Abstract

Example embodiments of the present disclosure relate to devices, methods, and computer storage medium for communication. In the solution, a first device may generate a CW signal based on a first value and a phase rotation value, where the first value is associated with a frequency index, and the phase rotation value is associated with the frequency index and a first time index. In some examples, the frequency index is an index of at least one subcarrier of a frequency range for transmitting the CW signal. In some examples, the first time index is an index of a first OFDM symbol among multiple OFDM symbols within a time range for transmitting the CW signal. As such, the CW signal may be designed or generated based on OFDM waveform framework, in addition, the CW signal may be generated with a single subcarrier and its phase is continuous in multiple OFDM symbols, therefore it is beneficial for the A-IoT device to further generate the backscattered signal.

[0046] The term “circuitry” used herein may refer to hardware circuits and / or combinations of hardware circuits and software. For example, the circuitry may be a combination of analog and / or digital hardware circuits with software / firmware. As a further example, the circuitry may be any portions of hardware processors with software including digital signal processor (s) , software, and memory (ies) that work together to cause an apparatus, such as a terminal device or a network device, to perform various functions. In a still further example, the circuitry may be hardware circuits and or processors, such as a microprocessor or a portion of a microprocessor, that requires software / firmware for operation, but the software may not be present when it is not needed for operation. As used herein, the term circuitry  also covers an implementation of merely a hardware circuit or processor (s) or a portion of a hardware circuit or processor (s) and its (or their) accompanying software and / or firmware.

[0047] As used herein, the singular forms “a” , “an” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. The term “includes” and its variants are to be read as open terms that mean “includes, but is not limited to. ” The term “based on” is to be read as “based at least in part on. ” The term “one embodiment” and “an embodiment” are to be read as “at least one embodiment. ” The term “another embodiment” is to be read as “at least one other embodiment. ” The terms “first, ” “second, ” and the like may refer to different or same objects. Other definitions, explicit and implicit, may be included below.

[0048] In some examples, values, procedures, or apparatus are referred to as “best, ” “lowest, ” “highest, ” “minimum, ” “maximum, ” or the like. It will be appreciated that such descriptions are intended to indicate that a selection among many used functional alternatives can be made, and such selections need not be better, smaller, higher, or otherwise preferable to other selections.

[0049] It is proposed to study a deployment of A-IoT devices in 3GPP system, such as an NR system. To support A-IoT devices in the NR system, some new features should be introduced and studied, such as new waveform, new frame structure, new physical layer and higher layer procedure.

[0050] A-IoT devices have ultra-low power consumption. In terms of energy storage, the A-IoT devices may be pure batteryless devices with no energy storage capability at all, and completely be dependent on the availability of an external source of energy; or the A-IoT devices may be devices with limited energy storage capability that do not need to be replaced or recharged manually.

[0051] The batteryless devices or devices with limited energy storage capability have already been widely used in many real-world applications, e.g., retail, positioning, highway toll charging, etc. For a batteryless device, such as a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag, backscattered communication may be used. FIG. 1 illustrates a schematic diagram of communication 100 of a tag. A reader 110 may transmit a continuous wave to the tag 120, where the reader 110 may also be called as an interrogator and the continuous wave is a pure carrier wave signal without modulated information on it. The tag 120 may harvest the energy from the received continuous wave, and then modulate its information on the wave  and transmit it to the reader 110. For a device with energy storage capability (e.g., a device with solar battery) , the continuous wave may not be needed since the device may have enough power to generate the carrier wave by an oscillator module.

[0052] Before a tag can receive a transmission from a reader, a power-up time is needed. The reader should transmit a radio frequency (RF) signal to energize the tag in this duration. For example, the power-up time for an RFID tag does not exceed maximum settling-time interval of reader, i.e., 1500us.

[0053] FIGS. 2A-2E illustrate some example communication environment in which some embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. The possible deployment scenarios for an A-IoT device in an NR system may be divided into two categories: a monostatic architecture and a bistatic architecture.

[0054] In the present disclosure, a monostatic architecture may involve at least two entities, e.g., a network device and an A-IoT device, or a terminal device and an A-IoT device. A bistatic architecture may involve at least three entities, e.g., a network device, a terminal device and an A-IoT device, or two terminal devices and an A-IoT device.

[0055] In the present disclosure, a transmission link to the A-IoT device may be referred to as a forward link (FL) , in this case, the A-IoT device is a receiver of a transmission from a network device or a terminal device. A transmission link from the A-IoT device may be referred to as a backward link (BL) , in this case, the A-IoT device is a transmitter of a transmission to a network device or a terminal device.

[0056] As shown in FIG. 2A, which illustrates an example environment 210 of a monostatic architecture, a terminal device 211 may perform a transmission to an A-IoT device 212 through an FL, and the A-IoT device 212 may perform a transmission to the terminal device 211 through a BL, for example, the BL transmission may be a response of the FL transmission. As shown in FIG. 2B, which illustrates an example environment 220 of a monostatic architecture, a network device 221 may perform a transmission to an A-IoT device 222 through an FL, and the A-IoT device 222 may perform a transmission to the network device 221 through a BL, for example, the BL transmission may be a response of the FL transmission.

