000 or more. The Mw of the polymer A is preferably 150,000 or less, more preferably 120,000 or less, and even more preferably 100,000 or less. When the Mw of the polymer A is the above-mentioned lower limit or more, the water and oil repellency, dynamic water repellency, and repeated water immersion resistance of the article treated with the polymer A are more excellent. When the Mw of the polymer A is the above-mentioned upper limit or less, the water dispersibility of the polymer A is more excellent.

[0033] The molecular weight distribution (Mw / Mn) of polymer A is preferably 1.0 or more, more preferably 1.3 or more, and even more preferably 1.6 or more. The Mw / Mn of polymer A is preferably 5.0 or less, more preferably 4.5 or less, and even more preferably 4.0 or less. When the Mw / Mn of polymer A is equal to or more than the lower limit, the water / oil repellency, dynamic water repellency, and repeated water immersion resistance of the article treated with polymer A are even more excellent. When the Mw / Mn of polymer A is equal to or less than the upper limit, the water dispersibility of polymer A is even more excellent.

[0034] The glass transition temperature (hereinafter, referred to as "Tg") of polymer A is preferably 0 to 80°C, more preferably 5 to 70°C. When Tg is equal to or higher than the lower limit, the polymer A has better resistance to repeated water immersion. Tg is the midpoint glass transition temperature determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC method) in accordance with JIS K 7121:1987.

[0035] (Mechanism of action) The polymer A described above contains the unit (a), and since the unit (a) has X at the α-position, an article treated with a composition containing polymer A has excellent dynamic water repellency or resistance to repeated immersion in water. The polymer A can also provide an article having excellent dynamic water repellency and resistance to repeated immersion in water. Furthermore, the water and oil repellency of an article treated with a composition containing polymer A is unlikely to decrease even after exposure to alkaline conditions. In addition,

The amount of the dehydrogenation catalyst used may be, for example, CH 2 X-CHX-R f The amount of the halogenation catalyst used in the step A is 0.001 to 0.5 moles per mole of the compound represented by the following formula: When a tertiary amine or an aromatic nitrogen-containing compound is used as the halogenation catalyst, the halogenation catalyst used in the step A can be used as it is as the dehydrogenation catalyst. The reaction temperature in step B is, for example, −10 to 50° C. The reaction time is, for example, 0.5 to 12 hours. Step B is preferably carried out in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor to prevent polymerization of the resulting monomer (a). Examples of the polymerization inhibitor include t-butylcatechol, hydroquinone, hydroquinone monomethyl ether, and phenothiazine. The amount of the polymerization inhibitor used is, for example, CH 2 X-CHX-R f The amount of the compound represented by the formula (I) is 0.003 to 0.1 parts by mass relative to 100 parts by mass of the compound represented by the formula (I). After the dehydrogenation, the monomer (a) is usually recovered from the resulting reaction mixture. To recover the monomer (a), for example, an acid is added to the reaction mixture to adjust the pH to 7 or less, and the mixture is allowed to stand. When the pH-adjusted reaction mixture is allowed to stand, the reaction mixture separates into an oil phase containing the monomer (a) and an aqueous phase. A conventionally known method can be used to purify the monomer (a).

[0040] The proportion of monomer (a) relative to the entire monomer components (i.e., the total of all monomers including monomer (a) and monomer (b)) is preferably in the range of 20 to 60 mol %, more preferably 30 to 50 mol %. When the proportion of monomer (a) is equal to or greater than the lower limit, the article treated with polymer A has better water and oil repellency, dynamic water repellency, and resistance to repeated immersion in water. When the proportion of monomer (a) is equal to or less than the upper limit, the conversion rate in the polymerization reaction of polymer A tends to be higher.

[0041] The proportion of the monomer (b) in the total monomer components is preferably 40 to 80 mol%, more preferably 50 to 70 mol%. If the proportion of the monomer (b) is equal to or greater than the lower limit, the conversion rate in the polymerization reaction is likely to be higher. If the proportion of the monomer (b) is equal to or less than the upper limit, the water / oil repellency, dynamic water repellency, and repeated water immersion resistance of the article treated with the polymer A are more excellent.

[0042] When at least a part of the monomer (b) is the monomer (b1), the ratio of the monomer (b1) to the total monomer components is preferably 40 to 80 mol%, more preferably 50 to 70 mol%. When the ratio of the monomer (b1) is equal to or higher than the lower limit, the conversion rate in the polymerization reaction tends to be higher. When the ratio of the monomer (b1) is equal to or lower than the upper limit, the water / oil repellency, dynamic water repellency, and repeated water immersion resistance of the article treated with the polymer A are more excellent.

