[0048] The improvement of transmittance is of great significance to the quality improvement of large-size liquid crystal display products. Among them, one possible way is to make large-size liquid crystal display products use negative liquid crystals, which can improve the transmittance of the product. However, in the current alignment process of liquid crystal products, due to the size constraints of the optical alignment equipment, it is impossible to perform optical alignment on large-size products (which require higher generation production lines). This means that the alignment layer can only be prepared by the rubbing process. However, in the related art, when the alignment layer prepared by the rubbing alignment process is used in combination with negative liquid crystal, it is very easy to produce afterimages, which greatly reduces the display quality of the liquid crystal display product.
[0049] The embodiments of the present disclosure provide a liquid crystal display panel that uses negative liquid crystals to increase light transmittance while reducing or eliminating afterimages, thereby improving the overall display quality of the liquid crystal display panel. It is understood that the liquid crystal display panel can be a larger-sized liquid crystal display panel, such as a liquid crystal display panel larger than 40 inches, and in particular, a liquid crystal display panel larger than 80 inches. The liquid crystal display panel can also be a small-sized display panel, such as a display panel for a mobile phone screen or a display panel for a tablet computer, and in particular, can be a liquid crystal display panel produced on a high-generation production line and then cut.
[0050] Referring to Figure 1 , the liquid crystal display panel includes an array substrate ARR and a color filter substrate CF arranged in a cell-like configuration, and a liquid crystal layer LC positioned between the array substrate ARR and the color filter substrate CF. In some examples, a sealing layer SLT surrounding the liquid crystal layer may be further disposed between the array substrate ARR and the color filter substrate CF. The sealing layer SLT, the array substrate ARR, and the color filter substrate CF collectively enclose a liquid crystal cell for accommodating the liquid crystal layer LC. Optionally, the sealing layer SLT may be made of a frame sealant.
[0051] In this embodiment, the liquid crystal layer LC includes a negative liquid crystal composition. The total weight content of monomers containing a dibenzothiophene structure and monomers containing a dibenzofuran structure in the negative liquid crystal composition does not exceed 2%. Compared to a liquid crystal layer using a positive liquid crystal composition, using a negative liquid crystal composition in this liquid crystal layer can improve the transmittance of the liquid crystal display panel and eliminate or significantly reduce afterimages.
[0052] It can be understood that when positive liquid crystal molecules are energized, their long axes align along the direction of the electric field; when negative liquid crystal molecules are energized, their long axes align perpendicular to the electric field. In locations where the horizontal electric field (a horizontal electric field is defined as the electric field parallel to the plane of the array substrate) is weak in the pixel electrode region, such as in the center of the slit, negative liquid crystal molecules align more regularly than positive ones. This allows the use of negative liquid crystal compositions to improve transmittance.
[0053] In one example, the liquid crystal display panel adopts an ADS (Advanced Super Dimension Switch) electric field mode. Referring to Figures 2 and 3, the array substrate ARR of the liquid crystal display panel includes a pixel electrode PIXL and a common electrode COML. A fringe electric field is generated between the pixel electrode PIXL and the common electrode COML; the liquid crystal molecules tilt or flip under the control of the fringe electric field, thereby achieving control of the transmittance. The fringe electric field has a horizontal component (parallel to the plane where the liquid crystal display panel is located) and a vertical component (parallel to the normal direction of the liquid crystal display panel). For positive liquid crystal compositions, the vertical component of the fringe electric field tilts the liquid crystal molecules, resulting in irregular arrangement of the positive liquid crystal molecules, reducing the liquid crystal light efficiency; for negative liquid crystal compositions, the vertical component of the electric field has no effect and has little effect on the arrangement of the negative liquid crystal molecules, which is beneficial to improving the transmittance of the liquid crystal display panel. In other words, compared with liquid crystal products using positive liquid crystal compositions, the maximum brightness of the liquid crystal display panel is improved; similarly, when displaying the same grayscale, the brightness of the liquid crystal display panel is also higher. In some examples, it has been verified that, compared with the use of a positive liquid crystal composition, the liquid crystal display panel of the present disclosure can increase the transmittance by 4.6% to 6.5% when using a negative liquid crystal composition.
[0054] Not only that, compared to the liquid crystal layer using a positive liquid crystal composition, the liquid crystal layer using a negative liquid crystal composition can also improve the contrast of the liquid crystal display panel, thereby further improving the display quality of the liquid crystal display panel. When displaying a black screen (a screen with a grayscale of 0, L0), if the liquid crystal display panel uses a positive liquid crystal composition, the vertical component of the fringe electric field will cause the positive liquid crystal molecules to tilt, resulting in higher brightness. In the embodiment of the present disclosure, the vertical component of the fringe electric field does not work on the negative liquid crystal molecules, and the negative liquid crystal molecules are arranged neatly to reduce the brightness. Therefore, the liquid crystal display panel has a greater brightness when displaying a non-black screen, a lower brightness when displaying a black screen, and ultimately has a higher contrast.