[0057] As shown in FIG. 2C, which illustrates an example environment 230 of a bistatic architecture, a terminal device 231 may perform a transmission to an A-IoT device 232 through an FL, and the A-IoT device 232 may perform a transmission to another terminal device 233 through a BL. As shown in FIG. 2D, which illustrates an example environment  240 of a bistatic architecture, a terminal device 241 may perform a transmission to an A-IoT device 242 through an FL, and the A-IoT device 242 may perform a transmission to a network device 243 through a BL. As shown in FIG. 2E, which illustrates an example environment 230 of a bistatic architecture, a network device 251 may perform a transmission to an A-IoT device 252 through an FL, and the A-IoT device 252 may perform a transmission to a terminal device 253 through a BL.

[0058] The A-IoT devices may be characterized according to their energy storage capacity, and capability of generating RF signals for their transmission. For example, an A-IoT device may have one of the following energy storage capacities: storage capacity a: No storage at all; storage capacity 2: Up to E1 Joules; and storage capacity 3: Up to E2 Joules. It is to be understood that there may be two capacities in case E1=E2. In this case, an A-IoT device with storage capacity 2 / 3 may be a device with a limited energy storage.

[0059] The following sets of A-IoT devices may be considered by relying on these storage capacities:

[0060] - Device A: No energy storage, no independent signal generation / amplification, i.e. backscattering transmission.

[0061] - Device B: Has energy storage, no independent signal generation, i.e. backscattering transmission. Use of stored energy can include amplification for reflected signals.

[0062] - Device C: Has energy storage, has independent signal generation, i.e., active RF components for transmission.

[0063] In some example embodiments, there may be a device which is introduced to charge the A-IoT device. The device may be used to transmit a carrier wave (CW) signal to the A-IoT device, in some examples, the device may be referred to as a CW source device. In some examples, the CW source device may be a terminal device or a network device. For example, the CW source device may be a CW source terminal device, such as a CW source UE.

[0064] The CW signal may be called as a CW for brevity, and the CW signal may be transmitted to the A-IoT device. In some examples, the CW may be used for generating a backscattered signal by the A-IoT device. In some examples, the CW may be used for providing energy source to the A-IoT device. In some examples, the CW may be used for both the two purposes: i.e., generating a backscattered signal by the A-IoT device and providing energy source to the A-IoT device. As an example, the CW is a pure sine or  cosine wave; as another example, the CW is a modulated signal, e.g., an Orthogonal Frequency Divided Multiple (OFDM) signal or a single carrier signal.

[0065] In the present disclosure, a signal transmitted over the FL may be referred to as a forward signal, which may be also referred to as an FL signal, an FL transmission, or the like. In the present disclosure, a signal transmitted over the BL may be referred to as a backscattered signal, which may be also referred to as a BL signal, a BL transmission, a backward signal, a backscattered transmission, a backward transmission, a reflected signal, a reflected transmission, or the like. In the present disclosure, a transmission link from a CW source device to an A-IoT device may be called as a CW link, which may be used for CW signal transmission.

[0066] In some embodiments, the CW signal and / or the backscattered signal may be generated based on an amplitude modulation, which may include any of: amplitude shift keying (ASK) , frequency shift keying (FSK) , or on-off keying (OOK) modulation. An OOK modulation sequence may include at least one OOK ON symbol and at least one OOK OFF symbol. For example, the OOK ON symbol and the OOK OFF symbol may represent symbols with higher and lower amplitude respectively. It is to be understood that an OOK ON symbol is equivalent to a non-zero symbol which is transmitted in a frequency component of FSK modulation, and an OOK OFF symbol is equivalent to a symbol with zero power in a frequency component of FSK modulation.

[0067] As mentioned above, a CW signal may be transmitted to the A-IoT device, however, how to design the CW signal is to be further studied.

[0068] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution of communication. In some examples, the first value may be independent from the OFDM symbols. As such, the CW signal may be designed or generated based on OFDM waveform framework. Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures.

[0069] FIG. 3 illustrates an example communication environment 300 in which some embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. The communication environment 300 may also be called as a network environment, a network system, a communication system, a communication network, or the like, the present disclosure does not limit this aspect. The communication environment 300 includes a first device 310, an A-IoT device 320, a network device 332, and a terminal device 334.

[0070] In the environment 300, the first device 310 may be a CW source device, which may transmit a CW signal to the A-IoT device 320. The CW signal may be used for generating a backscattered signal by the A-IoT device 320, e.g., the A-IoT device 320 may transmit the backscattered signal to a second device, where the backscattered signal may be transmitted over a BL. As shown in FIG. 3, the BL may be from the A-IoT device 320 to the network device 332, from A-IoT device 320 to the terminal device 334, or from A-IoT device 320 to the first device 310. In other words, the second device (for ease of description, may be represented as the second device 330, which may refer to FIG. 4) may be one of: the first device 310, the network device 332, or the terminal device 334.

[0071] It is noted that a type of the first device 310 in the present disclosure is not limited, for example, the first device 310 may be a terminal device or may be a network device.

[0072] FIG. 4 illustrates another example communication environment 400 in which some embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. The communication environment 400 may also be called as a network environment, a network system, a communication system, a communication network, or the like, the present disclosure does not limit this aspect. The communication environment 400 includes a network device 312, a terminal device 314, an A-IoT device 320, and a second device 330.

[0073] In the environment 400, the second device 330 may be a BL receiving device, which may receive a backscattered signal from the A-IoT device 320. The backscattered signal may be generated by the A-IoT device 320 based on a CW signal received from a CW source device (the first device 310) . For example, the A-IoT device 320 may generate a baseband signal of the backscattered signal, and then generate the backscattered signal by modulating the baseband signal of the backscattered signal with the received CW signal. As shown in FIG. 4, the CW signal may be transmitted from the network device 312 to the A-IoT device 320, from the terminal device 314 to the A-IoT device 320, or from the second device 330 to the A-IoT device 320. In other words, the first device (i.e., the first device 310) may be one  of:the network device 312, the terminal device 314, or the second device 330.

