Description

Multi-Stage Device Disengagement from a DockBACKGROUND

[0001] Computing devices, such as tablet computers (“tablets”), are generally planar devices that include a touch-screen display. They may be battery powered and can be connected with a dock, for example, to charge a battery of the tablet, supply power to the tablet, for data transfer, for audio playback, and / or to be physically supported, such as in an upright position. However, removing a tablet from a dock can be a frustrating experience, especially if the tablet occasionally falls. Such an occurrence can result in damage to the tablet.SUMMARY

[0002] Various embodiments are described related to a method of undocking. In some embodiments, a method of undocking is described. The method may comprise determining, by a tablet dock system, an intent to undock a tablet computer from a dock. The method may comprise, in response to determining the intent to undock the tablet computer from the dock, changing a polarity of a first group of electropermanent magnets such that an attractive force between the tablet computer and the dock weakens. The method may comprise, after changing the polarity of the first group of electropermanent magnets, changing the polarity of a second group of electropermanent magnets such that the attractive force between the tablet computer and the dock further weakens.

[0003] Embodiments of such a method may include one or more of the following features: waiting a defined period of time after changing the polarity of the first group of electropermanent magnets prior to changing the polarity of the second group of electropermanent magnets. The tablet computer may comprise a plurality of magnets that may magnetically couple with the first and second groups of electropermanent magnets. The intent to undock the tablet computer may be determined using a strain gauge. The intent to undock the tablet computer may be determined by comparing a measurement made by the strain gauge compared to a predefined threshold value. The method may further comprise, after changing the polarity of the first group of electropermanent magnets, determining that a sufficient force is being applied by a user to the tablet computer prior to changing the polarity of the second group of electropermanent magnets. The dock may further comprise a plurality of permanent magnets that magnetically couple with a second plurality of permanent magnets of the tablet computer. The method may further comprise, after changing the polarity of the first group of electropermanent magnets, pivoting the tablet computer such that an edge of the dock may be used as a fulcrum to pivot the tablet computer. The method may further comprise, after changing the polarity of the second group of electropermanent magnets, changingthe polarity of the first group and the second group of electropermanent magnets again to return each group of electropermanent magnets to be attractive to magnets of the tablet computer. The first group and the second group of electropermanent magnets may be incorporated as part of a plurality of magnet modules. Each magnet module may comprise at least one electropermanent magnet and at least one permanent magnet.

[0004] In some embodiments, a device dock system is described. The system may comprise a dock housing. The system may comprise a mating system attached with the dock housing and configured to allow a tablet computer to be detachably docked with the mating system. The mating system may comprise a magnet system comprising a plurality of electropermanent magnets that may generate a magnetic field. The mating system may comprise a sensor that outputs a signal indicative of an intent to undock. The mating system may comprise a processing system configured to generate control signals based on an output of the sensor. The control signals may control reversal of polarity of the plurality of electropermanent magnets.

[0005] Embodiments of such a system may include one or more of the following features: the processing system may be configured to determine the intent to undock the tablet computer from the mating system based on an output of the sensor. The processing system may be further configured to transmit a first control signal in response to determining the intent to undock the tablet computer from the dock. The first control signal may cause a polarity of a first group of electropermanent magnets of the plurality of electropermanent magnets to be reversed such that an attractive force between the tablet computer and the mating system weakens. The processing system may be configured to transmit a second control signal after transmitting the first control signal in response to determining the intent to undock the tablet computer from the dock. The second control signal may cause a polarity of a second group of electropermanent magnets of the plurality of electropermanent magnets to be reversed such that the attractive force between the tablet computer and the mating system may further weaken. The processing system may be configured to wait a defined period of time after transmitting the first control signal to transmit the second control signal. The system may further comprise the tablet computer that comprises a plurality of magnets that may magnetically couple with the first and second groups of electropermanent magnets. The sensor may be a strain gauge. The processing system may be configured to compare a strain gauge measurement made by the strain gauge to a predefined threshold value to determine the intent to undock the tablet computer from the mating system. The processing system may be further configured to, after transmitting the first control signal, determine that a sufficient force is being applied by a user to the tablet computer prior to changing the polarity of the second group of electropermanent magnets. The dock may further comprise aplurality of permanent magnets that may magnetically couple with permanent magnets of the plurality of magnets of the tablet computer. The processing system may be further configured to cause the polarity of the first group and the second group of electropermanent magnets to be changed again to return each group of electropermanent magnets to be attractive to magnets of the tablet computer after changing the polarity of the second group of electropermanent magnets.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0016] Electronic devices, such as a tablet, may be detachably docked, for example, to supply power, for data transfer, for audio playback, and / or to be physically held, such as in an upright position. As detailed herein, a dock or docking mechanism for docking tablets or other forms of electronic devices can include magnet systems which, for example, include arrangements of electronically controllable magnets. For example, electropermanent magnets (EPMs), which include a special configuration of magnetic materials where the external magnetic field can be reversed by applying a current pulse, may be used. A tablet and / or a dock may include a set of magnets that magnetically couple with magnets in the dock and / or tablet, respectively, where at least some of the magnets are electronically controllable.

[0017] A user may occasionally desire to remove the tablet from the dock. In order to do so, the user may pull the tablet away from the dock with sufficient force to overcome the attractive force exhibited by the magnet system. Such a magnet system must be strong enough to hold the tablet firmly in place, but weak enough to allow a user to separate the dock and tablet when desired. As detailed herein, a multi-stage magnetic release arrangement can be used to transition support of the tablet from the dock to the user.

[0018] Such an arrangement can allow a user more confidence in safely removing the tablet. Rather than a sudden, perhaps surprising, release of the tablet from the dock, the dock can reverse the polarity of at least some EPMs in stages. This arrangement can encourage the user to pivot the tablet in a particular direction and / or signal to the user that the undocking processing is occurring, triggering the user to tightly grip and gently remove the tablet. Further, by reversing the polarity of at least some EPMs, the amount of force needed to be applied by the user to remove the tablet from the dock decreases, allowing for a smoother process. For example, such a docking arrangement may save the user from having to hold the dock in place while removing the tablet.