[0055] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, an array substrate is provided with an array-distributed pixel unit, wherein the pixel unit includes a pixel electrode PIXL, a common electrode COML corresponding to the pixel electrode PIXL, and a pixel driving circuit (e.g., a thin film transistor) for driving the pixel electrode PIXL. The array substrate may further include a scanning line for loading a scanning signal to the pixel driving circuit and a data line DataL for loading a driving voltage to the pixel driving circuit; each scanning line and each data line defines a plurality of pixel areas, and the pixel electrode and the common electrode are arranged in the pixel area. Under the control of the scanning signal, the pixel driving circuit can load the driving voltage loaded on the scanning line to the pixel electrode, thereby controlling the liquid crystal deflection on the pixel area corresponding to the pixel electrode. In an embodiment of the present disclosure, for convenience of expression, the direction in which the scanning line extends is referred to as the row direction DH, and the direction in which the data line extends is referred to as the column direction DV. In one example, the row direction and the column direction are perpendicular. In one example, the array substrate may be provided with a gate layer and a source-drain metal layer; the scanning line may be arranged in the gate layer and the data line may be arranged in the source-drain metal layer.
[0056] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, referring to FIG2 , the liquid crystal display panel further includes an alignment layer PI. In one example, the alignment direction of the alignment layer is substantially parallel to the column direction of the array substrate, for example, the angle between the alignment layer and the column direction of the array substrate ARR does not exceed 10°. In this way, at left and right (both sides of the row direction) viewing angles, the state difference of the negative liquid crystal molecules is very small, which makes the left and right color deviation of the liquid crystal display panel very small. It is understandable that in the related art, the liquid crystal display panel adopts a positive liquid crystal composition and the alignment direction of the alignment layer is substantially parallel to the row direction of the array substrate, which makes the difference between the liquid crystal molecules at the left and right viewing angles larger, thereby resulting in a larger color deviation of the liquid crystal display panel. Therefore, compared with the related art, the liquid crystal display panel of this embodiment can also reduce the left and right color deviation of the liquid crystal display panel, further improving the display quality of the liquid crystal display panel.
[0057] In the liquid crystal display panel of the disclosed embodiment, the total weight content of monomers containing a dibenzothiophene structure and monomers containing a dibenzofuran structure in the negative liquid crystal composition does not exceed 2%, particularly preferably does not exceed 1%, and preferably does not exceed 0.5%. In one example, the negative liquid crystal composition does not contain monomers containing a dibenzothiophene structure and does not contain monomers containing a dibenzofuran structure. This can significantly reduce or eliminate afterimages.
[0058] Afterimages are a key criterion for evaluating display quality. This refers to the phenomenon where, after the display panel has been lit for a period of time and the screen switches, the previous screen does not quickly disappear, but remains partially visible superimposed on the next screen. Afterimages cause screen overlap, leading to display anomalies. While analyzing the afterimage problem caused by negative liquid crystals, the inventors discovered that a key cause of afterimages is that a screen is left on for too long, causing charged ionic impurities in the liquid crystal cell to migrate to the vicinity of an electrode (e.g., a pixel electrode or a common electrode), forming a built-in electric field opposite to the driving voltage. When the next screen is displayed, the ions do not immediately dissipate, affecting the normal arrangement of the liquid crystal molecules in the next screen. Compared to positive liquid crystal molecules, negative liquid crystal monomers have a high electron cloud density and a high proportion of polar monomers. They easily adsorb ions in the negative liquid crystal composition, resulting in a decrease in voltage maintenance and, in turn, afterimages. However, in related art, negative liquid crystal compositions typically contain monomers with high negativity (negative and highly polar), a large refractive index, and a dibenzothiophene or dibenzofuran structure to ensure a shorter response time. The inventors have discovered that liquid crystal monomers with dibenzothiophene or dibenzofuran structures are not stable enough and will generate impurity ions when they age or decompose. These impurity ions can cause and intensify afterimages and even cause stains on the liquid crystal display panel.
[0059] In response to this discovery, the inventors proposed a technical solution to reduce unstable structures in negative liquid crystal compositions. Specifically, the total weight content of dibenzothiophene-containing monomers and dibenzofuran-containing monomers in the negative liquid crystal composition does not exceed 2%. Verification tests have shown that this significantly improves image retention in liquid crystal display panels.
[0060] Furthermore, one or more liquid crystal monomers with medium negativity (negative and medium polarity) and a large refractive index can be added to the negative liquid crystal composition to compensate for the material properties of the negative liquid crystal composition and offset the changes in material properties caused by the reduction or removal of the content of monomers containing dibenzothiophene structures and monomers containing dibenzofuran structures. This can prevent the overall properties of the negative liquid crystal composition from changing significantly, such as maintaining a low response time, substantially similar ne (anomalous refractive index), no (normal refractive index), etc., or at least one or all of them. In the embodiment of the present disclosure, Δn(ne-n0)>0.12 is used as a standard for the liquid crystal monomer or liquid crystal composition to have a large refractive index.