[0043] When at least a part of the monomer (b1) is a vinyl halide, the proportion of the vinyl halide relative to the total monomer (b) is preferably 1 to 60 mol%, more preferably 5 to 50 mol%, and even more preferably 10 to 40 mol%. When the proportion of the monomer (b1) is equal to or more than the lower limit, the conversion rate in the polymerization reaction of the polymer A tends to be higher. When the proportion of the monomer (b1) is equal to or less than the upper limit, the water / oil repellency, dynamic water repellency, and repeated water immersion resistance of the article treated with the polymer A are more excellent.

[0044] The proportion of the monomer (b2) in the total monomer components is preferably less than 20% by mass, more preferably less than 10% by mass, and may be 0% by mass. If the proportion of the monomer (b2) is equal to or less than the upper limit, an article can be obtained in which the water and oil repellency is further resistant to deterioration even after exposure to alkaline conditions.

[0045] The total proportion of the monomer (a) and the monomer (b1) to the total monomer components is preferably 80% by mass or more, more preferably 90% by mass or more, and may be 100% by mass. When the total proportion is equal to or more than the lower limit, an article can be obtained in which the water and oil repellency is further resistant to deterioration even after exposure to alkaline conditions.

[0046] Examples of the polymerization initiator include a thermal polymerization initiator, a photopolymerization initiator, a radiation polymerization initiator, a radical polymerization initiator, and an ionic polymerization initiator, and the radical polymerization initiator is preferable. Examples of the radical polymerization initiator include an azo-based polymerization initiator, a peroxide-based polymerization initiator, and a redox-based initiator, which are used depending on the polymerization temperature. The radical polymerization initiator is preferably an azo-based compound, and more preferably a salt of an azo-based compound. The polymerization temperature is preferably 20 to 150°C. The amount of the polymerization initiator added is preferably 0.1 to 5 parts by mass, and more preferably 0.1 to 3 parts by mass, based on 100 parts by mass of the monomer component.

[0047] When polymerizing the monomer components, a molecular weight regulator may be used. Examples of the molecular weight regulator include aromatic compounds, mercaptoalcohols, mercaptocarboxylic acids, and alkyl mercaptans, and more preferably mercaptocarboxylic acids or alkyl mercaptans. Examples of the molecular weight regulator include mercaptoethanol, mercaptopropionic acid, n-octyl mercaptan, n-dodecyl mercaptan, tert-dodecyl mercaptan, stearyl mercaptan, α-methylstyrene dimer (CH 2 =C(Ph)CH 2 C(CH 3 ) 2 Ph, where Ph is a phenyl group. The amount of the molecular weight modifier added is preferably 5 parts by mass or less, more preferably 2 parts by mass or less, and may be 0 part by mass, based on 100 parts by mass of the monomer component.

[0048] Examples of the polymerization method of the monomer component include emulsion polymerization, solution polymerization, suspension polymerization, and bulk polymerization. Among these, emulsion polymerization is preferred. By polymerizing the monomer component by emulsion polymerization, the conversion rate of the monomer component to polymer A can be improved without using a solvent other than the aqueous medium, and the molecular weight (Mn, Mw) of polymer A can be increased.

[0049] In the emulsion polymerization method, for example, the monomer components are polymerized in an emulsion containing an aqueous medium, a monomer component, and a polymerization initiator. The emulsion may contain a surfactant, if necessary. Examples of the aqueous medium include the same aqueous medium as in the water / oil repellent composition described below. Examples of the surfactant include the same surfactants as those in the water / oil repellent composition described below.

[0050] The emulsion can be prepared by mixing an aqueous medium, a monomer component, and, if necessary, a surfactant, dispersing the mixture using a homogenizer, a high-pressure emulsifier, or the like, and then adding a polymerization initiator. The concentration of the monomer component in the emulsion is preferably 20 to 60% by mass, more preferably 30 to 50% by mass. When the concentration of the monomer component in the emulsion is within the above range, the conversion rate of the monomer component to polymer A during polymerization of the monomer component can be improved, and the molecular weight of polymer A can be sufficiently increased.

[0051] The content of the surfactant in the emulsion is preferably 1 to 6 parts by mass per 100 parts by mass of the monomer component. When the content of the surfactant is equal to or more than the lower limit, the dispersion stability of the emulsion is excellent. When the content of the surfactant is equal to or less than the upper limit, adverse effects of the surfactant on the water and oil repellency of an article treated with the composition containing polymer A can be reduced.