[0019] According to various embodiments described herein, a user may signal an intent to undock or initiate a process to undock an electronic device, such as a tablet, from a dock which may, in turn, control states of EPMs of the electronic device and / or the dock. The polarity of the EPMs may be controlled according to a predetermined sequence or timing profile to generate a desired magnetic attraction timing profile. In some embodiments, the user may further signal that the undocking process has progressed, and the dock may control states of the magnets implemented into the electronic device and / or the dock. The states of the magnets may be controlled according to a predetermined sequence or timing profile to generate a desired magnetic attraction timing profile.

[0020] In some embodiments, the electronic device is a tablet computer (or “tablet”) that is a component of a tablet computer system. In some embodiments, a tablet computer serves as a home assistant device and / or hub to manage smart home devices in an environment. The tablet computer may be able to charge and output audio via the dock, record video, communicate with a remote server system, and interact with users via spoken communications. For example, a home assistant device may provide automated control or voice control of devices, appliances, and systems, such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (“HVAC”) systems, lighting systems, home theater, entertainment systems, as well as security systems. Smart home networks may include control panels that a person may use to input settings, preferences, and scheduling information that the smart home network uses to provide automated control of the various devices, appliances, and systems in the home. For example, the person may input a schedule indicating when the person is away from the home, and the smart home network uses this information along with information obtained from various devices in the home to detect unauthorized entry when the user is away. The tablet computer may be left docked with a dock to charge its battery and use other features of the dock, such as an integrated speaker or record video and audio (e.g., for security purposes). The tablet computer may be removed from the dock for convenience to be used or displayed at another location. When not in use (whether docked, not docked, or both), photos or photo albums selected by a user may be presented by the tablet.

[0021] Many other types of electronic devices may benefit from the various aspects and features described herein. For example, smartphones, laptop computers, gaming devices, e-readers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), digital paper tablets, and smart picture frames that can be removably attached with a base or another device may benefit from various embodiments discussed herein. Furthermore, the electronic device may be an assistant device (e.g., Google® Nest® Hub; Google® Nest® Hub Max); a home automation controller (e.g., controller for an alarm system, thermostat, lighting system, door lock, motorized doors, etc.); a gaming device (e.g., a gaming system, gaming controller, data glove, etc.); a communication device (e.g., a smart phone such as a Google® Pixel® Phone, cellular phone, mobile phone, wireless phone, portable phone, radio telephone, etc.); and / or other computing device (e.g., a tablet computer, phablet computer, notebook computer, laptop computer, etc.).

[0022] FIG. 1 illustrates a block diagram of an embodiment of a tablet dock system 100. Tablet dock system 100 can include a computing device, such as tablet computer 102, a dock 104, a network 106; and cloud-based server system 108. In some embodiments, sensors 116 may be used to detect signals indicating that the undocking process has progressed. In some aspects, sensor 116 can be used to determine the orientation of the tablet computer 102 to the ground based on the acceleration of gravity and can be used to determine movement of the tablet computer 102.

[0025] Magnet system 124 may include one or more magnets arranged to magnetically couple with corresponding one or more magnets of magnet system 138 of the dock. Magnet system 124 and magnet system 138 may also be used to align the tablet computer 102 with the dock 104 during docking, such as to ensure that electric contacts of the dock and tablet are properly aligned. Magnet system 124 (or magnet system 138) may include one or more electronically controllable magnets, such as EPMs. Magnet system 124 and magnet system 138 may also include one or more permanent magnets which are not electronically controllable.

[0026] Wireless interface 120 is in communication with processing system 110 and allows for communication with various wireless networks and / or wireless devices using one or more communication protocols. Wireless interface 120 may allow for communication with a Wi-Fi based wireless local area network. Wireless interface 120 can allow for communication directlywith other devices, such as via Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), or some other low-power device-to-device communication protocol. In some embodiments, wireless interface 120 allows for communication with a wearer’s smartphone, thus allowing information collected using the tablet computer 102 to be analyzed by and presented using the wearer’s smartphone.

[0027] In some embodiments, electronic display 118 may be present. In various aspects, the electronic display 118 may display any visual information associated with any applications running on the tablet computer 102. Electronic display 118 can allow for information determined based on data collected from the various sensors of the tablet computer 102 to be directly presented to a user. For example, the electronic display 118 may display information or commands associated with smart home devices, social media applications, internet searches, weather applications, news applications, etc.

[0028] Generally, the dock 104 can include a housing (e.g., a dock housing) that houses some or all of the components of the dock 104. The dock 104 can include a processing system 130. Processing system 130 can include one or more processors configured to perform various functions. Processing system 130 can include one or more special-purpose or general-purpose processors. Such special-purpose processors may include processors that are specifically designed to perform the functions detailed herein. Such special-purpose processors may be ASICs or FPGAs which are general-purpose components that are physically and electrically configured to perform the functions detailed herein. Such general-purpose processors may execute specialpurpose software that is stored using one or more non-transitory processor-readable mediums, such as random-access memory (RAM), flash memory, a hard disk drive (HDD), or a solid-state drive (SSD).

[0029] Dock 104 may include one or more sensors 136, which can be one of the types listed for sensor 116 located on the tablet computer 102. Dock 104 may include a mating system 137, embodiments of which are described in more detail elsewhere herein. The dock 104 may include a speaker 140 to output auditory media and / or audio feedback to commands, and a wireless network interface 132 similar to wireless interface 120.

[0030] During undocking, an electronic device and a dock experience various forces. One or more sensors 136, according to various embodiments described herein, may be integrated with and located near a face of the dock and / or at an opposing face of the electronic device. When the electronic device is not being undocked, the sensor detects a signal indicative of an unloaded condition. In contrast, when an electronic device is being undocked, a face or another portion of the dock or of the electronic device deforms in response to the forces applied by the user as part ofthe undocking process. Sensors 136 detect the deformation and a signal indicative of the undocking condition is generated in response to the deformation. For example, during undocking, lifting the electronic device may cause a deformation of the face or other portion of the dock and / or the electronic device to be in a particular direction, indicating that the electronic device is being removed from the dock. The deformation may be sensed and used to trigger an undocking signal.

[0031] In various embodiments, sensors 136 can include strain gauges and generate the signals indicative of an intent to undock the tablet computer from the dock. In various embodiments, the sensors 136 are configured to detect signals which are indicative of undocking and are differentiated from other interactions with the electronic device / dock such as screen taps, presses, swipes, button presses, dock rotations, etc. Implementing sensors for detecting changes in forces indicative of undocking advantageously results in a better user experience, with a more natural “grab and go” signal to undock.

