Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present disclosure relates to an aerosol generating device. The present disclosure further relates to an aerosol generating system comprising an aerosol generating device and an aerosol generating article. [Background technology]
[0002] It is known to provide an aerosol generating device for generating an inhalable vapor. Such a device may heat an aerosol-forming substrate contained in the aerosol-generating article without combustion. The aerosol-generating article may have a suitable shape for inserting the aerosol-generating article into a heating chamber of the aerosol-generating device. For example, the aerosol-generating article may have a rod shape. A heating element may be disposed in or around the heating chamber for heating the aerosol-forming substrate after the aerosol-generating article is inserted into the heating chamber of the aerosol-generating device.
[0003] It is known to heat an aerosol-forming substrate by heating a surface that is in thermal contact with the aerosol-forming substrate. Heat from the heated surface is transferred to the aerosol-forming substrate by thermal conduction. This often requires close physical contact between the heated surface and the aerosol-forming substrate. Generally, residues generated from a heated aerosol-forming substrate may accumulate on the heated surface in contact with the substrate.
[0004] It would be desirable to have an aerosol-generating device that can heat an aerosol-forming substrate in a contactless manner. It would be desirable to have an aerosol-generating device that can heat an aerosol-forming substrate without having a heated surface in physical contact with the aerosol-forming substrate. It would be desirable to have an aerosol-generating device that can heat an aerosol-forming substrate with less residue build-up.
[0005] It would be desirable to provide an aerosol generating device that has only a small amount of thermal mass to be heated. It would be desirable to provide an aerosol generating device that can be heated quickly. It would be desirable to provide an aerosol generating device that allows the temperature of the aerosol-forming substrate to respond quickly to changes in the heating protocol.
[0006] It would be desirable to provide an aerosol generating device that has low thermal hysteresis effects. It would be desirable to provide an aerosol generating device that efficiently heats a substrate. It would be desirable to provide an aerosol generating device that allows the temperature of the aerosol-forming substrate to respond quickly to changes in the target temperature.
[0007] According to one embodiment of the present invention, there is provided an aerosol generating device. The aerosol generating device may comprise a heating chamber for receiving an aerosol-forming substrate. The aerosol generating device may comprise a heater assembly for heating the aerosol-forming substrate. The heater assembly may comprise a photonic device configured for generating a beam of electromagnetic radiation. The aerosol generating device may be configured for heating the aerosol-forming substrate by directing the beam of electromagnetic radiation towards the aerosol-forming substrate.
[0008] According to one embodiment of the invention, there is provided an aerosol generating apparatus comprising a heating chamber for receiving an aerosol-forming substrate, the aerosol generating apparatus comprising a heater assembly for heating the aerosol-forming substrate, the heater assembly comprising a photonic device configured for generating a beam of electromagnetic radiation, the aerosol generating apparatus configured for heating the aerosol-forming substrate by directing the beam of electromagnetic radiation towards the aerosol-forming substrate.
[0009] The heating chamber may comprise a first sidewall parallel to a longitudinal axis of the heating chamber. The heating chamber may comprise a second sidewall disposed perpendicular to the first sidewall. The surface of the first sidewall may be greater than the surface of the second sidewall. The aerosol generating device may be configured to heat the aerosol-forming substrate by directing a beam of electromagnetic radiation through at least a portion of the first sidewall of the heating chamber and towards the aerosol-forming substrate.
[0010] An incident beam of electromagnetic radiation may enter the heating chamber, for example, through a transparent portion of the first side wall or through an opening in the first side wall. With the electromagnetic radiation, the temperature of the aerosol-forming substrate may increase up to the temperature of the aerosol-forming substrate required for the aerosol formation process.
[0011] The aerosol-generating device may be configured to heat the aerosol-forming substrate by directing a beam of electromagnetic radiation at or onto the aerosol-forming substrate. The beam of electromagnetic radiation directed at or onto the aerosol-forming substrate may penetrate at least partially into the aerosol-forming substrate.
[0012] As used herein, the terms "surface of a first sidewall" and "surface of a second sidewall" refer to the respective areas (i.e., surface areas) of the sidewalls. The area of the first sidewall exceeds the area of the second sidewall.
[0013] For example, the heating chamber may have the shape of an elongated cylinder that resembles somewhat the shape of a conventional cigarette, in such an embodiment, the first side wall may be a cylindrical side wall of the elongated cylinder, and the second side wall may be one or both of the top and bottom walls of the cylinder.