[0074] It is noted that a type of the second device 330 in the present disclosure is not limited, for example, the second device 330 may be a terminal device 334 or may be a network device 332.

[0075] Communications in the environment, between a network device and a terminal device for example, between a network device / aterminal device and an A-IoT device for example, may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , the fifth generation (5G) , the sixth generation (6G) , and the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Divided Multiple Address (CDMA) , Frequency Divided Multiple Address (FDMA) , Time Divided Multiple Address (TDMA) , Frequency Divided Duplexer (FDD) , Time Divided Duplexer (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Divided Multiple Access (OFDMA) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0076] Embodiments of the present disclosure can be applied to any suitable scenarios. For example, embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented at reduced capability NR devices. Alternatively, embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented in one of the followings: NR multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) , NR sidelink enhancements, NR systems with frequency above 52.6GHz, an extending NR operation up to 71GHz, narrow band-Internet of Thing (NB-IOT)  / enhanced Machine Type Communication (eMTC) over non-terrestrial networks (NTN) , NTN, UE power saving enhancements, NR coverage enhancement, NB-IoT and LTE-MTC, Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) , NR Multicast and Broadcast Services, or enhancements on Multi-Radio Dual-Connectivity.

[0077] It is to be understood that the numbers of devices and their connection relationships and types shown in FIGS. 3-4 are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation. The environment may include any suitable numbers of devices adapted for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0078] Reference is further made to FIG. 5, which illustrates a signalling chart illustrating communication process 500 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 500 may involve the first device 310 and the A-IoT device 320 as shown in FIG. 3. The first device 310 is a CW source device, which may be a terminal device or a network device. It would be appreciated that the process 500 may be applied to other communication scenarios, which will not be described in detail.

[0079] In some examples, the first device 310 may determine a time resource and a frequency resource for transmitting the CW signal, where the time resource includes a time duration and the frequency resource includes a frequency range. In some examples, the time duration includes multiple OFDM symbols, or includes one or more slots which include multiple symbols. In some examples, the frequency range includes at least one subcarrier, e.g., one subcarrier or multiple subcarriers. In some examples, the frequency range may include one or more physical resource blocks (PRBs) which includes multiple subcarriers.

[0080] In some example embodiments, if the first device 310 is a terminal device, such as the terminal device 314 as shown in FIG. 4, the first device 310 may receive a configuration of a CW signal (i.e., CW configuration) from a network device, such as a serving gNB of the terminal device 314; and the first device 310 may further determine the time resource and the frequency resource based on the configuration of the CW signal.

[0081] In some examples, the configuration of the CW signal may indicate a first OFDM index of the multiple OFDM symbols and a number of the multiple OFDM symbols. In some examples, the configuration of the CW signal may indicate a first slot index of the one or more slots and a number of the one or more slots.

[0082] In some examples, the configuration of the CW signal may indicate the frequency index of the at least one subcarrier. For example, the frequency index of the at least one subcarrier may be represented as k, which may be a positive integer. For example, the configuration of the CW signal may directly indicate the frequency index k. In some other examples, the configuration of the CW signal may indicate the frequency range of the CW signal, e.g., by at least one index of the at least one subcarrier, or by the one or more PRBs.

[0083] In the process 500, the first device 310 determines 510 a frequency index of the at least one subcarrier and multiple time indexes of the multiple OFDM symbols.

[0084] In some implementations, if the first device 310 is a CW source UE, e.g., a terminal device 314, the first device 310 may determine the frequency index k based on the  configuration.

[0085] In some implementations, it is assumed that a single subcarrier is used for transmitting the CW signal, and the frequency index k may be an index of the single subcarrier used for transmitting the CW signal.

[0086] In some implementations, a time index of an OFDM symbol may be represented as l, which is in a range of 0 ~ Nsym-1. In other words, l=0, 1, 2, …, Nsym-1, where Nsym represents a number of OFDM symbols in a sub-frame. For example, Nsym equals to 28 or another value.

[0087] In the process 500, the first device 310 generates 520 the CW signal based on the frequency index of the at least one subcarrier and multiple time indexes of the multiple OFDM symbols.

[0088] In some example embodiments, the CW signal may be generated based on multiple values after resource mapping associated with multiple OFDM symbols, where at least two of the multiple values are different.

[0089] In some implementations, the multiple values may include a second value associated with a first OFDM symbol and a third value associated with a third OFDM symbol. In some examples, the second value is different from the third value.

[0090] In some example embodiments, the second value may be associated with the frequency index (k) and a first time index (l1) of the first OFDM symbol, e.g., the second value may be represented as ak, l1. In some example embodiments, the third value may be associated with the frequency index (k) and a third time index (l3) of the third OFDM symbol, e.g., the third value may be represented as ak, l3.

[0091] In some examples, a first time index of the first OFDM symbol may be determined based on a location of the first OFDM symbol in a sub-frame.

[0092] For ease of description, each of the multiple values may be represented as ak, l, where each value may be mapped to a subcarrier k and an OFDM symbol l . In other words, the value ak, l may be mapped onto a resource element (k, l) .

[0093] In some example embodiments, each of the multiple values may be determined based on a sequence. In some examples, the sequence may be a modulated sequence based on one of: a pseudo-random sequence, a m-sequence, or a Gold sequence. In some examples, the sequence may be a Zadoff-Chu (ZC) sequence. In some examples, the  sequence may be determined based on a cell ID or a device ID (e.g., UE ID) .