[0032] In various embodiments, sensor 136 is a strain gauge. Strain gauges have a variable resistance depending on the force applied. These changes may be read with an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) when an excitation voltage is applied and a strain gauge is used in a resistor divider, in at least some embodiments. In some embodiments, a Wheatstone bridge configuration comprising four strain gauges and amplifier may be used for relatively more accurate measurements of signals detected by the strain gauges. In one embodiment, four strain gauges form a Wheatstone full-bridge circuit such that an output voltage is indicative of a deformation of the strain gauges corresponding to the electronic device docking and undocking from the dock. In some embodiments, a Wheatstone quarter-bridge or a Wheatstone half-bridge may be formed by strain gauges. Strain gauges are low cost, low power, and relatively small. Accordingly, in some embodiments, a plurality of strain gauges may be used. For example, a plurality of strain gauges may be used for temperature compensation, to increase sensitivity of the structure, to measure a different part of the structure, etc. Multiple strain gauges may be used to act as a load cell, as would be appreciated by one having ordinary skill in the art.

[0033] In other aspects, sensors 136 can include a gyroscope, an accelerometer, a barometer (e.g., for detecting squeezing or changes in air pressure within an electronic device when the electronic device is grasped and lifted), a weight sensor, or another sensor. An electronic device and / or a dock as described throughout the present disclosure may include any combination of the foregoing sensors, controllers, and magnet modules. For example, either or both of a dock and an electronic device may include a strain gauge and either or both of the dock and the electronicdevice may include a barometer. In another example, either or both of the dock and the electronic device may include both a strain gauge and an accelerometer.

[0034] In various embodiments, sensors 136 may be associated with thresholds for determining whether a signal is indicative of undocking. Hardcoded thresholds may be used to determine an undocking event. In other aspects, a machine learning model may be trained on user interaction data to determine whether there is an undocking intent or event based on signals received from the sensors. Thresholds and / or thresholds determined by a machine learning model may be used to determine if there is an undocking event and an electronic device / dock system adjusts the state of the electronic device and / or the dock accordingly.

[0035] In at least some implementations, sensor 136 is one component of a signaling and detecting undocking intent system. For example, sensor data may be used in combination with data and / or signals gathered from one or more of a camera, a microphone, a presence, a touch, a button, etc.

[0036] Sensor 136 may be configured to detect a change in force indicative of an undocking the electronic device from the dock. For example, sensor 136 may be configured to detect a change in a force directed into the face of the dock and / or a change in a force directed out of the face of the dock. In particular, lifting the electronic device from the dock (e.g., undocking) may result in a force detected by the sensor and directed out of the face of the dock. In contrast, a force may be detected by the sensor and directed into the face of the dock. One or more sensors 136 may also be used to detect a pivoting force being applied by the user to the tablet, such as a user applying torque to the tablet by pivoting the tablet using edge 505 (as seen in FIG. 5) as a fulcrum.

[0037] In some embodiments, touch characteristics of a user touching an electronic display 118 (e.g., a touch screen display) of an electronic device, such as a tablet computer, may be used as an indication of an undocking event. For example, to provide a more intuitive and improved undocking experience, the touch sensing system of the electronic device may be designed, programmed, or taught to interpret touch input indicative of an undocking intent or event. For example, when a touch event occurs, the x / y position and / or the major / minor axes and rotation angle may be used to determine whether an electronic device is being undocked from a dock. For example, when a user grabs an electronic device with the intent to undock the electronic device, the user’s thumb typically applies a force having certain detectable characteristics to a location around the left / top / right of the screen. Accordingly, bounds on the x / y may be used and indications of the characteristics of the force may be used.

[0038] In another example, the thumb leaves a larger touch area than when an index finger is used to interact with the electronic device. A detected touch surface area may be used to signal intent to undock the electronic device. In yet another example, a rotation angle may be associated with a large touch surface area (e.g., from using the thumb compared to using an index finger) and indicative of a grasping motion around the electronic device and undocking the electronic device. In other aspects, multi-touch characteristics may be used to indicate intent to undock the electronic device from the dock. For example, one embodiment may use touch areas on both the left side and the right side of the electronic device. In yet another aspect, invisible touch areas or discrete buttons may be used. In another aspect, touch areas may only be shown and / or are active during certain events such as a new presence detection or predetermined swiping motions.

[0039] While not illustrated, dock 104 can be connected with a power source, such as an outlet, and can be used to transfer power to tablet computer 102 via electrical contacts when tablet computer 102 is connected. This power can be used to charge a rechargeable battery of tablet computer 102.

[0040] Processing system 130 may be configured to receive a signal indicating an intent to undock or an initiation portion of a process to undock the tablet computer 102 from the dock 104. The signal may be initiated, for example, by either or both of sensors 116 and 136. In response to receiving the signal, processing system 130 may be configured to generate one or more electronic signals for mating system 137. Processing system 130 may be configured to receive an additional signal indicating that the undocking process has progressed.

[0041] Mating system 137 includes magnet system 138, and a controller 139. The controller 139 may be configured to receive the electronic signals from processing system 130 and to generate one or more control signals for the magnet system 138. The control signals may cause the magnetic field of the magnet modules to at least one of increase, decrease, become substantially zero, and change north / south polarity (e.g., of EPMs). For example, in some embodiments, the controller 139 comprises a pulse generator, and the one or more control signals comprise one or more current and / or voltage pulse signals which cause one or more variable magnetic components of the magnet modules to reverse its north / south polarity.

[0042] In various embodiments, other sensors or components (not shown) may be located on the dock 104. For example, one or more environmental sensors may be incorporated into the dock 104 and can include a light sensor, a microphone for receiving audio input from a user, a temperature sensor, etc. In some embodiments, multiple instances of some or all of these sensors may be present. A camera and / or humidity sensor may be incorporated into the dock 104 and / or the tabletcomputer 102. As another example, active infrared sensors may be included. In some embodiments, some data, such as humidity data, may be obtained from a nearby weather station that has data available via the Internet. In some embodiments, active acoustic sensing methods, including, but not limited to, sonar and ultrasound, and including either single or arrayed acoustic sources and / or receivers may be implemented. Such arrangements may be used as one or more adjunct sensing modalities incorporated with the other sensors and methods described herein.