[0061] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the negative liquid crystal composition comprises a negative monomer content of 35% to 50% by weight. Thus, these negative monomers can impart suitable negativity to the negative liquid crystal composition, enabling the negative liquid crystal composition to satisfy the required electric field response characteristics.
[0062] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the negative liquid crystal composition includes two monomers represented by the following Chemical Formula 1 and Chemical Formula 2:
[0063] wherein R and R' of any one monomer are independently selected from an alkyl group having 1 to 7 carbon atoms, a fluorine-substituted alkyl group having 1 to 7 carbon atoms, an alkenyl group having 3 to 10 carbon atoms, an unsaturated alkyl group having 3 to 10 carbon atoms, an oxacycloalkyl group having 4 to 10 carbon atoms, an oxacycloalkyl group substituted with an alkyl group having 4 to 10 carbon atoms, an aryl group having 6 to 10 carbon atoms, and an aryl group substituted with an alkyl group having 7 to 15 carbon atoms.
[0064] Exemplarily, R and R' of any monomer are independently selected from: methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, tert-butyl, isobutyl, pentyl, hexyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl, trifluoromethyl, propen-1-yl, 2-propenyl, 1,2-butadienyl, buten-1-yl, 3-buten-1-yl, 3-pentenyl, hexylvinyl, hexylbutenyl, p-tolyl, 1,3-dioxane-2-yl, 5-pentyl-1,3-dioxane-2-yl, 5-butyl-1,3-dioxane-2-yl, 5-(4-propylcyclohexan-1-yl)-1,3-dioxane-2-yl, 5-propyl-1-oxane-2-yl, 5-ethyl-1-oxane-2-yl.
[0065] Furthermore, the total mass content of the two monomers is between 13% and 20%.
[0066] Both liquid crystal monomers have a large refractive index, which can make the negative liquid crystal composition have a large refractive index. They also possess moderately high polarity, which allows the polarity of the negative liquid crystal composition to remain relatively strong, thereby ensuring that the negative liquid crystal mixture has suitable electric field response characteristics. Furthermore, the polarity of these two monomers is not too strong, preventing excessive polarity from easily adsorbing ions in the negative liquid crystal composition, thereby helping to reduce image retention.
[0067] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the negative liquid crystal composition includes a monomer represented by the following chemical structure:
[0068] wherein R and R' of any one monomer are independently selected from an alkyl group having 1 to 7 carbon atoms, a fluorine-substituted alkyl group having 1 to 7 carbon atoms, an alkenyl group having 3 to 10 carbon atoms, an unsaturated alkyl group having 3 to 10 carbon atoms, an oxacycloalkyl group having 4 to 10 carbon atoms, an oxacycloalkyl group substituted with an alkyl group having 4 to 10 carbon atoms, an aryl group having 6 to 10 carbon atoms, and an aryl group substituted with an alkyl group having 7 to 15 carbon atoms.
[0069] Exemplarily, R and R' of any monomer are independently selected from: methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, tert-butyl, isobutyl, pentyl, hexyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl, trifluoromethyl, propen-1-yl, 2-propenyl, 1,2-butadienyl, buten-1-yl, 3-buten-1-yl, 3-pentenyl, hexylvinyl, hexylbutenyl, p-tolyl, 1,3-dioxane-2-yl, 5-pentyl-1,3-dioxane-2-yl, 5-butyl-1,3-dioxane-2-yl, 5-(4-propylcyclohexan-1-yl)-1,3-dioxane-2-yl, 5-propyl-1-oxane-2-yl, 5-ethyl-1-oxane-2-yl.
[0070] In the monomers of the negative liquid crystal composition exemplified above, additives in the negative liquid crystal composition are not shown, for example, antioxidants, light stabilizers, etc. are not shown.
[0071] As follows, the present embodiment discloses three different negative liquid crystal compositions (a first liquid crystal composition LCA, a second liquid crystal composition LCB, and a third liquid crystal composition LCC) as verification negative liquid crystal compositions and reference negative liquid crystal compositions.
[0072] The monomers of the first liquid crystal composition LCA and the mass content of each monomer are shown in Table 1:
[0073] Table 1: Monomers and mass contents of the first liquid crystal composition
[0074] The first liquid crystal composition LCA is a contrast negative liquid crystal composition comprising a monomer X. Monomer X contains a dibenzothiophene structure and has a mass content of 6.4% in the first liquid crystal composition LCA. In the first liquid crystal composition LCA, monomer X has a very high polarity and a large refractive index, while the polarities of the remaining monomers are all lower than monomer X. Monomer X imparts a high polarity to the first liquid crystal composition LCA, excellent electric field response characteristics, and a superior response time. However, testing revealed that monomer X is unstable when heated, which can cause the first liquid crystal composition LCA to generate impurity ions during the preparation process, which can easily lead to severe staining and image retention issues in the product.