[0014] For example, the heating chamber may have the shape of a flattened cylinder somewhat resembling the shape of a disk or coin, in such an embodiment, the first side wall may be one or both of the top and bottom walls of the cylinder, and the second side wall may be the cylindrical side wall of the flattened cylinder.
[0015] A large surface area of the aerosol-forming substrate may be advantageously irradiated by irradiating the substrate over a large area through the first sidewall of the heating chamber, which may be particularly advantageous when the photonic device utilises electromagnetic radiation that has a limited penetration depth into the aerosol-forming substrate.
[0016] The aerosol generating device may include an airflow path extending through the heating chamber in a direction parallel to a first side wall of the heating chamber.
[0017] The beam of electromagnetic radiation may be directed through a first sidewall of the heat chamber and the airflow path may extend in a direction parallel to the first sidewall of the heat chamber. The direction of the beam of electromagnetic radiation entering the heat chamber may be substantially perpendicular to the direction of the airflow path within the heat chamber.
[0018] In contrast to conduction or convection, photonic devices transfer energy via electromagnetic waves. By heating the aerosol-forming substrate with a beam of electromagnetic radiation, the aerosol generating device may heat the aerosol-forming substrate in a contactless manner. No or very little physical contact between the aerosol-forming substrate and the heated surface of the heat conducting element is required to heat the aerosol-forming substrate. Omitting or reducing the heated surface of the heat conducting element may reduce the overall thermal mass to be heated. This may allow for fast and efficient heating.
[0019] Having no, or very little, physical contact between the aerosol-forming substrate and the surface to be heated may also reduce residue build-up during use.
[0020] A low thermal mass may be beneficial for an aerosol-generating device to heat the aerosol-forming substrate to a desired temperature more quickly. A low thermal mass may be beneficial for an aerosol-generating device to have fewer thermal hysteresis effects. A low thermal mass may be beneficial for an aerosol-generating device to heat the substrate more efficiently.
[0021] The photonic device may have a shorter on / off response time compared to other heaters, such as resistive heaters. The short response time of the photonic device may be beneficial for the aerosol generating device to heat the aerosol-forming substrate to a desired temperature more quickly. The short response time of the photonic device may be beneficial for the aerosol generating device to have less thermal hysteresis effects. The short response time of the photonic device may be beneficial for the aerosol generating device to heat the substrate more efficiently. For example, the heating may be quickly turned off and back on depending on whether a puff is detected by the puff sensor of the aerosol generating device. The shorter response time may allow for more precise dynamic thermal control when varying the power supply over time. For example, the temperature of the aerosol-forming substrate may be quickly raised to a desired temperature by increasing the power supplied when the temperature drops below a predetermined threshold.
[0022] The photonic device may comprise a light source. The photonic device may comprise one or more of a semiconductor based electronics, a laser, a light emitting diode, a laser diode, an IR emitter. The photonic device may comprise an IR laser diode. The photonic device may comprise a plurality of light sources. The photonic device may comprise 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 light sources. The photonic device may comprise 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 IR laser diodes.
[0023] As used herein, "IR" refers to infrared light. Generally, infrared light can be electromagnetic radiation within a wavelength range of about 780 nanometers to about 15 micrometers (or even up to about 1000 micrometers).
[0024] The photonic device may be configured to emit electromagnetic radiation at a wavelength in the range of 800 nanometers to 2500 nanometers. The photonic device may be configured to emit electromagnetic radiation at a wavelength in the range of 1100 nanometers to 2000 nanometers. The photonic device may be configured to emit electromagnetic radiation at a wavelength in the range of 1400 nanometers to 1700 nanometers. The photonic device may be configured to emit electromagnetic radiation at a wavelength of about 1550 nanometers.
[0025] Different materials absorb IR radiation at different frequencies. Careful selection of wavelengths can facilitate certain substances to be efficiently heated while other substances remain at substantially lower temperatures. As a result, the photonic device of the present invention may allow targeted heating depending on one or more components of the aerosol-forming substrate. Targeted IR radiation does not necessarily heat the surrounding air. This means that more efficient heating can be achieved. Also, there is more design freedom since air gaps may reduce thermal losses. Therefore, potentially less insulating material may be required.
[0026] Another advantage of IR heating means may be that the thermal response is fast: the aerosol-forming substrate may be substantially heated only during the time of irradiation.