[0043] Additionally, or alternatively, other forms of wireless communication may be possible, such as using a low-power wireless mesh network radio and protocol (e.g., Thread) to communicate with various smart home devices. In some embodiments, a wired network interface, such as an Ethernet connection, may be used for communication with a network. Further, the evolution of wireless communication to fifth generation (5G) and sixth generation (6G) standards and technologies provides greater throughput with lower latency which enhances mobile broadband services. 5G and 6G technologies also provide new classes of services, over control and data channels, for vehicular networking (V2X), fixed wireless broadband, and the Internet of Things (loT). Such standards and technologies may be used for communication by the tablet computer 102.

[0044] The low-power wireless mesh network radio and protocol may be used for communicating with power limited devices. A power-limited device may be an exclusively battery powered device. Such devices may rely exclusively on one or more batteries for power and, therefore, the amount of power used for communications may be kept low in order to decrease the frequency at which the one or more batteries need to be replaced. In some embodiments, a powerlimited device may have the ability to communicate via a relatively high-power network (e.g., WiFi) and a low-power mesh network. The power-limited device may infrequently use the relatively high-power network to conserve power. Examples of such power-limited devices include environmental sensors (e.g., temperature sensors, carbon monoxide sensors, smoke sensors, motion sensors, presence detectors) and other forms of remote sensors.

[0045] Notably, some embodiments of the tablet computer 102 do not have any still camera or video camera. By not incorporating an onboard camera, users nearby may be reassured about their privacy. For example, the tablet computer 102 can typically be installed in a user’s bedroom. For many reasons, a user would not want a camera located in such a private space or aimed toward the user while the user is sleeping. In other embodiments, the tablet computer 102 may have a camera, but the camera’s lens may be obscured by a mechanical lens shutter. In order to use the camera, the user may be required to physically open the shutter to allow the camera to have a view of theenvironment of the tablet computer 102. The user can be assured of privacy from the camera when the shutter is closed.

[0046] Wireless network interface can allow for wireless communication with network 106. Network 106 can include one or more public and / or private networks. Network 106 can include a local wired or wireless network that is private, such as a home wireless LAN. Network 106 may also include a public network, such as the Internet. Network 106 can allow for the tablet computer 102 to communicate with remotely located cloud-based server system 108.

[0047] Cloud-based server system 108 may additionally or alternatively provide other cloudbased services. For instance, the tablet computer 102 may additionally function as a home assistant device. A home assistant device may respond to vocal queries from a user. In response to detecting a vocal trigger phrase being spoken, the tablet computer 102 may record audio. A stream of the audio may be transmitted to cloud-based server system 108 for analysis. Cloud-based server system 108 may perform a speech recognition process, use a natural language processing engine to understand the query from the user, and provide a response to be output by the tablet computer 102 as synthesized speech, an output to be presented on electronic display 118, and / or a command to be executed by the tablet computer 102 (e.g., raise the volume of the tablet computer 102) or sent to some other smart home device. Further, queries or commands may be submitted to cloud-based server system 108 via electronic display 118, which may be a touchscreen. For instance, the tablet computer 102 may be used to control various smart home devices or home automation devices. Such commands may be sent directly by the tablet computer 102 to the device to be controlled or may be sent via cloud-based server system 108. Another possible service that cloud-based server system 108 may provide is video (and / or audio) recording.

[0048] FIG. 2 illustrates an embodiment of an electronic device 200 that is configured to dock with a dock using magnets. The electronic device 200 can be a tablet computer or, more specifically, a tablet computer that serves as a home assistant device or hub as previously detailed. One or more magnets may be hidden within the electronic device 200 behind rear surface 202. Electronic device 200 includes multiple contact pads 220 (e.g., metallic pads) that are conductive and are used to transfer data with and / or obtain power from a dock when electronic device 200 is in a docked position. As illustrated, four contact pads 220 are present. In other embodiments, a greater or fewer number of contact pads 220 may be present. The arrangement of contact pads 220 can also vary by embodiment. In other embodiments, rather than using contact pads, some other form of electrical contact may be used, such as pins or a combination of pads and pins. Other components, such as camera 230, may be present on or accessible through rear surface 202.

[0049] FIG. 3 illustrates a rear view of an embodiment of a system 300 that includes an electronic device 302 docked with a dock 304. The dock 304 connects with the electronic device 302 via one or more magnets of dock 304 that magnetically connect corresponding magnets of the electronic device 302. When coupled, the electronic device 302 can be suspended off of surface 306, upon which a base 308 of the dock 304 rests. Accordingly, edge 310 may not touch surface 306 when the electronic device 302 is docked with the dock 304.

[0050] The dock 304 magnetically couples with the electronic device 302 within the region of rear surface 312. Since the connection is magnetic, a user may pull the electronic device 302 away from the dock 304 to remove. To mate, the user may move the electronic device 302 close to the dock 304. Once close, the magnets of the electronic device 302 and magnets of the dock 304 may help guide the electronic device 302 into the proper alignment on the dock 304. When docked, contact pads (such as contact pads 220 in FIG. 2) contact corresponding pins (or another form of electrical contact) present on the mating surface of the dock 304.

[0051] In some embodiments, one or more electronically controllable magnets may be present within the dock 304 that can be engaged or disengaged. When engaged, such magnets provide an attraction force attracting the electronic device 302 and the dock 304. When disengaged, the magnets may provide less attraction force attracting the electronic device 302 and the dock 304 than when engaged, may provide no or substantially no attraction force attracting the electronic device 302 and the dock 304, or may provide a repulsive force acting to separate the electronic device 302 and the dock 304.

[0052] FIG. 4 illustrates a side view of a system 400 that includes an embodiment of an electronic device. As can be seen from the side view, the electronic device 302 is docked with dock 304. Mating surface 402 indicates where the rear surface 312 of the electronic device 302 contacts the dock 304.

[0053] Within region 404, a first plurality of magnets is present within the electronic device 302. In corresponding locations within region 406, a second plurality of magnets is present within the dock 304. The magnets are arranged such that, when brought into proximity, the magnets of the electronic device 302 attract to the magnets of the dock 304 to help correctly position and align the dock 304 against the electronic device 302 and hold the electronic device 302 in a correct position on the dock 304. In other aspects, regions 404 and 406 may extend further upward on the dock 304 and / or extend the length of the dock 304 which contacts the electronic device 302. For example, regions 404 and 406 may be any size and located at any location on the electronic device 302 and / or the dock 304.