[0075] The monomers of the second liquid crystal composition LCB and the mass content of each monomer are shown in Table 2:
[0076] Table 2: Monomers and mass contents of the second liquid crystal composition
[0077] The second liquid crystal composition LCB is a contrast negative liquid crystal composition, which has a monomer Y. The monomer Y contains a dibenzothiophene structure, and the mass content of the monomer Y in the second liquid crystal composition LCB is 5.9%. In the second liquid crystal composition LCB, the monomer Y has a very high polarity and a large refractive index, and the polarities of the remaining monomers are all smaller than monomer Y. The monomer Y makes the second liquid crystal composition LCB have a large polarity, good electric field response characteristics, and a better response time. However, in testing, it was found that the monomer Y is unstable when heated, which will cause the second liquid crystal composition LCB to produce impurity ions during the preparation process, which can easily lead to the product having serious staining and afterimage problems.
[0078] The monomers of the third liquid crystal composition LCC and the mass content of each monomer are shown in Table 3:
[0079] Table 3: Monomers and mass contents of the third liquid crystal composition
[0080] The third liquid crystal composition LCC does not contain monomer X or monomer Y and is a negative liquid crystal composition according to an embodiment of the present disclosure, serving as a verification negative liquid crystal composition. Each monomer in the third liquid crystal composition LCC does not contain a dibenzothiophene structure or a dibenzofuran structure. Therefore, compared to the first liquid crystal composition LCA and the second liquid crystal composition LCB, the third liquid crystal composition LCC has better stability.
[0081] In the first liquid crystal composition LCA and the second liquid crystal composition LCB, monomers X and Y play a significant role in the high polarity of the negative liquid crystal composition. In the third liquid crystal composition LCC, to ensure that the negative liquid crystal composition still has a high polarity, three liquid crystal monomers with intermediate polarity, namely monomers Y1, Y2, and Y3, are added. These liquid crystal monomers have a moderate polarity, which can reduce ion adsorption and improve afterimages. These monomers have a medium polarity, which can contribute polarity to the third liquid crystal composition LCC and improve its electric field response characteristics, ensuring that the polarity of the third liquid crystal composition LCC meets the requirements.
[0082] In the first liquid crystal composition LCA and the second liquid crystal composition LCB, monomers X and Y play a significant role in the high refractive index of the negative liquid crystal composition. In the third liquid crystal composition LCC, monomers Y1 and Y4 are added. Both monomers Y1 and Y4 have high refractive indices, thus enabling the third liquid crystal composition LCC to have a high refractive index.
[0083] In other words, the third liquid crystal composition LCC can compensate for the changes in material properties caused by the removal of monomer X and monomer Y by adding new monomers or adjusting the content of the monomers, so that the material properties of the third liquid crystal composition LCC are still maintained at a level that can meet the requirements.
[0084] Furthermore, by eliminating monomers with insufficient stability, the third liquid crystal composition LCC exhibits improved light and heat stability, preventing smearing and image retention under conventional processing conditions. By adjusting the various components of the third liquid crystal composition LCC, the third liquid crystal composition LCC exhibits substantially the same level of electric field response characteristics as the first liquid crystal composition LCA and the second liquid crystal composition LCB, with comparable and satisfactory response times.
[0085] In the monomers shown in Tables 1 to 3 of the embodiments of the present disclosure, R and R' of any monomer are independently selected from an alkyl group having 1 to 7 carbon atoms, an alkenyl group having 3 to 10 carbon atoms, an unsaturated alkyl group having 3 to 10 carbon atoms, an oxacycloalkyl group having 4 to 10 carbon atoms, an aryl group having 6 to 10 carbon atoms, and an aryl group substituted with an alkyl group having 7 to 15 carbon atoms.
[0086] In Tables 1 to 3 of the embodiments of the present disclosure, "neutral monomer properties" means that the monomer is a neutral monomer, i.e., the monomer has a dielectric constant of substantially 0. "Negative monomer properties" means that the monomer is a negative monomer, i.e., the monomer has a dielectric constant less than 0. "Medium negative monomer properties" means that the monomer is a negative monomer with a medium polarity. "High negative monomer properties" means that the monomer is a negative monomer with a high polarity.