[0094] In some example embodiments, a baseband signal of the CW signal s (t) for an OFDM symbol l may be represented as Equation (1) :

[0095] In Equation (1) , k0 represents a frequency offset. For example, k0 equals to zero. For another example, k0 equals to a predefined value which is not zero. For another example, k0 is determined based on a subcarrier spacing (SCS) and the number of the at least one subcarrier. In Equation (1) , Δf represents the subcarrier spacing, e.g., 15 KHz, 30 KHz, 60 KHz, 120 KHz, 240 KHz, etc. In Equation (1) , NCP, l represents a length of cyclic prefix (CP) of the OFDM symbol l. In Equation (1) , TC represents a basic time unit value, for example, TC may equal to a value which represents a reference sampling rate. In Equation (1) , tstart, l represents the start time of the OFDM symbol l. For example, tstart, l=0 if l=0. For example, tstart, l=tstart, l-1+ (Nu+NCP, l-1) ·TC if l is not zero, where Nu is a value associated with the number of samples of the OFDM symbol l without CP, e.g., Nu=2048×P, where P is an integer. For example, the integer may be predefined or preconfigured, e.g., P=1, P=2, or another value. In some examples, Δf=1 / (NuTC) .

[0096] It is to be understood that the baseband signal of the CW signal s (t) for the OFDM symbol l in Equation (1) is only for illustration without any limitation, in some other examples, the baseband signal s (t) may be another function of the value, the present disclosure does not limit this aspect.

[0097] In the process 500, the first device 310 transmits 530 the CW signal 532 to the A-IoT device 320. On the other side of communication, the A-IoT device 320 receives 534 the CW signal 532. In addition or alternatively, the A-IoT device 320 may determine a backscattered signal based on the CW signal 532, and may transmit the backscattered signal to the second device 330.

[0098] FIG. 6 illustrates an example of a CW signal 600 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 6, the CW signal may use a single subcarrier and there may be a non-continuous phase between OFDM symbols. For example, the phase of CW signal for OFDM symbol l is shown in FIG. 6 and is not continuous with the phase of CW signal for OFDM symbol l-1.

[0099] In some example embodiments, in case the continuous phase is not required, some example embodiments with reference to FIG. 5 may be applied, for example, a baseband signal according to Equation (1) cannot guarantee a continuous phase. The CW signal may be used for the A-IoT device 320 to generate a backscattered signal, which will be transmitted to a second device 330, if non-coherent detector is used by the second device 330, a phase continuity may be not needed, in this case, the process 500 may be applied. For example, the non-coherent detector used by the second device 330 may be an energy detector or an envelop detector.

[0100] Reference is further made to FIG. 7, which illustrates a signalling chart illustrating communication process 700 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 700 may involve the first device 310 and the A-IoT device 320 as shown in FIG. 3. The first device 310 is a CW source device, which may be a terminal device or a network device. It would be appreciated that the process 700 may be applied to other communication scenarios, which will not be described in detail.

[0101] In some examples, the first device 310 may determine a time resource and a frequency resource for transmitting the CW signal, where the time resource includes a time duration and the frequency resource includes a frequency range. In some examples, the time duration includes multiple OFDM symbols, or includes one or more slots which include multiple symbols. In some examples, the frequency range includes at least one subcarrier, e.g., one subcarrier or multiple subcarriers. In some examples, the frequency range may include one or more PRBs which includes multiple subcarriers.

[0102] In some example embodiments, if the first device 310 is a terminal device, such as the terminal device 314 as shown in FIG. 4, the first device 310 may receive a configuration of a CW signal (i.e., CW configuration) from a network device, such as a serving gNB of the terminal device 314; and the first device 310 may further determine the time resource and the frequency resource based on the configuration of the CW signal.

[0103] In some examples, the configuration of the CW signal may indicate a first OFDM index of the multiple OFDM symbols and a number of the multiple OFDM symbols. In some examples, the configuration of the CW signal may indicate a first slot index of the one or more slots and a number of the one or more slots.

[0104] In some examples, the configuration of the CW signal may indicate the frequency index of the at least one subcarrier.

[0105] The first device 310 may determine a frequency index of the at least one subcarrier and multiple time indexes of the multiple OFDM symbols.

[0106] In some implementations, if the first device 310 is a CW source UE, e.g., a terminal device 314, the first device 310 may determine the frequency index k based on the configuration.

[0107] In some implementations, it is assumed that a single subcarrier is used for transmitting the CW signal, and the frequency index k may be an index of the single subcarrier used for transmitting the CW signal.

[0108] In some implementations, a time index of an OFDM symbol may be represented as l , which is in a range 0~L-1. In some example embodiments, one of the multiple time indexes of the multiple OFDM symbols may be represented as an OFDM symbol l, where l=0, 1, 2, …L-1 , and L is the number of OFDM symbols in a time duration for transmitting the CW signal. In some examples, the time duration may be associated with the subcarrier. For example, the time duration may be a duration that the CW signal is transmitted with a specific subcarrier, if the subcarrier is changed at a beginning of an OFDM symbol, then the OFDM symbol can be seen as the start of another time duration. For example, in case a frequency hopping is configured, l may be re-numbered from 0 for another different subcarrier.

[0109] In the process 700, the first device 310 generates 710 the CW signal based on the frequency index of the at least one subcarrier and multiple time indexes of the multiple OFDM symbols. In some implementations, if a single subcarrier is used for transmitting the CW signal, and the frequency index (k) may be an index of the single subcarrier used for transmitting the CW signal.

