Abstract
Description
battery pack
[0001] The present disclosure relates to a battery pack.
[0002] Recently, demand for mobile devices such as smartphones, tablet PCs, and wireless earphones has been increasing. Furthermore, with the development of electric vehicles, energy storage batteries, robots, and satellites in full swing, research is actively underway on high-performance secondary batteries capable of repeated charging and discharging as an energy source.
[0003] Currently commercially available secondary batteries include nickel-cadmium batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries, nickel-zinc batteries, and lithium secondary batteries. Among these, lithium secondary batteries offer advantages over nickel-based batteries, including virtually no memory effect, free charging and discharging, a very low self-discharge rate, and high energy density.
[0004] Lithium secondary batteries can experience thermal runaway due to mechanical, electrical, or thermal abnormalities, or internal short circuits. If the separator between the anode and cathode of a lithium secondary battery is damaged, the stored electrochemical energy is spontaneously released along with heat generation when the cathode and anode come into contact.
[0005] Meanwhile, a battery pack may be defined as a storage device including one or more battery cells, a BMS (Battery Management System), various control devices (e.g., a cooling device), and a protection system. [0047] Hereinafter, the present disclosure will be described in detail with reference to the attached drawings. However, these are merely exemplary and the present disclosure is not limited to the specific embodiments described as examples.
[0048] Among the properties mentioned in this disclosure, if the measurement temperature affects the properties, the properties are properties measured at room temperature and pressure unless otherwise specified.
[0049] The term room temperature used in this disclosure refers to a natural temperature that is not heated or cooled, and may mean, for example, any temperature within the range of 10°C to 30°C, for example, a temperature that is about 15°C or higher, about 18°C or higher, about 20°C or higher, about 23°C or higher, about 27°C or lower, or 25°C. Unless specifically defined in this disclosure, the unit of temperature is Celsius (°C).
[0050] Among the properties mentioned in this disclosure, if the measurement pressure affects the property, the property is a property measured at atmospheric pressure unless otherwise specified.
[0051] The term atmospheric pressure used in this disclosure refers to natural pressure that is neither pressurized nor depressurized, and typically refers to atmospheric pressure within the range of about 700 mmHg to 800 mmHg.
[0052] The terms a to b used in this disclosure mean a and b inclusive, and within a range between a and b. For example, including a to b by weight means including within a range of a to b by weight.
[0053] The terms thickness (or height), width and depth used in this disclosure mean average values unless specifically stated otherwise, and measurements can be made according to a method known in the art using a measuring device capable of measuring thickness (or height), width and depth, respectively.
[0054] The present disclosure can provide a battery pack (1) that can effectively prevent the thermal propagation phenomenon (see FIG. 1). Furthermore, the present disclosure can provide a battery pack (1) that can effectively dissipate heat generated from a battery cell (210). Furthermore, the present disclosure can provide a battery pack (1) that is lightweight yet has excellent durability. Furthermore, the present disclosure can provide a battery pack (1) with improved airtightness.
[0055] FIG. 1 is a drawing briefly showing a part of the structure of a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure.
[0056] A battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure may include a storage device (20) including a battery cell (210). In the present disclosure, the storage device (20) may be the battery cell (210) itself. Alternatively, the storage device (20) may be a battery cell (210) stack comprising a plurality of battery cells (210) that are electrically connected to each other. Alternatively, the storage device (20) may refer to a battery module that includes one or more battery cells (210) and includes a cover that can protect the battery cells (210) from external impact while housing them. However, in another example, even if the storage device (20) is built into the cover, the cover of the contact surface may not be provided so that one surface of the battery cell (210) can be in direct contact with the plate (10) or thermal conductive layer (50) described later (see FIG. 1 and FIG. 15).