[0054] FIG. 5 illustrates possible locations of a first group of magnet modules 510, a second group of magnet modules 512, and a sensor 502 on dock 304, according to some implementations of the present disclosure. FIG. 5 illustrates a front top view of the implementation shown in FIG. 4 having the magnet modules 510 and 512, and sensor 502 located on a face 504 of dock 304.

[0055] The magnet modules of the first and second groups of magnet modules 510 and 512 can be configured to receive one or more control signals. In response to control signals, each of the magnet modules is configured to generate a magnetic field corresponding with the received control signal. For example, control signals may cause the magnetic field of the magnet modules to at least one of increase, decrease, become substantially zero, and change north / south polarity.Accordingly, the control signals may cause the attractive force between an electronic device and the dock 304 to either: increase, decrease, become substantially zero, and become negative so that the force between the electronic device and the dock 304 is repulsive. Alternatively, one or more magnet modules may include only permanent magnets, thus resulting in the magnet module creating a fixed attractive force.

[0056] In some embodiments, the magnet modules 510 of the first group are controlled independently of the magnet modules 512 of the second group. For example, control signals applied to the magnet modules 510 of the first group may cause the magnetic field of the magnet modules 510 to change states while control signals applied to the magnet modules 512 of the second group may cause the magnetic field of the magnet modules 512 to maintain their states. Likewise, control signals applied to the magnet modules 512 of the first group may cause the magnetic field of the magnet modules 512 to change states while control signals applied to the magnet modules 510 of the first group may cause the magnetic fields of the magnet modules 510 to maintain their states.

[0057] In some embodiments, the magnet modules 510 and 512 form a single group. In some embodiments, the magnet modules 510 and 512 are divided so as to form more than two groups. In some embodiments, each particular magnet module forms a “group” having only the one particular magnet module. The number of magnet modules forming a group is not limited. In some embodiments, either the magnet modules 510 of the first group or the magnet modules 512 of the second group, or the magnet modules of another group are or include fixed magnets.

[0058] In some embodiments, the sensor 502 is positioned to measure force applied at or near the center of the face 504. Although one sensor 502 is shown, in other embodiments at least two sensors 502, at least three sensors 502, at least four sensors 502, etc., may be implemented into theface 504 of the dock 304. For example, in one aspect, four sensors 502 are implemented into the face 504 of the dock 304 and are arranged at relative right angles (90°) to each other.

[0059] In some embodiments, one or more of the sensors 502 located on the face 504 of the dock 304 may be used to detect signals indicative of shear force resulting from the user beginning a process of undocking the electronic device from the face 504 of the dock 304, such as by the user pulling electronic device 302 away from dock 304 or attempting to slide electronic device 302 along face 504 of dock 304. One of the sensors 502 may be used to detect shear force in combination with one or more sensors 502 which detect changes in other forces or pressure distribution.

[0060] In some embodiments, a sensor, such as sensor 502 or another sensor may sense an intent to undock or an initiation portion of a process to undock the electronic device from dock 304, and, in response, may generate a sense signal indicative of the sensed event. In some embodiments, in response to the sense signal, a controller may be configured to generate control signals which change a magnetic state of the first and second groups of magnet modules 510 and 512.

[0061] In some embodiments, a sensor, such as sensor 502 or another sensor may sense an intent to undock or an initiation portion of a process to undock the electronic device from dock 304, and, in response, may generate a sense signal indicative of the sensed event. In some embodiments, in response to the sense signal, a controller may be configured to generate control signals which change a magnetic state of the first group of magnet modules 510 and 512. In some embodiments, a sensor, such as sensor 502 or another sensor may sense that the undocking process has progressed, and, in response, may generate an additional sense signal indicative of the sensed event. In some embodiments, in response to the sense signal, a controller may be configured to generate control signals which change a magnetic state of the second group of magnet modules 510 and 512.

[0062] For example, in response to the sense signal, the controller may be configured to generate first control signals which cause one or more electropermanent magnets within each magnet module of the first group of magnet modules 510 to change magnetic states (e.g., reverse polarity) such that the attractive force between the magnet modules 510 and the electronic device weakens or reverses to become a repulsive force. In some embodiments, in response to the sense signal, the controller may be configured to generate second control signals which cause one or more electropermanent magnets within each magnet module of the second group of magnet modules 512 to change magnetic states such the attractive force between the magnet modules 512 and the electronic device weakens or reverses to become a repulsive force.

[0063] FIG. 6 illustrates a magnet module 600, according to some implementations of the present disclosure. Magnet module 600 includes magnets 602, 604, 606, 608, 610, and 612. Each of magnets 602-612 may be or include one or more of an electropermanent magnet (EPM), an electromagnet, a permanent magnet, a magnet which is not electronically controllable, a ferrite magnet, a temporary magnet, a soft magnet, a metal alloy magnet, a neodymium iron boron magnet, a samarium cobalt magnet, an aluminum nickel cobalt magnet, and one or more other types of magnets.

[0064] In some embodiments, one or more of magnets 602-612 are a first type of magnet, and one or more others of magnets 602-612 are a second type of magnet. For example, in some embodiments, one or more of magnets 602-612 are electronically controllable, such as an EPM, and one or more others of magnets 602-612 are a permanent magnet or are not electronically controllable.

[0065] For example, in some embodiments, magnets 602, 606, 608, and 612 are permanent magnets or are not electronically controllable, and magnets 604 and 610 are electronically controllable magnets, such as electropermanent magnets. Alternatively, in some embodiments, magnets 604 and 610 are permanent magnets or are not electronically controllable, and magnets 602, 606, 608, and 612 are electronically controllable magnets.

[0066] In some embodiments, one or more permanent magnets or not electronically controllable magnets of magnet module 600 are oriented opposite one or more others of the permanent magnets or not electronically controllable magnets of magnet module 600. For example, one or more of the permanent magnets or not electronically controllable magnets may be positioned so as to have a south to north orientation into the page, as illustrated, and one or more others of the permanent magnets or not electronically controllable magnets may be positioned so as to have a south to north orientation out of the page, as illustrated.