[0110] In some example embodiments, the CW signal may be generated based on a first value and a phase rotation value. In some examples, the first value is associated with the frequency index, in some examples, the first value is independent from the time index. For example, the first value is identical for different OFDM symbols within the time duration.

[0111] In some examples, the phase rotation value is associated with the frequency index  of the at least one subcarrier within a frequency range and a first time index of a first OFDM symbol. For example, the first OFDM symbol is one of the multiple OFDM symbols within the time duration.

[0112] In some examples, the first value is determined based on a cell ID or a device ID (e.g., UE ID) . In some examples, the first value is determined based on a further value configured by a network device. In some other examples, the first value may be determined based on a sequence.

[0113] For ease of description, the first value may be represented as ak . In some examples, the value ak may be a complex-valued symbol, a modulated symbol, or an integer (such as 1) . In some examples, ak=ej2πω, where ω is determined based on the cell ID, the UE ID, or the further value configured by a network device. For example, ωis a function of one or more of: the cell ID, the UE ID, or the further value configured by a network device. In some examples, ak may be the kth value in a sequence, where the sequence is determined based on one or more of: the cell ID, the UE ID, or the further value configured by a network device.

[0114] In some examples, the phase rotation value is associated with the frequency index (k) and the first time index (l) , for example, it may be represented as In some examples, the phase rotation value may be determined based on one or more of the following: a length of CP associated with the first time index of the first OFDM symbol, a further phase rotation value associated with the frequency index and a second time index of a second OFDM symbol, where the second time index is one less than the first time index, a predefined phase rotation value, a carrier frequency used in upconversion, a subcarrier spacing, a reference sampling rate, or the frequency index.

[0115] For example, a length of CP associated with the first time index of the first OFDM symbol may be represented as NCP, l. For example, a further phase rotation value associated with the frequency index and a second time index of a second OFDM symbol (where the second time index is one less than the first time index) may be represented as which is applied when l>0. For example, a predefined phase rotation value may be 0 or another value, the subcarrier spacing may be represented as Δf, the reference sampling rate may be represented as TC. For example, the carrier frequency used in upconversion may be represented as f0.

[0116] In some example embodiments, a baseband signal of the CW signal s (t) for an  OFDM symbol l may be represented as Equation (2) :

[0117] In Equation (2) , k0 represents a frequency offset. For example, k0 equals to zero. For another example, k0 equals to a predefined value which is not zero. For another example, k0 is determined based on a SCS and the number of the at least one subcarrier. In Equation (2) , Δf represents the subcarrier spacing. In Equation (2) , NCP, l represents a length of CP of the OFDM symbol l. In Equation (2) , TC represents a basic time unit value, for example, TC may equal to a value which represents a reference sampling rate. In Equation (2) , tstart, l represents the start time of the OFDM symbol l . For example, tstart, l=0 if l=0 . For example, tstart, l=tstart, l-1+ (Nu+NCP, l-1) ·TC if l is not zero, where Nu is a value associated with the number of samples of the OFDM symbol l without CP, e.g., Nu=2048×P , where P is an integer. For example, the integer may be predefined or preconfigured, e.g., P=1, P=2, or another value. In some examples, Δf=1 /  (NuTC) .

[0118] In Equation (2) , ak, l is a value which is determined based on the first value and the phase rotation value, e.g.,  In some examples, the phase rotation value  may be determined by one of Equations (3) - (6) :

[0119] In some implementations, an upconversion may be further performed by the first device 310. In some example embodiments, the upconversion may be performed based on a carrier frequency (f0) , or based on the carrier frequency and a length of CP of the first OFDM symbol (NCP, l) .

[0120] In some example embodiments, the first device 310 may determine a time domain carrier frequency signal based on an upconversion method In some  examples, the phase of carrier wave may be not continuous for some of the physical channels / signals, for example, some of the physical channels / signals may use  in the upconversion. In some examples, different upconversion methods may be used for the CW signal and for other channel / signal. In some examples, it is up to the implementation of the first device 310 to determine how to implement the upconversion for the CW signal and other channel / signal simultaneously.

[0121] In some other example embodiments, the first device 310 may use the upconversion method for the CW signal. In some examples, the phase rotation value of the CW signal may be compensated by the first device 310, for example, the phase rotation value may be determined based on one of Equations (7) -(10) :

[0122] In other words, the phase rotation value in Equations (3) - (6) may be replaced by Equations (7) - (10) respectively. In Equations (7) - (10) , the carrier frequency f0 is considered.

[0123] It is to be understood that the baseband signal of the CW signal s (t) for the OFDM symbol l in Equation (2) is only for illustration without any limitation, in some other examples, the baseband signal s (t) may be another function of the value, the present disclosure does not limit this aspect.

[0124] In some implementations, the first device 310 may generate the baseband signal of the CW signal in a legacy manner, e.g., based on an Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) operation. In some implementations, during a resource mapping procedure, the first device 310 may map the value ak, l (which is determined based on the first value and the phase rotation value) on to a resource element (k, l) . For example, if the first device 310  transmits another channel / signal in one or more subcarriers that are not used for the CW signal, the value ak, l may be mapped on to a resource element (k, l) .

[0125] In the process 700, the first device 310 transmits 720 the CW signal 722 to the A-IoT device 320. On the other side of communication, the A-IoT device 320 receives 724 the CW signal 722. In addition or alternatively, the A-IoT device 320 may determine a backscattered signal based on the CW signal 722, and may transmit the backscattered signal to the second device 330.