[0057] In the above, the meaning of being electrically connected to each other may mean a state in which an electric circuit is formed when the objects to be connected are connected by a connecting means, so that current can flow to each of the connected objects. The connecting means is not particularly limited as long as it is capable of electrical connection, but may be direct contact between the objects to be connected or a wire through which current can flow. In the case where a plurality of battery cells (210) are provided in the storage device (20) and are electrically connected to each other, the battery cells (210) may be electrically connected to each other in series, parallel, or a combination thereof.
[0058] Meanwhile, in the battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, the structure of the battery cell (210) may be known. The battery cell (210) may have a structure in which an electrode assembly is embedded within an outer material and filled with an electrolyte. In another example, the battery cell (210) may include an electrode and a solid electrolyte layer, and the solid electrolyte layer may have a separator function. A battery cell (210) including the solid electrolyte layer may be referred to as an all-solid battery.
[0059] In a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, the electrode assembly may include an electrode. The term "electrode" may encompass a positive electrode and a negative electrode. The electrode assembly may include a separator. The separator may be interposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode.
[0060] The cathode may refer to a reduction electrode through which an electron transport material receives electrons when the battery cell (210) is discharged. The anode refers to an oxidation electrode through which an electron transport material transfers electrons when the battery cell (210) is discharged. In addition, the separator refers to a membrane through which an electron transport material passes while preventing an electrical short circuit between the anode and the cathode.
[0061] Additionally, the battery cell (210) may have a structure in which the electrode assembly is housed within a sealed space made of an outer material and filled with an electrolyte. The term "sealed space," as used herein, refers to a closed space that prevents liquid substances from leaking to the outside when present in the space.
[0062] The above electrolyte refers to a medium that facilitates the movement of electron transport substances to facilitate the electrochemical reaction between the positive and negative electrodes. The above electrolyte generally includes an organic solvent and a lithium salt, and the organic solvent and lithium salt may include those known in the art.
[0063] The above is classified into several types depending on the type of electron transport material. For example, if the electron transport material is lithium (including Li ions), the battery is called a lithium ion battery.
[0064] In addition, as described above, the outer packaging material can protect the electrode assembly from external impact and prevent the electrolyte from leaking out (i.e., sealing it). Depending on the shape of the outer packaging material, the battery cell (210) can be classified into a square shape, a cylindrical shape, or a pouch shape.
[0065] A battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure may include a plate (10) having a mounting portion (110) on which the storage device (20) is mounted. Referring to FIG. 1, the battery pack (1) may include a plate (10) having a mounting portion (110) on which the storage device (20) is mounted. The shape of the plate (10) may be determined in consideration of the shape of the storage device (20). Although not limited to a specific shape, for example, if the surface where the storage device (20) and the plate (10) contact each other is a square, the overall shape of the plate (10) may be a square.
[0066] In a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, the plate (10) may have a through hole (120) at least in a portion of the plate. One or more through holes (120) may be provided in the plate (10). In addition, the through hole (120) is a hole that penetrates the plate (10), and its shape is not particularly limited. When the plate (10) has the through hole (120), heat transfer through the plate (10) can be partially suppressed, effectively preventing a heat transfer phenomenon. Heat transfer through the plate (10) may mean conduction. Referring to FIG. 1, in the battery pack (1), the plate (10) may have a through hole (120) at least in a portion of the plate.
[0067] In a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, at least a portion of a through hole (120) of a plate (10) may be covered with a sealant (130). That is, the battery pack (1) may include a sealant (130), and the sealant (130) may cover at least a portion of the through hole (120). In addition, the sealant (130) may cover at least a portion of a plurality of through holes (120), and may cover at least a portion of each through hole (120). In the present disclosure, covering a through hole (120) may mean covering the through hole (120) so as to reduce a penetrated area of the through hole (120).
[0068] Meanwhile, in a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, the through hole (120) of the plate (10) may be entirely covered with a sealant (130). That is, the battery pack (1) may include a sealant (130), and the sealant (130) may cover the entire through hole (120). In the above, the fact that the through hole (120) is entirely covered may mean that the entire penetrated area of the through hole (120) is covered.