[0052] The conversion rate of the monomer component to polymer A at the end of polymerization is preferably 80% or more, more preferably 90% or more. By increasing the conversion rate, the molecular weight of polymer A also increases, and the water / oil repellency, dynamic water repellency, and resistance to repeated immersion in water also become good. In addition, by achieving a high conversion rate, the performance degradation due to the remaining monomer is suppressed and the amount of fluorine atoms contained in polymer A increases, so that the water / oil repellency, dynamic water repellency, and resistance to repeated immersion in water become good. In order to achieve a conversion rate of 80% or more, it is preferable to optimize the emulsion composition and the polymerization time.

[0053] By polymerizing the monomer components in the emulsion, a dispersion of polymer A is obtained. In the dispersion, polymer A is dispersed as emulsified particles in an aqueous medium. In the dispersion, the average particle size of the emulsion particles of polymer A is preferably 20 to 200 nm, more preferably 40 to 190 nm, and even more preferably 60 to 180 nm. When the average particle size is equal to or less than the upper limit, the water repellency of an article treated with the emulsion particles of polymer A and the dispersibility of the emulsion particles of polymer A are superior. When the average particle size is equal to or more than the lower limit, the emulsion particles of polymer A are more stable against mechanical shear. The average particle size of the emulsion particles of polymer A is calculated by cumulant analysis from the autocorrelation function obtained by dynamic light scattering for a sample prepared by diluting the dispersion of polymer A with water to a solid content concentration of 1% by mass.

[0054] After the monomer components are polymerized in the emulsion, the polymer A is recovered from the resulting dispersion as necessary. The dispersion may be directly used for producing a water / oil repellent composition or the like.

[0055] (Mechanism of action) In the above-described method for producing a fluorine-containing polymer, since a monomer component containing the monomer (a) is polymerized, it is possible to produce a polymer A from which an article having excellent dynamic water repellency or resistance to repeated immersion in water can be produced. In addition, it is possible to produce a polymer A from which an article having water and oil repellency that is not easily reduced even after exposure to alkaline conditions can be produced.

[0056] [Water / Oil Repellent Composition] The water / oil repellent composition according to one embodiment of the present invention (hereinafter also referred to as “the composition”) contains a polymer A. When the liquid medium is an aqueous medium, the water-soluble organic solvent is preferably an ether alcohol, and more preferably dipropylene glycol, tripropylene glycol, or dipropylene glycol monomethyl ether, from the viewpoint of improving the compatibility between the polymer A and the aqueous medium and facilitating the formation of a uniform film on the article. When the aqueous medium is water containing a water-soluble organic solvent, the content of the water-soluble organic solvent is preferably from 1 to 80 parts by mass, more preferably from 5 to 60 parts by mass, per 100 parts by mass of water.

In certain combinations of a nonionic surfactant and a cationic surfactant, the total amount of surfactants per 100 parts by mass of polymer A can be made 5 parts by mass or less, thereby reducing the adverse effects of the surfactants on the water and oil repellency of articles treated with this composition.

[0070] (Proportion of each ingredient) When the present composition contains an aqueous medium, the content of the aqueous medium can be appropriately selected depending on the desired solids concentration of the present composition. When the composition contains a surfactant, the content of the surfactant is preferably 1 to 6 parts by mass per 100 parts by mass of polymer A. When the content of the surfactant is equal to or more than the lower limit, the dispersion stability of the composition is excellent. When the content of the surfactant is equal to or less than the upper limit, adverse effects of the surfactant on the water / oil repellency and dynamic water repellency of an article treated with the composition can be reduced. When the present composition contains a crosslinking agent, the content of the crosslinking agent is preferably 1 to 50 parts by mass per 100 parts by mass of Polymer A.

The solids concentration is calculated by (solids mass / sample mass)×100, where the mass of the sample before heating is the sample mass and the mass of the solids after drying the sample in a convection dryer at 120° C. for 4 hours is the solids mass.

[0072] The method for producing the composition is not particularly limited. For example, when the present composition is a fluoropolymer dispersion, a dispersion of polymer A is obtained by the above-mentioned emulsion polymerization method, and the obtained dispersion may be used as the present composition as it is, or it may be used as the present composition after diluting with an aqueous medium to adjust the solid content concentration. [0073] (Mechanism of action) In the present composition described above, since polymer A contains unit (a) and said unit (a) has X at the α-position, an article treated with the present composition has excellent dynamic water repellency or resistance to repeated immersion in water. It is also possible to obtain an article having both excellent dynamic water repellency and resistance to repeated immersion in water. In addition, since polymer A contains unit (a), the water and oil repellency of an article treated with the present composition is unlikely to decrease even after it is exposed to conditions such as an alkali. When the substrate is a paper substrate, the composition is applied or impregnated to the paper substrate (external addition), and a pulp slurry containing the composition is made into paper (internal addition). [0078] The present invention will be described in detail below with reference to examples, but the present invention is not limited to these. Examples 1 to 6 are examples, and Examples 7 to 12 are comparative examples.