[0027] The photonic device may act as an IR emitter. To select a suitable IR emitter, the composition of the aerosol-forming substrate should be considered. The IR emitter may be selected in terms of one or more IR emitter characteristics. The one or more IR emitter characteristics may be selected depending on one or more components of the aerosol-forming substrate. For example, the one or more IR emitter characteristics may include any one or combination of wavelength, frequency, spot size, swept source, pulsed vs. continuous wave, energy, power. For example, the wavelength of the IR emitter may be selected in terms of absorption of IR light by one or more components of the aerosol-forming substrate. The wavelength of the IR emitter may be selected in terms of transmission of IR light by one or more components of the aerosol-forming substrate.
[0028] The wavelength of the IR emitter may correspond to an IR absorption band of a component of the aerosol-forming substrate. The wavelength of the IR emitter may correspond to an IR absorption band of two or more components of the aerosol-forming substrate.
[0029] For example, the wavelength of the IR emitter may correspond to one or more IR absorption bands of glycerol, molasses, sugar, invert sugar, tobacco, tobacco derivatives, or any other component of the aerosol-forming substrate, as described below.
[0030] The term "wavelength" may refer to a single wavelength, multiple single wavelengths, a range of wavelengths, multiple ranges of wavelengths, or any combination thereof.
[0031] For example, a relatively large amount of glycerol may be present in the aerosol-forming substrate, and the wavelength requirement may be adapted to the strong absorption band of glycerol, which is found at wavelengths of IR light between 1300 nanometers and 2000 nanometers. As a result, the IR emitter may emit IR light within the range of 800 nanometers to 2300 nanometers, preferably 1300 nanometers to 2000 nanometers.
[0032] The IR emitter may be adapted to the IR absorption band of any of the components of the aerosol-forming substrate. The IR emitter may be adapted to the IR transmission of any of the components of the aerosol-forming substrate.
[0033] Control over the intensity of heating of the aerosol-forming substrate by the IR emitter may be achieved by moving the wavelength of heating slightly off-resonance from an already selected wavelength. This may advantageously maximize the absorption of the desired compound, e.g., glycerol, in the aerosol-forming substrate. In some embodiments, control over the intensity of heating of the aerosol-forming substrate may be achieved by varying the power supplied to the IR emitter.
[0034] The photonic device may be configured to irradiate a surface area of the aerosol-forming substrate of between 0.1 square centimeters and 10 square centimeters. The photonic device may be configured to irradiate a surface area of the aerosol-forming substrate of between 0.2 square centimeters and 4.1 square centimeters. The photonic device may be configured to irradiate a surface area of the aerosol-forming substrate of about 2 square centimeters.
[0035] The power of the beam of electromagnetic radiation may be in the range of 0.1 Watts to 30 Watts. The power of the beam of electromagnetic radiation may be in the range of 0.5 Watts to 25 Watts. The power of the beam of electromagnetic radiation may be in the range of 2 Watts to 6 Watts. The power of the beam of electromagnetic radiation may be approximately 4 Watts.
[0036] The energy density of the beam of electromagnetic radiation may be in the range of 0.5 watts per square centimeter to 100 watts per square centimeter. The energy density of the beam of electromagnetic radiation may be in the range of 1 watt per square centimeter to 20 watts per square centimeter. The energy density of the beam of electromagnetic radiation may be in the range of 2 watts per square centimeter to 6 watts per square centimeter.
[0037] The aerosol-generating apparatus may be configured such that the distance along the optical path between the photonic device and the surface of the aerosol-forming substrate is between 0.1 centimeters and 50 centimeters. The aerosol-generating apparatus may be configured such that the distance along the optical path between the photonic device and the surface of the aerosol-forming substrate is between 2 centimeters and 30 centimeters.
[0038] The aerosol generating device may include a cooling system for cooling the photonic device. The cooling system may include an airflow path extending from the air inlet, past the photonic device, to the heating chamber. The photonic device may be cooled by outside air entering the device via the air inlet and passing through the photonic device. Heat generated by the photonic device may be used to pre-heat the air passing through the photonic device before entering the heating chamber. Thereby, the energy efficiency of the aerosol generating device may be additionally improved. The cooling system may utilize passive cooling, or active cooling, or both. The cooling system may include a conduit of thermally conductive material. The cooling system may ensure that the photonic device is kept at a safe operating temperature, thereby avoiding damage.
