Description

DISINFECTION DEVICE AND SYSTEM FOR PLACEMENT IN OR NEAR A HEAT EXCHANGER UNITCROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION

[0001] The application claims the benefit of priority of Singapore Patent Application No. 10202301880W, filed 30 June 2023, the content of which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety for all purposes.TECHNICAL FIELD

[0002] The present disclosure relates to a disinfection device and system for placement in or near a heat exchanger unit. The disinfection device is suitable, but not limited to, providing disinfection to one or more heat exchangers in public vehicles.BACKGROUND

[0003] The following discussion of the background is intended to facilitate understanding of the present disclosure. However, it should be appreciated that the discussion is not an acknowledgment or admission that any of the material referred to was published, known, or a part of the common general knowledge in any jurisdiction as of the priority date of the application.

[0004] The use of public transportation has always been a cornerstone of urban mobility, providing an efficient and cost-effective means for moving large numbers of people. However, the relatively high density of passengers and the continuous turnover of individuals entering and exiting these vehicles present significant challenges in maintaining sanitary conditions. The spread of infectious diseases, such as influenza, the common cold, and more recently, COVID-19, may be exacerbated in these environments due to the relatively close proximity of passengers and frequent contact with contaminated surfaces.

[0005] Traditional methods of disinfection, including manual cleaning with chemical agents, have been employed to mitigate the spread of pathogens. While effective to some extent, these methods have several drawbacks. Manual cleaning is labor-intensive, time-consuming, and cannot guarantee complete coverage of all surfaces, especially in high-traffic areas and hard-to-reach spots. Additionally, frequent use of chemical disinfectants can lead to health risks for both passengers and cleaning staff, as well as potential damage to the surfaces being cleaned.

[0006] Electromagnetic radiation such as ultraviolet (UV) light has been recognized for its germicidal properties and has been utilized in various disinfection applications. In particular, UV-C radiation, with wavelengths between 200-280 nanometers, may be effective in inactivating a broad spectrum of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, by damaging their DNA and RNA, thus preventing them from replicating. UV-C disinfection systems have been implemented in healthcare settings, water treatment facilities, and HVAC systems. However, their application in mass rapid transit systems has been relatively limited.

[0007] The implementation of UV-C disinfection in public transportation systems, such as mass rapid transit systems, may present some unique challenges. These systems must be designed to operate within the spatial constraints of transit vehicles and must be robust enough to withstand the vibrations and movements inherent to such environments. Additionally, the disinfection module must be capable of operating without direct exposure to passengers, to prevent harmful UV-C exposure, while still ensuring comprehensive disinfection of the vehicle's surfaces.

[0008] To address these challenges, there exists a need for an effective, automated, and safe disinfection module that can be integrated into mass rapid transit vehicles, ensuring continuous and thorough disinfection without interfering with regular operations or posing health risks to passengers and staff.SUMMARY