[0079] (Ratio of each unit) After removing the surfactant and the solvent from the fluoropolymer dispersion obtained in each example 1 The ratio (mol%) of each unit to all the units constituting the fluoropolymer was calculated based on 1H-NMR and the reaction rate of each monomer by gas chromatography of the fluoropolymer dispersion obtained in each example.

[0080] (Solid content concentration) The solid content concentration of the fluoropolymer dispersion was calculated by (solid content mass / sample mass) × 100, where the mass of the sample before heating was taken as the sample mass and the mass of the sample after drying in a convection dryer at 120 °C for 4 hours was taken as the solid content mass.

[0081] (Conversion rate) From the theoretical value of the solid content concentration of the fluoropolymer dispersion calculated from the charged amount of the raw materials and the measured value of the solid content concentration of the fluoropolymer dispersion, the conversion rate of the monomer component to the fluoropolymer was determined by measured value / theoretical value × 100. A conversion rate of 90% or more was rated as ○ (good), 80% or more and less than 90% was rated as △ (fair), and less than 80% was rated as × (poor).

[0082] (Average molecular weight) (Recovery of fluoropolymer) 6 g of the fluoropolymer dispersion obtained in each example was dropped into 60 g of a mixed solution of 6 g of hexane and 54 g of 2-butanol, and stirred to precipitate a solid. After centrifuging at 3000 rpm for 5 minutes, the obtained solid was separated. 30 g of isopropyl alcohol (hereinafter also referred to as "IPA") denatured alcohol (manufactured by Imazu Co., Ltd., product name: 95% IPA denatured alcohol) and 30 g of ion-exchanged water were added to the separated solid and stirred well. After centrifuging at 3000 rpm for 5 minutes, the obtained solid was separated from the supernatant and vacuum dried at 35 °C overnight to obtain a fluoropolymer.

[0083] (Measurement of Mn and Mw) The recovered fluorine-containing polymer was dissolved in a mixed solvent of fluorine-containing solvent (AK-225 manufactured by AGC) / tetrahydrofuran (hereinafter referred to as "THF") = 6 / 4 (volume ratio) to obtain a solution with a solid content concentration of 0.5 mass%, which was passed through a 0.2 μm filter to obtain an analysis sample. The Mn and Mw of the analysis sample were measured by GPC measurement. The measurement conditions are as follows. Equipment: Tosoh HLC-8320GPC, Column: Polymer Laboratories, MIXED-C Length: 300 mm, Outer diameter: 7.5 mm Film thickness: 5 μm Mobile phase: AK-225 / THF=6 / 4 (volume ratio), Flow rate: 1.0mL / min, Oven temperature: 37℃, Sample concentration: 1.0% by mass Injection volume: 50μL, Detector: RI, Molecular weight standards: polymethyl methacrylate (Mp=2136000, 955000, 569000, 332800, 121600, 67400, 31110, 13300, 7360, 1950, 1010, and 550).

The droplets were approximately 2 μL each, and the measurements were performed at 20°C. The contact angle of n-HD is shown as the average value of the measurements at the five locations. The contact angle of n-HD is an indicator of the oil repellency of the article.

In Tables 1 and 2, the amount of surfactant and polymerization initiator charged is the total amount including the mass of the solvent.

[0092] The fluoropolymer dispersion was diluted with distilled water to adjust the solid content concentration to 1.0 mass % to obtain a water / oil repellent composition. The water / oil repellent composition was applied to the surface of a glass substrate (ASLAB, SUPER GRADE MICROSCOPE SLIDES; product name of THICK Corporation, length: 25 mm, width: 75 mm, thickness: 1.0-1.2 mm) using a dip coater (device name: F255) by reciprocating three times at a speed of 0.5 mm / sec, and then dried at 200°C for 10 minutes to prepare an article for evaluation. The article was evaluated for water receding contact angle, n-HD static contact angle, and repeated water immersion resistance. The results are shown in Tables 1 and 2.

[0093] [Table 1]

[0094] [Table 2]

[0095] The articles treated with the water / oil repellent compositions of Examples 1 to 6 containing a fluoropolymer having the unit (a) were excellent in dynamic water repellency, oil repellency and resistance to repeated immersion in water. f Since the groups are introduced, it can be judged that these properties are unlikely to deteriorate even when exposed to alkaline conditions. The water / oil repellent compositions of Examples 7 to 12 were similar to the water / oil repellent compositions of Examples 1 to 6, except that the chlorine atom at the α-position of unit (a) was replaced with a hydrogen atom. However, the dynamic water repellency, oil repellency and repeated water immersion resistance of the articles were inferior to those of Examples 1 to 6.