[0069] Fig. 2 is a simplified diagram showing a part of the structure of a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, and is a drawing showing a part of the structure along the XZ plane in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a simplified diagram showing a part of the structure of a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, and is a drawing showing another example of Fig. 2.
[0070] Referring to FIG. 2, in a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, at least a portion of a through hole (120) of a plate (10) may be covered with a sealant (130) on at least one side. Specifically, referring to FIG. 2, in a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, the through hole (120) of a plate (10) may be entirely covered with a sealant (130) on one side.
[0071] Referring to FIG. 3, in a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, at least a portion of the through hole (120) of the plate (10) may be covered with a sealant (130) on both sides. Specifically, referring to FIG. 3, in a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, the through hole (120) of the plate (10) may be completely covered with a sealant (130) on both sides.
[0072] FIG. 4 is a simplified diagram showing a part of the structure of a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, and is a drawing showing a part of the structure along the XY plane in FIG. 1. FIG. 5 is a simplified diagram showing a part of the structure of a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, and is a drawing showing another example of FIG. 4.
[0073] Referring to FIG. 4, in a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, at least a portion of a through hole (120) of a plate (10) may be covered with a sealant (130). In addition, the sealant (130) may not only cover the through hole (120), but may also cover the surrounding area of the through hole (120). In addition, for convenience of processing, the sealant (130) may be provided continuously without being interrupted as shown in FIG. 4, so as to cover at least a portion of the through hole (120).
[0074] Referring to FIG. 5, in a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, the sealant (130) may cover not only the through hole (120) but also the plate (10) other than the area where the through hole (120) is formed. Specifically, the sealant (130) may cover at least one surface of the plate (10) other than the area where the through hole (120) is formed. In addition, the sealant (130) may further cover the outer surface of the plate (10). Referring to FIG. 5, the sealant (130) may further cover not only the through hole (120) but also the outer surface of the plate (10). In this way, when the sealant (130) covers not only the through hole (120) but also the plate (10) other than the area where the through hole (120) is formed, the plate (10) may be lightweight while ensuring excellent durability.
[0075] In a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, the through hole (120) may be provided in an area that does not overlap with the mounting portion (110). Referring to FIG. 1, the through hole (120) may be provided in an area that does not overlap with the mounting portion (110). That is, the storage device (20) mounted on the mounting portion (110) may not be mounted on the through hole (120).
[0076] In a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, the sealant (130) may be provided in an area that does not overlap with the mounting portion (110). Referring to FIG. 5, the sealant (130) covers the outer surface of the plate (10), and at the same time, the sealant (130) covers the through hole (120). Here, the mounting portion (110) may be provided in an area that does not overlap with the sealant (130). That is, the storage device (20) mounted on the mounting portion (110) may not be mounted on the sealant (130).
[0077] In a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, a plate (10) may include a plurality of mounting portions (110). That is, a plurality of storage devices (20) may be mounted on each mounting portion (110) on the plate (10).
[0078] Meanwhile, in the battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, the through hole (120) may be provided between adjacent mounting portions (110). Referring to FIGS. 1, 4, and 5, the through hole (120) is provided between adjacent mounting portions (110). When the through hole (120) is provided between adjacent mounting portions (110) in the battery pack (1), the heat transfer phenomenon occurring in the battery cell (210) can be effectively prevented. For example, due to thermal runaway occurring in one storage device (20), heat can be transferred to another adjacent storage device (20) through the plate (10), and the through hole (120) acts as a resistance to heat transfer in the heat transfer path, so that the heat transfer phenomenon can be effectively prevented.
[0079] In a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, the plate (10) may include a plurality of through holes (120), and each of the through holes (120) may be at least partially covered with a sealant (130). Referring to FIGS. 1, 4, and 5, the plate (10) includes a plurality of through holes (120), and each of the through holes (120) may be at least partially covered with a sealant (130). Furthermore, in another example, the plate (10) may include a plurality of through holes (120), and each of the through holes (120) may be entirely covered with a sealant (130).