[0087] The material properties of the first liquid crystal composition LCA, the second liquid crystal composition LCB, and the third liquid crystal composition LCC were tested in the embodiment of the present disclosure. The test results are shown in Table 4:
[0088] Table 4: Material parameters of three liquid crystal compositions
[0089] Wherein, △n is the optical refractive index anisotropy; △n=ne–no;
[0090] Ne is the refractive index along the long axis of the liquid crystal molecules;
[0091] No is the refractive index perpendicular to the long axis of the liquid crystal molecules;
[0092] △ε is dielectric anisotropy; △ε=ε∥-ε⊥;
[0093] ε∥ is the dielectric constant component along the long axis of the liquid crystal molecules;
[0094] ε⊥ is the dielectric constant component perpendicular to the long axis of the liquid crystal molecules;
[0095] Tni is the clearing point;
[0096] Tcn is the melting point;
[0097] γ1 is the rotational viscosity;

[0099] K22 is the elastic constant of torsional deformation;
[0100] K33 is the elastic constant of bending deformation;
[0101] P is the density of the liquid crystal. The material parameters tested in Table 4 show that the material parameters of the first liquid crystal composition LCA, the second liquid crystal composition LCB, and the third liquid crystal composition LCC are substantially similar or at the same level. This indicates that the third liquid crystal composition LCC, when used in a liquid crystal display panel, can achieve similar display effects and quality as the first liquid crystal composition LCA and the second liquid crystal composition LCB, and can significantly improve afterimages.
[0102] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, each main monomer in the negative liquid crystal composition does not contain an ester group. The inventors have found that monomers containing ester groups have insufficient photostability, especially insufficient tolerance to ultraviolet light, and are easily decomposed to produce ions, resulting in increased afterimages. In this embodiment, by avoiding the use of main monomers containing ester groups, the stability and reliability of the negative liquid crystal composition can be improved. In this embodiment, the main monomer in the negative liquid crystal composition refers to a monomer whose mass content is not less than 1%.
[0103] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the negative liquid crystal composition may contain a large mass content of an antioxidant. For example, the mass content of the antioxidant may be not less than 0.1%, for example, it may be in the range of 0.1 to 0.5%. Furthermore, the mass content of the antioxidant may be in the range of 0.2% to 0.5%. This can improve the photothermal stability of the negative liquid crystal composition and reduce the risk of residual images caused by aging byproducts of the negative liquid crystal composition. In one example, the antioxidant is a hindered phenol stabilizer, which can achieve an inhibitory effect on free radical polymerization and block the oxidative damage of free radicals to monomers in the negative liquid crystal composition.
[0104] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the negative liquid crystal composition may contain a relatively high content of a light stabilizer, such as a relatively high content of a hindered amine light stabilizer. For example, the content of the hindered amine light stabilizer may be no less than 0.03%. Furthermore, the content of the light stabilizer may be no less than 0.1%, and in particular, may be between 0.2% and 0.5%. This can improve the light and heat stability of the negative liquid crystal composition and reduce the risk of image retention caused by oxidation byproducts.
[0105] In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the liquid crystal display panel of the present disclosure further improves the alignment layer to further reduce the risk of afterimage.
[0106] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, referring to FIG4 , the alignment layer may include a first sub-layer PIA, a second sub-layer PIB, and a third sub-layer PIC stacked in sequence; the third sub-layer PIC is disposed adjacent to the liquid crystal layer. In other words, the third sub-layer PIC is located on a side of the first sub-layer PIA away from the pixel electrode.
[0107] The resistivity of the second sub-film layer PIB is less than that of the third sub-film layer PIC, and the resistivity of the first sub-film layer PIA is greater than that of the second sub-film layer PIB. In this embodiment, the third sub-film layer PIC is mainly used to provide a higher alignment force for the liquid crystal molecules, reduce the alignment bias of the liquid crystal display panel under AC voltage, and thus suppress AC (alternating current) afterimages. The second sub-film layer PIB has a certain conductivity, which can quickly release the residual DC bias caused by the DC bias voltage and impurity ions, thereby eliminating the DC (direct current) afterimage. In this embodiment, the alignment layer is also provided with a first sub-film layer PIA, and the first sub-film layer PIA has a high resistance, thereby preventing the charge accumulated in the second sub-film layer PIB from being transferred to the pixel electrode or the common electrode, thereby improving the voltage stability of the pixel electrode and the common electrode, and improving the voltage maintenance rate of the liquid crystal display panel, thereby improving the afterimage and avoiding the flicker problem caused by the reduction in the voltage maintenance rate.
[0108] Optionally, the resistivity of the second sub-film layer PIB is less than 10 14 Ω·cm. It is understood that the smaller the resistivity of the second sub-film layer PIB is, the more significant the effect of the alignment layer in improving the residual image is. In one example, the resistivity of the second sub-film layer PIB is not greater than 10 13 Ω·cm. Furthermore, the resistivity of the second sub-film layer PIB is not greater than 10 12 Ω·cm. In one example, the resistivity of the second sub-film layer PIB is 10 12 Ω·cm~10 13 Ω·cm.
[0109] In one example, the resistivity of the third sub-layer PIC is greater than 10 15 Ω·cm.