[0067] For example, in some embodiments, magnets 604 and 610 are EPMs, magnets 602 and 606 have a south to north orientation into the page, as illustrated, and magnets 608, and 612 have a south to north orientation out of the page, as illustrated. Alternatively, in some embodiments, magnet 604 is a permanent magnet or a not electronically controllable magnet having a south to north orientation out of the page, as illustrated, magnet 610 is a permanent magnet or a not electronically controllable magnet having a south to north orientation into the page, as illustrated, and magnets 602, 606, 608, and 612 are electronically controllable magnets.

[0068] In some embodiments, when the magnet module 600 is configured to generate its maximum magnetic force to attract the electronic device, one or more electronically controllable magnets of magnet module 600 are oriented opposite one or more others of the electronically controllable magnets of magnet module 600. For example, when the magnet module 600 is configured to generate its maximum magnetic force to attract the electronic device, one or more of the electronically controllable magnets may be positioned so as to have a south to north orientation into the page, as illustrated, and one or more others of the electronically controllable magnets may be positioned so as to have a south to north orientation out of the page, as illustrated.

[0069] In some embodiments, when the magnet module 600 is configured to generate its maximum magnetic force to attract the electronic device, all of magnets 602-612 of magnet module 600 are oriented so as to generate an attractive force between the magnet module 600 and the electronic device. In some embodiments, when the magnet module 600 is configured to generate its maximum magnetic force to attract the electronic device, one or more magnets 602- 612 of magnet module 600 are oriented so as to generate a repulsive force between the magnet module 600 and the electronic device.

[0070] In some embodiments, when the electronic device is docked to a dock having magnet module 600, each of magnets 602-612 aligns with a separate magnet fixed to the electronic device. In some embodiments, when the electronic device is docked to a dock having magnet module 600, a group of two or more of magnets 602-612 aligns with a single magnet fixed to the electronic device. In some embodiments, all of magnets 602-612 are aligned with a single magnet fixed to the electronic device.

[0071] The polarity of EPMs can be disabled in one or more stages to transition a tablet from being supported by a dock to being held by a user. In some embodiments, the controller is configured to generate both the first control signals and the second control signals in response to the sense signal. For example, as detailed in relation to FIG. 7, a predefined amount of time may elapse between the first control signals and the second control signals. In some embodiments, the controller is configured to generate the first control signals before generating the second control signals, such that the attractive force between the magnet modules 510 and the electronic device weakens or reverses to become a repulsive force before the attractive force between the magnet modules 512 and the electronic device weakens or reverses to become a repulsive force. In some embodiments, the controller is configured to generate the first control signals after generating the second control signals, such that the attractive force between the magnet modules 510 and the electronic device weakens or reverses to become a repulsive force after the attractive forcebetween the magnet modules 512 and the electronic device weakens or reverses to become a repulsive force.

[0072] In some embodiments, dock 304 includes one or more additional groups of magnet modules, and the controller is configured to generate one or more corresponding additional control signals in response to the sense signal. Each of the additional control signals may be generated before the first and second control signals, between the first and second control signals, or after the first and second control signals.

[0073] In some embodiments, after a predetermined amount of time after the sense signal, the controller generates magnet control signals which cause the magnet modules to generate magnetic fields corresponding with the electronic device being docked with the dock.

[0074] FIG. 7 illustrates timing diagrams 700 and 750, which show timing relationships of sense signals and magnet control signals, according to some implementations of the present disclosure.

[0075] At time 710 of timing diagram 700, an undocking event is initiated, for example, undocking may be initiated in response to a touch from a hand of a user in a particular location, a command being spoken, or a button being pushed. Alternatively, a sensor can output a signal indicating that the undocking event has been initiated (e.g., force being applied to the tablet in a particular direction).

[0076] At time 720 of timing diagram 700, first magnet control signals are generated in response to the sense signal to change a magnetic state (e.g., polarity) of a first set of one or more magnets. In some embodiments, the first magnet control signals are substantially immediately generated, for example after a latency intrinsic to the generation and processing of the sense signal. In some embodiments, the magnet control signals are generated after the one or more sense signal by a predetermined duration. For example, the magnet control signals may occur after the sense signal by a duration which is any of: greater than 0 ms and less than 20 ms, greater than 10 ms and less than 30 ms, greater than 20 ms and less than 40 ms, greater than 30 ms and less than 50 ms, greater than 40 ms and less than 60 ms, greater than 50 ms and less than 70 ms, greater than 60 ms and less than 80 ms, greater than 70 ms and less than 90 ms, greater than 80 ms and less than 100 ms, greater than 90 ms and less than 110 ms, greater than 100 ms and less than 150 ms, greater than 130 ms and less than 180 ms, greater than 150 ms and less than 200 ms, greater than 150 ms and less than 250 ms, greater than 200 ms and less than 300 ms, and greater than 250 ms and less than 350 ms.

[0077] In some embodiments, only the magnetic state of the first set of magnets is changed. The remainder of the magnets may be permanent magnets. With the polarity of the first set of magnets having been reversed, a user may now easily remove the tablet by pulling the tablet away from the dock or pivoting it, such as by using a top edge of the dock as a fulcrum. With the magnetic force of the first set of magnets reversed, a sufficient net attractive force may still be present to hold the tablet to the dock, but it may be removed with less force being applied.

[0078] In other embodiments, at time 730 of timing diagram 700, second magnet control signals are generated in response to the sense signal to change a magnetic state (e.g. polarity) of a second set of magnets. In some embodiments, the second magnet control signals are generated after the first magnet control signals by a predetermined duration. For example, the magnet control signals may occur after the sense signal by a duration which is any of: greater than 30 ms and less than 50 ms, greater than 40 ms and less than 60 ms, greater than 50 ms and less than 70 ms, greater than 60 ms and less than 80 ms, greater than 70 ms and less than 90 ms, greater than 80 ms and less than 100 ms, greater than 90 ms and less than 110 ms, greater than 100 ms and less than 150 ms, greater than 130 ms and less than 180 ms, greater than 150 ms and less than 200 ms, greater than 150 ms and less than 250 ms, greater than 200 ms and less than 300 ms, and greater than 250 ms and less than 350 ms.

[0079] At time 760 of timing diagram 750, undocking event is initiated, for example, undocking may be initiated in response to a touch from a hand of a user in a particular location, a command being spoken, or a button being pushed. Alternatively, a sensor can output a signal indicating that the undocking event has been initiated (e.g., force being applied to the tablet in a particular direction).