[0080] In a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, the sealant (130) may include an adhesive. The adhesive may be a resin having adhesive properties in itself or a resin that exhibits adhesive properties through a curing or polymerization reaction. In addition, the adhesive may be a room temperature curing type, a thermosetting type, a hot melt type, a pressure-sensitive type, a dehumidifying type, a water type, or a solvent type. In addition, the adhesive is not particularly limited as long as it exhibits adhesive properties at room temperature and can be used in the art, but may include at least one selected from the group consisting of epoxy resins, acrylic resins, urethane resins, phenol resins, vinyl-phenol resins, epoxy-phenol resins, polyvinyl acetate, polyester resins, glue, and starch. In addition, the adhesive may preferably include at least one selected from the group consisting of epoxy resins, acrylic resins, vinyl-phenol resins, and epoxy-phenol resins.
[0081] In a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, the sealant (130) may have an appropriate viscosity at room temperature. The appropriate viscosity may mean a viscosity at which, when the sealant (130) is positioned as shown in FIG. 2 to cover the through hole (120), a portion of the sealant (130) passes through the through hole (120) and the shape of the sealant (130) is not collapsed.
[0082] *Figure 6 is a drawing that simply illustrates a part of the structure of a pack frame (40) of a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure. The battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure may include a pack frame (40) that surrounds a storage device (20). When the battery pack (1) includes a plurality of storage devices (20), the pack frame (40) may surround each of the storage devices (20). The pack frame (40) may be configured by combining and connecting several members in consideration of the contents to be described later, or may be configured in an integral form through a process such as extrusion.
[0083] Referring to FIG. 6, a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure may include a first frame (410) and a second frame (420). The first frame (410) and the second frame (420) may be connected to each other through welding, bonding (such as brazing), adhesion, or a fastening means (such as rivets or bolts / nuts).
[0084] Also, referring to FIG. 6, in a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, the first frame (410) may be positioned along a first direction, and the second frame (420) may be positioned along a second direction. The first direction and the second direction may be different directions, for example, referring to FIG. 6, the first direction may be the y direction and the second direction may be the x direction. Also, the angle formed by the first direction and the second direction may be determined according to the shape of the storage device (20), and may be, for example, perpendicular to each other (see FIG. 6).
[0085] In addition, referring to FIG. 6, in a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, the pack frame (40) may include a space (430) formed by a first frame (410) and a second frame (420). The first frame (410) and the second frame (420) may be connected to each other so that the storage device (20) positioned on the plate (10) of the battery pack (1) enters the formed space (430). That is, the first frame (410) and the second frame (420) may be connected so that the storage device (20) is surrounded by the first frame (410) and the second frame (420).
[0086] Referring to FIG. 6, in a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, the pack frame (40) may include a first separating frame (410a) that divides a zone across a space (430) formed by the first frame (410) and the second frame (420). In addition, the pack frame (40) may include a second separating frame (420a) that divides a zone across a space (430) formed by the first frame (410) and the second frame (420). In addition, the pack frame (40) may include a first separating frame (410a) and a second separating frame (420a).
[0087] Also, referring to FIG. 6, in a battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, the first separation frame (410a) may be positioned along a third direction, and the second separation frame (420a) may be positioned along a fourth direction. The third direction and the fourth direction may be different directions, for example, referring to FIG. 6, the third direction may be the y direction and the fourth direction may be the x direction. Also, an angle formed by the third direction and the fourth direction may be determined depending on the shape of the storage device (20), and may be, for example, perpendicular to each other (see FIG. 6).
[0088] Meanwhile, in the battery pack (1) according to an example of the present disclosure, the first separation frame (410a) of the pack frame (40) may be positioned parallel to the first frame (410). That is, the first direction and the third direction may be the same direction.