[0110] In one example, the resistivity of the first sub-layer PIA is not less than the resistivity of the third sub-layer PIC. Therefore, the resistivity of the first sub-layer PIA is greater than 10 15 Ω·cm.
[0111] In one example, referring to FIG4 , the third sub-film layer PIC, the second sub-film layer PIB and the first sub-film layer PIA are three different parts of the same film layer. There are no strict boundaries or characteristic mutations between the three. For example, the materials and characteristics between the two adjacent parts gradually change and transition in sequence.
[0112] For example, when preparing the alignment layer, an alignment material layer can be first formed, and then the alignment material layer can be pre-cured to form the alignment material layer into layers. After layering, the alignment material layer can be further cured to form the desired third sub-layer PIC, second sub-layer PIB, and first sub-layer PIA. In one example, when forming the third sub-layer PIC, linearly polarized light can be used to irradiate the third sub-layer PIC to achieve linear polarized light alignment, thereby providing the alignment force required for the negative liquid crystal composition. In another example, after the third sub-layer PIC is cured, a friction process can be used to form alignment grooves on the surface of the third sub-layer PIC, thereby providing the alignment force required for the negative liquid crystal composition.
[0113] The disclosed embodiment also prepared and tested two different liquid crystal test units, each having two different alignment layers. One of the liquid crystal test units was a control liquid crystal test unit, whose alignment layer only included two sub-film layers: the third sub-film layer PIC and the second sub-film layer PIB. The other liquid crystal test unit was a test liquid crystal test unit, whose alignment layer included three sub-film layers: the third sub-film layer PIC, the second sub-film layer PIB, and the first sub-film layer PIA. Before undergoing high-temperature aging treatment, the voltage maintenance rates (initial voltage maintenance rates) of the control liquid crystal test unit and the test liquid crystal test unit were basically the same. Specifically, the initial voltage maintenance rate of the control liquid crystal test unit was 84.7%, and the initial voltage maintenance rate of the test liquid crystal test unit was 84%. After the control liquid crystal test unit and the test liquid crystal test unit were subjected to high-temperature aging treatment, their voltage maintenance rates (voltage maintenance rates after aging) were measured again. The voltage maintenance rate of the control liquid crystal test unit after aging was reduced to 71.6%, a significant decrease. The voltage maintenance rate of the test liquid crystal test unit after aging was reduced to 83.2%, only a slight decrease. This indicates that after the first sub-film layer PIA is provided in the alignment layer, the voltage maintenance rate of the liquid crystal display panel can be better maintained and the alignment layer can have higher heat resistance stability.
[0114] The disclosed embodiment also found in tests that, compared to a liquid crystal display panel in which the alignment layer is provided with only the second sub-film layer PIB and the third sub-film layer PIC, the embodiment in which the alignment layer is provided with three layers, namely the first sub-film layer PIA, the second sub-film layer PIB and the third sub-film layer PIC, can achieve an improvement in afterimages. Specifically, in one test, it was found that when the alignment layer is provided with three layers, namely the first sub-film layer PIA, the second sub-film layer PIB and the third sub-film layer PIC, the afterimage level of the liquid crystal display panel does not exceed 1.5; while when the alignment layer is provided with two layers, namely the second sub-film layer PIB and the third sub-film layer PIC, the afterimage level of the liquid crystal display panel is around 2. In addition, the test also found that when the alignment layer is provided with three layers, namely the first sub-film layer PIA, the second sub-film layer PIB and the third sub-film layer PIC, the grayscale of the afterimage disappearance of the liquid crystal display panel is also improved. Specifically, the disappearing grayscale 10 hours ago (the picture is continuously displayed for no more than 10 hours) is basically around grayscale 147; and the disappearing grayscale 10 hours later (the picture is continuously displayed for more than 10 hours) is basically around grayscale 167.
[0115] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the surface of the alignment layer is provided with alignment grooves, which are used to constrain the arrangement direction of the liquid crystal. Specifically, a friction process can be used to prepare the alignment layer. In particular, for large-size display panels and high-generation production lines, this can avoid being restricted by the size of the optical alignment equipment. In this embodiment, by improving the negative liquid crystal composition and the alignment layer, the afterimage problem when the two are matched with each other in the related art is effectively overcome, and the display quality of the liquid crystal display panel can be improved while using high-generation production lines to reduce costs, or large-size, high-quality display products can be provided.
[0116] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the pretilt angle of the alignment layer does not exceed 0.68°. This can reduce AC afterimages caused by alignment bias. In this embodiment, the pretilt angle of the alignment layer can be improved by improving one or more of the alignment layer materials and alignment processes.