[0080] At time 770 of timing diagram 750, the first magnet control signals are generated in response to the first sense signal to change a magnetic state of the first magnets. In some embodiments, the first magnet control signals are substantially immediately generated, for example after a latency intrinsic to the generation and processing of the first sense signal. In some embodiments, the first magnet control signals are generated after the one or more first sense signal by a predetermined duration. For example, the first magnet control signals may occur after the first sense signal by a duration which is any of: greater than 0 ms and less than 20 ms, greater than 10 ms and less than 30 ms, greater than 20 ms and less than 40 ms, greater than 30 ms and less than 50 ms, greater than 40 ms and less than 60 ms, greater than 50 ms and less than 70 ms, greater than 60 ms and less than 80 ms, greater than 70 ms and less than 90 ms, greater than 80 ms and less than 100 ms, greater than 90 ms and less than 110 ms, greater than 100 ms and less than 150 ms,greater than 130 ms and less than 180 ms, greater than 150 ms and less than 200 ms, greater than 150 ms and less than 250 ms, greater than 200 ms and less than 300 ms, and greater than 250 ms and less than 350 ms.

[0081] At time 780 of timing diagram 750, the undocking event has progressed. A predefined amount of force as applied by a user’s hand may be detected based on a second sense signal. Detection of this change can result in the undocking process continuing. If a user does not apply sufficient force, in some embodiments, undocking may be canceled (e.g., the polarity of the first magnets is again reversed) or paused until sufficient force is detected.

[0082] At time 790 of timing diagram 750, second magnet control signals are generated in response to the second sense signal to change a magnetic state of second magnets. In some embodiments, the second magnet control signals are substantially immediately generated, for example after a latency intrinsic to the generation and processing of the second sense signal. In some embodiments, the second magnet control signals are generated after the one or more second sense signal by a predetermined duration. For example, the second magnet control signals may occur after the second sense signal by a duration which is any of: greater than 0 ms and less than 20 ms, greater than 10 ms and less than 30 ms, greater than 20 ms and less than 40 ms, greater than 30 ms and less than 50 ms, greater than 40 ms and less than 60 ms, greater than 50 ms and less than 70 ms, greater than 60 ms and less than 80 ms, greater than 70 ms and less than 90 ms, greater than 80 ms and less than 100 ms, greater than 90 ms and less than 110 ms, greater than 100 ms and less than 150 ms, greater than 130 ms and less than 180 ms, greater than 150 ms and less than 200 ms, greater than 150 ms and less than 250 ms, greater than 200 ms and less than 300 ms, and greater than 250 ms and less than 350 ms.

[0083] Various methods may be performed using the systems and arrangements of FIGS. 1-7. FIG. 8 illustrates an embodiment of a method 800 for removing an electronic device from a dock. Method 800 may be performed, for example, by tablet dock system 100, which may have any of the features discussed with reference to any or all of FIGS. 1-7 or discussed elsewhere herein. Method 800 can also be performed by another form of electronic device that can be docked and undocked from a dock or docking station. While the remainder of method 800 refers to a tablet, the blocks detailed herein are applicable to other forms of electronic devices.

[0084] At block 802, an undocking event trigger may be identified. The event trigger can include one or more sense signals indicative of an intent by a user to undock a tablet being generated and / or received. Block 802 can also include a processing system of the docking system receiving one or more signals indicative of an intent to undock. As previously detailed, a user’sintent to undock a tablet from a dock can be determined based on force being applied to the tablet, a user speaking a command, a user providing input to a touchscreen, a user pressing a physical button, or a similar form of input. For example, processing system 130 and / or controller 139 may receive such sense signals, such as from one or more strain gauges. Such signals may be received by the dock from a tablet computer or can be directly measured by the dock. The dock can compare one or more measurements to a stored threshold to determine if undocking is being performed by a user.

[0085] At block 804, one or more first control signals are generated in response to block 802. For example, a controller may generate the first control signals and transmit the first control signals to a first group of magnet modules of a plurality of groups of magnet modules on the dock. For example, controller 139 may generate the first control signals and transmit the first control signals to the first group of magnet modules 510 or a particular EPM within one or more magnet modules. In response to the first control signals, as part of block 804, the first group of magnet modules changes magnetic states, such as by flipping polarity, such that the attractive force between the first group of magnet modules and the electronic device weakens or reverses to become a repulsive force.

[0086] Following block 804, sufficient net attractive force may remain present to hold the tablet to the dock in place; however, it may now be easier for a user to pull the tablet away to overcome the attractive forces. In some embodiments, the particular EPMs that have their polarity reversed may be positioned lower on the face of the dock. By decreasing the attractive force lower on the face of the dock, the user may be encouraged to pivot the tablet using the upper edge (e.g., edge 505) as a fulcrum. In some embodiments, method 800 going to block 808 with a user supplying sufficient force to pull or pivot the tablet off of the dock. In other embodiments, method 800 continues to block 806.

[0087] Prior to performing block 806, a predefined amount of time may be allowed to pass. This amount of time can allow the user to strengthen his or her grip and prepare to support the full weight of the tablet. For instance the amount of time that is allowed to elapse may be greater than 0 ms and less than 20 ms, greater than 10 ms and less than 30 ms, greater than 20 ms and less than 40 ms, greater than 30 ms and less than 50 ms, greater than 40 ms and less than 60 ms, greater than 50 ms and less than 70 ms, greater than 60 ms and less than 80 ms, greater than 70 ms and less than 90 ms, greater than 80 ms and less than 100 ms, greater than 90 ms and less than 110 ms, greater than 100 ms and less than 150 ms, greater than 130 ms and less than 180 ms, greater than150 ms and less than 200 ms, greater than 150 ms and less than 250 ms, greater than 200 ms and less than 300 ms, and greater than 250 ms and less than 350 ms.