[0126] FIG. 8 illustrates an example of a CW signal 800 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 8, the CW signal may use a single subcarrier and there may be a continuous phase between OFDM symbols. For example, the phase of CW signal for OFDM symbol l is shown in FIG. 8 and is continuous with the phase of CW signal for OFDM symbol l-1.

[0127] According to some embodiments with reference to FIG. 7, the CW signal may be generated with a single subcarrier and its phase is continuous in multiple OFDM symbols, therefore the CW signal can be similar as a continuous wave (i.e., a pure carrier) , and it is beneficial for the A-IoT device to modulate its information onto the input CW signal. In addition, the phase continuity may be important if the second device utilizes a coherent detector, and the phase continuity is beneficial for peak to average power ratio (PAPR) and spectrum localization of the CW signal, therefore there may be a higher output power, and an interference to the backscattered signal may be reduced.

[0128] In some implementations, the process 500 and the process 700 may be used when a single subcarrier is utilized for the CW signal. In some other implementations, multiple subcarriers may be utilized for the CW signal. In some examples embodiments, the first device 310 may determine multiple indexes of the multiple subcarriers and a time duration for transmitting the CW signal; in addition, the first device 310 may map the symbols onto the multiple subcarriers and generate the OFDM symbol.

[0129] FIG. 9 illustrates an example of a CW signal 900 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 9, the symbol of the CW signals may be mapped onto the multiple subcarriers 910. In some examples, other channel / signal may be mapped to some other subcarriers which are not used for transmitting the CW signal. In some examples, an IFFT operation and a CP insertion operation may be further performed.

[0130] In some examples, there may be one or more guard bands between the CW signal and a further signal. FIG. 10 illustrates a signalling chart illustrating communication process 1000 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 1000 may involve a first device 310 and an A-IoT device 320 as discussed in FIG. 3. It would be appreciated that the process 1000 may be applied to other communication scenarios, which will not be described in detail.

[0131] In the process 1000, the first device 310 determines 1010 that a CW signal and at least one further signal are to be transmitted. For example, the CW signal is to be transmitted to the A-IoT device 320. In some example embodiments, the CW signal and the at least one further signal are to be transmitted in a frequency-division multiplexing (FDM) manner.

[0132] In some examples, the first device 310 may determine a time resource and a frequency resource for transmitting the CW signal, where the time resource includes a time duration and the frequency resource includes the frequency range.

[0133] In some example embodiments, if the first device 310 is a terminal device, such as the terminal device 314 as shown in FIG. 4, the first device 310 may receive a configuration of a CW signal (i.e., CW configuration) from a network device, such as a serving gNB of the terminal device 314; and the first device 310 may further determine the time resource and the frequency resource based on the configuration of the CW signal.

[0134] In some examples, the configuration of the CW signal may indicate the first OFDM index of the multiple OFDM symbols and a number of the multiple OFDM symbols. In some examples, the configuration of the CW signal may indicate a first slot index of the one or more slots and a number of the one or more slots.

[0135] In some examples, the configuration of the CW signal may indicate the frequency index of the at least one subcarrier.

[0136] In some implementations, if the first device 310 is a CW source UE, e.g., a terminal device 314, the first device 310 may determine the frequency index k based on the configuration.

[0137] In some examples, the frequency index k may be a smallest one among the at least one index of the at least one subcarrier, or may be a largest one among the at least one index of the at least one subcarrier, or may be a middle one among the at least one index of the at least one subcarrier.

[0138] In some examples, for the single carrier scheme, an integer N1 may be used to represent a number of subcarriers in the one or more PRBs, in this case, the frequency index k may be an integer that is not larger than or not smaller than N1 / 2. For example, k=N1 / 2, k=floor (N1 / 2) or k=ceil (N1 / 2) . For example, N1 may be 12, indicating that there are 12 subcarriers in a PRB.

[0139] In some other examples, for multi-carrier scheme, the frequency index k may indicate the first subcarrier of the CW signal, or may indicate a center subcarrier of the CW signal. In some examples, an integer N1 may be used to represent a number of subcarriers in the one or more PRBs and integer N2 may be used to represent a number of subcarriers (i.e., the number of the at least one subcarrier in the frequency range) for the CW signal, in this case, the frequency index k may be an integer that is not larger than or not smaller than (N1-N2)  / 2. For example, k= (N1-N2)  / 2 , k=floor ( (N1-N2)  / 2) , or k=ceil ( (N1-N2)  / 2) . For example, k=N1 / 2, k=floor (N1 / 2) or k=ceil (N1 / 2) .

[0140] In some example embodiments, a frequency hopping may be configured for the CW signal. In some examples, the frequency index may be associated with a time index of an OFDM symbol, for example, the frequency index may be represented as k (l) .

[0141] In some examples, the frequency index may be associated with a time index of an OFDM symbol k (l) may be determined based on an initial index of a first subcarrier, and an offset associated with the time index.

[0142] In some examples, the initial index may be an initial subcarrier index which is independent from the time index l, for example, the initial index may be represented as k0, which is the same for all time indexes (l) . In some examples, the initial index k0 may be determined in a similar way described above without a configured frequency hopping. In  some examples, the first device 310 may be a terminal device (such as the terminal device 314) , and the initial index k0 may be configured or indicated by a network device, such as a serving gNB of the terminal device 314.