[0117] For example, the material of the rubbing cloth used in the alignment process can be improved to improve the pretilt angle. Taking nylon (Rayon) and cotton (Cotton) as examples, under the same alignment conditions, the pretilt angle of the alignment layer is different. For example, compared with the use of nylon (such as RayonHY-T116), the use of cotton (such as cotton 90ic) can significantly reduce the pretilt angle. In a verification, it was found that when RayonHY-T116 was used for alignment, the pretilt angle of the alignment layer was 1.10°; when cotton 90ic was used for alignment, the pretilt angle of the alignment layer dropped to 0.54°. It can be understood that when the material of the rubbing cloth is the same but the material of the alignment layer is different, the pretilt angle of the alignment layer can be different.
[0118] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the alignment layer can be optimized to enable the alignment layer to rapidly release DC bias charge, thereby improving DC image retention. For example, the conductivity of the second sub-layer PIB of the alignment layer can be adjusted to increase its conductivity, thereby increasing the release rate of DC bias charge and improving DC image retention.
[0119] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, a hindered amine stabilizer may be added to the alignment layer. This hindered amine stabilizer can bind to residual reactive groups or generated free radicals in the alignment layer, for example, forming hydrogen bonds, and then adhere to the surface of the alignment layer. In this way, the hindered amine stabilizer can prevent ion precipitation in the alignment layer, reducing the number of ions released into the negative liquid crystal composition, thereby improving staining and afterimage problems of the liquid crystal display panel.
[0120] In one example, the mass content of the hindered amine stabilizer in the alignment layer may be in the range of 0.005% to 0.5%, and in particular, in the range of 0.03% to 0.1%.
[0121] In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the quality control of the alignment layer can be strengthened to improve afterimages. For example, during the alignment layer manufacturing process, cleaning of the alignment layer can be strengthened to reduce the precipitation of light ions in the alignment layer, thereby reducing stains caused by ion precipitation in the alignment layer and improving afterimages caused by excessive impurity ions in the negative liquid crystal composition.
[0122] In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the alignment layer may also be made of UV-resistant materials to improve the light stability of the alignment layer, thereby reducing ion precipitation caused by aging of the alignment layer, reducing stain defects of the LCD panel and improving the afterimage of the LCD panel.
[0123] In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the alignment layer may further include a material having a capture (TRAP) group to capture free ions, free radicals and free reaction residues, thereby reducing the free ion content and aging rate in the alignment layer, thereby reducing the amount of ions precipitated from the alignment layer, reducing the stain defects of the liquid crystal display panel and improving the afterimage of the liquid crystal display panel.
[0124] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, a matching experiment between a negative liquid crystal composition and an alignment layer can be conducted to further improve the quality of liquid crystal display panels, particularly to further reduce staining. Furthermore, during this matching experiment, the voltage maintenance ratio of the test unit can be measured to determine the degree of matching between the negative liquid crystal composition and the alignment layer. The more stable the voltage maintenance ratio, the higher the degree of matching between the negative liquid crystal composition and the alignment layer, and the higher the quality of the liquid crystal display panel using this combination.
[0125] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the quality control of the color filter substrate (CF) can be strengthened to improve afterimages. For example, during the color filter substrate manufacturing process, cleaning of the color filter substrate can be strengthened to reduce the precipitation of light ions in the color filter substrate, thereby reducing stains caused by ion precipitation in the color filter substrate and improving afterimages caused by excessive impurity ions in the negative liquid crystal composition.
[0126] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the array substrate and the color filter substrate are respectively provided with alignment layers; the alignment layer of the array substrate is formed by friction alignment with cotton cloth; the alignment layer of the color filter substrate is formed by friction alignment with nylon cloth.
[0127] In this embodiment, the alignment layer of the array substrate is rubbed with cotton cloth for alignment, which reduces the number of ions generated by alignment, reduces the number of ions in the liquid crystal composition, and thus reduces image retention. Furthermore, the alignment layer on the color filter substrate side is rubbed with nylon cloth, resulting in a high alignment force on the color filter substrate side, which ensures the alignment strength of the liquid crystal display panel. Therefore, in this embodiment, the liquid crystal display panel can achieve a balance between high alignment strength and low ion count, thereby ensuring high display quality.
[0128] In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the liquid crystal display panel of the present disclosure can also improve the light transmittance of the liquid crystal display panel by optimizing the shape of the electrodes.