[0088] At block 806, one or more second control signals are generated. For example, the controller may generate the second control signals and transmit the second control signals to a second group of magnet modules of the plurality of groups of magnet modules on the dock. For example, controller 139 (which can be understood as part of a processing system of one or more processors) may generate the second control signals and transmit the second control signals to the second group of magnet modules 512. In response to the second control signals, the second group of magnet modules changes magnetic states (e.g., polarity) such that the attractive force between the second group of magnet modules and the electronic device weakens or reverses to become a repulsive force at part of block 806. Following block 806, the amount of net attractive force being applied to the tablet is less than the attractive force following block 804, thus making the tablet easier to pull or pivot away from the dock face. The attractive force exerted by the dock may be zero, less than zero (i.e., repulsive), or still sufficiently attractive to prevent the tablet from falling away from the dock if the user releases his or her grip. In some embodiments, following block 806, the tablet and / or dock can detect that separation is complete at block 808. For example, the amount of strain measured by a strain gauge on the face of the dock may be zero, indicating that the tablet has been fully removed.

[0089] In some embodiments, after a predefined amount of time after block 808, the controller generates magnet control signals which cause the magnet modules to generate magnetic fields corresponding with the electronic device being docked with the dock at block 810. That is, if polarity was flipped for an EPM during method 800, the polarity may be reversed again while the tablet is undocked to prepare the dock to receive the tablet during a next docking event. Accordingly, when the user reattaches the electronic device to the dock, the magnetic fields attract the electronic device so that the electronic device becomes fixed to the dock. The predefined amount of time may be between 0.3 seconds to 5 seconds.

[0090] In some embodiments, the second control signals of block 804 are generated in response to one or more additional sense signals, which are different from the sense signals in response to which the one or more first control signals are generated. For example, the additional sense signals may be for measurements that ensure the user is applying sufficient force to the tablet to support the tablet following block 806 being performed. Alternatively, the additional sense signals may be used to confirm that the user is at least touching the tablet. If the user is not applying sufficientforce or at least touching the tablet, the undocking process may be canceled (with block 804 being reversed) or paused until the user is applying sufficient pressure or at least touching the tablet.

[0091] In some embodiments, the second control signals are generated after the one or more additional sense signals by a predetermined duration. For example, the second control signals may occur after the additional sense signals by a duration which is any of: greater than 0 ms and less than 20 ms, greater than 10 ms and less than 30 ms, greater than 20 ms and less than 40 ms, greater than 30 ms and less than 50 ms, greater than 40 ms and less than 60 ms, greater than 50 ms and less than 70 ms, greater than 60 ms and less than 80 ms, greater than 70 ms and less than 90 ms, greater than 80 ms and less than 100 ms, greater than 90 ms and less than 110 ms, greater than 100 ms and less than 150 ms, greater than 130 ms and less than 180 ms, greater than 150 ms and less than 200 ms, greater than 150 ms and less than 250 ms, greater than 200 ms and less than 300 ms, and greater than 250 ms and less than 350 ms.

[0092] FIG. 9 illustrates an embodiment of a method 900 of controlling magnetic attraction while undocking an electronic device from a dock. Method 900 may be performed, for example, by tablet dock system 100, which may have any of the features discussed with reference to any or all of FIGS. 1-8, or discussed elsewhere herein.

[0093] At block 902, a force or pressure distribution is sensed by one or more sensors interfaced, directly or indirectly, with the tablet computer or the dock. The one or more sensors detect signals indicative of an initial position of the electronic device relative to the dock. For example, the signals may indicate that the electronic device is docked, is undocked, is about to be undocked, or is in the process of being undocked. The one or more sensors may be any type of sensor discussed herein. For example, the one or more sensors may include a strain gauge, an inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor, a barometer, etc., or any combination thereof. The sensors may be integrated into either or both of the dock and the electronic device such that the sensors interface, directly or indirectly, with either or both of the dock and the electronic device. In various aspects, the one or more sensors may be located on, located within, integrated into, etc., in either or both of the dock and the electronic device.

[0094] At block 904, a change in position of the tablet during an effort to undock the tablet computer from the dock may be determined. In some embodiments, the detected change may occur as a result of the tablet computer moving (e.g., sliding along a surface, pivoting) relative to the dock. For example, at block 902, the one or more sensors may detect signals indicating that the initial position of the tablet computer is docked. A processor in the tablet computer and dock system determines that the initial position is docked where the one or more sensors detect, forexample, a weight, a pressure, a force, etc., on the sensors associated with the tablet computer’s weight resting on the dock, in one aspect. A change in the initial position may be determined by a change in the force or pressure distribution detected by the one or more sensors at block 904, for example, when the tablet computer is lifted off of the dock and stops applying pressure to the dock. In some embodiments, block 904 includes a user pivoting the tablet against an edge of the dock. For example, a user may grip and rotate a top half of the tablet using edge 505 as a fulcrum. This pivoting motion can cause the bottom half of the tablet to separate from the dock faster than the top half due to the lever motion.

[0095] In at least some aspects, movement of the tablet computer relative to the dock is determined or recognized as a result of the change in force or pressure distribution exceeding a predefined threshold. For example, detecting the change in force or pressure distribution may comprise comparing a measured force with a stored predefined force value. A predefined threshold may be a hardcoded threshold determined and set by a manufacturer, a supplier, a user, etc. In other aspects, the predefined threshold is generated by a machine learning model. For example, docking and undocking sensor data may be collected from a plurality of users. Machine learning models known in the art may be used to determine whether a change in force or pressure distribution is indicative of a change in position and differentiate the change from changes which result from other interactions with the tablet computer or dock. In various aspects, the predefined threshold includes a time constraint. For example, if the force associated with the weight of the tablet computer on the dock is below a threshold for a given time (e.g., 50 to 100 ms), a change in position is determined by the system comprising the tablet computer and the dock.

[0096] At block 906, based on the determination at block 904, a state of one or more magnets located on at least one of the dock and the electronic device is changed. In particular, based on signals from the sensors, the status of the magnets may be modified (e.g., polarization of one or more EPMs reversed), as discussed elsewhere herein. In some embodiments, a multi-stage adjustment of the polarity of multiple groups of electropermanent magnets may be changed in response to a change in position of the tablet computer (e.g., a change in the force or pressure distribution detected by the one or more sensors).

[0097] In some aspects, at block 906, an updated position of the tablet computer is determined. In various aspects, a new stable level of a force or pressure distribution (e.g., low variance) may be indicative of a new position. In some embodiments, a machine learning model, for example, as discussed herein, is capable of filtering out noise and / or results indicative of taps or swipes (e.g., not undocking or docking). In other aspects, the processor of the system comprising the tabletcomputer and the dock is able to determine the new position when the signals detected by the one or more sensors become stable after a change.