[0039] The aerosol generating device may comprise a safety interlock switch. The safety interlock switch may be configured to allow activation of the photonic device only under certain circumstances, for example only when the aerosol-forming substrate is inserted into the heating chamber or only when the lid of the heating chamber is tightly closed. The safety interlock switch may ensure that leakage of electromagnetic radiation, for example IR light, is avoided. The safety interlock switch may help to keep the user safe. The safety interlock switch may be based on a non-contact principle, such as a magnetic safety interlock switch. The safety interlock switch may be based on an electrical circuit.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0096] Figures 1a and 1b show cross-sectional side views of an aerosol generating device, which is shown with the mouth end of the device on the left side of the figure.
[0097] As shown in Figure 1a, the aerosol-generating apparatus of Figures 1a and 1b comprises a heating chamber 10 for receiving an aerosol-forming substrate. The aerosol-generating apparatus comprises a heater assembly for heating the aerosol-forming substrate. The heater assembly comprises a photonic device 12 configured for generating a beam of electromagnetic radiation. The aerosol-generating apparatus is configured for heating the aerosol-forming substrate by directing the beam of electromagnetic radiation towards the aerosol-forming substrate when the aerosol-forming substrate is inserted into the heating chamber 10.
[0098] The aerosol generating apparatus further comprises a cooling system 14 for cooling the photonic device 12. The aerosol generating apparatus comprises a control unit 16 for controlling the operation of the apparatus. The aerosol generating apparatus comprises a power supply 18 for providing power to the apparatus.
[0099] The aerosol generating device further comprises air inlets 20, 22. The air inlets 20, 22 are formed as openings in a housing 24 of the aerosol generating device.
[0100] Arrows 26 in FIG. 1b illustrate the airflow paths in the aerosol-generating device of FIG. 1a and FIG. 1b. Ambient air enters the aerosol-generating device via air inlet 20 and then enters the heating chamber 10 via air inlet 22. In use, an aerosol-forming substrate is inserted into the heating chamber and air may flow through or past the aerosol-forming substrate. Eventually, the air containing the aerosol generated by the aerosol-forming substrate exits the heating chamber 10 at the mouth end of the aerosol-generating device, i.e., the left side of FIG. 1a and FIG. 1b. The aerosol-forming substrate may be part of an aerosol-generating article. The aerosol-forming substrate may be part of a distal portion of the aerosol-generating article. The distal portion of the article may be inserted into the heating chamber 10. The aerosol-generating article may comprise a mouthpiece, such as a mouthpiece filter element, at its proximal end. In use, a user may suck directly on the mouthpiece of the aerosol-generating article.
[0101] Figures 2a-c show cross-sections of an aerosol generating device in side view, with the mouth end of the device shown to the left of the figure.
[0102] As shown in Fig. 2a, the aerosol generating device of Fig. 2a-c comprises a heating chamber 10 for receiving an aerosol-forming substrate and a heater assembly for heating the aerosol-forming substrate. As shown in Fig. 2b, the heating chamber 10 comprises a first sidewall 10a parallel to a longitudinal axis of the heating chamber 10. The heating chamber 10 comprises a second sidewall 10b disposed perpendicular to the first sidewall 10a. The surface of the first sidewall 10a is larger than the surface of the second sidewall 10b.
[0103] As shown in Figure 2a, the heater assembly comprises a photonic device 12. The photonic device 12 is disposed transversely between the heating chamber 10 and an outer wall of the housing 24. The photonic device 12 may comprise a ring-shaped light source with the ring surrounding the central longitudinal axis of the aerosol generating device. Alternatively, the photonic device 12 may comprise one or more light sources disposed circumferentially around the heating chamber in the transverse plane of the aerosol generating device.
[0104] The photonic device 12 comprises an IR emitter, such as an IR laser diode, configured to generate an IR beam, and the aerosol generator is configured to heat the aerosol-forming substrate by directing the IR beam through the first sidewall 12a of the heating chamber 10 and toward the aerosol-forming substrate when the aerosol-forming substrate is inserted into the heating chamber 10.
[0105] The aerosol generating device comprises a cooling system 14, a control unit 16, a power supply 18, and a device housing 24. The aerosol generating device further comprises air inlets 20, 22. Arrows 26 in Figure 2b illustrate the airflow path in the aerosol generating device of Figures 2a-2c. The air inlet 20 is positioned close to the cooling system 14. This may further enhance cooling capabilities through air convection.