[0129] Referring to Figures 2, 3, 5 and 6, the array substrate ARR may include a base substrate BP, a first electrode layer PIXA, an insulating layer PVX and a second electrode layer PIXB stacked in sequence, wherein the first electrode layer PIXA is provided with a lower electrode and the second electrode layer PIXB is provided with an upper electrode cooperating with the lower electrode. Among them, one of the lower electrode and the upper electrode is a pixel electrode, and the other is a common electrode. The lower electrode is a full-surface electrode, and the upper electrode is a slit electrode. In this way, when the liquid crystal display panel is driven, a fringe electric field is generated between the lower electrode and the upper electrode to control the deflection of the liquid crystal molecules in the negative liquid crystal composition. Referring to Figures 3 and 6, the slit electrode is a "horse" shaped electrode. On both sides of the row direction DH of the pixel area where the lower electrode and the upper electrode are located, a data line DataL is provided, and the data line DataL is used to load a driving voltage to the pixel electrode through a pixel driving circuit (such as a driving transistor). The top electrode includes multiple parallel electrode strips, including multiple first electrode strips STPA, at least one second electrode strip STPB, and multiple third electrode strips STPC, arranged sequentially along the column direction DV. The top electrode also includes first connecting sub-electrodes TRA and second connecting sub-electrodes TRB, respectively, located on either side of the top electrode in the row direction. One end of each first electrode strip STPA and one end of each second electrode strip STPB are connected to the first connecting sub-electrode TRA; one end of each third electrode strip STPC and the other end of each second electrode strip STPB are connected to the second connecting sub-electrode TRB. As a result, the gaps between each first electrode strip STPA are closed at the end closest to the first connecting sub-electrode TRA and open at the end remote from the first connecting sub-electrode TRA. The gaps between each third electrode strip STPC are closed at the end closest to the second connecting sub-electrode TRB and open at the end remote from the second connecting sub-electrode TRB. This design reduces the impact of the fringe electric field generated by the first connecting sub-electrodes TRA and the second connecting sub-electrode TRB on liquid crystal alignment, thereby improving the light transmittance of the liquid crystal display panel. Some tests have found that the light transmittance of the pixel area can be increased by 15% to 25%.
[0130] In an example, the first connecting sub-electrode TRA and the second connecting sub-electrode TRB are both arranged in parallel with the adjacent data trace DataL.
[0131] In one example, the orthographic projection of the pixel electrode on the base substrate BP is located within the orthographic projection of the common electrode on the base substrate BP. Furthermore, the upper electrode is the pixel electrode and the lower electrode is the common electrode. In this way, compared to the common electrode, the pixel electrode is retracted in the row direction, and the common electrode can shield the electric field between the pixel electrode and the data line DataL, thereby reducing or eliminating light leakage in the area between the pixel electrode and the data line DataL, and reducing or eliminating crosstalk between black and white images.
[0132] In one example, the electrode strips are arranged obliquely along the row direction. Specifically, the angle (acute angle) between the electrode strips and the row direction is smaller than the angle (acute angle) between the electrode strips and the column direction. Furthermore, the angle between the electrode strips and the row direction is in the range of 3 to 15 degrees.
[0133] In one example, the pretilt angle of the alignment layer can be no more than 0.68°, and the top electrode uses the aforementioned "H"-shaped electrode. This lower pretilt angle of the alignment layer can reduce AC afterimages caused by alignment bias, while the "H"-shaped top electrode can improve the light transmittance of the liquid crystal display panel. The two work together to achieve better display quality.
[0134] In some embodiments of the present disclosure, asymmetric voltage compensation can be used to further improve the display quality of a liquid crystal display panel when driving it. The optimal compensation voltage can be determined through testing. It is understood that differences in pixel electrode structure, alignment layer materials, and other factors can lead to variations in the optimal compensation voltage.
[0135] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the positive and negative voltages can be kept constant and then gradually increased or decreased to observe the residual image results for two hours. The compensation voltage for the LCD panel can then be determined based on the residual image results. Table 5 shows the residual image levels over a two-hour period when driving the LCD panel using different 255-grayscale (maximum grayscale) positive voltages and 255-grayscale negative voltages in a verification test example.
[0136] Table 5: Image retention levels for different positive and negative voltage combinations
[0137] According to the verification test results shown in Table 5 above, it can be seen that when the structure and material of the LCD panel are constant, the afterimage effect presented by the LCD panel has obvious differences when different compensation voltages are used to drive the LCD panel.
[0138] Table 6 shows the adapted compensation voltage and the afterimage effect that can be achieved when the maximum resistivity of the alignment layer (eg, the resistivity of the second sub-layer PIB) is different in a verification test example.
[0139] Table 6: Image retention levels at different maximum resistivity of the alignment layer
[0140] It can be seen from Table 6 that the smaller the maximum resistivity of the alignment layer, the larger the compensation voltage adapted by the liquid crystal display panel (the smaller the absolute value); the smaller the afterimage level that can be achieved, the more obvious the improvement on the afterimage.
[0141] Table 7 shows the voltage compensation values and the afterimage effects that can be achieved when the pixel electrode structures are different in another verification test example.
[0142] Table 7: Image retention levels for different pixel electrode structures
[0143] Table 7 shows that when the top electrode is a common electrode, the compensation voltage is -0.3 V; when the bottom electrode is a common electrode, the compensation voltage is 0.3 V. Regardless of whether the top electrode is a common electrode or a pixel electrode, the level of afterimages achieved by the LCD panel is essentially the same.