[0143] In some examples, the offset may be determined based on one or more of: the first time index of the first OFDM symbol, an integer predefined or preconfigured, a number of subcarriers in a configured resource pool, or a subcarrier spacing (SCS) configuration.

[0144] For example, the offset associated with the time index may be represented as h (l) , which indicates that the offset h is a function of l . As an example, the offset may be determined as h (l) =l. As another example, the offset may be determined as h (l) =l×Q, or where Q is an integer. As another example, the offset may be determined based on a predefined or preconfigured table, where the table indicates an association of the offset and the time index.

[0145] For example, the first device 310 may determine a frequency domain resource pool, e.g., the first device 310 may receive a configuration indicating the frequency domain resource pool configured by a network device if the first device 310 is a terminal device. For example, the frequency domain resource pool may indicate multiple subcarriers, e.g., Ns subcarriers. For example, the first device 310 may determine the frequency index associated with the time index k (l) within the frequency domain resource pool. For example, k (l) may be the lth subcarrier within the frequency domain resource pool. For example k (l) = (k0+h (l) ) mod Ns, where k0 is a value smaller than the total number of subcarriers Ns.

[0146] With the frequency hopping, the CW signal may occupy different frequency resources along with time, therefore the interference to other transmission can be randomized (i.e., avoid always interfering a specific frequency range) .

[0147] In the process 1000, the first device 310 may determine 1020 at least one guard band between the CW signal and the at least one further signal. In some example embodiments, the at least one guard band may include a first guard band and / or a second guard band, where the first guard band is lower than the frequency range for the CW signal and the second guard band is higher than the frequency range for the CW signal. In some implementations, a frequency index associated with the frequency range for the CW signal may be determined, e.g., the frequency index may be represented as k, which may be determined as above.

[0148] In some examples, the first guard band is located on the lower side of the frequency range for the CW signal, and the second guard band is located on the upper side of the frequency range for the CW signal.

[0149] In some implementations, if the A-IoT device 320 uses a double sideband (DSB) modulation for the backscattered signal, the first device 310 may determine that the at least one guard band comprises a first guard band and a second guard band. In some implementations, if the A-IoT device 320 uses a single sideband (SSB) modulation for the backscattered signal, the first device 310 may determine that the at least one guard band comprises the first guard band or the second guard band. For example, if the A-IoT device 320 uses the lower sideband of a SSB modulation for the backscattered signal, the first device 310 may determine that the at least one guard band comprises the first guard band. For another example, if the A-IoT device 320 uses the upper sideband of a SSB modulation for the backscattered signal, the first device 310 may determine that the at least one guard band comprises the second guard band.

[0150] In some example embodiments, the first guard band and / or the second guard band may be determined based on a configuration of a backscattered signal, which is to be transmitted by the A-IoT device 320 to the second device 330 based on the CW signal. In some examples, the configuration of the backscattered signal may include one or more of: a bandwidth of the backscattered signal, a modulation method used for generating the backscattered signal, a symbol duration of a modulated symbol of the backscattered signal, or an encoding scheme of the backscattered signal.

[0151] In some example embodiments, the first guard band may include a first number of subcarriers, the second guard band may include a second number of subcarriers. For example, the first number may be represented as N and the second number may be represented as M, where M and N are integers. For example, M=N or M≠N.

[0152] In some examples, the first guard band may start from an adjacent subcarrier (e.g., k-1) of the CW signal to a subcarrier with a frequency (e.g., k-N) lower than the subcarrier k. For example, the first guard includes the subcarriers k-N to k-1. For example, subcarrier k is the lowest subcarrier in the frequency range for the CW signal.

[0153] In some examples, the second guard band may start from an adjacent subcarrier (e.g., k+1) of the CW signal to a subcarrier with a frequency (e.g., k+M) higher than the subcarrier k. For example, the second guard includes the subcarriers k+1 to k+M. For example,  subcarrier k is the highest subcarrier in the frequency range for the CW signal.

[0154] In some examples, the first device 310 may map non-zero values onto the subcarrier k, and do not map non-zero values (in other words, map zero values) onto the subcarriers in the at least one guard band, and then generate the OFDM symbol (s) .

[0155] In the process 1000, the first device 310 transmits 1030 the CW signal 1032 to the A-IoT device 320, and accordingly the A-IoT device 320 receives 1034 the CW signal 1032.

[0156] In some examples, if at least part of the at least one further signal is to be overlapped with the at least one guard band, the first device 310 may cancel a transmission of the at least one further signal. For example, if the first device 310 is a terminal device, and if a transmission (e.g., a PUSCH, PUCCH, PSSCH, PSCCH etc., ) is overlapped in time and frequency with the at least guard band, then the first device 310 (aterminal device) may determine to cancel the transmission.

[0157] In some examples, the first device 310 may further transmit the at least one further signal on the subcarriers that not used by the CW signal.

[0158] FIG. 11A illustrates an example of at least guard band 1110 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 11A, the CW signal is transmitted on the subcarrier k, and there are a first guard band 1112 from subcarrier k-N to subcarrier k-1 and a second guard band 1114 from subcarrier k+1 to subcarrier k+M.

[0159] FIG. 11B illustrates an example of at least guard band 1120 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 11B, the CW signal is transmitted on the subcarrier k, and there is a first guard band 1122 from subcarrier k-N to subcarrier k-1.

[0160] FIG. 11C illustrates an example of at least guard band 1130 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 11C, the CW signal is transmitted on the subcarrier k, and there is a second guard band 1134 from subcarrier k+1 to subcarrier k+M.