[0106] 2a, a first sidewall 10a of the heating chamber comprises an IR-transmitting material 28, such as fused silica. The inside wall of the housing 24 that coaxially surrounds the heating chamber 10 comprises an IR-reflective material 30, such as aluminum.
[0107] Arrows 32 in FIG. 2c illustrate the propagation of the IR beam when the photonic device 12 is activated. The beam of IR light 32 exits the photonic device 12. Depending on the direction of the beam, the beam 32 may enter the heating chamber 10 directly through the IR transparent material 28, or may first be reflected off the IR reflecting material 30 before entering the heating chamber 10 through the IR transparent material 28. The IR reflecting material 30 therefore functions as a beam guiding means. An aerosol-forming substrate located within the heating chamber 10 may be heated to generate an aerosol by the IR beam 32 entering the heating chamber 10 through the first sidewall 12a via the IR transparent material 28.
[0108] The light reflecting and scattering possibilities are exploited to irradiate the majority of the aerosol-forming substrate through the transmissive first side wall 10a of the heating chamber 10. Thereby, a flat thermal gradient may be achieved.
[0109] Reflectance of the IR beam 32 into the heating chamber 10 is advantageously enhanced by the aerosol-generating device walls 34, which include an IR-reflective material 30 and are inclined at an angle of less than 90 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the aerosol-generating device. The walls 34 therefore act as beam guiding means. The angle may be optimized for the light direction and substrate position.
[0110] Figures 3a to 3c show cross-sections of an aerosol generating device in side view, with the mouth end of the device being shown at the top of the figure.
[0111] As shown in Figure 3a, the aerosol generating device of Figures 3a-3c comprises a heating chamber 10 for receiving an aerosol-forming substrate 36 and a heater assembly for heating the aerosol-forming substrate 36. The heater assembly comprises a photonic device 12. The heating chamber 10 is disposed between the photonic device 12 and the mouth end of the aerosol generating device with respect to the longitudinal axis of the aerosol generating device. The bottom wall of the heating chamber facing the photonic device 12 is made of a material transparent to electromagnetic radiation (e.g. IR light).
[0112] The aerosol generating device further comprises a cooling system 14, a control unit 16, a power supply 18, and a device housing 24. An air inlet is present but is not shown in FIG.
[0113] The aerosol-forming substrate 36 may be inserted into the heating chamber 10 via a reclosable lid 40 comprising a hinged door, as shown in FIG. 3b. The reclosable lid 40 is located in the side wall of the aerosol-generating device between the proximal end of the heating chamber 10 and the distal end of the heating chamber 10 relative to the longitudinal axis of the aerosol-generating device. FIG. 3b also shows that the heating chamber 10 comprises a first side wall 10a parallel to the longitudinal axis of the heating chamber 10 and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the aerosol-generating device. The heating chamber 10 comprises a second side wall 10b disposed perpendicular to the first side wall 10a. The surface of the first side wall 10a is larger than the surface of the second side wall 10b.
[0114] The aerosol generating device of Figures 3a-3c further comprises a safety window 38. The safety window 38 is impermeable to electromagnetic radiation (e.g., IR radiation) emitted by the photonic device 12. The safety window 38 may comprise an IR blocking material. Thus, the safety window 38 may prevent potentially harmful IR radiation 32, shown in Figure 3c, from propagating towards the oral end of the aerosol generating device and irradiating the user.
[0115] The safety window 38 may include a reflective material. For example, an IR reflective coating may be present towards the interior of the heat chamber, such that the incident IR beam may be reflected back towards the heat chamber 12. The IR reflective coating may therefore act as a beam guiding means.
[0116] 4a-4e show cross-sections of the heating chamber 10 of an aerosol generating device in top view.
[0117] FIG. 4a shows a circular cross-section of the heating chamber 10 with the lid 40 in a closed configuration. FIG. 4b shows a circular cross-section of the heating chamber 10 with the lid 40 in an open configuration, the lid 40 comprising a sliding door. The aerosol-forming substrate may be inserted through an opening 42. FIG. 4c shows a circular cross-section of the heating chamber 10 with the lid 40 in an open configuration, the lid 40 comprising a hinged door. FIG. 4d shows a rectangular cross-section of the heating chamber 10 with the lid 40 in a closed configuration. FIG. 4e shows a rectangular cross-section of the heating chamber 10 with the lid 40 in an open configuration. The lid 40 of FIGS. 4a-4e may comprise a safety interlock switch such that the photonic device 12 can only be operated when the opening 42 is closed.