[0161] According to some embodiments with reference to FIG. 10, at least one guard band may be determined by the first device 310. With the guard band, there will no overlap between the backscattered signal and other signal (may be transmitted by the first device 310 or other device) , therefore an interference can be avoided.

[0162] It is to be understood the process 1000 may be combined with the process 500 or  process 700 described above. In some examples, some further example embodiments may be obtained by combining the process 500 / 700 and the process 1000, for example, a baseband signal of the CW signal may be determined by Equation (1) or (2) and at least one guard band is further determined.

[0163] Reference is further made to FIG. 12, which illustrates a signalling chart illustrating communication process 1200 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 1200 may involve an A-IoT device 320 and a second device 330 as described in FIG. 4. The process 1200 may further involve a network device 301, which may be a serving network device (e.g., a serving gNB) of the second device 330. In some examples, the second device 330 may be a terminal device.

[0164] In the process 1200, the network device 301 transmits 1210 a configuration of a CW signal 1212 to the second device 330. In some examples, the configuration 1212 may indicate a time resource and a frequency resource for transmitting the CW signal, for example, the CW signal is transmitted by the first device 310 to the A-IoT device 320. In some examples, the first device 310 and the second device 330 may be a same terminal device. In some examples, the CW signal may be used by the A-IoT device 320 to generate a backscattered signal, which will be transmitted to the second device 330.

[0165] The second device 330 determines 1220 at least one index of at least one subcarrier used for the CW signal based on the configuration 1212.

[0166] In some examples, a single subcarrier may be used for the CW signal, and the configuration 1212 may indicate the index of the single subcarrier. In some examples, multiple subcarriers may be used for the CW signal, and the configuration 1212 may indicate an index of a first (or a last or a middle) subcarrier among the multiple subcarriers and a number of the multiple subcarriers. In some examples, multiple subcarriers may be used for the CW signal, and the configuration 1212 may indicate a first index of the first subcarrier and a second index of the last subcarrier.

[0167] In the process 1200, the second device 330 determines 1230 a frequency range of a backscattered signal. In some implementations, the frequency range of the backscattered signal may be determined based on one or more of: a first central frequency of the CW signal determined based on the at least one index of the at least one subcarrier used for the CW signal, a second central frequency of baseband signal of the backscattered signal, a first bandwidth of the CW signal, or a second bandwidth of the backscattered signal.

[0168] In some examples, a first central frequency of the CW signal may be represented as fCW. In some examples, a second central frequency of the baseband signal of the backscattered signal may be represented as fBL. In some examples, a first bandwidth of the CW signal may be represented as BWCW. In some examples, a second bandwidth of the backscattered signal may be represented as BWBL. In some examples, fCW or fBL may be a subcarrier index or a frequency value, and BWBL or BWCW may be a number of subcarriers or a frequency value.

[0169] In some implementations, the second device 330 may determine, based on a configuration of the A-IoT device 320, the second central frequency of the baseband signal of the backscattered signal fBL, e.g., the center frequency of the upper sideband, or the opposite number of the center frequency of the lower sideband. In some implementations, the second device 330 may determine, based on a configuration of the A-IoT device 320, the second bandwidth of the backscattered signal BWBL , e.g., the bandwidth of the upper sideband or lower sideband. In some examples, fBL and BWBL may be determined based on the OOK symbol parameters, e.g., the symbol duration of OOK ON or OFF symbol, the encoding scheme of the information bit of the backscattered signal, etc.

[0170] In some implementations, the frequency range of the backscattered signal may include a first part and a second part, in some examples, each of the first part and the second part may have a bandwidth equaling to a sum of the first bandwidth and the second bandwidth.

[0171] In some examples, a center frequency of the frequency range of the backscattered signal, or the upper edge and lower edge of the frequency range of the backscattered signal, may be determined by fCW+foffset or fCW-foffset , where foffset indicates a frequency offset value. In some examples, the frequency offset value foffset may be indicated by the network device 301. In some examples, the frequency offset value foffset may be determined based on a configuration of the A-IoT device 320.

[0172] In some example embodiments, the frequency offset value foffset may be determined based on fBL and / or BWBL.

[0177] FIG. 14 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 1400 implemented at a first device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the first device which may perform the method 1400 can be the first device 310 with reference to FIG. 3, which may be a terminal device or a network device.

[0178] At block 1410, the first device generates a CW signal being used to generate a backscattered signal by an A-IoT device, where the CW signal is generated based on: a first value associated with a frequency index of at least one subcarrier used for transmitting the CW signal, and a phase rotation value associated with the frequency index of the at least one subcarrier within a frequency range for transmitting the CW signal and a first time index of a first OFDM symbol, where the first OFDM symbol is one of multiple OFDM symbols within a time duration used for transmitting the CW signal. At block 1420, the first device  transmits, to the A-IoT device, the CW signal.

[0179] In some example embodiments, the first value is identical for different OFDM symbols among the multiple OFDM symbols within the time duration.

[0180] In some example embodiments, the first device performs an upconversion for the CW signal based on a carrier frequency.

[0181] In some example embodiments, the first device performs an upconversion for the CW signal based on a carrier frequency and a length of CP of the first OFDM symbol.

[0182] In some example embodiments, the first device determines the phase rotation value associated with the frequency index and the first time index based on at least one of: a length of CP associated with the first time index of the first OFDM symbol, a further phase rotation value associated with the frequency index and a second time index of a second OFDM symbol, where the second time index is one less than the first time index, a predefined phase rotation value, a carrier frequency used in upconversion, a subcarrier spacing, a reference sampling rate, or the frequency index.
